Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP39R - Asda Stores Ltd is a British supermarket chain. Its headquarters are in Leeds, England. The company was founded in 1949 when the Asquith family merged their retail business with the Associated Dairies company of Yorkshire. It expanded into Southern England during the 1970s and 1980s, and acquired Allied Carpets, 61 large Gateway Supermarkets and other businesses, such as MFI Group. It sold these acquisitions during the 1990s to concentrate on the supermarkets. It was listed on the London Stock Exchange until 1999 when it was acquired by Walmart for ?œ6.7 billion. Asda was the second-largest supermarket chain in the United Kingdom between 2003 and 2014 by market share, at which point it fell into third place.
Besides its core supermarkets, the company also acts as a white label payment card provider offering assistance for insurance and payment services under the Asda Money brand and also has a mobile virtual network operator.
In February 2021, the Issa brothers and TDR Capital acquired Asda, with Walmart retaining an equity investment in Asda, a seat on the board and an ongoing commercial relationship. The deal came after an acquisition by Sainsbury's was rejected by the Competition and Markets Authority
The Asquith family were butchers based in Knottingley, Wakefield, West Yorkshire. In the 1920s, they expanded their business to seven butchers shops in the area. Their sons, Peter and Fred, later became founding members of Asda

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD739D - How to Spot When Your Bra Doesn't Fit
Rather than trying to fit a bra yourself (leave that to the bra fitting experts!) I would advise that being able to identify when your bra doesn't fit is the first important step. Breasts can change size because of so many factors? pregnancy, weight change, diet, change in medication, change in exercise routine? even if the scales aren't changing, what you're eating can sometimes make breasts change size/shape, so getting properly fitted regularly is vital.
Knowing when it's time to get a newly-fitted bra is the first crucial step to becoming empowered and finding a new (more comfortable) you. When you're measured for a bra you won't need a tape measure ? using a tape measure to measure boobs is like using one to measure a jug of water. Boobs are 3 dimensional and a tape measure is 2 dimensional ? it just doesn't work!
A good bra fitting specialist (just like a good tailor) will be able to fit you by eye. All bras fit differently and a good bra fitter should be able to fit each bra to each person. Here at Mish we look at:
The Band
A good-fitting brand should be parallel all the way around and be in line with clips at the back. 80% of the work is done by the band so it needs to be right!
Underwire
Not all bras are underwired but those that are need to have the wire sitting outside the breast tissue in the centre against the rib cage nice and flush against the skin. Sometimes it won't because of the shape of breast or sternum- each person is different.
Cups
Crucially, the breast tissue should be sitting inside the cup and not be cutting it in half to create that ?four boob' effect!
Shoulder Straps
The tension of the shoulder straps is crucial. It should have enough ?give' and be able to pull up an inch, but not around your ears! Ideally if you drop your shoulder and try to wriggle the bra strap off it shouldn't come off. If it is then it's too loose (or it could be that the band is too big).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39XH3 - This image shows clothing stalls inside Old Spitalfields Market in the Spitalfields area of East London, where racks of brightly coloured new garments line the edge of the covered market hall. The prominent red sign identifying the market is visible overhead, situating the scene within one of London's best-known historic retail spaces.
Old Spitalfields Market combines a restored Victorian iron-and-glass structure with contemporary retail activity, hosting a mix of independent traders, fashion stalls, food vendors, and pop-up shops. The tie-dye and vividly coloured clothing on display reflects the casual, youth-oriented and trend-driven nature of much of the market's fashion offer, appealing to both local shoppers and tourists.
The photograph captures everyday market life, with people browsing, walking, and carrying shopping bags beneath the high roof of the hall. The mix of historic architecture and modern retail activity illustrates how traditional London markets have adapted to changing consumer habits while retaining their role as social and commercial gathering places.
Taken indoors under natural daylight filtering through the glass roof, this image is well suited to editorial use covering London markets, retail culture, independent fashion, urban shopping environments, tourism, and the evolving character of East London's historic trading spaces.

