Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PK7XBY - Charles Lutyens's Crucifixion recently installed at Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral
By Marianna Lutyens
A 15-ft high, wood and steel sculpture of a crucifixion by Charles Lutyens, first seen in his exhibition of work, Being in the World, at St Paul's Church, Bow Common, London has recently been installed in Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral.
Called Outraged Christ, this was a spontaneous work it wasn't commissioned created intermittently over a number of years. With the intent of having an encounter with this Man' and with the reality of the event taking place, the sculpture was driven by such questions as Who was this Man?, What did He look like? and Why was this crucifixion remembered for 2,000 years over and above the countless other crucifixions that have taken place? It is a moving and powerful image which, in its making, disclosed itself to Charles as an Outraged Christ. Deeply engaged with this extraordinary event, Charles thought, If the resurrection happened, then was it not already inherent in the crucifixion?
The Grade II-listed St Paul's Church, designed by architects Robert Maguire and Keith Murray and consecrated in 1964, was recently voted Best modern church in Great Britain. It also contains the stunning 800-sq ft mosaic mural, also by Charles, called Angels of the Heavenly Host, the largest single artist-created mosaic mural in the British Isles. Asked by the architects to provide a design for this work I said, at the time, Sorry, it is not possible for me to design an angel, angels appear', recalls Charles. But, incredibly, the architects then said, All right, appear us an angel'. Charles recently gave a talk, in situ, for English Heritage about the mural and its making.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG1TXR - A church pebble pool plate displayed inside a church in the village of Heptonstall, Calderdale, West Yorkshire. The shallow bowl contains small stones arranged within a patterned base and is used as a focus for prayer, reflection, and symbolic participation in Christian worship.
Pebble pools are commonly found in churches as interactive devotional objects, inviting visitors and congregants to place stones in the bowl as acts of prayer, remembrance, or contemplation. The practice draws on biblical symbolism of stones as markers of faith, memory, and spiritual journey.
The pebble pool plate is shown set on a wooden table alongside traditional church furnishings, including a cross, candlesticks, and printed prayers, reinforcing the quiet, contemplative atmosphere of the interior space. The arrangement reflects the blending of historic liturgical tradition with more informal, participatory forms of worship found in many modern Anglican churches.
Photographed indoors under natural light, the image documents an everyday aspect of contemporary church life and provides an editorial illustration of Christian ritual, spiritual reflection, and the lived use of religious spaces in rural West Yorkshire.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNN57B - St Mary's Church is an Anglican parish church in Nantwich, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. It has been called the Cathedral of South Cheshire and it is considered by some to be one of the finest medieval churches, not only in Cheshire, but in the whole of England. The architectural writer Raymond Richards described it as one of the great architectural treasures of Cheshire, and Alec Clifton-Taylor included it in his list of outstanding English parish churches.
The building dates from the 14th century, although a number of changes have since been made, particularly a substantial 19th-century restoration by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The church and its octagonal tower are built in red sandstone. Features of the church's interior include the lierne-vaulted ceiling of the choir, the carved stone canopies of the sedilia in the chancel, and the intricately carved wooden canopies over the choirstalls together with the 20 misericords at the back of the stalls. The church is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Macclesfield and the deanery of Nantwich

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPDJJF - St Francis Xavier Church is a Roman Catholic Parish church in the city centre of Hereford, Herefordshire. The neoclassical-style church was built in 1839 and was designated a Grade II* listed building on 10 June 1952. It is in the Hereford Deanery of the Archdiocese of Cardiff.
History
The foundation stone of St Francis Xavier's was laid 19 September 1837 and Queen Victoria sent her personal representative to the ceremony. The church was designed by Charles Day, an architect from Worcester, who also designed St Edmund's Church in Bury St Edmunds for the Jesuits. The building's construction cost over £16,000. It was opened on 7 August 1839, before the restoration of the English Catholic hierarchy in 1850, because of this, the church has no windows, fearing that any would be broken during the early 19th century. The church was built on the site of a chapel used by the Society of Jesus during the reformation, hence it was dedicated to St Francis Xavier, a Jesuit missionary from the 16th century who travelled to eastern and southern Asia. The Jesuits were in charge of the Catholic mission to Hereford from at least 1773 (when it was under the care of Dr John Butler, S.J.) to 1858. In 1858, the Benedictines created Belmont Abbey nearby. The church was handed over to them that year. It remained in their hands until 1954 when it was given over the Archdiocese of Cardiff. In 1992, administration of it reverted to the abbey.
The church contains a relic, the hand of St John Kemble a Catholic martyr, who was executed in nearby Widemarsh Common on 22 August 1679. He was beatified in 1929 by Pope Pius XI and canonized on 25 October 1970 by Pope Paul VI. His feast day is 22 August.
The exterior comprises columns and a frieze made of stucco. There is a dome at the back of the church. The front comprises two fluted Doric columns either side of the entrance. The interior is ornate with a decorated ceiling made of plaster. The church is lit by a lightwell.

