Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6C1 - A street-level view of The Football University Programme building adjacent to Bury Market in Bury town centre, photographed at Bury BL9 0SW, Greater Manchester. The scene shows members of the public moving through the pedestrianised market area, with seating, shoppers and everyday activity visible in the foreground.
The Football University Programme is an educational initiative that uses football and sport as engagement tools to support learning, personal development and aspiration, particularly among young people who may be disengaged from traditional education routes. Its location close to Bury Market places it within a busy civic environment, reinforcing links between education, community life and town-centre regeneration.
Bury Market has long been a focal point of the town's economic and social activity, and recent regeneration efforts have sought to broaden its role beyond retail, incorporating leisure, education and community uses. Projects such as the Football University Programme are often cited in policy and media discussions as examples of place-based regeneration, where social infrastructure is embedded directly into everyday urban settings.
The image captures a cross-section of daily life in a northern English town centre, illustrating how education initiatives coexist with markets, cafés and public seating. Photographed in daylight with people of different ages visible, the scene offers strong editorial value for themes including community regeneration, education and sport, social inclusion, town-centre renewal and contemporary life in Greater Manchester.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EENHYT - Spectators in a grandstand at Silverstone Circuit during Formula 1 British Grand Prix practice day, watching track action from blue seats beside the safety fencing, run-off area and open sky. The image shows the fan experience at one of the most famous motor racing venues in Britain, with spectators in casual clothing, people using phones, drinks in hand, marshals and trackside staff visible in the distance, and the wide Northamptonshire circuit landscape beyond the barrier. Silverstone is officially described as the home of the British Grand Prix and its grandstand ticketing promotes reserved seating across the Friday to Sunday race weekend, making this a useful photograph for editorial coverage of F1 spectators, practice sessions, motorsport tourism, race weekend build-up, grandstand views, sporting crowds and British summer events. The scene appears to be photographed in daylight under mixed cloud, with bright spells and a cool, changeable British weather feel typical of outdoor race meetings. The photograph works well for stories about Formula 1 fans, British Grand Prix attendance, Friday practice, motorsport culture, Silverstone facilities, circuit safety, spectator seating, high-speed sport, event management, travel to major venues and the economics of flagship UK sporting weekends. It also has value for travel, leisure and lifestyle uses showing a relaxed crowd waiting for or watching track activity before the higher-pressure qualifying and race sessions. The visible fencing, gravel run-off and trackside service area give strong context as a live racing circuit rather than a generic outdoor stadium. The composition captures the practical reality of a practice day, with fans spread through the stand, clouds gathering overhead and the atmosphere of anticipation before the main British Grand Prix race.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EDKYYY - A UK polling station entrance is shown inside a public building, with clear election notices giving opening times of 7.00am to 10.00pm, a Way Out arrow, guidance for tellers and a warning sign saying not to use mobile phones. The image is a useful editorial stock photograph for stories about local elections, parliamentary elections, polling day, voter information, electoral administration, democracy, civic participation and the practical process of voting in person. The Electoral Commission says voters must go to their allocated polling station, usually shown on their poll card, and GOV.UK also explains that people can only vote at the polling station location on their card, although they do not need to take the card with them. The visible opening-times notice reflects the standard UK polling hours of 7am to 10pm, with voters already in a queue at 10pm normally still entitled to vote. The image can illustrate the ordinary, functional nature of British elections, where schools, community halls, libraries and other local buildings are temporarily turned into polling places. It is commercially useful for articles on election day, local councils, general elections, voter ID, turnout, democracy, polling station staffing, tellers, campaign volunteers, ballot secrecy, mobile phone restrictions, accessibility and public trust in the electoral process. The signs also show the controlled environment around voting, with information for voters and campaign tellers, privacy expectations and directional signage helping people move through the station. As a documentary stock image, it records the practical infrastructure of democracy rather than party politics, making it suitable for neutral coverage of voting rules, election administration, democratic participation and public service delivery.