Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJ3YR6 - Buxton Opera House is in The Square, Buxton, Derbyshire, England. It is a 902-seat opera house that hosts the annual Buxton Festival and the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival, among others, as well as pantomime at Christmas, musicals and other entertainments year-round. Hosting live performances until 1927, the theatre then was used mostly as a cinema until 1976. In 1979, it was refurbished and reopened as a venue for live performance.
The Buxton Opera House was built in 1903 and designed by Frank Matcham, who designed the London Palladium, the London Coliseum and many other theatres throughout the UK. The first production at the theatre was Mrs Willoughby's Kiss. The Opera House ran as a successful theatre, receiving touring companies until 1927, when it was turned into a cinema. Silent films were shown until 1932 when the theatre was wired for sound and could present talkies. The Opera House also became the venue for an annual summer theatre festival from 1936 to 1942, two of them in conjunction with Lilian Baylis and her London-based Old Vic company. People who performed at the opera house include the actor Alec Guinness, the comedians Ken Dodd, Peter Kay, Harry Hill, Sarah Millican and John Bishop, the musical artists Howard Jones, Aled Jones, Leo Sayer and Razorlight, and the ballerina Anna Pavlova.
After the Second World War, the theatre continued to serve primarily as a cinema. The building was designated a Grade II* listed building in 1970. The Opera House gradually fell into disrepair.
In 1979, the building was restored, and an orchestra pit was added to the original Matcham design. Since then, the Opera House has been a full-time venue for stage productions, presenting approximately 450 performances per year

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTD2N0 - Serenity is a large mural by street art duo SNIK at the back of the Greater Manchester Police Museum & Archives. It is a tribute to all women that stand against injustice. Over 100 years ago the Suffragettes gathered around the corner in Stevenson Square in a stance for equality so it is fitting that this mural is located just off the square on Little Lever Street.
This piece was organised by the Cities of Hope project.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2J880DY - In presentations I have (mistakenly) cited the phrase Gileric Gowns' as an archaic term that has fallen out of favour, alongside others such as Calicoes' and Flannelettes'. In fact Gileric' was a label, or brand, within the H.A. Howard & Sons stable of products. In comments under this blog post, a descendent of the Howard family states that the word was formed by the conjunction of Gil and Eric, two brothers that ran the business started by their father H.A. Howard. (Any association with Eric Gill is entirely coincidental!)
An additional comment remarks that the sign itself was uncovered in 1991, which would partially explain its good condition. However, it has almost certainly been repainted since then. The building, a former lead works known at Junction Works, was Grade II listed in 1994, and a photograph that accompanies this listing on HIstoric England shows very fresh paintwork in place.
The listing also states that there was a conversion in progress at time of survey and my hunch is that the developers took the decision to retouch the sign, which would fit with a 1991 (re)discovery as part of the same works. (It would appear that not all new residents were entirely happy with the new flats!)
The firm itself was incorporated in the late 1940s, although prior to this the premises were occupied by Howard Alex. and Co, blouse manufacturers, which seems likely to have been related, perhaps under a different ownership structure. They remained in business until the 1980s, although from 1970 renamed themselves as HA Howard and Sons (Gileric), emphasising what was clearly their flagship product.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFFP29 - Lymm Dickensian Christmas Festival takes place in Lymm each year, and spreads good tidings and Christmas cheer!
When does the Lymm Dickensian Festival take place?
The Lymm Dickensian Christmas Festival is an annual event, which has taken place for over a quarter of a century in Lymm Village. It is held on the second Saturday in December and is organised and run by the Lymm Dickensian Charity Committee.
Every year the Lymm community comes together with the support of the Lymm Parish Council to take the village back in time to a different era, when Dickens was alive, and where you might see Ebenezer Scrooge strolling through the streets. All of the community becomes involved, and Father Christmas himself takes time out of his busy pre Christmas schedule to attend the event.
There is a festival parade to entertain visitors, where you will see floats from local schools, vintage cars and horse-drawn carriages and of course Santa and his elves. Throughout the village there will be stalls selling local goods, and spreading Christmas cheer. Punch and Judy also take a turn to entertain, along with jugglers, street performers, musicians and Morris Dancers.
It's all in a good cause
All of the profits raised by the Lymm Dickensian Charity Committee each year are donated to a chosen charity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT2T6 - A kilt (Scottish Gaelic: fèileadh [ˈfeːləɣ])[1] is a type of knee-length non-bifurcated skirt with pleats at the back, originating in the traditional dress of Gaelic men and boys in the Scottish Highlands. It is first recorded in the 16th century as the great kilt, a full-length garment whose upper half could be worn as a cloak. The small kilt or modern kilt emerged in the 18th century, and is essentially the bottom half of the great kilt. Since the 19th century, it has become associated with the wider culture of Scotland, and more broadly with Gaelic or Celtic heritage. It is most often made of woollen cloth in a tartan pattern.
Although the kilt is most often worn on formal occasions and at Highland games and other sports events, it has also been adapted as an item of informal male clothing, returning to its roots as an everyday garment. Particularly in North America, kilts are now made for casual wear in a variety of materials. Alternative fastenings may be used and pockets inserted to avoid the need for a sporran. Kilts have also been adopted as female wear for some sports.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9DNM - A necktie or simply tie is a long piece of cloth worn for decorative purposes around the neck or shoulders, resting under the shirt collar and knotted at the throat.
Variants include the ascot tie, bow tie, bolo tie, zipper tie, cravat and clip-on tie. The modern necktie, ascot, and bow tie are descended from the cravat. Neck ties are generally unsized, but may be available in a longer size. Men and boys wear neckties as part of regular office attire or formal wear.
Neckties can also be worn as part of a uniform (e.g. military, school and waitstaff), whereas some choose to wear them as everyday clothing attire. Neckties are traditionally worn with the top shirt button fastened, and the tie knot resting between the collar points. Among younger men, neckties are sometimes worn as a casual item, tied loosely around the neck, with the top shirt button unfastened

