Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RW3WYD - The origins of the pub go back to 1723 when it opened as the Dock and Duck reflecting the more country pastimes of the area. However when the British Museum was built in the 1760s, the owners decided to change the name to the British Museum Tavern in 1762 and in 1858 after a refit it became the Museum Tavern
The refit was overseen by architect William Finch Hill who was best known for his designs for Music Halls, much of his design still remains.
It's position at the entrance to the British Museum means it has for centuries been a favourite port of call for the many visitors, academics and workers in the area.
When the British Library was inside of the British Museum it attracted the great minds and thinkers, a regular user was Karl Marx and it has been said that the Museum Tavern was his ?local' whilst he was rewriting history.
Other famous visitors to the Tavern have included Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and J. B. Priestley.
There is no doubt even up to the present day a wide range of people have frequented the Museum Tavern which is part of its charm, it is a traditional London pub owned by Taylor Walker Brewery with real ales on tap and traditional food being served.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RX18BM - Manchester & District Home for Lost Dogs was founded in 1893 by a group of Manchester Businessmen who were concerned about the large number of stray dogs roaming the City.
The leading members of the group included Mr. Megson a printer and stationer, (who's firm is still very active) and Mr. Alfred Nixon a leading Chartered Accountant in Manchester, it was his son and partners who continued to play a leading part in the administration of the Home until shortly after the last war in 1945.
Over the years the City of Manchester has grown around Manchester Dogs' Home and it is now very much an inner city rescue centre. To off set the inner city environment of our Manchester Home we regenerated a run down site in 1999, that is now know as Cheshire Dogs' Home
In 1999 we purchased a former run down boarding kennels, this has become the flagship of the two homes and a Centre of Excellence. The site is 11.5 acres in total with a Specialist Care Unit for dogs that provides intense care for the dogs that need it the most, pregnant bitches, nursing mums and dogs that do not adjust well to the traditional kennel environment at Manchester Dogs' Home.
2017 New Adoption Unit - The light filled atrium is proving a popular place for visitors to meet and interact with the dogs, while each of the 30 individual kennels offers maximum comfort for our canine guests.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAJ36Y - Royal Mail to be investigated for missed delivery targets
Royal Mail is facing an investigation by the industry watchdog after it failed to meet its delivery targets over the past year.
Ofcom said it would consider whether any exceptional events explained why Royal Mail fell short.
But if there were no satisfactory explanation, the regulator said it would consider imposing a fine.
The postal service delivered only 73.7% of First Class mail within a day - far short of the 93% target.
Ofcom said the impact of Covid was no longer an excuse for poor delivery performance.
If Royal Mail is fined, it would be its second penalty since 2019 when it paid out ?1.5m for failing to deliver first class letters on time.
A Quality of Service report from Royal Mail also showed it delivered only 90.7% of second class mail within three days, below a target of 98.5%.
A spokesperson for Royal Mail said it was disappointed with its performance, adding: We will participate fully with any Ofcom's investigation.
Ofcom takes quality of service very seriously, the regulator said. In deciding whether the company is in breach of its obligations, we will consider if there were any exceptional events - beyond the company's control - that may have explained why it missed its targets. If it does not provide a satisfactory explanation and we determine that Royal Mail has failed to comply with its obligations, we may consider whether to impose a financial penalty, it said.
On Friday, Royal Mail's chief executive Simon Thompson announced that he would leave, meaning the company will soon be searching for its third boss in five years.
Royal Mail said its services had been affected by 18 days of strike action and that high levels of staff absence continued to hamper operations.
It said it hoped an agreement reached last month with Communication Workers Union (CWU) would resolve the matter and allow it to rapidly improve its services.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNYX - This image shows countryside warning signs attached to a wooden farm gate, advising visitors to pick up after their dogs and to keep all dogs on leads. Such signs are commonly used across rural England to balance public access with farming, wildlife protection, and land management.
Dog control notices are particularly important near livestock, crops, and wildlife habitats, helping to reduce disturbance and maintain good relationships between landowners and walkers. The rural setting, with fencing, trees, and traditional brick houses in the background, places the scene firmly within the English countryside.
The warm evening light adds atmosphere while reinforcing themes of responsible access, rural etiquette, and countryside conservation. The image is suitable for editorial and commercial use covering dog ownership, countryside access, rural life, land management, public rights of way, and environmental responsibility.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39XGA - Canary Wharf is an area of London, England, located near the Isle of Dogs in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Canary Wharf is defined by the Greater London Authority as being part of London's central business district, alongside Central London.[1] With the City of London, it constitutes one of the main financial centres in the United Kingdom and the world, containing many high-rise buildings including the third-tallest in the UK, One Canada Square, which opened on 26 August 1991.
