Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXHHD4 - Scotland's Low Emission Zones
Protecting public health by improving air quality while helping to meet our climate change emission reduction targets
Low Emission Zones (LEZs) are a moving traffic contravention, preventing the most polluting vehicles driving within an area, which improves air quality and helps to protect public health.
LEZs operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year round (including all Public Holidays such as Christmas Day and Boxing Day).
Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras are linked to local and national vehicle licencing databases, to monitor all vehicles driving in a LEZ. They will detect vehicles which do not comply with the emission standards. Stationary vehicles are not subject to LEZ restrictions.
Scottish LEZs will be enforced by Penalty Charge Notice (PCN), there is no facility for pre-payment.? When a non-compliant vehicle is detected driving within a LEZ a PCN is issued to the registered keeper of that vehicle.?
Emission Standards
A vehicle may only drive within a LEZ if it meets the specified emission standards.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG1TWA - A public electric vehicle street charger manufactured by EBGO, photographed in the village of Heptonstall, Calderdale, West Yorkshire. The charger is mounted on a pavement edge and protected by metal bollards, designed to prevent accidental vehicle impact and ensure safe public use.
Street-level EV charging points such as this form an increasingly important part of the UK's transition towards low-emission transport. Installed in residential and village locations, they support drivers without access to private driveways, enabling overnight and short-stay charging for electric cars and vans.
Heptonstall is a small Pennine village above the Calder Valley, and the presence of modern EV infrastructure reflects the spread of sustainable transport technology beyond major towns and cities into rural communities. The charger's compact, upright design and digital interface demonstrate the integration of smart technology into everyday streetscapes.
Photographed in daylight with surrounding greenery and pavement visible, the image documents the practical reality of electric vehicle infrastructure at a local level. It is suitable for editorial use relating to climate policy, electric vehicles, rural sustainability, public infrastructure investment, and the decarbonisation of transport in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NCX1FE - Fiddlers Ferry Power Station is a decommissioned coal fired power station located in Warrington, Cheshire, England. Opened in 1971, the station had a generating capacity of 1,989 megawatts and took water from the River Mersey. After privatisation in 1990, the station was operated by various companies, and from 2004 to 2022 by SSE Thermal. The power station closed on 31 March 2020. The site was acquired by Peel NRE in July 2022.
With its eight 114-metre (374 ft) high cooling towers and 200-metre (660 ft) high chimney, the station is a prominent local landmark and can be seen from as far away as the Peak District and the Pennines.
An application to build Fiddlers Ferry Power Station was proposed in 1962. It was built by the Cleveland Bridge Company between 1964 and 1971, and came into full operation in 1973
The station generated electricity using four 500 MW generating sets and consumed 195 million litres of water daily from the River Mersey
On 18 November 2015, Amber Rudd, the then Minister in charge of the Department of Energy & Climate Change, proposed that the UK's remaining coal-fired power stations will be shut by 2025 with their use restricted by 2023
In September 2022, site owner Peel NRE submitted its plans to Warrington Council for the demolition of the power station's four northern cooling towers

