Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PNRFC4 - Purplebricks is an online estate agent which operates in the UK. Founded in 2012 by Michael Bruce, Kenny Bruce and David Shepherd, it is backed by investors that include venture capital firm DN Capital as well as Neil Woodford, Paul Pindar, and Errol Damelin.
History
Early history
Michael Bruce, Kenny Bruce and David Shepherd conceived their idea for an online estate agency in 2012.Property sales in the United Kingdom had historically been handled by traditional (or high street) estate agencies
Purplebricks' commission-free, hybrid agency business model was intended to disrupt the UK residential property market, and marketing has been a central element of the company's business strategy.
In 2016, Purplebricks began using the tagline commisery, meaning the misery home sellers feel about paying commission, to distinguish itself from traditional real estate agencies. A full advertising campaign about the concept followed the next year, and ran extensively in the UK, US, and Australia. The campaign won an Effectiveness Award from the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising in 2018 for demonstrating proof on payback on marketing communications, as the campaign contributed to a 218 percent growth in revenue.
In 2019, Purplebricks was added to the Superbrands list, which tracks consumer perception of brand and marketing activity. Purplebricks' presence on the list was seen as an indication that the company had established itself as a household name. In 2020, Purplebricks claimed to have achieved 98 percent brand awareness within the UK

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PK7XBF - The organ was not completed until 1926 and finally dedicated on 18th October that year.
An 'Anniversary' recital is given by the Cathedral Organist each year on the nearest Saturday to 18th, in commemoration of its dedication.
The organ is situated in two chambers on opposite sides of the Choir. It currently comprises 10,268 pipes and 200 stops contained in nine divisions. The Great, Solo, and Bombarde organs occupy the South case
the Swell, Choir and Positif occupy the North case
the Corona Organ (installed 1997) is situated in a gallery high up under the tower vaulting
and the Central Organ (installed 2007) is located on the South Central Gallery
the Pedal organ being distributed between both North and South cases.
There are two five-manual consoles
the original one up in a dedicated gallery under the North Choir case and a mobile recital console at floor level, the generous gift, in 1989, of Victor Hutson CBE. The Choir and Positif Organs are played from the same keyboard, the Corona organ can be played from either the Choir or Bombarde keyboard, and the Central organ from either the Bombarde or Great.
The 'Trompette Militaire' and the 'Tuba Magna' stops are the loudest voices on the organ, with the 'Militaire' being located high up on the Corona Gallery beneath the Tower vaulting
manufactured and dedicated in 1997, it was the generous gift of Prof Alan Dronsfield. Conversely the 'Tuba Magna' is located high up in the South case of the organ and speaks into the Central Space of the Cathedral.
Both the recital console and the 'Militaire' were manufactured in the Liverpool workshops of David Wells Organ Builders, who are custodians of the organ and responsible for its tuning and current refurbishment.
When the organ was completed in 1926 it was the largest musical instrument ever conceived, and, since the installation of the Central division in 2007, it continues to be the largest pipe organ in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1WB79 - Freemasonry in Derbyshire was first established as early as 1732, about 15 years after the formation of the first Grand Lodge and around 86 years after the first ever recorded Lodge in England.
The earliest Lodges were often named after the building where the meetings took place, which not surprisingly would have been an Inn or Tavern. Alternatively, from place or family names. The latter being the case here in Glossop. Initially taking its name from the family of the Duke of Devonshire and recently changed to Glossopdale Lodge following a restructure in 2017.
Over time, Lodges were formed and Lodges were disbanded. The oldest surviving Lodge in Derbyshire is Tyrian Lodge ?? 253, being established in 1785. The Province of Derbyshire was designated, largely observing the County boundary, in 1789. As the number of subscribing members grew, new (daughter) Lodges opened, including our Lodge in Glossop in 1853. We are the fourth oldest surviving Lodge in Derbyshire. If you are tracing your family history and would like to know if any were freemasons in our Lodge, we would love to help you.
The Lodge originally met at the Globe Inn, High Street West, moving in 1857 to the Norfolk Arms.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTF4C0 - Salts Mill (sometimes spelled Salt's Mill) is a former textile mill, now an art gallery, shopping centre, and restaurant complex in Saltaire, Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. It was built by Sir Titus Salt in 1853, and the present-day 1853 Gallery takes its name from the date of the building which houses it. The mill has many paintings by the local artist David Hockney on display and also provides offices for Pace plc.
The Mill and surrounding town of Saltaire was financed and built by the 19th century industrialist and philanthropist Sir Titus Salt after he observed other textile factories and was disappointed by the working conditions he saw there. At the time mill working conditions were commonly poor, with most workers suffering disease, low wages and labour exploitation. Dangerous machinery and long hours, sometimes exceeding 16 hour working days, resulted in frequent accidents. Titus Salt acknowledged this and built a factory and surrounding town with which he intended to improve the working conditions for his employees. When completed, the mill was the largest industrial building in the world by total floor area. It is a grade II* listed building. The mill closed in 1986 and the following year it was sold to Jonathan Silver, who began a long renovation scheme

