Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJYH - A bronze bust of Sir John Barbirolli stands outside the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester city centre, set against the warm red sandstone fa??ade of the city's principal concert hall. The sculpture portrays Barbirolli with a reflective, slightly austere expression, capturing the seriousness and intensity associated with one of Britain's most influential twentieth-century conductors.
Sir John Barbirolli is inseparably linked with Manchester through his long tenure as principal conductor of the Hall?? Orchestra, which he rebuilt after the Second World War and led to international prominence. His contribution to the musical life of the city is widely regarded as foundational to Manchester's reputation as a centre for classical music.
The bust was created by Eduardo Paolozzi, one of Britain's most significant post-war sculptors, known for his public artworks and association with both modernism and pop art. Paolozzi's treatment combines realism with subtle abstraction, lending the memorial both gravitas and contemporary relevance.
The Bridgewater Hall, opened in 1996, occupies a key position within Manchester's cultural quarter and symbolises the city's investment in arts-led regeneration. The juxtaposition of the modern concert hall architecture with a commemorative sculpture rooted in twentieth-century musical heritage reflects Manchester's wider narrative of continuity and reinvention.
Photographed in daylight under calm conditions, the image is well suited for editorial use illustrating British classical music, cultural heritage, public art, Manchester's civic identity, and the role of the arts in urban regeneration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6GX - A vertical street banner displayed on a lamppost in Manchester city centre, promoting Oasis Live '25, a run of major outdoor concerts by the Manchester band Oasis at Heaton Park, Sheepfoot Lane, Manchester M25 2SW, England. The banner features black-and-white portraits of band members Liam Gallagher and Noel Gallagher, alongside the official MCR Live '25 branding used across the city for large-scale summer music events.
The Oasis concerts, scheduled for 11, 12, 16, 19 and 20 July 2025, mark the band's first live performances together in many years and have attracted significant national and international attention. Heaton Park, one of Europe's largest municipal parks, has previously hosted landmark performances by major global artists and is closely associated with Manchester's live-music identity.
The image reflects Manchester's continued promotion of its musical heritage and its role as a major UK destination for live music tourism. Photographed in daylight conditions, the scene shows the banner within the urban streetscape, emphasising the city's cultural branding and anticipation surrounding one of the most high-profile British music reunions of the decade.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T35C20 - The Royal Albert Hall is a concert hall on the northern edge of South Kensington, London, England. It has a seating capacity of 5,272.
Since the hall's opening by Queen Victoria in 1871, the world's leading artists from many performance genres have appeared on its stage. It is the venue for the BBC Proms concerts, which have been held there every summer since 1941. It is host to more than 390 shows in the main auditorium annually, including classical, rock and pop concerts, ballet, opera, film screenings with live orchestral accompaniment, sports, awards ceremonies, school and community events, and charity performances and banquets. A further 400 events are held each year in the non-auditorium spaces. Over its 152 year history the hall has hosted people from various fields, including meetings held by suffragettes, speeches from Winston Churchill and Albert Einstein, fights by Lennox Lewis, exhibition bouts by Muhammad Ali, and concerts from regular performers at the venue such as Eric Clapton and Shirley Bassey.
The hall was originally to have been called the Central Hall of Arts and Sciences, but the name was changed to the Royal Albert Hall of Arts and Sciences by Queen Victoria upon laying the Hall's foundation stone in 1867, in memory of her husband, Prince Albert, who had died six years earlier. It forms the practical part of a memorial to the Prince Consort
the decorative part is the Albert Memorial directly to the north in Kensington Gardens, now separated from the Hall by Kensington Gore.
The Hall was designed by civil engineers Captain Francis Fowke and Major-General Henry Y. D. Scott of the Royal Engineers and built by Lucas Brothers. The designers were heavily influenced by ancient amphitheatres but had also been exposed to the ideas of Gottfried Semper while he was working at the South Kensington Museum

