Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3F1P3TT - Passengers gather beneath a large purple Welcome to Oxford Road sign inside Manchester Oxford Road railway station, a busy city-centre transport gateway. People cross the concourse or sit beneath the distinctive timber roof, while Northern and Bee Network branding reflects the station's place within Greater Manchester's public transport system. The scene conveys its everyday importance and infrastructure pressure.
Oxford Road serves universities, hospitals, cultural venues and offices along the Oxford Road Corridor. It also occupies a critical position between Deansgate and Manchester Piccadilly on the Castlefield Corridor, an intensively used section of railway identified as congested infrastructure. Disruption can spread beyond central Manchester because local, regional and inter-city services share limited tracks and platforms.
Network Rail proposals would remodel Oxford Road by replacing five short platforms with three longer ones, improving accessibility and allowing longer trains. The scheme aims to increase capacity and reliability, but major intervention has been discussed for years while funding remains difficult. Earlier Northern Hub plans included additional through platforms at Piccadilly, but these did not progress, reinforcing arguments that Manchester's growth has outpaced investment in its central railway.
The image illustrates a wider transport debate. Supporters argue that incremental alterations may not provide sufficient long-term capacity and that Manchester should examine an underground or tunnelled route through Piccadilly. Advocates say this could separate services, release surface land and support growth, although an underground solution remains a proposal requiring further testing rather than an approved project. The busy concourse and welcome banner capture the contrast between Manchester's confident civic identity and a constrained rail corridor awaiting a durable answer to congestion, accessibility and reliability

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3F0K3K4 - Formula One spectators gather beneath the specially branded Landostand near Stowe Corner at Silverstone Circuit during the British Grand Prix in July 2026. The grandstand and surrounding walls are covered with distinctive fluorescent yellow and black flowing patterns, forming a highly visible celebration of British McLaren driver Lando Norris and his enthusiastic home support. A monumental freestanding LN emblem rises above the crowd, creating a focal point within the busy fan area.
In the centre of the scene, a tall event information board identifies the location as Stowe and directs visitors towards the M&S Mainstage, Vale entertainment area, Drivers Inn, Inner Track and Family Zone. The sign also promotes the wider Silverstone experience, illustrating the scale and variety of attractions now provided around a modern Formula One race weekend. Fans walk between destinations while others rest on the dry grass, sit at wooden picnic tables or pause beside the sign.
McLaren colours are prominent throughout the image. Several spectators wear orange, papaya, black and grey team clothing, while fluorescent Landostand flags line the upper edge of the grandstand. The gathering reflects the extraordinary popularity of Norris among British racing audiences and the strong supporter identity built around his home Grand Prix appearances. Silverstone described the enlarged 2026 installation as a purpose-built grandstand and viewing area designed to accommodate thousands more followers after Norris's memorable 2025 home victory.
The wide editorial view documents far more than a conventional spectator stand. It shows the festival character of contemporary Grand Prix attendance, combining racing, branded environments, live entertainment, merchandising, food, socialising and dedicated driver fan communities. People relax between track sessions beneath a mixture of bright sunshine and broken cloud, surrounded by temporary signage and event infrastructure

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJD0GE - Busy summer street scene outside Bar Pop on Canal Street in Manchester's Gay Village, showing pedestrians, outdoor drinkers and a freestanding poster for evening entertainment beneath dense strings of rainbow Pride bunting. Two young women walk through the foreground while crowds fill the pavement behind them, with tables of seated customers stretching along the canal-side bars and restaurants. Fresh green trees, bare arms, shorts, bright evening-style light and packed alfresco seating all suggest warm weather and the height of the outdoor hospitality season in one of the city's best-known leisure districts.
Bar Pop is one of the established LGBTQ+ venues on Canal Street, a street long associated with Manchester's queer nightlife, drag performance, music, celebration and visitor culture. The scene works as more than a casual crowd shot because it captures several layers of place at once: the social life of the pavement, the commercial side of bars and entertainment, the visual language of Pride through hanging rainbow flags, and the continuing role of Canal Street as a symbol of visible LGBTQ+ identity in a major northern city. The poster board in the foreground adds a useful editorial clue to programmed nightlife and cabaret culture, while the passing footfall shows the area as an active mixed-use destination for tourists, regulars and day-to-day city visitors.
The image has strong editorial and commercial stock value for stories about Manchester Pride, gay nightlife, LGBTQ+ tourism, safe and inclusive social space, hospitality businesses, city-break travel, outdoor drinking, urban leisure, summer events and the changing visitor economy of famous nightlife quarters. It is also a good record of how Canal Street functions in daylight, not only after dark: a walkable public street where identity, entertainment and commerce meet in a highly recognisable setting beside the Rochdale Canal.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EG4BH2 - Warrington Food & Drink Festival on Sunday 17 May 2026, photographed on the lawn and event space beside Warrington Town Hall and Bank Park off Sankey Street. The wide view shows visitors sitting at long outdoor tables, a white marquee, food and drink stalls, trees in fresh spring leaf, blue sky, broken cloud and bright sunshine across the town centre grass. The scene is useful for editorial coverage of local food festivals, free family events, weekend leisure, civic spaces, high street footfall, outdoor dining, independent traders, market stalls, tourism, town centre regeneration, community events and the role of councils, BIDs and cultural partners in bringing people into centres.
The 2026 Warrington Food & Drink Festival was promoted as a two-day free event across Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 May, taking place in Bank Park and the grounds of Warrington Town Hall. Public listings described street food, independent producers, local hospitality businesses, chef demonstrations, workshops, live activity and family entertainment. This image captures the pleasure of the event rather than a single stall: people eating, drinking, chatting and resting in a civic green space, with the red-brick and stone Town Hall visible beyond the marquee.
Warrington Town Hall adds strong heritage context. Originally built in 1750 as Bank Hall for merchant Thomas Patten and later acquired by the council in 1870, the Grade I listed Palladian building remains one of Warrington's best-known civic landmarks. Its grounds, famous for the Golden Gates at the Sankey Street entrance, make a distinctive setting for a modern food and drink festival. The photograph links Georgian civic architecture, public parkland and contemporary placemaking, making it relevant to stories about Warrington, Cheshire events, North West England tourism, local economies, hospitality, cultural programming, public space, community wellbeing and the continuing use of historic town halls as active civic venues.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EDKYJJ - Crowded Platforms 13 and 14 at Manchester Piccadilly railway station, showing passengers boarding, waiting with luggage and moving through the narrow island-platform area used by trains continuing west towards Manchester Oxford Road, Deansgate and destinations across the North West. These are Piccadilly's only through platforms, while platforms 1 to 12 are terminus platforms. Their restricted width, heavy passenger flows and intensive service make this one of the clearest pressure points on Manchester's rail network.
The platforms form the eastern end of the Castlefield Corridor, the twin-track route through Oxford Road and Deansgate. It carries local, regional, inter-city and airport services, with delays spreading across a wider network when trains conflict, dwell too long or arrive out of sequence. Crowding occurs when several services call close together, concentrating passengers around stairs, waiting areas and boarding points.
Network Rail has described Manchester Oxford Road as a key bottleneck and has developed remodelling proposals to improve reliability, accessibility, platform capacity, track layout and signalling. Separate work completed on the southern approach to Piccadilly in 2026 renewed track, points and signalling equipment to reduce disruption, although it did not add through platforms. Longer-term ideas for Platforms 13 and 14 include improved passenger circulation and a possible new bridge, but these remain proposals rather than a completed expansion.
This documentary image illustrates rail congestion, infrastructure constraints, platform crowding, delayed investment and the challenge of increasing capacity through central Manchester. It suits editorial coverage of public transport policy, Northern rail improvement, station redevelopment, commuter journeys, passenger safety and accessibility. Busy train doors, luggage and tightly arranged platform furniture convey the everyday intensity of this important east-west rail corridor