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJ3YRP - Dove Holes is a village in the High Peak district of Derbyshire, England. It has a population of about 1,200 (2001), shown in the 2011 Census as being included in the population of Chapel-en-le-Frith. It straddles the A6 road approximately three miles north of Buxton and three miles south of Chapel-en-le-Frith. Trains run from Dove Holes railway station into Manchester.
Residents of the village live either in the village or on outlying farms. There are around six farms in the village and many more within the boundaries of the parish. There are also large limestone quarries that, over the years, have made an important contribution to the development and economy of the village. Additionally, there are several businesses. There are two public houses, one of which offers accommodation. There is a daily milk delivery service and a mobile library every fortnight. There is a church, Methodist chapel and a community centre. The village lies on the fringe of the Peak District National Park.
In 1650, a General Survey of the Manor of High Peak was made to assess the property of the late King Charles. This recorded that people were burning limestone around the village and that there were 14 kilns thereabouts, the burnt lime (quicklime) being slaked and used by farmers to condition the soil in their fields. At that time, lime kilns could be built and demolished without authority.
With the coming of the Industrial Revolution, and the opening of the Peak Forest Tramway in 1796, the limestone quarries were commercialised. The first of these was at nearby Loads Knowl and others quickly followed along Dove Holes Dale. Undoubtedly, the opening of the Peak Forest Tramway and the consequent expansion of commercial limestone quarries contributed greatly to the expansion of the village. For the first time, there was an outlet for limestone in Manchester via the Peak Forest Tramway, Bugsworth Basin, the Peak Forest Canal and the Ashton Canal.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ3B1 - A Translink Glider articulated bus travelling along a dedicated corridor in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The Glider service forms the backbone of the city's bus rapid transit system, designed to provide high-capacity, frequent public transport along key eastwest routes.
Introduced as a major investment in Belfast's transport infrastructure, the Glider uses long articulated vehicles to increase passenger capacity while maintaining flexibility compared with fixed rail systems. The service aims to reduce congestion, support sustainable travel, and improve connectivity between residential areas, the city centre, and key employment and retail destinations.
The distinctive purple-liveried buses are a prominent feature of Belfast's streetscape and represent a shift towards modern, integrated public transport provision in Northern Ireland. Dedicated lanes and priority measures allow the Glider to operate more efficiently than conventional bus services.
Photographed in daylight with trees and urban surroundings visible, the image documents contemporary public transport in use and is suitable for editorial coverage of urban mobility, infrastructure investment, sustainable transport, and public services in Belfast.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJW6ND - Ye Cracke is a pub in Rice Street off Hope Street in Liverpool, England. The name is in Old English: the Y is a thorn and the e on the end of Cracke is silent, thus the name is correctly pronounced The Crack. Despite the name, Ye Cracke is a 19th-century pub. The War Office is a small room in the pub, which is the oldest part of the pub.
It has historical connections with The Beatles because it was frequented by John Lennon and his girlfriend Cynthia when they were at art school, as well as the Dissenters, to whom a plaque hangs in the bar.
Thomas Cecil Gray and John Halton conceived the techniques described in their 1946 book A Milestone in Anaesthesia while in the pub.

