Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E4248M - The Blue Bell pub is pictured at dusk on Horsemarket Street in Warrington town centre, with warm exterior lanterns glowing against the brick façade and the traditional pub frontage standing out as the evening economy begins. The image is a useful editorial stock photograph for stories about pubs, hospitality, restaurants, bars, evening trade, town centre footfall and the wider night-time economy in Warrington. The Food Standards Agency lists The Blue Bell at 27 Horsemarket Street, Warrington, WA1 1TS, while other listings describe it as a traditional pub and restaurant in the heart of the town centre. The photograph is commercially useful for features on local pubs, leisure spending, hospitality jobs, licensed premises, cask ale culture, food-led pubs, high street resilience and the role of independent-looking venues in keeping town centres active after office and shopping hours. It can also illustrate debate about the pressures facing the hospitality sector, including energy bills, labour costs, food inflation, business rates and changes in consumer habits. The warm indoor light visible through the sash windows, the open doorway, the hanging lanterns and the darkening sky give the scene a welcoming mood that suits coverage of traditional British pub culture, evening dining and social life. The image may also be used for stories about town centre regeneration, destination dining, pre-event drinking, local meeting places and the social value of pubs as informal community spaces. Because the image shows the exterior only, it is especially good for general editorial use where a recognisable pub frontage is needed without focusing on drink brands or close-up customers. As a documentary image, it records a familiar part of Warrington's social landscape, linking historic-looking pub architecture with the practical reality of town centre night-time economy and the continuing importance of pubs as social spaces, eating venues and contributors to local identity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T3EFTC - Greenall's Brewery was founded by Thomas Greenall in 1762. Initially based in St Helens, the company established a second brewery at Wilderspool, south of Warrington in 1787.
It bought the Groves & Whitnall Brewery in Salford in 1961, Shipstone's Brewery in Nottingham in 1978[4] and Davenport's Brewery in Birmingham in 1986. For much of the 20th century, the company traded as Greenall Whitley & Co Limited. The St Helens brewery was demolished in the 1970s to make way for a new shopping centre. The Warrington brewery on the edge of Stockton Heath was bought by Bruntwood, renamed Wilderspool Business Park and is now let to office occupiers.
The company ceased brewing in 1991 to concentrate on running pubs and hotels.
In 1999, the tenanted wing of the Greenall's operation was sold to the Japanese bank, Nomura for £370 million and the main Greenall's operation, involving 770 pubs and 69 budget lodges, was sold to Scottish and Newcastle for £1.1billion. Greenalls started to focus its resources on its De Vere and Village Leisure hotel branding at that time.
In February 2005, Greenalls sold The Belfry to The Quinn Group for £186 million.
The Greenall family connection remained as Lord Daresbury, the descendant of the original founder, remained the non-executive chairman. This tie was severed in 2006 when Daresbury stepped down from the post and much of the family's interest was sold

