Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X2CG2C - Interior signage advertising nail bar and beauty services inside Jenners department store on Princes Street in Edinburgh, Scotland. The display promotes manicure and beauty treatments associated with the store's Regis Spa offering and is set against the distinctive interior finishes of one of Scotland's most famous retail landmarks.
Jenners, founded in 1838, has long been regarded as Edinburgh's premier department store and a key feature of Princes Street, the city's principal shopping thoroughfare. Often referred to historically as the Harrods of the North, the store has played a central role in Edinburgh's retail and social life for generations.
Beauty services such as nail bars and spas reflect the evolution of traditional department stores, adapting to changing consumer habits by combining retail with experiential services. The image captures this blend of historic retail heritage and contemporary beauty culture within a city-centre shopping environment.
This photograph is suitable for editorial use illustrating department store interiors, beauty and wellness retail, Edinburgh shopping, changing high street models, luxury retail environments, and the modernisation of historic retail institutions in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ3D6 - The exterior of the former James Howell & Co department store on St Mary Street in Cardiff city centre, photographed in daylight under bright but overcast conditions. The building retains its original carved stone signage reading James Howell & Co above the main entrance, a clear surviving marker of its long retail history.
James Howell & Co was one of Wales's best-known independent department stores, trading from this site for over 150 years and forming a cornerstone of Cardiff's traditional shopping district. The architecture reflects early twentieth-century department store design, with a symmetrical fa??ade, tall pilasters and large display windows intended to convey stability, quality and civic pride.
Visible within the shopfront windows are contemporary panels and graphics referencing a New Era, indicating redevelopment and reuse following the store's closure. This juxtaposition of historic branding and modern regeneration messaging highlights the broader transformation of British high streets, where long-established department stores have struggled amid changing consumer behaviour, online retail and shifting urban economics.
The image captures a moment of transition in Cardiff's retail landscape, where heritage commercial buildings are being reconsidered for new purposes. It is well suited for editorial use covering high-street decline, retail regeneration, Welsh urban history, department store culture, and the changing identity of city-centre shopping streets in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2REGHTY - This image shows an empty former department store on Witton Street in Northwich town centre, Cheshire. The large retail unit is currently vacant, with its ground-floor windows boarded and covered with colourful temporary panels, while the upper floors sit unused above. Decorative bunting is strung across the street, creating a visual contrast between civic efforts to maintain vibrancy and the reality of retail vacancy.
The building features a mock Tudor black-and-white timbered facade, a style commonly found on prominent town-centre department stores built or remodelled in the early to mid-twentieth century. Despite its architectural presence, the premises show no active retail use, highlighting the challenges faced by large-format stores in smaller UK towns.
The photograph was taken in daylight under clear blue skies, with the pedestrianised street empty of shoppers, reinforcing the sense of quietness and underuse. Empty department stores like this have become increasingly common across the UK, reflecting long-term changes in consumer behaviour, the decline of traditional department store chains, and the shift toward online retail.
The image documents a familiar aspect of contemporary British high streets, where historic retail buildings await repurposing as part of wider town-centre regeneration strategies.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP331 - A close view of the exterior signage of the former Dixons department store on Church Street in Coleraine, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The raised lettering reading Dixons of Coleraine is mounted against a light stone facade, marking the location of a once well-known town centre department store.
Dixons was part of Coleraine's traditional high street retail landscape, reflecting a period when independent or regionally recognised department stores formed the commercial backbone of Northern Irish towns. The remaining signage provides a visual trace of that era, even after the store itself has ceased trading.
Photographed in natural daylight, the image documents retail change and decline in town centres, capturing how historic shop names and architectural details persist as reminders of past commercial activity. It is suitable for illustrating themes of high street transformation, retail heritage, and the shifting nature of local economies across the UK and Ireland. Like many provincial department stores, it was built on personal service, loyal custom and a business model that depended on steady footfall and long-term relationships rather than rapid turnover. Its decline was not the result of a single misstep, but of sustained structural change: increasing competition from national chains, the rise of out-of-town retail parks, falling town-centre footfall, rising operating costs, and later the disruptive impact of online shopping. For the owning family, these pressures were compounded by the realities of succession. Continuing the business would have required significant reinvestment, longer working hours, and acceptance of growing financial risk in a sector with diminishing returns. As with many family-run retailers, the next generation faced different career opportunities and life choices, and the balance between personal risk and reward no longer stacked up. The closure of Dixons therefore reflects not just economic decline, but the human limits

