Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJTD - A wide-angle view of the main public entrance to the Etihad Stadium in east Manchester, photographed in bright summer daylight under a blue sky with scattered cloud. The Manchester City club crest is embedded in the forecourt, forming a strong visual focal point that reinforces the stadium's identity and sense of place.
The Etihad Stadium has been Manchester City's home since 2003 and sits at the heart of the wider Etihad Campus, a large-scale sports-led regeneration area developed on former industrial land. Originally built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games, the stadium was subsequently adapted for football use and has since become one of the most recognisable sporting venues in the UK.
Manchester City Football Club's recent domestic and European success has elevated the stadium to global prominence, with the surrounding campus now incorporating training facilities, community sports spaces and commercial development. The architecture and branding visible here reflect the club's modern, international profile while remaining rooted in east Manchester.
The image is well suited for editorial use covering Premier League football, elite sport infrastructure, football club identity, urban regeneration, sports branding, and the role of major stadiums in reshaping post-industrial city districts.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X2CG1B - This image shows a statue representing justice, holding the scales of justice, positioned above the former city court building in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England. The sculpture is set atop the classical stone fa??ade of the courthouse, overlooking carved heraldic elements below, including a central shield flanked by sculpted animals, reflecting the civic authority and legal importance of the building. The upward angle of the photograph emphasises the symbolic prominence of justice within the architectural design.
Courthouse buildings across England traditionally incorporate allegorical figures such as Lady Justice, representing fairness, balance, and the impartial application of the law. The scales symbolise the weighing of evidence, while the elevated placement of the statue reinforces the authority and moral responsibility of the legal system. Wakefield, as a historic Yorkshire city with long-standing administrative and judicial functions, reflects this tradition through its civic architecture.
The image captures themes of law, justice, governance, and public authority, as well as the craftsmanship of historic courthouse design. It is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to the British legal system, courts and justice, civic architecture, heritage buildings, and concepts of fairness, accountability, and the rule of law.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RX17PT - A car wash, or auto wash is a facility used to clean the exterior, and in some cases the interior, of cars. Car washes can be self-service, full-service (with attendants who wash the vehicle), or fully automated (possibly connected to a filling station). Car washes may also be events where people pay to have their cars washed by volunteers, often using less specialized equipment, as a fundraiser
By the mid-1960s, Hanna Enterprises established itself as the main manufacturer of car washing equipment and materials. This includes the Wrap-Around Brush, Roller-on-demand Conveyor belt, soft cloth friction washing, several ways to wash the tires, and a recirculating water system.
The 1970s introduced the automatic wheel cleaner and the polish'n'wax
Conveyor-driven/tunnel car wash
The first conveyor-driven automatic car wash appeared in Hollywood, California in 1940. Conveyor-driven automatic car washes consist of tunnel-like buildings into which customers (or attendants) drive
A vehicle exiting the friction zone of the wash. Visible are side brushes, wrap-around brushes, the conveyor, and a high-pressure rinse arch.
The car wash will typically start cleaning with chemicals called presoaks applied through special arches. CTAs, or chemical tire applicators, apply specialized formulations, which remove brake dust and build-up from the surface of the wheels and tires.
At the end of a car wash's presoak a high-pressure arch may be used to direct water at the vehicle's surface.
The car is rinsed with fresh water immediately followed by a series of extra services if required. In many car washes, the first of these services is a polish wax. After the polish wax application is typically a retractable mitter or top brush and, in some cases, side brushes or wrap-around brushes. Next is a protectant, which creates a thin protective film over a vehicle's surface

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RW3WXN - The Two Voices is a poem written by future Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom Alfred, Lord Tennyson between 1833 and 1834. It was included in his 1842 collection of Poems. Tennyson wrote the poem, titled Thoughts of a Suicide in manuscript, after the death of his friend Arthur Henry Hallam in 1833. The poem was autobiographical.
Tennyson explained, When I wrote 'The Two Voices' I was so utterly miserable, a burden to myself and to my family, that I said, 'Is life worth anything?' (Hill, 54). In the poem, one voice urges the other to suicide (There is one remedy for all repeated on lines 201 and 237)
the poet's arguments against it range from vanity to desperation, yet the voice discredits all. The poem's ending delivers no conclusions, and has been widely criticized[according to whom?]?the poet finds no internal affirmation, invoking solace outside himself (Tucker). The Two Voices was published following a ten-year span (1832-1842) in which Tennyson did not publish anything, coinciding with what some call one of the deafening silences of Victorian literary history

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWMEP3 - The Raymond Revuebar (1958?2004) was a theatre and strip club at 11 Walker's Court (now the location of The Box Soho nightclub), in the centre of London's Soho district. For many years, it was the only venue in London that offered full-frontal, on-stage nudity of the sort commonly seen in other cities in Europe and North America. Its huge brightly lit sign declaring it to be the World Centre of Erotic Entertainment made the Revuebar a local landmark.
In 1980, the Boulevard Theatre section of the venue was hired by comic actor Peter Richardson to stage his alternative comedy revue, The Comic Strip. This attracted a younger punk audience to the venue. In 1989, the Boulevard became Eddie Izzard's stand-up venue.
In the 1990s, the Revuebar struggled, with its dated image and competition from newer venues such as Spearmint Rhino and Stringfellow's. The name and leasehold was bought by G??rard Simi in 1997. The Revuebar closed on 10 June 2004

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RH8AGC - The Cathedral Church of St Peter and St Wilfrid, commonly known as Ripon Cathedral, and until 1836 known as Ripon Minster, is a cathedral in Ripon, North Yorkshire, England. Founded as a monastery by monks of the Irish tradition in the 660s, it was refounded as a Benedictine monastery by St Wilfrid in 672. The church became collegiate in the tenth century, and acted as a mother church within the large Diocese of York for the remainder of the Middle Ages. The present church is the fourth, and was built between the 13th and 16th centuries. In 1836 the church became the cathedral for the Diocese of Ripon. In 2014 the Diocese was incorporated into the new Diocese of Leeds, and the church became one of three co-equal cathedrals of the Bishop of Leeds.
The cathedral is notable architecturally for its gothic west front in the Early English style, considered one of the best of its type, as well as the Geometric east window. The seventh-century crypt of Wilfrid's church is a significant example of early Christian architecture in England. The cathedral has Grade I listed building status.
Saint Wilfrid was buried in this church near the high altar. Devastated by the English king Eadred in AD 948 as a warning to the Archbishop of York, only the crypt of Wilfrid's church survived but today this tiny 7th-century chapel rests complete beneath the later grandeur of Archbishop Roger de Pont l'Ev?que's 12th century minster. A second minster soon arose at Ripon, but it too perished ? this time in 1069 at the hands of William the Conqueror. Thomas of Bayeux, first Norman Archbishop of York, then instigated the construction of a third church, traces of which were incorporated into the later chapter house of Roger's minster
The minster finally became a cathedral (the church where the Bishop has his cathedra or throne) in 1836, the focal point of the newly created Anglican Diocese of Ripon ? the first to be established since the Reformation

I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! - Luke 12:49.
This window shows Christ bringing fire - the symbol of His Holy Spirit - to the earth.
Installed in 2005 in memory of Jean Emmerson and donated by her husband, this window in Ripon Cathedral continues a wonderful tradition of commissioning works of art for churches in memory of loved ones.

The Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell and the Bishop of Leeds, Nick Baines will be at Ripon Cathedral on October 16 for the culmination of the cathedral's 1350th anniversary celebrations.
A ledger stone, honouring the cathedral's founding father St Wilfrid, will be dedicated by Archbishop Stephen at the end of a service that will have celebrated the incredible life and mission of St Wilfrid of Ripon.
Throughout this year, in marking the 1350th anniversary of the dedication of Ripon's crypt by St Wilfrid, the cathedral community has been telling the story of this remarkable missionary bishop with art installations, son et lumieres, lectures and worship.
Wilfrid, a man of great vision, motivation, courage and faith, not only built up the church and brought countless people to faith but also helped the church on the fringes of Europe become more up to date and better connected. This became symbolized in the way he brought Roman influence to bear on the building of a stunning church in Ripon.
The ledger stone has been laid under the central tower, above the crypt dedicated by St. Wilfrid in 672AD and somewhere near where our founding saint was buried. The crypt is the oldest built fabric of any English cathedral.
The stone has been created by letter carver Charlotte Howarth from Making Marks in Norfolk, who worked round the clock for four weeks to complete the work on time. Charlotte's previous projects include the carving of the gilt lettering into the oak for the Remember Me memorial portico entrance at St Paul's Cathedral, dedicated to those who died as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Carving the ledger stone for Ripon Cathedral was highly skilled and physically demanding work, using an extremely hard stone called Stanhoe Framp. Charlotte said: You become emotionally involved with a project when you work on it.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R9J0E8 - A prisoner transport vehicle, informally known as a Sweat Box amongst British prisoners, is a specially designed or retrofitted vehicle, usually a van or bus, used to transport prisoners from one secure area, such as a prison or courthouse, to another. Less commonly, aircraft, railcars or vessels are also similarly fitted. These vehicles must be highly protected and may feature bars or wire mesh over the windows, bulletproof glass, segregated prisoner compartments, and additional seating for escorting officers.
Function
Due to their relatively low security and potential isolation from assistance while en route, police or additional corrections vehicles sometimes escort high-risk transports. With this in mind, vehicles may also be equipped with radio communications, global positioning units, additional restraints and weapons, and other emergency equipment. To add additional security, prisoners are typically restrained while in transport and may be physically secured to the vehicle, handcuffed while in the secured area, or a combination of both.
Prisoner transport vehicles may be operated by police services (see paddywagon), correctional services, field officers, court services, federal agencies such as the United States Marshals Service, or be contracted to private security companies. Prison buses were widely used in the late 1900s to transport prisoners, especially to state prisons across the US. They were usually quite secure and offered no way of escape for transporting prisoners.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ33C - The Crumlin Road Courthouse, commonly referred to as The Crum, located on Crumlin Road in North Belfast, Northern Ireland, postcode BT14 6ST. The image shows the exterior of the nineteenth-century courthouse, with ornate stone detailing and iron railings in the foreground, reflecting the building's imposing civic design.
Completed in the Victorian period, the courthouse formed part of a significant complex of judicial and penal buildings in this area of Belfast, most notably its proximity to Crumlin Road Gaol. The courthouse played a central role in Northern Ireland's legal system and is closely associated with key periods of social and political history, including the Troubles.
Architecturally, the building demonstrates the grandeur and authority typical of Victorian civic architecture, with decorative fa??ades, classical elements, and elevated positioning above the street. Over time, security measures such as fencing and restricted access have become part of the site's visual character, reflecting changing uses and concerns.
Now repurposed as a visitor attraction and event venue, the Crumlin Road Courthouse forms part of Belfast's wider heritage tourism offer, interpreting the city's judicial history alongside its complex social past. Photographed in daylight under a partly cloudy sky, the image documents an important historic landmark within North Belfast and is suitable for editorial use relating to architecture, history, justice, and urban regeneration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RC3CKK - The Northern Ireland Housing Executive is the public housing authority for Northern Ireland. It is Northern Ireland's largest social housing landlord, and the enforcing authority for those parts of housing orders that involve houses with multiple occupants, houses that are unfit, and housing conditions. The NIHE employed 2,865 persons as of 31 March 2020
Prior to the establishment of the Housing Executive, public housing in Northern Ireland was managed primarily by local councils. Only ratepayers and their spouses could vote in council elections - sub-tenants, lodgers, and adults living with their parents could not - so allocation of housing was distorted for political ends. This largely took the form of discrimination against Catholics to ensure Unionist control of councils, opposition to which was a major plank of the Northern Ireland civil rights movement of the late 1960s. Following civil disturbances in 1968?69, a commission appointed by the Northern Ireland government and led by Lord Cameron found that grievances concerning housing were the first general cause of the disorders which it investigated. Lord Cameron's report concluded:
A rising sense of continuing injustice and grievance among large sections of the Catholic population in Northern Ireland, in particular in Derry and Dungannon, in respect of (i) inadequacy of housing provision by certain local authorities (ii) unfair methods of allocation of houses built and let by such authorities, in particular
refusals and omissions to adopt a 'points' system in determining priorities and making allocations (iii) misuse in certain cases of discretionary powers of allocation of houses in order to perpetuate Unionist control of the local authority
The Housing Executive was established by the Housing Executive Act (Northern Ireland) 1971. A single all-purpose housing authority for Northern Ireland had been advocated as early as 1964 by the Northern Ireland Labour Party

