Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM983G - A documentary close-up of the entrance signage for Tiamos Continental Caf?? Bar on Great Underbank in Stockport, focusing on a large blue sign with gold lettering reading CONTINENTAL CAF?? ENTRANCE. The sign projects above a recessed stairwell entrance, hinting at a basement or lower-ground venue typical of older town-centre buildings. To the right, a second board advertises the offer in classic caf??-bar language, including WINES & BEERS, SPECIALITY TEAS & COFFEES and PATISSERIE, reinforcing the continental-style positioning and the hospitality function of the premises.
The image leans into texture and age: weathered paint, worn edges, and a slightly peeling fa??ade above the sign suggest a long-used building and the layered character of Stockport's Underbank streets. The angle is slightly upward, catching upper windows and masonry, which helps place the sign within its architectural context rather than isolating it as a graphic. Light is cool and even, consistent with cold-season daylight, helping the lettering remain readable without glare while emphasising the patina of the materials.
Editorially, this photograph is useful for themes around independent caf??s and bars, local hospitality, and the way older high-street signage contributes to place identity. It also supports wider narratives about Stockport's Underbanks as a heritage area experiencing regeneration and a revival of food-and-drink venues. The clear text makes it highly searchable and suitable as a location identifier, while the worn, authentic look provides a strong documentary feel for stories about traditional streets, town-centre change, and the everyday texture of Northern England urban life.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG8YA4 - A rather artificial attempt at the recreation of a lively coffee house scene was made by the temperance movement in the 1880's. Modelled after the spacious, light, mahogany-trimmed taverns being promoted by the beer industry, the late Victorian coffee house was a conscious attempt by naive social workers to lure the working men from their pubs and the perils of demon drink. Coffee taverns, one pamphlet stated, must show there are beverages as comforting as beer, that there are beverages to be bought as cheap as beer. And they must provide advantages not provided by such a formidable enemy and by this manoeuvre make victory certain. Accordingly, working-men were encouraged to bring their own food to be cooked free of charge in the tavern's kitchen. Newspapers and games were laid out - also gratis - and customers were encouraged to remain as long as they wanted. Needless to say, none of these coffee taverns survived long on their own.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMTW - This image shows the illuminated neon sign for The Rolling Scones Cafe, located within God's Own Junkyard on the Ravenswood Industrial Estate in Walthamstow, East London. The caf?? forms an integral part of the visitor experience at the venue, providing food and drink amid one of London's most distinctive collections of neon signage.
God's Own Junkyard is internationally recognised for its dense, immersive displays of vintage and custom-made neon signs, many of which have appeared in films, television, and music videos. The Rolling Scones Caf?? sits among this visual overload, serving visitors, photographers, and tourists who come to experience the space as both an art installation and a cultural attraction.
The sign itself uses flowing red neon script spelling The Rolling Scones, with a smaller illuminated Cafe panel beneath, mounted against industrial brickwork typical of former light-industrial buildings in the area. The contrast between utilitarian architecture and expressive neon typography reflects the wider character of the Junkyard, where commercial signage is recontextualised as art.
Photographed in daylight, the image highlights the continued relevance of neon signage in contemporary creative spaces. It is well suited to editorial use covering London cafes, independent hospitality, creative venues, neon art, cultural tourism, and the adaptive reuse of industrial estates in East London.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PY19DE - Jet2 plc (formerly Dart Group plc) is a British multinational airline company based in Leeds, England.
Its head office is located in the Low Fare Finder House on the grounds of Leeds Bradford Airport, England. Subsidiary Jet2.com has its head office in the same building.