Celebrating a special wedding anniversary? Why not have a wedding blessing or a renewal of vows in this most beautiful Chapel and complete your special day with a champagne reception and dinner in the Sir Giles Gilbert Scott Suite. (Minimum numbers apply).
Weddings may also be held in the Lady Chapel but are subject to very strict criteria and to Archbishop of Canterbury's licence limitations and conditions

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K7NBGX - Matalan is a British fashion and homeware retailer based in Knowsley, Merseyside. It was established by John Hargreaves in 1985, and is still owned by the Hargreaves family. As of 2020, the company employed over 13,000, and had 230 stores in the United Kingdom, together with franchise stores in the Middle East.
John Hargreaves opened the first Matalan store in 1985 at Bamber Bridge, near Preston, Lancashire. There were fifty stores by 1995, and in 1997, the company moved its headquarters from Preston to Skelmersdale, also in Lancashire. The company was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1998, but taken private again by the Hargreaves family in October 2006.
During 2009, John Hargreaves sought to sell off Matalan, but by February 2010, had failed to find buyers willing to meet the ?œ1.5 billion price.[4] Jason Hargreaves was appointed managing director in July 2013. The headquarters moved to a purpose built site at Knowsley, Merseyside in 2014. The company won approval for this scheme in October 2012.
Controversy
Matalan was among the companies who sourced clothes from the Rana Plaza factory in Bangladesh which collapsed, killing 1,134, in April 2013. In July 2014, they were the focus of a campaign by 38 Degrees and Labour Behind the Label, for failing to contribute to the official compensation fund coordinated by the ILO. This was in contrast to some of their main competitors, such as Primark who contributed $9 million.
After pressure, they announced that they would contribute an undisclosed amount. It was later revealed that they had paid ?œ60,000 into the fund, which labour rights campaigns challenged as being an insufficient amount compared with other retailers.
Structure
Matalan Retail Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Missouri Topco Limited, a holding company which is based in Guernsey, and is controlled by the Hargreaves family.
In the Middle East, the Matalan brand is franchised to BTC Fashion General Trading, based in Qatar. BTC have stores in

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTYF99 - Flat Eric is a puppet character, created by Quentin Dupieux (better known under his stage name Mr. Oizo), from Levi's commercials for Sta-Prest One Crease Denim Clothing, built by Jim Henson's Creature Shop. His name comes from an idea for a commercial that involved having a car run over his head and flattening it. The idea was not used, but the name stuck.
In the commercials, Flat Eric would ride with his friend Angel (played by Philippe Petit) around California, evading the police as a wanted criminal. As of 2018, Mr. Oizo still uses Flat Eric as a mascot.
Background
Flat Eric was based on a dog-like puppet called St??phane that was similar, but with ears and the hands were fixed. St??phane appeared in some short films by Mr. Oizo (including a video for the track M-Seq), and had a small cult following in the United Kingdom and France. In March 1999, Levi's decided to build a television commercial campaign around the puppet, to be directed by Oizo.
The character was renamed Eric, a more international name, in contrast to the original French name St??phane. The name Eric was chosen after Eric Morand, one of the founders of the record label F Communications.
He was made by Janet Knechtel for Jim Henson's Creature Shop, in the United Kingdom, and was performed by Drew Massey for all the Levi's commercials. The Levi's adverts took three days to shoot. The original short films made with St??phane cost around 15,000 francs to produce.[6] The two Levi's adverts cost around two or three million francs each. The rights to the character were retained by Oizo and production company Partizan.
Characteristics
Eric typically does not speak, communicating only through body language. He has only spoken in the music video for Flat Beat, doing so through electronic squawks reminiscent of Miss Othmar in the Peanuts animated specials.
Appearances
He was featured in the music videos for Flat Beat and Viandes L??gumes V??hicules by French musician Mr. Oizo