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DED35F - The sporran (/ˈspɒrən/
Scottish Gaelic for purse), a traditional part of male Scottish Highland dress, is a pouch that performs the same function as pockets on the pocketless kilt. Made of leather or fur, the ornamentation of the sporran is chosen to complement the formality of dress worn with it. The sporran is worn on a leather strap or chain, conventionally positioned in front of the groin of the wearer.
Since the traditional kilt does not have pockets, the sporran serves as a wallet and container for any other necessary personal items. It is essentially a survival of the common European medieval belt-pouch, superseded elsewhere as clothing came to have pockets, but continuing in the Scottish Highlands because of the lack of these accessories in traditional dress. The sporran hangs below the belt buckle
and much effort is made to match their style and design. The kilt belt buckle can be very ornate, and contain similar motifs to the sporran cantle and the Sgian Dubh. Early sporrans would have been worn suspended from the belt on one or other of the hips, rather than hung from a separate strap in front of the wearer.
When driving a car, dancing, playing drums, or engaging in any activity where a heavy pouch might encumber the wearer, the sporran can be turned around the waist to let it hang on the hip in a more casual position

Are you a fan of Wildian campishness? August, always a mad busy crazy time in Edinburgh, during the festival and fringe, which seems to have grown even bigger than the tattoo and festival. If you can't catch any Oscar Wilde here, then we are in trouble...
As the blurb says:
An impertinent epilogue to 'The Importance Of Being Earnest' by Robin Johnson (the writer of Stitched Up).
'There are certain rules for surviving a drawing-room farce. Look over your plans for the next few days. If they are harebrained, reconsider. If a case of humourous mistaken identity arises, politely correct it before it gets out of hand. Resist the temptation to entrust any crucial task to a comic buffoon. Avoid the company of country vicars, austere aunts, village policemen and crossdressers. Do not pretend that a living person is dead or vice versa.'

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (The Fringe) is the world's largest arts festival, with the 2012 event spanning 25 days totalling over 2,695 shows from 47 countries in 279 venues. Established in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival, it takes place annually in Scotland's capital, in the month of August. The Fringe is a showcase for the performing arts, particularly theatre and comedy (which has seen substantial growth in recent years), although dance and music are also represented. In 2012, 36% of shows were comedy and 28% theatrical productions. Theatrical productions range from the classics of ancient Greece to William Shakespeare, Samuel Beckett and contemporary works. In 2012, 1,418 shows were having their world premiere.
The Fringe is an unjuried festival – with no selection committee, and therefore any type of performance may participate. The Fringe has often showcased experimental works that might not be invited to a more conservative arts festival. In addition to ticketed, programmed events, the Festival has included a street fair, located primarily on the Royal Mile. The Festival is organized by the Festival Fringe Society, which publishes the programme, sells tickets, and offers advice to performers. Their offices are on the Royal Mile.