Developed on the site of the former West India Docks, Canary Wharf contains around 16,000,000 sq ft (1,500,000 m2) of office and retail space. It has many open areas, including Canada Square, Cabot Square and Westferry Circus. Together with Heron Quays and Wood Wharf, it forms the Canary Wharf Estate, around 97 acres (39 ha) in area.
Canary Wharf is located on the West India Docks on the Isle of Dogs.
In October 1995, an international consortium that included investors such as Alwaleed, bought control for $1.2 billion. Paul Reichmann, of Olympia & York, was named chairman, and Canary Wharf went public in 1999. The new company was called Canary Wharf Limited, and later became Canary Wharf Group.
In 1997, some residents living on the Isle of Dogs launched a lawsuit against Canary Wharf Ltd for private nuisance because the tower interfered with TV signals. The residents lost the case.
Recovery in the property market generally, coupled with continuing demand for large floorplate Grade A office space, slowly improved the level of interest. A critical event in the recovery was the much-delayed start of work on the Jubilee Line Extension, which the government wanted ready for the Millennium celebrations.
In March 2004, Canary Wharf Group plc. was taken over by a consortium of investors, backed by its largest shareholder Glick Family Investments and led by Morgan Stanley using a vehicle named Songbird Estates plc.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WDGW - This image shows a brightly coloured charity donation statue representing Guide Dogs, a UK-based organisation that provides assistance dogs and mobility support for people who are blind or partially sighted. The statue depicts an adult guide dog with a puppy and carries the fundraising message Every Penny Counts, encouraging small public donations.
Guide Dogs is one of the UK's best-known disability charities, relying heavily on public fundraising to breed, train, and support working guide dogs and their handlers. Donation statues like this are commonly placed outside shops and in busy public areas, serving both as collection points and as visual reminders of the charity's work.
The friendly, cartoon-like design of the statue is intended to be approachable and recognisable, appealing to adults and children alike. The bright yellow colouring ensures high visibility in street environments, while the inclusion of a puppy reinforces themes of care, training, and long-term commitment.
Photographed in daylight in a public setting, the image is suitable for editorial use covering charity fundraising, disability support, sight loss awareness, community giving, social care, and the role of voluntary organisations in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WDHN - Battersea Power Station is a decommissioned Grade II* listed coal-fired power station, located on the south bank of the River Thames, in Nine Elms, Battersea, in the London Borough of Wandsworth. It was built by the London Power Company (LPC) to the design of Leonard Pearce, Engineer in Chief to the LPC, and CS Allott & Son Engineers. The architects were J. Theo Halliday and Giles Gilbert Scott. The station is one of the world's largest brick buildings and notable for its original, Art Deco interior fittings and decor.
The building comprises two power stations, built in two stages, in a single building. Battersea A Power Station was built between 1929 and 1935 and Battersea B Power Station, to its east, between 1937 and 1941, when construction was paused owing to the worsening effects of the Second World War. The building was completed in 1955. Battersea B was built to a design nearly identical to that of Battersea A, creating the iconic four-chimney structure.
Battersea A was decommissioned in 1975. In 1980 the whole structure was given Grade II listed status
Battersea B shut three years later. In 2007 its listed status was upgraded to Grade II*. The building remained empty until 2014, during which time it fell into near ruin. Various plans were made to make use of the building, but none were successful. In 2012, administrators Ernst & Young entered into an exclusivity agreement with Malaysia's S P Setia and Sime Darby to develop the site to include 253 residential units, bars, restaurants, office space (occupied by Apple and No. 18 business members club), shops and entertainment spaces. The plans were approved and redevelopment commenced a few years later. As of 2021, the building and the overall 42-acre (17 ha) site development is owned by a consortium of Malaysian investors.

A cyclist is seen emerging from the red brick and stone entrance building, highlighting the tunnel's continued use as a key non-motorised crossing beneath the River Thames.
