The benches commemorate the work of the American personnel who served at RAF Burtonwood from 1940 to its closure in 1993, and the vital role that RAF Burtonwood played in the Berlin Airlift.
RAF Burtonwood was opened in 1940 and was transferred to the US military in June 1942, during which time it became the largest air base in Europe during the Second World War.
In June 1948, and after the post-war division of Germany, the Soviet Union closed all the roads, railways and canals from Western-occupied Germany into Western-occupied Berlin.
The Western Allies responded with the Berlin Airlift between June 1948 and September 1949, supplying the people of West Berlin with all their needs in the biggest air lift in history.
RAF Burtonwood played a central and vital role in the success of the airlift, with every C-54 Skymaster involved in the Berlin Airlift being serviced at the base.
After the war and role in the Berlin Airlift, RAF Burtonwood became a major equipment storage and supply centre for the US in Europe before its eventual closure in 1993.
The two bespoke benches now in place at Airlift Hill were designed in collaboration with Aldon Ferguson, president of the RAF Burtonwood Association, funded by Omega Warrington and were installed next to Pickett-Hamilton Fort.

Warrington Borough Council developed and published their Local Plan in 2014 based on population growth statistics at that time, these figures are now substantially out of date. 55 Councils across the UK have now abandoned their local plans as The Homes & Communities Agency confirmed that housing targets are a guide and not mandatory. Warrington Borough Councils plan includes removing large areas of Greenbelt Land all over the Borough for housing developments and business parks.
All areas will be affected
Appleton, Appleton Thorn, Stretton, Grappenhall, Thelwall, Lymm, Croft and Culcheth for housing developments. New roads will be punched through existing areas to access the new housing estates, for example through Grappenhall Sports Club across the Bridgewater Canal, affecting Stockton Heath and Stockton Lane. Another road is planned across fields at the back of Stretton towards the M56.
These areas are all currently green fields, sports fields and wildlife habitats.
All of these areas have new housing stock built in the last 10 years, surely enough Greenbelt has been lost already. There are enough brownfield sites across Warrington for thousands of houses without having to dig up Greenbelt. The Greenbelt areas are the 'Green Lungs' of Warrington, the trees and plants store carbon and clean the air we breathe. The people of Warrington are now saying 'NO' to losing any more Greenbelt. Our elected representatives need to listen to us. During Covid we all learned how important fresh air and open space is to our survival.

The oppositely arranged leaves are pinnate with 5?9 leaflets (or, rarely, 3 or 11). Each leaf is 5?30 cm (2?12 in) long, and the leaflets have serrated margins. They bear large clusters of small white or cream-colored flowers in late spring

Structure of anthocyanins, the blue pigments in elderberries
Sambucus fruit is rich in anthocyanidins[3] that combine to give elderberry juice an intense blue-purple coloration that turns reddish on dilution with water. These pigments are used as colorants in various products, and elderberry juice color is listed by the US FDA as allowable in certified organic food products. In Japan, elderberry juice is listed as an approved natural color additive under the Food and Sanitation Law. Fibers can be dyed with elderberry juice (using alum as a mordant) to give a muted purple shade.
Toxicity
Although the cooked berries (pulp and skin) of most species of Sambucus are edible, the uncooked berries and other parts of plants from this genus are poisonous. Leaves, twigs, branches, seeds, roots, flowers, and berries of Sambucus plants produce cyanogenic glycosides, which have toxic properties.[10] Ingesting a sufficient quantity of cyanogenic glycosides from berry juice, flower tea, or beverages made from fresh leaves, branches, and fruit has been shown to cause illness, including nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and weakness. The origins of a church or chapel at Thelwall are unclear. It has been thought that a chapel was built by Richard Brooke of Norton Priory but a legal suit in 1663 suggests that there was a chapel on the site before this date. At this time Thelwall was in the parish of Runcorn. In 1663 the chapel on the site was restored by Robert Pickering. After this the chapel fell into disrepair. It was restored again and re-opened in 1782. By the following century the church was too small for its congregation and in 1843 a new church was built and consecrated. This consisted of a nave which was designed by James Mountford Allen. In 1856 the chancel was built at the expense of James Nicholson and the nave was extended by one bay. In 1890 Henry Stanton commissioned a new north aisle, a new baptistry with a new font, and a new vestry. The aisle and vestry, together with a north porch, were designed by William Owen.
The church is built in sandstone with steeply pitched slate roofs. Its plan consists of a nave of six bays, a chancel of two bays, a north aisle and a west porch. A west bellcote has one bell.
The chancel has a floor of marble and coloured glazed tiles. The reredos has two panels of Biblical scenes in marble which are separated by plaster angels. In the church is a memorial to Edward the Elder who founded Thelwall in 923. This is dated 1907 and is by Eric Gill. The frame of the memorial is by F. C. Eden and Helfar Bros. From around 1884 the organ used had been built by Gray and Davidson, and in 1964 it was rebuilt by Jardine

