Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJD0A3 - Editorial photograph shows the interior of a traditional coin-operated laundrette at 264 Knutsford Road, Latchford, Warrington, stock-photo/gotonysmith-Cheshire.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>Cheshire. Rows of commercial washing machines and tumble dryers line the small room, with folding benches, detergent, wall notices and simple instruction signs creating the familiar practical look of a self-service laundry. The image was taken indoors in bright artificial light and records a type of local service that was once far more common on British town streets. Online local directories list Coin-Op Launderette at 264 Knutsford Road, Warrington, WA4 1AZ, confirming the address and continued association with laundry services. Launderettes became a familiar urban and suburban feature in Britain after the mid twentieth century, especially for people in rented rooms, flats, older terraces, student housing, shared accommodation or homes without space for reliable white goods. Their decline has been linked to cheaper domestic washing machines, rising rents, utility costs and changing habits, although they still remain useful for large loads, duvets, emergencies, people without machines, and customers needing washing and drying away from home. The photograph is useful for features on high street change, cost of living, domestic labour, working-class history, service businesses, energy use, social history, rented housing, single-person households, students, older residents, sustainability and the disappearance of practical neighbourhood facilities. It also speaks to the quieter geography of local convenience, where a small laundrette can support residents who may not own a car, have a working machine or have enough indoor drying space. For stock buyers, the value lies in the authentic, unmodernised look of the room, the visible coin-op equipment, the precise Warrington location and the wider story of a once familiar service surviving when most British homes now expect access to washing machines and tumble dryers.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E9ANW3 - Close view of a bright Green Party Vote Green election banner fixed to railings in the front garden of a suburban brick house, with a Boycott Israel poster visible inside the window behind it. The image records a politically expressive domestic frontage, where party campaigning, local election messaging and international protest politics occupy the same residential space. The bold green sign, white lettering, front garden wall, hanging basket and window details give the scene a distinctly British suburban character, useful for editorial stories about doorstep politics, climate campaigning, progressive voters and protest movements.
The photograph works as stock imagery for coverage of the Green Party, local democracy, general elections, council elections, canvassing, political posters, campaign signage and the way private homes become public political statements. The secondary window poster adds a current affairs angle, connecting domestic political identity with boycott activism, Palestine and Israel related campaigning, consumer protest, ethical shopping, human rights campaigning and foreign policy.
It is relevant to articles examining how environmental politics can overlap with anti-war, social justice and international solidarity causes at street level. The composition is useful because the message is clear at thumbnail size: readable words, strong colour, domestic context and a real-world setting. It could illustrate green politics, environmental voting, community activism, political polarisation, protest posters in homes, neighbourhood campaigning, election messaging in England, voter expression, democratic participation, grassroots movements, consumer boycotts and the visibility of political opinion in ordinary streets. The overcast daylight, brickwork, window reflections and garden railings create a documentary feel, suggesting a cool, mild British day outside a lived-in home during an election campaign or period of heightened public debate.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMR1 - This image shows the Vestry House, widely regarded as the oldest surviving domestic building in Walthamstow, East London. Dating from the fifteenth century, the house is a rare example of medieval timber framed architecture in the area and today forms part of the Vestry House Museum, located close to St Mary's Church in Walthamstow Village.
The building features characteristic black and white timber framing, a steeply pitched tiled roof and traditional construction methods associated with Tudor period domestic buildings. Over the centuries, the Vestry House has served a number of civic and community functions, including use as a meeting place for local parish affairs, before being preserved as a museum dedicated to local history.
In the foreground, a bright red Royal Mail pillar box provides a strong visual contrast with the muted tones of the historic structure, highlighting the coexistence of everyday modern street life with London's deep architectural past. The image was taken in daylight under bright but overcast conditions, allowing clear visibility of the building's materials, textures and surrounding streetscape.
The Vestry House remains an important heritage landmark in Walthamstow, offering a tangible link to the area's medieval origins and its gradual transformation from rural village to part of the modern city of London.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PFAAP8 - In electrical safety testing, portable appliance testing (PAT, PAT inspection or PAT testing) is a process in the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia by which electrical appliances are routinely checked for safety. The formal term for the process is in-service inspection & testing of electrical equipment. Testing involves a visual inspection of the equipment and any flexible cables for good condition, and also where required, verification of earthing (grounding) continuity, and a test of the soundness of insulation between the current carrying parts, and any exposed metal that may be touched. The formal limits for pass/fail of these electrical tests vary somewhat depending on the category of equipment being tested.