This is the first time this vast work has been seen in the UK. A Year in Normandie joins together some of the 220 iPad works Hockney created throughout 2020 using a specially adapted version of his favoured app, printed onto paper, and shown in a continuous run.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JWB564 - Cod liver oil is a dietary supplement derived from liver of cod fish (Gadidae). As with most fish oils, it contains the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and also vitamin A and vitamin D. Historically, it was given to children because vitamin D had been shown to prevent rickets, a consequence of vitamin D deficiency.
Cod liver oil has traditionally come in many grades. Cod liver oil for human consumption is pale and straw colored, with a mild flavor. Scandinavian Vikings produced cod liver oil by laying birch tree branches over a kettle of water, and fresh livers were laid over the branches. The water was brought to a boil and as the steam rose, the oil from the liver dripped into the water and was skimmed off. There was also a method for producing fresh raw cod liver oil.
In the Industrial Revolution, cod liver oil became popular for industrial purposes. Livers placed in barrels to rot, with the oil skimmed off over the season, was the main method for producing this oil. The resulting oil was brown and foul tasting. In the 1800s cod liver oil became popular as a medicine and both pale and brown oils were used. Brown oils were common because they were cheaper to produce. Some doctors believed in only using the fresh pale oil, while others believed the brown oil was better. The rancid brown oils tended to cause intestinal upset.
The M??ller Process was invented by Peter M??ller in 1850. The livers are ground with water into a slurry, then this is gently simmered until the oil rises to the top. The oil is skimmed off and purified. Other methods used in modern times include the Cold Flotation Process, pressure extraction, and pressure cooking. These all require further purification steps to get a pure oil.
Though similar in fatty acid composition to other fish oils, cod liver oil has higher concentrations of vitamins A and D

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHB6PN - Born Meshe David Osinsky and a Lithuanian Jew in Kurkliai, Kaunas province, he came alone to the UK in 1900 to escape the Russian pogroms. He was well-educated, having studied in a yeshiva,[1] but arrived unable to speak English
In 1901, he was staying in Cheetham Hill, Manchester. He started as a peddler, then set up as a general outfitter in Chesterfield in 1903 selling readymade suits bought from a wholesaler.[2][3] Following his marriage to Sophie Marks in 1909 the name of the company was changed from M. Burton to Burton & Burton. On the birth of twin boys in (1917) he gave his name as Montague Maurice Burton.
He died while speaking after a dinner in Leeds on 21 September 1952. The funeral was at the Harrogate Synagogue (some sources say Chapeltown) and he was interred at Gildersome.
?The Tailor of Taste'
When Montague Burton became a limited company in 1917, it was registered as ?Montague Burton the Tailor of Taste Ltd'. The slogan, as part of Burton's name, formed part of firm's logo, appearing on fascias, parapets, floors, and even on ventilation grilles.
Tiles and Mosaics
The entrance lobbies of many Burton shops had mosaic floors in the early-to-mid 20th century, and Burton was no exception. These sometimes included the popular Burton slogan: ?Let Burton Dress You'. This also appears in a black and red glazed terracotta panel on the side elevation of the branch in Abergavenny (1937). Burton's terracotta was usually supplied by the Middleton Fireclay Co. of Leeds

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3TJW4 - The Ruts (later known as Ruts DC) are an English reggae-influenced punk rock band, notable for the 1979 UK top 10 hit single Babylon's Burning, and an earlier single In a Rut, which was not a hit but was highly regarded and regularly played by BBC Radio 1 disc jockey John Peel. The band's newfound success was cut short by the death of lead singer Malcolm Owen from a heroin overdose in 1980. Despite this the band continued under a different musical style as Ruts D.C. until 1983 when they disbanded, the band later reformed in 2007.
Career
Formation and early days
The Ruts were formed on 18 August 1977. On 16 September 1977, the band made their live debut, playing three songs during a break in a set by Mr Softy (another Fox band) at The Target, a pub in Northolt, Middlesex. The band consisted of singer Malcolm Owen (vocals), Paul Fox (guitar), John Segs Jennings (bass) and Dave Ruffy (drums). Ruffy moved from bass to drums after original drummer Paul Mattocks left, and the band was active in anti-racist causes as part of the Misty in Roots People Unite collective based in Southall, West London, playing several benefits for Rock Against Racism. Although the band were often described as coming from Southall, Owen was from Hayes, Fox moved from Kilburn to Hayes in the 1960s, whilst Ruffy and Segs were based in South London. Ruffy had been born in York, but spent his formative years in the East End of London, whilst Segs grew up in Southend-on-Sea, having been born in the East End.
Schoolboy friends Fox and Owen shared a mutual interest in music, having met at Hayes Manor School. In the early 1970s they lived together in a commune on the Isle of Anglesey off the coast of North Wales, where they formed a rock band called Aslan with Paul Mattock, who played flute, guitar and keyboards and later became the Ruts' first drummer.
Post Office telephone engineer Jennings met record shop manager Ruffy in 1976