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPH6JH - Alexander Denton (1542-8 January 1576) of Hillesden in Buckinghamshire was a landowner and member of the Buckinghamshire gentry. He is best known for his two monuments, one in Hereford Cathedral the other in Hillesden Church.
Origins
He was the only child and heir of Thomas Denton (1515-1558) of Hillesden, several times a Member of Parliament, by his wife Margaret Mordaunt, a daughter of John Mordaunt, 1st Baron Mordaunt, of Turvey, Bedfordshire, and widow of Edmund Fettiplace (d.1540) of Besselsleigh, Berkshire.[1]
Marriages - he married twice:
Firstly to Anne Willison (1548-1566), who died aged 18, a daughter of Richard Willison (d.1575) of Sugwas near Hereford, by his wife Anne Elton of Ledbury,[2] whose joint monument with recumbent effigies survives, mutilated, in Madley Church.[3] Arms of Willison: A chevron between three lions rampant, as visible on the Madley Church monument and on the Denton monument in Hereford Cathedral.
Secondly he married Mary Martin (d.1574) a 15-year-old daughter and co-heiress of Sir Roger Martyn, Lord Mayor of London in 1567. Her portrait by George Gower to commemorate her marriage survives in the York Art Gallery.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2E0F12X - JD Sports Fashion plc, more commonly known as JD Sports or JD, is a British sports-fashion retail company based in Bury, Greater Manchester, England with shops throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, the United States, Asia and Australia. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. It is a subsidiary of the Pentland Group.
In 2016 and again in 2019, JD Sports was profiled in British media amid allegations of mistreatment of its UK warehouse staff
letters JD in JD Sports stand for the initials of the founders of the company, John & David. In 1981, the company was established by John Wardle and David Makin, trading from a single shop in Bury, Greater Manchester. In 1983, the company opened a store in the Arndale Centre in Manchester.
In 2020, JD Sports was anticipated to appoint administrators for its nearly bankrupt Go Outdoors brand, placing additional high street workers at risk amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
On October 16, 2020 JD Sports opened a new flagship Store in Times Square New York. In December 2020, it was announced that the company had pulled out of talks aimed at rescuing department store chain Debenhams.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AERR67 - Primark is an Irish fast fashion retailer with headquarters in Dublin, Ireland, and a subsidiary of the British food processing and retail company ABF. The company is named Penneys in the Republic of Ireland, where it was founded. The Penneys brand is not used outside of Ireland because it is owned elsewhere by American retailer J. C. Penney. The company has operations in Europe and the United States.
The company's first store, still in operation, was founded by Arthur Ryan on behalf of the Weston family (who had founded Associated British Foods in 1935) in June 1969 on 47 Mary Street, Dublin.
Success in the Republic of Ireland led to expansion into Northern Ireland, with Penneys opening a large store in Belfast City Centre in 1971. The company subsequently expanded outside of Ireland with a Primark store in Derby, England, in 1973. The company could not use the name Penneys in Europe outside Ireland as it was registered by J. C. Penney. The name Primark was then invented to use outside Ireland
Primark offers a diverse range of products, including baby and children's clothing, womenswear, menswear, homeware, accessories, footwear, beauty products and confectionery

