Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E4248M - The Blue Bell pub is pictured at dusk on Horsemarket Street in Warrington town centre, with warm exterior lanterns glowing against the brick façade and the traditional pub frontage standing out as the evening economy begins. The image is a useful editorial stock photograph for stories about pubs, hospitality, restaurants, bars, evening trade, town centre footfall and the wider night-time economy in Warrington. The Food Standards Agency lists The Blue Bell at 27 Horsemarket Street, Warrington, WA1 1TS, while other listings describe it as a traditional pub and restaurant in the heart of the town centre. The photograph is commercially useful for features on local pubs, leisure spending, hospitality jobs, licensed premises, cask ale culture, food-led pubs, high street resilience and the role of independent-looking venues in keeping town centres active after office and shopping hours. It can also illustrate debate about the pressures facing the hospitality sector, including energy bills, labour costs, food inflation, business rates and changes in consumer habits. The warm indoor light visible through the sash windows, the open doorway, the hanging lanterns and the darkening sky give the scene a welcoming mood that suits coverage of traditional British pub culture, evening dining and social life. The image may also be used for stories about town centre regeneration, destination dining, pre-event drinking, local meeting places and the social value of pubs as informal community spaces. Because the image shows the exterior only, it is especially good for general editorial use where a recognisable pub frontage is needed without focusing on drink brands or close-up customers. As a documentary image, it records a familiar part of Warrington's social landscape, linking historic-looking pub architecture with the practical reality of town centre night-time economy and the continuing importance of pubs as social spaces, eating venues and contributors to local identity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RHH6HP - Taken on 15 Aug 2023, this photograph shows Porters Ale House formally the Cross Keys, evening real ale at Buttermarket St, Warrington, Cheshire, England, WA1 2NN. The location is Buttermarket St, Warrington, Cheshire, England, WA1 2NN. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains public house signs, frontage, street activity or drinking culture details useful for hospitality and heritage features. The Warrington pub frontage links real ale, evening hospitality, town-centre leisure and the reuse of older commercial buildings in a changing high street. It could support features on pubs, beer, leisure, nightlife, tourism, heritage streets, local economies, independent hospitality and the pressures facing town-centre venues. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include Buttermarket St, Warrington, Porters, Ale House, Porters Ale House, town, centre, Victorian, building, architecture, WA1, Cheshire, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. This makes the image useful for comparison pieces, then-and-now features, local news, regeneration stories and plain-English explainers aimed at a general audience. Further SEO-friendly usage could include local services, town-centre change, heritage branding, British social history

The new car park, which was due to open
in December 2017, is a great example of
how architects and contractors can work in
partnership with Maple to transform typically
dull and utilitarian buildings into an integral and
aesthetically appealing part of the urban realm.
With its hexagon-featured golden façade, the
car park complements the other elements of
the £107m Time Square development.
The new car park is an integral and important
part of the Time Square project as it will
underpin and support the whole scheme, said
the leader of Warrington Borough Council, Terry
O'Neill.
Architect's ratings
Leach Rhodes Walker described us as excellent'
after the successful collaboration. Maple's
knowledge and craftsmanship was excellent
throughout, said LRW's lead project designer,
Ka Yin Man. From when we spoke to sales
about the commercials, to (dealing with) the
design and projects teams, the whole experience
was collaborative. In a post-project interview,
the architects' firm gave us top marks for design
services, project support, meeting deadlines
and the quality of the finished product. Added
Ka Yin: Maple were always helpful, and any
questions were dealt with promptly. Everyone
was very knowledgeable and accommodating.
The end result was even better than expected
The project was one of the first to use the new
dedicated prototype area at Maple's factory in
Stockport. The architects and contractors I & H
Brown Construction were able to view real-life
examples of the bespoke perforated panels and
golden hexagon cut-outs - at actual size. The
prototypes were powder-coated in the specified
colour, and fitted to the display framework using
actual fittings - meaning that any changes to the
design or specification could be made without
it having a major impact on timings or budget