The company's name for most of its existence was derived from the type of aircraft that it first flew, the Handley Page Dart Herald. After selling off other units, the company rebranded as Jet2 in 2020. The stock ticker symbol also changed to Jet2 to reflect the name change
In 2002, four Boeing 737 aircraft were purchased with two becoming 737 QC (Quick change) aircraft and two as passenger aircraft. From February 2003, the Jet2 low-cost airline began flying from Leeds Bradford Airport to mainland Europe destinations. Fowler-Welch and Coolchain merged to become Fowler-Welch Coolchain Ltd in 2003. Eight Boeing 737-300 aircraft (of which five were passenger aircraft) were purchased in 2003 to bring the total to 12. In 2004, six more Boeing 737-300 passenger aircraft were purchased, and routes from Belfast International Airport started in April and from Manchester Airport in December. In 2005, routes began from Newcastle Airport in October and two Boeing 757-200 aircraft were purchased. In 2006, six more Boeing 757-200 passenger aircraft were bought and the Channel Express Portsmouth distribution base was sold to Ferryspeed C.I. Ltd in June. A package holiday company, Jet2holidays, was formed in January 2007.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NAWGJT - The Black Country is a loosely defined area of southern Staffordshire and northern Worcestershire which lies to the north and west of Birmingham, and to the south and east of Wolverhampton. The town of Dudley (Worcestershire) is sometimes referred to as being the Black Country's unofficial capital.
The Black Country is divided between the counties of Stafford and Worcester, the greater part belonging to Staffordshire. Dudley is a detached part of Worcestershire surrounded by Staffordshire, separated from the main body of its own shire by a narrow strip.
By the late 19th century, the Black Country had become one of the most intensely industrialised in the nation. The South Staffordshire coal mines, the coal coking operations, and the iron foundries and steel mills that used the local coal to fire their furnaces, produced a level of air pollution that had few equals anywhere in the world at the time.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59WXF - This image shows the interior of a caf?? in York featuring individual work pods, designed to provide quiet, semi-private spaces for customers working remotely or studying. The pods are constructed with simple, modern materials including plywood panels and muted painted surfaces, reflecting contemporary caf?? and coworking design trends.
Visible signage lists a range of teas and drinks, reinforcing the dual purpose of the space as both a traditional coffee shop and a functional workspace. The numbered pods indicate structured seating, allowing customers to work individually while remaining within a social caf?? environment.
Caf?? work pods have become increasingly common in UK cities, particularly following shifts toward remote and hybrid working. They cater to freelancers, students, digital nomads, and professionals seeking an alternative to home working or formal offices.
Photographed to show layout, materials, and signage, the image documents the evolving role of caf??s as multifunctional spaces supporting modern work habits. It is well suited for editorial use covering remote working, urban lifestyle, modern caf?? culture, coworking trends, and contemporary interior design in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD2421 - This image shows a burlap coffee sack marked Product of Colombia ? 70kg, photographed under warm ambient lighting that highlights the woven texture of the hessian material and the stencilled lettering. Such sacks are traditionally used to transport and store green coffee beans prior to roasting, forming a familiar visual symbol of the global coffee trade.
Colombia is one of the world's most recognisable coffee-producing countries, particularly associated with high-quality arabica beans grown in mountainous regions. The sack's utilitarian design reflects the agricultural and export origins of coffee before it reaches caf??s, roasteries, and consumers.
The warm lighting and close framing suggest an interior setting such as a caf??, coffee roastery, or specialty coffee shop, where sacks like this are often reused as d??cor to emphasise authenticity, provenance, and ethical sourcing. The image works well to illustrate themes of fair-trade coffee, sustainable consumption, global supply chains, and artisan coffee culture.
The photograph provides a tactile, atmospheric view of coffee as an agricultural commodity, connecting everyday caf?? experiences with their international origins.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD2424 - This image shows a freshly prepared cappuccino served in a ceramic cup and saucer, accompanied by a teaspoon and placed on a wooden table. The coffee is topped with a layer of foamed milk lightly dusted with cocoa or chocolate powder, giving it a warm and inviting appearance.
The neutral-toned crockery and natural wood surface suggest a relaxed community caf?? environment, typical of independent or socially focused caf??s that emphasise ethical sourcing and fair-trade coffee. The close-up composition highlights the texture of the foam and the warmth of the drink, creating a comforting, everyday caf?? scene.
Cappuccino is a popular espresso-based drink enjoyed throughout the UK, commonly associated with informal socialising, coffee breaks, and community spaces. Images like this are often used to illustrate themes of local caf?? culture, ethical consumption, and simple pleasures in daily life.
The photograph works well for editorial, lifestyle, food, and hospitality contexts, offering a timeless representation of coffee culture without identifiable branding.

In August 1998, Tesco announced a partnership with Esso, opening chains of Tesco Express stores located within forecourts, which continues today. In February 2000, the two companies were opening one new store a month, creating 4,000 jobs.