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BCTGY0 - Iconic clothing chain Stolen from Ivor's last shop has been saved - thanks to the M.E.N.
Founder Ivor Hazan, 67, opened his first boutique on the King Street West in Manchester city centre in 1965 and his 40 stores became a Mecca for fashion hipsters across the region.
He announced last month he was to shut the doors on his last remaining shop in Stockport, which opened in 1974, due to declining sales.
However after the story was featured in the pages of the M.E.N and on our website, the brand has undergone a revival.
Ivor says he has been inundated with people coming into the shop and sharing their stories of the off-the-wall clobber they bought from him in their youth.
One man even broke down in tears whilst other wanted to buy his distinctive yellow carrier bags and sell them online.
And after seeing a spike in sales Ivor says he will keep the shop open - for now at least.
His first store opened at the height of the ?swinging' Sixties.
It was close to a boutique owned by United hero George Best and he had a gentleman's agreement that he would not sell suits if the United ace didn't sell jeans.
In 1966 it became the first store in the north of England to stock Levis jeans, which then cost ?œ2.37 a pair.
The brand grew and at its peak it had 43 stores across the north west, including Stockport, Altrincham, Bolton and Bury.
However all but seven of them were forced to close in 2002 after the company went into administration.
And Ivor said stores such as Primark were ?killing' independent stores like his.
But due to the phenomenal response after we featured their plight he has shelved plans to take his operation solely online and he will keep the doors open of the shop on Prince's Street in Stockport town centre.
The Didsbury entrepreneur said: It's just been absolutely amazing.
Since the M.E.N ran our story we've had so many people coming in and telling us about things they bought 20 years ago.
Telling us that their mums used to bring them as kids.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P8KF00 - Sir Montague Maurice Burton (15 August 1885 ? 21 September 1952) founded Burton Menswear, one of Britain's largest chains of clothes shops.
Born a Lithuanian Jew (Meshe David Osinsky) in Kaunas province, he came alone to Britain in 1900, to escape the Russian pogroms. He was well-educated, having studied in a yeshiva, but arrived unable to speak English.
By 1913 Burton had five men's tailor shops with headquarters in Sheffield and manufacturing in Leeds. He had four hundred shops, and factories and mills, by 1929, when the company went public. His firm made a quarter of the British military uniforms during World War II and a third of demobilisation clothing.
Burton declined the offer to be Lord Mayor of Leeds in 1930 but was knighted in 1931 for services to industrial relations and was a Justice of the Peace from 1924. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Antiquaries in 1940 and was awarded an honorary doctorate (DLitt) by the University of Leeds in 1944.
Legacy
Burton endowed chairs in industrial relations in the University of Leeds and Cardiff in 1929 and Cambridge in 1930. He also endowed chairs of international relations in Jerusalem (1929), and at Oxford University (1930), the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) (1936) and The University of Edinburgh (1948).
He is commemorated in the Montague Burton Residences, which are student flats at the University of Leeds.
Burton is a large United Kingdom high street clothing retailer. The company was once a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index, but became a trading name of Arcadia Group Brands Ltd, part of the Arcadia Group. Sir Philip Green acquired the Arcadia Group in 2002, and is now the sole owner of Burton. There are over 400 stores in the UK. It has also expanded to branches at out of town sites since the 1980s, such as at the Merry Hill Shopping Centre in the West Midlands, where it has had a store since November 1989.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHBJPE - Covent Garden is a district in London, on the eastern fringes of the West End, between St Martin's Lane and Drury Lane. It is associated with the former fruit-and-vegetable market in the central square, now a popular shopping and tourist site, and with the Royal Opera House, itself known as Covent Garden. The district is divided by the main thoroughfare of Long Acre, north of which is given over to independent shops centred on Neal's Yard and Seven Dials, while the south contains the central square with its street performers and most of the historical buildings, theatres and entertainment facilities, including the London Transport Museum and the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.
By 1654 a small open-air fruit-and-vegetable market had developed on the south side of the fashionable square. Gradually, both the market and the surrounding area fell into disrepute, as taverns, theatres, coffee-houses and brothels opened up. By the 18th century it had become notorious for its abundance of brothels. An Act of Parliament was drawn up to control the area, and Charles Fowler's neo-classical building was erected in 1830 to cover and help organise the market. The market grew and further buildings were added: the Floral Hall, Charter Market, and in 1904 the Jubilee Market. By the end of the 1960s traffic congestion was causing problems, and in 1974 the market relocated to the New Covent Garden Market about three miles (5 km) south-west at Nine Elms. The central building re-opened as a shopping centre in 1980 and is now a tourist location containing cafes, pubs, small shops, and a craft market called the Apple Market, along with another market held in the Jubilee Hall.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM252F - Afflecks (formerly Affleck's Palace) is an indoor market in Manchester, England, in the city's Northern Quarter on the junction of Church Street/Tib Street and Dale Street with Oldham Street. Dozens of independent stalls, small shops and boutiques operate in the one building. The building was once occupied by a department store called Affleck and Brown as a store and office space, hence the name.
Affleck's Palace first opened in 1982 by James and Elaine Walsh with an ethos of offering a safe environment for entrepreneurs to start out with affordable rent and no long term contracts. Unit holders operated under a licence agreement which allowed them to pay for space on a week by week basis. The atmosphere and colourful maze-like layout led to Affleck's becoming a mecca for alternative culture. The establishment was able to bounce back from two building fires and overcame many obstacles.
During the 1990s 'Madchester Summer of Love' period, when local bands like the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and Inspiral Carpets were at the height of their popularity
Affleck's Palace was a fashionable spot to get oversized flared jeans and tie dyed T-shirts and 'Eastern Bloc' was a popular record shop as it dealt in all the latest underground dance tunes of the time.
On 31 March 2008, Affleck's Palace ceased trading. It re-opened on 1 April 2008 as Afflecks under new management. Afflecks is now managed by Mancunian property developer Bruntwood after the expiry of a 25-year lease in 2007. It had been previously suggested that Bruntwood would redevelop the building, possibly leading to its closure as a market, with many traders having feared that closure would be likely and that notice could have been given as soon as the end of January

It had been previously suggested that Bruntwood would redevelop the building, possibly leading to its closure as a market, with many traders having feared that closure would be likely and that notice could have been given as soon as the end of January