British law (the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989) requires that all electrical systems (including electrical appliances) are maintained (so far it is reasonably and practicable) to prevent danger. Private houses are not covered by this legislation, although occupiers' liability requires householders not to deliberately expose occupants or visitors to unreasonable risks. The HSE and the local authority are responsible for the policing of this legislation.
Fixed wiring in buildings
Guidance from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET, published under the IEE brand) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommends that a competent person must inspect the installation regularly in any public building or a place that people work. They suggest initial intervals for combined inspection and testing that range from three months (for construction equipment) to one year, and in many cases, longer periods for re-testing (certain types of appliance in schools, hotels, offices and shops)
Carrying out PAT
This can be done by hiring an external company to test all the electrical products in a business (someone who has had some PAT training, either by an official qualification or by attending a health and safety course

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTYF8Y - Save up to 8% in gas use, by turning down the 'flow' temperature, a tip from Money Saving expert to reduce fuel bill and poverty
A recent report by the Heating and Hot Water Council (HHIC)* found that households can save around 6-8% in gas just by turning down the heating flow temperature on their condensing combi boiler. To be clear, this is not turning down your thermostat.
Nearly all combi boilers are not optimised to run as efficiently as they should, which increases household gas bills and emits more carbon. Reducing the operating temperature for heating will help your boiler run more efficiently without reducing your comfort.
You will need to have a condensing combi boiler, i.e. a boiler that produces your heating and hot water. You will have a combi boiler if you do not have a hot water cylinder. It will definitely be a condensing boiler if it was fitted in the last 16 years. A condensing boiler will also have a white plastic pipe underneath the boiler (although it can be grey or black).
Most combi boilers have two dials: one for heating (usually with a little radiator icon over it) and one for hot water (with a little tap icon). Some only have one dial but it is usually for the heating flow temperatures. Some dials do not provide the actual temperature setting. Some like Worcester are numbered 1-6, some have dashed lines and others a curved line of increasing thickness. Some user manuals do provide additional information.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M07A98 - Remembering the 7 million women who contributed to the war effort by working in hundreds of vital jobs
This huge, bronze monument memorialises the women of World War II. It was unveiled in 2005 and the gold lettering on it is said to mimic the font of wartime ration books.
Around the outside, you can see 17 different sculpted uniforms and helmets. These uniforms represent hundreds of vital jobs undertaken by over 7 million women during the Second World War. However, when the war ended and the men returned to their jobs, women were forced to quietly hang up their uniforms and resign
they were expected to return to their lives before the war, often in more domestic roles.
Women's contribution to both the First and Second World Wars have often been historically overlooked. Unlike men, most women were not on the front line, and instead worked on the land, they were called up to be mechanics, engineers, munitions workers and air raid wardens. Women drove buses and fire-engines.
However, there were over 640,000 women in the armed forces during World War II including the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRNS). Lilian Bader joined the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) and trained to be an Instrument Repairer
in fact, she was one of the first women to qualify in that post. She became a Leading Aircraftwoman at RAF Shawbury and was then promoted to Acting Corporal.
Women like Georgina Masson, pictured below, joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) which was the women's branch of the British army. Georgina, who was born in Oxford, travelled to Trinidad where she worked as a stenographer for Ford. However, she returned to Britain in 1943 to assist the war effort, and became the first black woman Officer in the ATS. Georgina can be seen holding a copy of Picture Post magazine which features her on the cover, dressed in her ATS uniform.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MN7PMB - The United Kingdom's National Transmission System (NTS) is the network of gas pipelines that supply gas to about forty power stations and large industrial users from natural gas terminals situated on the coast, and to gas distribution companies that supply commercial and domestic users. It covers Great Britain, i.e. England, Wales and Scotland
The system originated in the construction during 19623 of the 200-mile (320 km) high-pressure methane pipeline from Canvey Island (on the Essex coast) to Leeds. Imported liquified natural gas (LNG) from Algeria was turned into gas at the Canvey terminal and supplied to the pipeline, providing eight of the twelve area gas boards with access to natural gas. The gas was initially used to manufacture town gas, either as a feedstock in gas reforming processes or to enrich lean gases such as that produced by the Lurgi coal gasification process.