Following the old rail line from Thelwall via Lymm, Heatley to Altrincham (approx 7 miles). There is a Ranger Service Information Centre in Lymm and the National Trust's Dunham Massey property is just off this section of the Trail.
Access: There is parking at the Ranger Cabin (on the site of the former station) in Lymm ? follow the signs for the Trail from the A56 and A6144 in Lymm. There is also a car park on Black Moss Road at the eastern end of this section. From junction 7 of the M60 follow the A 56 to Altrincham, after going under the railway bridge turn 3rd right into Atlantic Street. Follow this to the end and the car park is opposite.
Facilities: There are a number of pubs along the route and local facilities in Lymm. There are toilets at the Ranger Cabin in Lymm (Tel 01925 758195 to check opening times).

In addition to enjoying their garden, the Parr family held frequent galas and special events for the community. One annual event called Beating the Bounds involved a walk around the boundaries of the townships of Lymm, Appleton, and Grappenhall, which included the garden. Historical records suggest that the estate was at its height from 1875 to 1899.
By the 1950s, the estate had become derelict and parts of it were sold off. The house was demolished in the 1970s and the garden passed to English Partnerships for renovation. In 2005 control of the garden passed to Grappenhall and Thelwall Parish Council, which continued restoration in conjunction with a community group called The Friends of Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden. Etymology
The name 'Moore' comes from the Old English word mor, meaning 'moor, or fen'. The village's earliest recording was as Mora, some time in the 12th century.
History
Moore is the site of a disused railway station named Daresbury. The railway station was opened in 1850 and was located on the south side of Runcorn Road. The station was closed to passengers in 1952 and closed completely in 1965. The platforms and ramps down from road are still visible from Runcorn Road. The railway station was situated on the Birkenhead Joint Railway close to Warrington and in the village of Moore. The railway station was the second to open in the village. The first railway station which was very close by was part of the Grand Junction Railway which opened on 4 July 1837. Moore was a second class station at which a First Class train would not stop. The engineer for the northern half of the new railway was Joseph Locke who became a famous as a railway engineer. The date of closure of Moore railway station is uncertain. Daresbury railway station was initially called Moore but the name was changed to Daresbury in April 1861 taking its name from a village a mile or so away.
The area of Moore to the north of the West Coast Main Line and west of Moss Lane was designated as part of Runcorn New Town in 1964 and the land allocated to industry. The New Town Masterplan was amended in 1975 to reduce the amount of industrial land around the village and to create a green buffer between it and what would become Manor Park Industrial Estate

It was built as a private estate church towards the end of the 19th century but is now an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building.
History
The church was built in 1882?83 for the brewer Sir Gilbert Greenall of Walton Hall. It was designed by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin, the cost of its construction being ?17,500 (equivalent to ?1,880,000 in 2021).
Exterior
The church is built in red snecked sandstone with Westmorland green slate roofs. Its plan is cruciform with a three-bay nave, north and south transepts, a two-bay chancel, a south vestry, and a south porch. The tower is in four stages with chequerwork in its third stage, a recessed octagonal spire and an octagonal north west stair turret. The porch consists of an oak frame on a 6 feet (2 m) sandstone plinth. The church is in Decorated style
Walton is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is located at the southwest edge of the town of Warrington, next to the parish of Stockton Heath. It is also close to Daresbury and Moore, although these are in the neighbouring borough of Halton. Walton is part of the council ward of Hatton, Stretton and Walton.
Walton is divided into Lower Walton and Higher Walton. Higher Walton is south-west of Lower Walton, and is the location of Walton Hall. The estate of Walton Hall and its surrounding gardens, previously owned by the Greenall family, was bought by Warrington Borough Council in 1941 and is now a park with a zoo and municipal golf course
Higher Walton was the site of a railway accident. On 29 June 1867 two trains collided at Walton Junction due to signal error. The collision killed eight people and injured 73