In Tampere, Finland (2007)
Esso Blue was the brand name of Esso's paraffin oil (kerosene) for domestic heaters in countries such as the United Kingdom. Their television advertising song from the 1950s, through to the 1970s, was the famous Bom, Bom, Bom, Bom, Esso Blue!
Esso traded in Northern Ireland up until the early 2000s. Their forecourts were re-branded as Maxol and some remained private.
45 of Euro Garages' forecourts were bought from Esso in 2013, and are operated under the Esso brand. They plan to roll out partner brands such as Starbucks and Spar, replacing the Esso branded shops.
Shop and Drive is an Esso branded convenience store operated in some stations, although many of their locations have franchised shops such as Nisa.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K41KR0 - Thorntons Limited is a British chocolate manufacturer owned by the Italian confectionery company, Ferrero. It was established in 1911 by Joseph William Thornton and his father in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.
When Cadbury became part of the Mondelez International predecessor Kraft Foods, Thorntons had become the largest confectionery-only parent company in Britain. The company was purchased by the Italian firm Ferrero in June 2015 for ?112m.
Until and during the Second World War, the company was an established toffee and fudge maker. With post war rationing ending, the group's primary focus shifted to Belgian and Swiss-style chocolate in sets.
Thorntons began in Sheffield in 1911, the business being started by Joseph William Thornton (1870?1919), who co opened the company's first shop, at 159 Norfolk Street. Norman, his son, became the manager, at the age of just 15. Later in the company's history, Peter Thornton (grandson of the founder) served as chairman, but was dismissed from the role in June 1987
It was announced in June 2015 that chocolate producer Ferrero would buy Thorntons, for ?112 million. Thorntons Ltd are 75% owned by Ferholding UK Ltd, which, in turn, is controlled by Giovanni Ferrero (who holds over 50% of voting rights).[citation needed]
With Ferrero investment into the business to try to increase revenue, through the financial year of 2017 to 2018 sales and production increased. Fewer new shops were opened with some existing locations diversified into caf??s, selling a range of both eat-in and take-away food and drinks alongside the traditional confectionary lines. In 2020, Thorntons won the Lausanne Index Prize - Bronze Award.
On 15 March 2021, it was announced that all 61 remaining Thorntons retail stores were to close after UK government COVID-19 pandemic restrictions lifted. The pandemic restrictions had meant that all Thorntons retail stores had closed for much of 2020, and the business was now going to restructure

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4552559482 - 'Ahh, a week of warm english weather, blossoms, daffy's, spring has definitely landed. Where church lane and Broad lane meet is a lovely spot for catching the last rays of sun before heading into the village for a quick pint before tea. I would have liked to have been able to say I could smell a BBQ but it would be a wee fib! Also a blue sky untarnished with smoke trails from planes. All air traffic thankfully grounded by the Iceland volcano.
Grappenhall on the edge of south Warrington is mentioned in the Domesday Book under the name Gropenhale. It roughly translates to 'The Groping Place' as my cousin (who has a degree in such matters but also an uncharacteristically un-catholic sense of humour) once explained to me. At the time of the Domesday Grappenhall was stated to be worth five shillings. Lets hope that was just the tax revenue.
St Wilfrid's Church has a carving of a cat on the west face of the tower. This is believed to be Lewis Carroll's inspiration for the grinning Cheshire Cat in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. I have resisted photographing the cat, although may relent if I can find a suitably creative way of doing it.
Parts of the Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes were filmed in the centre of Grappenhall. The 'large room' in Grappenhall village, was converted into a Police station for the filming of the 'Wisteria Lodge' episode of The Return of Sherlock Holmes starring Jeremy Brett. The 'Rams Head' pub was converted to the 'The Bull Hotel' in the same episode (see www.flickr.com/photos/nathanchantrell/4010783429/in/photo... ).
Grappenhall has a thriving Cricket Club and is part of the CCC. Cheshire County Cricket Club is one of the county clubs which make up the Minor Counties in the English domestic cricket structure, representing the historic county of Cheshire and playing in the Minor Counties Championship and the MCCA Knockout Trophy. The club is based at Cheadle and plays matches around the county at Boughton Hall in Chester, Nantwich, New Brighton, Grappenhall and Alderley Edge.
