Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM98YA - A lively winter dusk street scene outside the Marks & Spencer department store on Market Street in Manchester city centre. The photograph is taken from a low, slightly angled viewpoint that emphasises the building's sweeping curved glass frontage and the large, readable MARKS & SPENCER signage wrapping around the corner. Warm interior lighting spills onto the pavement while the sky holds a deepening blue, creating a classic blue hour contrast between cool outdoor tones and the bright retail glow inside.
In the foreground, dense crowds of shoppers in winter coats stream past the entrance, queue, pause, and regroup, capturing the real feel of Manchester's busiest shopping street at peak footfall. The mix of faces and movement gives the image strong editorial value for stories about city-centre retail, consumer behaviour, seasonal shopping, and the everyday rhythm of the UK high street. The composition also works as a clear location identifier, balancing the recognisable brand frontage with the wider public realm, street lighting, and the bustle of an urban evening.
The scene suits a wide range of uses, from travel and lifestyle coverage of Manchester as a city-break destination, to business and economic pieces on retail performance, footfall, and the continuing role of large department stores in central shopping districts. The winter timing is communicated through the low light, bundled clothing, and the after-work atmosphere, making it a versatile image for headlines and general illustration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CKYR4E - A late-summer street scene in the Paddington Basin area of West London showing pedestrians walking past a line of bright pink wayfinding signs marked Carnival, directing people towards Notting Hill Carnival. The image was taken in August under strong daylight, clear blue skies and hot, dry weather, conditions typical of a peak UK summer period.
People are dressed in light clothing suitable for warm temperatures, reinforcing the sense of heat and seasonal conditions. The temporary signage highlights how London's public realm and transport-adjacent spaces are adapted each year to manage the movement of large crowds attending one of Europe's largest street festivals.
The photograph illustrates the interaction between urban infrastructure, seasonal weather and major cultural events, and is well suited for editorial use covering topics such as summer festivals, crowd movement, urban planning, transport access, heatwaves, and the logistical impact of large-scale events in London.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CKYR4K - A rear view of a Police Liaison Officer wearing a high-visibility vest marked Police Liaison Officer while overseeing crowd movement during Notting Hill Carnival in West London. The image was taken in late summer, with strong daylight, blue sky and dry conditions typical of August weather in London.
In the background, large crowds of carnival-goers, event stewards and vehicles are visible, illustrating the scale and complexity of managing one of Europe's largest street festivals. Police liaison officers are deployed to act as a bridge between the police, event organisers and the public, focusing on communication, reassurance and de-escalation rather than enforcement.
Notting Hill Carnival is a major cultural event celebrating Caribbean heritage and London's diversity, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Images such as this are commonly used editorially to illustrate themes of public order, community policing, major event management, urban safety and multicultural life in the UK capital.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAXHJ - This image shows the interior of Campfield Studios, located on Liverpool Road in the Castlefield area of Manchester city centre. The building forms part of the historic Campfield Market Hall complex, a substantial Victorian iron-and-glass structure originally developed in the late nineteenth century to support Manchester's booming industrial economy. The wider site sits alongside the world-famous Liverpool Road railway buildings, closely linked to the early development of the Science and Industry Museum and Manchester's role as the birthplace of the industrial revolution.
Originally designed as a covered market and storage space serving the surrounding canals, railways, and warehouses, the hall later fell into decline as industrial uses moved on. In recent years it has been sensitively regenerated and reborn as Campfield Studios, a flexible cultural and events venue that blends historic industrial architecture with modern hospitality and performance spaces.
The photograph captures the hall in active use, filled with people attending a live music and social event. Temporary bars, food stalls, and performance equipment sit beneath the exposed iron columns and high roof structure, highlighting the adaptive reuse of the space. The mix of seated and standing visitors reflects the building's modern role as a community hub for markets, concerts, exhibitions, and social gatherings, while the original Victorian engineering remains clearly visible.
Taken during warmer months, with light flooding in through large windows and open entrances, the scene illustrates Manchester's ongoing regeneration of its industrial heritage. Campfield Studios stands as a strong example of how historic science and industry buildings in northern England have been successfully repurposed for contemporary urban life, culture, and leisure, while retaining a strong sense of place and historical continuity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T2843N - Holy Trinity Church lies on Boar Lane in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It is a Grade I listed Church of England parish church in the Parish of Leeds St George in the Diocese of Leeds. It was built in 1722?7, though its steeple dates from 1839. Holy Trinity is in the evangelical church tradition of the Church of England.
History and architecture
A 1714 proposal that a new church should be erected in central Leeds foundered for lack of subscribers, but, in 1722, Lady Elizabeth Hastings of Ledston, backed by leading merchants, revived the project, and the foundation stone of Holy Trinity was laid on 27 August 1722.
The architect of the church was for some time believed to be William Halfpenny. However, it has subsequently been discovered that his designs for the church, for which he was paid ?1 11s 6d on 8 May 1723, were never executed, and that the architect was William Etty of York. A letter from William Cookson to Ralph Thoresby dated 15 May 1723, enclosed a draught, the south front of our new church
it was drawn by Mr. Etty of York, who has also made us a wooden modell for our workmen to go by. Etty had been paid nineteen guineas in April of the same year for the model, which survived into the nineteenth century.
The west tower in Halfpenny's design was topped by a square, open colonnade with an obelisk-shaped spire. Etty did not envisage a spire, but a wooden one was later added by an unknown hand. Thomas Dunham Whitaker, Vicar of Whalley, Lancashire, in his Loidis and Elmete (1816), remarked of this spire: unquestionably one instance among many of private interference, by which the better judgment of real architects is often overruled, and for which they are unjustly considered as responsible. When the spire blew down in 1839, it was replaced by a taller stone steeple of three diminishing stages (architect: Robert Dennis Chantrell).
In 2020 a major refurbishment of the building was completed and will soon be home to a midweek ministry for city centre