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PG60X6 - Godalming Borough Hall is a municipal building in Bridge Street in Godalming, England. The building is the meeting place of Godalming Town Council.
Following significant population growth, especially after the London and South Western Railway reached the town in 1849, the area became a municipal borough with the Pepper Pot as its town hall in 1875. In May 1907 tenders were invited from contractors to extend the public hall in Bridge Street to the west to create new municipal buildings for the borough. The extension was built in red brick with stone dressings and the work was completed in 1908. The design of the enlarged structure involved an asymmetrical main frontage with ten bays facing onto Bridge Street
the central section of three bays, which slightly projected forward, featured arcading on the ground floor, three sash windows with stone surrounds on the first floor and a pediment above with an oculus in the tympanum. The left hand section featured, in the central bay, a doorway with a canopy on the ground floor and a panel containing the borough coat of arms on the first floor. The right hand section featured, in the end bay which slightly projected forward, a round headed doorway on the ground floor and a tri-part sash window on the first floor with a pediment above.
The building continued to serve as the meeting place of Godalming Borough Council for much of the 20th century, but ceased to be the local seat of government when Waverley Borough Council was formed with its headquarters in Guildford in 1974. Waverley Council moved to new council offices in The Burys just behind the borough hall in 1980. The borough hall subsequently became the meeting place for Godalming Town Council.
Works of art in the borough hall include a portrait by Godfrey Kneller of the locally-born sailor, Admiral Sir John Balchen, who became governor of the Greenwich Naval Hospital in March 1743

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JY55B6 - On 22 May 2017, an Islamist extremist suicide bomber detonated a shrapnel-laden homemade bomb as people were leaving the Manchester Arena following a concert by American pop singer Ariana Grande.
Twenty-three people were killed, including the attacker, and 1,017 were injured, many of them children. Several hundred more suffered psychological trauma. The bomber was Salman Ramadan Abedi, a 22-year-old local man of Libyan ancestry. After initial suspicions of a terrorist network, police later said they believed Abedi had largely acted alone, but that others had been aware of his plans. The Islamic State claimed responsibility shortly after the attack.[3] In March 2020, the bomber's brother, Hashem Abedi, was found guilty of 22 counts of murder and attempting to murder 1,017 others, and was sentenced to life in prison.
The incident was the deadliest terrorist attack and the first suicide bombing in the United Kingdom since the 7 July 2005 London bombings

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M0F6JK - Ziggy Stardust is a fictional character created by English musician David Bowie, and was Bowie's stage persona during 1972 and 1973. The eponymous character of the song Ziggy Stardust and its parent album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972), Ziggy Stardust was retained for Bowie's subsequent concert tour through the United Kingdom, Japan and North America, during which Bowie performed as the character backed by his band The Spiders from Mars. Bowie continued the character in his next album Aladdin Sane (1973), which he described as Ziggy goes to America. Bowie retired the character on 3 July 1973 at a concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in London, which was filmed and released on the documentary Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
As conveyed in the title song and album, Ziggy Stardust is an androgynous, alien rock star who came to Earth before an impending apocalyptic disaster to deliver a message of hope. After accumulating a large following of fans and being worshipped as a messiah, Ziggy eventually dies as a victim of his own fame and excess. The character was meant to symbolise an over-the-top, sexually liberated rock star and serve as a commentary on a society in which celebrities are worshipped. Influences for the character included English singer Vince Taylor, Texan musician the Legendary Stardust Cowboy, and Japanese kabuki theatre.
Ziggy Stardust's exuberant fashion made the character and Bowie himself staples in the glam rock repertoire well into the 1970s, defining what the genre would become. The success of the character and its iconic look flung Bowie into international superstardom. Rolling Stone wrote that Bowie's Ziggy Stardust was the alter ego that changed music forever and sent his career into orbit.
Ziggy Stardust's look and message of youth liberation are now representative of one of Bowie's most memorable eras.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JA1Y2G - Gary Anthony James Webb (born 8 March 1958), known professionally as Gary Numan, is an English musician. He entered the music industry as frontman of the new wave band Tubeway Army. After releasing two albums with the band, he released his debut solo album The Pleasure Principle in 1979, topping the UK Albums Chart. While his commercial popularity peaked in the late 1970s and early 1980s with hits including Are 'Friends' Electric? and Cars (both of which reached number one on the UK Singles Chart), Numan maintains a cult following. He has sold over 10 million records.
Numan faced intense hostility from critics and fellow musicians in his early career, but has since come to be regarded as a pioneer of electronic music. He developed a signature sound consisting of heavy synthesiser hooks fed through guitar effects pedals, and is also known for his distinctive voice and androgynous android persona. In 2017, he received an Ivor Novello Award, the Inspiration Award, from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors.
Numan came to prominence in the 1970s as lead singer, songwriter, and record producer for Tubeway Army. After recording an album's worth of punk-influenced demo tapes (released in 1984 as The Plan), they were signed by Beggars Banquet Records in 1978[20] and quickly released two singles, That's Too Bad and Bombers, both of which did not chart. That's Too Bad was released again in 1983 and reached No. 97 on the UK Singles Chart.
Tubeway Army's self-titled, new wave-oriented debut album, released in 1978, sold out its limited run and introduced Numan's fascination with dystopian science fiction and synthesisers.
Intruder was released on 21 May 2021. The title track was released earlier, on 11 January 2021. Numan discussed its genesis with author Guy Mankowski, who has a chapter on Numan's legacy in his book Albion's Secret History: Snapshots of England's Pop Rebels and Outsiders