Shortly after the announcement that a consortium of Abellio, Mitsui and JR East had been awarded the West Midlands franchise, West Midlands Trains confirmed they had placed an order for 26 diesel multiple units based on CAF's Civity platform.
The first completed unit started testing at the Velim railway test circuit in December 2019.
The first vehicle arrived at Tyseley TMD in Birmingham on 17 April 2020, having travelled by ship from Cuxhaven to Hull. Revenue services using the new fleet began on 17 October 2022, on services between Shrewsbury and Birmingham

Work on a ?10 million regeneration scheme, the Chester Renaissance programme was completed in 2007. The development includes a new roof, improved customer facilities and improved access to the station. A plaque commemorating Thomas Brassey is installed on the wall opposite the booking office. Starting in 2005, the station was restored in the Chester Renaissance Project. Improvements made by Network Rail included groundworks around the east end frontage and repairs to the fa??ade's east and west wings, renewal of the roof's glazing, enhancements to the train shed and other general improvements. Improved local traffic management and access to the station was achieved by alterations to Station Square which were completed in December 2007. Architectural lighting was installed in strategic areas and a new concourse was opened by Arriva Trains Wales in October 2008. Between 2009 and 2010, improvements included a second staircase to access the island platform, structural repairs to platforms, restoration of the overbridge and work to enhance the station's frontage.
The station is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a Grade II* listed building. It is one of 22 Grade I or II* listed railway stations in England

Some of the glass roof on the second floor has been concealed as it has been covered by the construction of the third-floor extension which contained the main caf?? and Kalmora Spa.
The oldest part of the store is housed in the Grade I listed Crypt Chambers, designed by T. M. Penson incorporating Georgian, Tudor and Gothic facades. Construction was completed in 1858. The building incorporates part of the Chester Rows. On the front of the tower at Row level is a blank scroll, on the east face is a recessed panel containing the initials W. B. (for William Brown), on the west face the initials are C. B. (for Charles Brown) and on the rear face is a scroll inscribed AD 1858: Crypt Chambers. The Gothic facade frontage is built over a medieval undercroft dating from the twelfth century. The undercroft most recently contained 'The Tea Press' tea room.
Another extension to the building was completed in 1965 to link Browns to the nearby Grosvenor shopping centre. A new three-story extension was built in 2002 on the site formerly occupied by the offices of the Chester Chronicle.
It was acquired by Debenhams in 1976. Browns was the only store in the group to retain its own trading name alongside the standard 'Debenhams' branding. Debenhams entered liquidation in early 2021 and all remaining stores closed during May that year. The building is owned by British Land

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JN5MXF - Eastgate, Chester is a permanently open gate through the Chester city walls, on the site of the original entrance to the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix in Chester, Cheshire, England. It is a prominent landmark in the city of Chester and the Eastgate clock on top of it is said to be the most photographed clock in England after Big Ben.
The original gate was guarded by a timber tower which was replaced by a stone tower in the 2nd century, and this in turn was replaced probably in the 14th century. The present gateway dates from 1768 and is a three-arched sandstone structure which carries the walkway forming part of Chester city walls. In 1899 a clock was added to the top of the gateway to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria two years earlier. It is carried on openwork iron pylons, has a clock face on all four sides, and a copper ogee cupola. The clock was designed by the Chester architect John Douglas. The whole structure, gateway and clock, was designated as a Grade I listed building on 28 July 1955

It is an artificial island between the Sankey Canal and the estuary of the River Mersey containing parkland, woodland, wetlands and footpaths. It is next to the Catalyst Science Discovery Centre, an interactive science and technology museum.
Spike Island was at the centre of the British chemical industry during the industrial revolution. In 1833, Widnes Dock, the world's first rail-to-ship dock, was built on the island. In 1848, John Hutchinson built the first chemical factory in Widnes on the island. The chemical industry in Widnes grew rapidly thereafter. By the 1970s no working chemical factories remained, and from 1975 onwards the island was cleaned up and turned over to public recreation.
A famous concert by The Stone Roses, subsequently the subject of an eponymous film, took place on the island in May 1990.