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEJ656 - Space heaters are fixed or portable heaters in a room. This includes open coal, wood or coke fires, gas fires, portable gas fires (LPG heaters), electric fires and heaters, and oil and paraffin heaters.
What are the main causes of heating appliance fires?
Space heaters regularly cause fatalities in the home. Most accidents are caused by people's behaviour rather than technical faults in the appliances themselves. For example, standing or sitting too close to the heater, allowing clothing or other items to come too close, or leaving heaters on overnight can all cause accidents.
Who is most at risk?
Those in the age ranges 0-4 years and 70 years and over have the highest risk. Women over 70 are most at risk, as there are more women than men in this higher age group. Men are more at risk in the 30-69 age range, which may be because they are more likely to be impaired by drink or drugs at this age, or because they are more likely to tackle a fire on their own.
People living alone, those living in terraced houses and houses in multiple occupation, or in rented accommodation, and those on low incomes all tend to be at greater risk.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H542X8 - Starting with a small grocery business begun by his father, William Lever and his brother James entered the soap business in 1885 by buying a small soap works in Warrington.
The brothers teamed up with a Bolton chemist, William Hough Watson, who became an early business partner. Watson invented the process which resulted in a new soap, using glycerin and vegetable oils such as palm oil, rather than tallow.
The resulting soap was a good, free-lathering soap, at first named Honey Soap then later named Sunlight Soap. Production reached 450 tons per week by 1888. Larger premises were built on marshes at Bromborough Pool on the Wirral Peninsula at what became Port Sunlight.
Though the company was named Lever Brothers, William Lever's brother and co-director James never took a major part in running the business. He fell ill in 1895, probably as a result of diabetes, and resigned his directorship two years later

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9ERH - Tweed is a rough, woollen fabric, of a soft, open, flexible texture, resembling cheviot or homespun, but more closely woven. It is usually woven with a plain weave, twill or herringbone structure. Colour effects in the yarn may be obtained by mixing dyed wool before it is spun.
Tweeds are an icon of traditional Scottish, Irish, Welsh and English clothing, being desirable for informal outerwear, due to the material being moisture-resistant and durable. Tweeds are made to withstand harsh climates and are commonly worn for outdoor activities such as shooting and hunting, in England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland. In Ireland, tweed manufacturing is now most associated with County Donegal but originally covered the whole country. In Scotland, tweed manufacturing is most associated with the Isle of Harris in the Hebrides.
The original name of the cloth was tweel, Scots for twill, the material being woven in a twilled rather than a plain pattern. A traditional story has the name coming about almost by chance. Around 1831, a London merchant, James Locke, received a letter from a Hawick firm, Wm. Watson & Sons, Dangerfield Mills about some tweels. The merchant misinterpreted the handwriting, understanding it to be a trade-name taken from the River Tweed that flows through the Scottish Borders textile area. The goods were subsequently advertised as Tweed and the name has remained since

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9DNM - A necktie or simply tie is a long piece of cloth worn for decorative purposes around the neck or shoulders, resting under the shirt collar and knotted at the throat.
Variants include the ascot tie, bow tie, bolo tie, zipper tie, cravat and clip-on tie. The modern necktie, ascot, and bow tie are descended from the cravat. Neck ties are generally unsized, but may be available in a longer size. Men and boys wear neckties as part of regular office attire or formal wear.
Neckties can also be worn as part of a uniform (e.g. military, school and waitstaff), whereas some choose to wear them as everyday clothing attire. Neckties are traditionally worn with the top shirt button fastened, and the tie knot resting between the collar points. Among younger men, neckties are sometimes worn as a casual item, tied loosely around the neck, with the top shirt button unfastened

Full of tacky clothes shops, greasy spoon cafes, amusement arcades and stalls where you can get a new drive belt for your vacuum cleaner. You get the picture.
Amazingly it is part of a grand scheme to gut the building completely, extend the office tower to a whopping 32-storeys, add a smaller 16-storey one for good measure and repackage it as a state of the art multi-use complex. This was all reported in the Evening Times in 2009, but sadly you can still buy a processed burger in the Savoy Centre.

John Foxx And The Maths is a musical project featuring electronic music pioneers John Foxx and Benge. The duo were initially a studio based project working from Benge's studio in Shoreditch, London but have also engaged in live work. They specialise in the use of analogue synthesisers and drum machines and have released two albums, Interplay and The Shape of Things, both in 2011.
You will perhaps know John Foxx as a founder member of 1970's band Ultravox. In December 2009 the official John Foxx website Metamatic announced Foxx's new musical project. Benge had already broken the news on his own blog in November calling The Maths 'a new album project'.
An initial single Destination / September Town was released in December 2009 as download only from Townsend Records and later via i-tunes. The duo continued to work in Benge's studio in Shoreditch throughout 2010 and some new tracks were previewed at the Short Circuit electronic music festival held at The Roundhouse in London on 5 June 2010.
A new album entitled Interplay was announced in January 2011containing this track and released on March 21. The official website described the album as 'moody and atmospheric, but also full of songs that are actually more ”pop” than avant garde, Interplay pulls various strands of electronic music together – from early electro to 70s Krautrock, even flashes of Cabaret Voltaire and Foxx’s first band, Ultravox!'
The album gained much critical acclaim with The Quietus calling it 'one of the finest electronic records you will hear in 2011.
I had the pleasure of seeing them at the Manchester Academy in late 2011 - www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/6280475123/
Weddings are big business and many people looking to tie the knot visit wedding catwalk shows in hotels etc, deciding how they are going to spend the average of over £12K on their event and honeymoon. As anyone who knows me I am not a big believer in the institution, but I had an interesting day photographing the catwalk show at the Holiday Inn Wilmslow, near Manchester Airport..