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JA1Y2H - Gary Anthony James Webb (born 8 March 1958), known professionally as Gary Numan, is an English musician.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAEHWE - Glasgow Barrowland Ballroom (also known as Barrowlands) is a dance hall and music venue located in Glasgow, Scotland.
The original building opened in 1934 in a mercantile area east of Glasgow's city centre, built by Margaret Maggie McIver (n??e Russell) (1879?1958), The Barras Queen. The Barras street market (more properly Glasgow Barrowland market), after which the area and the ballroom are named, continues until the present day. The building was largely destroyed by fire in 1958, leading to a complete rebuild. The rebuilt ballroom opened on Christmas Eve 1960. The Barrowland building includes large street-level halls used for the weekend markets, with a sizeable weatherproof hall above. The front of the building is decorated with an animated neon sign. The sign is believed to be the biggest of its kind in the UK, although this cannot be confirmed as the original order documents detailing the specifications of the sign have been lost.
In more recent years the ballroom has become a major concert venue with a capacity of around 2,100 people, known for its acoustics and its sprung dance floor. Simple Minds filmed the video for their 1983 hit single, Waterfront, at Barrowlands. Oasis, U2, The Stranglers, The Clash, The Smiths, Big Country, Muse, Foo Fighters, The Vatersay Boys, Skipinnish and Marillion have all played at the hall. Adjacent to the ballroom itself is the Barrowland Park, where there is a pathway which features the names of many artists who have played at the venue over the decades. Northern Ireland punk band Stiff Little Fingers have played to a sold-out crowd every St Patrick's day since 1992, and recorded their Best served Loud album there in 2016 to celebrate 25 years at Barrowland.
Between 1968 and 1969, three young women (Patricia Docker, Jemima McDonald and Helen Puttock) were found brutally murdered after nights out at the Barrowland. All three murders were attributed to a man dubbed Bible John by police.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RG9926 - In 1989 Warrington borough council also saw a need for a better arts and theatre complex so re-developed the old courthouse and Centre Sport, sports hall next door into The Pyramid Arts Centre. The Pyramid, opened in 2002, hosts various classes throughout the year for people interested in discovering the arts. Pyramid also hosts a monthly Comedy Store Event, local band nights as well as having a varied programme of weekly classes. One of its studios was named in 2011 after the late Pete Postlethwaite.
The Parr Hall and Pyramid Arts Centre are located in the Cultural quarter of Warrington town centre, in Palmyra Square.
The Parr Hall is the only surviving professional concert hall venue in Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.
Parr Hall was designed by the local architect William Owen in 1895.
Originally it was built for the people of Warrington by Joseph Parr. Warrington Musical Society gave the first concert.
The hall has hosted concerts and organ recitals from leading orchestras and cathedral organists over the years.
The Rolling Stones performed at the venue on 25 November 1963, The Moody Blues on 1 March 1965 and The Who on 22 March and 11 October 1965. The band James - having sold out concerts at much larger venues - played the Parr Hall on 20 December 1991 to record a promotional video. Other notable artist such as Feeder, The Courteeners, Beady Eye, Arctic Monkeys, and Shane Filan of Westlife have played at the venue, and Jools Holland is a regular performer.
The Parr Hall has also hosted many famous comedians including Andy Parsons, Jimmy Carr and Andi Osho.
It has also been home since 1992 to the Warrington Scouts Gang Show.
The Warrington Male Voice Choir have been regular performers at the Hall for the past 100 years.
The Parr Hall was the chosen venue for the first Stone Roses concert since 1996 when the band announced a last-minute show on 23 May 2012