Spike Island is an artificial island created in 1833 when the Sankey Canal was extended from Fiddler's Ferry to the River Mersey at Widnes. The extension separated a section of Widnes previously called Woodend from the remainder of the town.[1] The canal passes from the West Bank Locks on Spike Island to Warrington and then into St. Helens town centre. The canal fell into disuse and closed in 1963. The canal footpath now forms part of the Trans Pennine Trail.
Widnes Dock, built in 1833, was the first rail-to-ship dock in the world. Uniquely the dock allowed goods, such as coal, to be taken off a train and deposited directly into a boat for transport along the River Mersey to other parts of the UK and abroad. Goods and raw materials could also be brought in by boat and deposited directly onto a train for onward travel to local factories. The dock was topped up with water from the nearby reservoir to prevent its level becoming too low when the River Mersey was at low tide.

It is a through arch bridge with a main arch span of 361 yards (330 m). It was opened in 1961 as a replacement for the Widnes-Runcorn Transporter Bridge. In 1975?77 the carriageway was widened, after which the bridge was given its official name in honour of the Queen's Silver Jubilee. It carries the A533 road and a cantilevered footway.
design was for a steel through arch bridge with a 10-yard (9 m) single carriageway. The design of the bridge is similar to that of Sydney Harbour Bridge but differs from it in that the side spans are continuous with the main span rather than being separate from them. This design feature was necessary to avoid the problem of oscillation due to the railway bridge. The main span measures 361 yards (330 m) and each side span is 83 yards (76 m)
Construction began on 25 April 1956. The contractors for the first phase of work, Leonard Fairclough of Adlington, cleared the ground and constructed the foundations for the piers. The contract for the second phase, the building of the main arch and the side arches, was given to Dorman Long of Middlesbrough who sub-contracted the building of the bridge deck, viaduct and roadworks to Leonard Fairclough. The carriageway was suspended from the arch by 48 lock-coil wire ropes.

In the late eighties and early 90s, before soft play centres were everywhere, IKEA endeared itself to kids with a ball pit at the front of the store - and the chance to sit on every chair and lie on every bed before a trip to the cafe
And there's still no better way to end a hard day's shopping than with a steaming plate of Swedish meatballs, chips, peas, sauce, and lots of lingonberry jam

The cross dates from the early to mid-17th century and was restored in 1897. It is constructed of sandstone and stands on an artificially stepped natural outcrop of red sandstone. Its shaft stands in a square pavilion of red sandstone with square corner pillars. It has a stone roof with a pedimented gable to each face and ball finials. Above the cross is an extension which carries a stone ball and an ornate weather vane. On the east, south and west gables are bronze sundials of 1897 carrying the inscriptions We are a Shadow, Save Time and Think of the Last.

The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Liverpool, the archdeaconry of Warrington and the deanery of Winwick.
History
A church at Winwick is recorded in the Domesday Book. The earliest parts of the present church are the bases of the north arcade which date from the early 13th century, and the walls of the Legh Chapel and the organ chamber which are dated 1330. The west tower was built in 1358, and the walls and north arcade of the nave (except for the Legh Chapel and the organ chamber) date from 1580. Much damage was done to the church in 1648 when Oliver Cromwell stationed his troops in the church after the Battle of Red Bank. The south porch was added in 1720, and the south arcade of the nave was rebuilt in 1836 reusing earlier stones. The chancel, sanctuary and vestry were rebuilt by Pugin in 1847?49 for the 13th Earl of Derby. The spire was rebuilt and the church was restored in 1869 by the Lancaster partnership of Paley and Austin. On Thursday 13 January 1887, Titanic Captain Edward Smith married Sarah Eleanor Pennington in the church. In 1931?32 Henry Paley successor in the Lancaster architectural practice, now known as Austin and Paley, restored the tower at a cost of ?463, and in 1934 he added a new vestry, porch and entrance at a cost of ?232
The church is built of sandstone with a metal, stainless steel, roof. Its plan consists of a west tower, a nave of six bays with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a south porch, a chapel in the east bay of each aisle, a chancel and sanctuary of three bays, and a north vestry. The south chapel is the Legh Chapel and the north chapel belonged to the Gerard family. The tower is in three stages and has a recessed spire. On the west face is a door above which is a three-light window.

