Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAXME - St. James's Gate Brewery is a brewery founded in 1759 in Dublin, Ireland, by Arthur Guinness. The company is now a part of Diageo, a company formed from the merger of Guinness and Grand Metropolitan in 1997. The main product of the brewery is Draught Guinness.
Originally leased in 1759 to Arthur Guinness at £45 per year for 9,000 years, the St. James's Gate area has been the home of Guinness ever since. It became the largest brewery in Ireland in 1838, and the largest in the world by 1886, with an annual output of 1.2 million barrels. Although no longer the largest brewery in the world, it remains as the largest brewer of stout. The company has since bought out the originally leased property, and during the 19th and early 20th centuries, the brewery owned most of the buildings in the surrounding area, including many streets of housing for brewery employees, and offices associated with the brewery. The brewery had its own power plant.
There is an attached exhibition on the 250-year-old history of Guinness, called the Guinness Storehouse.
The Storehouse covers seven floors surrounding a glass atrium shaped in the form of a pint of Guinness. The ground floor introduces the beer's four ingredients (water, barley, hops and yeast), and the brewery's founder, Arthur Guinness. Other floors feature the history of Guinness advertising and include an interactive exhibit on responsible drinking. The seventh floor houses the Gravity Bar with views of Dublin and where visitors may drink a pint of Guinness included in the price of most admission tickets
The Guinness Storehouse explains the history of beer. The story is told through various interactive exhibition areas including ingredients, brewing, transport, cooperage, advertising, and sponsorship.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6FR - The sculpture A Monument to Vimto located in Vimto Park on Granby Row, Manchester M1 7HR, England, UK. The artwork commemorates the creation of the Vimto soft drink, which was first developed on this site in 1908 by John Noel Nichols. A Monument to Vimto is a public sculpture located in Vimto Park on Granby Row, Manchester M1 7HR, within an area that now forms part of the University of Manchester campus. The monument marks the exact site where Vimto was first created in 1908 by Manchester entrepreneur John Noel Nichols, originally developed as a herbal health tonic.
While Vimto is a familiar British soft drink, it has achieved exceptional cultural significance during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, where it is widely regarded as a traditional iftar drink and is consumed when the daily fast is broken at sunset. In many Middle Eastern countries and Muslim communities worldwide, Vimto is so closely associated with Ramadan that it is often colloquially described as the unofficial drink of Ramadan, reflecting custom rather than formal designation.
The sculpture itself takes the form of an oversized Vimto bottle surrounded by stylised fruit elements, referencing both the drink's flavour profile and its historic branding, including the slogan Vimto The Ideal Beverage. Vimto Park was created as part of city-centre regeneration and named to acknowledge the drink's Manchester origins and its journey from local invention to global cultural icon.
Photographed in daylight, the image documents a distinctive Manchester landmark that connects industrial heritage, global consumer culture and multicultural traditions, illustrating how a product invented in Edwardian Manchester became embedded in religious and social practices far beyond the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RMMPBY - Following the UK's Spring Budget announcement on 15th March 2023, the drinks and hospitality industry are preparing for the upcoming changes to alcohol duty which will take effect on 1st August 2023. Draught products will receive additional relief, while duty on other alcohol products is set to rise in line with inflation.
According to WSTA, the forecast inflation rate of 10.1% is being used as the measure for increasing duty rates on all non-draught products, but will be adjusted according to alcohol content. In simple terms, the higher the alcohol per volume (ABV), the higher the new duty rate will be.
Duty changes in line with ABV
While some products have previously been measured on volume only such as still wine and cider from 1st August all alcohol products will be measured by alcohol volume or ABV.
What does this mean for beer?
Draught beer and cider products are protected by a 9.2% discount offered on items in 20ltr containers that are less than 8.5% and use a dispense system, meaning that, for example, the duty on a 50ltr 4% lager will not change.
However, the standard rate of duty on packaged beer that is 3.5% ABV and above will rise by 10.1%. This will increase the price of a 24 pack of 330ml 4.5% lager by £0.69p per case.
What does this mean for wine?
Most wine will see an increase of £0.44 per 75cl bottle, or a 20% increase in the duty paid (£2.67 vs the current £2.23). This increase will apply to wines with an ABV between 11.5% and 14.5%.
Wines with an ABV above 15% will see a duty increase of £0.97 (+44%) per 75cl bottle, and this increase gets bigger the higher the alcohol percentage duty on fortified wines of +20% ABV will go up by £1.30 to £4.28 per 75cl bottle.
On the other hand, wine under 11.5% ABV will be treated more favourably. Duty on wine at 10% ABV, for example, will be £0.09 less than the current rate (at £2.14 per 75cl bottle).
Further abolishment of separate duty rates for sparkling and still wine

