Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EENJP7 - Spring dandelion clock seed head in a garden setting, photographed close up with a soft green background and shallow depth of field. The image shows a mature dandelion, commonly identified as Taraxacum officinale, at the seed-dispersal stage, with some of the delicate white parachute-like pappi still intact and others already blown away. This makes it a strong visual for themes such as spring growth, lawn weeds, garden maintenance, seed dispersal, wild plants and the mixed feelings many gardeners have about dandelions. Although often regarded as a nuisance weed in lawns, borders and vegetable plots because of its deep taproot and its ability to spread freely on the wind, the dandelion is also an important part of the wider garden ecosystem. The Royal Horticultural Society notes that dandelions are now increasingly valued as wildlife plants, while Kew describes the silky pappi that help carry the seeds away from the seed head. This close-up view works well for editorial and commercial uses linked to gardening, horticulture, springtime nature, invasive weeds, lawn care, botany, biodiversity, meadows, wildflowers and seasonal change. The blurred background suggests a park or garden lawn in bright spring daylight, with fresh green growth, soft sunshine and a calm, dry day. The slightly damaged and partly dispersed seed head adds natural realism, suggesting the passing of a light breeze and the rapid spread of common weeds through flowerbeds, borders and grassy spaces. It is a useful image for articles or marketing content about weed control, natural history, seed structure, plant reproduction, troublesome garden plants, pollinator-friendly planting and the visual poetry of familiar wildflowers. The shallow focus and vignette effect help isolate the seed head, giving the photograph a calm, decorative quality as well as practical relevance for garden and nature subjects.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EM2JM8 - Bilingual Revenue sign mounted on a red brick wall at Dublin Castle in Dublin 2, identifying the Irish Tax and Customs administration with English and Irish wording, Revenue , Cáin agus Custaim na hÉireann and Irish Tax and Customs . The photograph shows the official public-facing identity of the Office of the Revenue Commissioners, Ireland's national body for tax, customs and excise administration, using the distinctive black sign, white lettering and line illustration associated with the Revenue brand. The angled view and street-level perspective make the image useful for stories about tax compliance, customs control, public finance, government administration, state offices, Irish public services, business taxation, PAYE, VAT, corporation tax, excise duties, import controls, revenue collection and the relationship between citizens, companies and the State. Dublin Castle is a historic government complex in the heart of the city, associated with centuries of administration and now home to official uses, including functions connected with Revenue. The sign is especially relevant for coverage of Making Tax Digital equivalents, online tax filing, Revenue Online Service, customs after Brexit, EU trade, public-sector modernisation, tax policy, fiscal accountability, enforcement, audits, self-assessment, payroll, landlords, company returns and Irish Government finance. The visible Irish language text adds value for images about bilingual state signage, Irish identity, official communications and public buildings in the Republic of Ireland. Shot in clear daylight, the photograph has a documentary feel, with the sign partly filling the frame and the brick facade providing a strong urban government-office context. It can illustrate general Irish tax and customs themes without showing staff, taxpayers or private data, making it suitable for news, business, finance, legal, public administration, education and editorial publishing

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ENAP3A - Close-up editorial image of an Alcohol Control Area warning sign in Cheshire, England, used to discourage street drinking, reduce alcohol-related anti-social behaviour and support local council or police enforcement in a public space. The sign reads You are now in an alcohol control area and warns that anyone consuming alcohol in the area may be required to cease drinking and surrender any alcohol in their possession. It also states that failure to comply is an arrestable offence and gives a maximum fine of £500. The red prohibition symbol shows bottles crossed through with a green diagonal bar, making the message visually clear for passers-by. A public-realm surveillance camera or CCTV unit is visible on a nearby pole, strengthening the themes of community safety, monitoring, safer streets, disorder prevention and local authority action around public nuisance. The image appears to have been taken beside a road or footpath, with bare trees, low winter light, street furniture and a park or open civic space in the background. It is suitable for illustrating public space protection, local government enforcement, alcohol control zones, designated public place orders, neighbourhood policing, street drinking restrictions, town-centre management, park safety, community protection, alcohol misuse, public order and the wider debate about balancing personal freedom with the protection of residents, visitors and local businesses. In England and Wales, councils and police can use powers such as Public Spaces Protection Orders or earlier alcohol control measures to address behaviours linked to anti-social behaviour. These powers do not necessarily create a blanket national ban on drinking outdoors, but they can allow authorised officers to require someone to stop drinking or surrender alcohol where local restrictions apply. The image is especially useful for editorial stories about anti-social behaviour reduction, public drinking controls, council policy, enforcement signage,

In accordance with the FIC Regulations, the indication of the country of origin or place of provenance of a food shall be mandatory where failure to indicate this might mislead the consumer as to the true country of origin or place of provenance of the food. Consumers might be misled without this information, for example a Melton Mowbray Pork pie which was made in Italy.
