Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM97NJ - A documentary close-up of the historic Robinsons brewery complex in Stockport, framed to emphasise the dense layers of signage and architectural character that make the Unicorn Brewery instantly recognisable. Red brick industrial blocks rise behind older, more ornate front ranges, with multiple pieces of legible branding and wayfinding painted directly onto the buildings. The most prominent rooftop lettering reads F ROBINSON, while lower fa??ades carry traditional trade wording such as BREWERS, BOTTLE and OFFICES, creating a strong visual shorthand for brewing heritage and long-established manufacturing in a town-centre setting. The mix of materials, including patterned brickwork and carved stone detailing around an arched window, adds a slightly Victorian, workmanlike elegance that feels rooted in the North West's industrial past.
The sky is changeable and cold-season in tone, with thick grey cloud and brighter breaks that give soft, even light across the brickwork without harsh shadows. That muted winter feel suits the subject, making the scene look authentic and everyday rather than staged: a working industrial landmark seen as part of the urban fabric. The composition works particularly well for editorial use because it tells the story through readable text and recognisable forms, without requiring people in the frame.
This image can illustrate a wide range of themes including British brewing history, family-run regional businesses, UK food-and-drink production, industrial architecture, and Stockport's heritage identity around the town centre and Underbank area. It is also useful for travel and destination features that reference brewery tours, visitor attractions, and the continuing cultural pull of traditional regional beer brands in Greater Manchester.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM9811 - A close-up, documentary view of the Arden Arms pub window on Millgate in Stockport, focusing on the ornate etched glass panel with the bold ARDEN ARMS name set within an elaborate Victorian-style scrollwork design. The glazing acts like a mirror as well as a sign, catching reflections of trees and the sky outside, which gives the image a layered feel where the pub's identity sits on top of the street scene. Warm interior lighting glows faintly behind the glass, suggesting a welcoming bar space inside, while the exterior reflections and cool tones point to a cold-season day.
The reflections show bare or late-season branches and a mottled sky, implying late autumn or winter, with changeable cloud cover and crisp, dry conditions rather than heavy rain. The contrast between the dark window frame, the pale etched panel and the softer colours in the reflected street creates a strong, readable graphic composition that works well for editorial layouts, headlines, and location-led storytelling.
This image is highly usable for themes such as British pub culture, real ale heritage, hospitality and nightlife, and local identity in Greater Manchester. Because the pub name is clear and central, it also functions as a straightforward location identifier for Stockport town centre, and for features about traditional pubs that remain part of everyday life. The decorative craftsmanship of the etched glass adds an extra angle for heritage and design coverage, hinting at the Arden's long history and character without needing to show the full exterior or interior