Opened in 1902, the Greenwich Foot Tunnel was constructed to provide free access for pedestrians between Greenwich and what is now the Canary Wharf area, supporting workers travelling to docks and industrial sites on both sides of the river. Today it remains an important route for commuters, residents, and visitors, particularly for walking and cycling, although cyclists are required to dismount within the tunnel itself.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WDYG - The Greenwich Foot Tunnel crosses beneath the River Thames in East London, linking Greenwich (Royal Borough of Greenwich) on the south bank with Millwall (London Borough of Tower Hamlets) on the north. Approximately 4,000 people use the tunnel each day. It opened in 1902.
The tunnel was designed by civil engineer Sir Alexander Binnie for London County Council and constructed by contractor John Cochrane & Co. The project started in June 1899 and the tunnel opened on 4 August 1902. The tunnel replaced an expensive and sometimes unreliable ferry service allowing workers living south of the Thames to reach their workplaces in the London docks and shipyards in or near the Isle of Dogs. Its creation owed much to the efforts of working-class politician Will Crooks, who had worked in the docks and, after chairing the LCC's Bridges Committee responsible for the tunnel, later served as Labour MP for Woolwich.
The section of the tunnel that was repaired following damage during World War II
The entrance shafts at both ends are beneath glazed domes. Lifts, installed in 1904, were upgraded in 1992 and again in 2012, and helical staircases allow pedestrians to access the tile-lined tunnel, which slopes gently from both sides down to a midway lowpoint beneath the river. The cast-iron tunnel is 1,215 feet (370.2 m) long, 50 feet (15.2 m) deep and has an internal diameter of about 9 feet (2.74 m). The cast-iron rings are coated with concrete and surfaced with some 200,000 white glazed tiles. The northern end was damaged by bombs during the Second World War and repairs included a thick steel and concrete inner lining that substantially reduces the diameter for a short distance. The northern shaft staircase has 87 steps
the southern one has 100.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WDYT - This image shows an upward-looking detail view of the Cutty Sark in Greenwich, South East London, focusing on the ship's tall masts, complex rigging, and decorative bow section. The photograph was taken in the evening, with soft, fading daylight and patches of blue sky and cloud providing a dramatic backdrop to the historic vessel.
Built in 1869, the Cutty Sark is one of the last surviving tea clippers and a powerful symbol of Britain's maritime and trading past. The intricate network of ropes, spars, and yards visible in the image illustrates the sophistication of 19th-century sailing technology and the skills required to operate such vessels at speed across global trade routes.
The evening light enhances contrast and texture, drawing attention to the craftsmanship of the ship's construction and the elegant lines of its rigging. By isolating the upper structure of the vessel against the sky, the image emphasises scale, height, and the enduring visual drama of tall ships.
This photograph is well suited to editorial use covering maritime history, historic ships, nautical engineering, heritage tourism, London landmarks, and atmospheric studies of historic vessels at dusk or in evening light.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WE19 - This image shows a directional sign for the Thames Path in Maritime Greenwich, South East London. The sign points walkers along one of the UK's best-known long-distance footpaths, which follows the River Thames from its source in Gloucestershire to the Thames Barrier in East London.
Behind the sign, partially obscured by spring foliage, are the classical facades of the Old Royal Naval College, part of the Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage Site. The combination of historic architecture, mature trees, and formal iron railings reflects the carefully planned riverside landscape that characterises this part of Greenwich.
The Thames Path is heavily used by walkers, joggers, commuters, and tourists, offering continuous public access along the river and connecting major London landmarks. Signage such as this plays an important role in wayfinding and promoting sustainable, car-free movement through the city.
Photographed in daylight under a clear blue sky with fresh green leaves on the trees, the image is well suited to editorial use covering London walking routes, urban green space, heritage landscapes, sustainable transport, outdoor leisure, and life along the River Thames.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WE1G - This image shows a wide view across the River Thames from Greenwich in South East London, looking toward the O2 Arena at North Greenwich and the modern skyline of Canary Wharf beyond. The distinctive white dome of the O2, originally built as the Millennium Dome, is visible alongside the cluster of high-rise office towers that define London's Docklands financial district.
In the foreground, boats travel along the River Thames, emphasising the river's continued role as a working transport corridor as well as a visual and recreational feature of the city. The movement of vessels contrasts with the static skyline, highlighting different layers of London's urban life.
The scene illustrates the dramatic transformation of East London since the late 20th century, where former docklands and industrial areas have been redeveloped into major commercial, entertainment, and residential districts. Viewed from Greenwich, an area rich in maritime heritage, the modern architecture across the river underscores the city's constant evolution.
