This has prompted Virgin, which earlier this year was given an extension of its franchise on the West Coast Main Line, to act.
When lavatories get blocked it means trains have to be taken out of service, a spokesman said.
It is also a huge inconvenience to passengers especially on a long trip.
We wanted to do something which would grab people's attention and a talking toilet does get the message across.
They are being well received, but time will tell. We're trying to face a serious issue in a chummy, informal way.
The initiative was welcomed by Antony Smith, chief executive of the consumer watchdog, Passenger Focus.
It can be frustrating to find that toilets are out of order or blocked, so hopefully the announcements will help this happen less.

The company, which has recently started supplying frozen meals to the Asda supermarket chain, also has a number of other branches including one in High Street, Wanstead.
Ms Robins added: When we informed our customers we would be shutting they just kept asking why.
I don't think pie and mash is dying out as we have a lot of demand in other areas including at weddings and football games, including West Ham United.
But times are changing and people seem to want universal food such as pizza and burgers. Pie and mash has a limited regional appeal.
Traditionally pie and mash dates back to the 19th century, when Dutch ships delivered live eels, which were used in pies, to Billingsgate Market.
Customer, Paul Scott, of Sandhurst Drive, Goodmayes, added: This is a great shame and customers aren't happy about it especially as there will now be no more pie and mash shops in Ilford.

There Beauty is trained as a slave and a plaything. In this palace they spend several years learning to become obedient and submissive sexual property, accepting being spanked, being publicly displayed, crawling around on their hands and knees, servicing their masters and mistresses, until they return to their own lands 'being enhanced in wisdom'.
In the palace Beauty meets another slave, Prince Alexi, with whom she copulates passionately. After that he tells her the long adventurous journey he had in the palace. Alexi previously had been a stubborn prince who fought back all the attempts to break him, until the Queen sent him to the kitchen to get him tortured by crude kitchen servants.
The punishment Alexi received there was so savage and merciless he began to lose his senses and, after some particularly humiliating training at the hands of a strong stable boy, Alexi became a totally surrendered slave, playing various sexual games at the Queen's commands.
The moral of Alexi's story notwithstanding, Beauty fails to become an obedient plaything, and the book closes with her being sentenced to brutal slavery in the neighboring village along with other failed slaves.
So the moral of all this: 'Dont waste your life waiting for your prince to come'.

The Lady of the Lake is the name of several related characters in the different legends and interpretations. The Scotsman Walter Scott transported the legend to Loch Katrine, near Callander in central Scotland. In more recent times she appears as a character in the Spamalot musical and on Richie Blackmore's Rainbow 'Long Live Rock and Roll' album from the late 1970's.

It is situated on the north bank of the River Mersey between the towns of Widnes and Warrington. Opened in 1971, the station has a generating capacity of 1,989 megawatts (MW). In a bid to combine efforts at the design and construction stages the Boiler and Turbo-generator plant were replicated at West Burton power station located between Retford and Gainsborough in North Nottinghamshire.
Since the privatisation of the Central Electricity Generating Board in 1990, the station has been operated by various companies. Since 2004, Scottish and Southern Energy plc have operated the station.
With its eight 114-metre (374 ft) high cooling towers and 200-metre (660 ft) high chimney the station is a prominent landmark and can be seen from as far away as the Peak District and the Pennines.

In an internal combustion engine, the expansion of the high-temperature and high-pressure gases produced by combustion applies direct force to some component of the engine. The force is applied typically to pistons, turbine blades, rotor or a nozzle. This force moves the component over a distance, transforming chemical energy into useful mechanical energy.
The first commercially successful internal combustion engine was created by Étienne Lenoir around 1859[1] and the first modern internal combustion engine was created in 1876 by Nikolaus Otto (see Otto engine).
The term internal combustion engine usually refers to an engine in which combustion is intermittent, such as the more familiar four-stroke and two-stroke piston engines, along with variants, such as the six-stroke piston engine and the Wankel rotary engine. A second class of internal combustion engines use continuous combustion: gas turbines, jet engines and most rocket engines, each of which are internal combustion engines on the same principle as previously described. In contrast, in external combustion engines, such as steam or Stirling engines, energy is delivered to a working fluid not consisting of, mixed with, or contaminated by combustion products. Working fluids can be air, hot water, pressurized water or even liquid sodium, heated in a boiler. ICEs are usually powered by energy-dense fuels such as gasoline or diesel fuel, liquids derived from fossil fuels. While there are many stationary applications, most ICEs are used in mobile applications and are the dominant power supply for vehicles such as cars, aircraft, and boats.

During November 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced the InterCity West Coast franchise would be replaced by the West Coast Partnership (WCP). In August 2019, the DfT awarded the WCP franchise to the First Trenitalia consortium. On 8 December 2019, Avanti West Coast took over operations from the prior operating company Virgin Trains, which had run the franchise since 1997. Originally, the franchise was initially scheduled to run until March 2030, and had also been set to operate the initial High Speed 2 services from 2026. However, during December 2020, it was announced that First Trenitalia and the DfT had agreed to terminate the WCP franchise at the earlier date of 31 March 2026 as part of the abolition of the franchise system. Since then a number of contract changes have taken place due to COVID-19 and then poor performance by the company. As of March 2023, the company's contract will expire in October 2023.
Between 14 August and 18 September 2022, Avanti West Coast reduced its timetable, citing unofficial strike action from its employees. However, this allegation was disputed by Aslef, which accused the company of lying and blamed their lack of recruitment, especially of train drivers, for the problems. Trains were running at one service per hour on the majority of routes, as opposed to the three which would typically occur on the London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly route. The Rail Vehicle Accessibility Regulations require that all public passenger trains must be accessible to disabled people by 2020. Only one Pacer (the modernised 144e) currently meets this requirement, and the remainder will therefore need to be withdrawn by that date unless they receive an extensive refurbishment. Porterbrook, which owns the Class 143 and Class 144 fleets, has proposed such a refurbishment for the rest of the fleet, while Angel Trains, which owns the Class 142 fleet, does not see such a refurbishment as a viable option