The resulting Pale Ale was a long way off what Geoff had in mind, but nevertheless, was consumed with relish after a tantalising wait for fermentation and bottle-conditioning to run their course. Over the following months, recipes were tweaked, altered, thrown away and revived as they searched out information online and in countless books and picked the brains of generous and far more experienced brewers.
Within 12 months, with positive feedback and enthusiasm, the decision to take brewing to the next level and go commercial' was made and for a while Buxton cuckoo-brewed' at another local microbrewery. In January 2010, with Geoff going for it' full-time, brewing on a second-hand 800 litre plant began in earnest.
Fast-forward 9 years and the team, which has steadily grown to be 11 strong is now based in a 7000 square foot modern building on Staden Lane, Buxton. Its custom designed and (British) built brewhouse produces around 3500 litres per brew, 3 times per week.
The brewery makes upwards of 30 distinct brews of all kinds and has many other special editions both planned and in its back-catalogue. Innovation and super-high quality are the prime goals, along with a nod to tradition and an almost maniacal attention to detail.
All of the beers the brewery produces are designed to delight the senses and enthral the drinker. Not all beers are created equal, some are big and strong and full of powerful hops and malts, others are lighter, and have subtle nuances of flavour and aroma. All are intended to be enjoyed as a lovingly hand made product, nurtured by a small team of dedicated beer lovers.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP34D - A closed and shuttered shopfront of the former Waterside Off Licence in Coleraine, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The traditional painted sign reading Waterside Off Licence remains clearly visible above the frontage, while the wooden shutters and door below are firmly shut, indicating the premises is no longer trading.
The building features a weathered red-painted exterior typical of small independent retail units found in towns across Northern Ireland and the wider United Kingdom. Signs of age, wear, and exposure to the elements are visible across the frontage, reinforcing the sense of a long-established local business that has ceased operation.
Photographed in natural daylight, the image provides a documentary record of changing high street and neighbourhood retail landscapes, reflecting wider economic pressures on small independent shops. It captures a familiar streetscene in Coleraine, illustrating themes of retail decline, local commerce, and the transformation of everyday urban environments in Northern Irish towns.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64RFH - This image shows a promotional banner advertising Lancaster's seasonal summer markets, strung across a city centre street and framed by rows of colourful triangular bunting. The banner announces a summer market date and opening times, celebrating local traders, seasonal produce, and community activity in the heart of the city.
Seasonal markets play an important role in Lancaster's civic and economic life, supporting independent businesses, encouraging footfall, and creating a festival atmosphere within the historic urban environment. The bunting and signage transform the street into a shared public space, signalling celebration, sociability, and local pride.
Historic stone buildings provide a strong architectural backdrop, reinforcing Lancaster's identity as a traditional English city with a well-preserved townscape. The clear blue sky and bright colours emphasise the summery character of the event and the positive, welcoming tone of the promotion.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited for editorial use covering UK market culture, town-centre regeneration, community events, local economies, and the visual language of civic celebration in English towns and cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMRX - This image shows the exterior of the Barrel Store operated by Wild Card Brewery, located on the Ravenswood Industrial Estate in Walthamstow, East London. Bold painted lettering on the rendered wall advertises the Barrel Store and highlights the brewery's focus on the retail and manufacture of barrel-aged beer, a specialist area within the UK craft brewing scene.
Wild Card Brewery is part of a wider cluster of independent creative and food-and-drink businesses that have taken root in former light-industrial premises across Walthamstow. Facilities such as the Barrel Store are used for ageing beer in oak barrels, allowing flavours to develop over extended periods and linking modern craft brewing with traditional production techniques.
The scene is photographed in daylight under a partly cloudy sky, with picnic-style outdoor seating visible in front of the building, suggesting use as both a working production space and a customer-facing retail or tasting area. The utilitarian industrial setting contrasts with the growing cultural and social role of craft breweries as community hubs.
This image is well suited to editorial use covering London's craft beer movement, independent breweries, small-scale manufacturing, urban regeneration, food and drink culture, and the reuse of industrial estates by creative businesses in East London.

Sandstone carving of a 'Cheshire Cat', St Wilfrid's Church, Grappenhall
St Wilfrid's Church has a carving of a cat on the west face of the tower. This may have been Lewis Carroll's inspiration for the grinning Cheshire Cat in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The church itself was first constructed in 1120, though was rebuilt 400 years later. The church was also, at a time, in the possession of the Boidelle (Boydell) family.
Along with the church, the centre of the village contains two pubs, the Parr Arms and the Ram's Head, and Grappenhall Hall Residential School (closed down) and St Wilfrid's Primary School. Bradshaw Community Primary School is located north of the village centre.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NWK02Y - Fritz-kola (stylized as fritz-kola) is a soft drink made in north Germany and shipped to many nations in the European Union. It has a relatively high caffeine content and is sold in glass bottles with labels which were originally black and white, using the faces of the two founders in the logo.
History
Two students from Hamburg, Lorenz Hampl and Mirco Wiegert, started selling Fritz-kola in 2003. They had a brewery help them develop a cola recipe, choosing to use less sugar and more caffeine (25mg of caffeine per 100ml) than Coke or Pepsi, and adding lemon flavour.[2] They polled people outside a shopping centre to choose the company name. To save money, they used black and white labels and a photoshopped version of pictures of their heads as a logo
they sold the first crates to bars on a returnable basis, and did not establish an office for three years.
Hampl left the business in 2016. As of August 2020, Wiegert heads the company and owns two-thirds of it. The company employs 280 people. Five bottling plants produce the cola, which is sold in a number of European countries
in 2019 its 330ml bottles outsold all brands except Coke, and its other major markets are the Netherlands, Poland, Belgium, and Austria. Sales in 2015 were €7.4 million

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M69C9G - Simple tips for cutting down
Make a plan
Before you start drinking, set a limit on how much you're going to drink.
Set a budget
Only take a fixed amount of money to spend on alcohol.
Let them know
If you let your friends and family know you're cutting down and it's important to you, you could get support from them.
Take it a day at a time
Cut back a little each day. That way, every day you do is a success.
Make it a smaller one
You can still enjoy a drink, but go for smaller sizes. Try bottled beer instead of pints, or a small glass of wine instead of a large one.
Have a lower-strength drink
Cut down the alcohol by swapping strong beers or wines for ones with a lower strength (ABV in %). You'll find this information on the bottle.
Stay hydrated
Have a glass of water before you have alcohol and alternate alcoholic drinks with water or other non-alcoholic drinks.
Take a break
Have several drink-free days each week.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M69C9X - Liquor (or a spirit) is an alcoholic drink produced by distillation of grains, fruits, vegetables, or sugar, that have already gone through alcoholic fermentation. Other terms for liquor include: spirit drink, distilled beverage, spirituous liquor or hard liquor. The distillation process concentrates the liquid to increase its alcohol by volume. As liquors contain significantly more alcohol (ethanol) than other alcoholic drinks, they are considered 'harder'
in North America, the term hard liquor is sometimes used to distinguish distilled alcoholic drinks from non-distilled ones, whereas the term spirits is more common in the UK. Some examples of liquors include vodka, rum, gin, and tequila. Liquors are often aged in barrels, such as for the production of brandy and whiskey, or are infused with flavorings to form a flavored liquor such as absinthe.
While the word liquor ordinarily refers to distilled alcoholic spirits rather than beverages produced by fermentation alone, it can sometimes be used more broadly to refer to any alcoholic beverage (or even non-alcoholic products of distillation or various other liquids).
Like other alcoholic drinks, liquor is typically consumed for the psychoactive effects of alcohol. Liquor may be consumed on its own ('neat'), typically in amounts of around 50 millilitres (1.7 US fluid ounces) per served drink. In an undiluted form, distilled beverages are often slightly sweet, and bitter, and typically impart a burning mouthfeel, with an odor derived from the alcohol and the production and aging processes
the exact flavor varies between different varieties of liquor and the different impurities they impart. Liquor is also frequently mixed with other ingredients to form a cocktail.
Rapid consumption of a large amount of liquor can cause severe alcohol intoxication or alcohol poisoning, which can be fatal. Consistent consumption of liquor over time correlates with higher mortality and other harmful health effects