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EFEG29 - A parking payment machine at Warrington Hospital on Lovely Lane, Warrington, Cheshire, photographed outside the hospital building and showing the on-screen prompt for visitors leaving the car park. The image illustrates the everyday pressure on NHS hospital parking at an older, busy urban hospital site, where patients, relatives, carers, staff and contractors all compete for limited spaces close to wards, clinics and emergency services. The black touchscreen terminal includes contactless payment, card reader, PIN pad, coin and receipt slots, and a printed instruction panel, making it useful for editorial coverage of hospital access, patient experience, car parking charges, transport policy and NHS estate constraints. Warrington Hospital is the main acute hospital serving the Warrington area and sits close to residential streets, local roads and public transport routes rather than on a spacious out-of-town campus. The scene is relevant to stories about crowded hospital car parks, rising demand for outpatient and visitor access, disabled parking, blue badge access, pay-on-exit systems, ANPR-controlled parking, contactless payment machines and the wider frustration felt by people trying to reach appointments on time. The photograph can also illustrate the practical cost of visiting hospital, the debate over whether NHS parking fees are fair, and the infrastructure issues created when old hospital sites have to serve modern levels of car use. Visible NHS branding, the Trust identity, the payment terminal, screen interface and brick wall setting give the image a clear documentary link to healthcare administration, hospital travel planning and public sector customer experience in North West England. Bright daylight and hard shadows suggest a clear sunny day, with reflections on the glossy black machine adding a candid, real-world feel.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E42493 - The interior concourse of Warrington Bus stock-photo/gotonysmith-Interchange.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>Interchange is shown with the Travel Information Centre, red upper wall panels, passenger waiting areas, stand entrances and people moving through the transport hub. The image is a useful editorial view of everyday public transport in Warrington town centre, showing commuters, shoppers, school and college users, visitors and local passengers using a modern bus station linked to the Golden Square shopping centre and close to Warrington Central railway station. Warrington Borough Council says it owns and manages the Bus Interchange, which is near Warrington Central rail station, and AccessAble gives the interchange address as Winwick Street, Warrington, WA1 1XW. Warrington's Own Buses says its Travel Shop at Warrington Interchange provides ticket sales, general enquiries, timetables and route information. The photograph is commercially useful for stories about bus services, passenger footfall, local transport, public transport funding, town centre accessibility, route information, timetable advice, integrated transport, transport interchanges and the role of buses in reducing car dependency. It can also illustrate the challenges facing town centres, including commuter patterns, retail access, passenger safety, evening service levels, concessionary travel, fare policy and the practical dependence of many residents on reliable local bus networks. The visible concourse, information office, glass doors, red architectural detailing, stand signage and passengers give the scene strong documentary value for transport policy, municipal bus operation, urban regeneration and local authority infrastructure. As a stock image, it records the inside of a working bus interchange rather than a staged transport scene, making it useful for articles about local and regional mobility, waiting environments, accessibility, customer information, passenger flows and the everyday public spaces that keep a town connected.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EE4M5B - Real ale drinkers crowd the historic Station Buffet Bar on Platform 4 at Stalybridge railway station in Tameside, Greater Manchester. The lively interior is packed with customers standing around the original marble-topped bar, where traditional handpumps dispense changing cask ales, locally brewed beers and real cider. Railway signs, locomotive nameplates, destination boards, clocks, photographs and other memorabilia cover the deep red walls, creating the atmosphere of a working railway museum combined with a popular public house.
The buffet occupies buildings created during the station's reconstruction in 1885 and is one of the few surviving licensed Victorian railway refreshment rooms in England to retain much of its historic character. CAMRA recognises the interior as being of very special national historic interest. Its surviving features include the marble counter, period back fittings, decorative details and adjoining former first-class ladies' waiting room, which was incorporated during an expansion while preserving its ornate ceiling and railway heritage.
The photograph captures the social appeal of real ale culture, with friends, rail passengers, local regulars and visiting beer enthusiasts gathering in a compact and convivial space. Stalybridge is a recognised stop on the TransPennine Real Ale Trail, and the buffet has become a destination in its own right rather than simply somewhere to wait for a train. Its continued popularity shows how historic station pubs can support tourism, local brewing, railway heritage and community life.
Bright brass beer engines, pump clips and polished wood contrast with the crowded bar and densely displayed railway artefacts. This editorial image is suitable for themes involving British pub culture, CAMRA heritage interiors, cask beer, railway tourism, historic station architecture, community pubs, social drinking, industrial history and the preservation of distinctive independent hospitality venues.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T10DPG - Taken on 08 Oct 2023, this photograph shows Warrington town centre makers market, second Sunday each month, held in 2 Time Square, Warrington, Cheshire, England, UK, WA1 2NT. The location is 2 Time Square, Warrington, Cheshire, England, UK, WA1 2NT. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains the vehicle livery, route branding, boarding point and street setting that make the public transport subject specific rather than generic. Warrington's Time Square development and market area are part of the town centre's attempt to combine food, events, independent traders and civic leisure around a modern public square. It would suit editorial use on shopping, retail change, independent traders, high-street survival, tourism, local economies, consumer habits and the visual identity of British town and city centres. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include Makers Market, Time Square, artisan, Warrington, town, centre, markets, market, busy, goods, English, British, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. Because the subject is clearly labelled or visually distinctive, it can also work well in search-led usage where the buyer needs immediate recognition at small web-preview size.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EFEG1J - Busy outdoor seating at the Cookhouse food hall at Warrington Market, photographed in warm weather beside the modern glass frontage of the market building in Time Square, Warrington, Cheshire. The image shows diners, families and groups using the terrace, with parasols, planters, black branded barriers and the large Warrington Market signage visible above the entrance. It is a strong editorial stock image for stories about town centre regeneration, independent food traders, food halls, market culture, hospitality, outdoor dining, summer leisure, evening economy and the changing use of traditional retail spaces. Warrington Market's newer purpose-built building sits between Bridge Street and Time Square, combining a traditional indoor market with a contemporary food and drink offer. The Cookhouse area brings together street-food style kitchens and bars, giving the town centre a social dining space for lunches, meals, weekend visits and informal nights out. The crowded terrace suggests strong footfall and a lively atmosphere, with people eating and drinking in bright daylight under a glazed canopy. Visible details such as the branded Cookhouse barrier, outdoor chairs, planting, parasols and people passing through the wider public space place the scene firmly in a busy urban leisure setting. The photograph is useful for coverage of hospitality recovery, local economic development, high street reinvention, place-making, public realm, independent traders, market halls, casual dining and warm-weather town centre activity in North West England. It can also illustrate how councils and town centres have tried to broaden markets beyond traditional stalls by adding food courts, bars, events, covered terraces and family-friendly dining. The light, clothing and full terrace indicate a mild or warm spring or summer day, with the image carrying an upbeat documentary feel of Warrington town centre being used as a social destination rather than just a shopping area.