In 2010, the station was being considered for the installation of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) equipment. This would reduce the station's emissions of nitrogen oxides, to meet the requirements of the Industrial Emissions (Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control) Directive. The SCR technology would replace the Separated Over Fire Air (SOFA) technology which was used in the station. The SCR equipment was not fitted due to uncertainty over the future of the plant.

We've all enjoyed the pubs reopening this month. Whether you went out, or you stayed at home and decided to see what happens, it's nice to see a little bit of normality getting back into society ? although, it does seem like this is the calm before the storm.
The biggest question now? Whether our beloved locals can survive through this turbulent time, which is expected to see people spending much less now that jobs are being axed and workers continue to live off the furlough scheme.
One brewery that has felt the pull is Yorkshire's oldest, Sam Smith. Founded in 1758, Sam Smith's pubs are the most traditional pubs you'll find in England. They like to stick to traditions such as no phone, swearing and a big push on a social and fun time that pubs have always been focused on.
One of their biggest pushes, and one that Yorkshire folk have always enjoyed, is the fact that they've managed to keep the price of a pint as one of the cheapest in the country ? without skimping on quality.
But even they've struggled post-lockdown, and have announced that they'll be hiking up the prices of some of their favourite beers by as much as ?1. Taddy Lager will rise from ?2.30 to ?3.40 and their Soveriegn Bitter price will go from ?2.04 to ?3.04. You can hear the Yorkshireman's cry already ?Hooow muuchh?'.
Reports from The Sun show a Sam Smith's landlord saying: It's a heck of a price hike ? I don't know how I'm going to explain it to the customers. It's not going to make reopening after the lockdown any easier. The report also shows that Sam Smith pubs won't be the only ones implementing price changes, with Wetherspoons pubs set to be making the change too.

We've all enjoyed the pubs reopening this month. Whether you went out, or you stayed at home and decided to see what happens, it's nice to see a little bit of normality getting back into society ? although, it does seem like this is the calm before the storm.
The biggest question now? Whether our beloved locals can survive through this turbulent time, which is expected to see people spending much less now that jobs are being axed and workers continue to live off the furlough scheme.
One brewery that has felt the pull is Yorkshire's oldest, Sam Smith. Founded in 1758, Sam Smith's pubs are the most traditional pubs you'll find in England. They like to stick to traditions such as no phone, swearing and a big push on a social and fun time that pubs have always been focused on.
One of their biggest pushes, and one that Yorkshire folk have always enjoyed, is the fact that they've managed to keep the price of a pint as one of the cheapest in the country ? without skimping on quality.
But even they've struggled post-lockdown, and have announced that they'll be hiking up the prices of some of their favourite beers by as much as ?1. Taddy Lager will rise from ?2.30 to ?3.40 and their Soveriegn Bitter price will go from ?2.04 to ?3.04. You can hear the Yorkshireman's cry already ?Hooow muuchh?'.
Reports from The Sun show a Sam Smith's landlord saying: It's a heck of a price hike ? I don't know how I'm going to explain it to the customers. It's not going to make reopening after the lockdown any easier. The report also shows that Sam Smith pubs won't be the only ones implementing price changes, with Wetherspoons pubs set to be making the change too.

Appleton Thorn village is the only village in England where the 'Bawming the Thorn' ceremony takes place. This ceremony take place on the 3rd Saturday of June every year. The thorn tree, which stands beside the church, is believed to be an offshoot of the Glastonbury thorn, which grew from the staff of Joseph of Arimathea. Adam de Dutton, a knight of the Crusades and local landowner, brought it to Appleton. Bawming, which means, decorating the the tree with flowers and ribbons, takes place whilst local children (our 6 class) dance and sing the Bawming song.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H542X8 - Starting with a small grocery business begun by his father, William Lever and his brother James entered the soap business in 1885 by buying a small soap works in Warrington.
The brothers teamed up with a Bolton chemist, William Hough Watson, who became an early business partner. Watson invented the process which resulted in a new soap, using glycerin and vegetable oils such as palm oil, rather than tallow.
The resulting soap was a good, free-lathering soap, at first named Honey Soap then later named Sunlight Soap. Production reached 450 tons per week by 1888. Larger premises were built on marshes at Bromborough Pool on the Wirral Peninsula at what became Port Sunlight.
Though the company was named Lever Brothers, William Lever's brother and co-director James never took a major part in running the business. He fell ill in 1895, probably as a result of diabetes, and resigned his directorship two years later