King Amenhotep III commissioned numerous statues of himself, especially for his temples in Thebes, then Egypt's capital. His peaceful reign was a time of opulence and outstanding artistic refinement, often displayed on a grand and ambitious scale. The complete sculpture showed him striding. This and a slightly smaller colossus flanked a doorway in the temple of Mut in Karnak. The head of the second statue is also in the British Museum, but the bodies remain in Karnak. A century later the facial features were reworked for King Ramesses II to match his own official 'portrait'. Ramesses appropriated countless statues of royal predecessors

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T35BXM - Victoria station, also known as London Victoria, is a central London railway terminus and connected London Underground station in Victoria, in the City of Westminster, managed by Network Rail. Named after the nearby Victoria Street[4] (itself named after Queen Victoria), the main line station is a terminus of the Brighton Main Line to Gatwick Airport and Brighton and the Chatham Main Line to Ramsgate and Dover via Chatham. From the main lines, trains can connect to the Catford Loop Line, the Dartford Loop Line, and the Oxted line to East Grinstead and Uckfield. Southern operates most commuter and regional services to south London, Sussex and parts of east Surrey, while Southeastern operates trains to south-east London and Kent, alongside limited services operated by Thameslink. Gatwick Express trains run direct to Gatwick. The Underground station is on the Circle and District lines between Sloane Square and St James's Park, and the Victoria line between Pimlico and Green Park. The area around the station is an important interchange for other forms of transport: a local bus station is in the forecourt and Victoria Coach Station is nearby.
Victoria was built to serve both the Brighton and Chatham Main Lines, and has always had a split feel of being two separate stations. The Brighton station opened in 1860 with the Chatham station following two years later. It replaced a temporary terminus at Pimlico, and construction involved building the Grosvenor Bridge over the River Thames. It became immediately popular as a London terminus, causing delays and requiring upgrades and rebuilding. It was well known for luxury Pullman train services and continental boat-train trips, and became a focal point for soldiers during World War I.
Like other London termini, steam trains were phased out of Victoria by the 1960s, to be replaced by suburban electric and diesel multiple-unit services
all services from the station are currently operated using electric multiple units