King Amenhotep III commissioned numerous statues of himself, especially for his temples in Thebes, then Egypt's capital. His peaceful reign was a time of opulence and outstanding artistic refinement, often displayed on a grand and ambitious scale. The complete sculpture showed him striding. This and a slightly smaller colossus flanked a doorway in the temple of Mut in Karnak. The head of the second statue is also in the British Museum, but the bodies remain in Karnak. A century later the facial features were reworked for King Ramesses II to match his own official 'portrait'. Ramesses appropriated countless statues of royal predecessors

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T35BXM - Victoria station, also known as London Victoria, is a central London railway terminus and connected London Underground station in Victoria, in the City of Westminster, managed by Network Rail. Named after the nearby Victoria Street[4] (itself named after Queen Victoria), the main line station is a terminus of the Brighton Main Line to Gatwick Airport and Brighton and the Chatham Main Line to Ramsgate and Dover via Chatham. From the main lines, trains can connect to the Catford Loop Line, the Dartford Loop Line, and the Oxted line to East Grinstead and Uckfield. Southern operates most commuter and regional services to south London, Sussex and parts of east Surrey, while Southeastern operates trains to south-east London and Kent, alongside limited services operated by Thameslink. Gatwick Express trains run direct to Gatwick. The Underground station is on the Circle and District lines between Sloane Square and St James's Park, and the Victoria line between Pimlico and Green Park. The area around the station is an important interchange for other forms of transport: a local bus station is in the forecourt and Victoria Coach Station is nearby.
Victoria was built to serve both the Brighton and Chatham Main Lines, and has always had a split feel of being two separate stations. The Brighton station opened in 1860 with the Chatham station following two years later. It replaced a temporary terminus at Pimlico, and construction involved building the Grosvenor Bridge over the River Thames. It became immediately popular as a London terminus, causing delays and requiring upgrades and rebuilding. It was well known for luxury Pullman train services and continental boat-train trips, and became a focal point for soldiers during World War I.
Like other London termini, steam trains were phased out of Victoria by the 1960s, to be replaced by suburban electric and diesel multiple-unit services
all services from the station are currently operated using electric multiple units

For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include Liverpool, city, tourism, attraction, Mathew St, Cavern Quarter, cavern, crowds, busy, centre, Merseyside, tourist, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling.