Under the FIC Regulations there are specific origin rules which must be adhered to, including the Country of Origin for Primary Ingredients and Country of Origin for Certain Meats.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3K5RD - This canal bridge and waterway photograph was taken on 26 Sep 2022 and shows Weir on the river Wharfe at Tadcaster, Yorkshire, England, UK, LS24 9BL. The thumbnail shows water, ironwork, river or bridge detail, giving the description a strong sense of infrastructure, landscape, flood-prone places, crossings and the meeting of natural and engineered environments. Tadcaster is a long-established Yorkshire brewing town on the River Wharfe, and its streets still carry the visual imprint of beer production, coaching routes, stone buildings, flood risk and local trade. For stock photography use, the value is in the precise subject: Weir on the river Wharfe at Tadcaster, Yorkshire, England, UK, LS24 9BL. It can support articles and publications about industrial waterway, transport infrastructure, swing bridge, canal engineering, dockside heritage, ship canal history, rust texture, urban river scene, northern infrastructure, waterfront regeneration, as well as more specific searches using LS24, Tadcaster, Wharf, Wharfe, summer, river, water, weir, riverbank, bridge, Yorkshire, LS24 9BL, waterway, North Yorkshire, English, riverbanks, Tadcaster weir, flood prevention. The composition also gives space for tighter crops, captions, web thumbnails, report illustrations and social media use, while the Alamy reference 2K3K5RD and the row caption help connect the image to a real place rather than a vague concept. The picture can be used by writers covering heritage, conservation, planning, tourism, retail, transport, public services, nostalgia, local identity, architectural survival, industrial change and the way familiar objects or buildings continue to carry meaning in modern Britain. The mix of water, metal, rivets, rust, traffic routes or canal structures makes the photograph relevant to infrastructure, engineering maintenance, flood risk, transport corridors, waterside redevelop

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3082P - Crossley Brothers was set up in 1867 by brothers Francis (183997) and William J.(18441911). Francis, with help from his uncle, bought the engineering business of John M Dunlop at Great Marlborough Street in Manchester city centre, including manufacturing pumps, presses, and small steam engines.
In 1869 they had the foresight to acquire the UK and world (except German) rights to the patents of Otto and Langden of Cologne for the new gas fueled atmospheric internal combustion engine and in 1876 these rights were extended to the famous Otto four-stroke cycle engine. The changeover to four stroke engines was remarkably rapid with the last atmospheric engines being made in 1877.
The business flourished. In 1881, Crossley Brothers became a private limited company (i.e. Crossley Brothers Ltd.), and then in 1882 it moved to larger premises in Pottery Lane, Openshaw, in eastern Manchester.
Crossley Brothers built diesel engines for stationary, marine and locomotive use. There was a wide range of engines from six to 3200 horsepower (Crossley) and up to 9000 horsepower (Crossley-Pielstick).
Their marine engines had a reputation for durability and reliability.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JWGT63 - Crewe Heritage Centre is a railway museum located in Crewe, England. Managed by the Crewe Heritage Trust, the museum is located between the railway station and the town centre
the site was the location of the 'Old Works' which was demolished in the early 1980s.
History
The centre was established in the old London, Midland and Scottish Railway yard, which was once part of Crewe Works, between the junction to Chester and the West Coast Main Line. It was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, on 24 July 1987. It was renamed in 1992 as Crewe Railway Age by the owning registered charity but, after the management of the centre was taken over by a new group of volunteers, the museum returned to its original name of Crewe Heritage Centre in early 2008.