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP339 - The exterior of Moores department store in Coleraine town centre, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The prominent corner building features the name Moores displayed high on the facade, marking one of the town's best-known independent retailers, established in Coleraine in 1925.
The store occupies a large, traditional town centre premises with period architectural detailing, wide display windows, and a curved corner frontage that makes it a recognisable local landmark. Pedestrians pass along the shopping street, with hanging flower baskets and street lighting contributing to the everyday commercial atmosphere of the town centre.
Photographed in natural daylight, the image documents the continuing presence of long-established independent retail in Northern Ireland towns, at a time when many traditional department stores have disappeared from the high street. It provides a visual record of Coleraine's retail heritage and the role such businesses play in sustaining town centre identity, employment, and local economic life. Moores was established during the inter-war period, a time when Coleraine was a growing commercial hub for the north-west of Ulster. Like many provincial department stores of the era, Moores developed as a locally owned, family-run business, serving both the town and its rural hinterland.
Its business model followed the classic early 20th-century department store format:
clothing and footwear
household goods
fabrics and haberdashery
This positioned Moores as a practical, aspirational retailer for everyday life rather than a luxury outlet.
Post-war expansion and consolidation (1950s?1970s)
After the Second World War, Moores expanded alongside changing consumer expectations. During this period:
department stores became central to town-centre life
shopping shifted from necessity to experience
window displays, seasonal ranges, and fashion departments grew in importance