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJ3YPX - A busy outdoor seating area at the Buxton Brewery Tap House located within the Pavilion Building at Pavilion Gardens in Buxton, Derbyshire, England. Groups of people sit at wooden benches enjoying craft beer and real ale on a warm, sunny day, with blue skies overhead and parasols providing shade. A chalkboard sign in the foreground advertises beers from Buxton Brewery, a well-known independent brewery closely associated with the Peak District and modern British craft-beer culture.
The Pavilion Building forms part of the wider Pavilion Gardens complex, a historic Edwardian leisure and events space near the centre of Buxton, a spa town renowned for its Georgian and Victorian architecture and its role as a gateway to the Peak District National Park. The scene captures contemporary British outdoor drinking culture, combining heritage surroundings with modern hospitality and tourism. The image conveys relaxation, social interaction, and seasonal enjoyment, typical of summer afternoons in English market towns.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJPXHJ - BUXTON BREWERY'S FIRST EVER BREW WAS MASHED-IN ON A COLD, DARK, JANUARY 1ST, 2009. THE BREWHOUSE WAS THE FAMILY GARAGE AND THE BATCH SIZE WAS ABOUT 40 LITRES.
The resulting Pale Ale was a long way off what Geoff had in mind, but nevertheless, was consumed with relish after a tantalising wait for fermentation and bottle-conditioning to run their course. Over the following months, recipes were tweaked, altered, thrown away and revived as they searched out information online and in countless books and picked the brains of generous and far more experienced brewers.
Within 12 months, with positive feedback and enthusiasm, the decision to take brewing to the next level and go ?commercial' was made and for a while Buxton ?cuckoo-brewed' at another local microbrewery. In January 2010, with Geoff ?going for it' full-time, brewing on a second-hand 800 litre plant began in earnest.
Fast-forward 9 years and the team, which has steadily grown to be 11 strong is now based in a 7000 square foot modern building on Staden Lane, Buxton. Its custom designed and (British) built brewhouse produces around 3500 litres per brew, 3 times per week.
The brewery makes upwards of 30 distinct brews of all kinds and has many other special editions both planned and in its back-catalogue. Innovation and super-high quality are the prime goals, along with a nod to tradition and an almost maniacal attention to detail.
All of the beers the brewery produces are designed to delight the senses and enthral the drinker. Not all beers are created equal, some are big and strong and full of powerful hops and malts, others are lighter, and have subtle nuances of flavour and aroma. All are intended to be enjoyed as a lovingly hand made product, nurtured by a small team of dedicated beer lovers.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2REGJ6M - The exterior of Cloisters Bar, a long-established independent public house located on Brougham Street in Edinburgh's West End. The pub occupies a substantial stone building and is easily recognised by its red-painted windows and traditional hanging flower baskets, photographed here in the early evening with customers visible inside.
Cloisters has been independently owned and run for decades, most notably under the long stewardship of Alastair and Mary Russell, who developed its reputation as one of Edinburgh's leading real-ale pubs from the late 20th century onwards. Unlike tied houses operated by large pub companies, Cloisters has remained free of brewery ownership, allowing it to curate a changing and carefully selected range of beers.
The pub is particularly well known for its extensive offering of cask ales and craft beers from across Scotland, alongside guest ales from English and wider UK microbreweries. This emphasis on variety and quality has made Cloisters a regular fixture in real-ale guides and a destination for both local drinkers and visitors seeking traditional pub culture.
Photographed at dusk, the image documents a working city pub rooted in independence, local knowledge and brewing heritage. It illustrates themes of Scottish pub culture, real ale traditions, independent hospitality, and the survival of characterful pubs within Edinburgh's urban fabric.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2REGJ6Y - A chalkboard beer list inside Cloisters Bar, an independent real-ale pub on Brougham Street in Edinburgh. The hand-written board displays a changing selection of cask and keg beers, with an emphasis on Scottish breweries alongside guest ales from across the wider UK.
Cloisters is particularly known for supporting local and regional brewers, regularly featuring beers from Edinburgh, the Scottish Borders, Orkney, Aberdeen and the Highlands. The visible selection includes traditional cask ales, modern IPAs, stouts and experimental styles, reflecting the breadth of contemporary Scottish brewing while maintaining a strong connection to classic pub culture.
Photographed indoors under pub lighting, the image documents everyday real-ale culture in Scotland, highlighting the role of independent pubs as curators of local brewing traditions. It is well suited for editorial use relating to beer culture, Scottish food and drink, independent pubs, microbreweries, and urban social life. Breweries :-
The chalkboard lists rotating cask and keg beers from multiple Scottish and UK breweries, including:

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMRX - This image shows the exterior of the Barrel Store operated by Wild Card Brewery, located on the Ravenswood Industrial Estate in Walthamstow, East London. Bold painted lettering on the rendered wall advertises the Barrel Store and highlights the brewery's focus on the retail and manufacture of barrel-aged beer, a specialist area within the UK craft brewing scene.
Wild Card Brewery is part of a wider cluster of independent creative and food-and-drink businesses that have taken root in former light-industrial premises across Walthamstow. Facilities such as the Barrel Store are used for ageing beer in oak barrels, allowing flavours to develop over extended periods and linking modern craft brewing with traditional production techniques.
The scene is photographed in daylight under a partly cloudy sky, with picnic-style outdoor seating visible in front of the building, suggesting use as both a working production space and a customer-facing retail or tasting area. The utilitarian industrial setting contrasts with the growing cultural and social role of craft breweries as community hubs.
This image is well suited to editorial use covering London's craft beer movement, independent breweries, small-scale manufacturing, urban regeneration, food and drink culture, and the reuse of industrial estates by creative businesses in East London.

A freshly poured pint of golden ale sits on the polished wooden bar, with the distinctive pump clips arranged behind it, representing a mix of independent and historic London breweries.
The scene captures the traditional presentation of cask-conditioned beer in an English pub, with hand-pulled pumps, branded clips, and a well-stocked back bar visible in the background. These beers reflect the diversity of London's brewing scene, combining long-established names such as Young's with newer independent breweries that have contributed to the city's modern craft-beer revival.
Photographed indoors under warm ambient lighting, the image documents everyday pub culture in England, illustrating themes of social life, hospitality, and British brewing heritage. It is suitable for use in editorial coverage relating to pubs, beer, London food and drink culture, and the contemporary UK brewing industry. Five Points Pale ? Five Points Brewing Company