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59WP0 - This photograph shows the LPG tanker Gale (IMO 9876335), a specialist liquefied petroleum gas carrier registered in Rotterdam, moored at Latchford Locks on the River Mersey in Warrington, Cheshire. The image was taken during the blue hour at dusk, with the deep blue evening sky contrasting against the bright white superstructure and illuminated working decks of the vessel.
The ship's design reflects its role in the transport of pressurised gas cargoes, with clearly visible deck equipment, piping, safety railings, and enclosed working areas. Prominent navigation and deck lights highlight the operational nature of the vessel and ensure visibility during night-time manoeuvres through inland waterways and lock systems.
Latchford Locks form an important part of the River Mersey navigation route, enabling commercial vessels to pass between tidal and non-tidal sections of the river. Scenes such as this illustrate the continued industrial and logistical use of Britain's inland waterways, even in urban settings like Warrington, where residential areas and historic riverside infrastructure sit alongside working maritime operations.
The calm water, artificial lighting, and absence of visible crew activity suggest a pause in transit rather than active loading or unloading. Images of LPG tankers in inland ports are commonly used to illustrate themes of energy supply, industrial transport, maritime engineering, shipping logistics, and the relationship between industry and urban waterways in the United Kingdom.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NJXBTW - St Cross Church is in the village of Appleton Thorn, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth. Its benefice is combined with that of St Matthew's Church, Stretton.
History
The church was built in 1886 to a design by Edmund Kirby at the expense of Rowland Egerton-Warburton of Arley Hall.
Architecture
It is built in red sandstone with a red tile roof, in Decorated style. Its plan is cruciform with a two-stage tower over the crossing. It has a three-window nave without aisles, a one-window chancel, an oak-framed north porch on a sandstone plinth, and a baptistry projecting from the west end. Above the baptistry is a rose window. The stained glass in the east window is by Harcourt M. Doyle, dated 1970, and that in the rose window is by Celtic Studios of Swansea, dated 1986. The organ was built in 1906 at a cost of £220 (equivalent to £30,000 in 2021), by E. Wadsworth.
External features
The churchyard contains six war graves of British service personnel, three from World War I and three from World War II

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M3JBM0 - There are various modes of transport available in Warrington.
Warrington has seven railway stations within its boundaries. The town has two main railway stations, Bank Quay on the London to Glasgow and Chester Warrington Newton-le-Willows Manchester lines, and Central on the Liverpool Widnes Manchester line and the Transpennine route. Bank Quay is much altered, but Central (built 1873) is of some architectural merit, featuring polychromatic brickwork. However, both main railway stations have suffered from years of under investment. A new entrance and concourse has been built at Bank Quay, and similar work started in July 2010 at Central station. There are also stations in the suburbs at Warrington West, Sankey, Glazebrook, Padgate and Birchwood.
The town and its districts are fairly well served by bus services. Warrington's Own Buses is the main provider of services, operating most of the day time bus routes. Arriva North West, First Greater Manchester. National Express also operate their long-distance services through Warrington. Most services that serve Warrington depart from and arrive at Warrington Interchange. However services can be caught from various points around the town centre, principally Rylands Street (for South and Eastbound routes), Academy Way (Inbound and Eastbound routes), Warrington Central for Northbound services, Sankey Street for Westbound, Eastbound and Southbound buses.

An angry Warrington South MP Andy Carter says he is going to raise the Home Office decision to allow asylum seekers at the Fir Grove Hotel at Grappenhall in parliament in the coming week.
Mr Carter yesterday held a number of meetings to understand the legal options available to Warrington Borough Council, which also opposes the decision.
He said: I held a number of meetings yesterday to understand the legal options available to the Council in terms of challenging decisions taken by the owners of the hotel and to gain more information from the Home Office and their plans for this site.
In discussions with Home Office officials, I have been advised that the cohort planned for accommodation this site will be families with children. Prior to arriving in Warrington the refugees will have been processed at centres elsewhere. The hotel has 54 rooms and a maximum occupancy of 79 guests in total.
The advice received from Kings Counsel was that an immediate legal challenge to this decision to use this site for Asylum Seekers would be unlikely to succeed, not least due the incredibly short timescales before the asylum seekers arrive in Warrington and the location of the owners of the site. Other local authorities are however pursuing legal routes related to planning legislation and a change of use requirements, which I am monitoring.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JG21Y9 - AA Limited, trading as The AA (formerly The Automobile Association), is a British motoring association.
Founded in 1905, it provides vehicle insurance, driving lessons, breakdown cover, loans, motoring advice, road maps and other services. The association demutualised in 1999, to become a private limited company, and from 2014 a public limited company (PLC). In 2002 the AA Motoring Trust was created to continue its public interest and road safety activities.
In 2021, a consortium led by Tower Brook Capital Partners and Warburg Pincus completed the acquisition of AA Limited (formerly known as AA PLC).
The Automobile Association was founded in 1905, to help motorists avoid police speed traps, in response to the Motor Car Act 1903 which introduced new penalties for breaking the speed limit, for reckless driving with fines, endorsements and the possibility of jail for speeding and other driving offences. The act also required drivers to hold a driving licence (which was obtained without a test on payment of five shillings at a post office) and to display a registration plate on their vehicle