Construction of the northbound services began in early 2013, and they officially opened on 7 May 2014. Construction of the southbound services commenced in March 2014 and they opened on 19 May 2015
In September 2009, the independent motorway services operator Westmorland Motorway Services Ltd, jointly with a local charitable trust, Gloucestershire Gateway Trust, submitted plans for a service area at Matson for public consultation. The plans were for a business operated in a similar manner to Tebay Services on the M6 in Cumbria, with much of the food and produce on sale being sourced from local suppliers
The operator promised not to host chain coffee shops, fast-food outlets, or video and gambling machines
The service area supports the Gloucestershire Gateway Trust in assisting the business to provide good jobs for more deprived areas of Gloucester, and to support local social regeneration schemes.
The 2019 Motorway Services User Survey found that Gloucester's southbound side was in the top five motorway services in the UK for customer satisfaction
The District Council was informed at the end of February 2011 that Roadchef and Welcome Break (the operators of Strensham and Michaelwood service stations) had applied to the High Court for a judicial review of the Council's decision to grant planning permission. Joined in the action were CAMSA and the Parish Councils of Brookthorpe-with-Whaddon and Harescombe. The case was heard in the High Court in Birmingham on 17 and 18 January 2012. By 8 February 2012, the High Court had dismissed all challenges to the planning application
One of the factors that helped the development gain planning permission was the inclusion of a green roof

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD2421 - This image shows a burlap coffee sack marked Product of Colombia 70kg, photographed under warm ambient lighting that highlights the woven texture of the hessian material and the stencilled lettering. Such sacks are traditionally used to transport and store green coffee beans prior to roasting, forming a familiar visual symbol of the global coffee trade.
Colombia is one of the world's most recognisable coffee-producing countries, particularly associated with high-quality arabica beans grown in mountainous regions. The sack's utilitarian design reflects the agricultural and export origins of coffee before it reaches cafés, roasteries, and consumers.
The warm lighting and close framing suggest an interior setting such as a café, coffee roastery, or specialty coffee shop, where sacks like this are often reused as décor to emphasise authenticity, provenance, and ethical sourcing. The image works well to illustrate themes of fair-trade coffee, sustainable consumption, global supply chains, and artisan coffee culture.
The photograph provides a tactile, atmospheric view of coffee as an agricultural commodity, connecting everyday café experiences with their international origins.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD2424 - This image shows a freshly prepared cappuccino served in a ceramic cup and saucer, accompanied by a teaspoon and placed on a wooden table. The coffee is topped with a layer of foamed milk lightly dusted with cocoa or chocolate powder, giving it a warm and inviting appearance.
The neutral-toned crockery and natural wood surface suggest a relaxed community café environment, typical of independent or socially focused cafés that emphasise ethical sourcing and fair-trade coffee. The close-up composition highlights the texture of the foam and the warmth of the drink, creating a comforting, everyday café scene.
Cappuccino is a popular espresso-based drink enjoyed throughout the UK, commonly associated with informal socialising, coffee breaks, and community spaces. Images like this are often used to illustrate themes of local café culture, ethical consumption, and simple pleasures in daily life.
The photograph works well for editorial, lifestyle, food, and hospitality contexts, offering a timeless representation of coffee culture without identifiable branding.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1Y84T - A Royal Warrant of Appointment is granted as a mark of recognition to people or companies who have regularly supplied goods or services to HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh or HRH The Prince of Wales or their Households
The Monarch decides who may grant Royal Warrants. These are known as the Grantors. Today HM The Queen and HRH The Prince of Wales grant Royal Warrants. Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh were also grantors of Warrants.
There are currently over 800 Royal Warrant holders. They represent a huge cross-section of trade and industry, from individual craftspeople to global multi-nationals, ranging from dry cleaners to fishmongers, and from agricultural machinery to computer software. There is no requirement for the company concerned to be British owned or UK-based. Warrant-holding firms do not provide their goods or services for free to the Royal Households, and all transactions are conducted on a strictly commercial basis.
A Royal Warrant is initially granted for up to five years to a named individual at a company, known as the Grantee. An official Royal Warrant Display Document is sent to the Grantee which provides evidence of the authority to use the Royal Arms.
The grant of a Royal Warrant gives a Warrant Holder nothing more than a right to display the Royal Arms and they are not entitled to claim or imply any exclusivity of supply. When a company displays the Royal Arms in relation to their business, the Coat of Arms must always be accompanied by the Legend. This Legend provides the details of which Member of the Royal Family has granted the Royal Warrant, the company name, the nature of the goods or services provided to them and the head office address of the company.
The Lord Chamberlain's Rules govern how the Royal Warrant may be displayed on a company's products, stationery, advertisements and other printed material, in their premises and on delivery vehicles.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPDJC2 - Bulmers cider is one of a number of brands owned by British cider maker H. P. Bulmer of Hereford. It is one of the biggest selling British bottled cider brands in the UK because it has the highest concentration of apples, with a number of variants including Bulmers Original & Pear. It should not be confused with Bulmers Irish Cider, sold outside the Republic of Ireland as Magners.
History
Fred and Percy Bulmer grew the apples at their family orchard at Credenhill in Herefordshire which would be later used to make the cider for which they became known. Production was initially at Ryelands Street in Hereford, the original buildings, including cider cellars survives today as the Cider Museum and King Offa Distillery. Production moved to the current Plough Lane site in the late 1970s. Today HP Bulmer makes 65% of the UK's five hundred million litres of cider sold annually, and the bulk of the UK's cider exports. From 1937 to 1949, Bulmers operated with Wm. Magners of Clonmel, expanding into Irish distribution markets. From 1949 Magners withdrew from this partnership but retained rights to trade under the name HP Bulmer Ltd in Ireland.
In 2003, the Hereford-based firm was bought for £278 million by Scottish & Newcastle (S&N) with the loss of some 200 jobs initially. In 2008, S&N were bought for £7.8 billion by the Carlsberg and Heineken groups. Bulmers now only survives as a brand name and subsidiary of the Dutch Heineken group, with operations in Hereford scaled back to focus mainly on the production of cider.
During spring 2006, the company relaunched Bulmers Original in the UK, aimed at the served over ice market, which had grown in popularity over the past few years. Bulmers Original is a 4.5% ABV cider, primarily sold in pint bottles (568 ml). In November 2007, Bulmers pear cider was launched