Bettys Café Tea Rooms are traditional tea rooms serving traditional meals with influences from both Switzerland and Yorkshire. Taylors of Harrogate was a family tea and coffee merchant company, founded in 1886, which blended Yorkshire Tea and Taylors of Harrogate Coffee
the owners of Bettys acquired Taylors in 1962. The chairman of the company is Clare Morrow, a former journalist.
Yorkshire Tea was introduced by Charles Edward Taylor and his brother in 1883, when they created their company CE Taylor & Co., whose name was later shortened to Taylor's. The brothers later opened Tea Kiosks in the Yorkshire towns of Harrogate and Ilkley, and in 1962, local tea room competitor Betty's took over Taylor's, renamed it Taylors of Harrogate and formed Bettys and Taylors Group, which is still owned by the family of Fredrick Belmont, who founded Betty's Tea Rooms. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RBXAM5 - Waterloo station also known as London Waterloo, is a central London terminus on the National Rail network in the United Kingdom, in the Waterloo area of the London Borough of Lambeth. It is connected to a London Underground station of the same name and is adjacent to Waterloo East station on the South Eastern Main Line. The station is the terminus of the South West Main Line to Weymouth via Southampton, the West of England main line to Exeter via Salisbury, the Portsmouth Direct line to Portsmouth Harbour which connects with ferry services to the Isle of Wight, and several commuter services around west and south-west London, Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire.
The station was opened in 1848 by the London and South Western Railway, and it replaced the earlier Nine Elms as it was closer to the West End. It was never designed to be a terminus, as the original intention was to continue the line towards the City of London, and consequently the station developed in a haphazard fashion, leading to difficulty finding the correct platform. The station was rebuilt in the early 20th century, opening in 1922, and included the Victory Arch over the main entrance, which commemorated World War I. Waterloo was the last London terminus to provide steam-powered services, which ended in 1967. The station was the London terminus for Eurostar international trains from 1994 until 2007, when they were transferred to St. Pancras.
Waterloo is the busiest railway station in the UK, handling 41 million passengers in the year to March 2022. It is also the UK's largest station in terms of floor space and has the greatest number of platforms.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39XX3 - Staying safe from terrorism - More at https://www.met.police.uk/advice/advice-and-information/t/terrorism-in-the-uk/staying-safe-from-terrorism/
The threat of terrorism in the UK is real, but with a little knowledge you can increase your safety and help protect yourself against a terrorist attack. Find out below how to stay safe when you're out and about and how to report any suspicious behaviour that could be connected to terrorism.
What you can do
Communities defeat terrorism. We need the help and support of individuals, businesses and communities across the UK to remain alert and maintain the safety and security of those places where we live, work and socialise.
If you see or hear something unusual or suspicious, trust your instincts and ACT (Action Counters Terrorism) by reporting possible terrorist activity in confidence. Any piece of information could be important, so it's better to be safe and report anything you see. You can help the police prevent terrorism and save lives.
Crowded places, events, public transport, and iconic locations throughout the country are some examples of locations that could be potential targets for terrorists.
You're familiar with your workplace and surrounding area, so you're ideally placed to spot when something is amiss. In this period of heightened alert, it is vital to remain vigilant, trust your instincts and report possible terrorist activity to the police.
Look for anything that seems out of the ordinary, such as:
people in stationary vehicles watching a building or structure
vehicles moving slowly near public buildings, structures or bridges, or parked in suspicious circumstances
people using recording equipment, including camera phones, or seen making notes or sketches of security details
someone suspicious paying close attention to specific entry and exit points, stairwells, hallways or fire escapes
people loitering at or near premises for long periods and watching staff, visitors and deliveries for no reason

It is the terminus of the West Anglia Main Line to Cambridge, the Great Eastern Main Line to Norwich, commuter trains serving east London and destinations in the East of England, and the Stansted Express service to Stansted Airport.
The station opened in 1874, as a replacement for Bishopsgate station as the Great Eastern Railway's main London terminus. By 1895, it had the most platforms of any London terminal station. During the First World War, an air raid on the station killed 16 on site, and 146 others in nearby areas. In the build-up to the Second World War, the station served as the entry point for thousands of child refugees arriving in London as part of the Kindertransport rescue mission. The station was damaged by the 1993 Bishopsgate bombing and, during the 7 July 2005 bombing, seven passengers were killed when a bomb exploded aboard an Underground train, just after it had departed from Liverpool Street. New platforms for the Elizabeth line opened in 2022 as part of the Crossrail project.
Liverpool Street was built as a dual-level station, with provision for the Underground. A tube station opened in 1875 for the Metropolitan Railway
the tube station is now served by the Central, Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines. It is in fare zone 1 and is managed directly by Network Rail.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P4JWWP - Bold Street is a street in Liverpool, England. It is known for its cafés and for the Church of St Luke, which is situated at the top end. The bottom end leads into the area surrounding Clayton Square, which is part of the main retail district of central Liverpool. The bottom end contains more shops which are chain stores. Liverpool Central, a major hub of the Merseyrail rapid transit/commuter rail network, can also be accessed via an entrance on Bold Street next to The Lyceum, a post office which was Europe's first lending library. The middle area contains bars as it leads towards Concert Square, a square containing clubs and bars, and the top end contains more independent shops and cafes. For the most part, Bold Street is pedestrianised and cars do not have access.
History
Bold Street was originally laid out as a ropewalk
a long thin area of land used in the manufacture of rope (the area is now known as 'Rope Walks'). They used to measure the rope from the top of Bold Street to the bottom because it was the standard length needed for sailing ships. It was laid out for residences around 1780 and named after Jonas Bold, a noted sugar trader and banker. In 1802 Bold became Mayor of Liverpool.
Merchants that worked on the docks needed houses close by. Therefore, houses were constructed in Hanover Street first, followed by Duke Street and then Bold Street. The fields that were in the area earlier were also developed quickly into houses. Although there had been port-related industrial activity in the area, with roperies occupying the site of what is now Bold Street to supply the sailing ships, this intensified along with a demand for residential properties so that the merchants could be located close to their business interests.
Pavement Art from the Bold Street Festival
Physician Jonathan Binns, an 18th-century abolitionist, was among those building a home on the street