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D8D633 - In the 1990s several surveys were undertaken at St Mary's church, highlighting areas of structural instability and poor maintenance. The congregation had also fallen to around 400. The bishop decided to merge the parish with that of St Augustine
that parish had been erected in 1929 to cater for new residential areas in Westy, but the church had been closed and demolished in 2005. A new church would be built to serve the new parish and old St Mary's would be demolished. However, the old church was listed in 2005, and its future remains unresolved.
The new church was built at Latchford, on a site on Knutsford Road equidistant between the two former parish churches. In June 2008 the first designs, by David Horne of Hulme Upright Manning, were displayed, and the comments of the community carefully considered in the final design and decoration of the church. The new church opened in 2010, and may be the first newly-built Catholic church to be dedicated to Blessed John Henry Newman - More at https://taking-stock.org.uk/building/blessed-john-henry-newman-latchford/

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy TRN0YM - Ex-trawlerman Rab Youngman felt a once-proud fishing port like Aberdeen deserved a permanent shrine to its seafaring souls.
So, after campaigning for many years, the 72-year-old Shetlander, who went to sea at 15, was delighted to see the Aberdeen Fishing Memorial being unveiled yesterday.
Two bronze figures ? a fisherman hauling a net brimful of fish and a woman carrying a laden basket ? now look down on the city's harbour.
For Rab, it's recognition that's disgracefully long overdue to the brave men and women who made such a huge contribution to life and prosperity on Scotland's shores.
Beaming ex-trawlerman Rab Youngman at home on a boat (Image: UGC MSN)
He said: There's a generation in Aberdeen who don't even know what a trawler looks like. Aberdeen didn't bother to save one for posterity.
For every man at sea, he employed seven ashore ? net menders, ice factory workers, fishmarket porters, lorry drivers, welders, platers, engineers? you name it.
And women were very important. The wives supported the trawlermen in so far as the father was never there, he was always at sea.
They were amazing lassies. You'd see them during the day in the harbourside fish-houses. Then at night we'd go up town to the dance halls and you wouldn't recognise them.
Often you'd find a trawlerman married to a fishwoman, as I am myself. My wife Wilma was a fish filleter for 40 years on and off in Aberdeen and Peterhead.

Rab, who retired in Boddam, near Peterhead, launched an online petition for a memorial.
It was backed by Labour MSP Lewis Macdonald. George Adam, the city's lord provost at the time, also took up the fight and support soon came from the city council.
Funding was provided from the city's Common Good Fund and there was backing from the Fishermen's Mission.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK6B2 - 9/11 memorial's fountains flow
The fountain, where the north tower of the World Trade Center once stood, was undergoing tests of the massive pumping systems that will blast 26,000 gallons a minute over the 30-foot deep black granite walls.
Daniels, who happened upon the test yesterday, said the sight of the water filling the 1-acre pool was awe-inspiring after years of planning and building.
Construction workers from around the site paused to look and listen during the tests as engineers below the memorial plaza monitored and adjusted the 16 pumps that will circulate 480,000 gallons of recycled water.
During the design phase of the memorial, there were concerns that the fountains might be too loud. But Daniels said the sound of the cascading water yesterday created a nice, peaceful background, like the sound of the ocean.
It's perfect. It's not overwhelming at all, Daniels said.
A second fountain over the footprint of the south tower will be ready for testing later this year. A spokesman for the Port Authority, which is overseeing construction of the $500 million memorial, said yesterday's trial run went very well.
The two fountains together make up the nation's largest manmade waterfalls, and are at the heart of the design of the memorial, called Reflecting Absence.
Paula Berry, a 9/11 family member who served on the 13-member jury that picked the memorial design by Michael Arad, was ecstatic about the test run.
The presence of water is incredibly important at the memorial, said Berry. When you think of the memorial's name, Reflecting Absence, you have to have the means to reflect and the water plays that role.
But Berry said the sound of the water rushing over the sides of the fountains could very well be one of the most lasting impressions visitors take away.
Yesterday's tests lasted a few hours, and will be repeated as needed.
Construction of the memorial remains on schedule for its planned opening next Sept. 11 ? the 10th anniversary