The distillery's products include the Bushmills Original and Black Bush blends, as well as the 10-, 12-, 16-, and 21-year-old Bushmills Single Malts. To celebrate the 400th anniversary of distilling starting in the area the distillery released a unique whiskey called the 1608 which included crystal malt. The distillery draws its water, not from the River Bush itself, but from a tributary known as Saint Columbs Rill.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R72E6N - Leading contractor developer for the social housing sector, Lane End Developments Construction, has gone into administration.
The Warrington-based business operates across the North west of England and Wales.
Managing directors of insolvency firm Quantuma Jeremy Woodside and Frank Ofonagoro, both of the firm's Manchester office, have been appointed joint administrators.
The company was set up in 2016 and has built more than 1,100. It currently has live projects on 17 different sites - which aimed to create 1,700 new homes - employing 118 staff.
Current projects include delivering a 177 affordable homes scheme in Llandudno in partnership with ClwydAlyn and a 60 home scheme with Torus in Wigan.
In its last financial year, to the end of May, 2022, the company generated revenues of around ?81m with a pre-tax profit of nearly ?250,000.
Mr Woodside said:This is obviously a very difficult and uncertain time for the company, its employees and suppliers, and its wider stakeholders.
We're currently working alongside potential funders and senior management to assess the options available to them to restructure Lane End Developments Construction and allow it to continue to operate and deliver housing projects.
The contractor had been developing schemes with a string of housing associations, including L&Q, Jigsaw Homes and Onward, when it announced its collapse in April.
At the time, the three landlords said they were disappointed and concerned about the firm's collapse, but none were named in the list of creditors that are owed money.
The administrator's proposal shows that for the year end of 31 May 2022, Lane End had a turnover of more than ?81m, but its profit for the year was less than ?178,000. Tangible assets were just over ?1m.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WE87 - This image shows the central courtyard and twin-domed buildings of the Old Royal Naval College at Maritime Greenwich in South East London. The grand baroque architecture forms one of the most recognisable historic ensembles in the capital and sits at the heart of the Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Designed primarily by Sir Christopher Wren and Nicholas Hawksmoor, the Old Royal Naval College was originally built as the Royal Hospital for Seamen in the late 17th century before later serving as the Royal Naval College. Today, the site is preserved as a major cultural and heritage destination, frequently associated with the nearby National Maritime Museum, which lies just beyond the buildings shown.
The symmetrical domes, colonnades, and formal lawns create a strong sense of order and monumentality, while people walking, sitting, and relaxing on the grass highlight the site's role as a public space as well as a historic monument. The open courtyard also frames protected sightlines toward Greenwich Park and the Queen's House, reinforcing the carefully planned urban landscape.
Photographed in daylight under a blue sky with scattered clouds, the image conveys the scale, elegance, and accessibility of one of Britain's most important maritime heritage locations. It is well suited to editorial use covering London history, architecture, UNESCO sites, tourism, education, and Britain's naval and scientific legacy.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNJX - This image shows the exterior signage and vehicle forecourt of Rybrook Volvo Warrington, located on Winwick Road in Warrington, Cheshire (postcode WA2 8HS). The blue Volvo-branded sign directs customers to the main entrance and parking area, with new Volvo vehicles displayed in the foreground and the modern showroom building visible behind.
Rybrook Volvo Warrington forms part of the Rybrook Group, a major UK automotive retail group representing premium car manufacturers. Volvo dealerships such as this offer new and approved-used vehicles, servicing, and aftersales support, and increasingly showcase electric and hybrid models as part of the brand's transition toward lower-emission mobility.
The clean architectural design and consistent corporate branding reflect contemporary automotive retail standards, where customer experience, visibility, and forecourt presentation play a key role in vehicle sales. The image documents the dealership as a commercial business environment rather than a motor show or promotional event.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited to editorial use covering automotive retail, car dealerships, premium vehicle brands, electric vehicle transition, UK business premises, and the modern car-buying experience.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R0DWW2 - As Masham celebrated the King's Coronation, people in the small market town have spoken of hopes a buyer can be found for the Black Sheep Brewery.
Last week, Black Sheep announced administrators had been appointed after being hit very hard by the pandemic and a rise in costs.
The company, which employs around 50 members of staff, was founded in 1992 and has become a tourist hotspot bringing a significant amount of footfall to the town.
One local business owner told the Stray Ferret people are worried about a potential loss of income for their own businesses if the brewery doesn't survive.
Tim Ledbetter, owner of Bentley's of Masham, said:
With it being such a big employer, there is then a big knock-on effect.
We get a lot of trade from visitors of Black Sheep ? it could be detrimental.
The brewery reported turnover of ?14.3 million as of March 31, 2022, according to its most recent accounts. However, it also stated a pre-tax loss of ?1.18 million, compared to ?862,871 profit in the previous year