a long thin area of land used in the manufacture of rope (the area is now known as 'Rope Walks').

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KG3PMF - Customers drink, dine and socialise during a busy evening inside the Marble Arch Inn at 73 Rochdale Road, Manchester, one of the city's best-known historic public houses. Warm artificial light from hanging chandeliers illuminates the long room, while deep red curtains frame the tall windows and groups of patrons occupy tables on both sides of the narrow interior. The scene conveys the lively, relaxed character of a traditional Manchester boozer, with real ale drinkers talking over pints in a convivial setting at dusk.
The elaborate interior is a defining feature of the Grade II listed building. Glazed brick walls, a richly decorated ceramic frieze and the distinctive barrel-vaulted tiled ceiling create an unusually ornate drinking space. Decorative brackets, patterned surfaces, framed pictures, timber fittings and upholstered seating add to the preserved Victorian character. The pub is also renowned for its sloping mosaic floor, which descends towards the bar and forms part of the building's celebrated historic fabric.
Constructed in 1888 to designs by Manchester architects Darbyshire and Smith, the premises originally served as a show-house associated with McKenna's Brewery. The building was formally listed in 1988 in recognition of its architectural and historic interest. Its surviving tiled scheme is regarded as an important example of late nineteenth-century public-house design and helps make the venue a destination for architectural enthusiasts, real ale drinkers and visitors exploring Manchester's pub heritage.
The Marble Arch later became closely associated with Marble Brewery, founded at the rear of the premises in 1997. Brewing subsequently moved to larger facilities in Salford, although the Rochdale Road pub remains the spiritual home and flagship venue for Marble beers. The photograph documents a busy evening within a much-loved independent establishment where preserved Victorian craftsmanship, craft brewing culture, food and everyday Mancunian social

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JYTBD0 - Many of the buildings in the market place were demolished in the Victorian era to make way for road improvements and the rest were destroyed in the Manchester Blitz in 1940, leaving the Old Shambles as one of the few pre-19th century buildings, and The Wellington Inn as the only surviving Tudor building in Manchester City Centre. The buildings were both designated as Grade II listed buildings in 1952.
The Old Wellington Inn is a half-timbered pub in Manchester city centre, England, United Kingdom. It is part of Shambles Square, which was created in 1999, and is near Manchester Cathedral. It is a Grade II listed building
The oldest building of its kind in Manchester, the Old Wellington Inn was built in 1552 next to the market square which led off what is now Market Street, in what was known as the Shambles. In 1554 part of it became a draper's shop, owned by the Byrom family, and the writer John Byrom was born there in 1692. The building had a third storey added to it in the 17th century. In 1830 the building became a licensed public house, known as the Vintners Arms, and later the Kenyon Vaults. By 1865, the ground floor of the building was known as the Wellington Inn, while the upper floors were used by makers of mathematical and optical instruments. Later, in 1897, the upper floors were used as a fishing tackle shop, known as Ye Olde Fyshing Tackle Shoppe.
In the 1970s the Old Shambles was underpinned with a concrete raft and raised by 1.4 metres (55 in) designed by draughtsman Fred Kennedy, to fit in with the development of 'The Market Place Centre.' This completely separate development was designed to provide a single level walk, from the Arndale Centre
[5] to which it was connected by a glass bridge over Corporation Street, and then on to Deansgate. The Inn was reopened in 1981. But what was not appreciated by most was the extent to which the building had been changed.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AE02F7 - King's Cross railway station, also known as London King's Cross, is a passenger railway terminus in the London Borough of Camden, on the edge of Central London. It is in the London station group, one of the busiest stations in the United Kingdom and the southern terminus of the East Coast Main Line to North East England and Scotland. Adjacent to King's Cross station is St Pancras International, the London terminus for Eurostar services to continental Europe. Beneath both main line stations is King's Cross St Pancras tube station on the London Underground
combined they form one of the country's largest transport hubs.
The station was opened in Kings Cross in 1852 by the Great Northern Railway on the northern edge of Central London to accommodate the East Coast Main Line. Famous services were the Flying Scotsman and locomotives such as Mallard.
The £500 million restoration plan announced by Network Rail in 2005 was approved by Camden London Borough Council in 2007. It involved restoring and reglazing the original arched train shed roof and removing the 1972 extension at the front of the station and replacing it with an open-air plaza