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DA91H9 - The Church of the Holy Rude is the medieval parish church of Stirling, Scotland. It is named after the Holy Rood, a relic of the True Cross on which Jesus was crucified. The church was founded in 1129 during the reign of David I, but earliest part of the present church dates from the 15th century. As such it is the second oldest building in Stirling after Stirling Castle, parts of which date from the later 14th century. The chancel and tower were added in the 16th century.
Stirling Castle has long been a favoured residence of the Scottish monarchs, and was developed as a Renaissance palace during the reigns of the later Stewart Kings. The Church of the Holy Rude, adjacent to the castle, became similarly associated with the monarchy, hosting royal baptisms and coronations. It is one of three churches still in use in Britain that have been the sites of coronations
The church has a historic churchyard lying primarily to the west and north-west of the church. Stones date from the 16th century.
The churchyard was extended in 1851, creating the fascinating Valley Cemetery to the north, divided from the old cemetery by only a path. This contains a series of statues by Alexander Handyside Ritchie to figures of the Reformation.
The old graveyard contains a unique stone with a carved depiction of body snatching, marking the theft of Mary Stevenson (1767?1822) by James McNab, the local gravedigger who had buried her two days earlier, on 16 November 1822, aided by a friend, Daniel Mitchell. The body was passed to John Forrest, for dissection. The two men were caught, but released due to legal technicalities and a riot ensued. Mary's body was reburied and the stone carved to mark the strange event.

The current building was constructed, as Hutchesons' Hospital, between 1802 and 1805 to a design by the Scottish architect David Hamilton. This building was to replace an earlier hospital of 1641 in the city's Trongate, which needed to be removed to created Hutcheson Street. Hamilton's design incorporates in its frontage statues (carved in 1649 by James Colquhoun) from this earlier hospital.
Hutcheson's Hospital was built with monies left in the will of brothers George Hutcheson (c. 1580-1639) and Thomas Hutcheson (1589-1641) for the purposes of building a hospital for the elderly and a school for poor boys. The school is still operating today, although fee-paying, as Hutchesons' Grammar School.
In 1876, the architect John Baird was commissioned to refurbish the hall. This work heightened the structure and added a feature staircase.
The building fell into disrepair and had been empty since 2008. In June 2014, having undergone a ?1.4M refurbishment, it was restored by James Rusk of The Rusk Company and opened as a three flooring dining venue - Hutchesons steak and seafood house

Founded as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878, the club changed its name to Manchester United in 1902 and moved to Old Trafford in 1910.
Manchester United have won 20 league titles, the most of any English club, 11 FA Cups, four League Cups and a record 20 FA Community Shields. The club has also won three European Cups, one UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, one UEFA Super Cup, one Intercontinental Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup. In 1998?99, the club became the first in the history of English football to achieve the treble of the Premier League, the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League.
The 1958 Munich air disaster claimed the lives of eight players. In 1968, under the management of Matt Busby, Manchester United became the first English football club to win the European Cup. Alex Ferguson won 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles, 5 FA Cups and 2 UEFA Champions Leagues, between 1986 and 2013, when he announced his retirement. Louis van Gaal is the club's current manager after Ferguson's successor David Moyes was sacked after only 10 months in charge.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F1JB4E - Pan Am Flight 103 was a regularly scheduled Pan Am transatlantic flight from Frankfurt to Detroit, via London and New York, that was destroyed by a terrorist bomb on Wednesday, 21 December 1988, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew on board, in what became known as the Lockerbie bombing. Large sections of the aircraft crashed onto residential areas of Lockerbie, Scotland, killing 11 more people on the ground.
Following a three-year joint investigation by Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary and the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, arrest warrants were issued for two Libyan nationals in November 1991. In 1999, Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi handed over the two men for trial at Camp Zeist, Netherlands after protracted negotiations and UN sanctions. In 2001, Libyan intelligence officer Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was jailed for life after being found guilty of 270 counts of murder in connection with the bombing. In August 2009, he was released by the Scottish Government on compassionate grounds after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. He died in May 2012, remaining the only person to be convicted for the attack. He had continually protested his innocence.
In 2003, Gaddafi accepted responsibility for the Lockerbie bombing and paid compensation to the families of the victims, although he maintained that he had never given the order for the attack. During the Libyan Civil War, in 2011, a former government official claimed that the Libyan leader had personally ordered the bombing. Numerous conspiracy theories have developed regarding responsibility for the destruction of Pan Am Flight 103.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDJNGD - Bernard John Bernie Marsden (born 7 May 1951) is an English rock guitarist. Having played with Glenn Cornick's Wild Turkey in 1974, he then played with Babe Ruth, from 1975?76, before becoming an original member of Paice Ashton Lord in 1977 and then joining the hard rock band, Whitesnake, after having the possibility of playing with his boy-time hero Paul McCartney and Wings because while waiting, David Coverdale asked him to form Whitesnake.
In more recent years, Marsden has toured with his bands Company of Snakes, M3 (both formed with fellow former Whitesnake members Micky Moody and Neil Murray), and performed with Elkie Brooks. Over the years he has taken part in a number of sessions and has released a handful of solo albums (And About Time, Too!, Look at Me Now, Green & Blues, Stacks). He has also collaborated with Micky Moody on a number of Marsden-Moody live and studio projects.
On the Sweden Rock Festival on 10 June 2011 Bernie Marsden played with Whitesnake for the first time since 1981, thus becoming the second of only two former Whitesnake band members who have played with Whitesnake in recent years, the other person being Adrian Vandenberg, who also played with them on the Sweden Rock Festival. In the last ten years, Marsden has been involved in very different projects. The most unusual being two engagements at the National Theatre in London for Nickolas Hytner's productions of Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale and Henry the V in collaboration with Simon Webb. Also, he appeared in ZDF television in Germany for their production of Frankie, a six-part TV special.
After this, Marsden has worked alongside Robert Plant, Paul Weller, Ian Paice and Jon Lord for a charity concert in London. Bernie also played Guitar with Ringo Starr and his son Zak Starkey in Monte Carlo. Most recently, he has been playing and writing for guitar virtuoso Joe Bonamassa.

