Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K6GW3J - Angus Steakhouse is a restaurant chain of steak houses in central London. In 2001, there were about 30 outlets
five remain open as of July 2020. The name reflects Aberdeen Angus, a common breed of beef cattle. Some restaurants still retain the former trading name, Aberdeen Steak Houses, on their signage, as of September 2016.
Aberdeen Steak Houses was started in the early 1960s by Reginald Eastwood (born c.1913), who had started in business aged 15 as an apprentice butcher.[citation needed] Eastwood's vision was for a more modern version of the earlier chop-house grills, and was influenced by American steak houses. The décor was opulent, with plate glass windows and red velour banquettes. Menus included trendy dishes like prawn cocktail and Black Forest gateau
By the 1970s, the group was focused more on tourist trade, with many branches in the West End to attract those attending theatre or musical shows
In 1984, the group was sold to Ali Salih, a Turkish businessman with a low public profile. The menu and décor showed little update since the 1960s, and the brand got a reputation as tourist traps for Its business, along with the wider UK beef industry, was hit in the 1990s by bovine spongiform encephalopathy,(BSE) then by foot and mouth disease in 2001.It made a loss of £3m in 2000
decline in American tourists after the September 11 attacks was also cited by Salih after the group went into receivership in October 2002, with £7m in debt.
In 2011, actor and comedian David Mitchell championed the cause of Aberdeen Angus Steak Houses in his opinion column in The Guardian, proposing that they be a nominee for a British World Heritage bid, citing them as being unique to British culture because of their proud heritage of serving shoe leather with Béarnaise sauce to neon-addled out-of-towners

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JY56R8 - Crewe Market enjoys a rich history dating back to 1854, when The Cheese Hall was erected, housing over 2,000 tonnes of Cheshire cheese. A Corn Exchange and warehouse were built next door for butter and bacon, and over time the market cemented itself as a vibrant general market for Crewe.
Markets have been continually evolving for centuries, and the early 2000's saw the rise of online shopping, supermarkets and discount stores creating challenges for Crewe's General Market.
The Market Hall building needed investment to make it suitable for 21st-century shopping habits, in order to support a wide community of small businesses.
Crewe market has recently undergone major redevelopment works to breathe fresh life into this historic building. The historic Shambles units have been sympathetically restored, using heritage colours and materials to celebrate the market's history, while making it fit for an exciting future.
In May 2021, Crewe Market reopened, home to an exciting selection of independent businesses offering street food, fresh food and retail goods.
Crewe Market traders are local to the Crewe area, and represent the high standards of quality, customer service and passion that make small businesses the backbone of our town centres. Find out more about our traders here.
The Market Hall is now a mixed-use destination venue, offering customers the chance to shop, eat, drink, rest and play, with a weekly programme of family-friendly entertainment, and a regular schedule of pop-up and speciality markets, community events and family activities.

Head in at any hour and youíll see someone in a rumpled suit, waistcoat and trilby propping up the bar. With one difference: the figure has been dead for 43 years. It's artist LS Lowry, Samís most famous patron, immortalised in brass. A regular for many years, he often gave staff his drawings.

The revival of the Altrincham Market is nothing short of remarkable. From 1290 (yes, 1290!) the market had been at the centre of community life in Altrincham. Throughout the centuries, the market would have been where townsfolk gathered to buy goods, make a living, and spend time in the company of their neighbours.
And yet, the second half of the 20th century brought a period of stagnation. With the fortunes of the town on the downturn and the population size decreasing year over year, the historic market was being run by the council with little love or care. In fact, around a decade ago, Altrincham was voted as having the worse high street in Britain.
So, what has changed?
Well, Nick Johnson came onto the scene. Nick was a property developer and saw something in Altrincham that others failed to spot. In 2013, he won the contract to run the market and quickly set about changing the face of it and in turn Altrincham.
Nick gave the Victorian building a makeover. Cleaning it from top to bottom and restoring some features that had been neglected. He then got to work contacting some of the area's best, local food vendors.
Nick did the same in Manchester city centre with the Mackie Mayor food hall, the big sister of Altrincham Market House. We previously wrote about Mackie Mayor here.
Food And Drink At Altrincham Market House
Since it reopened in 2014, locals and visitors have filled the food hall week after week, and it should come as no surprise the food on offer is second to none!
Market House is home to 10 indie food stalls, including Honest Crust, Wolfhouse Kitchen, Tender Cow, Jack in the Box, Reserve Wines, Great North Pie Co., Sam Joseph, and Market House Coffee.
Jack in the Box is an award-winning producer of real ale and cider that operate across the Mackie Mayor and Altrincham

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNRN - Little Chef had a spin-off brand called Little Chef Express which Forte developed in 1995 as a rival to fast food outlets. The first Express outlet was at the Markham Moor service station (A1 North), though only as an addition to the existing Little Chef menu there. However, only five restaurants were ever built on the roadside, and the idea was re-developed when Little Chef was taken over by Compass, with the Express take outs being set up in food courts, including one in the Eurostar terminal
Little Chef was a chain of restaurants in the United Kingdom, founded in 1958 by entrepreneur Sam Alper, who was inspired by American diners. The chain was famous for the Olympic Breakfast its version of a full English as well as its Early Starter and Jubilee Pancakes. The restaurants were mostly located on the roadside near A roads, often paired with a Travelodge motel, a Burger King and a petrol station. The chain was also located along motorways in Moto Services, for a time.
The chain expanded rapidly throughout the 1970s, and its parent company would acquire the Happy Eater chain in the 1980s, its only major roadside competitor. When its owners converted all Happy Eater restaurants to Little Chef in the late 1990s, this allowed it to peak in scale with 439 restaurants. Little Chef began to face decline in the early 2000s, this mainly due to the chain expanding too fast, meaning it could not properly invest in all of its locations. Compared to its peak in the late 1990s, by 2005 the chain had lost almost half of its locations.
In 2007, the chain entered administration, marking 41 out of 239 restaurants to close. This was followed by another closure programme in 2012 to reduce the chain to 94 restaurants. In early 2017, licence owners Kout Food Group sold the remaining 70 locations to Euro Garages, who would convert the restaurants into their partner franchises such as Starbucks, Subway and Greggs.