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3TJNY - Bargain Booze is a chain of off licence shops, that operates in the United Kingdom. Established in 1981 in Sandbach, it grew to 836 shops and established the Bargain Booze Select Convenience shop franchise.
From 2013 to April 2018, it was owned by Conviviality plc, who also owned the Wine Rack chain. Both brands were acquired by Bestway on 6 April 2018
The company originates from a wholesale wine and spirits business, founded by Allan Whittle and Robert Mayor. In 1981, they opened their first retail outlet in Sandbach, Cheshire. The first Bargain Booze franchise opened in 1988, and was the first time the Bargain Booze fascia was used
2018 financial difficulties
The chain was owned by Conviviality, who also owned Matthew Clark and Bibendum, and had a head office in Crewe. In March 2018, Conviviality stated that it faced bankruptcy unless it could raise £125 million, as it issued its third profits warning in a month alongside a £30 million unpaid tax bill. The company had earlier said it was considering tapping shareholders for funds, and had arranged meetings with institutional investors to persuade them to take part in its share placing to raise the required money. This was unsuccessful and at the end of March, Conviviality announced its intention to appoint administrators within a fortnight, putting 2,600 jobs at risk. In early April 2018, the Bargain Booze and Wine Rack brands were acquired for £7 million by wholesaler Bestway, while Matthew Clark and Bibendum were acquired by C&C Group, the owner of Magners cider.
Bargain Booze is operated through a franchise model, with around 390 franchisees. The chain is strongest in the North of England, particularly the North West.It is the largest off-licence chain in the United Kingdom

Nando's Restaurant at the White Rose Centre in Leeds, West Yorkshire
Nando's opened its first restaurants within the United Kingdom, in 1992, in the west London suburbs of Ealing and Earls Court, initially focusing on takeaway food. The UK arm, owned by the Enthoven family via a private equity company, struggled until chairman Dick Enthoven put his son Robert in control. The focus then moved from takeaways to a mixed service (counter ordering and table service) model. This decision was taken after Nando's partnered with Harrison, a world-renowned branding and design agency.
They also advised Nando's to design each restaurant individually so no two restaurants were the same, a brand characteristic of the chain. Nando's expanded in the UK in 1993. The company now employs around 8,000 staff in the UK and as of 2013 had over 280 branches, with some sixty serving food conforming with Islamic dietary laws.
In 2010, Nando's UK won the Sunday Times's best place to work award in the big company category. Its sauces and marinades were also retailed in UK supermarkets.
Nando's claims to have the largest collection of South African art in the UK, with over 5,000 works displayed in restaurants
original artworks are commissioned by the company.
The United Kingdom is one of Nando's largest markets.
In March 2020, all 400 UK restaurants closed temporarily due to nationwide lockdown rules introduced by the government to limit the spread of COVID-19. In late April 2020, Nando's reopened select locations for delivery and collection services, with many more locations opening throughout May. In early July 2020, the restaurant chain started reopening a few of its outlets for eat-in service.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3T3FJ - Slug and Lettuce is a chain of bars that operate in the United Kingdom, with a large number located in London and South East England. As of 2017, there are a total of 70 outlets. Hugh Corbett opened the first Slug and Lettuce in Islington in 1985. He attempted to enhance the public house environment, at a time when standards were often low.
The bars are designed for a youthful clientele, and aim to attract an equal number of men and women with female-friendly designs. The chain has remained relevant by continually re-inventing itself for the contemporary marketplace. The chain has gone through a number of owners throughout its history, and is currently owned by the Stonegate Pub Company, based in Luton, Bedfordshire.
History
Hugh Corbett, an entrepreneur with a background in the hotel industry, opened The Slug and Lettuce pub on Islington Green, North London in 1985. At the time, Islington was becoming increasingly gentrified due to its proximity to the City of London financial district. Corbett owned a small number of pubs, which he rechristened with humorous or nonsensical names, with the effect of differentiating them from competitors. His pubs had the then notable differential of stripped out carpets and enlarged windows so that people could see inside from the street.[12] Corbett listed his business in 1989 as Fast Forward, by which time it was a nine-strong chain. In 1990 Roger Protz identified the group as an imitation of David Bruce's Firkin chain pubs