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNBY6H - Spike Island is a park in Widnes, Halton, North-West England. It is an artificial island between the Sankey Canal and the estuary of the River Mersey containing parkland, woodland, wetlands and footpaths. It is next to the Catalyst Science Discovery Centre, an interactive science and technology museum.
Spike Island was at the centre of the British chemical industry during the industrial revolution. In 1833, Widnes Dock, the world's first rail-to-ship dock, was built on the island. In 1848, John Hutchinson built the first chemical factory in Widnes on the island. The chemical industry in Widnes grew rapidly thereafter. By the 1970s no working chemical factories remained, and from 1975 onwards the island was cleaned up and turned over to public recreation.
A famous concert by The Stone Roses, subsequently the subject of an eponymous film, took place on the island in May 1990.
History
Drawing of the island in 1875
View of the Sankey Canal from Spike island circa 1900
Spike Island is an artificial island created in 1833 when the Sankey Canal was extended from Fiddler's Ferry to the River Mersey at Widnes. The extension separated a section of Widnes previously called Woodend from the remainder of the town.[1] The canal passes from the West Bank Locks on Spike Island to Warrington and then into St. Helens town centre. The canal fell into disuse and closed in 1963. The canal footpath now forms part of the Trans Pennine Trail.
Widnes Dock, built in 1833, was the first rail-to-ship dock in the world. Uniquely the dock allowed goods, such as coal, to be taken off a train and deposited directly into a boat for transport along the River Mersey to other parts of the UK and abroad. Goods and raw materials could also be brought in by boat and deposited directly onto a train for onward travel to local factories. The dock was topped up with water from the nearby reservoir to prevent its level becoming too low when the River Mersey was at low tide.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JEKT23 - How Wheat Shortage Is Sparking a Global Food Crisis
While climate change heightens competition for the already limited resources, many non-climate stressors are also putting immense pressure on our food system. Recently, all eyes are on the wheat shortage, as experts warn it could spark a global food crisis. The world's wheat supply is under immense pressure as the conflict in Ukraine as well as increasingly devastating weather events threaten production around the world. What sparked the issue and how are countries dealing with the shortage?
Why Is Everyone So Concerned About Wheat?
Following corn and soybeans, wheat is the third most common and widespread crop. As one of the oldest, cheapest, and most versatile grains, it remains today a critical component of food security.
This nutritious grain is essential in ensuring a sustainable global food supply for current and future generations. For centuries, wheat has been a staple ingredient not only in industrialised nations but especially in developing countries. Today, over 80% of the world's wheat is used for flour.
Despite being so widespread around the world, wheat production is in the hands of just a few countries. A staggering 86% of global wheat exports come from only seven countries, while just three of them hold nearly 68% of the world's wheat reserves, with some of the world's most vulnerable and impoverished countries relying on them for more than half of their wheat imports.

Both Ukraine and Russia are key players in the highly concentrated international wheat market. Described by many as the breadbaskets for much of the world, these two nations alone account for just under 30% of the world's wheat exports. Most of the wheat they produce is sent to North Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, with countries like Egypt, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Turkey, and Yemen among the largest importers. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JDJ540 - Barley (Hordeum vulgare), a member of the grass family, is a major cereal grain grown in temperate climates globally. It was one of the first cultivated grains, particularly in Eurasia as early as 10,000 years ago. Globally 70% of barley production is used as animal fodder,[4] while 30% as a source of fermentable material for beer and certain distilled beverages, and as a component of various foods. It is used in soups and stews, and in barley bread of various cultures. Barley grains are commonly made into malt in a traditional and ancient method of preparation.
In 2017, barley was ranked fourth among grains in quantity produced (149 million tonnes or 330 billion pounds) behind maize, rice and wheat
Two-row barley, sometimes considered a separate species, H. distichon, has a lower protein content than six-row barley, thus a more fermentable sugar content. High-protein barley is best suited for animal feed. Malting barley is usually lower protein (low grain nitrogen, usually produced without a late fertilizer application) which shows more uniform germination, needs shorter steeping, and has less protein in the extract that can make beer cloudy. Two-row barley is traditionally used in English ale-style beers, with two-row malted summer barley being preferred for traditional German beers

An application to build Fiddler's Ferry Power Station was proposed in 1962.It was built by the Cleveland Bridge Company between 1964 and 1971, and came into full operation in 1973.There are eight cooling towers arranged in two groups of four located to the north and south of the main building. There is a single chimney located to the east of the main building. One of the station's cooling towers collapsed in high winds on 13 January 1984 and was rebuilt. When it was built, the station mainly burned coal mined in the South Yorkshire Coalfield and transported across the Pennines on the Manchester-Sheffield-Wath electric railway. Later the coal was imported.
Between 2006 and 2008 Fiddlers Ferry was fitted with Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) plant to reduce the emissions of sulphur by 94%, meeting the European Large Combustion Plant Directive. In 2010, the station was being considered for the installation of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) equipment. This would reduce the station's emissions of nitrogen oxides, to meet the requirements of the Industrial Emissions (Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control) Directive. The SCR technology would replace the Separated Over Fire Air (SOFA) technology which was used in the station. The SCR equipment was not fitted due to uncertainty over the future of the plant.
The station was built by the Central Electricity Generating Board CEGB