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F89PKG - The Usher Hall is a 5 star concert hall, situated on Lothian Road, in the west end of Edinburgh, Scotland. It has hosted concerts and events since its construction in 1914 and can hold approximately 2,200 people in its recently restored auditorium, which is well loved by performers due to its acoustics. The Hall is flanked by The Royal Lyceum Theatre on the right and The Traverse Theatre on the left. Historic Scotland has registered the Hall with Category A listed building status.
The construction of the hall was funded by Andrew Usher, a whisky distiller and blender, who donated ?100,000 to the city specifically to fund a new concert hall. The choice of site caused early delays but in 1910 an architectural competition was announced with the requirement that the hall be simple but dignified. The winning bid (one of 130 entries) came from Stockdale Harrison & Howard H Thomson of Leicester. The design was partly a backlash against Victorian Gothic, with a return to classical features owing much to the Beaux-Arts style. On 19 July 1911, George V and Queen Mary laid two memorial stones, an event attended by over a thousand people.
Still owned and managed by the City of Edinburgh Council,

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K5J0D0 - Symphony Hall is a 2,262 seat concert venue in Birmingham, England. It was officially opened by the Queen on 12 June 1991, although it had been in use since 15 April 1991. It is home to the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and hosts around 270 events a year. It was completed at a cost of ?30 million. The hall's interior is modelled on the Musikverein in Vienna and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The venue, managed alongside Town Hall, presents a programme of jazz, world, folk, rock, pop and classical concerts, organ recitals, spoken word, dance, comedy, educational and community performances, and is also used for conferences and business events as part of the International Convention Centre.
In 2016 the Concert Hall Acoustics expert Leo Beranek ranked Symphony Hall as having the finest acoustics in the United Kingdom, and the seventh best in the world. Proof of these fine acoustics is that a pre-opening acoustic test demonstrated that if a pin was dropped on stage, the sound could be heard from anywhere in the hall
Symphony Hall was designed by Percy Thomas Partnership and Renton Howard Wood Levin, (who together formed the Convention Centre Partnership for the ICC) with specialist help from Russell Johnson, founder of acoustic consultants Artec. A particularly innovative feature is the hall's acoustic flexibility. It has a reverberation chamber behind the stage and extending high along the sides, adding 50% to the hall's volume, the doors to which can be remotely opened or closed. The U-shaped reverberation chamber area has a volume of 12,700 cubic metres (450,000 cu ft). There is an acoustic canopy which can be raised or lowered above the stage. Dampening panels can be extended or retracted to ensure that the sound of the space is perfectly matched to the scale and style of the music to be performed. There are also reverse fan walls at the rear of the hall which provide further reflections of sound

Manchester evg News Review - https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/whats-on/music-nightlife-news/gig-review-fall--manchester-7129956
I've seen Mark E Smith at a range of venues, from sweaty club gigs to confusing 100,000 Gorillaz fans at Glastonbury's main stage, but to see Manchester's most dissident music icon at the city's cathedral felt like it would be a surreal experience.
When the man himself strode past paying customers into the main nave of the grand old building, with the assurance of a man who very much owned the place, it was a double-take moment which seemed fitting of the whole event.
The Fall have been an unusually settled outfit in recent years, now on their fourth consecutive studio album with the same line-up.
For a band which has clocked up almost 70 members ? one of whom was reportedly fired by its iconic frontman and dictator-in-chief for ordering a salad ? it's been a period of relative calm which could have brought accusations of sterility.
The rousing opener ?Your Future, Our Clutter' quickly dispels any fears of the serene venue taking away any of The Fall's traditional sting, if anything the acoustics of the cathedral add another layer to Smith's barking, hectoring vocals.
The follow-up number ?I'm not from Bury' seems appropriate as the Prestwich rock deity holds his hometown crowd in the palm of his hand, especially the ones craning their necks around the cathedral's dramatic pillars as he prowls around the stage like an overlord searching for something that needs correcting.
In nearing 40 years as The Fall's supreme leader Smith has exhibited a fondness for ?live-mixing' during sets ? a tweak of an amp here etc

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DJ7N5K - Television is an American rock band, formed in New York City in 1973 and credited as highly influential and seminal.
Television was part of the 1970s New York rock scene, along with musical acts like the Patti Smith Group, The Ramones, Blondie, Richard Hell, and Talking Heads. Although they recorded in a raw manner similar to their contemporaries, minimalizing the use of studio techniques, sound effects and atypical instruments, Television's music was unique and technically proficient, defined by guitarists Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd. The group's debut album, Marquee Moon, is often considered one of the defining releases of the punk era.
Lester Bangs heard in Television's music the influence of Quicksilver Messenger Service, noting a similarity between Verlaine's guitar playing and that of John Cipollina.[3] Tom Verlaine has downplayed the comparison, citing the Ventures as a more apt reference point. In 2004, Robert Christgau pointed to the debt that Television owed to the San Francisco scene of the late 1960s, directly comparing Verlaine's guitar playing to that of Jerry Garcia