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K148X3 - Avanti West Coast is a train operating company in the United Kingdom owned by FirstGroup (70%) and Trenitalia (30%) that operates the West Coast Partnership.
During November 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced the InterCity West Coast franchise would be replaced by the West Coast Partnership (WCP). In August 2019, the DfT awarded the WCP franchise to the First Trenitalia consortium. On 8 December 2019, Avanti West Coast took over operations from the prior operating company Virgin Trains, which had run the franchise since 1997. Originally, the franchise was initially scheduled to run until March 2030, and had also been set to operate the initial High Speed 2 services from 2026. However, during December 2020, it was announced that First Trenitalia and the DfT had agreed to terminate the WCP franchise at the earlier date of 31 March 2026 as part of the abolition of the franchise system. Since then a number of contract changes have taken place due to COVID-19 and then poor performance by the company. As of March 2023, the company's contract will expire in October 2023.
Between 14 August and 18 September 2022, Avanti West Coast reduced its timetable, citing unofficial strike action from its employees. However, this allegation was disputed by Aslef, which accused the company of lying and blamed their lack of recruitment, especially of train drivers, for the problems. Trains were running at one service per hour on the majority of routes, as opposed to the three which would typically occur on the London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly route. Following these changes, Avanti West Coast was subject to public criticism
news stories emerged of numerous train cancellations, overcrowded services, delays, and expensive fares. Many commuters faced difficulties reaching their destinations on the reduced services and some travellers have been left to wait for to two days before travel for tickets to be released for sale

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFFP2R - J Sainsbury plc trading as Sainsbury's is the second largest chain of supermarkets in the United Kingdom, with a 16.0% share of the supermarket sector. Founded in 1869, by John James Sainsbury with a shop in Drury Lane, London, the company became the largest retailer of groceries in 1922. In 1995, Tesco overtook Sainsbury's to become the market leader, and Asda became the second largest in 2003, demoting Sainsbury's to third place for most of the subsequent period until January 2014, when Sainsbury's regained second place. In April 2019, whilst awaiting to merge with Asda, Sainsbury's was again demoted into third place as their rival placed second
The holding company, J Sainsbury plc, is split into three divisions: Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd (including convenience shops), Sainsbury's Bank and Sainsbury's Argos. The group's head office is in Sainsbury's Support Centre in Holborn Circus, City of London.
As of February 2018, the largest overall shareholder is the sovereign wealth fund of Qatar, the Qatar Investment Authority, which holds 21.99% of the company. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.
In April 2018, Sainsbury's and Asda were in talks of merging. On 25 April 2019, the Competition and Markets Authority announced it would not allow the merger due to an increase in price for consumers

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A4PJNY - Wanting to increase their presence and market share, Greggs opened their first Moto-operated franchised bakery at Lymm truckstop in early 2012, with high hopes. Following good sales a second store was opened at Birch eastbound the following June, and it was then confirmed that most Moto services would get one. Moto have also been opening franchises at some Extra services.
What makes Greggs a little bit different to other new brands is that most units have been modified so customers can visit without entering the main amenity building. This helped Moto's tax accounts: by not offering the option of eat-in food, the food was exempt from VAT, although the notorious pasty tax complicated things. As with most service station franchises, prices are inflated and the menu is altered slightly.
Greggs had never agreed to franchised stores before the Moto deal, but following its success they opened franchises with Euro Garages and Applegreen too (in the UK only). Greggs was now being added to petrol stations across the country, and Euro Garages started introducing the country's first Greggs drive thrus.
On the baked goods front, Moto had been using Upper Crust as a bakery brand, although this sold fewer hot goods and began to lose ground to Moto's other stores. In 2011 they also introduced West Cornwall Pasty Co., mostly in stands outside the services. Other operators have responded to Greggs with the likes of The Cornish Bakery, Pret a Manger and The Pasty Shop.
In line with Greggs's rules, service stations in the West Country are not allowed to sell Cornish pasties, for fear of upsetting the locals.

John Fuller's Griffin Brewery dates from 1816
in 1845, his son, John Bird Fuller, was joined by Henry Smith and John Turner.
Fuller's owns and operates over 380 pubs, inns and hotels across the south of England. London Pride beer is the flagship beer of Fuller's Brewery. It is sold both cask-conditioned and bottled.
London Pride has been brewed at the Griffin Brewery since 1958. It takes its name from a common name for the Saxifraga × urbium flower, in use by the nineteenth century. The flower provided shoots of recovery on the bombed sites left by the London Blitz of the early 1940s, and as such held symbolism for Londoners, celebrated in a patriotic song written in 1941 by Noël Coward
In 2019, Asahi Breweries bought Fuller's Brewery from Fuller, Smith & Turner plc, the sale being subject to a Fuller's shareholders' vote at a forthcoming EGM