Now its political, meet the mask in front of the man. August, always a mad busy crazy time in Edinburgh, during the festival and fringe, which seems to have grown even bigger than the tattoo and festival. There's no shortage of scaryness and satire here!.
Was it a rare trip north to address the Scots nation to plead with Alex Salmond to not leave the union? Maybe a ploy to drum up more Scottish Tories. Famously as they say, there are more pandas at Edinburgh zoo than tory MP's up here.
Do let me know in the comments below what 'message you might leave for Mr Cameron'.
Did I leave a message, well how do you resist? I just wrote 'Keep your hands off the NHS you scoundrel, stop selling Britain by the pound....'
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (The Fringe) is the world's largest arts festival, with the 2012 event spanning 25 days totalling over 2,695 shows from 47 countries in 279 venues. Established in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival, it takes place annually in Scotland's capital, in the month of August. The Fringe is a showcase for the performing arts, particularly theatre and comedy (which has seen substantial growth in recent years), although dance and music are also represented. In 2012, 36% of shows were comedy and 28% theatrical productions. Theatrical productions range from the classics of ancient Greece to William Shakespeare, Samuel Beckett and contemporary works. In 2012, 1,418 shows were having their world premiere.
The Fringe is an unjuried festival – with no selection committee, and therefore any type of performance may participate. The Fringe has often showcased experimental works that might not be invited to a more conservative arts festival. In addition to ticketed, programmed events, the Festival has included a street fair, located primarily on the Royal Mile. The Festival is organized by the Festival Fringe Society, which publishes the programme, sells tickets, and offers advice to performers. Their offices are on the Royal Mile.

The band formed in 1976 in London and Vanian is the only ever-present member of the group. They were the first of the British punk bands to release a single, an album, have a record hit the UK charts, and tour the United States.
Lett changed his name to Dave Vanian (pronounced as in 'Transylvanian') when he became a musician, having previously worked as a gravedigger.
He was one of the early influencers of gothic fashion by wearing dark and otherworldly clothing both on-stage and off. In November 1976, the British music magazine, NME, commented that Vanian 'resembles a runaway from The Addams Family'.
This was a cracking gig at The Parr Hall in Warrington 5th May 2012.

Girls - 'Prefab Sprout' - Play this track here.
¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
A car for a lady? This is a track that brings back brilliant memories for me.
According to the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles &
Albums, the band was named after a phrase from the Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood song, 'Jackson', misheard by frontman Paddy McAloon. The correct opening lyrics for 'Jackson' are 'We got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout' which McAloon misinterpreted as 'hotter than a prefab sprout'. The rest is history.
This track is from the excellent 'From Langley Park to Memphis' album. It was the first single and only actually reached 44 in the UK charts, although spent a month or so there.
The song is a response to Bruce Springsteen's perceived lyrical style and alleged narrow song repertoire. Pat McAloon suggests that Springsteen's worldview is too restricted and that 'some things hurt more, much more, than cars and girls'. Ironically, the song's popularity is partly due to it being misinterpreted as a 'driving song', leading it to appear on compilation albums such as Summer Cruisin' and Top Gear.
Checkout 'Langley Park' for some of the greatest tracks from the band.