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5PW - This photograph shows large numbers of Formula One fans gathered in tightly packed queues at entrance gates to Silverstone Circuit, having walked in from surrounding car parking areas during the British Grand Prix weekend. The image captures the scale of attendance and the steady, patient movement of spectators as they wait to be processed through ticket and security checks.
The crowd is diverse in age and dress, with many fans carrying backpacks, drinks, and personal items for a full day at the circuit. Bright summer sunshine and clear blue skies reinforce the seasonal nature of the event and the festival-like atmosphere that surrounds the British Grand Prix, one of the UK's most popular annual sporting occasions.
Such scenes highlight the logistical challenge of managing tens of thousands of arrivals within short time windows, where crowd density, pedestrian flow, and safety must be carefully controlled. The image documents the behind-the-scenes reality of large-scale motorsport events, where arrival routes from car parks, queuing systems, and stewarding play a critical role in maintaining order and public safety.
Well suited for editorial use, this photograph illustrates crowd behaviour, event access planning, and the lived experience of attending Formula One at Silverstone, capturing both the anticipation and the practical realities faced by spectators before they reach the track.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5PY - This photograph shows heavy congestion and long queues at an entrance gate to Silverstone Circuit during the Formula One British Grand Prix. Large numbers of spectators are held within temporary metal barriers as they wait to pass through controlled access points, illustrating the crowd density and operational pressures typical of peak arrival periods at major international sporting events.
The image captures a moment where pedestrian flow slows and compresses, emphasising the importance of effective crowd management, stewarding, and clear communication to maintain safety and prevent frustration. Bright summer weather and casual clothing underline the scale of attendance, while the tightly packed queues reflect the popularity of the British Grand Prix and the challenges of processing tens of thousands of visitors within limited time windows.
Entrance congestion of this kind highlights the logistical complexity of Formula One events, where security screening, ticket checks, and safety controls must balance speed with duty of care. The photograph provides strong documentary context for discussions around event planning, access design, and public safety at large UK sporting venues.
Well suited for editorial use, this image illustrates crowd behaviour, access bottlenecks, and the realities of managing spectator entry at one of the world's most famous motorsport circuits.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5T1 - This image shows a Silverstone Formula One Medical Response Unit vehicle parked adjacent to pedestrian access routes during a British Grand Prix weekend at Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire. The clearly marked medical response car forms part of the extensive safety and emergency planning required to manage one of the UK's largest annual sporting events.
Formula One race weekends at Silverstone attract very large crowds over several days, placing significant emphasis on spectator welfare, rapid emergency response, and effective crowd management. Dedicated medical vehicles and trained response teams are strategically positioned around the circuit to ensure fast access to both trackside incidents and public areas used by fans.
The photograph captures spectators walking past the medical unit under clear summer skies, reinforcing the visible presence of safety infrastructure within the wider event environment. Temporary fencing, controlled access routes, and speed restriction signage illustrate the layered approach to risk management that underpins large-scale motorsport events.
Beyond the racing itself, the image highlights the operational realities of hosting international sporting events, where emergency preparedness, duty of care, and public safety are as critical as sporting spectacle. It is well suited for editorial use covering motorsport safety, event management, emergency services, and crowd protection at major UK sporting venues.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RBXAM5 - Waterloo station also known as London Waterloo, is a central London terminus on the National Rail network in the United Kingdom, in the Waterloo area of the London Borough of Lambeth. It is connected to a London Underground station of the same name and is adjacent to Waterloo East station on the South Eastern Main Line. The station is the terminus of the South West Main Line to Weymouth via Southampton, the West of England main line to Exeter via Salisbury, the Portsmouth Direct line to Portsmouth Harbour which connects with ferry services to the Isle of Wight, and several commuter services around west and south-west London, Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire.
The station was opened in 1848 by the London and South Western Railway, and it replaced the earlier Nine Elms as it was closer to the West End. It was never designed to be a terminus, as the original intention was to continue the line towards the City of London, and consequently the station developed in a haphazard fashion, leading to difficulty finding the correct platform. The station was rebuilt in the early 20th century, opening in 1922, and included the Victory Arch over the main entrance, which commemorated World War I. Waterloo was the last London terminus to provide steam-powered services, which ended in 1967. The station was the London terminus for Eurostar international trains from 1994 until 2007, when they were transferred to St. Pancras.
Waterloo is the busiest railway station in the UK, handling 41 million passengers in the year to March 2022. It is also the UK's largest station in terms of floor space and has the greatest number of platforms.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39XXB - Brick Lane (Bengali: ?????? ?????) is a famous street in the East End of London, in the borough of Tower Hamlets. It runs from Swanfield Street in Bethnal Green in the north, crosses the Bethnal Green Road before reaching the busiest, most commercially active part which runs through Spitalfields, or along its eastern edge. Brick Lane's southern end is connected to Whitechapel High Street by a short extension called Osborn Street.
Today, it is the heart of the country's Bangladeshi community with the vicinity known to some as Banglatown. It is famous for its many curry houses
The street was formerly known as Whitechapel Lane, and wound through fields. It derives its current name from brick and tile manufacture started in the 15th century, which used the local brick earth deposits
In the 19th century, Irish people and Ashkenazi Jews immigrated to the area. Jewish immigration continued into the early 20th century.
In the 20th century the Brick Lane area was important in the second wave of development of Anglo-Indian cuisine, as families from countries such as Bangladesh (mainly the Greater Sylhet region) migrated to London to look for work. Some curry houses of Brick Lane do not sell alcoholic beverages, for most are owned by Muslims. According to EasyJet Traveller magazine, the top three curry houses on Brick Lane in 2021 are Aladin, Sheba and City Spice.
Bengalis in the United Kingdom settled in big cities with industrial employment. In London, many settled in the East End. For centuries the East End has been the first port of call for many immigrants working in the docks and shipping from Chittagong port in Bengal