Parts of the Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes were filmed in the centre of Grappenhall. The village name appears in the title of the song Grappenhall Rag, by the Darwen singer-songwriter Bryn Haworth.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYJ18 - Grappenhall Cricket Club played its first game in 1881 on a ground in Bellhouse Lane. The club moved to its current home of Broad Lane in 1892 with a new clubhouse. There have been several new clubhouses built on the existing site with the most recent developments coming in the late 1980's with significant improvements to the facilities in 2011.
In the early days the club played a number of friendly matches. Grappers then played regular fixtures up to the 2nd World War. In 1939, before war broke out, Grappers were founder members of the North Cheshire League but the league was stopped at the start of the war and was never resumed. From the 1960's onwards GCC were members of the Manchester Association which was the prelude to the clubs most successful period.
The 70's & 80's ? the golden years
In 1981, after a couple of good seasons following promotion to the top division in the late 70's, the 1st XI won the top flight for the first time. One of Grappenhall's best teams, it included some famous Grappers names such as Duncan Martindale, Rick Houghton, Chris Ashton, Neil Titchard, Jim Green, Nick Sharp and a young Neil Fairbrother, only a few years before he headed off for big things with Lancashire and England.

for the Azure Damselfly it is the other way around. The second segment of the thorax has a distinctive spot with a line below connecting to the third segment.
Another difference can be observed when inspecting the side of the thorax. The Common Blue Damselfly has only one small black stripe there, while all other blue damselflies have two.
During mating, the male clasps the female by her neck while she bends her body around to his reproductive organs ? this is called a mating wheel. The pair flies together over the water and eggs are laid within a suitable plant, just below the surface.
The eggs hatch and the larvae, called nymphs, live in the water and feed on small aquatic animals. Nymphs climb out of the water up a suitable stem to moult into damselflies.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4662183553 - 'Often the premise of the back of working mens clubs in Britain (and many other countries), Bowls is a game in which the goal is to roll slightly asymmetric balls, called bowls, so that they stop close to a smaller\u2014normally white\u2014bowl called the 'jack' or 'kitty'. It is related to french boules and goes back to the 13th century. These days in pubs across the land, ex-sunday league pub footballers, quite often go out to grass on the crown green.
Bowls, can be either flat- or crown-green, is usually played outdoors, tradionally on grass and synthetic surfaces. To escape british winter, flat-green bowls can also be played indoors on synthetic surfaces. When national and international matches are televised, this is usually the surface used. Around \u00a3100,000 in prizes are available in annual competition and has been watched by up to 3 million viewers on the BBC.
The world's oldest surviving bowling green is said to be the Southampton Old Bowling Green, which was first used in 1299. The worlds longest surviving bowler may be much older, maybe the sport keeps them young (!).
Bowling has a colourful history and was banned in the time of Richard II, when it was thought it may deminsh archery, important for battle. By a further act of 1541 - which was not repealed until 1845 - artificers, labourers, apprentices, servants and the like were forbidden to play bowls at any time except Christmas, and then only in their master's house and presence. It was further enjoined that any one playing bowls outside his own garden or orchard was liable to a penalty of 6s. 8d., while those possessed of lands of the yearly value of \u00a3100 might obtain licences to play on their own private greens.
Many British pubs today are named 'The Bowling Green' and indeed, have a well manicured one to the rear.
In 1864 William Wallace Mitchell (1803-1884), a Glasgow Cotton Merchant, published his 'Manual of Bowls Playing' following his work as the secretary formed in 1849 by Scottish bowling clubs which became the basis of the rules of the modern game. Young Mitchell was only 11 when he played on Kilmarnock Bowling green, the oldest club in Scotland, instituted in 1740.