The pipeline was 18-inch (460 mm) in diameter and operated at 1,000 pounds per square inch (69 bar). The pipeline had 150 miles (240 km) of spur lines, supplying gas to area boards
To exploit the availability of natural gas and to provide for more widespread distribution, construction began of a major new transmission network which became the National Transmission System

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT31E - Gas Safe Register is the official gas registration body for the United Kingdom, Isle of Man and Guernsey, appointed by the relevant Health and Safety Authority for each area. By law all gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register.
Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI as the gas registration body in Great Britain and Isle of Man on 1 April 2009 and Northern Ireland and Guernsey on 1 April 2010.
The purpose of the Gas Safe Register is to protect the public from unsafe gas work. It does this in two main ways, operation of the Register itself e.g. ensuring that the list of competent and qualified engineers is accurate and up-to-date, inspecting the work of Gas Safe registered engineers and investigating reports of illegal gas work. The second area is to conduct public awareness campaigns to raise awareness of gas safety issues.
A 2006 review by the Health and Safety Executive identified a case for change' to the CORGI scheme that had been registering gas installers since 1991. In competitive tender, Capita was appointed to overhaul the scheme and operate it for 10 years from April 2009.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF5E5 - Canal Street, the centre of the Manchester Gay Village, is a street in Manchester city centre in North West England. The pedestrianised street, which runs along the west side of the Rochdale Canal, is lined with gay bars and restaurants. At night time, and in daytime in the warmer months, the street is filled with visitors, often including gay and lesbian tourists from all over the world. The northern end of the street meets Minshull Street and the southern meets Princess Street
part of the street looks across the Rochdale Canal into Sackville Park.
90's Focus led to several of the pubs on or near Canal Street acquiring a predominantly gay clientele. In 1991, Manto (Manchester Tomorrow) bar opened at no. 46. It was built in 1989 by Benedict Smith Architects. Unlike the other gay bars at that time, Manto had large glass windows, allowing the casual passer-by to view what was going on inside. Previously, many establishments catering for the gay community were often keen to conceal activities from the general public, but the architectural design of Manto was seen as a queer visual statement of we're here, we're queer get used to it, and a brick-and-mortar refusal to hide any more, or to remain underground and invisible.
Over the next decade, more numerous and larger bars opened along the canal side, turning Canal Street into the centre of the most successful gay village in Europe. Because of this, the Canal Street street signs are regularly defaced to read Anal Treet or Anal Street. The success was further enhanced by the use of Canal Street and its bars in several television series, including Bob and Rose and Queer as Folk, both written by Russell T Davies.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXMH8 - The carrot (Daucus carota subsp. sativus
is a root vegetable, usually orange in colour, though purple, red, white, and yellow varieties exist. It has a crisp texture when fresh. The most commonly eaten part of a carrot is a taproot, although the greens are sometimes eaten as well. It is a domesticated form of the wild carrot Daucus carota, native to Europe and southwestern Asia.
The domestic carrot has been selectively bred for its greatly enlarged and more palatable, less woody-textured edible taproot. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reports that world production of carrots and turnips (these plants are combined by the FAO for reporting purposes) for calendar year 2011 was almost 35.658 million tonnes. Almost half were grown in China. Carrots are widely used in many cuisines, especially in the preparation of salads, and carrot salads are a tradition in many regional cuisines.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D91FA9 - Three Wheelie bins for different uses in a street, Warrington, Cheshire, England WA4 2PL
The wheelie bin is a waste container on wheels designed to make it easier for users to transport heavy loads of refuse to the curb or other pick-up point. More recently it has application for transporting stolen goods on bin day in residential suburbs. George Dempster invented the Dempster-Dumpster system in the 1930s for automatically loading the contents of standardized mobile steel containers onto the dustcart.
This led to the classic Dempster Dumpmaster waste collection vehicle of the 1950s, but wheelie bins did not become commonplace until the 1970s. The term dumpster is frequently used as a generic term for a large MGB or the non-mobile variety (known as a skip in the UK or Australia) in the United States. In the US residential wheelie bins are also generically called Herbie Curbies.