Photographed in daylight under a blue sky with scattered clouds, the image is well suited to editorial use covering London cityscapes, urban regeneration, riverside development, transport, travel, and the juxtaposition of historic and contemporary London.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WE87 - This image shows the central courtyard and twin-domed buildings of the Old Royal Naval College at Maritime Greenwich in South East London. The grand baroque architecture forms one of the most recognisable historic ensembles in the capital and sits at the heart of the Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Designed primarily by Sir Christopher Wren and Nicholas Hawksmoor, the Old Royal Naval College was originally built as the Royal Hospital for Seamen in the late 17th century before later serving as the Royal Naval College. Today, the site is preserved as a major cultural and heritage destination, frequently associated with the nearby National Maritime Museum, which lies just beyond the buildings shown.
The symmetrical domes, colonnades, and formal lawns create a strong sense of order and monumentality, while people walking, sitting, and relaxing on the grass highlight the site's role as a public space as well as a historic monument. The open courtyard also frames protected sightlines toward Greenwich Park and the Queen's House, reinforcing the carefully planned urban landscape.
Photographed in daylight under a blue sky with scattered clouds, the image conveys the scale, elegance, and accessibility of one of Britain's most important maritime heritage locations. It is well suited to editorial use covering London history, architecture, UNESCO sites, tourism, education, and Britain's naval and scientific legacy.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PPBK - This image shows a yellow Dogs Trust dog ambulance van parked in a public car park. The vehicle carries prominent Dogs Trust branding and the long-established slogan A dog is for life, which reflects the charity's core message promoting responsible dog ownership and lifelong commitment to pets.
Dog ambulance vans form a vital part of Dogs Trust's operational fleet, providing safe and secure transport for dogs between rescue centres, veterinary facilities, foster placements, and rehoming locations. These vehicles are specially adapted to ensure animal welfare during transit and are used across the UK as part of the charity's rescue and support services.
Dogs Trust is the UK's largest dog welfare charity and plays a major role in dog rehoming, education, and animal protection. The visibility of branded vehicles such as this helps raise public awareness of dog welfare issues while supporting practical, frontline rescue work.
Photographed in overcast, wet conditions, the image offers a realistic, documentary view of everyday charity operations. It is well suited for editorial use covering animal welfare, rescue services, charity logistics, pet ownership responsibility, and the role of voluntary organisations in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J86 - This image shows a branded charity van operated by Street Hearts BG, a UK-based animal welfare organisation focused on dog neutering, rescue, and population control. The vehicle prominently displays the charity's name, logo, and mission statement, along with notices indicating that live animals may be in transit.
Street Hearts BG works to reduce the number of stray and abandoned dogs through neutering programmes and rescue activities, often operating across borders and in partnership with other animal welfare groups. Vehicles like this are essential to the charity's work, enabling the safe transport of animals to veterinary facilities, foster homes, or rescue centres.
The van's clear signage, social media links, and safety notices highlight the professionalisation of modern charitable operations and the importance of public visibility in fundraising and awareness-raising. Parked on a quiet residential street, the vehicle situates animal welfare work within everyday community settings rather than remote or specialist locations.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited to editorial use covering animal welfare, UK charities, rescue logistics, responsible pet ownership, volunteering, and the practical realities of non-profit operations focused on protecting animals.

In January 2022, an episode of BBC One investigative series Disclosure interviewed former employees who say they found it a miserable and uncomfortable experience, and some loyal customers [who] now say they regret investing their savings in BrewDog. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD23P1 - This image shows a pavement A-board sign advertising Scoops dog ice cream from Marshfield Farm. The sign promotes ice cream specifically made for dogs, describing it as a frozen treat that gets tails wagging, and features playful illustrations and bold, hand-painted style lettering.
Dog ice cream products like this have become increasingly popular in the UK as part of the growth in pet-friendly caf??s, tourist destinations, and retail businesses catering to dog owners. Such signage is commonly displayed outside caf??s, ice cream parlours, and seaside or rural businesses where dogs are welcomed.
Marshfield Farm is a well-known UK ice cream producer, and its Scoops range reflects wider trends toward niche, novelty, and animal-friendly food products. The sign combines humour and clear messaging to attract attention from passing dog owners.
The photograph works well for editorial use illustrating pet culture, small business marketing, dog-friendly tourism, and everyday retail creativity in public spaces.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A989TH - Thelwall is unquestionably a village of great antiquity, and was first mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in the early 890s. Most reliable sources claim the name is derived from the Old English 'Thelwael', meaning 'deep pool with a plank' or 'pool with a plank bridge'. Records show that in AD 923 Edward the Elder, son of King Alfred, visited the place and for some time made it his residence with soldiers garrisoned there.