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DKW7MT - Latchford is a suburb and electoral ward of Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is around one mile south-east of Warrington town centre and has a total resident population of 7,856.
Latchford is a predominantly residential area, Latchford lies between the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal, and broadly consists of 19th-century terraced housing and some open space. The canal is crossed here by a swing bridge, a high-level road bridge and the now disused Latchford railway viaduct.
Its name came from Anglo-Saxon Læccford meaning boggy-stream ford
Latchford was originally a township in the ancient parish of Grappenhall, in Cheshire. It was also part of Bucklow Hundred, and was close to the border with Lancashire.
Between 1894 and 1974, part of Latchford was placed within the County Borough of Warrington, and the registration county of Lancashire, whilst the rest of Latchford became a civil parish named Latchford Without and was transferred to Lancashire.
With the local government reforms of 1974, as part of the newly formed Cheshire borough of Warrington, Latchford was transferred back to Cheshire

Latchford viaduct was opened on 8 July 1893 to carry the London and North Western Railway's Stockport to Warrington line over the Manchester Ship Canal. The wrought iron viaduct, with a span of 250 feet (76 m), weighed more than 1,200 tonnes. The last passengers service ran in 1962, but the line continued to carry freight. It finally closed to all traffic in July 1985, when it was deemed too expensive to make extensive repairs to keep Latchford viaduct operational.

It replaced Virgin Trains, which had operated the franchise since 1997.
In August 2019 the DfT awarded the franchise to the First Trenitalia consortium with Avanti West Coast to commence operations on 8 December 2019. Some uncertainty remains as the Competition and Markets Authority launched a merger inquiry into the award of the franchise following a referral from the European Commission
Avanti West Coast initially operates the same services as Virgin Trains on the West Coast Main Line. When High Speed 2 opens, it will also operate these services.
Over the course of the franchise several timetable changes are expected to be made

In the early 1800 (1805 1808 ish) a house stood at the corner of London Road and Walton Road which was the home of Edward Fenna and his family who was the Parish Constable. Outside the house were the Parish Stocks (removed 1850). The house was called the Stone Jug. Fenna would not have had a uniform and was unpaid for the work he did, which was not a lot. He would walk the streets with a lantern at night and have a rattle for attracting attention. He did get paid expenses for duties such as relief of the poor, flogging people and putting people in the stocks, etc.
In 1864 a single storey building was built on the existing site and there was one Sergeant and one PC for the village. The area outside the Police Station (Victoria Square) was called Pigeon Bank' and belonged to the Police Station. Every year the fairground from Warrington (Silcocks) would stop at Stockton Heath on their way to Stoke. With the permission of Sgt. Norris they set up their tents, Dobbie horses (roundabouts), Coconut Shy's etc. It is recorded that one year Sgt. Norris' son who was of age' (over 12 generally) came out of the Police Station, jumped on a Dobbie Horse and broke it.
In 1911 that Police Station was closed and demolished with a new Police Station opening the following year. The dates are to be seen on the headers of the drainpipes.
The new Station incorporated a Magistrate's Court and living quarters for the Inspector. Gas lamps, some of which can still be seen in the cells, illuminated the Police Station. The Inspector's house that was the area now used by the writing room, gents toilet and kitchen and upstairs the waiting room toilets and Court two. The Inspector's daughter who lived until recently in Stockton Heath recalled that her bedroom was the Court Waiting Room. After she came home from school she would have to clean and polish the Court floors for no payment.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFFP2R - J Sainsbury plc trading as Sainsbury's is the second largest chain of supermarkets in the United Kingdom, with a 16.0% share of the supermarket sector. Founded in 1869, by John James Sainsbury with a shop in Drury Lane, London, the company became the largest retailer of groceries in 1922. In 1995, Tesco overtook Sainsbury's to become the market leader, and Asda became the second largest in 2003, demoting Sainsbury's to third place for most of the subsequent period until January 2014, when Sainsbury's regained second place. In April 2019, whilst awaiting to merge with Asda, Sainsbury's was again demoted into third place as their rival placed second
The holding company, J Sainsbury plc, is split into three divisions: Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd (including convenience shops), Sainsbury's Bank and Sainsbury's Argos. The group's head office is in Sainsbury's Support Centre in Holborn Circus, City of London.
As of February 2018, the largest overall shareholder is the sovereign wealth fund of Qatar, the Qatar Investment Authority, which holds 21.99% of the company. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.
In April 2018, Sainsbury's and Asda were in talks of merging. On 25 April 2019, the Competition and Markets Authority announced it would not allow the merger due to an increase in price for consumers