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PGAYND - Cherwell Valley services is a Moto motorway service station on the M40 motorway at Stoke Lyne, near Bicester, in Oxfordshire, England. In August 2011 it was rated as 3 stars by quality assessors at Visit England
however, it is unknown whether this was a rating of the new or temporary building.
Location
The services are located at junction 10 of the M40, and are accessed from a roundabout on the junction.
Despite its name, it is neither in the valley nor the drainage basin of the Cherwell, but rather beside a small east-flowing stream that becomes part of the Padbury Brook before joining the Great Ouse at Buckingham.
History
The former main building
It was opened in the spring of 1994 and gave the 89-mile motorway its first service station, more than three years after its completion. The site was previously occupied by a toilet facility, which had been there since the motorway's opening.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MKF8NX - Gerard Winstanley House which was formerly the towns magistrates court and police station but is now the home of a multi-arts thriving creative community.
It is a Grade II listed building dating back to around 1887 and of course, the first thing that hits you is the brickwork. The official records describe it as red brick in Flemish bond with sandstone dressings and a slate roof.
The buildings stand on Crawford Street opposite the small little garden that belongs to the Parish Church of All Saints and it really does cut a very imposing figure from a seat in that garden.
But the dramatic architecture doesn't stop there - not only do we have the amazing red brickwork and intricate dressings, but we have towers and turrets too! The spiked tower at the bottom end of Crawford Street rises high above the brickwork pointing right up to the often dark skies above.
This is where the main entrance to the courts was, its large welcoming doorway still a big feature of the facade. The symmetry and absolute craftsmanship of the building never fail to impress
These days the courts and police station have long gone, updated and replaced elsewhere in the town and everyone wondered what might happen to this magnificent building.
Would it go to rack and ruin like so many other buildings in the town, or would there be new life breathed into it, would it get a second chance?
The answer was firmly YES as the building was purchased and occupied by The Old Courts who have transformed the place and have refurbished the interior (still an ongoing project) to provide Art Galleries, a Theatre, a Live Music venue, a Cafe, a Record store, Band rehearsal rooms, Conference and Events space and even a bar.
Bailiff Bar is at the very bottom of the building around the corner from Crawford Street and on to King Street West.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M95NF8 - St George's Hall is a building on St George's Place, opposite Lime Street railway station in the centre of Liverpool, England. Opened in 1854, it is a Neoclassical building which contains concert halls and law courts, and is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. On the east side of the hall, between it and the railway station, is St George's Plateau and on the west side are St John's Gardens. The hall is included in the William Brown Street conservation area.
In 1969 the architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner expressed his opinion that it is one of the finest neo-Grecian buildings in the world, although the building is known for its use of Roman sources as well as Greek. In 2004, the hall and its surrounding area were recognised as part of Liverpool's World Heritage Site until its revocation of World Heritage status in 2021. The Liverpool Register Office and Coroner's Court have been based in the hall since 2012.
In 1838 the foundation stone was laid to commemorate the coronation of Queen Victoria.
A competition was announced on 5 March 1839 via an advertisement in The Times to design the hall, first prize was 250 guineas, second prize 150 guineas. By July more than eighty entries had been received, and the competition was won by Harvey Lonsdale Elmes, a London architect aged 25 years, the second prize went to George Alexander of London.
Elmes died in 1847 and the work was continued by John Weightman, Corporation Surveyor, and Robert Rawlinson, structural engineer, until in 1851 Charles Cockerell was appointed architect. Cockerell was largely responsible for the decoration of the interiors. The eventual cost of the building exceeded ?300,000[11] (roughly equivalent to ?33,000,000 in 2019). During the 2000s a major restoration of the hall took place costing ?23m and it was officially reopened on 23 April 2007 by Prince Charles. The magnificent sculpture of the exterior was by William Grinsell Nicholl.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KF6R7X - The foundation stone for the new Courts of Justice was laid on 16 July 1890 by Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale.
The Magistrates' Court was built between 1890 and 1892 to the designs of the architects Huon Arthur Matear and Henry Bloomfield Bare. The quantity surveyor was Charles Wise of Liverpool and the contract for construction was let to Parker and Sharpe of York. The cost of construction was ?17,050 (equivalent to ?1,972,600 in 2021).

The assembly Room on the upper floor was added later. It became the county court building and this is the name by which it is best remembered.
When the county court moved to the new combined courts building, this building was put on the market and became a night club, called Chancellors, and currently goes under the name of Walkabout.
The main court room furniture was given by the purchasers to Wolverhampton Law School, at the University, where it was reassembled as a moot court.

It was released on 28/09/1987 by Rough Trade Records, several months after the group had disbanded. All of the songs were composed by Johnny Marr, with lyrics written and sung by Morrissey.
The album reached number two on the UK Albums Chart, staying in the chart for 17 weeks. The album also became an international success, peaking at number 16 in the European Albums Chart
from sales covering the 18 major European countries, staying in that chart for nine weeks. The album was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry on 1 October 1987 and also by the Recording Industry Association of America on 19 September 1990
The album takes its title from Manchester's notorious Strangeways Prison (now called HM Prison Manchester), whilst the line Borstal, here we come is taken from the novel Billy Liar. Strangeways, of course, is that hideous Victorian monstrosity of a prison operating 88 to a cell, Morrissey has said

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JMD5NK - HISTORY: The police station, formerly Willow House, was built in Badbrook, on the rural edge of Stroud, probably in the early C18. Willow House was converted to a police station in 1858 to the designs of James Medland of Gloucester (the County Surveyor between 1857 and 1889). Medland designed most of the county's eleven purpose-built courts and police stations constructed between the 1860s and 1880s. Extensions to Stroud police station, designed by Medland, were carried out in 1885-6 when a cell block, stables and an office block to the north-west of the station were built. The office block was converted to a Petty Sessional Court in 1908 by Robert Phillips, architect to the Gloucestershire Education Committee. Other extensions and alterations were also carried out in the C20. The police station (now called Willow Court) and the stabling behind (now called Willow House) were converted to business use in the late C20. The court became the Liberal Club, until the early C21.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MN7PCH - An 18m high mural adorns the gable end wall of the old magistrates' court which now forms part of the Pyramid arts centre at the corner of Museum Street and Winmarleigh Street.
'Reflection of Warrington' was created as part of a partnership between Wired Young Carers, Culture Warrington, Spearfish Arts and renowned illustrator Will Barras.
The project cost ?6,000 and was funded by a local trust foundation.
Children, aged between eight and 15, were given a break from their responsibilities caring for loved ones to help work with Will on the design.
The idea was to find a new way for young people to engage with the town's history.
The group decided on a range of images including iconic structures such as the Golden Gates and the Barley Mow, famous faces like Jonathan Blackburne, the Lord of the Manor of Warrington famous for growing the north west's first pineapple at Orford Hall, and the Mad Hatter's tea party scene from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.
Scenes illustrating the town's industrial heritage are also featured alongside a depiction of the ill-fated RMS Tayleur which was built in Warrington.
Will and the team spent 46 hours on the street art design over six days using 25 litres of emulsion and 100 spray cans.
The project has been around a year in the making with a workshop in February to gather ideas on how the mural should look.
Planning permission to paint the wall was approved at the end of September when Historic England raised no objections.

In the early 1800 (1805 ? 1808 ?ish) a house stood at the corner of London Road and Walton Road which was the home of Edward Fenna and his family who was the Parish Constable. Outside the house were the Parish Stocks (removed 1850). The house was called the Stone Jug. Fenna would not have had a uniform and was unpaid for the work he did, which was not a lot. He would walk the streets with a lantern at night and have a rattle for attracting attention. He did get paid expenses for duties such as relief of the poor, flogging people and putting people in the stocks, etc.
In 1864 a single storey building was built on the existing site and there was one Sergeant and one PC for the village. The area outside the Police Station (Victoria Square) was called ?Pigeon Bank' and belonged to the Police Station. Every year the fairground from Warrington (Silcocks) would stop at Stockton Heath on their way to Stoke. With the permission of Sgt. Norris they set up their tents, Dobbie horses (roundabouts), Coconut Shy's etc. It is recorded that one year Sgt. Norris' son who was ?of age' (over 12 generally) came out of the Police Station, jumped on a Dobbie Horse and broke it.
In 1911 that Police Station was closed and demolished with a new Police Station opening the following year. The dates are to be seen on the headers of the drainpipes.
The new Station incorporated a Magistrate's Court and living quarters for the Inspector. Gas lamps, some of which can still be seen in the cells, illuminated the Police Station. The Inspector's house that was the area now used by the writing room, gents toilet and kitchen and upstairs the waiting room toilets and Court two. The Inspector's daughter who lived until recently in Stockton Heath recalled that her bedroom was the Court Waiting Room. After she came home from school she would have to clean and polish the Court floors for no payment.