Exhibits
The centre has a series of exhibits, ranging from the only surviving APT-P train, miniature railways, three open signal boxes (Crewe Station A, Crewe North Junction and Exeter West) and a varied collection of standard gauge steam, diesel and electric locomotives, as well as occasional visiting locomotives. The Main Exhibition Hall features many artefacts and exhibits associated with Crewe, from its locomotive and carriage construction to its famous junction railway station. Brake Van rides are available to the public during special events.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JWGT7C - The Advanced Passenger Train (APT) was a tilting high speed train developed by British Rail during the 1970s and early 1980s, for use on the West Coast Main Line (WCML). The WCML contained many curves, and the APT pioneered the concept of active tilting to address these, a feature that has since been copied on designs around the world. The experimental APT-E achieved a new British railway speed record on 10 August 1975 when it reached 152.3 miles per hour (245.1 km/h), only to be surpassed by the service prototype APT-P at 162.2 miles per hour (261.0 km/h) in December 1979.
Development of the service prototypes dragged on, and by the late 1970s the design had been under construction for a decade and the trains were still not ready for service. The election of Margaret Thatcher brought matters to a head and she alluded to funding cuts for the project. Facing the possibility of cancellation, BR management decided to put the prototypes into service, with the first runs along the London-Glasgow route taking place in December 1981. The result was a media circus when every problem large or small received front-page coverage and the entire project derided as an example of BR's incompetence. The trains were withdrawn from service again by the end of the month, to the great amusement of the press.
The problems were eventually solved and the trains quietly reintroduced in 1984 with much greater success. By this time the competing High Speed Train, powered by a conventional diesel engine and lacking the APT's tilt and performance, had gone through development and testing at a rapid rate and was now forming the backbone of BR's passenger service. All support for the APT project collapsed as anyone in authority distanced themselves from what was being derided as a failure. Plans for a production version, APT-S, were abandoned, and the three APT-Ps ran for just over a year before being withdrawn again over the winter of 1985/6. Two of the three sets were broken up, and parts of

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JWGTC1 - Exeter West Signal Box
Exeter West Signal Box was originally built as a temporary structure by the Great Western Railway in 1913 following the enlargement of Exeter St. David's station It was located to the west of the station, controlling the junction for the London & South Western Railway's line to Waterloo and connections to the goods lines avoiding the station, the engine shed and various yards.
The signal box contained a lever frame of 114 levers, but this was replaced in 1959 by an even larger new frame of 131 levers. The box remained in use until 1985, when colour light signalling controlled electrically from a new signal box at Exeter was brought into use. After closure of Exeter West in 1985, the Exeter West Group moved in and dismantled the signal box, marking each of the hundreds of parts for future reference.
At first, all of the parts were moved to Bristol and a start was made on restoring the box to be a feature at Temple Meads station. However, by summer 1988 it was clear that this project had foundered, but a home was offered at the proposed Swindon Heritage Centre. Everything was moved there, and restoration work continued until 1990. However a seemingly indefinite postponement of the heritage project at Swindon made it necessary to seek another site.
Finally a home was found here at Crewe. Having moved all of the many parts, a start was finally made on the complex task of putting the box back together again in May 1991, the structure was complete and weatherproofed by the end of that year, and the Internal rebuilding continued through 1992. The signal box was formally opened to the public on May Day 1993.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JWRHA5 - Crewe North Junction signal box is signal box with a Westinghouse All Electric Style 'L' lever frame which was commissioned, along with Crewe South Junction signal box (which also had a Westinghouse Style 'L' frame), on 29 March 1940 as part of a resignalling project at Crewe railway station. It saw continued use until 19 July 1985 when it was decommissioned for a redesign of Crewe station and its track layout and signalling.
Location
Crewe North Junction signal box is located on the junction to the North of Crewe railway station between the Chester Lines and the West Coast Main Line. The signal box can also see the lines to and from Manchester and Sandbach and all the platforms on the north side of the station. The signal box, still at its original site, is located in Crewe Heritage Centre where there are now demonstrations and simulations of the signalling in the North Junction box by a team of signallers.