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP38P - The White Bear public house, located on Canute Place in Knutsford, Cheshire, is shown here in daylight with its distinctive black-and-white half-timbered facade and thatched roof. The building is a long-established local landmark in this historic Cheshire market town, reflecting traditional English inn architecture and pub culture.
Flower baskets and planted borders add seasonal colour to the frontage, reinforcing the pub's role as a welcoming focal point within the town centre. Knutsford is well known for its historic streetscape, independent businesses, and proximity to rural Cheshire countryside, and the White Bear remains a recognisable symbol of British hospitality and heritage pub design.
This image is suitable for editorial use covering UK pubs, traditional architecture, market towns, tourism, food and drink culture, and historic buildings in England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNGX - This image shows the exterior of the Three Pigeons, a traditional public house located at 35 Tanners Lane in Warrington, Cheshire (postcode WA2 7NL). The building occupies a prominent street-corner position and features a red-brick upper storey with a white-painted ground floor and black architectural detailing around the windows and entrances.
Pubs such as the Three Pigeons form part of the historic fabric of English towns, serving as long-established social spaces within residential neighbourhoods. The architectural style reflects a practical late 19th or early 20th century pub design, intended to be both visible and accessible within a mixed urban streetscape.
The signage and façade identify the building clearly as a licensed premises, while the surrounding street context places it within a typical Warrington setting, close to housing and local services. The image documents the pub as a physical landmark within the community, regardless of changes in the wider hospitality sector.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited to editorial use covering British pub culture, neighbourhood life, historic public houses, urban architecture, and the role of pubs within towns such as Warrington.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PK2AXB - St Elphin's Church is the parish church of the town of Warrington, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Liverpool, the archdeaconry of Warrington and the deanery of Warrington.
A place of worship has been present on the site since about 650 AD, and the presence of a priest in Warrington was recorded in the Domesday Book. According to tradition the first church was built by Saint Oswald for his companion Elphin, who remained as the first priest there until his death in 679. The earliest fabric in the present church is in the chancel and the crypt, which survive from the church built in 1354 by Sir William Boteler. The church was badly damaged by the Parliamentary forces in the Civil War. Following this the tower was rebuilt in 1696 and the nave in 1770. The south aisle was added in the early 19th century. Most of the fabric of the present church is the result of an extensive restoration between 1859 and 1867 by Frederick and Horace Francis. It was during this restoration that the spire was added. The bells were recast in 1698 and again in 1884. In 1950 they were recast again and the clock was replaced
Within the church, St Ann's Chapel was founded by Thomas Massey, rector of Warrington from 1448 to 1464.
It continued to belong to the Massey family until they died out in 1748. The chapel was then acquired by the Patten family who built a vault to bury members of the family, the last being Lord Winmarleigh in 1892. The Lady Chapel was founded and endowed by Sir John Boteler in 1290. He and other family members were buried in the chapel. In 1943 it became the chapel of the South Lancashire Regiment and in 1976 the chapel of the Queen's Lancashire Regiment.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJW6YW - Grappenhall is a suburb of Warrington, Cheshire, in the civil parish of Grappenhall and Thelwall, which had a population of 9,377 at the 2001 census. At the 2021 census the population of the parish was 9,651.
Grappenhall is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 with the name Gropenhale and with a valuation of five shillings.
Sandstone carving of a 'Cheshire Cat', St Wilfrid's Church, Grappenhall
St Wilfrid's Church has a carving of a cat on the west face of the tower. This may have been Lewis Carroll's inspiration for the grinning Cheshire Cat in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The church itself was first constructed in 1120, though was rebuilt 400 years later. The church was also, at a time, in the possession of the Boidelle (Boydell) family.
Along with the church, the centre of the village contains two pubs, the Parr Arms and the Ram's Head, and Grappenhall Hall Residential School (closed down) and St Wilfrid's Primary School. Bradshaw Community Primary School is located north of the village centre.

Probably 17th-century - suggested by the date 1685 in a gable - this much restored inn is worth a visit to see two small rooms of real character. Behind the servery an old latch door leads into a small snug with two good baffles/screens by the entrance with colourful pictorial stained and leaded panels at the top, early 20th-century fixed seating and bell pushes around most of the room but, sadly, a modern brick fireplace. Down a short passageway on the rear right a sliding door leads into the small Trophy Room with Victorian fixed seating with carved arms / bench ends and bell pushes all around the room but, again, another modern brick fireplace. The front of the pub is three rooms opened up and modernised but the bar counter may be old with a modern frontage of carved panels added and an area on the front right does retain old fixed seating and bell pushes. Active bowling green at rear owned by the pub and a modern function room is used by a folk club (Sunday evenings).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JP5RXB - Lymm is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Warrington, Cheshire, England, which incorporates the hamlets of Booths Hill, Broomedge, Church Green, Deansgreen, Heatley, Heatley Heath, Little Heatley, Oughtrington, Reddish, Rushgreen and Statham. At the 2021 United Kingdom census it had a population of 12,700.
History
The name Lymm, of Celtic origins, means a place of running water and is likely derived from an ancient stream that ran through the village centre. The village appears as Limme in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Lymm was an agricultural village until the Industrial Revolution, which brought the Bridgewater Canal and the Warrington and Altrincham Junction Railway to the village. The village played a prominent role within the salt extraction industry, gold beating industry and cotton industry (many of its inhabitants were fustian cutters).
Lymm Heritage Centre, which opened in June 2017, is in the centre of the village on Legh Street. It hosts exhibitions related to local history as well as activities for schools and visitors.
Morris dancing was taking place in Lymm as early as 1817, often appearing in the village at Rushbearing time throughout the Victorian era. Morris dancing[7] continues to feature within the village with Lymm Morris dancers frequently performing during Rushbearing[8] and at the various annual village festivals including the Lymm May Queen Festival, Lymm Festival and Lymm Dickensian Festival.
In 2017, Lymm was voted as one of the 'Best Places to Live' according to The Times and The Sunday Times list. In 2023, the village was voted as one of Britains 'Most Desirable Towns' according to The Daily Telegraph