The Memorial was erected in 1923 to commemorate the millennium of that foundation... and the dead of the Great War, whose names are in lead lettering at its base. The dead of WW2 have been added, again in lead lettering, to the step below the base of the cross

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD23P1 - This image shows a pavement A-board sign advertising Scoops dog ice cream from Marshfield Farm. The sign promotes ice cream specifically made for dogs, describing it as a frozen treat that gets tails wagging, and features playful illustrations and bold, hand-painted style lettering.
Dog ice cream products like this have become increasingly popular in the UK as part of the growth in pet-friendly cafés, tourist destinations, and retail businesses catering to dog owners. Such signage is commonly displayed outside cafés, ice cream parlours, and seaside or rural businesses where dogs are welcomed.
Marshfield Farm is a well-known UK ice cream producer, and its Scoops range reflects wider trends toward niche, novelty, and animal-friendly food products. The sign combines humour and clear messaging to attract attention from passing dog owners.
The photograph works well for editorial use illustrating pet culture, small business marketing, dog-friendly tourism, and everyday retail creativity in public spaces.

It shows jokes and punchlines from comedians who have performed in Blackpool over the decades, totalling 160,000 letters. Each letter is cut from granite and inset in white concrete, in a variety of typefaces. Five months after it was opened, the local council controversially removed part of the work because viewers were thought to be in danger of stepping backwards into the path of trams. The work earned Young the 2012 Marsh Award for Excellence in Public Sculpture. and in 2014 was joint winner of the International Society of Typographic Designers' International Typographic Award

It is a prominent landmark in the city of Chester and the Eastgate clock on top of it is said to be the most photographed clock in England after Big Ben.
The original gate was guarded by a timber tower which was replaced by a stone tower in the 2nd century, and this in turn was replaced probably in the 14th century. The present gateway dates from 1768 and is a three-arched sandstone structure which carries the walkway forming part of Chester city walls. In 1899 a clock was added to the top of the gateway to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria two years earlier. It is carried on openwork iron pylons, has a clock face on all four sides, and a copper ogee cupola. The clock was designed by the Chester architect John Douglas. The whole structure, gateway and clock, was designated as a Grade I listed building on 28 July 1955

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JKMR1J - This ceremonial stone circle was erected around 2,500BC. At present there are seventy-odd stones of heavily weathered local oolitic limestone (see Geology) set in a rather irregular ring about 31m across. They were poetically described by William Stukeley as being corroded like worm eaten wood, by the harsh Jaws of Time
they were said to make a very noble, rustic, sight, and strike an odd terror upon the spectators, and admiration at the design of em. More recently, Aubrey Burl called them seventy-seven stones, stumps and lumps of leprous limestone.
The number of stones has changed over the years. Legends refer to stones having been taken away (to make bridges and the like), and it is likely that this created most of the gaps now visible. The stones are famously uncountable, but originally may have numbered about 105 standing shoulder to shoulder. At the time the Stones were first protected as an ancient monument (1883) the owner was reported to have replaced all the fallen stones in their original foundation. In fact the restoration was far from exact: most of the stones that are known to have been standing in their present positions since the 17th century show that it was originally built as an accurate circle.
THE FORM OF THE STONES
Two stones immediately outside the ring (one fallen) mark the portalled entrance to the circle opposite the tallest stone. The Stones stand in a very low bank with a wide gap on the same side as the entrance, possibly resulting from the interior being levelled.
This form of design with close-set stones, a portalled entrance and levelled interior is very characteristic of stone circles in the Lake District such as Long Meg and her Daughters near Penrith, and, even more similar, Castlerigg near Keswick, and Swinside north of Ulverston. There are also a few in eastern Ireland. It is therefore likely that the people who built the King's Men came from one of those areas. When they felt the need to build a stone cir

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JH06TD - The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin (grid reference SD656003) is a Church of England parish church in Leigh, Greater Manchester, England. It is a member of the Salford & Leigh deanery in the archdeaconry of Salford, diocese of Manchester. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building.
Leigh was in the Diocese of Lichfield and Coventry until 1541 when it was transferred to the Diocese of Chester. In 1847 Leigh became the only parish in the Hundred of West Derby to be part of the new Diocese of Manchester. Leigh has had its own deanery since 1933. Before that it was part of the deanery of Eccles and prior to that Warrington.
History
St. Mary's is in the centre of Leigh by the Civic Square, which was originally the market place, next to the library and opposite the town hall. The church was mentioned in documents in the 13th century but the date of its foundation is uncertain. The first church on the site, dedicated to St Peter, was described as the Church of Westleigh in Leigh. Its dedication was changed to St Mary the Virgin at the end of the 14th century. The church straddled the ancient boundary between the townships of Westleigh and Pennington, the nave and churchyard in Westleigh and the chancel in Pennington