The murder myth
There is a story that the house that subsequently became the Little Manor was built for a general in Oliver Cromwell's New Model army in 1642, but the dates do not add up - in 1642 Cromwell was still an MP and governor of Ely, and wasn't promoted to colonel until 1643 in the new Eastern Association army raised by the Earl of Manchester. He was promoted to Lieutenant-General and second in command of the army in 1644.
The story has it that this general lived at Thelwall Cottage for many happy years, and was romantically involved with his housemaid. One day however he tried to disentangle himself from the relationship, and she murdered him in a fit of rage. Overcome by remorse, she then hanged herself from a tall fir tree in the driveway. Such is the legend, anyway, though closer investigation casts doubt on the veracity of the tale.
The history of the property
For the following account, we are indebted to local historian Michael Taylor, who has given invaluable help in explaining the history of the building. The following information is taken from his book 'No Mean City - A Local History of Thelwall in Cheshire', which can be purchased from the post office in the village. The property which became the Little Manor was originally built for the Percival family, who, it is believed, moved to Thelwall around 1660 from Latchford.

In 2011, BrewDog was described as one of the prime movers behind the campaign which changed the law in 2011 to allow new beer measures in Britain.
2011 also saw the company offered crowdfunding shares totalling ?2 million, the equivalent of 8% of the capital of the company. The shares were sold at ?23.75 and accompanied several benefits such as discounts in their bars and online purchase of their beers, and the opportunity to attend their annual shareholders meeting.
The main brewing moved from Fraserburgh to nearby Ellon in 2012.
In February 2016, BrewDog open-sourced its beer recipes to the public, making them a form of Free Beer.
Private equity firm, TSG Consumer Partners acquired a 22% stake in the company for approximately ?213 million in April 2017.
In February 2018, BrewDog announced that it plans to build a $30 million production brewery and tap room on an 11,000sqm greenfield site in the Metroplex complex at Murrarie, in Brisbane, Australia.
BrewDog's provocative marketing has been a key aspect of its business, and has gained them substantial international coverage.
In 2008, BrewDog were challenged by UK drinks industry watchdog the Portman Group. Portman had claimed BrewDog to be in breach of their Code of Practice for the labeling of the Dead Pony IPA. BrewDog denied these allegations and countered that Portman was impeding the development of smaller brewing companies. In December 2008, after an 8-month long dispute and a preliminary adjudication which had ruled against the company, BrewDog were cleared of all breaches of the Code of Practice and were permitted to continue marketing their brands without making any changes to the packaging.
In protest to their targeting, BrewDog introduced Speedball

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy T3RF3C - The Countryside Code is a set of guidelines designed for use by both the public and land managers across England and Wales. It is titled as a guide for enjoying parks and waterways, coast and countryside. It was established in 2004 as a relaunch of the The Country Code, which existed since the 1930s.
The Countryside Code is managed by Natural England in England and Natural Resources Wales in Wales. Whilst both organisations oversee the Countryside Code, they are each individually responsible for promoting it in their respective country.
The Country Code evolved from the work of various organisations and had several different versions from the 1930s. The most widely accepted version of The Country Code was published in 1981 by the Countryside Commission:
Enjoy the countryside and respect its life and work
Guard against all risk of fire
Fasten all gates
Keep your dogs under close control
Keep to public paths across farmland
Use gates and stiles to cross fences, hedges and walls
Leave livestock, crops and machinery alone
Take your litter home
Help to keep all water clean
Protect wildlife, plants and trees
Take special care on country roads
Make no unnecessary noise
In the 1960s and 70s the Country Code was publicised by several public information films shown in cinemas and on television.
At some point after 1981, the instruction to fasten all gates was replaced with one to instead leave gates as found

see below for more variations) is a market town in east Gloucestershire, England, 80 miles (130 km) west northwest of London. Cirencester lies on the River Churn, a tributary of the River Thames, and is the largest town in the Cotswold District. It is the home of the Royal Agricultural University, the oldest agricultural college in the English-speaking world, founded in 1840. The town's Corinium Museum is well known for its extensive Roman collection. The Roman name for the town was Corinium, which is thought to have been associated with the ancient British tribe of the Dobunni, having the same root word as the River Churn. The earliest known reference to the town was by Ptolemy in AD 150.