A cracking track from 'The Thief and the Heartbreaker' album.
Alberta Cross is a New York-based band, formed by Petter Ericson Stakee (vocals, guitar) &
Terry Wolfers (bass). Despite their different upbringings - Stakee travelled from an early age between Sweden and England with his singer-songwriter father, whilst Wolfers was brought up in London's East End - they formed what would later become Alberta Cross. After relocating to Brooklyn, New York, Stakee and Wolfers solidified the line-up with the addition of Austin Beede, Alec Higgins and Sam Kearney.
The band's sound has been compared to The Band, Neil Young, The Raconteurs and other blues-influenced rock bands.
'Lucy Rider' is heard in the series premiere of the BBC One series Survivors, as well as episode 3 of Season 1 of Dirty Sexy Money. The album is well worth checking out.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 6314390329 - 'Its been a while Howard...
I last saw Magazine at the Manchester Academy 1 on valentines day 2009, much to the consternation of 'er indoors. Since then they have recorded a new album on record label Wire Sound. 'No Thyself' is the first for three decades. Legendary bass player Barry Adamson left to concentrate on his film work and solo recordings. Jon 'Stan' White has taken over his bass.
The procedings started with some placards from Howard 'You Do The Meaning' (which is a track from the new album) and 'Fly Away To The World' after a Japanese kabuki intro. The old favourite 'Definitive Gaze' is first up. The sound mix seemed shaky at first, poor sound is said to have dogged a few opening gigs. Howards vocals seemed by the middle of definitive gaze.
Once introduced as Magazine version 6.0 service pack 1, they ploughed into 'Give Me Everything'. The excitement and the pogo-ing (yes, old men too..) started.
The full set list was:

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J7J - This image shows a well-worn blue flight case stencilled with the words Lynott Thin Lizzy ? Fragile, referencing the touring equipment used by Thin Lizzy and frontman Phil Lynott. Such cases were essential for transporting guitars, amplifiers, and other delicate instruments between venues during extensive national and international tours.
The scuffed surface, chipped paint, and taped label remnants speak to years of use on the road, offering a tangible glimpse into the physical reality of touring life for rock bands during the 1970s and 1980s. Flight cases like this were handled by road crew members responsible for safely moving valuable equipment between trucks, stages, and backstage areas.
Thin Lizzy were one of Ireland's most influential rock bands, known for blending hard rock with folk influences and for iconic tracks such as The Boys Are Back in Town and Jailbreak. Objects associated with their touring years now carry strong cultural and historical significance, bridging the gap between music performance and the unseen labour behind live shows.
Photographed under low light, the image emphasises texture, wear, and typography, making it well suited to editorial use covering music history, classic rock heritage, touring culture, backstage life, and archival memorabilia connected to influential bands and musicians.

'A Question Of Etiquette are a five piece Death Metal band from Northwich who formed in 2009.With there energetic riffs, brutal breakdowns and lively stage presence promises to keep the pits moving and cause as much destruction as possible. With there demo e.p now released summer 2010
A Question Of Etiquette hope to keep raising the bar and destroy the UK... Their lyrical concept is born through the hatred that many of us have grown up with through our lives, the people we know, hate and love and the pure passion that drives us to aim as far we can... The band aim for a fresh melodic sound, yet maintaining an extreme yet old school feel to the music, forever hoping to progress through time, and with the dedication and drive we all have we believe this is possible'
This Winnington Rec' Banned! gig was opened by Spires, Kensington Arms from Holland and topped off by AQOE (A Question Of Etiquette).
The AQOE set included 'Hold Tight', Divided, AQOE, Innovations, 'Visions of a sleeping god'and Brainless.