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3YB6C - Liverpool Street station, also known as London Liverpool Street, is a central London railway terminus and connected London Underground station in the north-eastern corner of the City of London, in the ward of Bishopsgate Without. It is the terminus of the West Anglia Main Line to Cambridge, the Great Eastern Main Line to Norwich, commuter trains serving east London and destinations in the East of England, and the Stansted Express service to Stansted Airport.
The station opened in 1874, as a replacement for Bishopsgate station as the Great Eastern Railway's main London terminus. By 1895, it had the most platforms of any London terminal station. During the First World War, an air raid on the station killed 16 on site, and 146 others in nearby areas. In the build-up to the Second World War, the station served as the entry point for thousands of child refugees arriving in London as part of the Kindertransport rescue mission. The station was damaged by the 1993 Bishopsgate bombing and, during the 7 July 2005 bombing, seven passengers were killed when a bomb exploded aboard an Underground train, just after it had departed from Liverpool Street. New platforms for the Elizabeth line opened in 2022 as part of the Crossrail project.
Liverpool Street was built as a dual-level station, with provision for the Underground. A tube station opened in 1875 for the Metropolitan Railway
the tube station is now served by the Central, Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines. It is in fare zone 1 and is managed directly by Network Rail.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P4JX5N - Bold Street is a street in Liverpool, England. It is known for its caf??s and for the Church of St Luke, which is situated at the top end. The bottom end leads into the area surrounding Clayton Square, which is part of the main retail district of central Liverpool. The bottom end contains more shops which are chain stores. Liverpool Central, a major hub of the Merseyrail rapid transit/commuter rail network, can also be accessed via an entrance on Bold Street next to The Lyceum, a post office which was Europe's first lending library. The middle area contains bars as it leads towards Concert Square, a square containing clubs and bars, and the top end contains more independent shops and cafes. For the most part, Bold Street is pedestrianised and cars do not have access.
History
Bold Street was originally laid out as a ropewalk
a long thin area of land used in the manufacture of rope (the area is now known as 'Rope Walks'). They used to measure the rope from the top of Bold Street to the bottom because it was the standard length needed for sailing ships. It was laid out for residences around 1780 and named after Jonas Bold, a noted sugar trader and banker. In 1802 Bold became Mayor of Liverpool.
Merchants that worked on the docks needed houses close by. Therefore, houses were constructed in Hanover Street first, followed by Duke Street and then Bold Street. The fields that were in the area earlier were also developed quickly into houses. Although there had been port-related industrial activity in the area, with roperies occupying the site of what is now Bold Street to supply the sailing ships, this intensified along with a demand for residential properties so that the merchants could be located close to their business interests.
Pavement Art from the Bold Street Festival
Physician Jonathan Binns, an 18th-century abolitionist, was among those building a home on the street

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD243N - This image shows a crowded late summer scene on Church Street in the historic old town of Whitby, North Yorkshire. The narrow pedestrian street is lined with traditional buildings and independent shops, many associated with Whitby Jet jewellery, local crafts, and tourism-related retail.
The photograph captures a busy period, likely during the tourist season, with visitors filling the street as they walk, browse shops, and explore the town centre. People of different ages are visible, dressed for cool but settled weather, suggesting a typical day for visitors to this popular seaside destination.
Church Street forms one of Whitby's main tourist routes, linking the harbour area with attractions such as the Museum of Whitby Jet and the climb toward Whitby Abbey. Overhead wires, hanging shop signs, and historic facades contribute to the strong sense of place and heritage.
The image documents the impact of tourism on a small historic town, illustrating both the economic importance of visitors and the pressures of crowding in narrow medieval streets during peak periods. It reflects Whitby's enduring appeal as a coastal heritage destination in northern England.