The Church of St. John Baptist, Cirencester is renowned for its Perpendicular Gothic porch, fan vaults and merchants' tombs.
The town also has a Roman Catholic Church of St Peter's
the foundation stone was laid on 20 June 1895. Coxwell Street to the north of Market Square is home to the Baptist Church that was founded in 1651 ? making it one of the oldest Baptist churches in England. Its current building was started in 1856.
To the west of the town is Cirencester House, the seat of Earl Bathurst and the site of one of the finest landscape gardens in England, laid out by the first Earl Bathurst after 1714.
Abbey House, Cirencester was a country house built on the site of the former Cirencester Abbey following its dissolution and demolition at the English Reformation in the 1530s. The site was granted in 1564 to Richard Master, physician to Queen Elizabeth I. The house was rebuilt and altered at several dates by the Master family, who still own the agricultural estate. By 1897 the house was let, and it remained in the occupation of tenants until shortly after the Second World War. It was finally demolished in 1964.
On Cotswold Avenue is the site of a Roman amphitheatre.

Nestled in the countryside, yet adjacent to junction 10 of the M56 and the A49 and 3 miles from the M6, The Partridge is the ideal location for exploring Manchester, Liverpool and Chester or as a stopover on your journey from North to South, or East to West.
Originally called Walls Pit House, The Partridge dates back to 1791, borrowing its name from the man who built it, Mr Wall.
At the front of the property lay a large pit, which was caused by the excavation of puddling clay, used to line the wells. The pit, which has long since been filled in, had a variety of uses including potato washing in the summer and ice skating in the winter months.
According to the 1841 census, Walls Pit House was occupied by four unmarried siblings
George, Peter and their sisters Ann and Mary Whitley. By 1880, their nephew Charles Thomas Whitley, an architect and good university friend of Charles Darwin, was a frequent visitor of the property and an inscription by him relating to Darwin, can still be seen on one of the original oak beams in the bar.
More recently, the building was converted into a public house named The Hollow Tree before the latest chapter in the building's history saw it being transformed into a traditional inn, and renamed The Partridge, after its countryside surroundings and the birds that are regularly spotted in the local area.

The firm still operates from its original town centre site, although the original brewery was demolished in 2011, and part of its beer business was sold to Marston's in March 2015. Today, Thwaites still produces beer but it in much smaller quantities as it only sells to its own estate of pubs, inns and hotels. In 1999, the Mitchell brewery in Lancaster closed down, and was bought in part by Thwaites. Lancaster Bomber has since been available from Thwaites public houses after being acquired in the takeover. Lancaster Bomber is now brewed by Marston's, as is Wainwright, the other top-selling Thwaite's beer.
The company has over 270 pubs, mainly in the North of England but reaching from the North Lakes area down to Solihull & Leicestershire. It also has six four-star Hotels & Spas and eight Inns of Characters
The brewery invested heavily in pasteurised keg beers, especially those powered by nitro in the 1990s. However, it is now working to increase the market for its cask beers. Thwaites unveiled a new craft brewery in December 2011 named Crafty Dan

The Kirkyard is operated by City of Edinburgh Council in liaison with a charitable trust, which is linked to but separate from the church. The Kirkyard and its monuments are protected as a category A listed building.
History
Greyfriars takes its name from the Franciscan friary on the site (the friars of which wear grey habits), which was dissolved in 1560. The churchyard was founded in August 1562 after Royal sanction was granted to replace the churchyard at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh. The latter burial ground was not used after around 1600.

The area was revitalized with the opening of the MCU Park in 2001 and several amusement rides in the 2010s. Nathan's Famous, Inc. is an American company that operates a chain of fast food restaurants specializing in hot dogs. The original Nathan's restaurant stands at the corner of Surf and Stillwell Avenues in the Coney Island neighborhood of the Brooklyn borough of New York City, New York. The company's headquarters are at One Jericho Plaza in Jericho, New York, part of Oyster Bay, New York.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PBRY2N - The cultivation of the domesticated grape began 6,000?8,000 years ago in the Near East. Yeast, one of the earliest domesticated microorganisms, occurs naturally on the skins of grapes, leading to the discovery of alcoholic drinks such as wine. The earliest archeological evidence for a dominant position of wine-making in human culture dates from 8,000 years ago in Georgia. The oldest known winery was found in Armenia, dating to around 4000 BC.