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHW8B8 - Southport's War Memorial is located in the London Square Memorial Garden, on Lord Street. Listed upon the memorial are the names of 1247 Service men and three women, who gave their lives in the Great War.
The Memorial
Southport's War Memorial in London Square is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building.
The material used for construction was Portland stone, and the structure consists of two colonnades and a central obelisk. Each colonnade has one small chapel at each end, and memorial gardens surround the colonnades, which contain Remembrance fountains and pools. Names of the fallen appear for World War One on the chapel walls, and panels have been added to the inside of the colonnades for World War Two and subsequent conflicts.
Public subscription for the Southport war memorial, to extend the hospital, and to provide grants for bereaved children was established after a meeting on 14th February 1919. A War Memorial Committee was formed to raise the money. A total of £31,854 was raised, and a competition was launched for the memorial's design. Sir Reginald Blomfield R.A. was appointed as adviser and assessor for the competition and the design entries were exhibited at Southport Art Gallery. Sir Reginald announced the first prize to Messrs Grayson and Barnish, based at the Royal Liver Building, Liverpool. After a second set of tenders Messrs W. Moss and Sons of Loughborough, Liverpool and London were commissioned as main contractors. Mr Herbert Tyson Smith, a sculptor from Liverpool was commissioned for the carving of inscriptions and 1133 names on the Roll of Honour.
Unveiling Ceremony
On November 18th 1923, an official procession began at the Town Hall, passed the Art Gallery and went via Eastbank Street, Chapel Street and London Street, arriving at London Square. The National Anthem was followed by the Mayor's speech (Mr. Alderman Aveling J.P) before the General Salute was sounded.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M84JDN - Identity Ireland is a minor political party in Ireland. A right-wing to far-right party, it has no representation at local or national level. It was launched in Dublin on 22 July 2015. Its founders are Gary Allen, Peter O'Loughlin and Alan Tighe. O'Loughlin, the party's national spokesperson, contested the 2016 Irish general election and 2019 European Parliament election
Identity Ireland states that it favours Irish sovereignty by leaving the European Union and a return to the Irish pound. The party supports a controlled border policy in order to curtail the immigration that, it says, is putting strain on the Irish welfare system. It also supports more careful vetting of incoming asylum seekers. It supports the Irish branch of Pegida, and has joined the Fortress Europe coalition. It advocates the introduction of a two strike law for serious offences, as well as the re-introduction of penal labour. It supports keeping Ireland's neutrality. It also advocated in favour of Brexit
Identity Ireland has been accused of being racist. Some of its press conferences and meetings, and its launch, have been disrupted by protesters

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GMAA8R - Robert Gordon's College is a private co-educational day school in the heart of Aberdeen, Scotland. The school caters for pupils from Nursery through to S6.
It originally opened in 1750 as the result of a bequest by Robert Gordon, an Aberdeen merchant who made his fortune from trading with Baltic ports, and was known at foundation as Robert Gordon's Hospital. This was 19 years after Gordon had died and left his estate in a 'Deed of Mortification' to fund the foundation of the Hospital. The fine William Adam-designed building was in fact completed in 1732, but lay empty until 1745 until Gordon's foundation had sufficient funds to complete the interior. During the Jacobite rising, in 1746 the buildings were commandeered by Hanoverian troops and named Fort Cumberland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GY1AAG - Maize also known as corn, is a cereal grain first domesticated by indigenous peoples in southern Mexico about 10,000 years ago. The leafy stalk of the plant produces pollen inflorescences and separate ovuliferous inflorescences called ears that yield kernels or seeds, which are fruits.
Maize has become a staple food in many parts of the world, with the total production of maize surpassing that of wheat or rice. However, little of this maize is consumed directly by humans: most is used for corn ethanol, animal feed and other maize products, such as corn starch and corn syrup. The six major types of maize are dent corn, flint corn, pod corn, popcorn, flour corn, and sweet corn.
Maize is widely cultivated throughout the world, and a greater weight of maize is produced each year than any other grain. In 2014, total world production was 1.04 billion tonnes, led by the United States with 35% of the total. China produced 21% of the global total.
In 2016, maize (corn) production was forecast to be over 15 billion bushels, an increase of 11% over 2014 American production. Based on conditions as of August 2016, the expected yield would be the highest ever for the United States. The area of harvested maize was forecast to be 87 million acres, an increase of 7% over 2015. Maize is especially popular in Midwestern states such as Indiana and Illinois
in the latter, it was named the state's official grain in 2017

It has been the location of Surrey County Hall from 1893, extraterritorially in terms of local government administration since Kingston became part of Greater London in 1965. Most of the town centre is part of the KT1 postcode area, but some areas north of Kingston railway station have the postcode KT2 instead. The population of the town itself, comprising the four wards of Canbury, Grove, Norbiton and Tudor, was 43,013 in the 2011 census

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY5KDM - Pork rind is the skin (rind) of a pig. Pork rind is a common ingredient of sausages, which helps to improve their consistency. Fried or roasted pork rind and fat is also a snack. The frying renders much of the fat that is attached to the uncooked rind, causing the cooked product to reduce considerably in size. The product may be known by alternative names, such as pork scratchings or pork crackling in the UK, although the term crackling may also refer to the rind atop a roasted pork joint