The present gateway dates from 1768 and is a three-arched sandstone structure which carries the walkway forming part of Chester city walls. In 1899 a clock was added to the top of the gateway to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria two years earlier. It is carried on openwork iron pylons, has a clock face on all four sides, and a copper ogee cupola. The clock was designed by the Chester architect John Douglas. The whole structure, gateway and clock, was designated as a Grade I listed building on 28 July 1955

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JJPKM1 - Carnaby Street is a pedestrianised shopping street in Soho in the City of Westminster, Central London. Close to Oxford Street and Regent Street, it is home to fashion and lifestyle retailers, including many independent fashion boutiques.
Streets crossing, or meeting with, Carnaby Street are, from south to north, Beak Street, Broadwick Street, Kingly Court, Ganton Street, Marlborough Court, Lowndes Court, Fouberts Place, Little Marlborough Street and Great Marlborough Street. The nearest London Underground station is Oxford Circus.
In 1934, Amy Ashwood Garvey and Sam Manning opened the Florence Mills Social Club at number 50, a jazz club that became a gathering place for supporters of Pan-Africanism.
Carnaby Street in the early 1950s was a shabby Soho backstreet consisting of rag trade sweat shops, locksmiths and tailors, and a Central Electricity Board depot practically took up one side of the street. The genesis of Carnaby Street as a global fashion destination began with Bill 'Vince' Green, a male physique photographer. In 1954 he opened opened a small clothing boutique 'Vince' in adjoining Newburgh Street, to capitalise on the homosexual body-building community that congregated around the Marshall Street baths. Those who modelled for the Vince catalogue and advertisements, and boosted its popularity, were the then barely-known Sean Connery and the hugely popular handsome boxer Billy Walker. To further attract custom, Green hired pretty young men as sales assistants, one of whom was the Glasgow-born John Stephen, later to be known as 'The King Of Carnaby Street'.
Stephen opened the boutique His Clothes, in 1957 after his shop in Beak Street burned down. As Mary Quant later stated of Stephen, He made Carnaby Street. He was Carnaby Street. He invented a look for young men which was wildly exuberant, dashing and fun. According to James Gardiner, who at one stage made ties for the Vince boutique, at this period Carnaby Street was essentially a gay thing...The

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M07AAB - The Chinatown Gate is a grand entryway into London's lively Chinatown district and a cultural landmark. Boasting a tile roof and red pillars that lead into a vibrant area of red lanterns, noodle shops and street signs with Chinese script, the Chinatown Gate is a must-visit landmark on your way to explore the cultural area.
Each year, roughly 17 million people pass through the Chinatown Gate to visit the cultural enclave and sample delicious Chinese foods. With attractions and dining for families and solo travellers alike, Chinatown is a popular destination for sightseeing and shopping.
London's original Chinatown dates back to the start of the 20th century, but after the Blitz of World War II, many of the shops and restaurants moved to other locations. The current Chinatown, located off Shaftesbury Avenue, was established in the 1970s. The Chinatown Gate was completed in 2016 and stands as one of the largest Chinese gates in the country.
The Chinatown Gate marks the entry into Chinatown and its bustling restaurants and shops. The gate is designed with ornate features done in a traditional Qing Dynasty style that complements the stone lions, contemporary Chinese artwork and other traditional Chinese entrance points to the enclave
Along with seeing the gate itself, you can explore the wonders of Chinatown after stopping at the landmark. Chinatown features many buildings and streets with traditional dragons and lanterns, as well as street signs with English and Chinese writing.
Chinatown is also a haven for art lovers. You'll find contemporary art sculptures, impressive religious sculptures and the iconic stone lions. Chinatown is especially interesting during events, such as Chinese New Year, which features parades with floats, lion dances and live performances. You'll also see hundreds of red lanterns during the New Year celebrations that make for a spectacular sight