John Foxx And The Maths is a musical project featuring electronic music pioneers John Foxx and Benge. The duo were initially a studio based project working from Benge's studio in Shoreditch, London but have also engaged in live work. They specialise in the use of analogue synthesisers and drum machines and have released two albums, Interplay and The Shape of Things, both in 2011.
You will perhaps know John Foxx as a founder member of 1970's band Ultravox. In December 2009 the official John Foxx website Metamatic announced Foxx's new musical project. Benge had already broken the news on his own blog in November calling The Maths 'a new album project'.
An initial single Destination / September Town was released in December 2009 as download only from Townsend Records and later via i-tunes. The duo continued to work in Benge's studio in Shoreditch throughout 2010 and some new tracks were previewed at the Short Circuit electronic music festival held at The Roundhouse in London on 5 June 2010.
A new album entitled Interplay was announced in January 2011containing this track and released on March 21. The official website described the album as 'moody and atmospheric, but also full of songs that are actually more ”pop” than avant garde, Interplay pulls various strands of electronic music together – from early electro to 70s Krautrock, even flashes of Cabaret Voltaire and Foxx’s first band, Ultravox!'
The album gained much critical acclaim with The Quietus calling it 'one of the finest electronic records you will hear in 2011.
I had the pleasure of seeing them at the Manchester Academy in late 2011 - www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/6280475123/

This is a shot of Caroline, a great lady who I was introduced to when taking some fashion shots last November. A fantastic bundle of fun who probably once you know her better, you could trust your life to.
Here she sports a lovely LBD (Little black dress) and the type of difficult to light hat that photographers hate.
An LBD. A Little Black Number. They say no lady's wardrobe is complete without one. Wearing black might not make those extra pounds disappear, but you can trick the eye into believing they have. Caroline doesn't need slimming effects and is a healthy 8-10.
As a general rule though, dressing from head to toe in a single color will instantly make you look slimmer. This is because wearing one color gives you a straight vertical line to look at and doesn’t emphasize any particular areas. When you wear more than one color, the eye is instantly attracted to where the break occurs, which is usually around the waist.
Black increases that slimming illusion because it does not reflect light. Other colors are affected by light, projecting reflections or casting shadows in areas where your body curves or the material bends and wrinkles. Black, on the other hand, doesn’t have this effect, so any imperfections remain hidden under the clothes. In short, black is a very effective color for hiding bulges, lumps and bumps. White highlights all shadows, making bulges and lumps prominent and causing the exact opposite effect of wearing black.
Beware, the slimming effect of black is somewhat diminished if you wear shiny materials like Lycra, satin or sequins. The shine on the clothes will produce reflections and sometimes shadows, depending on the type of cloth. It’s also important to remember that the slimming illusion of black only works from the back or front. If you stand sideways, the shape of your body becomes evident again

The Motels are a New Wave music band from the Los Angeles area best known for 'Only the Lonely' and 'Suddenly Last Summer', each of which peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982 and 1983, respectively. Their song 'Total Control' reached no 4 on the Australian charts in 1980. Martha Davis (born January 19, 1951), the lead singer, reformed a version of the band called 'The Motels featuring Martha Davis' in 1998
as of 2010 she continues to appear under that name with various line-ups of musicians.
In March 1978, Davis and lead guitarist Jeff Jourard (formerly of a pre-fame version of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) decided to reform his early 70's band, The Motels. Extensive auditions resulted in a new line-up of the band being formed, consisting of Jourard's brother Marty, who played both the saxophone and keyboards, Michael Goodroe on bass, and Brian Glascock on drums. Short on funds, the band shared rehearsal space with The Go-Go's at L.A.'s notorious punk basement, The Masque, and they played in Chinatown, at Madame Wong's restaurant/nightclub with such regularity that they were almost considered the house band.
The Motels began to draw faithful crowds around the L.A. music scene and on Mother's Day 1979 the group signed with Capitol Records, releasing their debut album The Motels four months later. Their first single, 'Closets and Bullets', made no impact on the charts, but their second single release, 'Total Control', found its way to the Top 20 in France and the Top 10 in Australia.
In 1980 Jourard was replaced as lead guitarist by Davis' boyfriend Tim McGovern and the band went back into the recording studio to record their second album, Careful. Released in June 1980, the album climbed to the no 45 spot on the Billboard 200 chart in the U.S. In Europe and the UK, the songs 'Days Are OK' and 'Whose Problem?' became Top 50 hits
'Whose Problem?' was also a top hit in Australia and 'Danger' was a Top 20 hit in France.
The band hired record producer Val Garay for their third album, Apocalypso. It was scheduled to be released in November 1981, but after Capitol Records heard the final product, they rejected it for being 'not commercial enough' and 'too weird'. The band attempted to go back and re-record the entire album but in the process, Davis and McGovern's relationship dissolved and by December 1981 McGovern was no longer in the band (McGovern subsequently formed the band Burning Sensations).
The rest of the band members forged on to finish recording the new album, utilizing studio musicians to fill in for McGovern on several of the tracks. Adrian Peritore (who went by the name Guy Perry because his former producer had misspelled his name on an album cover) was hired in late January and played lead guitar on some of the tracks, including 'He Hit Me'. The album was released on April 5, 1982 under the title All Four One.