By the 9th century AD the city of Shiraz was known to produce some of the finest wines in the Middle East. Thus it has been proposed that Syrah red wine is named after Shiraz, a city in Persia where the grape was used to make Shirazi wine. Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics record the cultivation of purple grapes, and history attests to the ancient Greeks, Phoenicians, and Romans growing purple grapes for both eating and wine production. The growing of grapes would later spread to other regions in Europe, as well as North Africa, and eventually in North America.
In North America, native grapes belonging to various species of the genus Vitis proliferate in the wild across the continent, and were a part of the diet of many Native Americans, but were considered by European colonists to be unsuitable for wine. Vitis vinifera cultivars were imported for that purpose.

Exeter West signal box is not at Exeter - it is at Crewe.
Why is this? Because a group of dedicated individuals saved the signalbox from demolition when the signalling in the Exeter area was renewed in 1985, and carefully dismantled it so it could be re-erected as a working museum demonstrating how the larger signal boxes of the past were.
This box is now viewable at Crewe as part of Crewe Heritage Centre display, and signalmen are present most weekends to describe and demonstrate signalling days of the past and answer questions from visitors.

Black Mountain is a Canadian psychedelic rock-band composed of Stephen McBean, Amber Webber, Matt Camirand, Jeremy Schmidt and Joshua Wells. They have recently really grown on me, particularly this, one of the gentler tracks on the latest album Wilderness Heart.
By day, three members of the band work for Insite, an organization that meets the basic living requirements of the chronically poor, drug addicted and mentally ill in a part of Vancouver.
A BBC review described it thus: 'Black Mountain's third album represents the finest yield so far from the Vancouver band\u2019s relentless harvesting of rock and folk's 70s heyday. Wilderness Heart refuses to dive into unfamiliar territory, instead expertly blending heavy rock, smoky blues and finger-picked acoustic guitars across an album of tantalisingly layered songs. Rather than adhering to type, Black Mountain now have a catalogue of songs that respect and rival their influences.'
I can only agree, having played the album to death now for about 7 weeks. Check it out, tell 'em I sent you :-)

Princess St in the city of Edinburgh can be a magnet for the homeless to pick up a few coins and the odd discarded half eaten sandwich, can of Tenants Super or BK whopper. Jenners is one of the top pitches. Its now owned by house of Fraser. Known as the 'Harrods of the North', it has held a Royal Warrant since 1911, and was visited by Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of its 150th anniversary in 1988. In recent years (2004) it changed its vision statement from its goal to 'be the most exciting department store outside of London' to 'Confidently Independent'.
Its probably no coincidence that this chap has choosen the 'Home, thats our department' window to bed down with his canine companion.
Up at the student run Bedlam Theatre there is a bench that is dedicated to the memory of a student who died a few years ago. The concrete bench is raised about two feet on a wall on the front of the theatre. From there you get a beautiful view all the way up North Bridge, the New College dome in the distance.
Tramps know it as 'the bench'. A central point to meet, watch the world go by, share tips and drinks, but not sheltered to sleep at night. As the colder weather draws in and other budget cuts bite its a harder time than ever in town. Although big cities attract the homeless, facilities are thin on the ground. Increasingly the 'Big Society' is being mentioned to replace trimmed initiatives and increasingly volunteers. This city can afford to waste over \u00a3600 million on trams solving a problem that did not exist, but little on supporting some of the vulnerable.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A9GHTR - Attempting to mislead voters by using polling data to claim electoral advantage over rivals could have long-term implications for trust in politicians, a fact-checking charity has warned.
Leaflets sent to the Guardian from readers around the country show the Liberal Democrats in particular appear to be using bar charts to press home a message that they have a good chance of winning, even in seats where the likes of the Tory Jacob Rees-Mogg or Labour stalwarts are seen as difficult to dislodge.
In some leaflets the party omitted spectacular results for the Brexit party in bar charts showing the European election results, while in others it projected local election results to forecast wins in the general election.
The chief executive of the independent fact-checking charity Full Fact, Will Moy, said dubious use of data would damage the future trust of voters.
Honesty in politics matters, whether it's in a speech or in a leaflet. It's misleading to present a mix of data from different polls and constituency boundaries as an accurate predictor of local results this December, he said. Parliamentary candidates are asking voters for their trust over the next five years. The words of our future MPs shouldn't be undermined by misleading use of graphs or polls.
From Totnes to Wimbledon, Oxford and Warwick, the Liberal Democrats have used phone surveys and local, district and European elections data to try to convince voters of their ability to win.