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K148W6 - Avanti West Coast is a train operating company in the United Kingdom owned by FirstGroup (70%) and Trenitalia (30%) that operates the West Coast Partnership.
During November 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced the InterCity West Coast franchise would be replaced by the West Coast Partnership (WCP). In August 2019, the DfT awarded the WCP franchise to the First Trenitalia consortium. On 8 December 2019, Avanti West Coast took over operations from the prior operating company Virgin Trains, which had run the franchise since 1997. Originally, the franchise was initially scheduled to run until March 2030, and had also been set to operate the initial High Speed 2 services from 2026. However, during December 2020, it was announced that First Trenitalia and the DfT had agreed to terminate the WCP franchise at the earlier date of 31 March 2026 as part of the abolition of the franchise system. Since then a number of contract changes have taken place due to COVID-19 and then poor performance by the company. As of March 2023, the company's contract will expire in October 2023.
Between 14 August and 18 September 2022, Avanti West Coast reduced its timetable, citing unofficial strike action from its employees. However, this allegation was disputed by Aslef, which accused the company of lying and blamed their lack of recruitment, especially of train drivers, for the problems. Trains were running at one service per hour on the majority of routes, as opposed to the three which would typically occur on the London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly route. Following these changes, Avanti West Coast was subject to public criticism
news stories emerged of numerous train cancellations, overcrowded services, delays, and expensive fares. Many commuters faced difficulties reaching their destinations on the reduced services and some travellers have been left to wait for to two days before travel for tickets to be released for sale

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFFFHG - The square's creation arose out of a project by Manchester Corporation's Monuments Committee to erect a memorial to Prince Albert who had died of typhoid in 1861. After initial proposals to create a memorial library, museum or botanical gardens, the committee decided to erect a statue in a decorated canopy. It was originally planned to place the monument in front of the Royal Infirmary building at Piccadilly, between the statues of Wellington and Peel. However it was felt that its ornate Gothic design was not in keeping with the neoclassical infirmary.[3] In 1863, land was offered by the Corporation which was cleared to make way for a public space

However it was felt that its ornate Gothic design was not in keeping with the neoclassical infirmary.[3] In 1863, land was offered by the Corporation which was cleared to make way for a public space

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RDAWB5 - Akt (stylised as akt and legally known as The Albert Kennedy Trust) is a voluntary organisation based in England, created in 1989 to serve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBTQ+) young people who are homeless or living in a hostile environment. It started in Greater Manchester in 1989 and opened in London in 1996, and expanded to Newcastle in 2013, Newcastle upon Tyne and Bristol.
History
The charity is named after Albert Kennedy (31 January 1973 ? 30 April 1989), a 16-year-old Social Services care leaver from Manchester who was gay. Kennedy died after falling from the top of Chorlton Street multi-storey car park. Despite an inquest the circumstances of his death remain unclear. The official version is that he died from misadventure.
Kennedy had experienced a great deal of homophobia during his life. Manchester's gay community was moved into action by the Trust's founder patron Cath Hall. Cath Hall was a straight foster carer who saw the need for an organisation to be set up to support young lesbian, gay, bi and trans people who were facing homelessness because of rejection at home. She had observed that Kennedy's case was not isolated, and that many other LGBTQ+ young people in and out of the foster care system were struggling with the effects of homophobia. Hall described the founding of the trust as an emotional response, an angry response, to what was going on.
As a result, the Albert Kennedy Trust was formed, officially becoming a Trust in 1990.
In 2019 the Albert Kennedy Trust rebranded as akt.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RDAWP5 - The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (SPI), also called Order of Perpetual Indulgence (OPI), is a charitable, protest, and street performance movement that uses drag and religious imagery to satirize issues of sex, gender, and morality (particularly Christian perspectives on these topics) and fundraise for charity. In 1979, a small group of gay men in San Francisco began wearing the attire of Catholic nuns in visible situations using camp to promote various social and political causes in the Castro District.
From the original organization in San Francisco, the Sisters have grown throughout the U.S., Canada, Australia, Europe, and South America, and are now an international network of autonomous orders. These orders are mostly registered as non-profit charity organizations that raise money for AIDS, LGBT-related causes, and mainstream community service organizations, while promoting safer sex and educating others about the harmful effects of drug use and other high risk behaviors. They have also protested many Christian, and specifically Catholic, events perceived as anti-LGBT, including the visit of Pope John Paul II to the United States.
Throughout the movement's history there have been a number of conflicts with Christian communities. The group has been characterized by some Catholics (such as the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights) as anti-Catholic and a hate-group for impersonating and mocking Catholic practices and beliefs, including religious sisters