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R0DWW2 - As Masham celebrated the King's Coronation, people in the small market town have spoken of hopes a buyer can be found for the Black Sheep Brewery.
Last week, Black Sheep announced administrators had been appointed after being hit very hard by the pandemic and a rise in costs.
The company, which employs around 50 members of staff, was founded in 1992 and has become a tourist hotspot bringing a significant amount of footfall to the town.
One local business owner told the Stray Ferret people are worried about a potential loss of income for their own businesses if the brewery doesn't survive.
Tim Ledbetter, owner of Bentley's of Masham, said:
With it being such a big employer, there is then a big knock-on effect.
We get a lot of trade from visitors of Black Sheep ? it could be detrimental.
The brewery reported turnover of ?14.3 million as of March 31, 2022, according to its most recent accounts. However, it also stated a pre-tax loss of ?1.18 million, compared to ?862,871 profit in the previous year

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59WRT - This image shows a detailed drinks price list displayed inside a bar located on The Shambles in York, one of the city's most famous and historic streets. The black board lists a range of draught beverages under the heading Permanent Premiers, including named beers such as Stumbler, Dark, Bitter, Lager, Jorvik, Pulp Apple, Rhubarb Cider, Sentient Keg, Tonkoko, Wavelength and Burn Rate, each shown with corresponding prices for different measures.
The board also advertises Taster Trays, offering thirds of draught ale and single measures of gin or rum with mixer, reflecting contemporary craft beer and tasting culture within British pubs and bars. A Can of the Week is highlighted as Rational Haze Hopfenweizen, reinforcing the rotating and experimental nature of modern independent beer offerings.
The utilitarian, text-heavy design prioritises clarity and function, typical of modern pub interiors where pricing transparency and variety are key to customer choice. The image was taken indoors under artificial lighting, with the high-contrast white lettering standing out clearly against the dark background.
Set within York's historic city centre, where medieval architecture and heavy tourism coexist with a lively hospitality scene, this price board illustrates the blend of traditional pub culture with contemporary craft beer trends. Images like this are commonly used to represent British drinking culture, independent bars, urban nightlife, hospitality pricing, and everyday social life in England's historic cities.

National Club of the Year 2008
National Finalist 2010/2015/2017/2018
The bar at the Village Hall has been run under licence, free form tie, by Derek & Alison Massey since July 2004, and is now managed by their son, Chris Massey.
The bar was originally set up by the Village Hall committee, but due to the Hall's charitable status, is now run separately with a rent payable. It still operates as a members bar although visitors are welcome for a nominal fee and a visitors book exists for this purpose.
When originally opened, the bar was tied to John Smith's Brewery but quickly became free from tie and was amongst the first outlets in the area to stock real ale. We now regularly feature in the CAMRA Club of the Year contest and are awarded for the condition of the seven ever-changing real ales on offer. We currently hold the title for the Local and Regional CAMRA Club of the Year, and are in the final 4 for the whole country.
The Village Hall offers a warm welcome to members in the cosy lounge or more spacious hall, and as well as our excellent real ales, we also have a well stocked bar offering an excellent range of beers, wines and spirits and in particular, Gin!