Oh, and by-the-way, I have reached 300 in my 365 without missing a day so far - yay! (big thanks to Jill, who helped me decide to start, way back in June - Hanx!)

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4432952215 - 'A tattoo being born at at the Manchester 2010 GMEX (Manchester Central) convention.
There are some cracking books on tattooing around. They are great for inspiration and like this chap, if I was having a large scale piece of work done it would be the ideal coffee table book to be browsing. Tat history is over 5000 year-old as proved by a tattooed mummy found in modern day Egypt. there are many fine books that document and illustrate it.
Here are some of my favourites that I have read, owned, enjoyed, had stolen or lost during the years.
The Sketchbook: 80 Unique Designs by the World's Finest Tattoo Artists.
A perfectly tattooed body requires the skills of a professional and talented artist, who creates a unique and personal design. These designs are often inspired by one or more of the various tattoo styles of Japanese, Maori or other tribal origin. 'The Sketchbook' offers the reader a selection of 80 of these unique designs by well-known and less famous, but very promising, tattoo artists from around the world. Each artist was requested to create a sketch unrestrained by commercial demands and which reflects their own personal interests.
Bodies of Inscription : A Cultural History of the Modern Tattoo Community
this is a pretty academic book. The new tattoo community described here is demographically quite different from the old. It is more female, more middle-class, and more educated, whereas the earlier society of tattoo collectors was primarily working class and male. DeMello lays out some of the social history of tattooing to prepare for her discussion of the changes in tattooing in the past 20 years. From handpicked prison tattoos to the latest in today's 'tribal' design, from gang symbols to feminist ones, tattoos themselves have changed to meet changing demands and fashions.
The Tattoo Encyclopedia: A Guide to Choosing Your Tattoo
As they should, tattoos continue to move into the mainstream and grow in popularity. For people pondering getting a tattoo, however, the choice of images can be overwhelming. A comprehensive, informative exploration of the colorful world of tattoos, The Tattoo Encyclopedia presents concise descriptions of symbols both common and unusual and sheds light on their historic, religious, and cultural significance.
Bushido
Legacies of the Japanese Tattoo. This includes over 200 cracking photos by the classic tat2 photographer Jai Tanju. The text is based largely on Takahiro Kitamuras experiences as customer and student of the famed Japanese tattoo master, Horiyoshi III.
Tattoo Art Tribal Vol.II
Tattoo Art has been producing high quality tattoo designs for over a decade. Professional tattoo artists worldwide have used Tattoo Art's wide assortment of designs to satisfy all their customer needs. The quality and variety of the tattoo designs produced by Tattoo Art has placed them among the industry leaders. Its a great index of proven designs.
Also, call me a luditte, but if it was a choice between an electronic version of one of these books (ie Kindle download), or shiny paper, i would go for the latter every time. When my Billy bookcase sags, it actually smiles. :-)

The Sanctuary cafe is between the library and Brookfield Roads' United Reformed Church (Thomas Risley Church) and can be reached from either. Its thankfully christian with a small c, even nicer when you grew up as a card carrying fallen catholic like myself.
They are usually open from about 9.30am where a fresh bacon butty (or Lymm folk may well call them Bacon Sarnies - I dont know) is a good way to start the day. They will toast it too if you ask. There is a corner for kids to play if you have a small one in tow. Lawrence the gaffer does a good job and the volunteers will always go that extra mile for you.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEY9FD - Norton Canes services is a motorway service station on the M6 Toll, in the village of Norton Canes near the towns of Brownhills, Cannock, and Walsall, in Staffordshire, England. It is operated by RoadChef, who has a 25-year lease on the site. The company also uses the site as its head office
Norton Canes services is located on the M6 Toll between junctions T6 and T7, and is positioned so that it can be accessed before reaching the main toll plaza in either direction. It is a single-sided site, unlike a large majority of other service areas which have separate facilities for each direction. For this reason it is possible to do a U-turn at the services
however, it is not possible to avoid the toll in that way.
Unlike most other service areas, where it is illegal for traffic from local roads to use the back entrance to the site, provision has been made at Norton Canes for traffic from the A5 to access the services