It is on Victoria Street in Manchester city centre and is a grade I listed building.
The former parish church was rebuilt in the Perpendicular Gothic style in the years following the foundation of the collegiate body in 1421. Then at the end of the 15th century, James Stanley II (warden 14851506 and later Bishop of Ely 15061515) was responsible for rebuilding the nave and collegiate choir with high clerestory windows
also commissioning the late-medieval wooden internal furnishings, including the pulpitum, choir stalls and the nave roof supported by angels with gilded instruments. The collegiate church became the cathedral of the new Diocese of Manchester in 1847. It was extensively refaced, restored and extended in the Victorian period, and again following bomb damage during World War II. It is one of fifteen Grade I listed buildings in Manchester.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYCHX - A Brief History of St Peter's Parish Church
There has been a church dedicated to St Peter on this site from the early 800s. The earlier building fell into disrepair in the early 1400s and was rebuilt in the Perpendicular style between about 1452 and 1460 by the Abbot of Winchcombe and the townspeople with the encouragement and support of Ralph Boteler, Lord of Sudeley. He arranged for his father and elder brothers to be reburied in the chapel at the east end of the new St Peter's, and provided them with carved effigies. They were also portrayed in the stained glass of the side windows
his sisters and presumably his mother were portrayed in the chapel on the north side. The new church was almost certainly the first here to be provided with seating, as the clergy responded to the challenge of the radical reformist movement of the Lollards with more instructive sermons. Embroidered panels from the new vestments acquired at that time have survived and are displayed in a cabinet in the north aisle.
Not long after this rebuilding the Church entered a period of great turbulence as part of the English Reformation in the reign of Henry VIII (1509 - 1547). The most dramatic change was the suppression of Winchcombe Abbey in 1539, following which all of the Abbey's (and the Abbot's) possessions and income were transferred into lay hands. As the Abbot was also the Rector of St Peter's, this meant much of the income that had financed St Peter's dried up and the church was left impoverished for centuries. At the same time a translation of the Bible into English was introduced into all churches, followed shortly afterwards by the first version of the Book of Common Prayer. Relics and pictures encouraging idolatry' were removed.
Change continued in the reign of Henry VIII's son Edward VI (1547-1553). More info at https://winchcombeparish.org.uk/a-brief-history-of-st-peters-parish-church.php

A great summer track for a Saturday with the sun flooding through my front window.
This is the eleventh track on the compilation 'Melting Pot'. I pass the cafe on the cover of this album most lunchtimes when I go into Northwich. It looks slightly different now after a recent paint &
decoration job. A few years ago I had the pleasure of having some of my framed live shots on the walls there.
The band consists of Northwich lad Tim Burgess (vox), Mark Collins (guitar), Martin Blunt (bass), Tony Rogers (keyboards) and Jon Brookes (drums and percussion). Northwich is the home of the band's own original 'Dead Dead Good Records' label and have inspired many local musicians.
the Charlatans are back in the studio to work on their eleventh album planned for release in August 2010. This also coincides with twentieth anniversary of the band's debut album, Some Friendly. The album is due for re-issue with bonus material, and an extensive UK tour for both the re-issue and new album launch is due to take place to support these releases.
If you have not heard them before, checkout 'Melting Pot' to be rewarded :-)

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HCHP - Buddy Christ is a parody religious icon in the film Dogma. In the film, he is part of a campaign (Catholicism Wow!) to renew the image of (and interest in) the Catholic Church.
Viewing the crucifix image as wholly depressing, the Church, led by Cardinal Glick (George Carlin) decides to retire it, and creates Buddy Christ as a more uplifting image of Jesus Christ. The icon consists of a statue of Jesus, smiling and winking while pointing at onlookers with one hand and giving the thumbs-up sign with the other hand. The Buddy Christ was later produced as an action figure and a bobblehead