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP348 - A wide riverside view of the Dunnes Stores retail complex at the Waterside in Coleraine, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, positioned directly alongside the River Bann. The modern department store building features a combination of light stone cladding and large glazed sections, reflecting contemporary retail architecture associated with large Irish-owned retail chains.
The store forms a prominent part of Coleraine's waterside commercial area, with car parking and pedestrian access integrated along the river frontage. Dunnes Stores is a well-established retailer across Ireland and the UK, combining grocery, clothing, and household goods under one brand, and this location serves as a major shopping destination for Coleraine and the surrounding Causeway Coast region.
Photographed in natural daylight with the river in the foreground, the image documents modern retail development in a Northern Irish town, illustrating the shift towards larger out-of-town or edge-of-centre retail environments and their relationship with urban regeneration and waterfront landscapes. The scene highlights everyday consumer activity and the economic role of large retail anchors within regional town centres.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD738P - Dunnes Stores is an Irish multinational retail chain that primarily sells food, clothes and household wares. It was founded by Ben Dunne in 1944. In addition to its main customer base in Ireland, the chain also has operations in Spain, and formerly in England and Scotland. The format of most of the chain's stores in Ireland involves a grocery supermarket operating alongside a clothing/textiles store, although some stores contain only textiles and some contain only a supermarket. The grocery side of the business does not operate outside of Ireland, save for a limited grocery range in the Spanish stores. The larger stores usually contain a caf?? branded as either Caf?? Sol, Dunnes Stores Caf?? or Baxter & Greene Market Caf??.
Dunnes Stores' original own brand of groceries was sold under the St Bernard brand introduced in 1956, becoming an Irish household name, but was rebranded as My Family Favourites in 2013.
The main domestic competitors in the supermarket business are Tesco, SuperValu, Lidl and Aldi. For many years, Dunnes Stores has maintained a top-three market share in Ireland's grocery market, alongside SuperValu and Tesco. Combined, these three supermarket chains account for approximately 70% of Ireland's grocery market.
In clothing, their rivals include Penneys and Marks and Spencer. Dunnes collaborate for many clothing/home wares collections from a number of Irish designers such as Paul Costelloe, Padraic Harrington, Carolyn Donnelly, Lennon Courtney and new clothing from Paul Galvin. They also sell in-house clothings brands such as Savida and Gallery, along with their own Dunnes Stores brand of clothing.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PH9M0F - In 1883 Robert Clare Baxter was born. He was a remarkable businessman who was behind the huge success of Clare's Department Store. Robert Clare Baxter was born into a poor family in Runcorn and started off working in a drapers at the weekend. He was later promoted to buyer and manager and the owner then helped him set up his own business.
In the early 20th century Clare's premises were occupied by Arthurs Pioneer Stores. Arthurs was taken over by WS Williams of Llanrwst who also owned the Loyal Store on the opposite side of Mostyn St. One of the shops 'main features was the variety of serge's and tweeds spun at Williams own factory in Dolgellau. These could be made up into whatever the customer required ? particulary boating, cycling and touring outfits for the ladies.
Clare's Department Store was established in 1927 by the Baxter family. Quickly built a reputation within the community for offering good, friendly reliable service to all their customers. Robert Clare Baxter rebuilt it as the present Clare's Department Store. It became a ladies dressmakers and milliners allowing customers to have access to a respectable fashion store.
When Robert Baxter died, the business was taken over by his son Dougie and grandchildren John and Ann. The business was passed down and continued to operate as a family business. It remained successful and was continually growing and thriving.
Clare's Department Store was acquired by Ulster Stores in 2002. It was instantly recognised as an exciting opportunity for the future. The store is a well known destination not only for local shoppers but also for the many tourists who visit Llandudno. When Ulster Stores took over the Lamson Pneumatic Device was removed. This whizzed payment by tubes to the cash office and sent back the change. You can still see the original office windows at the back of the GF.
Clares has changed over the years and moved with the times and customers.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MGPDP7 - Blacklers was a large department store on the corner of Elliot Street and Great Charlotte Street in Liverpool, England. The store was famous for its lavish Christmas grotto and its rocking horse, Blackie, which is now on display in the Museum of Liverpool. The store, which at its peak employed a thousand people, also has connections to The Beatles: George Harrison worked as an apprentice electrician at Blacklers in 1959, and Pete Best's mother Mona bought his drum kit from the Blacklers music department.
Blacklers was founded by partners Richard John Blackler and A.B. Wallis in the early twentieth century. Blackler died in 1919 and was succeeded as a partner in the business by his wife Margaret.
Despite the building being severely damaged in The Blitz of May 1941 during World War II, the business survived. Temporary outlets were created in Bold Street and Church Street and the first part of the new store opened on 29 March 1953.
Margaret Blackler died in 1957 without children, at which point the store became the property of several individuals, of which the major shareholder was the sportswoman Vera Kingston (Margaret's god-daughter). In 1983 following Vera's death the store was sold on once again, and all links to the original owners disappeared. The store remained open only a few years more, closing in April 1988.
The site now includes a Wetherspoons chain pub, named Richard John Blackler in honour of the store's founder.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JN5MT8 - Browns was a department store in Chester established in 1780 by Susannah Brown. The store traded from its site on Chester's Eastgate Street from 1791 until 2021. Once regarded as the Harrods of the North, the building interior contains many ornate features such as glass-domed roofs and elaborate plasterwork surrounding small chandeliers in the main entrance area. Some of the glass roof on the second floor has been concealed as it has been covered by the construction of the third-floor extension which contained the main caf?? and Kalmora Spa.
The oldest part of the store is housed in the Grade I listed Crypt Chambers, designed by T. M. Penson incorporating Georgian, Tudor and Gothic facades. Construction was completed in 1858. The building incorporates part of the Chester Rows. On the front of the tower at Row level is a blank scroll, on the east face is a recessed panel containing the initials W. B. (for William Brown), on the west face the initials are C. B. (for Charles Brown) and on the rear face is a scroll inscribed AD 1858: Crypt Chambers. The Gothic facade frontage is built over a medieval undercroft dating from the twelfth century. The undercroft most recently contained 'The Tea Press' tea room.
Another extension to the building was completed in 1965 to link Browns to the nearby Grosvenor shopping centre. A new three-story extension was built in 2002 on the site formerly occupied by the offices of the Chester Chronicle.
It was acquired by Debenhams in 1976. Browns was the only store in the group to retain its own trading name alongside the standard 'Debenhams' branding. Debenhams entered liquidation in early 2021 and all remaining stores closed during May that year. The building is owned by British Land

shops, which was formerly the Stroud Co-op department store. Once inside the front door,
customers would walk up through the different departments. The main double door is now
replaced by the separate doors into the Black Book caf?? and the launderette, with a
narrow blank panel in between. The windows up both Nelson St and Parliament St have
the original lights and pull-down awnings (still working).
The square, Art Deco, rendered panel (?1931') is as it was originally. The signage (Soap &

Unit 6, originally the butcher's department of the Co-op and now a tattoo parlour ? has a
set-back doorway (the others in the block flush) but no awning like the others. At the back
of the shop are the original butcher's rails. The plate glass is the original Co-op shop