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DN6NHM - Spike Island is an island in the estuary of the River Mersey, in North West England, flanked by the Sankey Canal. It is a reclaimed toxic waste site, considered a birthplace of the British chemical industry, and forms a part of Widnes in the Halton borough of Cheshire.
Its maze of abandoned chemical factories, rail lines, canal and industrial dockage, and industrial pollution, which had declined into a rust belt toxic wilderness, was reclaimed as woodland, wetlands and green space between 1975 and 1982. A surviving warehouse is now the home of the Catalyst Museum, the only science museum in the UK solely devoted to chemistry.
Spike Island was the site of a famous outdoor concert by The Stone Roses in May 1990. A film about the concert was released in 2013, and is called Spike Island.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXMH8 - The carrot (Daucus carota subsp. sativus
is a root vegetable, usually orange in colour, though purple, red, white, and yellow varieties exist. It has a crisp texture when fresh. The most commonly eaten part of a carrot is a taproot, although the greens are sometimes eaten as well. It is a domesticated form of the wild carrot Daucus carota, native to Europe and southwestern Asia.
The domestic carrot has been selectively bred for its greatly enlarged and more palatable, less woody-textured edible taproot. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reports that world production of carrots and turnips (these plants are combined by the FAO for reporting purposes) for calendar year 2011 was almost 35.658 million tonnes. Almost half were grown in China. Carrots are widely used in many cuisines, especially in the preparation of salads, and carrot salads are a tradition in many regional cuisines.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG3A1R - An ice cream van (British) or ice cream truck (American) is a commercial vehicle which serves as a traveling retail outlet for ice cream, usually during the summer. Ice cream vans are often seen parked at public events, or near parks, beaches, or other areas where people congregate. Ice cream vans often travel near where children play outside schools, in residential areas, or in other locations. They usually stop briefly before moving on to the next street.
Ice cream vans are often brightly decorated and carry images of ice cream, or some other adornment, such as cartoon characters. They may have painted-on notices, which can serve a commercial purpose (Stop me and buy one!) or a more serious one (Don't Skid on a Kid!) - serving as a warning to passing motorists that children may run out into the road at the sight of the van, or appear without warning from behind it. Along the sides, a large sliding window acts as a serving hatch, and this is often covered with small pictures of the available products, with their associated prices.
A distinctive feature of ice cream vans is their melodic chimes, and often these take the form of a famous and recognizable tune, usually The Mister Softee Jingle, Turkey in the Straw, Do Your Ears Hang Low?, Pop Goes The Weasel The Entertainer, Music Box Dancer, Home on the Range, It's a Small World, Super Mario Bros. Theme or Camptown Races
or, in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Greensleeves, Whistle While You Work in Crewe and Nantwich, You Are My Sunshine in Vale Royal, Teddy Bears' Picnic in Sheffield, and Match of the Day in other places.
In some places in the US, ice cream trucks play the song Ice Cream by Andre Nickatina (essentially just Turkey in the Straw with bass).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DECXB8 - Remembrance Day (also known as Poppy Day or Armistice Day) is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth countries since the end of World War I to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. This day, or alternative dates, are also recognised as special days for war remembrances in many non-Commonwealth countries. Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November to recall the end of hostilities of World War I on that date in 1918. Hostilities formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, in accordance with the Armistice, signed by representatives of Germany and the Entente between 5:12 and 5:20 that morning. (At the 11th hour refers to the passing of the 11th hour, or 11:00 am) World War I officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on 28 June 1919.
The day was specifically dedicated by King George V on 7 November 1919 as a day of remembrance for members of the armed forces who were killed during World War I. This was possibly done upon the suggestion of Edward George Honey to Wellesley Tudor Pole, who established two ceremonial periods of remembrance based on events in 1917.
The Initial or Very First Armistice Day was held at Buckingham Palace commencing with King George V hosting a Banquet in Honour of The President of the French Republic during the evening hours of November 10 1919. The First Official Armistice Day was subsequently held on the Grounds of Buckingham Palace on the Morning of November 11th 1919. This would set the trend for a day of Remembrance for decades to come.
The red remembrance poppy has become a familiar emblem of Remembrance Day due to the poem In Flanders Fields. These poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I, their brilliant red colour an appropriate symbol for the blood spilled in the war.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DED35F - The sporran (/ˈspɒrən/
Scottish Gaelic for purse), a traditional part of male Scottish Highland dress, is a pouch that performs the same function as pockets on the pocketless kilt. Made of leather or fur, the ornamentation of the sporran is chosen to complement the formality of dress worn with it. The sporran is worn on a leather strap or chain, conventionally positioned in front of the groin of the wearer.
Since the traditional kilt does not have pockets, the sporran serves as a wallet and container for any other necessary personal items. It is essentially a survival of the common European medieval belt-pouch, superseded elsewhere as clothing came to have pockets, but continuing in the Scottish Highlands because of the lack of these accessories in traditional dress. The sporran hangs below the belt buckle
and much effort is made to match their style and design. The kilt belt buckle can be very ornate, and contain similar motifs to the sporran cantle and the Sgian Dubh. Early sporrans would have been worn suspended from the belt on one or other of the hips, rather than hung from a separate strap in front of the wearer.
When driving a car, dancing, playing drums, or engaging in any activity where a heavy pouch might encumber the wearer, the sporran can be turned around the waist to let it hang on the hip in a more casual position