These vehicles were usually painted black or a very dark blue. In the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand and the United States, a police wagon was also sometimes called a Black Maria (/m???ra?/ m?-RY-?). The origin of this term is equally uncertain. The name Black Maria is common for race horses beginning with an 1832 appearance in Niles Weekly Register (Oct. 10) and then again in Colburn's New Monthly Magazine and Humorist (1841). The OED lists the first usage as the Boston Evening Traveller from 1847 which mentions them as a new type of wagon. An example from Philadelphia was published in 1852. Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable suggests the name came from Maria Lee, a large and fearsome black keeper of a sailors' boarding house whom the police would call on for help with difficult prisoners. The French detective novel Monsieur Lecoq, published in 1868 by ??mile Gaboriau, uses the term Black Maria when referring to a police van. In his 1949 song Saturday Night Fish Fry, Louis Jordan mentions a Black Maria.
The term is still used today in parts of Britain for the vehicle that transports prisoners from gaol to court, appearing in the songs Guns of Brixton by The Clash, Singing for the Lonely by Robbie Williams, The Curse of Millhaven by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Adios Hermanos by Paul Simon. Frequently, blackened-windowed buses are also used for the same purpose.[8] In the 1950s, many police forces in the United Kingdom, including the Metropolitan Police, used half-ton Morris Commercial vans, painted black, as Black Marias.[citation needed]
The term also exists in Norwegian, where the same vehicle is called maja or svartemaja (alt. -marje, -marja), originating from Black Maria, in Icelandic as Svarta Mar??a and in Finnish as mustamaija. In Serbian, Croatian and Slovene, it is marica (with a small m), while Marica with a capital M is a diminutive of several female names.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RG98NT - The Refuge Assurance Company Ltd. was a life insurance and pensions company based in England. It was founded by James Proctor and George Robins in Dukinfield, Cheshire in 1858. The company was originally known by the unwieldy name of the Refuge Friend in Deed Life Assurance and Sick Fund Friendly Society.
From 1895 until 1987, its head office was the magnificent Grade II* listed, Refuge Assurance Building on Oxford Street in central Manchester, now used as the Principal Hotel. In 1987, the company decided to move out of the city centre to new, purpose-built, offices in the grounds of Fulshaw Hall in Wilmslow, around 12 miles south of the old Refuge Building. In October 1996, the Refuge Assurance Company merged with United Friendly to form the United Assurance Group (UAG).
After disappointing performances following the merger, the United Assurance Group was first approached by Britannic Assurance in November 1999, and then by Royal London Mutual Insurance Society in February 2000. Following successful talks, Royal London took over UAG for ?1.6 billion.
The Refuge Assurance Building, Manchester, on Oxford Road, was the company's head office between 1895 and 1987

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBAPPX - Arrears (or arrearage) is a legal term for the part of a debt that is overdue after missing one or more required payments. The amount of the arrears is the amount accrued from the date on which the first missed payment was due. The term is usually used in relation with periodically recurring payments such as rent, bills, royalties (or other contractual payments), and child support.
Payment in arrear is a payment made after a service has been provided, as distinct from in advance, which are payments made at the start of a period. For instance, rent is usually paid in advance, but mortgages in arrear (the interest for the period is due at the end of the period). Employees' salaries are usually paid in arrear. Payment at the end of a period is referred to by the singular arrear, to distinguish from past due payments. For example, a housing tenant who is obliged to pay rent at the end of each month, is said to pay rent in arrear, while a tenant who has not paid rental due for 30 days is said to be one month in arrears. Precise usage may differ slightly (e.g. in arrear or in arrears for the same situation) in different countries.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PE1J51 - The Berkeley Arms is a Grade II listed building. There have been many improvements to the premises over at least 800 years, the surviving oldest part being a 12th century barn, now a medieval style dinning area.
The cellars are built in very old stone. The very substantial main chimney supports many timbers of the newer front part of the premisses, suggesting alteration works around 1550.
Berkeley Arms Tewkesbury
Before the 1850's the Berkeley Arms was known as the 'Queen's Arms', however the former landlord 'Sam Pearse' was made bankrupt in 1843. He had borrowed ?2,000 against the pub, much more than it's value at the time.
Berkeley Arms Tewkesbury
No mention of the 'Queen's Arms' appears thereafter, but in 1849 a tenant called Hathaway occupies the premises. Licence records show he was registered as the Landlord of the 'Berkeley Arms' in 1869.
Wadworth's Berkeley Arms Tewkesbury With the increase in cycle touring in the 1930's, the Berkeley Arms became an 'Offical Stop-over' for the British Cyclists' Touring Club in the days of 'cloth caps' and arty 'silk mufflers'.
In the 1960's a string of here today gone tomorrow tenants led to a decline in trade, the Berkeley Arms almost closed. This quickly achieved what Temperance Movements had failed to do over many decades.
Around 1969 a new floor was put down in the bar, to do so workmen had to remove 7 layers of old floor going way back in time, no archaeological Time Team in those days.
The Berkeley Arm's fortunes were restored by Philip and Ruby Jones over their combined 23 year tenancy beginning in 1969.
In the 1980's an old sealed up back room was opened, the floor was covered in a deep layer of old 19th century books. These may relate to a clearing of cupboards and discovery in 1896 of various deeds, wills and other documents relating to the 'Queen's Arms' and a former town inn called the 'Quart Pot' (pulled down in 1837).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCGHMA - Leeds Town Hall was built between 1853 and 1858 on The Headrow (formerly Park Lane), Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, to a design by architect Cuthbert Brodrick. It was planned to include law courts, a council chamber, a public hall, a suite of ceremonial entertaining rooms and municipal offices. With the building of the Civic Hall in 1933 some of those functions moved away and it became essentially a public hall and law courts.
Leeds Town Hall is one of the largest town halls in the United Kingdom and as of 2017 it is the thirteenth tallest building in Leeds. It was opened by Queen Victoria, in a lavish ceremony in 1858 as Leeds celebrated the completion of an important civic structure. It is a Grade I listed building.
With a height of 225 feet (68.6 m) it was the tallest building in Leeds from its construction in 1858 until 1966, when it lost the title to the Park Plaza Hotel, which stands 8 metres (26 ft) taller at 77 metres (253 ft). It has held the title longer than any other building, a record 108 years. The distinctive clock tower, which serves as a symbol of Leeds was not part of the initial design but was added by Brodrick in 1856 as the civic leaders sought to make an even grander statement.