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHW8DG - David Lewis founded a small shop selling men's and boy's clothing in 1856. The sale of women's clothes began in 1864, and by the 1870s Lewis's Department Store was in full swing. There were sections for shoes and tobacco in addition to clothing.
Branches were opened in other cities, beginning with Manchester in 1877. Birmingham, Sheffield and Leicester followed soon after.
The building burnt down in the infamous fire of 1886, and was heavily bombed by the Luftwaffe during the Second World War. Nevertheless, it was rebuilt each time, and was refurbished in 1957. This version included the statue ?Liverpool Resurgent', symbolising the city's renewed vigour following the horrors of the recent conflict.
Lewis's Department Store ? the fifth floor
The fifth floor of Lewis's has taken on an almost mythical status. In the store's heyday, the 1950s, the fifth floor was the place to dine in the self-service cafeteria or the Red Rose restaurant. You could also get your hair done in the salon.
A large mural decorated the walls, but this and the other features were hidden from the public in the 1980s. The floor was closed, and remained so until 2010 when it became the focus of an exhibition at the National Conservation Centre.
Gerald de Courcy Fraser designed the building in 1947 while, Fraser, Sons and Geary carried out construction. It is built from a steel frame with a Portland stone fa??ade.
There are several classical influences in the building. Red granite columns are topped with Ionic capitals, while the columns on the fourth floor are Tuscan in style. A two-storey colonnade above the corner entrance have Doric-style half columns.
Liverpool Resurgent
The statue Liverpool Resurgent is accompanied by relief panels depicting scenes of childhood. The figures in the panels are modelled on the sculptor Jacob Epstein's own children and grandchildren. These represent the younger generation which Liverpool was being rebuilt for.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BC397X - British Home Stores, commonly abbreviated to BHS and latterly legally styled BHS Ltd, was a British department store chain, primarily selling clothing and household items. In its later years, the company began to expand into furniture, electronics, entertainment, convenience groceries and fragrance and beauty products.
The company was founded in 1928 by a group of U.S. entrepreneurs, and had a total of 163 stores mainly located in high streets or shopping centres by the time of its closure in 2016, as well as 74 international stores across 18 separate territories.
BHS was previously a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index, but was bought by Sir Philip Green in 2000 and taken private. The company became part of Green's Arcadia Group in 2009. Following a number of loss-making years, the company was sold to the consortium Retail Acquisitions Ltd led by the serial bankrupt Dominic Chappell, in March 2015 for the nominal price of ?1.
In April 2016, 13 months after the purchase by Retail Acquisitions, the company entered administration following unsuccessful attempts to continue trading. It was eventually wound down, and all stores were closed by late August 2016 following failed attempts to find a buyer. The overseas franchises and digital business were sold during the administration period to Al Mana Group, who closed down the website in June 2018

SELF-made Manchester mosaicist Mark Kennedy has had seven mosaic art pieces installed on Tib Street along the wall of Affleck's Palace. The colourful and cracked pieces feature the likes of Eric Cantona, Colin Bell, Karl Marx, Morrissey, Ian Brown, Emmeline Pankhurst, Bet Lynch and many other 'legends' associated with Manchester.
In total Kennedy has spent almost 20 years crafting the two sets of mosaics amongst other on-going work. The theme on Affleck's is Manchester heroes, with a nod given the shopping bazaar's rock'n'roll past. Thus among the great figures of Manchester depicted there are musicians, actors, media and radical politicians.
He also couldn't help including something from his own Manchester memories of Tib Street.
When I was a little kid I used to go to Tib Street all the time to get my ferrets and buy mice from a little pet shop and that's where we all used to go. Next door was Tib Street Joke Shop that used to sell masks and stink bombs so there's one piece that represents all that.
You have to have a closer look at some of the new mosaics to fully appreciate them with some of them holding a few hidden surprises. Kennedy's take on Joy Division's classic Unknown Pleasures album cover features several tiny coloured tile fragments to set it apart from the now iconic original.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GJ79A5 - Afflecks (formerly Affleck's Palace) is an indoor market in Manchester, England, in the city's Northern Quarter on the junction of Church Street/Tib Street and Dale Street with Oldham Street. Dozens of independent stalls, small shops and boutiques operate in the one building. The building was once occupied by a department store called Affleck and Brown as a store and office space, hence the name.
Affleck's Palace first opened in 1981 by James and Elaine Walsh with an ethos of offering a safe environment for entrepreneurs to start out with affordable rent and no long term contracts. Unit holders operated under a licence agreement which allowed them to pay for space on a week by week basis. The atmosphere and colourful maze-like layout led to Affleck's becoming a mecca for alternative culture. The establishment was able to bounce back from two building fires and overcame many obstacles.
During the 1990s 'Madchester Summer of Love' period ? when local bands like the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and Inspiral Carpets were at the height of their popularity
Affleck's Palace was a fashionable spot to get oversized flared jeans and tie dyed T-shirts and 'Eastern Bloc' was a popular record shop as it dealt in all the latest underground dance tunes of the time.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7DE1M - Kingston upon Thames, also known as Kingston, is the principal settlement of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames in southwest London. It was the ancient market town where Saxon kings were crowned. Kingston is situated 10 miles (16.1 km) southwest of Charing Cross and is one of the major metropolitan centres identified in the London Plan.
Kingston lies approximately 10 metres (33 ft) above sea level. Kingston was part of a large ancient parish in the county of Surrey and the town was an ancient borough, reformed in 1835. It has been the location of Surrey County Hall from 1893, extraterritorially in terms of local government administration since Kingston became part of Greater London in 1965. Most of the town centre is part of the KT1 postcode area, but some areas north of Kingston railway station have the postcode KT2 instead. The population of the town itself, comprising the four wards of Canbury, Grove, Norbiton and Tudor, was 43,013 in the 2011 census