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFFP6W - St Elphin's Church is the parish church of the town of Warrington, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Liverpool, the archdeaconry of Warrington and the deanery of Warrington.
A place of worship has been present on the site since about 650 AD, and the presence of a priest in Warrington was recorded in the Domesday Book. According to tradition the first church was built by Saint Oswald for his companion Elphin, who remained as the first priest there until his death in 679
The earliest fabric in the present church is in the chancel and the crypt, which survive from the church built in 1354 by Sir William Boteler. Some of the stained glass in the church is by Pugin. The church is dominated by its spire, 281 feet (86 m) high. It is the fifth highest parish church in the UK

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFFFME - Queen Victoria and the Oliver Cromwell statue
The gates were made for the International Exhibition of 1862, and then intended for Queen Victoria's Sandringham home in Norfolk. The Queen was meant to see them for the first time at the exhibition but, clearly visible through the gates, was a statue of Oliver Cromwell.
As Cromwell had signed King Charles I's death warrant, royalty didn't like him very much. The Queen's courtiers realised she wouldn't be amused to see the statue, and diverted her.
Coalbrookdale found it hard to find a buyer for such grand gates, so Monks was able to buy and bring them to Warrington to stand at the front of the town hall lawn. Monks also presented the cast iron Cromwell statue, designed by John Bell, to Warrington in 1899. It now stands on Bridge Street and is Grade II Listed.
The design
Because the owner was supposed to be Queen Victoria, the gates have four winged figures of Nike, the goddess of victory. They also had a Prince of Wales motif above the arch in the middle, but this was changed to Warrington's Coat of Arms.
The grand opening
Such grand gates needed a grand opening. So on Warrington Walking Day, 28 June 1895, Monks ceremoniously opened the gates with a golden key and the church groups set off from the town hall lawn, through the gates and on to their walk.
The iconic golden gates are Grade II* Listed, along with the gate piers and the lamps which line the driveways at either side of the town hall. They are also part of the Town Hall Conservation Area. The gates have recently been refurbished to repair, enhance and preserve them for future generations

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFFFNE - Warrington Town Hall, on the north side of Sankey Street, was designed and built in 1750 by James Gibbs as an elegant Georgian mansion, known as Bank Hall. It was a home for local merchant Thomas Patten and his family.
As more traffic started to use Sankey Street, the Patten family built a high brick wall in front of the building to give them privacy. But when the council bought Bank Hall in 1870 and turned it into Warrington's new town hall, local people started to complain that they were paying rates which helped to look after the building but they couldn't even see it!
So Frederick Monks, one of the town's earliest councillors, came up with an idea. As a local ironmaster, he could give the town hall a fitting entrance.

There has been an inn or hotel on the same site for much longer and the village of Grappenhall itself is recorded as far back as the Domesday Book of 1086. The image of a grinning cat carved into the tower on St. Wilfrids Church is believed to be the inspiration for Lewis Carolls Cheshire cat in Alices Adventures in Wonderland. One of the many unique features of The Rams Head Inn is the original village well, situated near the bar. The well actually pre-dates the existing building at about 150 years old, but is now fitted with walkover glass and illuminated from the inside. A large outside eating and drinking patio is located behind the pub next to the large car park. Boasting five hand pumps with three permanent ales and two guests at busy times from the Priory Inns range. Quiz night Sunday.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFFFEH - Arley Hall is a country house in the village of Arley, Cheshire, England, about 4 miles (6 km) south of Lymm and 5 miles (8 km) north of Northwich. It is home to the owner, Thomas Shelby OBE, MP and his family. The house is a Grade II* listed building, as is its adjacent chapel. Formal gardens to the southwest of the hall are also listed at Grade II* on the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. In the grounds are more listed buildings, a cruck barn being listed as Grade I, and the other buildings as Grade II. The hall was built for Rowland Egerton-Warburton between 1832 and 1845, to replace an earlier house on the site. Local architect George Latham designed the house in a style which has become known as Jacobethan, copying elements of Elizabethan architecture. A Gothic Revival chapel designed by Anthony Salvin was subsequently built next to the hall. By the mid-20th century parts of the house were in poor condition and were demolished, to be replaced by five private homes in a matching architectural style. The present gardens were created in the 1830s, and were developed during the 20th century. The garden's herbaceous border was one of the first of its type in Britain, and remains one of the finest. The house and its gardens have been open to the public since the 1960s, and have also been used as a film location. Stockley Farm, part of the Arley estate, is an additional visitor attraction for children and families