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D96MWA - Appleton Thorn is a village in the borough of Warrington in Cheshire, England.
Each June, the village hosts the ceremony of Bawming the Thorn. The current form of the ceremony dates from the Nineteenth century, when it was part of the village's walking day. It involved children from Appleton Thorn Primary School walking through the village and holding sports and games at the school. This now takes place at the Village Hall. The ceremony stopped in the 1930s, but was later revived by the then headmaster, Mr. Bob Jones in the early 1970s. Bawming the Thorn occurs on the Saturday nearest to Midsummer's Day. Local schoolchildren dance around the tree.
Bawming means decorating - during the ceremony the thorn tree is decorated with ribbons and garlands. According to legend, the hawthorn at Appleton Thorn grew from a cutting of the Holy Thorn at Glastonbury, which was itself said to have sprung from the staff of Joseph of Arimathea, the man who arranged for Jesus's burial after the Crucifixion.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D96N1A - Preparing the famous Thorn tree at Appleton Thorn village, South Warrington, England for the annual June Bawming the Thorn
Appleton Thorn is a village in the borough of Warrington in Cheshire, England.

A cracking track, memorable to me because I was playing this getting carried away doing 38 in a 30mph cut through Hattersley avoiding Mottram one morning in 1984. The metallic green VW Golf 1300 has long gone, but my love for the Furs and this track remains un-dimmed.
Mirror Moves is the fourth studio album by the English rock band The Psychedelic Furs, recorded and released in 1984. Vince Ely had left the group, leaving three original Furs and Keith Forsey taking on production and drumming. The album included the dance hit 'Heartbeat' and the minor hits 'Heaven' and 'The Ghost in You'. Another track from the album, 'Here Come Cowboys', was released as a single, but did not chart. However, the band made a video for it which received some airplay on the then, very new and popular MTV network.
Psychedelic Furs are one of the many acts spawned from the British post-punk scene. Their music went through several phases, from an initially austere art rock sound, later touching on new wave and hard rock.
They scored several hits in their early career, but were launched to international attention in 1986 when the film director John Hughes used their song 'Pretty in Pink' for his movie of the same name. A newly recorded version of the song became the Psychedlic Furs' biggest hit to that time. 'Heartbreak Beat', from their 1987 album Midnight to Midnight, was the Furs' biggest Top 40 entry in the US.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BG7KH4 - An ice cream van (British) or ice cream truck (American) is a commercial vehicle that serves as a mobile retail outlet for ice cream, usually during the summer. Ice cream vans are often seen parked at public events, or near parks, beaches, or other areas where people congregate. Ice cream vans often travel near where children play outside schools, in residential areas, or in other locations. They usually stop briefly before moving on to the next street. Along the sides, a large sliding window acts as a serving hatch, and this often displays pictures of the available products and their prices. Most ice cream vans tend to sell both pre-manufactured ice pops in wrappers, and soft serve ice cream from a machine, served in a cone, and often with a chocolate flake (in Britain) or a sugary syrup. While franchises or chains are rare within the ice cream truck community (most trucks are independently owned and run), some do exist.
In some locations, ice cream van operators have diversified to fill gaps in the market for soft drinks, using their capacity for refrigerated storage to sell chilled cans and bottles.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K43PYW - Love Hearts are a type of confectionery manufactured by Swizzels Matlow in the United Kingdom. They are hard, tablet-shaped sweets in various fruit flavors featuring a short, love-related message on one side of the sweet. They are an updated version of Victorian-era Conversation Lozenges
On chewing, the sweet quickly disintegrates into a powdery, starchy consistency
Love Hearts currently come in six flavors, each associated with a color (listed from weakest to strongest flavor):..
White (a plain, sherbet-like, slightly tart vanilla flavor)
Yellow (a sherbet-like flavor with a distinct sharp lemon aftertaste)
Green (a slight lime flavor with a sherbet-like aftertaste)
Orange (a sweet flavor with a slight orange aftertaste)
Purple (an unusual, slightly perfumed berry-like flavor with a strong aftertaste)
Red (cherry flavor)
There are many different messages which can be found on the front of the sweet, most of which are love-related. The message is written in capitals in a sans serif font of varying size. The font is scaled and sometimes stretched out of proportion to fit the available space.
Most messages are written in simple horizontal, centrally aligned lines. There are some exceptions to this rule, including the phrase I Surrender, where the word surrender has been written in an arc around the lower inside edge of the heart outline.
The Just Say No message has an unclear layout, appearing to read Just say No.
Wayne and Coleen Rooney had personalized sweets made for their wedding in the summer of 2008 which read Wayne and Coleen. Special edition Love heart packs were launched for Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding in 2011