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFFFA3 - Robert Burns (25 January 1759 21 July 1796), also known familiarly as Rabbie Burns, the National Bard, Bard of Ayrshire and the Ploughman Poet and various other names and epithets, was a Scottish poet and lyricist. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. He is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although much of his writing is also in English and a light Scots dialect, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland. He also wrote in standard English, and in these writings his political or civil commentary is often at its bluntest.
Haggis is a savoury pudding containing sheep's pluck (heart, liver, and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and cooked while traditionally encased in the animal's stomach[1] though now often in an artificial casing instead. According to the 2001 English edition of the Larousse Gastronomique: Although its description is not immediately appealing, haggis has an excellent nutty texture and delicious savoury flavour

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RG9AER - Prosecco is an Italian white wine. Prosecco controlled designation of origin can be spumante (sparkling wine), frizzante (semi-sparkling wine), or tranquillo (still wine). It is made from Glera grapes, formerly known also as Prosecco, but other grape varieties may be included. The following varieties are traditionally used with Glera up to a maximum of 15 per cent of the total: Verdiso, Bianchetta Trevigiana, Perera, Glera lunga, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Noir. The name Prosecco is derived from the Italian village of Prosecco near Trieste, where the grape and wine originated.
Prosecco DOC is produced in nine provinces spanning the Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia regions. Prosecco Superiore DOCG comes in two varieties: Prosecco Conegliano Valdobbiadene Superiore DOCG, which can only be made in the Treviso province of Veneto on the hills between the towns of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene (north of Treviso), and the smaller Asolo Prosecco Superiore DOCG, produced near the town of Asolo.
Prosecco is the main ingredient of the Bellini cocktail and can be a less expensive substitute of Champagne. It is also a key ingredient of venetian spritz, a popular cocktail in northern Italy.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XNA1 - The Thatchers company was founded by William Thatcher in 1904. His son Stanley Thatcher, born in 1910, began selling draught cider to pubs in Somerset and the company's presence in the area grew. The company is still family owned and employs around 200 people. In 1992 Martin took over from his father, John Thatcher, as managing director.
It has 500 acres of its own orchard, as well as using apples from other growers in the area. Alongside its bush orchards, Thatchers has pioneered a method of growing its apple trees in a hedgerow style. Trained on wires, this enables easier harvesting and also helps to ensure the fruit has the optimum combination of sunlight and rain. It has also led to the development of a new bespoke harvester. At the height of season, Thatchers can press 500 tonnes of apples per day. Thatchers also maintains an exhibition orchard in which over 458 different varieties of apple tree are grown. Many of the traditional ciders produced at Myrtle Farm are matured in 100-year-old oak vats, which gives the cider a distinctive taste.
In addition to its cider production, Myrtle Farm is the UK's biggest processor of blackcurrants, dealing with 90 per cent of the UK's total crop, which it processes on behalf of Ribena.
Thatchers Cider is available in many sports clubs and events across the South West. They are involved with teams including Winscombe R.F.C., Bath Rugby, Somerset County Cricket Club, Bristol Rugby, Bristol City, Yeovil Town, Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, Bristol Rovers, Plymouth Argyle F.C, Exeter City and Torquay United.
Thatchers are also involved in many local events and festivals including: Glastonbury Festival, Royal Bath and West Show, Bristol International Balloon Fiesta and Cambridge Folk Festival.
Thatcher's lost their ongoing cider sponsorship of the Glastonbury festival in 2019 to Mallets cider

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RG98A8 - Band on the Wall is a live music venue in the Northern Quarter of Manchester, England.
The building dates back to around 1862 when a local brewery, the McKenna Brothers, built it as the flagship pub of their operation. It was called the George and Dragon
the first licence on the site was granted to Elizabeth March in 1803. No-one knows when music started to be played at the venue but market pubs were well known for their musical connections, and the nearby Smithfield Markets and textile factories ensured that this was a bustling area with many musicians and buskers. Manchester was then at its height as the first industrial city at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution.
The 'Band on the Wall' was a nickname from the 1930s when the landlord of the time Ernie Tyson placed a stage high on the far wall of the pub on which the musicians played. A regular band of two accordions, piano, drums, a singer and occasionally a saxophone would play.
In 1975 local jazz musician Steve Morris and his business partner Frank Cusick bought the George & Dragon with the idea of turning it into a jazz club
a conversation with Johnny Roadhouse convinced them to name it the Band on the Wall. Jazz musicians from the local area as well as international artist played at the club. The late 1970s saw the emergence of a new sound, punk, and it was at the Band on the Wall that many of the Manchester punk bands played
Band on the Wall is operated by Inner City Music Ltd, a registered charity. The organisation was awarded £3.2 million in July 2007, in combined awards by Arts Council England and the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of a £4 million project to transform the venue into a 21st-century centre for music.
The Band on the Wall was refurbished before reopening on 25 September 2009 with a performance by the venue's patrons Julian Joseph and Mica Paris
On 18 June 2018, Inner City Music Ltd announced that Arts Council England had approved £1.65 million stage two Capital funding

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RMJ3BE - A cocktail is an alcoholic mixed drink, which is either a combination of spirits, or one or more spirits mixed with other ingredients such as fruit juice, lemonade, flavored syrup, or cream. There are various types of cocktails, based on the number and kind of ingredients added. The origins of the cocktail are debated.
The Oxford Dictionaries define cocktail as An alcoholic drink consisting of a spirit or spirits mixed with other ingredients, such as fruit juice or cream. A cocktail can contain alcohol, a sugar, and a bitter/citrus. When a mixed drink contains only a distilled spirit and a mixer, such as soda or fruit juice, it is a highball. Many of the International Bartenders Association Official Cocktails are highballs. When a mixed drink contains only a distilled spirit and a liqueur, it is a duo, and when it adds a mixer, it is a trio. Additional ingredients may be sugar, honey, milk, cream, and various herbs.
Mixed drinks without alcohol that resemble cocktails are known as mocktails or virgin cocktails.
Traditionally cocktails were a mixture of spirits, sugar, water, and bitters. The term highball appears during the 1890s to distinguish a drink composed only of a distilled spirit and a mixer. During Prohibition in the United States (19191933), when alcoholic beverages were illegal, cocktails were still consumed illegally in establishments known as speakeasies.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PEHFP3 - Tanqueray is a brand of gin produced by Diageo plc and marketed worldwide. Although originated in London, it is now produced in Scotland. It does not command a sizeable market share in its native market, but its largest market is in the United States, where it is the highest selling gin import, followed by southern Europe.[1]
Tanqueray is a London dry gin
it is so called because of its distillation process, as well as originating in Bloomsbury, London. London dry gin is made by means of double distillation of grain. Botanicals are added during the second distillation. While the recipe is a closely guarded trade secret, it is known to contain four botanicals: juniper, coriander, angelica root, and liquorice.
It is one of Diageo's 16 strategic brands earmarked for prioritisation in promotion and distribution worldwide.