I have noticed before how this style was popular in the early-20th century

The revival of the Altrincham Market is nothing short of remarkable. From 1290 (yes, 1290!) the market had been at the centre of community life in Altrincham. Throughout the centuries, the market would have been where townsfolk gathered to buy goods, make a living, and spend time in the company of their neighbours.
And yet, the second half of the 20th century brought a period of stagnation. With the fortunes of the town on the downturn and the population size decreasing year over year, the historic market was being run by the council with little love or care. In fact, around a decade ago, Altrincham was voted as having the worse high street in Britain.
So, what has changed?
Well, Nick Johnson came onto the scene. Nick was a property developer and saw something in Altrincham that others failed to spot. In 2013, he won the contract to run the market and quickly set about changing the face of it and in turn Altrincham.
Nick gave the Victorian building a makeover. Cleaning it from top to bottom and restoring some features that had been neglected. He then got to work contacting some of the area's best, local food vendors.
Nick did the same in Manchester city centre with the Mackie Mayor food hall, the big sister of Altrincham Market House. We previously wrote about Mackie Mayor here.
Food And Drink At Altrincham Market House
Since it reopened in 2014, locals and visitors have filled the food hall week after week, and it should come as no surprise ? the food on offer is second to none!
Market House is home to 10 indie food stalls, including Honest Crust, Wolfhouse Kitchen, Tender Cow, Jack in the Box, Reserve Wines, Great North Pie Co., Sam Joseph, and Market House Coffee.
Jack in the Box is an award-winning producer of real ale and cider that operate across the Mackie Mayor and Altrincham

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCGHKC - Leeds Town Hall was built between 1853 and 1858 on The Headrow (formerly Park Lane), Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, to a design by architect Cuthbert Brodrick.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GJBPMD - St George's Hall is on Lime Street in the centre of the English city of Liverpool, opposite Lime Street railway station. It is a building in Neoclassical style which contains concert halls and law courts, and is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. On the east side of the hall, between it and the railway station, is St George's Plateau and on the west side are St John's Gardens. The hall is included in the William Brown Street conservation area.
In 1969 the architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner expressed his opinion that it is one of the finest neo-Grecian buildings in the world although the building is known for its use of Roman sources as well as Greek ones. In 2004, the hall and its surrounding area were recognised as part of Liverpool's World Heritage Site.

In February 2015, the council ordered Andrew Fannon, who owns the pub on Winwick Street, to remove the addition to the Grade II listed building by October 29.
Along with interviews with those involved in the case, parts of the latest planning committee meeting was broadcast on Damned Designs: Don't Demolish My Home.
A 'Save Our Shed' campaign was launched on Facebook last year as the conservatory is popular with Warrington Wolves fans on match days.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED4KYM - Around ten Walsall College students and apprentices will be offered the unique chance to put their stamp on the new Walsall Business and Sports Hub (WBSH) scheme. It follows an agreement made between the College and Interserve Construction (part of the international support services and construction group Interserve), which is leading on the development. There is also an opportunity for at least 20 students to get involved in work placements in the wider Interserve operation including business administration and project-based work experience.
Students will start their placements with Interserve by January and they will see both traditional and modern construction techniques whilst working closely alongside project and support staff as well as learning valuable employability skills.
Construction work, which started at the end of August, remains on schedule ahead of the official opening in September 2015. Heavy goods vehicles are expected to make the first delivery of steelwork this week as the new build begins to take shape.
The state-of-the-art development, adjacent to Walsall College's main ?64 million Wisemore Campus on Littleton Street West, will include a business incubation centre for start-up businesses, sports hall with badminton courts to Sport England standards, dance and fitness studios, sports training and injury clinic and a fine dining restaurant. It forms part of Walsall Council's long-term ?400 million Gigaport initiative, which is creating business and office development along the ring road corridor.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED8PR4 - Carlisle railway station, also known as Carlisle Citadel station, is a railway station which serves the city of Carlisle, Cumbria, England, and is a major station on the West Coast Main Line, lying 102 miles (164 km) south of Glasgow Central, and 299 miles (481 km) north of London Euston.
It is also the northern terminus of the celebrated Settle and Carlisle Line ? notionally (and historically) a continuation of the Midland Main Line from Leeds, Sheffield and ultimately London St Pancras. It is a Grade II* listed building
The station was built in 1847, in a neo-Tudor style to the designs of William Tite.[2] It was then one of a number of stations in the city - the others were at Crown Street (Maryport & Carlisle Railway) and London Road (Newcastle and Carlisle Railway) - but had become the main one by 1851
it was expanded and extended in 1875-1876, with the arrival of the Midland Railway (who became the seventh different company to serve it).
The Beeching Axe fell with very significant rail closures including the former North British Railway lines to Silloth (closed on 7 September 1964) and Edinburgh via Galashiels (the Waverley Line, closed on 6 January 1969). The axe cut off the Castle Douglas and Dumfries Railway and Portpatrick Railway in 1965 resulting in an adverse mileage increase via the Glasgow South Western Line to reach Stranraer Harbour and thus Northern Ireland.
The layout has also undergone few changes of any significance other than the singling of the ex-NER Tyne Valley route down to London Road Junction as part of the 1972-3 re-signalling scheme associated with WCML electrification.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DED3NW - Canongate Tolbooth is a historic landmark of the Old Town section of Edinburgh, Scotland (U.K.) built in 1591 as a tolbooth, that is, a courthouse, burgh jail and meeting place, for the, then, separate burgh of the Canongate. The building is now occupied by The People's Story Museum and is protected as a category A listed building
In 1875 the City Architect, Robert Morham completely restored and remodeled the exterior giving it back its medieval look (based on Gordon of Rothiemay's map of 1647). This work included remodeling the interior to create museum spaces.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DEJMNE - Barrington Court is a Tudor manor house begun around 1538 and completed in the late 1550s, with a vernacular 17th-century stable court (1675), situated in Barrington, near Ilminster, Somerset, England.
The house was owned by several families by 1745 after which it fell into disrepair and was used as a tenant farm. After repair by Alfred Hoare Powell, it was the first house acquired by the National Trust, in 1907, on the recommendation of the antiquarian Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley. In the 1920s the house was renovated, the stable block turned into a residence and several outbuildings, gardens and gateways constructed.
The house was originally surrounded by a medieval deer park and in the 17th century a formal garden was constructed. This had largely disappeared until a new garden was laid out by Gertrude Jekyll in an Arts and Crafts-style in the first half of the 20th century. It now contains walled kitchen gardens, fruit orchards and ornamental gardens.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM9AW0 - The George or George Inn is a public house established in the medieval period on Borough High Street in Southwark, London, owned and leased by the National Trust. It is located about 250 metres (820 ft) from the south side of the River Thames near London Bridge and is the only surviving galleried London coaching inn.
The first map of Southwark (Duchy of Lancaster ca1543) clearly shows it marked as 'Gorge'. It was formerly known as the George and Dragon, named after the legend of Saint George and the Dragon. There were many such inns in this part of London. Probably the most famous was The Tabard where, in 1388, Chaucer began The Canterbury Tales. In 1677 the George was rebuilt after a serious fire that destroyed most of medieval Southwark. The Tabard was also rebuilt after the same fire, but was demolished in the late nineteenth century.
It is known that galleried inns were used for Elizabethan theatrical productions (Inn-yard theatre).
Later, the Great Northern Railway used the George as a depot and pulled down two of its fronts to build warehousing. Now just the south face remains.
The George was one of the many famous coaching inns in the days of Charles Dickens. Dickens in fact visited the George and referred to it in Little Dorrit.
The building is partly . The ground floor is divided into a number of connected bars. The Parliament Bar used to be a waiting room for passengers on coaches. The Middle Bar was the Coffee Room, which was frequented by Charles Dickens. The bedrooms, now a restaurant, were upstairs in the galleried part of the building.
It is one of only two coaching inns to survive in Greater London, and is the only galleried example. The White Hart is immediately to the north, and the site of The Tabard immediately to the south (now Talbot Yard). The building is Grade I listed, and is listed in CAMRA's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HD5E - King's College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, England. Formally named The King's College of Our Lady and Saint Nicholas in Cambridge, the college lies on the River Cam and faces out onto King's Parade in the centre of the city.
King's was founded in 1441 by Henry VI, soon after he had founded its sister college in Eton. However, the King's plans for the college were disrupted by the Wars of the Roses and resultant scarcity of funds, and his eventual deposition. Little progress was made on the project until in 1508 Henry VII began to take an interest in the college, most likely as a political move to legitimise his new position. The building of the college's chapel, begun in 1446, was finally finished in 1544 during the reign of Henry VIII.
King's College Chapel is regarded as one of the greatest examples of late Gothic English architecture. It has the world's largest fan-vault, and the chapel's stained-glass windows and wooden chancel screen are considered some of the finest from their era.
The building is seen as emblematic of Cambridge. The chapel's choir, composed of male students at King's and choristers from the nearby King's College School, is one of the most accomplished and renowned in the world. Every year on Christmas Eve the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols (a service devised specifically for King's by college dean Eric Milner-White) is broadcast from the chapel to millions of listeners worldwide