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ABY94H - Cannon Street station, also known as London Cannon Street, is a central London railway terminus and connected London Underground station in Travelcard zone 1 located on Cannon Street in the City of London and managed by Network Rail. It is one of two London termini of the South Eastern main line, the other being Charing Cross, while the Underground station is on the Circle and District lines, between Monument and Mansion House. The station runs services by Southeastern, mostly catering for commuters in southeast London and Kent, with occasional services further into the latter.
The station was built on a site of the medieval steelyard, the trading base in England of the Hanseatic League. It was built by the South Eastern Railway in order to have a railway terminal in the City and compete with the rival London, Chatham and Dover Railway. This required a new bridge across the River Thames, which was constructed between 1863 and 1866. The station was initially a stop for continental services from Charing Cross.
Planning permission was granted in March 2007 to replace the Poulson building, with a new air rights building designed by Foggo Associates. Hines, the US developer, led a £360 million project involving the demolition of Poulson's office block, replacing it with a mixed-use development containing more than 400,000 sq ft (37,000 m2) of office space alongside 17,000 sq ft (1,600 m2) of station retail space. The redevelopment was part of a larger regeneration programme undertaken by Network Rail to modernise and unlock the commercial potential of the main London termini
Euston and London Bridge were also redeveloped. Network Rail's director of commercial property said that the finished station would be less congested and more accessible for passengers.[46] Cannon Street won the award for Major Station of the Year at the 2013 National Rail Awards

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ABY9AH - Westfield Stratford City is a shopping centre in Stratford, London, which opened on 13 September 2011. With a total retail floor area of 1,910,000 square feet (177,000 m2), it is one of the largest urban shopping centres in Europe, and the 4th-largest shopping centre in the UK by retail space, behind Westfield London, the MetroCentre, and the Trafford Centre. Taking the surrounding shopping area into account, it is the second largest urban shopping centre in the European Union.
Originally fully owned by the Westfield Group, in November 2010 ABP Pension Fund and CPP Investment Board each purchased a 25% shareholding, with Westfield retaining 50%. Westfield's holding is now owned by Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield following Unibail-Rodamco's acquisition of Westfield Corporation in 2018.
Westfield Stratford City is adjacent to the London Olympic Park, International Quarter London, East Village, Stratford Regional and Stratford International stations. The shopping centre is part of a large multi-purpose development project called Stratford City. It is promoted as contributing significantly to the local economy, with the creation of up to 10,000 permanent jobs including 2,001 going to local people. However, there are counter-reports of significant harm to other local businesses due to the preponderance of chain stores.
The site was formerly occupied by Stratford Works and Locomotive Depot.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT2XR - The Gateway Plus (previously known as Birmingham Gateway) project was a redevelopment scheme that regenerated Birmingham New Street railway station and the Pallasades Shopping Centre above it in Birmingham, England. It finished in September 2015. The project aimed to enhance the station to cope with increased passenger numbers as well as expected future growth in traffic, but did not alter the train capacity of the station. In 2008, the station handled passenger numbers far in excess of the capacity of its existing design. The current station and Pallasades shopping centre were completed in 1967 and have become the subject of criticism for the congestion of the station and shabbiness of the shopping centre and parts of the station. It is part of the Big City Plan.
Birmingham New Street is the largest and busiest of the three main railway stations in the Birmingham City Centre, England. It is a central hub of the British railway system. It is a major destination for Avanti West Coast services from London Euston, Glasgow Central and Edinburgh Waverley via the West Coast Main Line, and the national hub of the CrossCountry network the most extensive in Britain, with long-distance trains serving destinations from Aberdeen to Penzance. It is also a major hub for local and suburban services within the West Midlands, including those on the Cross City Line between Lichfield Trent Valley, Redditch, and Bromsgrove, and the Chase Line to Walsall and Rugeley Trent Valley.
The station is named after New Street, which runs parallel to the station, although the station has never had a direct entrance to New Street except via the Grand Central shopping centre. Historically the main entrance to the station was on Stephenson Street, just off New Street. Today the station has entrances on Stephenson Street, Smallbrook Queensway, Hill Street and Navigation Street