The revival of the Altrincham Market is nothing short of remarkable. From 1290 (yes, 1290!) the market had been at the centre of community life in Altrincham. Throughout the centuries, the market would have been where townsfolk gathered to buy goods, make a living, and spend time in the company of their neighbours.
And yet, the second half of the 20th century brought a period of stagnation. With the fortunes of the town on the downturn and the population size decreasing year over year, the historic market was being run by the council with little love or care. In fact, around a decade ago, Altrincham was voted as having the worse high street in Britain.
So, what has changed?
Well, Nick Johnson came onto the scene. Nick was a property developer and saw something in Altrincham that others failed to spot. In 2013, he won the contract to run the market and quickly set about changing the face of it and in turn Altrincham.
Nick gave the Victorian building a makeover. Cleaning it from top to bottom and restoring some features that had been neglected. He then got to work contacting some of the area's best, local food vendors.
Nick did the same in Manchester city centre with the Mackie Mayor food hall, the big sister of Altrincham Market House. We previously wrote about Mackie Mayor here.

Food And Drink At Altrincham Market House
Since it reopened in 2014, locals and visitors have filled the food hall week after week, and it should come as no surprise the food on offer is second to none!
Market House is home to 10 indie food stalls, including Honest Crust, Wolfhouse Kitchen, Tender Cow, Jack in the Box, Reserve Wines, Great North Pie Co., Sam Joseph, and Market House Coffee.
Jack in the Box is an award-winning producer of real ale and cider that operate across the Mackie Mayor and Altrincham

Mike Mercer has run the Albion Inn for over 37 years and has created and captured the essence of the Great War 1914-18 in this last remaining classic Victorian corner street pub within the City Walls of Chester.
Albion Street, and the adjoining Volunteer Street both lead to the former Drill Hall, which was a recruiting centre during the First World War.
Many a young lad would have spent his King's Shilling in the bar of the Albion before going to face the horrors of the Western Front.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DJ7B91 - Waiting staff (British English), waitstaff (North American English), waiters (male) / waitresses (female), or servers (North American English), or colloquially food runner, are those who work at a restaurant, a diner, or a bar and sometimes in private homes, attending to customers by supplying them with food and drink as requested. Waiting staff follow rules and guidelines determined by the manager. Waiting staff carry out many different tasks, such as taking orders, food-running, polishing dishes and silverware, helping bus tables and restocking working stations with needed supplies.
Waiting on tables is part of the service sector and among the most common occupations in the United States. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that, as of May 2008, there were over 2.2 million people employed as servers in the U.S.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DE54XK - The Working Men's Club and Institute Union (CIU or C&IU) is a voluntary association of private members' clubs in Great Britain & Northern Ireland, with about 1,800 associate clubs. One club in the Republic of Ireland, the City of Dublin Working Men's Club is also affiliated. Most social clubs are affiliated to the CIU.
They do not have to be working men's clubs, although most are. There are many village clubs, Royal British Legions, Labour Clubs, Liberal Clubs, and various other clubs involved. A member of one CIU-affiliated club is entitled to use the facilities of all other CIU clubs, although they will only be entitled to vote in committee elections in clubs where they are full members.
The CIU has two main purposes: to provide a voice at national level for working men's clubs and social clubs, and to provide discounted products and services for its members.
Until 2004, the CIU had its own beer brewed by the Federation brewery in Dunston, Tyne and Wear. Although CIU-affiliated clubs do still receive discounted beer, these discounts are largely passed on to the members, and Federation beer will generally be cheaper than beer available in local pubs. The brewery was taken over by Scottish & Newcastle in 2004 and now brews Newcastle Brown Ale.
Together with other club organisations such as the Royal British Legion, the Association of Conservative Clubs, the National Union of Liberal Clubs and the National Union of Labour and Socialist Clubs, the CIU is part of CORCA (Confederation of Registered Club Associations) which lobbies Parliament on behalf of clubs. This group was active in the debate about smoking: as most clubs are known for working men who like to drink and smoke (in many cases without any women in the bar), there is some concern about the future prospects of clubs.
The CIU holds a national congress every year and as part of its activities runs convalescent homes. In many ways, it could be said to be the oldest surviving friendly society

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HD49 - Minimum alcohol pricing in Scotland.
Five European wine-producing nations are trying to block Scotland's plans for minimum alcohol pricing.
France, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Bulgaria have said the policy is illegal, unfair and ineffective and could have a devastating impact on the wine and spirits industry.
They argue that it breaches European free trade law by discriminating against imported alcohol products.
The Scottish government insisted minimum pricing was perfectly legal.
The European Commission (EC) is currently considering the Scottish government's request to be granted an exemption from trade regulations to enact the minimum price law which was approved by the Scottish Parliament last year.

Its well worth a walk for a great range of real ales and whiskies. I have spent a good few hours in there with my good friend Stephen Buchan. A chap who appreciates a real ale or two.
Originally a Georgian coach house, in the early Victorian era the building was remodelled into John Kay and Sons, Wines and spirits Merchants. Sympathetically modified in the 1970's the bar hosts a plethora of original Victorian features. its a bit like going back in time, reminds me a little of Mulligans in Dublin. Shame no one has written a novel covering a single drunken day around Edinburgh yet. If so, this pub should surely be in it.
Usually available are Budvar, Leffe, Budvar Dark, Innis &
Gunn, Furstenberg Frei, Corona, Magners, Becks, crabbies, Draught Guinness, Strongbow, fizzy Fosters &
Kronenburg.
I have never eaten there, but they do mince/haggis neeps and tatties \u00a34.10, Scotch pie beans and chips for under \u00a34. More up market herring salad just over a fiver.