Design
Crewe North Junction signal box contained a lever frame of the Westinghouse Style 'L' design (Westinghouse is now part of Invensys Rail) which was commissioned with Crewe South Junction signal box, which was of the same design. Crewe North Junction signal box was built to a non-standard ARP design, with 15 thick reinforced concrete walls and an 18 thick concrete roof. This was due to it being commissioned in 1940 during World War II so it was built to survive an air raid.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTJ9BW - Bush is a British consumer electronics brand owned by J Sainsbury plc (Sainsbury's), the parent company of the retailer Argos. The former Bush company is one of the most famous manufacturers of early British radios. The company is now defunct, but the Bush brand name survives as a private label brand for budget electronics. Today, all Bush are sold exclusively at Argos and Sainsbury's, with Argos having a wider selection
The Bush DAC90a radio was introduced in 1950. This model superseded the DAC90 and uses smaller valves and a completely redesigned chassis.
The Bush DAC90A is probably the most sought after and collected vintage valve radio of our time. This is because it's easy to use, it's compact, it doesn't need an external aerial, and it looks good and works well. Once restored, these radios are also extremely reliable and can be used every day without problems. It's a four valve plus rectifier superhet with a well laid out chassis housed in a beautiful Bakelite cabinet. Unlike some radios, there's nothing complex about the design. This is a well designed and well built radio, two attributes which result in reliability.
The Bush DAC90A Radio Variants & Versions
There were several versions of the famous Bush DAC90A radio. The radios were basically the same but the dial glasses and knobs differed. The cabinets also varied from ivory to brown or black Bakelite.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K0WRJ1 - Bolton Interchange is a transport interchange combining Bolton railway station and Bolton Bus Station in the town of Bolton in Greater Manchester, England. The station is located on the Manchester to Preston line and the Ribble Valley line, and is managed by Northern Trains. The station is 11+1⁄4 miles (18.1 km) north west of Manchester Piccadilly. Ticket gates have been in operation at the station since 2016.
The railway station was originally named Bolton Trinity Street to differentiate it from nearby Bolton Great Moor Street station which closed in 1954. The station was also known as Bridgeman Street Station and Bradford Square Station.
From the railway station, there are frequent services to Manchester Victoria, Manchester Piccadilly, Clitheroe via Blackburn, Wigan North Western, and Preston. Services operating to Victoria and Piccadilly operate through and terminate at other regional stations, such as Manchester Airport and Stalybridge. There is 1 train per weekday from Southport to Leeds. There is no return service.
The entrance and ticket office are at street level, at which there is a footbridge to the bus station and a taxi rank. A walkway leads to the platforms which are in a cutting. The main island platform has a buffet. The original main station building was demolished in the 1980s, but the Victorian buildings survive on the platforms. The clock tower was dismantled and rebuilt next to the new station.
Several bus companies provide a comprehensive route network of services around Bolton and the surrounding areas, with some subsidised on behalf of Transport for Greater Manchester: Arriva North West, Stagecoach Manchester, Stagecoach Merseyside & South Lancashire, Tyrers, Diamond Bus North West, Blackburn Bus Company, Vision Bus, and Rosso.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTA6N - Dick, Kerr and Company was a locomotive and tramcar manufacturer based in Kilmarnock, Scotland and Preston, England.
W.B. Dick and Company was founded in 1854 in Glasgow by William Bruce Dick. The company were initially oil refiners and manufacturers of paint used for coating the bottom of ships. They had depots and works in Glasgow, Liverpool, Newcastle, Barrow-in-Furness, Cardiff and Hamburg by 1890. From 1883 the company joined with John Kerr and under its new name, expanded into stock-photo/gotonysmith-Tramway.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>tramway equipment and rolling stock and built around fifty locomotives up to 1919.
In 1890 it took limited company status, as railway and tramway appliance makers and as iron and steel founders and electricians. There was a public offer of shares to acquire the engineering and contracting company of the same name - reasons given were the advancing years of the senior partner and the need for investment to expand the works at Kilmarnock including a modern iron and steel foundry.
Until the late 1890s the company had largely produced steam tram engines, but soon afterwards it became one of the largest manufacturers of electric tramway cars.