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG39CJ - The St. Enoch Centre is a shopping mall located in the central area of Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland. The Architects were the GMW Architects. The construction, undertaken by Sir Robert McAlpine, began in 1986, and the building was opened to the public in May 1989. It was officially opened by the then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, in February of the following year.
Located on the site of the former St Enoch Station, the building is just off Glasgow's famous shopping thoroughfare, Argyle Street and overlooks the historic St. Enoch Square and the original Subway station building (on the right of the photograph). The present St Enoch subway station is now accessible by escalators.
Whilst the target of many architectural critics, the building is notable for its massive glass roof, which makes it the largest glass-covered enclosed area in Europe. Not only does this substantially reduce heating and lighting loads - the mall area is lit entirely by natural daylight in summer, whilst the solar heat generated by the roof means that mechanical heating is only required for a week on average per year - it also earned the building its affectionate nickname The Glasgow Greenhouse. The roof's steel framework was fabricated by the shipbuilders Scott Lithgow.
The glass roofed element surrounds a seven storey car park, and when originally opened, an ice rink. This was closed in 1999 when a refurbishment programme (initiated to compete with the newer Buchanan Galleries), saw it being replaced by more shops and an enlarged restaurant area.

A supermarket, a form of grocery store, is a self-service store offering a wide variety of food and household merchandise, organized into departments. It is larger in size and has a wider selection than a traditional grocery store, also selling items typically found in a convenience store, but is smaller and more limited in the range of merchandise than a hypermarket or big-box store.
The supermarket typically comprises meat, fresh produce, dairy, and baked goods departments, along with shelf space reserved for canned and packaged goods as well as for various non-food items such as household cleaners, pharmacy products and pet supplies. Most supermarkets also sell a variety of other household products that are consumed regularly, such as alcohol (where permitted), medicine, and clothes, and some stores sell a much wider range of non-food products.
The traditional suburban supermarket occupies a large amount of floor space, usually on a single level. It is usually situated near a residential area in order to be convenient to consumers. Its basic appeal is the availability of a broad selection of goods under a single roof, at relatively low prices. Other advantages include ease of parking and frequently the convenience of shopping hours that extend far into the evening or even 24 hours a day. Supermarkets usually allocate large budgets to advertising, typically through newspapers. They also present elaborate in-store displays of products. The stores are usually part of corporate chains that own or control (sometimes by franchise) other supermarkets located nearby?even transnationally?thus increasing opportunities for economies of scale.
Supermarkets typically are supplied by the distribution centres of their parent companies, usually in the largest city in the province.

Jenners Department Store, now known simply as Jenners, is a department store located in Edinburgh, Scotland, and was the oldest independent department store in Scotland until its acquisition by House of Fraser in 2005.
Jenners has maintained its position on Edinburgh's Princes Street since 1838 when it was founded by Charles Jenner and Charles Kennington and known as Kennington & Jenner. The store was run for many years by the Douglas-Miller family, who were descendants of James Kennedy, who took charge of Jenners in 1881.
The original buildings that formed the department store were destroyed by fire in 1892, and in 1893 the Scottish architect William Hamilton Beattie was appointed to design the new store which subsequently opened in 1895. This new building is designated as a category A listed building, and it is noted by the statutory listing that, at Charles Jenner's insistence, the building's caryatids were intended 'to show symbolically that women are the support of the house'. The new store included many technical innovations such as electric lighting and hydraulic lifts