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AHGCJX - Hearing, or auditory perception, is the ability to perceive sounds by detecting vibrations, changes in the pressure of the surrounding medium through time, through an organ such as the ear. The academic field concerned with hearing is auditory science.
Sound may be heard through solid, liquid, or gaseous matter. It is one of the traditional five senses
partial or total inability to hear is called hearing loss.
In humans and other vertebrates, hearing is performed primarily by the auditory system: mechanical waves, known as vibrations, are detected by the ear and transduced into nerve impulses that are perceived by the brain (primarily in the temporal lobe). Like touch, audition requires sensitivity to the movement of molecules in the world outside the organism. Both hearing and touch are types of mechanosensation.
The outer ear includes the pinna, the visible part of the ear, as well as the ear canal which terminates at the eardrum, also called the tympanic membrane. The pinna serves to focus sound waves through the ear canal toward the eardrum. Because of the asymmetrical character of the outer ear of most mammals, sound is filtered differently on its way into the ear depending on what vertical location it is coming from. This gives these animals the ability to localize sound vertically. The eardrum is an airtight membrane, and when sound waves arrive there, they cause it to vibrate following the waveform of the sound.
Hearing loss is associated with Alzheimer's disease and dementia with a greater degree of hearing loss tied to a higher risk. There is also an association between type 2 diabetes and hearing loss

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFFP2N - The Environment Agency (EA) is a non-departmental public body, established in 1995 and sponsored by the United Kingdom government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), with responsibilities relating to the protection and enhancement of the environment in England (and until 2013 also Wales).
Purpose
The Environment Agency's stated purpose is, to protect or enhance the environment, taken as a whole so as to promote the objective of achieving sustainable development (taken from the Environment Act 1995, section 4). Protection of the environment relates to threats such as flood and pollution. The vision of the Agency is of a rich, healthy and diverse environment for present and future generations.
Scope
The Environment Agency's remit covers almost the whole of England, about 13 million hectares of land, 22,000 miles (35,000 km) of river and 3,100 miles (5,000 km) of coastline seawards to the three-mile limit which includes 2 million hectares of coastal waters.[2] In a sharing arrangement with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), it also exercises some of its functions over parts of the catchments of the River Tweed and the Border Esk which are, for the most part, in Scotland. Similarly, in an arrangement with NRW, political and operational areas are not coterminus. NRW staff exercise responsibility for parts of the River Dee (Wales) in England and EA staff exercise operational responsibility for those parts of the River Severn catchment in Wales.
Structure
The Environment Agency employs around 11,200 staff. It is organised into eight directorates that report to the chief executive.
There are two policy and process directorates. One deals with Flood and Coastal Risk Management and the other with Environment and Business. These are backed up by the Evidence directorate. The fourth directorate is a single Operations delivery unit, responsible for national services, and line management of all the Regional and Area staff.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT318 - Warrington was founded by the Romans at an important crossing place on the River Mersey. A new settlement was established by the Saxons. By the Middle Ages, Warrington had emerged as a market town at the lowest bridging point of the river. A local tradition of textile and tool production dates from this time.
The modern Borough of Warrington was formed in 1974 with the amalgamation of the former County Borough of Warrington, part of the Golborne Urban District, the Lymm Urban District, part of the Runcorn Rural District, the Warrington Rural District and part of the Whiston Rural District.
The River Mersey runs through the heart of the town dividing it in two. There are only two main thoroughfares crossing the Mersey in Warrington: at Warrington Bridge at Bridge Foot and at the Kingsway Bridge. Before the M6 was built, these routes were very busy with through traffic.
The Manchester Ship Canal runs through the south of the town
three swing bridges and a high-level cantilever bridge provide crossing points. Although shipping movements on the ship canal are far less frequent than in years past, they can cause severe delay to local road traffic. The Bridgewater Canal runs through the borough from the village of Lymm to Walton Hall and Gardens, a local park/leisure area. The course of the Sankey Canal runs through the west of the town, although most of it is not suitable for navigation. More than 2,000 Warrington homes and businesses will benefit from the town's multi-million pound flood defence scheme, officially opened today (26 January 2018) by Environment Agency Chief Executive, Sir James Bevan and the town's Mayor, Councillor Les Morgan.
The scheme is one of the largest value flood defence projects constructed in the region in recent times, and will significantly reduce flood risk to the town which has been no stranger to flooding ? given it sits in naturally low-lying land and within the path of the River Mersey and its tributaries.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT319 - Warrington was founded by the Romans at an important crossing place on the River Mersey.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A6YWDT - MIKE Amesbury is calling for an urgent investigation into flooding which hit Northwich over the weekend. The town's MP spent Sunday at the scene along with Environment Agency staff, speaking to residents and businesses who had been impacted by the flooding.
He has now written to the Environment Agency and Environment Secretary Theresa Villiers calling for an urgent probe into the flooding. Waitrose car park was flooded.
Mike said: This has had a devastating impact on many local residents and it's clear questions need to be answered about what happened.
Environment Agency and council staff on the ground did a fantastic job at the scene, but in terms of the wider picture we need to know how this happened so we can ensure it doesn't happen again.
Flood defences were put to the test in July 2018.
New ?7m defences were installed in June 2017, after costly floods hit the town centre ? which sits at the the confluence of the rivers Weaver and Dane ? in 2000 and again in 2012.
While the first phase of demountable barriers was put up on Friday night, Waitrose car park and Dane Street flooded on Saturday ? with photos showing drains in the road struggling to cope.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P9MD60 - Center-pivot irrigation (sometimes called central pivot irrigation), also called water-wheel and circle irrigation, is a method of crop irrigation in which equipment rotates around a pivot and crops are watered with sprinklers. A circular area centered on the pivot is irrigated, often creating a circular pattern in crops when viewed from above (sometimes referred to as crop circles). Most center pivots were initially water-powered, and today most are propelled by electric motors.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDM1FR - Murals in Northern Ireland have become symbols of Northern Ireland, depicting the region's past and present political and religious divisions.
Belfast and Derry contain arguably the most famous political murals in Europe. It is believed that almost 2,000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. In 2014, the book, The Belfast Mural Guide estimated that, in Belfast, there were approximately 300 quality murals on display, with many more in varying degrees of age and decay. Murals commemorate, communicate and display aspects of culture and history. The themes of murals often reflect what is important to a particular community. A mural therefore exists to express an idea or message and could generally be seen as reflecting values held dear to that community.
In Irish republican areas the themes of murals can range from the 1981 Irish hunger strike, with particular emphasis on strike leader Bobby Sands
murals of international solidarity with revolutionary groups are equally common, as are those which highlight a particular issue, for example the Ballymurphy Massacre or the McGurk's Bar bombing. In working class unionist communities, murals are used to promote Ulster loyalist paramilitary groups such as the Ulster Defence Association and Ulster Volunteer Force and commemorate their deceased members. However traditional themes such as William III of England and the Battle of the Boyne, the Battle of the Somme and the 36th Ulster Division are equally common