Ronald James Padavona (July 10, 1942 – May 16, 2010), better known as Ronnie James Dio, was an American heavy metal vocalist and songwriter.
He performed with, amongst others, Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven &
Hell, and his own band Dio. Other musical projects include the collective fundraiser Hear 'n Aid. He was widely hailed as one of the most powerful singers in heavy metal, renowned for his consistently powerful voice.
I only ever saw him on stage once, with Rainbow at Stafford's New Bingley Hall in about 1980.
He often ranks as one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time in various online polls and lists. He is credited with popularizing the 'metal horns' hand gesture in metal culture.
Prior to his death, he was collaborating on a project with former Black Sabbath bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice, under the moniker Heaven &
Hell, whose only studio album, The Devil You Know, was released on April 28, 2009.
Dio sadly died of stomach cancer on May 16, 2010. One of the last songs he recorded was titled 'Metal Will Never Die'.
The Sandbach Crosses are two 9th-century stone Anglo-Saxon crosses now erected in the market place in the town of Sandbach, Cheshire, England. They are unusually large and elaborate examples of the type and have been designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building, and are a scheduled monument.
The most recent and authoritative dating places the larger cross from the early part of the 9th century, and the smaller from about the middle of that century. Older theories, now outdated, included the view that they were erected to commemorate the conversion to Christianity of Peada of Mercia about 653.
Other sources date them to the 9th century. The original site of the crosses is unknown and it is believed that they were brought to Sandbach in the Middle Ages. The earliest documentary evidence is by William Smith, the Rouge-Dragon Pursuivant at Arms of Elizabeth I, who was from Nantwich.
In 1585 he wrote 'two square crosses of stone, on steps, with certain images and writings thereon graven [standing] hard together. Either after the Reformation or during the Civil War they were thrown down and their parts were scattered over a wide area.
Larger pieces of the crosses were found as far away as Oulton and Tarporley while smaller pieces were found on various sites in Sandbach. In the early 19th century they were collected together and in 1816 were reassembled and erected under the direction of George Ormerod, the Cheshire historian.
The crosses now consist of two upright columns set in sockets on a base of three stepped stones. The northern cross is the taller and has a mutilated head. The southern cross is truncated and has a mutilated head from a different cross.
The crosses have always been a pair and were carved by the same hand. They depict religious scenes, doll-like heads and beasts in panels, together with vine-scrolls, course interlace patterns and some dragons. Yep, here be dragons!

The red dress effect is the phenomena at which females wearing red clothing are perceived to be more sexually appealing than when wearing other colours.
Naturally, when many non-human primate females become fertile, their estrogen level rises, which causes their blood vessels to open up, leading to redness on the skin, especially near the face, chest and genitalia regions. This increased in redness has been shown to attract male counterparts, shown by their increased activity in sex, self-stimulation and attention towards the females. Therefore, there are reasons to believe of the existence of evolutionary instincts that associates red with fertility.
Many folklores, mythology and literature symbols associate red with fertility, and woman are thought to have worn the equivalent of a red lipstick as early as 10,000 B.C. and so sexual receptiveness and red may be a result of social conditioning. However, this social conditioning may have originated from biology and evolution, and is simply an extension of our primal instincts.