Albert Greene (born April 13, 1946) better known as Al Green, is an American gospel and soul music singer.
In 2005, Rolling Stone named him no 65 in their list of the '100 Greatest Artists of All Time'. The nomination, written by Justin Timberlake, stated that 'people are born to do certain things, and Al was born to make us smile.'
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted Green in 1995, referring to him as 'one of the most gifted purveyors of soul music.' Green has sold more than 20 million records. In 2000, Green published Take Me to the River, a book discussing his career. Green received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002.
I was introduced to Al Green via the cover of this track by talking Heads ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=anjT71N4PGM ). There are some great compilations out there to checkout more of his compositions.

Inns Quay is where you find Four Courts, across Dublin's river Liffey.
The Four Courts was built between 1786 and 1796 by renowned architect James Gandon, while the finishing touches to the arcades and wings were completed in 1802. The lands were previously used by the King's Inns. The building originally housed the four courts of Chancery, King's Bench, Exchequer, and Common Pleas, hence the name of the building.
A major revision in the court system in the late nineteenth century saw these courts replaced, but the building has retained its historic name. This courts system remained until 1924, when the new Irish Free State introduced a new courts structure, replacing the old High Court of Ireland, the Lord Chief Justice of Ireland and the Lord Chancellor of Ireland with a new Supreme Court presided over by the Chief Justice and a High Court of Justice, presided over by the President of the High Court.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HCYE - The Guildhall and jail on St Peter's Hill in Grantham was commissioned in 1866 by Mayor Thomas Winter after criminal Jesse Dale, who was serving 15 years for stealing, twice walked out of the town's original jail in 1864.
This original Guildhall and jail building stood on the corner of Guildhall Street and High Street and dated from 1787. After Jesse's second escape, the governor at the time William Mayer was sacked and a government inspector condemned the building. The inmates had to be sent to Lincoln. The site of the demolished Guildhall was bought by the Stamford, Boston and Spalding Bank (later Barclays) and is now home to the Goose at the Bank pub.
On the current Guildhall site was an old school ? The Firs ? housed in a former town house. This and the adjoining land were bought for ?2,100. Lincoln architect William Watkins drew up the design for the new building and the work was carried out Mr Wartnaby, of Little Gonerby, for ?7,260.

The university played an important role leading the city of Edinburgh to its reputation as a chief intellectual centre during the Age of Enlightenment, and helped give the city the nickname of the Athens of the north.
Alumni of the university include some of the major figures of modern history. The founding of the University is attributed to Bishop Robert Reid of St Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall, Orkney, who left the funds on his death in 1558 that ultimately provided the University's endowment. The University was established by a Royal Charter granted by James VI in 1582, becoming the fourth Scottish university at a time when the neighbour neighbour to the south, England, had only two..
The Guardian University Guide 2008 ranked the University of Edinburgh as follows:..7th in the UK overall.1st in the UK for computer science.1st in the UK for physics.1st in the UK for Nursing.2nd in the UK for medicine..A very outstanding achievment and the uni resides in some outstanding architectural monuments, such as Old College as seen here..