Spizzenergi was a late 1970s English punk/new wave band led by Kenneth Spiers, known as Spizz. Championed by John Peel, The band changed its name several times using alternate names including Spizzoil and Athletico Spizz 80.
They were the first band to sign to Geoff Travis's Rough Trade Records and the first to top the newly created UK Indie Chart early in 1980. They were perhaps best known for their single 'Where's Captain Kirk?'
SO WHEN I AWOKE FROM THE DANGERS OF SPACE
I LOOKED AND I SAW A FAMILIAR FACE
THE TIME WARP IN SPACE MADE A CHANGE IN ME
FOR I WAS THE CAPTAIN AND THE CAPTAIN WAS ME
After a Siouxsie and the Banshees gig at Birmingham Odeon Cinema Spizz jumped on stage and sang into the microphones, on the back of which was given a recording deal. He was already performing (solo) by 1977. He soon got together with like-minded guitarist Pete Petrol (real name Pete O'Dowd). In 1978 Palmolive, drummer with The Slits, joined what was called Spizzoil for a few gigs.

In Flanders fields the poppies grow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place
and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch
be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Tell myself it's nothing at all

How you respond to what I say
Am I getting lost in my dreams?
Are you unreachable to me?

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HG6TD2 - The pomegranate (/ˈpɒmᵻɡrænᵻt/), botanical name Punica granatum, is a fruit-bearing deciduous shrub or small tree in the family Lythraceae that grows between 5 and 8 m (16 and 26 ft) tall.
The fruit is typically in season in the Northern Hemisphere from September to February, and in the Southern Hemisphere from March to May. As intact arils or juice, pomegranates are used in baking, cooking, juice blends, meal garnishes, smoothies, and alcoholic beverages, such as cocktails and wine.
The pomegranate originated in the region of modern-day Iran, and has been cultivated since ancient times throughout the Mediterranean region and northern India.[3] It was introduced into Spanish America in the late 16th century and California, by Spanish settlers, in 1769.
Today, it is widely cultivated throughout the Middle East and Caucasus region, north and tropical Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Central Asia, the drier parts of southeast Asia, and parts of the Mediterranean Basin. It is also cultivated in parts of Arizona and California. In recent years, it has become more common in the commercial markets of Europe and the Western Hemisphere