These metal lads from Manchester fuse the technical parts of various metal styles be it black, death or even prog together into an excellent blend that is both intelligent as well as lethally heavy. Centred around the brainchild of vocalist, guitarist and producer Paul Sadler who's now assembled a band of equally talented musicians, Spires awe by their ability to roll from acoustics to power riffing to techno death (or even all three) on songs like 'The Infinite Descent', 'Spiral of Ascension' and 'Martyr'.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5151969435 - 'Solitary are a Lancashire based rock/metal band. They are Richard Sherrington (original member) on vox &
guitars, Roy Miller on drums, Andy Mellor on lead guitar and Mike Park on Bass. They are caught here at the Winnington Halloween gig in some more than usual fancy dress.
Solitary formed in Preston 1994 and signed to UK label Holier Than Thou Records in 1997, they made their first appearance on the HTT compilation “Genetically Fresh” which attracted interest from the JMG Agency who lined up support slots with Kill 2 This, Reign and Deranged from Sweden. May the following year Solitary record “Nothing Changes” Solitary then embarked on two UK tours to promote the album, which was released in November 1998.
In 2008 a new album “Requiem”, over a four-year period fraught with personal highs and lows the band created a 'Thrash Metal Monster', which was hailed as a must for the fans of Testament, God Forbid, Slayer or The Haunted. Influenced by the aforementioned bands and the 80’s Bay Area bands.
“Requiem” contains a guest vocal appearance from Chris Astley of 80’s Thrashers Xentrix on the track “Hatred” the CD also has cover of Testament’s “Into the Pit”. When writing the album Solitary used inspirational albums such as “Slaughter of the Soul”, “ The Gathering”, “ A New Darkness Upon Us” and “Gone Forever” as reference points to help them create the same feeling as those albums generated when they first heard them whether or not they’ve done that remains to be seen.
The artwork created by bassist Michael Park uses the original cover of a book published in 1736. The band are also shooting a video for “Keep Your Enemies Closer” in early September as well as having tracks on the CD cover mounts on Metal Hammer and Terrorizer in the UK.
If you have chance, catch a gig. See whats coming up at www.solitary.org.uk

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4734798535 - ''This Is Turin' has been described as a 'UK extreme metal band' from Cheshire. They announced they were signing to Rising Records late last year with an album in the pipeline.
Stalwarts may remember Daz from his early seminal hard/grind-core band Fall-out. Daz and the new line up have gone from strength to strength and while his hair has become less, the quality material (and the tat2's) have become more.
The band were on top form tonight. The set included 23:1, (the) Nameless, Carpe Diem, The Flood, Mothers Milk (a love song? LOL?), To Your Knees, Lilly and Eradicated. Castro finished off the set and it was good to see that the 'Winnington wall of death' is not dead.
The line up was Daz on Vox, Hayden &
Davey on Guitars, Danni on Bass and Ed on percussion.
Keep it up Daz, Cheshire music needs you lads :-)
There are song samples and all kinds on their MySpace page at www.myspace.com/thisisturinuk including some demo trax to check out. Upcoming gigs take them to Birmingham, Colwyn Bay, wakefield, Manchester and Bridgend. So no excuse not to catch them if death metal (with 'with 50% added extra Tech with libberal smatterings of ambient and a sprinkling of pure unconcentrated blackened epic death... Hmm, there might be some grind and classical in there!'

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4550103659 - 'Outwardly Kalahan look like two blokes with a synth, laptop PC and a spare guitar around the back if they might need it. Once they kick off however, the B-Movie voiceover clips and canned processed beats start and you realise 20 seconds in that you are in for a rare treat. Looking unassuming they lull you into a false sense of security as they echo Pendulum, The Quemist and others in a roller coaster of music. They have been at this since 2007 and obviously learned a lot.
Some of the tracks from the setlist at Winnington at the Banned! Network gig was:
Heavens Gate
Rize Of Flyz
Jump
Beyatch
Glxy
Bass Invaders
Re-Chem
Monochrome
Anthem
(with) Aaarrggh (as encore)
They are Clide Yohanas Ventura on Vox and guitar and Bubba O Montoya Vox and keyboards. With names like that maybe they dont actually live in Crewe :-) . The again we might know Clide as Lea Ward back in the real world.
They describe themselves as “Massive Attack meets Ed Wood” and 'what the Beatles would sound like if they lived in Manchester had keyboards and new (sic) the Mighty Boosh'
Word is slowly getting out about this pair, the Crewe Chronicle did a piece on them in march 2010. In it they mention they are front runners to support to the world’s first live dubstep band Jazzsteppa on tour later this year. ( www.chesterchronicle.co.uk/entertainment-chester/news-rev... ).
Anyway, keep an eye out for these lads, they blew me away and I am very difficult to please. The more you see the less surprises me, but Kalahan really did. If you see them coming to your neck of the woods, go and see what the fuss is all about.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4566257143 - 'Impaled Existence is a 5-piece progressive, melodic death metal band from North Wales, UK. Forming in 2004, the band has grown and matured into a finely tuned combination of brutality and melody. With songs 'Betraying The Human Condition' and 'A Thousand Armies Strong' the band shows off it's more aggressive and progressive side with devastating riffs, finger-licking bass, pounding double-bass footwork and ear-shattering vocals. Showing their diversity, songs 'The Last Tempest' and 'In Reveries' demonstrate the band's more melodic side.
Influences Range from various metal bands, brutal and melodic, such as: Whitechapel, In Flames, Scar Symmetry, Origin, Textures, Fear Factory and Dream Theatre, just to name a few.
Impaled Existence have played with: Swallow The Sun, Suicide Silence, Annotations of an Autopsy, As Blood Runs Black, Born of Osiris, Abilgail Williams and many more. The band add Decapitated, Kataklysm &
Man Must Die to this list in 2010 with many more exciting prospects.