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHB6TA - Euston is a London Underground station served by the Victoria line and both central branches of the Northern line. It directly connects with Euston main line station above it. The station is in Travelcard Zone 1.
Euston was constructed as two separate underground stations. Three of the four Northern line platforms date from the station's opening in 1907. The fourth Northern line platform and the two Victoria line platforms were constructed in the 1960s when the station was significantly altered to accommodate the Victoria line. Plans for High Speed 2 and Crossrail 2 both include proposals to modify the station to provide interchanges with the new services.
On the Northern line's Bank branch the station is between Camden Town and King's Cross St Pancras. On the Charing Cross branch it is between Mornington Crescent and Warren Street. On the Victoria line it is between Warren Street and King's Cross St. Pancras. The station is near Euston Square station allowing connections at street level to the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy MM99TA - In 2002, Virgin Trains in the UK began operating custom-designed Pendolino trains known as the Class 390 on its West Coast Main Line (WCML) franchise. The 53 9-car trains were constructed by Alstom and are leased by Virgin Trains from Angel Trains.
Owing to the failure of the WCML upgrade to provide in-cab signalling, these units are limited in service to 125 mph (200 km/h) operation rather than their 140 mph (225 km/h) design speed. In 2006, Virgin Trains announced that, over the following three years, they would be examining the possibility of running the trains at 135 mph (215 km/h) through the Trent Valley as part of their new WCML Franchise Proposal.
An Alstom Class 390 Pendolino in Birmingham
The Class 390 Pendolino were maintained by Alstom (West Coast Traincare) under contract to Virgin Trains until 2012. The main maintenance locations are Wembley, Midlands (Oxley, Wolverhampton), Manchester (Longsight) and Glasgow (Polmadie), as well as Liverpool (for minor work only) and several Traincare Points along the line of route (such as Euston and Carlisle). Headquarters for West Coast Traincare moved from the former Metro-Cammell factory at Washwood Heath in Birmingham upon its closure in November 2005 to Manchester Longsight depot with some functions being based at a new office facility at Oxley depot.
In 2008 DfT announced that 31 of the existing 9-car sets would be lengthened to 11 cars to increase capacity. Four new 11-car sets were also to be built. Angel Trains ordered the vehicles from Alstom in September 2008. Virgin Rail Projects has been selected to introduce the new trains. The longer units would require major infrastructure changes to allow stations and depots to accommodate the 11-car units.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PM6261 - Belfast Bellybusters food stall inside St George's Market, Belfast, with customers standing at the counter and signs advertising hearty breakfast rolls. The large cream banner reads Belfast Bellybusters and There's fast food & then there's good food , while the front menu board promotes The Bust'R with two bacon, two sausages, egg and black pudding for £5. The photograph captures the everyday bustle of a covered city market, with café tables, hot drinks, counter service, cooking equipment, bread rolls and traders working beneath the market roof. St George's Market is one of Belfast's best-known visitor attractions and a working food, craft and produce market, so this scene is useful for editorial stories about Northern Irish street food, local independent traders, weekend markets, city-break tourism, breakfast culture, indoor markets, small businesses, hospitality and affordable eating out. The bacon and sausage baps, black pudding and cooked breakfast wording give the image a strong food photography angle, while the visible Belfast branding anchors it firmly in place. The composition also illustrates traditional market trading adapting to contemporary casual dining, with shoppers and tourists able to buy hot food, sit at informal tables and enjoy the atmosphere of a historic Victorian market building. It would suit features on Belfast's food scene, UK and Ireland market halls, artisan and casual food stalls, local economies, visitor attractions, weekend leisure, independent catering, public markets, city centre regeneration, heritage buildings used for modern retail, and the social role of markets as places to eat, meet, browse and support local enterprise. The indoor lighting, visible signage and customers in practical casual clothing suggest a typical market trading day rather than a staged restaurant scene, giving the image an authentic documentary feel.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PM6264 - St George's Market is the last surviving Victorian covered market in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It is located on May Street, close to the River Lagan and the Waterfront Hall. Belfast Corporation (now Belfast City Council) commissioned the building of St George's Market, which was built in three phases between 1890 and 1896. Before 1890 St George's Market was an open market and most likely contained a slaughterhouse and a meat market. Today it is a thriving market with 300 traders, crafters, musicians, and food vendors.
By the 1980s, St George's Market had developed into a general market and it became the last of Belfast's thriving Victorian markets. The market was pressured with increased maintenance costs and changes to hygiene regulations, among other issues, and Belfast City Council decided to source other uses for the listed building. A campaign backed by the city council, traders and the general public resulted in a Heritage Lottery Fund-backed £3.5 million refurbishment programme assisted by the Environment and Heritage Agency. Brick and stonework that had badly deteriorated was returned to good condition, and special bricks were produced in England to match the original unusually sized bricks. The fully renovated St George's Market reopened its doors on 14 May 1999.
St George's Market is primarily used as a market, however a number of other events are held at the site. These range from food festivals, art initiatives, exhibitions, charity launches, fashion shoots and live music events. Local software company Northbrook Technology hold their annual Staff Christmas Party at the venue.
The market has won a number of recent awards, including being voted Best Large Indoor Market 2014 and as one of the UK's top five markets by the National Association of British Market Authorities in 2006, and winning third place in the best markets category of the Observer Food Monthly/Waitrose Awards in 2004

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7NC4W - München Hauptbahnhof (German for Munich main railway station) is the main railway station in the city of Munich, Germany. It is one of the three long distance stations in Munich, the others being München-Pasing and München Ost. München Hauptbahnhof sees about 450,000 passengers a day, which puts it on par with other large stations in Germany, such as Hamburg Hauptbahnhof and Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof.
It is one of 21 stations classified by Deutsche Bahn as a category 1 station. The mainline station is a terminal station with 32 platforms. The subterranean S-Bahn with 2 platforms and U-Bahn stations with 6 platforms are through stations.
The first Munich station was built about 800 metres to the west in 1839. A station at the current site was opened in 1849 and it has been rebuilt numerous times, including to replace the main station building, which was badly damaged during World War II.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EM2JMF - Summer drinkers, tourists and local customers gathered outside The Dame Tavern on Dame Court in Dublin 2, a short pedestrian lane close to Dame Street, Temple Bar, Dublin Castle, City Hall and the south city centre nightlife area. The photograph captures the bright red pub frontage, striped outdoor umbrellas, standing groups, passing pedestrians and warm sunlight falling across the narrow street, giving a lively impression of Dublin's outdoor hospitality culture during a busy fine-weather day. The Dame Tavern is a compact city-centre bar at 18 Dame Court, known as a snug and popular pub serving Guinness, drinks and music in a location that attracts office workers, shoppers, theatre-goers, weekend visitors and European city-break tourists. The image is useful for editorial coverage of Irish pubs, Dublin tourism, short breaks, hospitality, licensed premises, socialising, summer leisure, pub culture, nightlife, consumer spending, city-centre footfall and the visitor economy. The visible building signage, crowd behaviour and central location make it suitable for features about relaxed outdoor drinking, pedestrian-friendly streets, pub-led regeneration, independent bars, tourism pressure, licensing, hospitality staffing, weekend travel and the continuing appeal of traditional Irish pubs as informal public meeting places. It also works for stories about EU city breaks, low-cost flights, Dublin hotel stays, pub crawls, food and drink tourism, social life after work, young adult leisure and the balance between residents, visitors and late-night venues in compact historic streets. The scene appears to be photographed in strong summer daylight, with blue sky brightness reflected on facades and people wearing light warm-weather clothing. No individual is the main subject, so the emphasis remains on place, atmosphere, tourism, urban leisure and the everyday street-level economy around one of Dublin's best-known central pub clusters