The muddling of data for electoral advantage was a perennial problem and practised by all parties, including the Tories who recently claimed Labour party plans would cost ?1.2tn, said the psephologist John Curtice.
In 75 constituencies where the Lib Dems came third last time, the European election projections would put them in second place. The Lib Dems always suffer from the potential perception ?we can't possibly win' and that's why they are using the European elections.

The Littlewoods Pools Building, Edge Lane is a real Liverpool landmark.
This art-deco building was the headquarters of the Littlewoods Pools company. In its heyday this building held thousands of workers but since the decline in popularity of 'doing the pools' the listed building now lies empty, possibly awaiting conversion to apartment. Another victim of the national Lottery. The other was Littlewood's bitter rival, Vernons.
A Liverpool Echo Newspaper Article earlier this year, in May 2012 suggested this iconic building could face demolition if a new use for it cannot be found.
'The huge art-deco complex has been empty for more than a decade and several attempts to regenerate it have failed to get off the ground. The council will now meet with the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) to discuss a strategy for a number of sites along Edge Lane.
Sources told the ECHO that the land occupied by the 1930s Littlewoods building, next to Liverpool Innovation Park, will be high on the agenda.
While the HCA said an unnamed developer was keen to put forward proposals, it added there was \u201climited time\u201d to fund the refurbishment of the building and no formal agreement had been reached.
Cllr Malcolm Kennedy, cabinet member for regeneration, today said he wanted to secure a future for the landmark building.
Heritage experts also said it was surprising the building had never been given listed status, but a new use could be found for the site if its most iconic elements could be saved.'
Cllr Kennedy said: \u201cWe are looking at all sites up the Edge Lane corridor, including the innovation park, and there will be a concentrated effort between the two organisations.
\u201cThe Littlewoods building is not listed, although there have been attempts to do so.
\u201cWe would want to keep it because it is quite an iconic building \u2013 a Liverpool landmark. But it is going to be a struggle because the building is deteriorating quickly.\u201d

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JN6ECW - A new criminal offence to tackle dognapping and crack down on the heart-breaking issue of pet theft has moved a step closer.
Under government plans, people who steal a canine companion could face up to five years in jail if convicted of dog abduction.
The offence is being added to the Kept Animals Bill, which is currently making its way through the Commons, after a recommendation by the government's pet theft taskforce in September.
The taskforce, launched in May, looked into a reported rise in pet thefts during the pandemic. More than 2,000 such incidents were reported to the police in 2020.
Dognapping remains the biggest issue, with around seven in 10 incidents of pet theft recorded by police involving dogs, according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
The move has been welcomed by leaders from animal rights organisations.
Chief veterinary officer Dr Christine Middlemiss said it is an important step forward with dogs being treated as sentient beings rather than merely property.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFP0GA - Fontaines D.C. are a post-punk rock band from Dublin, Ireland. The band released their debut studio album, Dogrel, on April 12, 2019. Winners of Album of the Year 2019 from both Rough Trade and BBC 6Music.
Carlos O'Connell, Conor Curley, Conor Deegan, Grian Chatten, and Tom Coll met in Dublin while attending music college at British and Irish Modern Music Institute in Liberties, Dublin. They bonded over a common love of poetry and collectively released two collections of poetry, one called Vroom, inspired by the Beat poets (Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg) and another called Winding, inspired by Irish poets (Patrick Kavanagh, James Joyce, W. B. Yeats). None of the published poems were translated into songs, but the track Television Screens off their debut Dogrel started out as a poem and was turned into a song.
Lead singer Grian Chatten is half-British (his mother is English and his father is Irish) and was born in Barrow-in-Furness, England but grew up in the County Dublin town of Skerries, Dublin.[10] Coll, Curley, and Deegan are from Ireland ? Mayo, County Mayo, Emyvale in County Monaghan, and Mayo, County Mayo, respectively, and O'Connell grew up in Madrid, Spain.
The band got their name from a character in the movie The Godfather called Johnny Fontane, a singer and movie star portrayed by Al Martino. Fontane was godson of Vito Corleone. They added the initials D.C. when a band in Los Angeles had the same name. The initials D.C. stand for Dublin City.
Fontaines started out self-releasing singles. In May 2017, Fontaines released the single Liberty Belle followed by the split Hurricane Laughter / Winter In the Sun. Liberty Belle is in homage to the Liberties, a neighborhood in Dublin where many band members lived.