Here on a bill with Crewes AQUO and Blue Gillespie (of south Wales). A lot of the new stuff was played and it will be a long five weeks until the release of 'Dreams Of Death &
The Death Of Dreams' which must be well worth getting hold of. You used to be able to buy their first EP, 'A Demon For Every Occasion' at gigs, I remember scrounging a copy several years back. The new album was cut in 2009 at Parlour Studios Northampton with acclaimed metal producer Russ Russell (Napalm Death/Evile blah da blah...) at the mixing desk.
In describing the cut they namecheck Hole, Atari Teenage Riotand my old punk faves Killing Joke. These are cute cookies. Follow this link and maybe buy a tee or some other cool merch www.obsessivecompulsiveband.com/shop/
The band are currently on tour taking in Bristol, Newport, Manchester, Bradford, Worcester and Birmingham. Go out of your way to see them, you wont be dissapointed!
There was a crowd of about 130 there and it was a cracking night.
A full list of nights where I covered the gigs can be found at www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3711866695/

So often drummers are not given the recognition they deserve. Tucked away at the back of the stage. I try to take at least a few shots of drummers in each band I take, not always possible with good results!
Still where would we be without John Densmore of the Doors, the mighty Bonzo John Bonham of Led Zeppilin, Topper Headon of the Clash, Stephen Morris of Joy Division (once told to totaly dismantel his kit by a drug crazed Martin Hannett whil erecording Unknown Pleasures), The Stones Charlie Watts, Roger Taylor of Queen, Keith Moon and Neil Peart of Rush (not often you will catch me heaping praise on Rush, but where its due....). I will now dig out Cornershops excellent CD to play 'slip the drummer one'...

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4468213250 - 'Rehearsal with conductor Jeremy Jackman prior to the candlelight concert by the English Baroque Choir. St Martins is in the north east corner of Trafalgar Square, central London. The patron saint is Martin of Tours.
It is a classic church, a bit of peace from the noise and traffic of Westminster. Its pretty much rectangular with Corinthian style columns. As can be seen here, the ceiling is lovely and provides a warm glow inside. The large window at the altar has an interesting distortion.
There was a lot of work done between 2006-2008 to renovate different parts of the structure. The new East Window installed above the altar at St Martin in the Fields was one element. Designed by Shirazeh Houshiary, in collaboration with architect Pip Horne. This window replacing the old window (following World War II bomb damage) marked the final stage of the church's Renewal Project on 28 April 2008.
Donations are always welcome however and I noticed it is still possible to sponsor a pane of glass and 'Give light to St Martin's'. It offers social care services to London's Chinese community and homeless people.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5164712933 - 'The Rocker - 'Thin Lizzy' - Play this track here.
¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
A track from the late great Phil Lynott. I heard this live finishing up a set at the Manchester Apollo in 1979 I think, December time.
The band often used to finish up with this track in celebration of a guy called Ted Carroll. He had brought the band to London from Dublin in the early 70's and he ran a Saturday record stall called 'Rock On' on Golborne Road, Off Ladbroke Grove market.
Carroll was involved with early Chiswick label artists and the founders of Stiff records (motto 'If it aint Stiff, it aint worth a f**k). Thus was instrumental in producing and pressing a great many of the 70's vinyls in my loft. He never was involved in a Thin Lizzy release however, Decca and Phongram were the bands labels, with the former involved with the band releasing an album of Deep Purple covers.
Thin Lizzy's leader, Lynott was composer or co-composer of almost all their songs. He was one of the few black men to achieve commercial success in hard rock, and was certainly the first black Irishman to do so. As well as being multiracial, the band drew their members not only from both sides of the Irish border but also from both the Catholic and Protestant communities.
For a great introduction to Thin Lizzy, the live album 'Live and Dangerous' is your only option. There is some disagreement over just how much of the album is actually recorded live. Producer Tony Visconti claimed that the only parts that weren't overdubbed were the drums and the audience. However Brian Robertson has refuted this, saying that he had refused Lynott's request to re-record a guitar solo, and that the only overdubs were backing vocals and some guitar parts by Gorham. He added, 'It's just not true. The only reason we said that it was recorded all over was obviously for tax reasons... so everything that Visconti claims is boll**ks.
Listen for yourself and make your own mind up :-)