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHB6TA - Euston is a London Underground station served by the Victoria line and both central branches of the Northern line. It directly connects with Euston main line station above it. The station is in Travelcard Zone 1.
Euston was constructed as two separate underground stations. Three of the four Northern line platforms date from the station's opening in 1907. The fourth Northern line platform and the two Victoria line platforms were constructed in the 1960s when the station was significantly altered to accommodate the Victoria line. Plans for High Speed 2 and Crossrail 2 both include proposals to modify the station to provide interchanges with the new services.
On the Northern line's Bank branch the station is between Camden Town and King's Cross St Pancras. On the Charing Cross branch it is between Mornington Crescent and Warren Street. On the Victoria line it is between Warren Street and King's Cross St. Pancras. The station is near Euston Square station allowing connections at street level to the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy MM99TA - In 2002, Virgin Trains in the UK began operating custom-designed Pendolino trains known as the Class 390 on its West Coast Main Line (WCML) franchise. The 53 9-car trains were constructed by Alstom and are leased by Virgin Trains from Angel Trains.
Owing to the failure of the WCML upgrade to provide in-cab signalling, these units are limited in service to 125 mph (200 km/h) operation rather than their 140 mph (225 km/h) design speed. In 2006, Virgin Trains announced that, over the following three years, they would be examining the possibility of running the trains at 135 mph (215 km/h) through the Trent Valley as part of their new WCML Franchise Proposal.
An Alstom Class 390 Pendolino in Birmingham
The Class 390 Pendolino were maintained by Alstom (West Coast Traincare) under contract to Virgin Trains until 2012. The main maintenance locations are Wembley, Midlands (Oxley, Wolverhampton), Manchester (Longsight) and Glasgow (Polmadie), as well as Liverpool (for minor work only) and several Traincare Points along the line of route (such as Euston and Carlisle). Headquarters for West Coast Traincare moved from the former Metro-Cammell factory at Washwood Heath in Birmingham upon its closure in November 2005 to Manchester Longsight depot with some functions being based at a new office facility at Oxley depot.
In 2008 DfT announced that 31 of the existing 9-car sets would be lengthened to 11 cars to increase capacity. Four new 11-car sets were also to be built. Angel Trains ordered the vehicles from Alstom in September 2008. Virgin Rail Projects has been selected to introduce the new trains. The longer units would require major infrastructure changes to allow stations and depots to accommodate the 11-car units.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PM6261 - St George's Market is the last surviving Victorian covered market in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It is located on May Street, close to the River Lagan and the Waterfront Hall. Belfast Corporation (now Belfast City Council) commissioned the building of St George's Market, which was built in three phases between 1890 and 1896. Before 1890 St George's Market was an open market and most likely contained a slaughterhouse and a meat market. Today it is a thriving market with 300 traders, crafters, musicians, and food vendors.
By the 1980s, St George's Market had developed into a general market and it became the last of Belfast's thriving Victorian markets. The market was pressured with increased maintenance costs and changes to hygiene regulations, among other issues, and Belfast City Council decided to source other uses for the listed building. A campaign backed by the city council, traders and the general public resulted in a Heritage Lottery Fund-backed ?3.5 million refurbishment programme assisted by the Environment and Heritage Agency. Brick and stonework that had badly deteriorated was returned to good condition, and special bricks were produced in England to match the original unusually sized bricks. The fully renovated St George's Market reopened its doors on 14 May 1999.
St George's Market is primarily used as a market, however a number of other events are held at the site. These range from food festivals, art initiatives, exhibitions, charity launches, fashion shoots and live music events. Local software company Northbrook Technology hold their annual Staff Christmas Party at the venue.
The market has won a number of recent awards, including being voted Best Large Indoor Market 2014 and as one of the UK's top five markets by the National Association of British Market Authorities in 2006, and winning third place in the best markets category of the Observer Food Monthly/Waitrose Awards in 2004