The modern bin is a German invention of the 1970s in a patent held by Schneider, and licensed to other companies outside Germany. The smaller wheelie bins, for domestic or light commercial use, typically hold 120 to 360 litres (26 to 79 imp gal
32 to 95 US gal), with 240 litres (53 imp gal
63 US gal) being the most common. They have a hinged flap lid and two wheels on the bottom on the same side as the lid hinge. There is a bar behind the hinge on the top of the bin which is used to move it, or to hoist it up onto a garbage truck for emptying.
The 240 litre bin is usually considered to have the same capacity as three traditional waste containers. In the UK, wheelie bins for non-recyclable domestic waste are currently collected either weekly or once a fortnight, depending on the local Council's waste management policies.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T0BDM5 - Close-up image of an iPad or tablet displaying a UK Energy Performance Certificate, or EPC, energy rating and score beside a central heating radiator in a domestic semi-detached home in Cheshire, England. The visible EPC scale shows the property currently rated G, the lowest band, with a potential improvement to C, making the photograph useful for illustrating poor home energy efficiency, fuel poverty, high heating bills, insulation upgrades, retrofit work and the challenge of improving older British housing stock. The nearby radiator valve, pipework and window detail add practical household context, linking the certificate on screen to everyday heating systems, heat loss and the cost of maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures.
Energy Performance Certificates are used across the UK housing market to show the relative energy efficiency of homes and other buildings, using rating bands from A to G. In England and Wales, EPCs are commonly required when a property is built, sold or rented, and are often referenced in discussions about minimum energy efficiency standards, landlord obligations, housing quality, decarbonisation and net zero policy. A low rating can indicate inadequate loft or wall insulation, inefficient heating, poor glazing, draughts or older building fabric, while a higher score suggests improvements through retrofit measures.
The image also has wider editorial relevance for climate adaptation and hot weather. Good insulation, controlled ventilation, shading and efficient building fabric can help keep warmth inside during winter but can also help reduce overheating risk during summer heatwaves. This makes the photograph commercially useful for articles and reports on EPC reform, domestic heating, radiator systems, energy saving advice, household bills, climate change, overheating, decarbonising homes, Cheshire housing, private renting, social housing asset management, retrofit programmes and improving the energy performance of UK homes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T0BDM1 - Taken on 01 Oct 2023, this photograph shows iPad tablet with Octopus monthly costs, near central heating boiler, in domestic property, semi-detached home, Cheshire, England, UK. The location is Great Britain, UK. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains domestic heating equipment, tablet screen information and ordinary home interior detail. The domestic heating and EPC context links the image to fuel poverty, decarbonisation, property standards, retrofitting, insulation, boiler efficiency and the cost of keeping homes warm or cool. It can be used in editorial features, business reports, local-history writing, travel guides, public-policy explainers, educational material and SEO-led stock-photo searches needing a specific real-world image. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include poor, efficiency, EPC, energy, fuel, legislation, renting, property, radiator, central heating, heating, cost, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. It also has a useful contemporary feel, because it shows how long-standing places, policies, products or institutions are encountered by ordinary people in daily life. Further SEO-friendly usage could include local services, town-centre change, heritage branding, British social history, p.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ECW4ET - The last unpopular chocolates from a celebrations tub at Christmas - the Mars Bars gives picture buyers a practical record of a subject that is familiar, searchable and tied to the way people actually use streets, buildings, services and leisure spaces. The unwanted chocolates left at the bottom of a Christmas tub say a lot about shared family rituals, brand loyalty, taste, waste and the annual supermarket battle for festive confectionery sales. The subject can support lighter editorial pieces on Christmas habits, consumer psychology, food marketing, portion sizes, household treats and the small negotiations that happen around communal snacks. Seasonal references, artificial light and winter atmosphere make it especially relevant to December and New Year picture needs. The geographic clues help editors place the subject within a recognisable locality, which is often more useful than a polished but placeless image. It would sit naturally with features on Christmas lights, festive decorations, winter evening, seasonal display, adding local texture and a believable sense of place. For archive value, terms such as unpopular, chocolates, celebrations, christmas help connect the scene to future stories about how this place or activity looked at a particular moment.