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JN1FP3 - Albion, translated to present-day terms, means white' and is often associated with all things English. The present day ambience of the Albion's interior reflects this translation and has firm connections with the Great War going far beyond the modern concept' pub of today.
Mike Mercer has run the Albion Inn for over 37 years and has created and captured the essence of the Great War 1914-18 in this last remaining classic Victorian corner street pub within the City Walls of Chester.
Albion Street, and the adjoining Volunteer Street both lead to the former Drill Hall, which was a recruiting centre during the First World War.
Many a young lad would have spent his King's Shilling in the bar of the Albion before going to face the horrors of the Western Front.
The Albion Inn dates from the late 1880's and Mike and Christina have managed to retain the traditional three room layout covering Vault, Snug and Lounge, containing Great War artefacts and pictures, which give a distinct period feel, together with posters and enamelled advertising signs.
At the same time, The Albion provides high standards of food, drink and accommodation, worthy of its entry in many National and International Guides and Publications.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3T3FJ - Slug and Lettuce is a chain of bars that operate in the United Kingdom, with a large number located in London and South East England. As of 2017, there are a total of 70 outlets. Hugh Corbett opened the first Slug and Lettuce in Islington in 1985. He attempted to enhance the public house environment, at a time when standards were often low.
The bars are designed for a youthful clientele, and aim to attract an equal number of men and women with female-friendly designs. The chain has remained relevant by continually re-inventing itself for the contemporary marketplace. The chain has gone through a number of owners throughout its history, and is currently owned by the Stonegate Pub Company, based in Luton, Bedfordshire.
History
Hugh Corbett, an entrepreneur with a background in the hotel industry, opened The Slug and Lettuce pub on Islington Green, North London in 1985. At the time, Islington was becoming increasingly gentrified due to its proximity to the City of London financial district. Corbett owned a small number of pubs, which he rechristened with humorous or nonsensical names, with the effect of differentiating them from competitors. His pubs had the then notable differential of stripped out carpets and enlarged windows so that people could see inside from the street.[12] Corbett listed his business in 1989 as Fast Forward, by which time it was a nine-strong chain. In 1990 Roger Protz identified the group as an imitation of David Bruce's Firkin chain pubs

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2CB00AE - Yorkshire Cheapest Pint To Rise By A Quid Now Lockdown Is Over
We've all enjoyed the pubs reopening this month. Whether you went out, or you stayed at home and decided to see what happens, it's nice to see a little bit of normality getting back into society although, it does seem like this is the calm before the storm.
The biggest question now? Whether our beloved locals can survive through this turbulent time, which is expected to see people spending much less now that jobs are being axed and workers continue to live off the furlough scheme.
One brewery that has felt the pull is Yorkshire's oldest, Sam Smith. Founded in 1758, Sam Smith's pubs are the most traditional pubs you'll find in England. They like to stick to traditions such as no phone, swearing and a big push on a social and fun time that pubs have always been focused on.
One of their biggest pushes, and one that Yorkshire folk have always enjoyed, is the fact that they've managed to keep the price of a pint as one of the cheapest in the country without skimping on quality.
But even they've struggled post-lockdown, and have announced that they'll be hiking up the prices of some of their favourite beers by as much as £1. Taddy Lager will rise from £2.30 to £3.40 and their Soveriegn Bitter price will go from £2.04 to £3.04. You can hear the Yorkshireman's cry already Hooow muuchh?'.
Reports from The Sun show a Sam Smith's landlord saying: It's a heck of a price hike I don't know how I'm going to explain it to the customers. It's not going to make reopening after the lockdown any easier. The report also shows that Sam Smith pubs won't be the only ones implementing price changes, with Wetherspoons pubs set to be making the change too.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2CB00DX - Maintaining records of staff, customers and visitors to support NHS Test and Trace
Organisations in certain sectors should collect details and maintain records of staff, customers and visitors on their premises to support NHS Test and Trace.
The UK is currently experiencing a public health emergency as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. It is therefore critical that organisations take a range of measures to keep everyone safe.
The easing of social and economic lockdown measures following the COVID-19 outbreak is being supported by NHS Test and Trace. You should assist this service by keeping a temporary record of your customers and visitors for 21 days, in a way that is manageable for your organisation, and assist NHS Test and Trace with requests for that data if needed. This could help contain clusters or outbreaks.
This publication provides further guidance on how you can do this in a proportionate and effective way.
There is a higher risk of transmitting COVID-19 in premises where customers and visitors spend a longer time in one place and potentially come into close contact with other people outside of their household. To manage this risk, establishments in the following sectors, whether indoor or outdoor venues or mobile settings, should collect details and maintain records of staff, customers and visitors:
hospitality, including pubs, bars, restaurants and cafés
tourism and leisure, including hotels, museums, cinemas, zoos and theme parks
close contact services, including hairdressers, barbershops and tailors
facilities provided by local authorities, including town halls and civic centres for events, community centres, libraries and children's centres
places of worship, including use for events and other community activities