The company facilities in Preston, Lancashire, were acquired in 1893 along with the railway and tramway plant activities of Hartley, Arnoux and Fanning who had been bought out by Kerr Stuart and Company.
In 1917 they acquired the United Electric Car Company of Preston.

The flight of UAVs may operate with various degrees of autonomy: either under remote control by a human operator, or fully or intermittently autonomously, by onboard computers.
Here, an owner flies a medium sized drone over the river Mersey, close to Runcorn, Widnes, Fiddlers Ferry and the new toll crossing, which is under construction.
Civilian drones now vastly outnumber military drones, with estimates of over a million sold by 2015.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F0G6XG - This documentary stock photograph shows Berlin Green Ampelmann traffic crossing light. The image records the green Ampelmann pedestrian traffic light, making it useful for editorial features on East German design heritage, road crossings, nostalgia, branding and everyday street furniture. Berlin is a city where ordinary street details often carry heavy layers of history, from Prussian and imperial architecture to the Weimar period, Nazi rule, wartime destruction, division, the DDR, reunification, tourism, gentrification and contemporary creative culture. The caption and visible subject detail provide a specific point of entry into that wider story rather than a generic German city view. Buyers could use the photograph for articles about Berlin travel, Cold War memory, street art, museum interpretation, urban nightlife, river sightseeing, architecture, souvenir culture, public transport, pedestrian design or the way history is repackaged in modern tourism. Search-friendly composite terms include Berlin Mitte street art, DDR surveillance display, Berlin Fernsehturm skyline, River Spree pleasure boat, Ampelmann crossing light, Berliner Dom interior, Berlin urban culture and German capital tourism. If the subject is graffiti, it can illustrate the city as a living wall of political humour, youth culture, commercial branding and layered paste-ups. If it is heritage or church architecture, it can support more formal travel, culture, history and education uses. If it is a boat, toy or street sign, it gives editors an accessible human-scale route into a large city story. The documentary style keeps the image credible for web, magazine, guidebook, education, museum, travel, urban policy, politics, design, consumer and social commentary use. Its strength for Alamy search is the mix of precise caption wording and broader Berlin themes, allowing it to be found for both narrow subject searches and wider editorial needs.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4569421476 - 'My first real experience of signal boxes was when my friend from the next year up in school Pete Williams used to blag me into the signalbox at Dinting on the Glossop to Piccadilly Manchester line. It had a chip pan, baby belling and all mod cons. I even remember the incumbent signalman holding a train for ten minutes while we finished our chips!
This is a panoramic shot of the Exeter West signal box, which is now located in original form at Crewe Heritage Centre, formerly the Crewe Railway Age. What's it doing here? you may reasonably ask.
Signalling in the Exeter area was renewed in 1985. this was part of the old GWR area (Great Western Railway or Gods Wonderful Railway as it can occasionally still be referred). It would have been demolished but for a group of enthusiasts who carefully dismantled it so it could be re-erected as a working museum demonstrating how the larger signal boxes of the past were. It indeed works virtually every weekend, trained 'signalmen' are present most weekends to describe and demonstrate signalling days of the past and answer questions from visitors.
Exeter West signalbox was built by the Great Western Railway in 1913. It was located at the west end of St. Davids station, controlling the junction for the London &
South Western Railway's line to Waterloo and connections to the Goods Lines avoiding the station, the engine sheds and various yards. The previous box was not spacious enough to accommodate the greater layout following enlargement of the station. The lengthy new signalbox contained a lever frame of 114 levers, but this was replaced in 1959 by an even larger new frame of 131 levers.
The signal box remained in use until 1985, when colour light signalling controlled electronically from a new box at Exeter was brought into use. After closure of the box, the Exeter West Group moved in and carefully dismantled the signal box, marking each of the hundreds of parts for future reference. The first task was to safely remove all furniture, then dismantle the massive lever frame. all pieces were numbered and after two floundered attempts to site the box in Bristol and Swindon, Crewe found space for it.
The 131-lever frame was rebuilt lever by lever, and the interlocking painstakingly reinstated, and was completed during August 1992. The instrument shelf and the signalling equipment was then added. The box was formally opened to the public on May Day Monday 1993.