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RDAW24 - Whether you're at home or abroad, you can still enjoy the sunshine with these tips:
use a water-resistant UVA and B sunscreen of at least SPF 30 for best protection. The higher the SPF, the more effective the sun protection
put in on all parts of your skin that are in the sun, and reapply through the day, especially after a swim as it might wash off (even if it's water resistant)
stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm ? it's at its most dangerous then
don't try to get burnt - a lot of young people think that burning = tanning. You don't need to burn so you can tan

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXHHDC - Scotland's Low Emission Zones

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF0N73 - A wide panoramic view of Stornoway Harbour on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, showing a vivid rainbow arcing through heavy Atlantic cloud as sunlight breaks across the town and waterfront. The calm surface of the harbour reflects moored fishing boats, harbour structures and colourful shoreline buildings, creating a layered composition that contrasts tranquillity with the unsettled weather above. Dark storm clouds dominate the sky, while the rainbow introduces a moment of brightness and visual optimism typical of rapidly changing conditions in the Western Isles.
Stornoway is the largest town in the Outer Hebrides and functions as the main port, commercial centre and transport hub for Lewis and Harris. The harbour plays a central role in the local economy, supporting fishing, ferry services and maritime trade, and remains a focal point of daily island life. The presence of working boats alongside residential and commercial buildings highlights the close relationship between community and sea that defines the Hebridean experience.
Rainbows are a frequent but fleeting feature of the Hebridean climate, produced by fast-moving weather systems rolling in from the Atlantic Ocean. This image captures that distinctive combination of dramatic skies, calm water and sudden light that characterises coastal Scotland. The scene evokes themes of resilience, isolation, natural beauty and continuity in remote island communities.
This image is well suited for editorial use covering Scottish islands, coastal weather, maritime life, climate and environment, travel and tourism in the Outer Hebrides, as well as commercial applications requiring atmospheric coastal imagery with strong natural symbolism.