'Nightswimming' is a song by the American alternative rock band R.E.M. It was released in 1993 as the fifth single off the group's eighth album Automatic for the People.
'Nightswimming' is a ballad featuring singer Michael Stipe accompanied only by bassist Mike Mills on piano, a string arrangement by former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, and a prominent oboe by Deborah Workman in the latter part of the piece. Stipe sings about a group of friends who go skinny dipping at night, which draws from similar experiences in the band's early days.
The Cafe Royal is a bit of an institution in Edinburgh. as atmospheric as a bar and a place to eat at night as it is in the daytime.

The public house serves food everyday from 12 - 3 pm and in the evenings from 6.30 - 9 pm (except Friday / Sunday nights). A snack menu is available till 5 pm. The food that is served is seafood and SMØRREBRØD sandwiches. Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5695317409 - 'One of Northern Ireland's best-known pubs, it is a rare and classic example of a Victorian gin palace. Its one of my favourites, similar to the Phil' in Liverpool and one more reason to consider staying at the famous Europa hotel over the road.
It was opened as The Railway Tavern, as the Great Victoria St train station is just opposite. The pub was then bought by Michael Flanagan. His son Patrick renamed and renovated the pub in 1885.
The Crown owes its elaborate tiling, stained glass and woodwork to the Italian craftsmen whom Flanagan persuaded to work on the pub after hours. These craftsmen were brought to Ireland to work on the many new churches being built in Belfast at the time. It was this high standard of work that gave the Crown the reputation of being one of the finest Victorian Gin Palaces of its time.
In 1978 the National Trust, following persuasion by people including Sir John Betjeman, purchased the property and three years later completed a \u00a3400,000 renovation to restore the bar to its original Victorian state. Further restoration by the National Trust was done in 2007 at a cost of \u00a3500,000. As a NT member myself it would be nice to get a free pint on production of my NT membership card. I might take that up with them.
The pub was used as a location in David Caffrey's Divorcing Jack (1998), a film following Colin Bateman's character Dan Starkey through a web of political intrigue and Irish sectarian violence. I would fully recommend the book and many more of his books in the same style.
The exterior is decorated in polychromatic tiles. This includes a mosaic of a Crown on the floor of the entrance. The interior is also decorated with complex mosaics of tiles. The red granite topped bar is of an altar style, with a heated footrest underneath and is lit by gas lamps on the highly decorative carved ceilings.
The Crown has ten booths, or snugs. Built to accommodate the pub's more reserved customers during the austere Victorian period, the snugs feature the original gun metal plates for striking matches and an antique bell system for alerting staff. Extra privacy was then afforded by the pub's etched and stained glass windows which feature painted shells, fairies, pineapples, fleurs-de-lis and clowns.
This has been formed from 29 images and the original size is 17000x7000 pixels.

Mansun were formed in Chester, England in 1995 by Draper and King. The band's foundations were cemented with the addition of Chad, who worked behind the bar at the Fat Cat pub in Chester and they began rehearsing at Crash Rehearsal Studios in Liverpool, where the band would be discovered by a passing A&
R man and offered a publishing contract.
The band were originally called 'Grey Lantern' but changed their name to 'Manson', after the cult leader Charles Manson but were forced to change it due to copyright issues. The band gave several false accounts of this at the time, one being that they were named after The Verve b-side 'A Man Called Sun', and that 'Manson' was simply a spelling mistake which accidentally went through to production. It was reported that Charles Manson had started spelling his name with a 'U', to which Draper joked that perhaps they should sue him.
Early EPs were followed by the critically acclaimed album Attack Of The Grey Lantern which appeared to contain a conceptual storyline - heavily debated by fans - whilst ending with a hidden track (An Open Letter To The Lyrical Trainspotter, previously featured on Three EP) proclaiming sarcastically 'The lyrics aren't supposed to mean that much'. The band's debut LP knocked fellow Parlophone act Blur's 1997 self-titled album from the top spot of the British album chart. Radiohead are quoted as saying, at that year's Q Awards, that the album was 'a real musical achievement'. Draper stated that the lyrics from this era were written whilst when he was a kid and influenced by The Goon Show and Monty Python

Lady Chatterley's Lover is a novel by D. H. Lawrence, first published in 1928. The first edition was printed in Florence, Italy
it could not be published openly in the United Kingdom until 1960. (A private edition was issued by Inky Stephensen's Mandrake Press in 1929).
The book soon became notorious for its story of the physical relationship between a working-class man and an aristocratic woman, its explicit descriptions of sex, and its use of (at the time) unprintable words.
The story is said to have originated from events in Lawrence's own unhappy domestic life, and he took inspiration for the settings of the book from Eastwood in Nottinghamshire where he grew up. According to some critics, the fling of Lady Ottoline Morrell with 'Tiger', a young stonemason who came to carve plinths for her garden statues, also influenced the story.
Lawrence at one time considered calling the novel Tenderness and made significant alterations to the text and story in the process of its composition. It has been published in three different versions.
The story concerns a young married woman, Constance (Lady Chatterley), whose upper-class husband, Clifford Chatterley, has been paralyzed and rendered impotent. Her sexual frustration leads her into an affair with the gamekeeper, Oliver Mellors. This novel is about Constance's realization that she cannot live with the mind alone
she must also be alive physically.
Even by chapter three Connie's jerking and twitching runs through her body like restlessness...

I remember discovering this on the Stanley Road album when Weller was being confirmed in Q etc as 'The Guvnor'. His Style Council days were thankfully by then behind him. This is pretty much a perfect album. Collaborations from Steve Winwood, Noel Gallagher and Steve Cradock of OCS (that's Ocean Colour Scene, not Office Cleaning Services in case you were wondering) pepper the album and (hope you like the link), the classic cover was designed by Peter Blake, designer of The Beatles' Sgt Pepper's album.
Paul Weller was actually born 'John William Weller' 25th May 1958, in Sheerwater, near Woking, Surrey. Weller was born into a working-class family. His father worked in the building trade as a scaffolder and a bricklayer, and his mother worked as a cleaner. Weller was brought up in Stanley Road, Woking in a Victorian council house, which had an outside toilet but neither hot running water nor central heating.
Woking is the town in which the Martians first land in H. G. Wells' science fiction novel The War of the Worlds. If you have ever been there you will realise why.