The Patten Arms facing Warrington Bank Quay Station. In the early 16th century the Patten family purchased the entire Winmarleigh estate. The family was noted for their contribution to the development of Warrington and also for making the River Mersey more navigable, Thomas Patten did this in order to ship copper ore to his works at Bank Quay and for establishing vital transport connections to promote other trade in the area. It was Patten's son, also called Thomas, who built nearby Bank Hall (now the Town Hall) in 1750.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ABJGE2 - The existing building was built in 1893, and is listed as being of architectural and historical importance to the village. There has been an inn or hotel on the same site for much longer and the village of Grappenhall itself is recorded as far back as the Domesday Book of 1086. The image of a grinning cat carved into the tower on St. Wilfrids Church is believed to be the inspiration for Lewis Carolls Cheshire cat in Alices Adventures in Wonderland. One of the many unique features of The Rams Head Inn is the original village well, situated near the bar. The well actually pre-dates the existing building at about 150 years old, but is now fitted with walkover glass and illuminated from the inside. A large outside eating and drinking patio is located behind the pub next to the large car park. Boasting five hand pumps with three permanent ales and two guests at busy times from the Priory Inns range. Quiz night Sunday.

In 1859, Frederic Robinson took over from George and bought a warehouse to the rear of the inn to expand brewing capacity. As a result, Robinsons ale became available at pubs around the Stockport area. To control the quality of ale sold, Frederic began to purchase public houses. From 1878 until his death in 1890, Frederic established twelve pubs which exclusively served his ale. This was the beginning of what was to become an estate of over 300 pubs across the North West of England and North Wales.
The Unicorn Brewery still rests on the foundations of the public house on Lower Hillgate in Stockport.
The brewery continues to be run by the fifth and sixth generations of the Robinson family. The company took over Hartley's Brewery in Ulverston in 1982, closing it and transferring the brewing of Hartley's beers to Stockport in 1991. Robinsons have acquired a number of other breweries over the years, including John Heginbotham, Stalybridge (1915)