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RW3WY3 - Tourists gather in the Egyptian Sculpture gallery at the British Museum in Bloomsbury, London, around the colossal granite head of King Amenhotep III, one of the museum's major ancient Egyptian exhibits. The monumental head comes from a red granite statue of the 18th Dynasty pharaoh Amenhotep III and is displayed in Room 4 among large sculptures, architectural fragments and royal monuments from ancient Egypt and Sudan. The British Museum collection record describes the object as a head from a monumental red granite statue of Amenhotep III, while the museum's gallery guide highlights it as part of the Egyptian sculpture rooms. Amenhotep III ruled during the New Kingdom, a period associated with imperial wealth, temple building, royal portraiture and monumental stone sculpture. This image is useful for editorial coverage of museum tourism, ancient Egypt, Egyptology, cultural heritage, archaeology, London attractions, school trips, international visitors, public collections and debates about colonial-era collecting and the display of world heritage in British institutions. The photograph shows the scale of the sculpture in relation to modern visitors, with the high coffered ceiling, pale gallery walls, glass cases and crowded room giving a clear documentary view of a busy public museum interior. It can illustrate travel features about the British Museum, Bloomsbury, Great Russell Street, Ancient Egypt rooms, London sightseeing, heritage education, family visits, guided tours and blockbuster museum collections. The scene also has wider value for stories about repatriation debates, visitor numbers, museum interpretation, world cultures, pharaonic art, granite carving, New Kingdom kingship and the enduring fascination with Egyptian archaeology. The crowded summer-like gallery atmosphere suggests a busy visitor day in central London, with tourists using the sculpture as a focal point for photographs, learning and cultural discovery.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P2X7YP - The Borders Railway connects the city of Edinburgh with Galashiels and Tweedbank in the Scottish Borders. The railway follows most of the alignment of the northern part of the Waverley Route, a former double-track line in southern Scotland and northern England that ran between Edinburgh and Carlisle. That line was controversially closed in 1969, as part of the Beeching cuts, leaving the Borders region without any access to the National Rail network. Following the closure, a campaign to revive the Waverley Route emerged. Discussion on reopening the northern part of the line came to a head during the early 2000s. Following deliberations in the Scottish Parliament, the Waverley Railway (Scotland) Act 2006 received Royal Assent in June 2006. The project was renamed the Borders Railway in August 2008, and building works began in November 2012. Passenger service on the line began on 6 September 2015, whilst an official opening by Queen Elizabeth II took place on 9 September.
The railway was rebuilt as a non-electrified, largely single-track line. Several surviving Waverley Route structures, including viaducts and tunnels, were rehabilitated and reused for the reopened railway. Passenger services run half-hourly on weekdays until 20:00, and hourly until 23:54 and on Sundays. The timetable also allows charter train promoters to run special excursion services, and for the weeks following the line opening scheduled steam trains were run.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T10DPW - Taken on 08 Oct 2023, this photograph shows Warrington town centre makers market, second Sunday each month, held in 2 Time Square, Warrington, Cheshire, England, UK, WA1 2NT. This makes the image useful for comparison pieces, then-and-now features, local news, regeneration stories and plain-English explainers aimed at a general audience.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AEDHTY - Metrolink (also known as Manchester Metrolink) is a tram/light rail system in Greater Manchester, England. The network has 93 stops along 62 miles (100 km) of standard-gauge track,[9] making it the most extensive light rail system in the United Kingdom. Metrolink is owned by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and operated and maintained under contract by a Keolis/Amey consortium. In 2018/19, 43.7 million passenger journeys were made on the system.
The network consists of seven lines which radiate from Manchester city centre to termini at Altrincham, Ashton-under-Lyne, Bury, East Didsbury, Eccles, Manchester Airport, MediaCityUK (Salford Quays) and Rochdale via Oldham - as well as to the Trafford Centre in the near future, as part of the Trafford Park Line set to be opened in 2020/21. It consists of a mixture of on-street track shared with other traffic
reserved track sections, segregated from other traffic, and converted former railway lines. It is operated by a fleet of Bombardier Flexity Swift M5000s.
With increased tram traffic brought about by the expansion of the Metrolink network, it became necessary to build a new route across Manchester City Centre to alleviate congestion and improve capacity.
Known as the Second City Crossing (or 2CC), the project involved laying 0.8 miles (1.3 km) of tram tracks from St Peter's Square tram stop via Princess Street, Albert Square, Cross Street and Corporation Street to rejoin the original Metrolink line just before Victoria station. One new tram stop was built at Exchange Square. The project also involved re-ordering St Peter's Square and re-siting the Cenotaph to accommodate an enlarged tram interchange and junction. Construction began in 2014, and the 2CC route opened fully in February 2017

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P307GH - Altrincham successful retail town market (similar to Borough Market), Trafford Council, Greater Manchester, North West England, UK works as a grounded stock photograph because the subject is specific, legible and connected to wider social, economic or cultural themes. Altrincham Market has become a frequently cited example of town-centre revival, using food, independent traders and a social market-hall atmosphere to pull people back into a traditional retail centre. The scene supports coverage of high-street regeneration, market-led placemaking, hospitality, local enterprise, weekend leisure and the search for alternatives to chain-store decline. The location detail, Manchester, Altrincham, Borough Market, strengthens searches for regional features, travel pages, local-history pieces and news use where a named place matters. Relevant editorial themes include indoor market, retail market, independent traders and food hall, with each theme rooted in the visible subject, place or activity. The scene has practical value for features needing authentic British or international street-level evidence, especially where policy, culture, business, tourism or social change is easier to explain through one clear example.