'The Bottle' is a song by American soul artist Gil Scott-Heron and musician Brian Jackson, released in 1974 on Strata-East Records in the United States.
The song was issued as the first and only single for Scott-Heron's and Jackson's album Winter in America (1974). It became an underground and cult hit upon its release, and the single peaked at number 15 on the R&
B Singles Chart. Cited by music critics as the album's best recording, the commercial success of 'The Bottle' helped lead to Jackson's and Scott-Heron's next recording contract with Arista Records. Similar to other compositions by Scott-Heron, the song has been sampled extensively by hip hop artists.

The Liverpool Cains brewery was founded by Irish immigrant Robert Cain in 1858 when he was able to buy an established brewery. Cain had begun his brewing career aged 24 when he purchased a pub and brewed his own ales.
Within 25 years of founding his brewery, Cain had established 200 pubs, including The Philharmonic Dining Rooms, The Vines and the Central Commercial Hotel, which are currently listed as being of architectural merit. His personal mansion had each window arch inscribed with his monogram. In 1887 construction began on a second brewery.
In 1921, 14 years after Cain's death, the Cains brewery merged with Walkers of Warrington becoming Walker Cains. Then in 1923 the original Stanhope Street Brewery was sold to Higsons, who continued to brew Cains ales.
In 1985, Higsons was bought by Boddingtons of Manchester. Five years later Boddingtons opted to concentrate on pub ownership and sold all its breweries to Whitbread, at which point the Stanhope Street site was closed.
Since that time, the site has been re-opened by Danes, rescued by the Asian Dusanj brothers and neared administration again. Today it still brews a nice range of real ales and lager. The Brewery Tap (or The Grapes Inn as was), pictured here is an interesting place for a few pints of Cains or Cains. It is about a 15min walk from Liverpool Lime street.
Cains was the official beer of Liverpool's 2008 European Capital of Culture celebrations. For a full story of the Cains history checkout 'Chris Routledge's fine tome 'The Story of Liverpool in a Pint'.

It is matured for upto 71 days in total. The various styles contain up to 6.6% alcohol by volume and are generally supplied in distinctive bottles. IPA (India Pale Ale matured 55 days), Triple Matured (darker at 99 days), Original (77 days) and Canadian Day Cask, packaged in an ambitious red box (like a malt whisky - 71 days).

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4535145127 - 'When in Rome as they say..... Here you can see the copper pot stills, each over 20 feet high. Malt is whisky made entirely from malted barley and distilled in an onion-shaped pot still such as these.
Ledaig is the original name for the Tobermory Scotch whisky distillery on the isle of Mull, western Scotland. The distillery was founded in 1798 and the present buildings were erected during its first period of operation which continued until 1826. The distillery was 'silent' for long periods in the mid 1800s and mid 1900s and was twice revived during the 1970s. Now it has been revived again
The distillery belongs currently to Burn Stewart, closed in 1975, and reopened in 1990. Its main product, Tobermory single malt is used in the blends 'Scottish Leader' and 'Black Prince'. The distillery also produces a smaller amount of peated whisky, Ledaig (not quite as peaty as Lafroig). It is just to the left of the colourful harbour.
Single Malts mature at the Deanston Distillery in sherry and bourbon casks, they are then returned to Tobermory for the last few years. Burn Stewart also own this facility. Tobermory the Malt Scotch Whisky is presented in a bottle with an enamelled label. It is a vatted malt containing some Tobermory whiskies of up to 20-years old and proportions of newly-mature spirit from elsewhere.
Vatted malt is blended from malt whiskies from different distilleries. If a whisky is labelled 'pure malt' or just 'malt' it is almost certain to be a vatted whisky. This is also sometimes labelled as 'blended malt' whisky.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4414472726 - 'Ahh, a nice pot of Fairtrade tea or fancy coffee and a freshly baked cake. What more could you ask for on a Saturday morning when taking your books back to Lymm library in Davies Way.
The Sanctuary cafe is between the library and Brookfield Roads' United Reformed Church (Thomas Risley Church) and can be reached from either. Its thankfully christian with a small c, even nicer when you grew up as a card carrying fallen catholic like myself.
They are usually open from about 9.30am where a fresh bacon butty (or Lymm folk may well call them Bacon Sarnies - I dont know) is a good way to start the day. They will toast it too if you ask. There is a corner for kids to play if you have a small one in tow. Lawrence the gaffer does a good job and the volunteers will always go that extra mile for you.
They have some fairtrade nic-naks on offer usually and its a nice change from the other village alternatives. A nice it of sanctuary now my ears had settled down from the night before www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/4409614624/

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4231716225 - 'The always welcoming Bow Bar in Victoria Street, Edinburgh (just before hitting the Grass Market). A constant fixture in the CAMRA good beer guide.
A truly compact place awash with old Tay ferry crossing timetables, metal signs and Beer/Whisky mirrors. A true one off and one of my watering holes whenever I get the chance to pop into the old town. Unfortunatly no longer has Cressers brush shop opposite.
This place is up there in the premier league of classic pubs with the Crown in Belfast, Philharmonic in Liverpool www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3804831303/ and the Circus Tavern in Manchester.
Happy New Year and Hogmanay to everyone who follows my photostream :-)

Burton upon Trent, also known as Burton-on-Trent or simply Burton, is a large town straddling the River Trent in the east of Staffordshire, England. Its associated adjective is 'Burtonian'.
Burton is best known for its brewing heritage, home to over a dozen breweries in its heyday. It originally grew up around Burton-on-Trent Abbey, the monastery of St. Modwen, and had grown into a busy market town by the early modern period. While Burton's great bridge over the Trent was in poor repair by the early 16th century it served as 'a comen passage to and fro many countries to the grett releff and comfort of travellyng people', according to the abbot. The town, which had an estimated population of 64,449 (2001 Census), lies within the National Forest.