The Motels are a New Wave music band from the Los Angeles area best known for 'Only the Lonely' and 'Suddenly Last Summer', each of which peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982 and 1983, respectively. Their song 'Total Control' reached no 4 on the Australian charts in 1980. Martha Davis (born January 19, 1951), the lead singer, reformed a version of the band called 'The Motels featuring Martha Davis' in 1998
as of 2010 she continues to appear under that name with various line-ups of musicians.
In March 1978, Davis and lead guitarist Jeff Jourard (formerly of a pre-fame version of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) decided to reform his early 70's band, The Motels. Extensive auditions resulted in a new line-up of the band being formed, consisting of Jourard's brother Marty, who played both the saxophone and keyboards, Michael Goodroe on bass, and Brian Glascock on drums. Short on funds, the band shared rehearsal space with The Go-Go's at L.A.'s notorious punk basement, The Masque, and they played in Chinatown, at Madame Wong's restaurant/nightclub with such regularity that they were almost considered the house band.
The Motels began to draw faithful crowds around the L.A. music scene and on Mother's Day 1979 the group signed with Capitol Records, releasing their debut album The Motels four months later. Their first single, 'Closets and Bullets', made no impact on the charts, but their second single release, 'Total Control', found its way to the Top 20 in France and the Top 10 in Australia.
In 1980 Jourard was replaced as lead guitarist by Davis' boyfriend Tim McGovern and the band went back into the recording studio to record their second album, Careful. Released in June 1980, the album climbed to the no 45 spot on the Billboard 200 chart in the U.S. In Europe and the UK, the songs 'Days Are OK' and 'Whose Problem?' became Top 50 hits
'Whose Problem?' was also a top hit in Australia and 'Danger' was a Top 20 hit in France.
The band hired record producer Val Garay for their third album, Apocalypso. It was scheduled to be released in November 1981, but after Capitol Records heard the final product, they rejected it for being 'not commercial enough' and 'too weird'. The band attempted to go back and re-record the entire album but in the process, Davis and McGovern's relationship dissolved and by December 1981 McGovern was no longer in the band (McGovern subsequently formed the band Burning Sensations).
The rest of the band members forged on to finish recording the new album, utilizing studio musicians to fill in for McGovern on several of the tracks. Adrian Peritore (who went by the name Guy Perry because his former producer had misspelled his name on an album cover) was hired in late January and played lead guitar on some of the tracks, including 'He Hit Me'. The album was released on April 5, 1982 under the title All Four One.

A cracking track from 'The Thief and the Heartbreaker' album.
Alberta Cross is a New York-based band, formed by Petter Ericson Stakee (vocals, guitar) &
Terry Wolfers (bass). Despite their different upbringings - Stakee travelled from an early age between Sweden and England with his singer-songwriter father, whilst Wolfers was brought up in London's East End - they formed what would later become Alberta Cross. After relocating to Brooklyn, New York, Stakee and Wolfers solidified the line-up with the addition of Austin Beede, Alec Higgins and Sam Kearney.
The band's sound has been compared to The Band, Neil Young, The Raconteurs and other blues-influenced rock bands.
'Lucy Rider' is heard in the series premiere of the BBC One series Survivors, as well as episode 3 of Season 1 of Dirty Sexy Money. The album is well worth checking out.

