Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAX1E - A close view of a historic shopfront at 32 Seel Street in Liverpool city centre, showing a faded painted fascia sign reading Grants, preserved above the modern frontage. The weathered lettering and muted tones identify the sign as a ghost sign, a remnant of an earlier commercial use that has survived successive changes to the building.
Set within a brick-built commercial property close to Liverpool's Chinatown district, the image highlights layers of urban history visible in everyday streetscapes. Details such as the original shop numbering, decorative woodwork and traditional proportions suggest late Victorian or early twentieth-century retail architecture, typical of Liverpool's once dense network of small independent shops.
Ghost signs such as this are increasingly valued as informal records of social and economic history, offering insight into lost businesses and changing patterns of trade. In Liverpool, where regeneration and redevelopment have reshaped much of the city centre, surviving details like the Grants shopfront contribute to a sense of continuity and place, appealing to historians, photographers and visitors interested in urban heritage and architectural archaeology.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JGJEE9 - One of Chinatown's most noticeable landmarks is the archway on Faulkner Street. The paifang, underneath which road traffic passes, was specially built in China and shipped over in three containers. Construction commenced over Christmas 1986 and was completed by Easter 1987, a year after the city of Manchester was twinned with Wuhan. The structure was a gift from Manchester City Council to the Chinese community, and is adorned with dragons and phoenixes.
After many years exposed to the elements, the arch required restoration work to be undertaken
netting was wrapped around a part of the structure to prevent further tiles from dislodging. The Manchester Chinatown Community Group undertook a series of charity events, including a dry land dragon boat race in June 2012. In early 2013 the archway was repaired by Manchester and Cheshire Construction Company. It is the only one in Europe and regarded as more decorative than the one in San Francisco. Designed and built by a team of engineers from Peking, it is decorated with ceramics, lacquer, paint and gold leaf.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK5M5 - The Gladstone Pottery Museum is a working museum of a medium-sized coal-fired pottery, typical of those once common in the North Staffordshire area of England from the time of the industrial revolution in the 18th century to the mid 20th century. It is a grade II* listed building.[1]
The museum is located in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. It is also included in one of the regional routes of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.[2] Despite the name of the museum, it is a complex of buildings from two works, the Gladstone and the Roslyn.[3] The protected features include the kilns. As there are less than 50 surviving bottle ovens in Stoke-on-Trent (and only a scattering elsewhere in the UK), the museum's kilns along with others in the Longton conservation area represent a significant proportion of the national stock of the structures.
The museum is centred on the Roslyn pottery. It contains two biscuit ovens and two larger glost ovens. In addition are two enamel kilns. A tandem compound steam engine by Marshall & Sons, of Gainsborough, Lincolnshire is in place but it is turned by an electric motor. The two muffle kilns came from elsewhere.
The museum allows the visitor to explore the bottle kilns and exhibits the principal ancillary rooms: the engine house, the slip room, saggar making workshop. It shows aspects of working with clay- including hands on displays of throwing, moulding and decorating. Colour and gilding is presented as interpretive panels.
There is a gallery explaining the history of the tile: how it was pressed glazed and decorated. In one tableau the Gladstone Vase by Frederick Alfred Rhead is displayed.
There is also a gallery charting the history of sanitary ware, privies, earth closets and water closets

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GJBNKH - Chinatown in Manchester, England is an ethnic enclave in the city centre. It is the second largest Chinatown in the United Kingdom and the third largest in Europe. It has an archway on Faulkner Street which was completed in 1987 and contains many Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Nepali, Vietnamese, Singaporean and Malaysian restaurants, shops, bakeries and supermarkets.
The first settlers to arrive in the city came in the early 20th century
according to the BBC, Many arrived alone and were engaged in what was seen as the traditional trade of laundries. Manchester's first Chinese restaurant, Ping Hong, opened on Mosley Street in 1948, on the eve of a Chinese immigration wave that would commence during the 1950s. Manchester did not have a significant Chinese population, reaching only about 2,000. However, after World War II, there were severe labour shortages, and in response, the government passed the British Nationality Act 1948, which allowed easier access into the country. Additionally, Hong Kong's rapid urbanisation meant that many farmers and traditional residents' homes were being destroyed by the urban sprawl, so many decided to migrate.