It takes its name from the Greek word for a rainbow, referring to the wide variety of flower colors found among the many species. As well as being the scientific name, iris is also very widely used as a common name. A common sight in the early summer in europe.
Irises are perennial herbs, growing from creeping rhizomes (rhizomatous irises), or, in drier climates, from bulbs (bulbous irises). They have long, erect flowering stems, which may be simple or branched, solid or hollow, and flattened or have a circular cross-section.
The inflorescences are fan-shaped and contain one or more symmetrical six-lobed flowers. These grow on a pedicel or lack a footstalk. The three sepals, which are spreading or droop downwards, are referred to as 'falls'. They expand from their narrow base, which in some of the rhizomatous irises has a 'beard' (a tuft of short upright extensions growing in its midline), into a broader expanded portion ('limb'), often adorned with veining, lines or dots. The three, sometimes reduced, petals stand upright, partly behind the sepal bases. They are called 'standards'. Some smaller iris species have all six lobes pointing straight outwards, but generally, limb and standards differ markedly in appearance. They are united at their base into a floral tube that lies above the ovary (known as an inferior ovary). The styles divide towards the apex into petaloid branches

The iris fruit is a capsule which opens up in three parts to reveal the numerous seeds within. In some species, these bear an aril.
Rhizomes of the German Iris (I. germanica) and Sweet Iris (I. pallida) are traded as orris root and are used in perfume and medicine, though more common in ancient times than today. Today Iris essential oil (absolute) from flowers are sometimes used in aromatherapy as sedative medicines. The dried rhizomes are also given whole to babies to help in teething. Gin brands such as Bombay Sapphire and Magellan Gin use orris root and sometimes iris flowers for flavour and colour.
The red fleur-de-lis in the coat-of-arms of Florence (Italy) and also of the scouts, descends from the white iris which is native to Florence and which grew even in its city walls. This white iris, displayed against a red background, became the symbol of Florence until the Medici family, to signal a change in political power, reversed the colors making the white one red and setting in motion a centuries-long breeding program to hybridize a red iris.
So, often taken for granted, the Iris is actually a very interesting plant indeed!

The Warburton Toll Bridge crosses the Manchester Ship Canal on the B5159 road, connecting Warrington with Trafford. There was an old stone bridge across the now dried up bed of the diverted River Mersey from 1863, there was an original toll for this.
The toll contributes towards the maintenance of the high level bridge style metal bridge and approach road. There is a limit of 3 tons on the bridge. The last time I crossed it was 12p. I believe a 25p ticket can be taken and used all day, a bit like the Thelwall ferry www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/4337673883/ . There is also an annual pass from the MSCC.
If you cross, tolls are charged from 7am till 10pm Monday to Friday, from 8am Saturday and 9am on a Sunday. At 10pm until the following morning there is no charge to cross. Apparently its one of the few remaining pre-motorway toll bridges in the UK and the only one in Greater Manchester. So a little bit of history.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEMX6P - Grappenhall is a suburban village in Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is situated along the Bridgewater Canal, and forms one of the principal settlements of Grappenhall and Thelwall civil parish. According to the 2001 UK census, the population of the entire civil parish was 9,377.[1]
Grappenhall is mentioned in the Domesday Book with the name Gropenhale and a with a valuation of five shillings.
St Wilfrid's Church has a carving of a cat on the west face of the tower, just beyond this location. This is believed to be Lewis Carroll's inspiration for the grinning Cheshire Cat in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The church itself was first constructed in 1120, though was rebuilt 400 years later. The church was also, at a time, in the possession of the Boidelle (Boydell) family.
Along with the church, the centre of the village contains two pubs - The Parr Arms and The Ram's Head, Grappenhall Hall residential School and St. Wilfrids Primary School. Bradshaw Community Primary School is located north of the village centre.
Parts of the Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes were filmed in the centre of Grappenhall. It is also the birthplace of actor Tim Curry. The village name appears in the title of the song Grappenhall Rag by Darwen singer/songwriter Bryn Haworth.

Creamfields was held in this field earlier this year and possibly the churn of feet has disturbed lots of wild flower seeds. The result is the wheat battling it out with a carpet of blooms.
The polariser brought out the sky, later the afternoon the grey clouds and rain tracked in. A colourfull landscape of wild flowers fighting the planted agricultural barley crop.