Fiat previewed the all new 500 in March 2007. This was exactly 50 years after the first Fiat 500 was presented. The design of the new 2007 Fiat 500 is based on the 2004 Fiat Trepiuno concept. This car features a distinctive retro-look just like the Volkswagen New Beetle and BMW MINI but is substantially cheaper than those cars.
It has a starting price of €10,500 (similar to how the original Fiat 500 was cheaper than the Volkswagen Beetle and Austin Mini). Fiat shares the underpinnings of the new 500 with Ford for the 2009 Ford Ka. They are made at the Fiat factory in Tychy, Poland.

The Fullers brewery write up describes it as 'this olde worlde property is full of period features, character and charm. All 12 bedrooms are stylish and furnished to an excellent standard. We take great care in choosing our beds and bed linen, so that our guests have a comfortable and relaxing sleep'.
It goes on 'The restaurant enjoys an excellent reputation for good home-cooked food, using the finest local produce, good wines and Fuller's award winning beers. The Fisherman's Haunt is close to the New Forest, within easy reach of the Christchurch and Bournemouth areas and is ideal for the country lover and angler, with the River Avon being close by'.

Probably a fitting reminder that Britain elected its first green MP in Brighton only last week.
Under the UK parliamentary system of government, a hung parliament (also known as a minority parliament, a balanced parliament or no overall control) is a legislature in which no political party has an absolute majority of seats.
This situation is normal in many legislatures with proportional representation such as the parliaments of Germany and Ireland, or in legislatures with strong regional parties
in such legislatures the term 'hung parliament' is rarely used since this is the typical outcome of an election.
However in nations in which the first-past-the-post voting system in single member districts is used to elect parliament, such as the United Kingdom and Canada, a coalition government or 'hung parliament' tends to be less common, as in these circumstances one party will usually hold enough seats to form a majority, often without a plurality of votes on a national basis. To resolve a hung parliament will usually result in either a coalition government, a minority government – or even a dissolution of parliament and a fresh election. It is these who will be choosing the paint tonight, in one of Londons most iconic addresses.

No lies, back in the government
No tears, party time is here again
President Gas is up for president
Line up, put your kisses down
Say 'yeah' say 'yes' again
Stand up, there's a head count
President Gas on everything but roller skates
It's sick the price of medicine
Stand up, we'll put you on your feet again
Open up your eyes just to check that you're asleep again
President Gas is President Gas again
He comes in from the left sometimes
He comes in from the right
It's so heavily advertised that he wants you and I
It's a real cowboy set, electric company
Every day is happy days
It's hell without the sin, but
This old track from the The Psychedelic Furs, President Gas usually comes to mind when I am doing my civic duty every three to four years.
The Furs were an act spawned from the British punk rock scene. Originally RKO,' then 'Radio' and for a while 'The Europeans'. Built around singer Richard Butler and his brother Tim Butler on bass guitar. The classic first album was a Steve Lillywhite production.
The band recorded their 1983 album, Forever Now, with producer Todd Rundgren in Woodstock, New York. In 1986 when movie director/writer John Hughes borrowed their song title 'Pretty in Pink' for his movie of the same name. A newly-recorded version of the song became the Psychedlic Furs' biggest hit to that time. 'Heartbreak Beat' from the 1987 album 'Midnight To Midnight', was to be the Furs' biggest top 40 entry in the US.
The band split in the early 1990s, with the Butler brothers going on to found Love Spit Love. In 2000, 'Beautiful Chaos: Greatest Hits Live' was released to plug the gap of the missing live album. In my opinion, the BBC in concert bootlegs of 1982 &
1984 are better encapsulations of the band live. I saw them at the Royal Court in Liverpool that latter year.
A UK reunion tour was pencilled in last year including a manchester academy date, but this was unfortunately cancelled. earlier dates in the USA went ahead and a recording of 17/09/2009 in San Francisco that can be found on the web sounds like a band on top form.
Fingers crossed I may manage to see them again soon!

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4548365291 - 'Narcissus is the mainly spring flowering bulb that usually signals in Europe that warmer times are on the way. Daffodil or Daffy is the common english name used. In the west, the Narcissus flower is seen as a symbol of vanity, in China, the same flower is seen as a symbol of wealth and good fortune. Since the flower blooms in early spring, it has also become a symbol of Chinese New Year. Daffodil is the national flower of Wales. In Wales it is traditional to wear a daffodil or a leek on Saint David's Day. The welsh form of David is Dafydd, which sounds similar. However in welsh, the daffodil is known as Cenhinen Bedr (Peter's Leek), so go figure!
All Narcissus varieties contain the alkaloid poison lycorine, mostly in the bulb but also in the leaves. 'Daffodil itch' is a common dermatitis problems for florists. It is blamed on calcium oxalate exposure in the sap.
The yellow flowers always cheer me up and remind me that summer is not so far away!