This classic GnR track is from The Spaghetti Incident. The album was the fifth and is unique for the band, consisting entirely of cover versions, mostly of punk and glam rock songs of the late 1970s and early 1980s. This was the last Guns N' Roses album to feature lead guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Matt Sorum.
The title is an inside joke referring to a food fight between Axl Rose and Steven Adler involving spaghetti. Much was made of this food fight during Adler's resolution lawsuit with the band in 1993, in which Adler's attorney referred to it as 'the Spaghetti Incident'. The meaning was explained by drummer Matt Sorum in a 1994 interview with Much Music and confirmed by Slash in his autobiography, 'Slash'.
The album has seen mixed reviews since its release. Rolling Stone magazine gave the album a 3.5 out of 5 stars. Allmusic said 'As punk albums go, The Spaghetti Incident? lacks righteous anger and rage. As Guns N' Roses albums go, it's a complete delight, returning to the ferocious, hard-rocking days of Appetite for Destruction'.
Always nice to see some leather with lace.

Bumfluff soon followed and a recognition that girls in the year were going through changes too. You could see from the older years and the sixth form where that process would take them. Opaque tights, filled out hips. Maybe a taste of something to come, forbidden fruit or just something in later years to regret. Bored adults staying together for the sake of a child maybe.
Not something that crosses the mind at the back of the groundsmens hut in the old showers. Clumsy, flustered, rubbish really. A rite of passage all the same.

By the mid-nineteenth century, wearing of traditional smock-frocks by country laborers was dying out. As the authentic tradition was fading away, a romantic nostalgia for England's rural past, as epitomized by the illustrations of Kate Greenaway, led to a fashion for women's and children's dresses and blouses loosely styled after smock-frocks. These garments are generally of very fine linen or cotton and feature delicate smocking embroidery done in cotton floss in contrasting colors
smocked garments with pastel-colored embroidery remain popular for babies and small children.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4544077808 - 'Arthur's sword in Welsh legend is known as Caledfwlch. Its used by Arthur's warrior Llenlleawg the Irishman to kill the Irish king Diwrnach while stealing his magical cauldron. In Cornish the word Calesvol is used in literature to describe it and appears to have either come from the Welsh name or be an early pre-celtic word for it. At any rate the legend in various forms can be found in many northern european cultures.
Excalibur is by no means the only weapon associated with Arthur, nor the only sword, but the one that gets all the publicity.
Alfred, Lord Tennyson described it in 'The Passing of Arthur' ('Morte d'Arthur') in these words:
There drew he forth the brand Excalibur,
And o’er him, drawing it, the winter moon,
Brightening the skirts of a long cloud, ran forth
And sparkled keen with frost against the hilt:
For all the haft twinkled with diamond sparks,
Myriads of topaz-lights, and jacinth-work
Of subtlest jewellery.
The Lady of the Lake is the name of several related characters in the different legends and interpretations. The Scotsman Walter Scott transported the legend to Loch Katrine, near Callander in central Scotland. In more recent times she appears as a character in the Spamalot musical and on Richie Blackmore's Rainbow 'Long Live Rock and Roll' album from the late 1970's.
With a delicate move kind of shifty and smooth
A shadow has covered the light
Then a beam in the shade from a slivery blade
Has shattered the edge of the night
Ahhh... takes me back to my mis-spent youth!

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3875567348 - 'A wedding image in blue toned black and white monochrome within the great neogothic town hall in Manchester, which is a designated site for marriage ceremonies.
Designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse in 1877 as a town hall for a prosperous emerging city, the building features imposing murals by the artist Ford Madox Brown depicting important events in the history of the city. The Town Hall was rated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building in 1952 and the Town Hall Extension, completed in 1938, was Grade II* listed in 1974.
The choice of Albert Square as location was influenced by a desire to provide a central, accessible, but relatively quiet site in a respectable district, close to Manchester's banks and municipal offices, next to a large open area, suitable for the display of a fine building.
The foundation stone of the new Town Hall was laid on 26th October 1868 by the Lord Mayor of Manchester, Robert Neill. The Town Hall was opened by Lord Mayor Abel Heywood, on 13 September 1877, after Queen Victoria's snubbed the city and refusal to attend the opening.
As you enter on the floor is a mosaic depicting the bee, the symbol of Manchester's being a hive of industry during the 19th century. The bee also used be on the Boddingtons beer logo. A history going back to 1778 was ended when last family chairman Ewart Boddington sold the Strangeways brewery and the Boddingtons brand to Whitbread for £50.7 million. In May 2000, the Whitbread Beer Company was acquired by brewing conglomerate Interbrew. In 2004 brewing was moved from the original site next to Manchester's main victorian prison. Cask Boddingtons is still brewed in Manchester however, at teh former Kestral Lager brewary at Moss Side.
Reasuringly the town hall tower is still topped by a golden cotton seed ball, the original source of the city's wealth. That will not go the way of Strangeways brewery.