A band that I am convinced never had the recognician they deserved.
The group consisted of Peter Murphy (vocals), Daniel Ash (guitar), Kevin Haskins (drums) and David J (bass). The band was originally Bauhaus 1919 before they dropped the numerical portion within a year of formation. With their dark and gloomy sound and image, Bauhaus are generally considered the first gothic rock group.
Bauhaus first broke up in 1983. Peter Murphy began a solo career while the other members continued as Tones on Tail and, later, Love and Rockets. Both enjoyed greater commercial success in the United States than Bauhaus had, but disappeared from the charts in their homeland. The band reunited for a 1998 tour and on a more permanent basis in 2005. The group announced plans to disband again following the release of their final album, Go Away White, in 2008.
The band started on the 4AD label and moved quickly to Beggars Banquet, who was their parent. 'Kick in the Eye' was the debut release on the label.
Bauhaus combined a number of influences including punk music, glam rock, and Krautrock—even funk and dub—to create a gloomy and introspective sound which appealed to many fans left disillusioned by the New Wave that arose in the wake of punk's collapse.
Their sound proved influential, inspiring or bringing attention to a whole wave of post-punk groups delving into the intense, gloomy style that would eventually come to be known as gothic rock. Its crucial elements included Peter Murphy's deep and sonorous voice, Daniel Ash's innovative guitar playing and David J's dub-influenced bass.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BM3JKR - A cotton mill is a building housing spinning or weaving machinery for the production of yarn or cloth from cotton, an important product during the Industrial Revolution in the development of the factory system.
Although some were driven by animal power, most early mills were built in rural areas at fast-flowing rivers and streams using water wheels for power. The development of viable steam engines by Boulton and Watt from 1781 led to the growth of larger, steam-powered mills allowing them to be concentrated in urban mill towns, like Manchester, which with neighbouring Salford had more than 50 mills by 1802.
The mechanisation of the spinning process in the early factories was instrumental in the growth of the machine tool industry, enabling the construction of larger cotton mills. Limited companies were developed to construct mills, and the trading floors of the cotton exchange in Manchester, created a vast commercial city. Mills generated employment, drawing workers from largely rural areas and expanding urban populations. They provided incomes for girls and women. Child labour was used in the mills, and the factory system led to organised labour. Poor conditions became the subject of expos??s, and in England, the Factory Acts were written to regulate them.
The cotton mill, originally a Lancashire phenomenon, was copied in New England and later in the southern states of America. In the 20th century, North West England lost its supremacy to the United States, then to Japan and subsequently to China.

This is certainly a shop I would expect to find on 'Charlotte Street'.
Rattlesnakes was the debut album released in 1984 by Lloyd Cole and the Commotions. The band formed in Glasgow and were a great success in the second half of the 1980's. The band were formed whilst Cole (who was born in Derbyshire, England) was studying at the University of Glasgow. After signing to Polydor Records, the band had a Top 40 UK hit with their debut single 'Perfect Skin' in Spring 1984.
The follow-up album, Easy Pieces, was produced by Clive Langer (ex Deaf School guitarist) &
Alan Winstanley (who had previously produced Madness, The Teardrop Explodes and Elvis Costello and the Attractions). Released in November 1985, the album was a much quicker commercial success than its predecessor (entering the UK album chart at no 5 and certified Gold within a month). The singles 'Brand New Friend' and 'Lost Weekend' were the band's first and only UK Top 20 hits (charting 19 and 17 respectively).
To track down some more Lloyd Cole, checkout 'Live at the BBC', volumes 1 and 2 (2007), which contains BBC broadcasts of live shows between 1984 and 1986.
Some trivia about Charlotte St, nothing to do with Lloyd Cole. Theresa Berkley was an early 19th century dominatrix who ran a brothel in at 28 Charlotte Street in London (now 84-94 Hallam Street), specialising in flagellation. Well I never!
Tell her I sent you!

It is one of the longest running in the country and attracts thousands of visitors to the city's Gay Village, centred around Canal Street, each year. The festival's events that take place within the Village require a paid-for Pride wristband for entry, while other events, such as the parade, can be watched by any spectator.
The current ten day festival includes a Pride Fringe with a series of arts, music and cultural events all over the city as well as community events including poetry readings, quizzes and film showings, culminating in The Big Weekend, a 72-hour party during the August bank holiday weekend in Canal Street and the surrounding area, with a parade through the streets of Manchester.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF2205 - A trolley of birthday cakes in a UK Tesco store.
A supermarket, a form of grocery store, is a self-service store offering a wide variety of food and household merchandise, organized into departments. It is larger in size and has a wider selection than a traditional grocery store, also selling items typically found in a convenience store, but is smaller and more limited in the range of merchandise than a hypermarket or big-box store.
The supermarket typically comprises meat, fresh produce, dairy, and baked goods departments, along with shelf space reserved for canned and packaged goods as well as for various non-food items such as household cleaners, pharmacy products and pet supplies. Most supermarkets also sell a variety of other household products that are consumed regularly, such as alcohol (where permitted), medicine, and clothes, and some stores sell a much wider range of non-food products.
The traditional suburban supermarket occupies a large amount of floor space, usually on a single level. It is usually situated near a residential area in order to be convenient to consumers. Its basic appeal is the availability of a broad selection of goods under a single roof, at relatively low prices. Other advantages include ease of parking and frequently the convenience of shopping hours that extend far into the evening or even 24 hours a day. Supermarkets usually allocate large budgets to advertising, typically through newspapers. They also present elaborate in-store displays of products. The stores are usually part of corporate chains that own or control (sometimes by franchise) other supermarkets located nearby?even transnationally?thus increasing opportunities for economies of scale.
Supermarkets typically are supplied by the distribution centres of their parent companies, usually in the largest city in the province.