Established in 2014 in a converted box factory, adjacent to Tennent's brewery. The building dates from 1964. Drygate Brewing Co have been making beer in the historic heart of Glasgow since 2014. We brew with open doors and open minds
we believe good beer can come from anywhere, and anyone.
Collaboration with our community is at our core
we love showcasing creators of beer, food, art, design, music, comedy, poetry, and more.
Operating across our state of the art bespoke 26.5HL main brewhouse + 250L Studio kit, our brewing team share a passion for great beer. Housed in a converted box factory under the seven peaks of the roof, our building reflects on Glasgow's industrial past while the experiential brewery inside invites visitors on a journey of brewing and discovery.
85 Drygate was built in 1964, originally as a box assembly and screenprinting factory, using brick, steel and concrete. The design concentrates on existing eccentricities of the building, bearing traces of all its previous incarnations: box factory, print works, bottling plant and storage unit.
The original structure and details of the building have been preserved including the restoration of the original seven peaks of the sawtooth roof, exposed brick walls displayed behind newly installed panes of glass and the preservation of paint marks on the concrete floor, celebrating traces of the building's functional heritage.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AERPFX - A craft brewery or microbrewery is a brewery that produces small amounts of beer, typically less than large breweries, and is often independently owned. Such breweries are generally perceived and marketed as having an emphasis on enthusiasm, new flavours, and varied brewing techniques.
The microbrewing movement began in both the United States and United Kingdom in the 1970s, although traditional artisanal brewing existed in Europe for centuries and subsequently spread to other countries. As the movement grew, and some breweries expanded their production and distribution, the more encompassing concept of craft brewing emerged. A brewpub is a pub that brews its own beer for sale on the premises
The term microbrewery originated in the UK in the late 1970s to describe the new generation of small breweries that focused on producing traditional cask ale independently of major brewers or pub chains. In 1972, Martin Sykes established Selby Brewery as the first new independent brewing company for 50 years
Some British brewpubs specialize in ale, while others brew continental lagers and wheat beers. The Ministry of Ales, Burnley
The Masons Arms in Headington, Oxford
The Brunswick Inn, Derby (in 2010, half of the beers sold by the establishment were brewed on-site)
The Watermill pub, Ings Cumbria
and the Old Cannon Brewery, Bury St Edmunds are some examples of small independent brewpubs in the UK.
The city of Bristol was identified by The Guardian in May 2014 as an area where the microbrewery industry had flourished. Ten brewpubs, such as Zerodegrees, The Tobacco Factory, Copper Jacks Crafthouse and The Urban Standard, were identified as thriving Bristol craft beer establishments.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XNA1 - The Thatchers company was founded by William Thatcher in 1904. His son Stanley Thatcher, born in 1910, began selling draught cider to pubs in Somerset and the company's presence in the area grew. The company is still family owned and employs around 200 people. In 1992 Martin took over from his father, John Thatcher, as managing director.
It has 500 acres of its own orchard, as well as using apples from other growers in the area. Alongside its bush orchards, Thatchers has pioneered a method of growing its apple trees in a hedgerow style. Trained on wires, this enables easier harvesting and also helps to ensure the fruit has the optimum combination of sunlight and rain. It has also led to the development of a new bespoke harvester. At the height of season, Thatchers can press 500 tonnes of apples per day. Thatchers also maintains an exhibition orchard in which over 458 different varieties of apple tree are grown. Many of the traditional ciders produced at Myrtle Farm are matured in 100-year-old oak vats, which gives the cider a distinctive taste.
In addition to its cider production, Myrtle Farm is the UK's biggest processor of blackcurrants, dealing with 90 per cent of the UK's total crop, which it processes on behalf of Ribena.
Thatchers Cider is available in many sports clubs and events across the South West. They are involved with teams including Winscombe R.F.C., Bath Rugby, Somerset County Cricket Club, Bristol Rugby, Bristol City, Yeovil Town, Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, Bristol Rovers, Plymouth Argyle F.C, Exeter City and Torquay United.
Thatchers are also involved in many local events and festivals including: Glastonbury Festival, Royal Bath and West Show, Bristol International Balloon Fiesta and Cambridge Folk Festival.
Thatcher's lost their ongoing cider sponsorship of the Glastonbury festival in 2019 to Mallets cider

Its a historic Art Nouveau Grade II masterpiece of a pub was built in 1905 on the site of a Dominican friary. The building was designed by architect H. Fuller-Clark and artist Henry Poole, both committed to the free-thinking of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Jolly friars appear everywhere in the pub in sculptures, mosaics and reliefs. We are lucky to still be here as our wonderful pub was saved from demolition by a campaign led by Sir John Betjeman.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R0DWWH - As Masham celebrated the King's Coronation, people in the small market town have spoken of hopes a buyer can be found for the Black Sheep Brewery.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEEGB3 - Opened by Felix O'Hanlon as The Railway Tavern, the pub was then bought by Michael Fanigan. Fanigan's son Patrick renamed and renovated the pub in 1885.
The Crown owes its elaborate tiling, stained glass and woodwork to the Italian craftsmen whom Fanigan persuaded to work on the pub after hours. These craftsmen were brought to Ireland to work on the many new churches being built in Belfast at the time. It was this high standard of work that gave the Crown the reputation of being one of the finest Victorian Gin Palaces of its time.
In 1978, the National Trust, following persuasion by people including Sir John Betjeman, purchased the property and three years later completed a ?400,000 renovation to restore the bar to its original Victorian state. Further restoration by the National Trust was done in 2007 at a cost of ?500,000. This work is the subject of a BBC Northern Ireland documentary, The Crown Jewel, screened in 2008.
A recognisable landmark of Belfast, the pub has featured as a location in numerous film and television productions, such as David Caffrey's Divorcing Jack (1998) and Carol Reed's classic 1947 film Odd Man Out.
The Crown has been given a Grade A Listed Building status by the Environment and Heritage Service.