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4482339695 - 'The super historic market square off the village green at Witney in lovely West Oxfordshire, sitting on the river Windrush, about 12 or so miles from Morses Oxford after a rain shower. It is also the constituancy of Mr Cameroone, current leader of the Tory party (possible prime minister or another ex-Tory leader if he fluffs that gig in May 2010).
A buttercross (as seen here), also known as butter cross, is a type of market cross associated with English market towns, such as Witney and dating from medieval times. Its name originates from the fact that they were located at the market place (same as today), where people from neighbouring villages would gather to buy locally produced butter, milk and eggs. The fresh produce was laid out and displayed on the circular stepped bases of the cross.
Their design varies from place to place, but they are usually covered by some type of roof to offer shelter, although the roofs were mostly added at a much later date than the original cross they cover.
Witney Market began in the Middle Ages. Thursday is the traditional market day and I have spent some interesting lunchtimes here. There is also a market on Saturday. The buttercross was built in about 1600 and its clock was added in 1683.
The town hall, here to the left of the shot is 18th century. Local legend holds that it was designed by Sir Christopher Wren, but this claim is unstantiated (a bit like how Mr Cameroooon is to slash UK debt, but not actually increase taxes).
A more credible claim is that Witney was the centre of blanket manufacture (which it was). In fact the local footy team (of which I have not actually seen, accompained by a pie at half time) Witney United FC retains its nickname 'The Blanketmen' from the town's traditional trade.

Apparently these were not originally a London thing.
First public police telephones of this type, although red in Britain were introduced in Glasgow in 1891. Gas lanterns were attached to the roof so to signal for instructions. The Metropolitan Police (Met) introduced police boxes throughout London between 1928 and 1937. These boxes were not made of wood as would first seem. The original MacKenzie Trench blueprints indicate that the material for the shell of the box is 'concrete' with only the door being made of teak hardwood.
A little heater was supplied as the boxes would have been notoriously cold. By 1953 there were 685 police boxes on the streets of London. In the late 1960's they were killed by the advent of the walkie-talkie. Some still survive and have been converted into High Street coffee bars. When I am up in Edinburgh I see quite a few, though quite a few are in various states of disrepair. Edinburgh's boxes are often ornate with faux neoclassical decoration.

The image was assembled from about 15 prints taken from different viewpoints one autumn afternoon, in the style of a David Hockney joiner. The Liverpool waterfront is an iconic cityscape and here is shown in the warm afternoon setting sunlight.
A 80mm or shallower lens will have been used here. To get the whole of these really impressive listed buildings (national treasures some would say) in would take a 14mm or wider, and cause much distortion).
An old merseybus double decker adds a bit of an every day feel to it. Although not as iconic as a red routemaster London bus, for a long time it was a mode of transport that marked Liverpool out.
While I lived there, if a bus had not arrived by the time seven taxi's had passed, that was time to take the eigth taxi. (Even if you had already paid £4.10 for your MerseyTravel card).

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3734237235 - 'Latin name Buddleja davidii.
Unusually no butterflies on this one.
Buddleja, often spelled Buddleia is a genus of flowering plants. It is now included in the figwort family, Scrophulariaceae, though in the past was previously classified in either the Loganiaceae or in a family of its own, the Buddlejaceae. The generic name honours Reverend Adam Buddle (1662–1715), who was a botanist and a rector in Essex, England.
The roughly 100 species are mostly shrubs, a few being trees
the largest species reach 30 m (98 ft) tall, but most species rarely exceed 5 m (16 ft) tall. Both evergreen and deciduous species occur. They are native throughout the warmer parts of the New World from the southern United States south to Chile, and widely in the Old World in Africa and the warmer parts of Asia, but absent as natives from Europe and Australasia. The species are divided into two groups based on their floral type, those in the New World being dioecious, and those in the Old World being monoecious.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T09JG6 - Long Descriptive Narrative (Editorial / Documentary)
Close view of an official HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) sign mounted on the exterior of The Old Post Office, 2 The Esplanade, Rochdale OL16 1AE, Greater Manchester. The brushed metal plaque features the Royal Coat of Arms, symbolising the authority of the UK justice system and the administration of courts and tribunals in England and Wales.
HMCTS is an executive agency of the UK Ministry of Justice, responsible for the operation of criminal, civil and family courts, as well as tribunals covering areas such as immigration, employment and social security. The service plays a central role in ensuring access to justice, managing court buildings, listings, staff and digital case systems.
In recent years, HMCTS has been closely associated with wide-ranging court modernisation and reform programmes, including court closures, estate rationalisation and the expansion of digital hearings. These changes have generated significant public and professional debate, with supporters highlighting efficiency and accessibility gains, while critics raise concerns about local access, delays and the impact on vulnerable court users.
The Rochdale site reflects the reuse of historic civic buildings for contemporary public administration, blending heritage architecture with modern government functions. Images such as this are frequently used editorially to illustrate stories relating to justice policy, legal reform, court accessibility, public service delivery and the operation of the UK state.
Photographed in daylight with the official signage clearly legible, the image offers strong editorial value for coverage of law, governance, public administration and the justice system in England and Wales.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDJNFR - Bernard John Bernie Marsden (born 7 May 1951) is an English rock guitarist.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P4JW19 - Lewis's was a chain of British department stores that operated from 1856 to 2010. The owners of Lewis's have gone into administration many times over the years, including 1991. The first store, which opened in Liverpool city centre, became the flagship of the chain of stores operating under the Lewis's name. Several stores in the chain were bought in 1991 by the company Owen Owen and continued to operate under the Lewis's brand name for several years, but after the closure of the Manchester store in 2001, only the original Liverpool store continued to trade under the Lewis's name. This store was sold in 2007 to the Vergo Retail Ltd and closed in 2010.
The first Lewis's was opened in 1856 in Liverpool by entrepreneur David Lewis, as a men's and boys' clothing store, mostly manufacturing his own stock. In 1864, Lewis's branched out into women's clothing. In the 1870s, the store expanded and added departments, including shoes in 1874, and tobacco in 1879. Also in 1879, Lewis's opened one of the world's first 'Christmas grottoes' in Lewis's Bon March??, Church Street, Liverpool. It was named 'Christmas Fairyland'. His motto was Friends of the People, and he intended the shopping experience to be inclusive
The first Lewis's outside Liverpool opened in nearby Manchester in 1877. Another store was opened, at the suggestion of Joseph Chamberlain, on the new Corporation Street in Birmingham in 1885. The Manchester store included a full scale ballroom on the fifth floor, which was also used for exhibitions. Buying offices were also located on the fifth floor until a takeover by Liverpool-based competitor Owen Owen