Forming a soundtrack to much of my 1980's, 'The The' are an English musical and multimedia group that have been active in various forms since 1979, with singer/songwriter Matt Johnson being the only constant band member.
In 1993, the five-piece line-up issued the album Dusk containing this single. It debuted at no 2 in the UK and spun off three Top 40 singles in the UK, led by 'Dogs of Lust'. A world tour followed, the Lonely Planet tour, at which point the band's line-up was reshuffled
Johnny Marr and James Eller left, and were replaced by Atlanta based guitarist Keith Joyner and New York bassist Jared Nickerson, respectively.
Also added was Boston harmonica player Jim Fitting, who auditioned in New York in early 1993. The version of their hit 'This Is The Day' featuring Jim Fitting was often dubbed 'That Was The Day'. Palmer bowed out partway through the tour and was replaced by ex Stabbing Westward drummer Andy Kubiszewski.
A full length film, directed by long time collaborator Tim Pope, was made for this album. From Dusk Til Dawn was shot in New Orleans and New York and along with Johnson and Johnny Marr also featured various characters from the New York underground scene such as sexologist Annie Sprinkle, writer and raconteur Quentin Crisp, Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa, and porn star Rick Savage amongst many other carnival characters.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEJ65B - Space heaters are fixed or portable heaters in a room.

The shopfront features large display windows showing second-hand clothing, household items, books, and bric-a-brac, with warm interior lighting visible from the street. Prominent signage across the fascia clearly identifies the charity and its role in providing hospice and palliative care services.
Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care is a well-established regional charity supporting people with advanced illness, as well as their families and carers, across parts of Surrey and Hampshire. Charity shops such as this one play a vital role in funding hospice services, relying on donations, volunteers, and local community support.
The image captures a typical British high-street charity shop scene, reflecting the importance of voluntary sector retail in town centres and the everyday visibility of hospice fundraising within local communities. The photograph is suitable for editorial and commercial uses relating to UK charities, hospice care, community fundraising, volunteering, and the role of charity retail in sustaining healthcare services.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9E7W - A necktie or simply tie is a long piece of cloth worn for decorative purposes around the neck or shoulders, resting under the shirt collar and knotted at the throat.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HF98 - The Many Reasons Why Women Love Shoes So Very Much
By the time you've reached the shoe store, the body has begun to release dopamine and serotonin as well as norepinephrine and oxytocin
Women love shoes
it's an indisputable fact! Some women love high heels
some women love shoes that are bejewelled and bedazzled, some love Western boots, some love gladiator sandals, some love ballet pumps and some love thick, heavy boots. Whatever your shoe of choice, we know you love them. Ladies stalk through the pages of fashion magazines or blogs, searching for discounted designer fashion, we trawl through vintage and second-hand shops looking for just the right pair of already worn-in leather, we window shop with eyes lit up like Christmas trees. No judgement here
shoes are the best! The question is, why do women love shoes so much? I mean, in the end, they're really just safety coverings for your feet?aren't they? Let's unpack some of the reasons why women love shoes so much.
Shoes: A Love Story
There's the obvious reason, of course: shoes are pretty. I can't count the times I have seen a gorgeous woman walking down the street. Her hair is blowing softly in the breeze, her face alight with happiness, her outfit perfectly coordinated and then?boom, bad shoes. A bad shoe can destroy all the beauty in a perfect outfit, in the same way, a beautiful shoe serves to complement it. A lovely pair of shoes is the star on top of the tree
no outfit is quite complete without it! There's a shoe to suit every kind of woman. If you like adding a little height and extending those gorgeous legs, then high heels are for you. Platforms, stilettos, boots?and the list goes on
Curator of a recent exhibition at F.I.T. in New York, Valerie Steele, believes that shoes become an extension of a woman's body and that they say a lot about our social status, sexuality, ethics and attitude. Valerie wondered if perhaps, the sculptural quality of shoes is part of the reason