The area's beginnings are rooted in the restaurant business, as many Chinese restaurants surfaced soon after the immigration boom. By the 1970s other Chinese businesses began to emerge, such as medicine shops, Chinese supermarkets, as well as financial and legal services, all serving the employees of the expanding number of Chinese restaurants in the area. There was even a Hong Kong government office and a branch of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation during the 1970s. In 1989 the Chinese Arts Centre opened in Chinatown. In 2013 the Bank of East Asia opted to open their first Manchester branch in Chinatown, situated on Charlotte Street. The branch officially opened on 25 October 2013, in a ceremony attended by the Lord Mayor of Manchester.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DBHPT4 - The company was founded in 1775 by John Aynsley in Lane End, Longton, Staffordshire. In 1861 his grandson John Aynsley built the historic Portland Works on Sutherland Road, Longton, Staffordshire. The company's profitability made it a desirable acquisition. In June 1970 Spode put in a bid, this was then topped in July by Denbyware. Discussions then followed with Waterford Glass and a ?1 million bid was agreed. In 1970 John Aynsley and Sons was taken over by Waterford and renamed Aynsley China Ltd. In 1987 Waterford sold the company in order to focus the group's fine china sales on the worldwide Wedgwood brand.
In May 1997, Aynsley China was acquired by The Belleek Pottery Group in Ireland. The company closed its Stoke-on-Trent factory in September 2014. As of July 2015 the factory shop is still open but its future is uncertain as the site is being advertised as for sale.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D9MJM2 - Dragon Boat race from Peel press release at http://www.mediacityuk.co.uk/p/splashes-of-fun-at-first-peel-dragon-boat-event-at-mediacityuk
On a very damp day in Manchester, surveyors, solicitors, Peel employees and MediaCityUK occupiers including ITV, BBC, Nuffield Health and WYG turned out to race in three gripping head-to-head heats which culminated in an exciting grand finale.
Before the racing began, the guests were treated to a canap?? reception in Damson MediaCityUK overlooking the piazza.
The weary but triumphant team from dock10, the studio operators, were presented with the glass trophy, medals and champagne and then celebrated with all the other participants and other participants at On the 7th, a private members bar located in the Blue Tower at MediaCityUK.
The losing team of local SMEs which included the Rugby Football League, Carbon Digital and Glue were presented with the wooden paddle award and a jovial hint to try harder next year.
The aim of the event was to raise awareness of the on-going activity at the vibrant MediaCityUK destination and all it offers, from offices to restaurants, retail and leisure in an impressive waterside location.
Liza Marco, Property Manager at Peel said, Peel's first Dragon Boat Racing Event at MediaCityUK was a huge success and it was a pleasure to see over 250 people take part in a fun, networking event which showcased MediaCityUK's amenities. We decided to hold an event at MediaCityUK following two successful Dragon Boat Events A Division of at Peel's Princes Dock development in Liverpool. We are looking forward to hosting the rematch next year!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DD4HE9 - Leicester Square is a London Underground station in Theatreland and Chinatown, in the West End of London. It is located on Charing Cross Road, a short distance to the east of Leicester Square itself.
The station is on the Northern line, between Charing Cross and Tottenham Court Road, and the Piccadilly line, between Piccadilly Circus and Covent Garden. It is in Travelcard Zone 1.
On early Tube plans, the station was listed as Cranbourn Street, but the present name was used when the station was first opened by the Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway on 15 December 1906.
Like other stations on the original sections of the Piccadilly and Northern lines, the station was originally constructed with lifts providing access to the platforms. The increase in passenger numbers in the 1920s as the Northern line was extended north (to Edgware) and south (to Morden) and the expected further increase from the 1930s extensions of the Piccadilly line led to the reconstruction of the station below ground in the early 1930s. New station entrances were constructed to a new sub-surface ticket hall. As with the similar sub-surface ticket hall previously built at Piccadilly Circus this was excavated partially under the roadway. From there banks of escalators were provided down to both sets of platforms. The redundant lifts were removed but the lift shaft remains in use as a ventilation shaft hidden behind a small door on the first landing of the Cranbourn street entrance stairs. The redeveloped station opened in 1935.
The escalators down to the Piccadilly line were the longest on the entire Underground network, being 54 m (177 ft) in length, until the rebuilding and reopening of Angel in 1992, which overtook Leicester Square with its 60 m (197 ft) escalators.
Offices above the red terracotta station building on the east side of Charing Cross Road were once occupied by the Northern line management staff but now have a variety of functions in addition to the Northern line

The mill is ?in steam' several times a year when the 1903 boiler is fired and historic machinery can be seen working. Situated in a pleasant location at the junction of the Trent & Mersey, and Caldon Canals the museum is also a perfect stop-off for walkers, cyclists and boaters.
Although the museum currently operates as part of Stoke-on-Trent City Council's Museum Service, the Friends of Etruria Industrial Museum ? a group of enthusiastic supporters and volunteers ? have decided to set up a small charity to help preserve and develop Etruria Industrial Museum for the benefit of the public