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P4JW19 - Lewis's was a chain of British department stores that operated from 1856 to 2010. The owners of Lewis's have gone into administration many times over the years, including 1991. The first store, which opened in Liverpool city centre, became the flagship of the chain of stores operating under the Lewis's name. Several stores in the chain were bought in 1991 by the company Owen Owen and continued to operate under the Lewis's brand name for several years, but after the closure of the Manchester store in 2001, only the original Liverpool store continued to trade under the Lewis's name. This store was sold in 2007 to the Vergo Retail Ltd and closed in 2010.
The first Lewis's was opened in 1856 in Liverpool by entrepreneur David Lewis, as a men's and boys' clothing store, mostly manufacturing his own stock. In 1864, Lewis's branched out into women's clothing. In the 1870s, the store expanded and added departments, including shoes in 1874, and tobacco in 1879. Also in 1879, Lewis's opened one of the world's first 'Christmas grottoes' in Lewis's Bon March??, Church Street, Liverpool. It was named 'Christmas Fairyland'. His motto was Friends of the People, and he intended the shopping experience to be inclusive
The first Lewis's outside Liverpool opened in nearby Manchester in 1877. Another store was opened, at the suggestion of Joseph Chamberlain, on the new Corporation Street in Birmingham in 1885. The Manchester store included a full scale ballroom on the fifth floor, which was also used for exhibitions. Buying offices were also located on the fifth floor until a takeover by Liverpool-based competitor Owen Owen

Chain buckling under coronavirus shutdown just a year after it was rescued & considering filing a formal notice of intention to appoint administrators.
Debenhams is preparing to call in administrators after the struggling department store was forced to close all its outlets under the coronavirus lockdown.
The company, which has 22,000 staff and was rescued by its lenders after collapsing into administration only a year ago, is understood to be considering filing a formal notice of intention to appoint administrators next week. The legal process provides protection from creditors for 10 working days while a company tries to secure a rescue deal.
Potential administrators lined up this time include KPMG, which handled the Debenhams restructure last May.
A Debenhams spokesman said: Like all retailers, we are making contingency plans reflecting the extraordinary current circumstances. Our owners and lenders remain highly supportive and whatever actions we may take will be with a view to protecting the business during the current situation.
They added: While our stores remain closed in line with government guidance, and the majority of our store-facing colleagues have been furloughed, our website continues to trade and we are accepting customer orders, gift cards and returns.
It is understood that the potential insolvency measure would be intended to protect the business so it could continue to trade.
Debenhams was taken over last year by a group of its financial backers, including the US hedge funds Silver Point and GoldenTree, after falling into administration. It then used an insolvency process known as a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) to cull unprofitable sites and cut rents.
The group has closed 22 stores, 19 of which shut in January, resulting in more than 700 job losses. A further 28 of its remaining 141 stores had been lined up for permanent closure next year.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAEHXG - Debenhams is a British multinational retailer operating under a department store format in the United Kingdom and Ireland with franchise stores in other countries. The company was founded in the eighteenth century as a single store in London and has now grown to 178 locations across the UK, Ireland and Denmark. It sells a range of clothing, household items and furniture and has been known since 1993 for its 'Designers at Debenhams' brand range.
Headquartered in Regent's Place in the London Borough of Camden, the company owns the Danish department store chain, Magasin du Nord, and has a subsidiary in Ireland.
The business was formed in 1778 by William Clark, who began trading at 44 Wigmore Street in London as a drapers' store. In 1813, William Debenham became a partner and the corporate name changed to Clark & Debenham.
After considerable media speculation about Debenhams' survival, the company announced the largest loss in its history, a pre-tax loss of ?491 million, and the closure of up to 50 stores with the potential loss of 4,000 jobs.
On 9 April 2019, the company announced that they had gone into pre-pack administration.
On 26 April 2019, the company announced that in addition to rent reductions on all except 39 stores, 22 stores would close after Christmas 2019. This included the recently opened Wolverhampton store (described above) in addition to the following stores: Altrincham, Ashford, Birmingham Fort, Canterbury, Chatham, Eastbourne, Folkestone, Great Yarmouth, Guildford, Kirkcaldy, Orpington, Slough, Southport, Southsea, Staines,Stockton-on-Tees, Walton-on-Thames, Wandsworth, Welwyn Garden City, Wimbledon and Witney.