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AGP32P - The Partridge opened its doors in May 2017 following an extensive refurbishment to develop an authentic country pub, complete with 10 beautiful en-suite bedrooms. Nestled in the countryside, yet adjacent to junction 10 of the M56 and the A49 and 3 miles from the M6, The Partridge is the ideal location for exploring Manchester, Liverpool and Chester or as a stopover on your journey from North to South, or East to West.
Originally called Walls Pit House, The Partridge dates back to 1791, borrowing its name from the man who built it, Mr Wall.
At the front of the property lay a large pit, which was caused by the excavation of puddling clay, used to line the wells. The pit, which has long since been filled in, had a variety of uses including potato washing in the summer and ice skating in the winter months.
According to the 1841 census, Walls Pit House was occupied by four unmarried siblings
George, Peter and their sisters Ann and Mary Whitley. By 1880, their nephew Charles Thomas Whitley, an architect and good university friend of Charles Darwin, was a frequent visitor of the property and an inscription by him relating to Darwin, can still be seen on one of the original oak beams in the bar.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AGP333 - The Partridge opened its doors in May 2017 following an extensive refurbishment to develop an authentic country pub, complete with 10 beautiful en-suite bedrooms.
More recently, the building was converted into a public house named The Hollow Tree before the latest chapter in the building's history saw it being transformed into a traditional inn, and renamed The Partridge, after its countryside surroundings and the birds that are regularly spotted in the local area.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RG9AER - Prosecco is an Italian white wine. Prosecco controlled designation of origin can be spumante (sparkling wine), frizzante (semi-sparkling wine), or tranquillo (still wine). It is made from Glera grapes, formerly known also as Prosecco, but other grape varieties may be included. The following varieties are traditionally used with Glera up to a maximum of 15 per cent of the total: Verdiso, Bianchetta Trevigiana, Perera, Glera lunga, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Noir. The name Prosecco is derived from the Italian village of Prosecco near Trieste, where the grape and wine originated.
Prosecco DOC is produced in nine provinces spanning the Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia regions. Prosecco Superiore DOCG comes in two varieties: Prosecco Conegliano Valdobbiadene Superiore DOCG, which can only be made in the Treviso province of Veneto on the hills between the towns of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene (north of Treviso), and the smaller Asolo Prosecco Superiore DOCG, produced near the town of Asolo.
Prosecco is the main ingredient of the Bellini cocktail and can be a less expensive substitute of Champagne. It is also a key ingredient of venetian spritz, a popular cocktail in northern Italy.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ECW4HB - Close-up editorial image inside The Albion, a traditional real-ale pub on Park Street in Chester, showing a humorous blackboard drinks sign mocking lager culture from a cask-ale point of view. The chalked message advertises this week's lager with the deliberately crude punchline I can't believe it's not piss!!, using pub humour, beer snobbery and blunt northern wit to suggest that mass-produced lager lacks the flavour, character and authenticity of real ale. The scene captures the long-running cultural divide in British pubs between hand-pulled cask beer and colder, more industrial lager brands, with the joke implying that lager is so bland it may as well have been recycled from the toilets. The image is rich in pub atmosphere, with warm timber, traditional signage and a shallow depth of field that throws the background poster out of focus while keeping the joke board sharp. Useful themes include real ale, cask ale, CAMRA culture, pub banter, landlord humour, beer marketing, anti-lager sentiment, traditional pub interiors, humorous notices, chalkboard sign, British drinking culture, Chester pubs, Cheshire tourism, independent pubs, heritage hospitality, eccentric bar display, and consumer attitudes to taste and quality in beer. It works as a documentary photograph of pub culture, ale-house identity, and the performative rivalry between lager drinkers and cask-ale loyalists in England. The board also reflects the kind of knowingly exaggerated sarcasm often found in long-established free houses, where personality, conversation, and local character are part of the product as much as the drink itself. For picture researchers, editors and travel writers, the frame offers strong keywords around pub signs, beer jokes, UK leisure, food and drink tourism, old-school boozers, local humour, hand-written messages, and authentic Chester interiors rather than polished chain-pub branding.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYJP9 - Robert, Vasana & Jan have been creating and cooking Thai & Asian food for 17 years around the country. This is our latest venture, and by far a smaller pub.
Much more cosier and warm. Colin Crompton from the Comedians, and the Wheel Tappers & Shunters Social Club use to own our pub, and we are proud of that.
Most important to us, is to let our customers know that as well as having the Food side to the pub we will be running a locals bar as well. Having 1 guest beer in every week and we have a full range of Wines.
The food offer ranges from our secret recipe of Crispy Shredded Beef, to Tom Yam Soup and Thai Green Curry. The average price of our meals with rice is £8.00, but we always include Thai fragrant rice with our meals, we don't believe you so have to pay. It's like ordering Roast Beef and having to pay for the Yorkshire pudding.
We offer Thai, Chinese and our own recipes we have picked up from Asia. There is about 80 dishes in all, vegetarian and gluten free option are available.
Also offer a takeaway service, with 25% discount. We were one of the first pubs in the 1990's to offer a takeaway from a pub
There is an English selection of sandwiches, and light snacks through out the day, and also till 18.00pm we offer the Early Bird, which is 2 courses for £9.99. In the evening we will still offer a small selection of English food.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PP0NC5 - Lieutenant general John Manners was famed for his military prowess and for charging at the head of the British cavalry during the Battle of Warburg in 1760.
Losing his hat and wig during the charge, legend says that the Marquis' bald head shining in the light helped to guide his troops.
Following the war he helped several men who served in the war to become publicans, with their pubs then being named after him as a mark of respect.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A9GHY6 - A sundial is a device that tells the time of day when there is sunlight by the apparent position of the Sun in the sky. In the narrowest sense of the word, it consists of a flat plate (the dial) and a gnomon, which casts a shadow onto the dial. As the Sun appears to move across the sky, the shadow aligns with different hour-lines, which are marked on the dial to indicate the time of day. The style is the time-telling edge of the gnomon, though a single point or nodus may be used. The gnomon casts a broad shadow
the shadow of the style shows the time. The gnomon may be a rod, wire, or elaborately decorated metal casting. The style must be parallel to the axis of the Earth's rotation for the sundial to be accurate throughout the year. The style's angle from horizontal is equal to the sundial's geographical latitude.
In a broader sense, a sundial is any device that uses the Sun's altitude or azimuth (or both) to show the time. In addition to their time-telling function, sundials are valued as decorative objects, literary metaphors, and objects of intrigue and mathematical study.
A rudimentary sundial can be easily constructed to mark the passing of time by placing a stick in the sand or a nail in a board and placing markers at the edge of a shadow or outlining a shadow at intervals. It is common for inexpensive, mass-produced decorative sundials to have incorrectly aligned gnomons, shadow lengths, and hour-lines, which cannot be adjusted to tell correct time