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D9466J - The King's became famous for being a venue belonging to the theatre empire Howard & Wyndham. The theatre was originally commissioned by the Edinburgh Building Company Ltd, chaired by Robert C. Buchanan. The King's was built as a rival to the successful Royal Lyceum Theatre, which had been established for over twenty years. Buchanan was experienced in the industry as he already managed a large number of provincial variety theatres, however this was his most ambitious project yet.
The foundation stone was laid on 18 August 1906 by Andrew Carnegie, with copies of the current newspaper and coins buried underneath. During construction the owners experienced financial troubles being unable to pay the final costs to the contractor William Stewart Cruikshank and to the architects, surveyors and lawyers, at which stage the operating rights were transferred to a new King's Theatre Company, of which Cruikshank was a major shareholder. Buchanan was managing director and he took on the day-to-day running of the King's, with Cruikshank`s son A. Stewart Cruikshank as manager. An attempt to sell the theatre to Howard & Wyndham Ltd chaired by Michael Simons, and therefore clear the debts, failed and the Cruikshank family decided to run it themselves with A Stewart Cruikshank becoming managing director in June 1908
The theatre is home to Edinburgh's mainstream annual pantomime, which is produced by Qdos Entertainment. The theatre is now run by the Capital Theatres which also controls the Festival Theatre. The theatre is also an important venue over the Festival period. Plans are now underway for a new refurbishment scheme to bring the theatre up to modern day standards
The theatre's interior and exterior were designed separately. James Davidson designed the building itself. The interior of the King's was designed by JD Swanston

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDJNJ6 - Bernard John Bernie Marsden (born 7 May 1951) is an English rock guitarist.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NCX0YG - The Beano (formerly The Beano Comic, also known as Beano) is a British anthology comic magazine created by Scottish publishing company DC Thomson. Its first issue was published on 30 July 1938,[1] and it became the world's longest-running comic issued weekly in 2018, publishing its 4000th issue in August 2019.[2] Popular and well-known comic strips and characters include Dennis the Menace, Minnie the Minx, The Bash Street Kids, Roger the Dodger, Billy Whizz, Lord Snooty and His Pals, Ivy the Terrible, General Jumbo, Jonah, and Biffo the Bear.
The Beano was planned as a pioneering children's magazine that contained mostly comic strips, in the style of American newspaper gag-a-days, as opposed to the more text story based Story papers that were immensely popular before the Second World War. In the present, its legacy is its misbehaving characters, escapist tales and anarchic humour with an audience of all ages. Beano is a multimedia franchise with spin-off books and Christmas annuals, a website, theme park rides, games, cartoon adaptations, and a production company.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHB6PT - Born Meshe David Osinsky and a Lithuanian Jew in Kurkliai, Kaunas province, he came alone to the UK in 1900 to escape the Russian pogroms.
Burton's terracotta was usually supplied by the Middleton Fireclay Co. of Leeds