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BBXPB0 - The Thelwall Viaduct (grid reference SJ664883) is a steel composite girder viaduct in Lymm, Warrington, England. It carries the M6 motorway across the Manchester Ship Canal and the River Mersey. Its location on the motorway network is between junctions 20 and 21 of the M6, the former being also known as junction 9 of the M56.
It actually comprises two entirely separate bridges, one of 4,414 feet long carrying the northbound carriageway, which was the longest motorway bridge in England when it was opened in July 1963, and one 4,500 feet long carrying the southbound carriageway which was opened in 1995.The longest single span is the one of 336 feet crossing the ship canal.
In July 2002 a failed roller bearing was discovered and it became necessary to close all but one northbound lane. As the M6 at the time carried an estimated 150,000160,000 vehicles per day, this led to serious congestion. The viaduct was not completely reopened to daytime traffic until February 2005, and subsequently remained partially closed at night for further remedial work to take place. In all, 148 bearings were replaced, with the repair scheme costing around £52 million.
Given the bridge's height and openness to the elements it has frequently been the subject of speed reductions due to strong gusts of wind that badly affect the stability of high-sided vehicles. On several occasions lane closures have resulted as a consequence of articulated vehicles simply being blown over. However, the open sides of the bridge are a deliberate design feature to reduce the likelihood of snow drifts building on the carriageways.
In April 2011 a massive free party took place under the bridge, with reportedly over 5,000 ravers in attendance