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4443599673 - 'I cycled on my bike the 50 minute journey to this excellent grade II listed country pub many times. The George and Dragon in the Cheshire Village of Great Budworth was originally under control of the Arley Hall estate. Its original origins are thought to go back to 1722, according to a stone inside inscribed in latin. Its picturesque look is mainly down to vanity in victorian times when Rowland Egerton-Warburton (lord of the manor) decided a makeover (a'la changing rooms) was in order. The village and pub were not picturesque enough apparently. The architect John Douglas was dispatched from the city of Chester to add elaborate tall chimneys, a turret and fancy mullioned windows.
The pub sign is very interesting, similar in make up to those seen on inns on the Rhine, south of Cologne, Germany. The cut-out pictorial sign itself came from Nuremberg. The hefty bracket it hangs from was a product of a local smithy. Above the inner door can be seen a stone containing a verse written by Rowland Egerton-Warburton.
A view from the church pulpit opposite the pub can be seen here www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/4333545672/

Thelwall is plagued with many stories of ghosts www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/4103283717/ , as many of the old buildings remain in the area. Many stories of ghost's are found in the older area of Thelwall. Many of the sightings are usually from the Local Pub: 'the Little Manor'. However there has been stories of witches at the old white house with the well on the outskirts of Thelwall.
The church of England All Saints Church is just further north of the pub www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3691489296/
A fortified city was established at Thelwall in 923 during the reign of King Edward the Elder, which is mentioned in two very early sources, including the Anglo Saxon Chronicle:
Kynge Edwarde made a cite at Thelewall in [th]e northe parte of [th]e Marches, nye the water of Mersee, where he put a certeyne knyghtes.
A.D. 923. This year went King Edward with an army, late in the harvest, to Thelwall
and ordered the borough to be repaired, and inhabited, and manned. And he ordered another army also from the population of Mercia, the while he sat there to go to Manchester in Northumbria, to repair and to man it. This year died Archbishop Plegmund
and King Reynold won York.
Earthwork remains of a embankment, possibly part of these fortifications, has been found on the grounds of Chaigeley School. These remains are an English Heritage National Monument.

This pub has a rich history. Licensees are known from 1778 although the age of the original building is unknown.
The Northwich Guardian newspaper had offices in the corner portion of the building before it moved to its present premises.
In the 1860's the Crown also functioned as the County Court and Petty Sessions House. Public auctions of real estate were also held here.
In 1966 this public house was one of those permitted an extension of opening hours 'for the accommodation of persons attending the Northwich Public Market'.
The Crown was renamed the Swinging Witch for a few years from 1978 and then the Brasserie Couronne until recently reverting to 'the Crown'.

However it did not survive the renovations and is now the site of Bartholomew Court, a McCarthy and Stone housing scheme 44 sheltered apartments for people aged 60-plus.
it was actually the second pub to bear the name 'Dog and Dart' in Grappenhall - and the first was around 200 years old when it was demolished.
Parish councillor Mike Biggin said the people of Grappenhall and Thelwall were overwhelmingly opposed to demolition of the pub. It had a football and a children's rugby team.

I am not sure what the pub was named after. A 'Rams Head' in canal terms is the wooden rudder post on a butty usually decorated with rope work and sometimes with a horse's tail. Maybe this is the source as the Bridgewater canal is only a short stones throw away.