Well what else could you post on 11/11?
The Manic Street Preachers are a Welsh alternative rock band, formed in 1986. They are James Dean Bradfield, Nicky Wire, Richey Edwards and Sean Moore. The band are part of the Cardiff music scene, and were at their most prominent during the 1990s. They are colloquially known as 'The Manics' or 'Manics'.
The band were originally a quartet: main lyricist and guitarist Richey Edwards vanished on 1 February 1995. In November 2008, thirteen years after his disappearance, he was officially declared presumed deceased.
The Manics released their debut album, Generation Terrorists in 1992. Their combination of androgynous glam punk imagery, outspoken invective and songs about 'culture, alienation, boredom and despair' soon gained them a loyal following and cult status. The band's later albums retained a leftist politicisation and intellectual lyrical style, while adopting a broader alternative rock sound.
Enigmatic lyricist Richey Edwards gained early notoriety by cutting the words '4REAL' into his arm with a razor blade (narrowly missing an artery and requiring seventeen stitches) in response to the suggestion that the band were less than authentic. The dark nature of 1994's The Holy Bible reflected the culmination of Edwards' instability.
'If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next' is one of the best known tracks by the Manic Street Preachers, released as the first single from their fifth studio album, This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours, with lyrics written by Nicky Wire (credited as Nick Jones), and music written by James Dean Bradfield and Sean Moore.
It was released on 24 August 1998 and became the first of the band's two number one singles in the United Kingdom to date. The song is in the Guinness World Records as the number one single with the longest title without brackets. The song was voted no 20 on Channel 4's 100 Greatest Number One Singles, is the group's biggest success on the Irish singles chart (where it reached no 3), and is the only Manic Street Preachers track ever to be released as a single in the United States.
Various works on the Spanish Civil War were the inspiration for this song, most notably George Orwell's first-hand account, 'Homage to Catalonia.' (one of my favourite authors). Wire has acknowledged that he was also inspired by a song by The Clash, 'Spanish Bombs', which has a similar subject.
In March 2009, it was discovered that the song was used on the website of the British National Party as the soundtrack of an article describing 'the violence, hatred, fragmentation and despair' wrought on London by the 'great multicultural experiment'. The choice of this song was considered ironic by many, considering the song contains lyrics such as 'So if I can shoot rabbits/Then I can shoot fascists'. Record company Sony were successfully able to have the song removed from the site on the grounds of unauthorised use.
The BNP later released a press statement claiming that 'the song had mistakenly been automatically streamed on to its site and had nothing to do with the official party' and that 'you can interpret the lyrics any way you want'.

Woodchurch was withdrawn in 2003. The ferry's superstructure was totally removed and replaced. New engines and electrical equipment were installed. A few months later it was revealed that she would be renamed Snowdrop, alongside the Royal Iris of the Mersey and Royal Daffodil. This renewed a 125-year-old link with the past, with all Mersey ferries now carrying traditional Wallasey flower names
Mersey Ferries' fascinating Manchester Ship Canal round-trip Cruises sail from Liverpool and Wirral, travel along the captivating Manchester Ship Canal to the historic Latchford Locks and back, giving you the opportunity to experience a round-trip in the same day!
Relax as you travel under bridges mostly unchanged since they were built over 125 years ago and experience the rich legacy of Victorian architecture and engineering masterpieces like the Grade II listed Runcorn Rail Bridge and the Latchford High Level Bridge.
At Latchford Locks the ferry will turn and start the return journey back to Liverpool and Wirral. As you sail back along the canal, through Eastham Locks into the River Mersey, you will get a breath-taking view of the Mersey Estuary and Liverpool's world famous waterfront in the distance. Enjoy the incredible panoramic views of the stunning coastline, Liverpool's famous skyline and historic buildings.
To make your journey even more enjoyable, on board you'll learn about the history of the canal and landmarks from our Blue Badge Guide's live commentary. The cruise features live music from talented local artists, and the fully licensed bar will be open throughout, so you can buy snacks and drinks.
Cruises last between 5 - 6 hours

The Datsuns formed in 2000 are a 1970's inspired hard rock band from Cambridge, New Zealand,. In August 2000 they released their first single, 'Super Gyration!,' on 7' vinyl only. In July 2002, after featuring several times on the greap and sadly lost John Peel's programme on the BBC Radio 1 and being hailed as 'the future of rock' by the British music press, the band signed with the V2 record label. Their self-titled debut album made a strong impression in the UK. They won the NME's 'Best Live Band' award.