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4560602809 - 'Eastgate, shown here and Eastgate Clock in Chester, Cheshire, England, stand on the site of the original entrance to the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix. The clock is a prominent landmark in the city of Chester and is said to be the most photographed clock in England after Big Ben.
The original gate was guarded by a timber tower which was replaced by a stone tower in the 2nd century, and this in turn was replaced probably in the 14th century. The whole structure, gateway and clock, was listed by English Heritage on 28 July 1955 as a Grade I listed building. You know you have been on a visit to Chester when you have an image of this clock in your memory card. To avoid this failure of imagination, this photograph was taken from under the clock mechanism.
Eastgate was originally defended by a timber tower. The road running through the gate led to Manchester, then across the Pennines to York. By the 18th century the city walls were no longer needed for defensive purposes and so, rather than being pulled down, they were converted into walkways. The medieval gateways were obstructing the traffic into the city and were replaced by wider arched gateways with balustraded parapets. The first gateway to be replaced was Eastgate in 1768 which was rebuilt as an 'elegant arch'. It was built at the expense of Richard Grosvenor, 1st Earl Grosvenor, and designed by Mr Hayden (or Heyden), the earl's surveyor of buildings.
Eastgate today is a clutch of upmarket shops, Browns Jewellers, banks and the Chester Grosvenor Five Star Hotel. Afternoons are a swirl of rushing shoppers, some stationary Italian, Japanese and American tourists and generally the street artist or odd busker knocking out 'Wonderwall'. To the right the wooden 'rows' uniquely of Chester can be seen, including the 'Ye Olde Boot Inn'. A fine watering hole with Sam Smiths ales, the oldest in Chester, circa 1643.

SA were on top form tonight at the Wolverhampton Civic. Coincidentally the city xmas lights were switched on this night too, with fireworks.
However the best show was in the Civic with Skin body surfing down to the bottom of the hall &
back, then doing a lap of the circle. A brilliant performance and two new tracks chucked in to boot!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2CBTEFB - The Hillsborough Memorial at Anfield Stadium, Liverpool (Anfield L4 0TH), displaying the engraved names of the football supporters who died as a result of the Hillsborough disaster of 15 April 1989. The memorial serves as a permanent place of remembrance and reflection for families, supporters and visitors.
The disaster occurred during an FA Cup semi-final at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield, when overcrowding in the Leppings Lane end led to a fatal crush. In the years that followed, bereaved families and campaigners sought accountability amid widespread misinformation and institutional failures.
In 2016, fresh inquests returned verdicts that the 96 victims were unlawfully killed, concluding that police failings were the primary cause and that supporters were not to blame. These findings represented a landmark moment after decades of campaigning for truth and justice. Subsequent criminal proceedings were brought against individuals and organisations
however, in 2021 all remaining prosecutions were discontinued, a decision that proved deeply controversial and distressing for families, despite the inquests' conclusions remaining legally and historically significant.
The memorial at Anfield therefore represents not only remembrance but also the long struggle for justice, transparency and accountability in the aftermath of a major public disaster. It stands as a reminder of the human cost of institutional failure and the enduring impact on families and communities.
Photographed in daylight with the memorial inscriptions clearly visible, the image carries strong editorial value for themes including public remembrance, justice campaigns, football history, disaster accountability, and the relationship between sport, institutions and the law in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEJ68T - Passengers crowd a ScotRail train and platform at Glasgow Central Station, Glasgow G1 3SL, illustrating peak-time congestion and the everyday pressures of rail commuting in Scotland's busiest transport hub. The image shows a dense flow of people boarding and alighting from a modern ScotRail carriage beneath the station's historic iron and glass roof.
Glasgow Central handles some of the highest passenger volumes in the Scottish rail network, serving long-distance intercity services as well as heavily used commuter routes across the Central Belt. During peak periods, platforms and carriages can become severely crowded, reflecting sustained demand for rail travel linked to employment patterns, housing location and urban concentration.
Since ScotRail's return to public ownership in 2022, issues such as capacity, reliability, rolling stock availability and timetable resilience have remained central to political and media debate. Supporters of public control argue that long-term planning and social value should take precedence, while critics highlight ongoing challenges faced by daily commuters, including overcrowding and service disruption.
Images like this are commonly used to illustrate discussions around commuter experience, transport investment, public service delivery and the limits of existing rail infrastructure. The visible mix of ages, workwear and shopping bags emphasises the role of rail as an essential, everyday service rather than a discretionary mode of travel.
Photographed at platform level with strong contextual detail, the image carries high editorial value for coverage of commuting pressures, public transport policy, rail reform and the lived experience of passengers in Scotland's urban centres.