With the box once more restored to its proper condition, a start was made on rigging up equipment to simulate activity as it would have been when the box was operational. Most of the levers have been weighted to simulate real operation, although some are actually connected to real signals erected around the site.
An electronic simulator has been provided, and the job working the simulator can be harder than working the box itself, for the operator has to act as signalman at all the adjacent boxes, make telephone calls representing local staff, and work the track circuit lights to emulate the passage of trains.
The box can be worked to the full summer timetable of the 1960's, although generally the box is demonstrated to visitors with a very limited timetable to allow movements and actions to be explained. However once a year, on May Day weekend, members of the Group occasionally simulate a full timetable for a 54-hour continuous period. At its busiest, this requires four staff in the box (just as it used to be) and two further operators controlling the simulator.
If you were wondering, black levers are for points, blue locking points red for signals and black/white for detonators.
Whether you find trains and railways fascinating or not, this is a really interesting place. a bit of a trip back in time at least 25 years to a more manual age. Oh and if you were wondering, they do have a baby Belling, which would be capable of doing chips!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DANJMR - Passenger help point at Slateford ScotRail railway station near Edinburgh, Scotland, photographed beside a white picket fence and leafy platform boundary in bright daylight. The image shows a yellow circular Help Point sign, a red and white assistance symbol, an orange and grey intercom unit, speaker grille and push button, with clear wording telling passengers to press the button and speak clearly for train information or emergency contact. The notice also warns that CCTV control is connected to the system and that misuse may result in prosecution. This is a strong editorial stock image for unstaffed railway stations, passenger safety, rail accessibility, help points, emergency communication, suburban transport, public information systems and the everyday infrastructure behind Scotland's railway network. Slateford is a suburban station in the west of Edinburgh, served by ScotRail trains on routes linking the city with Glasgow, Shotts, Carstairs and other parts of central Scotland. The help point is particularly relevant because smaller stations may not have staffed ticket offices or a visible member of staff on site, so passengers rely on signs, public address systems, CCTV, intercoms, live information displays and mobile travel apps to get assistance. The photograph can illustrate stories about public transport access, passenger confidence, lone travel, station security, disability support, service disruption, railway modernisation, transport funding and the tension between cost-saving staffing models and the need for reassurance at quieter stops. Visible details include the bold yellow sign, warning text, ScotRail reference, tactile height position, metal post, trees, gravel, fencing and clean platform-side setting. The image is useful for railway, safety, infrastructure, accessibility, customer service and Scottish transport themes, especially where a generic visual is needed for station assistance rather than trains themselves.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KEW736 - Ian Kevin Curtis (15 July 1956 18 May 1980) was an English musician. He was the lead singer and lyricist of the post-punk band Joy Division and recorded two albums with the group: Unknown Pleasures (1979) and Closer (1980). Curtis was known for his bass-baritone voice, dance style and songwriting typically filled with imagery of desolation, emptiness, and alienation.
Curtis had epilepsy and depression and died by suicide on the eve of Joy Division's first North American tour and shortly before the release of Closer. Shortly after his death, the three surviving members of the band reconstituted themselves as New Order.
Curtis obtained a job at a record shop in Manchester City Centre, before obtaining more stable employment within the civil service. His employment as a civil servant saw Curtis initially deployed to Cheadle Hulme, where he worked for several months with the Ministry of Defence, before he was offered alternative employment within the Manpower Services Commission in a building at Piccadilly Gardens. He later worked as a civil servant in Woodford, Greater Manchester although, at his request, approximately one year later Curtis was posted to Macclesfield's Employment Exchange, where he worked as an Assistant Disablement Resettlement Officer.