The garden was built by Thomas Parr around 1830 as both a pleasure garden for relaxing strolls and as a kitchen garden to produce fruit, vegetables, and herbs. After a period of decline, the garden was restored first by English Partnerships and then by the local parish council in conjunction with the friends of the garden
The walled garden was built around 1830 by Warrington banker Thomas Parr to accompany a mansion house. Thomas Parr's father, Joseph Parr, founded Parr's Bank and Thomas was appointed Chairman of the bank. Before opening the bank, Joseph Parr had made his wealth in the sugar refining industry that supported the slave trade in the British West Indies. Parr's bank amalgamated through acquisitions into the NatWest.
Unusually, Parr included both a pleasure garden and a kitchen garden within the same boundary wall. In addition to enjoying their garden, the Parr family held frequent galas and special events for the community. One annual event called Beating the Bounds involved a walk around the boundaries of the townships of Lymm, Appleton, and Grappenhall, which included the garden. Historical records suggest that the estate was at its height from 1875 to 1899.
By the 1950s, the estate had become derelict and parts of it were sold off. The house was demolished in the 1970s and the garden passed to English Partnerships for renovation. In 2005 control of the garden passed to Grappenhall and Thelwall Parish Council, which continued restoration in conjunction with a community group called The Friends of Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden. In 2012 the garden was given a Heritage Lottery Fund award towards repair of the Victorian glasshouses and completion of the restoration

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNN55B - St Mary's Church is an Anglican parish church in Nantwich, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. It has been called the Cathedral of South Cheshire and it is considered by some to be one of the finest medieval churches, not only in Cheshire, but in the whole of England. The architectural writer Raymond Richards described it as one of the great architectural treasures of Cheshire, and Alec Clifton-Taylor included it in his list of outstanding English parish churches.
The building dates from the 14th century, although a number of changes have since been made, particularly a substantial 19th-century restoration by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The church and its octagonal tower are built in red sandstone. Features of the church's interior include the lierne-vaulted ceiling of the choir, the carved stone canopies of the sedilia in the chancel, and the intricately carved wooden canopies over the choirstalls together with the 20 misericords at the back of the stalls. The church is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Macclesfield and the deanery of Nantwich
The last major work to be carried out on the church was in 1878, under the direction of local architect Thomas Bower, when the south porch was restored at a cost of ?900.
The church is built in red sandstone and is cruciform in shape. Its plan consists of a four-bay nave with north and south aisles, a south porch with two storeys, a central tower, north and south transepts, and a three-bay chancel, to the north of which is a two-storey treasury. The tower is square below and octagonal above. Both transepts are of three bays and the northernmost bay of the north transept was formerly a Lady chapel. The other two bays were dedicated to Saint George. The south transept was known as the Kingsley Chapel

History
The name Lymm, of Celtic origins, means a place of running water and is likely derived from an ancient stream that ran through the village centre. The village appears as Limme in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Lymm was an agricultural village until the Industrial Revolution, which brought the Bridgewater Canal and the Warrington and Altrincham Junction Railway to the village. The village played a prominent role within the salt extraction industry, gold beating industry and cotton industry (many of its inhabitants were fustian cutters).
Lymm Heritage Centre, which opened in June 2017, is in the centre of the village on Legh Street. It hosts exhibitions related to local history as well as activities for schools and visitors.
Morris dancing was taking place in Lymm as early as 1817, often appearing in the village at Rushbearing time throughout the Victorian era. Morris dancing[7] continues to feature within the village with Lymm Morris dancers frequently performing during Rushbearing[8] and at the various annual village festivals including the Lymm May Queen Festival, Lymm Festival and Lymm Dickensian Festival.
In 2017, Lymm was voted as one of the 'Best Places to Live' according to The Times and The Sunday Times list. In 2023, the village was voted as one of Britains 'Most Desirable Towns' according to The Daily Telegraph

Each June, the village hosts the ceremony of Bawming the Thorn. The current form of the ceremony dates from the Nineteenth century, when it was part of the village's walking day. It involved children from Appleton Thorn Primary School walking through the village and holding sports and games at the school. This now takes place at the Village Hall. The ceremony stopped in the 1930s, but was later revived by the then headmaster, Mr. Bob Jones in the early 1970s. Bawming the Thorn occurs on the Saturday nearest to Midsummer's Day. Local schoolchildren dance around the tree.
Bawming means decorating - during the ceremony the thorn tree is decorated with ribbons and garlands. According to legend, the hawthorn at Appleton Thorn grew from a cutting of the Holy Thorn at Glastonbury, which was itself said to have sprung from the staff of Joseph of Arimathea, the man who arranged for Jesus's burial after the Crucifixion.