The Fender Cyclone was a series of electric guitars made by Fender. Introduced in late 1997, the Cyclone body is similarly styled to the Mustang but with a significantly different specification. The body of the Cyclone is a quarter of an inch thicker than the body of a Mustang and is made of poplar, whereas contemporary Mustang reissues were made of basswood.
The Fender Cyclone was discontinued in 2007.

My first knowledge of the Williams brothers was their involvement in Sub Sub (and the excellent top 10 UK single Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use) from around 1993). A freak fire in Ancoats (now home to lots of yuppie flats) in Feb 1996 destroyed the lads studio. When they got back together in 1998 their style had changed to be more alternative rock and the Doves were born.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3356735418 - 'Manchester musician Howard Devoto, ex Buzzcocks, ex Magazine and ex Luxuria (et Noko ). Here shown at the UK reunion tour 2009.
Howard Devoto was born Howard Trafford 15/03/1952 in Scunthorpe. He began his career as the front man for the Manchester punk band Buzzcocks. He left early on to form Magazine, one of the first post-punk bands and who influenced the whole post 1977 scene. After Magazine, he went solo. After Magazine split in 1981 Devoto spent two years putting together a solo album with former Magazine keyboard player Dave Formula (the guy who precipitated the 2009 reunion). Though reception of Jerky Versions of the Dream was mixed, the single 'Rainy Season' was consistently picked as a stand-out track. Later, formed indie band Luxuria with Noko.
For most of the 1990s, Devoto was little involved in music, earning his living by working for a photo agency.
In 2001, Devoto teamed up for the first time in twenty-five years with Buzzcocks Pete Shelley and released the much-anticipated Buzzkunst under the name ShelleyDevoto.
In 2002, Devoto had a small part in the movie 24 Hour Party People, a film about Manchester's Factory Records. In his brief cameo appearance, Devoto appears as a janitor cleaning a men's toilet while actor Martin Hancock (who bears no major resemblance to Devoto) portrays Devoto having a tryst with the wife of promoter/journalist Tony Wilson. The real-life Devoto breaks the fourth wall by addressing the camera and stating in dead pan, 'I definitely don't remember this happening'.
In February 2009 Magazine reformed as shown, with former Luxuria guitarist Noko replacing the deceased John McGeoch on guitar.
On July 9, 2009, Devoto was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Bolton for his contribution to music.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MKF77W - The Verve was an English rock band formed in Wigan, Greater Manchester in August 1990 by lead vocalist Richard Ashcroft, guitarist Nick McCabe, bass guitarist Simon Jones and drummer Peter Salisbury. Guitarist and keyboard player Simon Tong later became a member in their first reunion only.
Beginning with a psychedelic sound with their debut LP A Storm in Heaven, by the mid-1990s the band had released several EPs and four albums. They also endured name and line-up changes, break-ups, health problems, drug abuse and various lawsuits. The band's commercial breakthrough was the 1997 album Urban Hymns, one of the best-selling albums in UK history. It features the hit singles Bitter Sweet Symphony, The Drugs Don't Work, Sonnet and Lucky Man. In 1998, the band won two Brit Awards, winning Best British Group, appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone in March, and in February 1999, Bitter Sweet Symphony was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song.
Soon after their commercial peak, The Verve disbanded in April 1999, citing internal conflicts. According to Billboard magazine.
On 24 May 1998, The Verve played a homecoming concert in front of 33,000 fans in the grounds of Haigh Hall & Country Park, Aspull, supported by Beck and John Martyn. The band then played gigs in mainland Europe, but, on 7 June, a post-show fight at D?sseldorf-Philipshalle left McCabe with a broken hand and Ashcroft with a sore jaw. After this, McCabe decided he could not tolerate the pressures of life on the road any longer and pulled out of the tour, leaving the band's future in jeopardy, with rumours of a split circulating in the press. The band continued with session musician B. J. Cole replacing McCabe, whose guitar work was also sampled and triggered on stage.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F89PKA - The Usher Hall is a 5 star concert hall, situated on Lothian Road, in the west end of Edinburgh, Scotland.