On 23 August 1975, Curtis married Deborah Woodruff, to whom he was introduced by a friend, Tony Nuttall. Ian and Deborah initially became friends and then began dating in December 1972, when both were 16 years old. Their wedding service was conducted at St Thomas' Church in Henbury, Cheshire. Curtis was 19 and Woodruff 18. They had one child, a daughter named Natalie, born on 16 April 1979. Initially, the couple lived with Ian's grandparents, although shortly after their marriage the couple moved to a working-class neighbourhood in Chadderton, where they paid a mortgage while working in jobs neither enjoyed. Before long, the couple became disillusioned with life in Oldham and remortgaged their house

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCK2J - A yellow Bee Network double decker bus travelling through the Deansgate area of Manchester city centre, passing the historic Deansgate Station, formerly associated with Knott Mill, with modern glass towers, cranes and newly built blocks rising behind. The image captures the contrast between old and new Manchester: red brick railway architecture and Victorian transport infrastructure in the foreground, set against the fast changing skyline of high rise residential and commercial development around Deansgate, Castlefield and the wider city centre. The Bee Network is Greater Manchester's joined-up transport system, developed by Transport for Greater Manchester to integrate buses, trams, walking, wheeling and cycling, with buses brought into the network from 2023. TfGM promotes the distinctive yellow branding with the phrase Say yellow to the Bee Network , making the bus immediately recognisable as part of the region's public transport reform. This photograph is useful for editorial coverage of bus franchising, local control of public transport, Greater Manchester devolution, sustainable travel, city transport, urban regeneration, new apartment towers, commuting, active travel, road space and the changing built environment of central Manchester. The visible cyclist, road junction, rail bridge, station building, bus livery and construction skyline give the image strong search value for stories about integrated transport, city centre growth, public infrastructure, housing development, railway heritage and everyday movement through the modern city. The sunny daylight and blue sky provide a clear documentary view, while the mix of historic Deansgate Station and contemporary towers makes the scene especially suitable for articles contrasting Manchester's industrial past with its present phase of dense urban redevelopment.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RPGEK5 - Anthony Howard Wilson (20 February 1950 10 August 2007) was a British record label owner, radio and television presenter, nightclub manager, impresario and journalist for Granada Television and the BBC.
Wilson was the man behind some of Manchester's most successful bands. He was one of the five co-founders of Factory Records and the founder and manager of the Haçienda nightclub. Wilson was known as Mr Manchester, dubbed as such for his work in promoting the culture of Manchester throughout his career.
He was portrayed by Steve Coogan in Michael Winterbottom's 2002 film 24 Hour Party People, and by Craig Parkinson in Anton Corbijn's 2007 film Control.
Depending in what he was working on, he would switch between alternate versions of his name. For example, when he was being a serious formal and respectable persona, such as certain tv presenting appearances, he would use Anthony H Wilson, or for example when reporting for Granada Reports he was referred to as Anthony Wilson, otherwise he would go by Tony Wilson most commonly while on Factory Records business, all alternate versions being legitimate variants of his full name.
In early 2007 emergency surgery was performed to remove one of his kidneys. This forced the postponement of plans to create a Southern Hemisphere version of the In the City festival. Despite the surgery, cancer progressed and a course of chemotherapy was not effective. Wilson died of a heart attack in Manchester's Christie Hospital on 10 August 2007 aged 57. Following the news of his death, the Union Flag on Manchester Town Hall was lowered to half mast as a mark of respect.
The main square of the HOME/First Street development in Manchester, which opened in 2015, is named Tony Wilson Place.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JM9P39 - A slot machine (American English), fruit machine (British English) or poker machine (Australian English and New Zealand English) is a gambling machine that creates a game of chance for its customers. Slot machines are also known pejoratively as one-armed bandits because of the large mechanical levers affixed to the sides of early mechanical machines and the games' ability to empty players' pockets and wallets as thieves would.[1]
A slot machine's standard layout features a screen displaying three or more reels that spin when the game is activated. Some modern slot machines still include a lever as a skeuomorphic design trait to trigger play. However, the mechanics of early machines have been superseded by random number generators, and most are now operated using buttons and touchscreens.
Slot machines include one or more currency detectors that validate the form of payment, whether coin, cash, voucher, or token. The machine pays out according to the pattern of symbols displayed when the reels stop spinning. Slot machines are the most popular gambling method in casinos and constitute about 70% of the average U.S. casino's income.[2]
Digital technology has resulted in variations in the original slot machine concept. As the player is essentially playing a video game, manufacturers can offer more interactive elements, such as advanced bonus rounds and more varied video graphics.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H369J2 - An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone, as an unmanned aircraft system (UAS), or by several other names, is an aircraft without a human pilot aboard.