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T09JG6 - Long Descriptive Narrative (Editorial / Documentary)
Close view of an official HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) sign mounted on the exterior of The Old Post Office, 2 The Esplanade, Rochdale OL16 1AE, Greater Manchester. The brushed metal plaque features the Royal Coat of Arms, symbolising the authority of the UK justice system and the administration of courts and tribunals in England and Wales.
HMCTS is an executive agency of the UK Ministry of Justice, responsible for the operation of criminal, civil and family courts, as well as tribunals covering areas such as immigration, employment and social security. The service plays a central role in ensuring access to justice, managing court buildings, listings, staff and digital case systems.
In recent years, HMCTS has been closely associated with wide-ranging court modernisation and reform programmes, including court closures, estate rationalisation and the expansion of digital hearings. These changes have generated significant public and professional debate, with supporters highlighting efficiency and accessibility gains, while critics raise concerns about local access, delays and the impact on vulnerable court users.
The Rochdale site reflects the reuse of historic civic buildings for contemporary public administration, blending heritage architecture with modern government functions. Images such as this are frequently used editorially to illustrate stories relating to justice policy, legal reform, court accessibility, public service delivery and the operation of the UK state.
Photographed in daylight with the official signage clearly legible, the image offers strong editorial value for coverage of law, governance, public administration and the justice system in England and Wales.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P6JHKB - Queen Elizabeth II Law Courts, in Derby Square, Liverpool, are operated by His Majesty's Courts and Tribunals Service. The building is used by the Crown Court, the Magistrates' Court, Liverpool District Probate Registry and the Liverpool Youth Court
Until the mid-1980s, all Crown Court cases were heard in St George's Hall. However, as the number of court cases in Liverpool grew, it became necessary to commission a more modern courthouse for both criminal and civil matters: the site selected by the Lord Chancellor's Department had been occupied by Liverpool Castle between the 13th and 18th century.
The new building was commissioned by the now-defunct Property Services Agency, who were seeking a design which expressed authority and power.[6] Construction of the new building started in 1973. It was designed by Farmer and Dark[8] in the brutalist style, built with vertically ribbed pre-cast concrete panels in dark, reddish tones, and was opened in 1984.
Hearings of the Liverpool Magistrates Court, which had been held at the courthouse in Dale Street, transferred to the Queen Elizabeth II Law Courts in 2015.[10]
The design features towers on the north and south sides which were intended to echo Liverpool Castle. Pollard and Pevsner describe the architecture as hulking and dispiriting, but richly sculptural. The front facade of the building features a four metres wide version of the Royal coat of arms. Cast in concrete, it was designed by British sculptor Richard Kindersley. The interior, which accommodates 28 court rooms on 10 storeys, contains strips of brown ceramic tiles in strips between the staircase tower windows

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R0DWWH - As Masham celebrated the King's Coronation, people in the small market town have spoken of hopes a buyer can be found for the Black Sheep Brewery.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P307AA - Altrincham Market House: Things To Do In Manchester - A Community Revitalised? Read more at https://manchesterbites.com/things-to-do-in-manchester-altrincham-market-house/

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXW9T - A wide view of the Old College buildings at the University of Edinburgh, photographed within the formal courtyard on South College Street in the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town. The neoclassical sandstone architecture, arranged around a rectangular lawn, is dominated by the central domed structure and symmetrical wings that frame the space. Stone balustrades, paved walkways and a traditional lamppost add depth and perspective, reinforcing the ordered and ceremonial nature of the historic university setting.
Old College is one of the most recognisable academic buildings in Scotland and has been central to the University of Edinburgh's identity since the eighteenth century. The architecture reflects Enlightenment ideals of reason, balance and civic purpose, qualities closely associated with Edinburgh's historical reputation as a centre of learning and intellectual life. The courtyard layout creates a sense of calm and enclosure, separating scholarly activity from the surrounding streets of the Old Town.
The image captures the continuity between past and present within a working university environment. While the buildings are steeped in history, they remain an active part of modern academic life, housing teaching spaces, offices and cultural venues. The absence of crowds allows the architectural form and materials to take visual precedence, emphasising the scale, craftsmanship and permanence of the institution.
This photograph is well suited for editorial use covering higher education, university life, historic architecture, Scottish culture and heritage, as well as commercial applications relating to education marketing, cultural tourism, academic publications and representations of European universities within historic urban settings.

At the International Exhibition held in London in 1862, Messrs. Cyrus Price and Co., first placed their safes in open competition with the world's leading makers, where the excellent qualities of their Holdfast and Fire-resisting safes and patent locks gained the prize medal awarded for new and special improvements. In 1869 this success was repeated at Wolverhampton, and was followed by an award of the only prize medal at Cardiff in 1888, and a gold medal for second order of merit at Melbourne, 1888-89.
Cyrus Price changed hands and names eventually being renamed Guardian Safe & Steel Furniture Company with a factory at Giggety Bridge, Wombourne before becoming Guardian Safes.

It is operated by RoadChef, who has a 25-year lease on the site. The company also uses the site as its head office
Norton Canes services is located on the M6 Toll between junctions T6 and T7, and is positioned so that it can be accessed before reaching the main toll plaza in either direction. It is a single-sided site, unlike a large majority of other service areas which have separate facilities for each direction. For this reason it is possible to do a U-turn at the services
however, it is not possible to avoid the toll in that way.
Unlike most other service areas, where it is illegal for traffic from local roads to use the back entrance to the site, provision has been made at Norton Canes for traffic from the A5 to access the services

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DEJMYX - Barrington Court is a Tudor manor house begun around 1538 and completed in the late 1550s, with a vernacular 17th-century stable court (1675), situated in Barrington, near Ilminster, Somerset, England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF8BK4 - A moody dusk scene within the historic Old College of the University of Edinburgh, showing the neoclassical stone buildings surrounding the central courtyard at South College Street and South Bridge in Edinburgh's Old Town. The imposing architecture, constructed in pale sandstone and crowned by a domed central structure, is set beneath heavy, textured cloud cover that deepens the sense of atmosphere and academic gravitas. The soft, fading light accentuates the worn surfaces, arches and balustrades, revealing centuries of use and civic presence.
In the foreground, a solitary figure stands within the courtyard, adding scale and a quiet human narrative to the monumental surroundings. Ornate iron street lighting and stone steps frame the approach to the buildings, reinforcing the formal layout typical of major eighteenth and nineteenth-century university architecture. The Talbot Rice Gallery, housed within Old College, forms part of this complex, linking contemporary art and culture with one of Scotland's most significant educational institutions.
Old College has long symbolised Edinburgh's role as a centre of learning, philosophy and intellectual life, closely associated with the Scottish Enlightenment and the city's reputation as the Athens of the North. The restrained colour palette, subdued lighting and dramatic sky combine to create an image that feels contemplative and slightly austere, reflecting the seriousness traditionally associated with academia and civic authority.
This image is well suited for editorial use covering higher education, university life, architecture, Scottish history, culture and urban heritage, as well as commercial applications requiring atmospheric imagery of historic institutions, European universities and moody city environments.