Nestled in the countryside, yet adjacent to junction 10 of the M56 and the A49 and 3 miles from the M6, The Partridge is the ideal location for exploring Manchester, Liverpool and Chester or as a stopover on your journey from North to South, or East to West.
Originally called Walls Pit House, The Partridge dates back to 1791, borrowing its name from the man who built it, Mr Wall.
At the front of the property lay a large pit, which was caused by the excavation of puddling clay, used to line the wells. The pit, which has long since been filled in, had a variety of uses including potato washing in the summer and ice skating in the winter months.
According to the 1841 census, Walls Pit House was occupied by four unmarried siblings
George, Peter and their sisters Ann and Mary Whitley. By 1880, their nephew Charles Thomas Whitley, an architect and good university friend of Charles Darwin, was a frequent visitor of the property and an inscription by him relating to Darwin, can still be seen on one of the original oak beams in the bar.
More recently, the building was converted into a public house named The Hollow Tree before the latest chapter in the building's history saw it being transformed into a traditional inn, and renamed The Partridge, after its countryside surroundings and the birds that are regularly spotted in the local area.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4556143485 - 'St Thomas' Church is in Stockton Heath, to the south of Warrington, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building,[1] and is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth.
The present church was built in 1868 on the site of a former church that had been erected in 1838. It was designed by the Lancaster architect E. G. Paley, the main benefactor being Sir Gilbert Greenall. The tower was added later although a full set of bells were not installed until 2016. The current ring of 10 bells consists of 8 bells donated from St. John the Baptist, Bollington supplemented with two new trebles cast by John Taylor &
Co. A campaign to keep a tolling bell dating from 1883 dedicated to the wife of John Crosfield (son of Joseph Crosfield) took place in an attempt to retain the bell locally.
It is constructed in pinkish-red sandstone with Westmorland slate roofs. Its plan consists of a four-bay nave with a south aisle under a parallel ridged roof, a south porch, a north transept, a north vestry, a two-bay chancel and a west tower. The tower is in four stages with an octagonal southeast turret and an embattled parapet.
The chancel is decorated with richly coloured patterned tilework and the reredos is of marble and embossed patterned tiles. The organ was built around 1880 by Young and Sons and rebuilt in 1963 by Rushworth and Dreaper of Liverpool.
The churchyard contains the war graves of 31 service personnel, 17 from World War I and 14 from World War II.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTACN - The Warrington Transporter Bridge (or Bank Quay Transporter Bridge) across the River Mersey is a structural steel transporter bridge. The bridge has a span of 200 ft (61 m), is 30 ft (9.1 m) wide, 76 ft (23 m) feet above high water level, with an overall length of 339 ft (103 m) feet and a total height of 89 ft (27 m). It was constructed in 1915 and fell into disuse in approximately 1964. It was designed by William Henry Hunter and built by Sir William Arrol & Co.
It was the second of two transporter bridges across the Mersey at Warrington. The first was erected in 1905 slightly to the north of the existing bridge, and was described in The Engineer in 1908. A third transporter bridge over the Mersey was the Widnes-Runcorn Transporter Bridge, built in 1905 and dismantled in 1961.
The Warrington Transporter Bridge was constructed to connect the two parts of the large chemical and soap works of Joseph Crosfield and Sons. It was originally designed to carry rail vehicles up to 18 long tons (18 tonnes) in weight, and was converted for road vehicles in 1940. In 1953 it was further modified to carry loads of up to 30 long tons (30 tonnes).
The bridge is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building, and because of its poor condition it is on the Heritage at Risk Register. The bridge is protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
A local group called 'Friends of Warrington Transporter Bridge' (FoWTB) was formed in April 2015 to act as the independent voice of the bridge. The group is liaising with other interest groups to safeguard the future of the bridge and its industrial heritage status. FoWTB have been featured on the local BBC News programme North West Tonight and have set up a website for the bridge along with Facebook and Twitter pages. In 2016, the bridge was nominated for the Institution of Civil Engineers North West Heritage Award.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P307GP - Altrincham Interchange is a transport hub in Altrincham, Greater Manchester, England. It consists of a bus station on Stamford Road, a Northern Rail-operated heavy rail station on the Mid-Cheshire Line, and a light rail stop which forms the terminus of Metrolink's Altrincham Line.
The original heavy rail element of the station was opened by the Manchester, South Junction and Altrincham Railway as Altrincham and Bowdon railway station in April 1881, changing to Altrincham railway station in May 1974. The Metrolink element opened in June 1992. The Interchange underwent a complete redevelopment, at a cost of £19 million, starting in mid-July 2013. The new bus station opened officially on 7 December 2014.
Altrincham Interchange has four platforms. Two bay platforms are used for Metrolink services. Two further through platforms accommodate train services on the line between Manchester Piccadilly and Chester via Stockport. A bus station on the edge of the complex provides road-based interchange, and there is also a taxi rank.

Despite a reduction in their numbers in recent years, the traditional British red telephone box can still be seen in many places throughout the UK, and in current or former British colonies around the world. The colour red was chosen to make them easy to spot.
The red phone box is often seen as an iconic British symbol throughout the world.

Billy Squier's first public performances were at a Boston nightclub in Kenmore Square called the Psychedelic Supermarket in 1968, which is where he saw Eric Clapton and the band Cream. Squier's first original effort was with the band Magic Terry &
The Universe in 1969. In the early 1970s, he formed Kicks, which included future NY Dolls drummer Jerry Nolan.
He then joined The Sidewinders. Squier left the group to form the band Piper in 1976, which released two albums, Piper and Can't Wait, but left soon after. Upon reviewing the debut Piper, Circus Magazine touted it as the greatest debut album ever produced by an American rock band. Piper was managed by the same management company as KISS, and opened for KISS during their 1977 tour, including two nights of a sold-out run at New York's Madison Square Garden.
He reached his peak in the 1980's however, Squier was the opening act for the North American leg of Queen's 1982 Hot Space Tour. That same year he recorded a song, 'Fast Times (The Best Years of Our Lives)' for the film Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
In the early 1980s Squier did several headlining arena tours\u2014most notably with Foreigner and The Who with a backup band that included Jeff Golub on guitar, Bobby Chouinard on drums, Alan St. Jon on keyboards and Doug Lubahn on bass. Squier brought Def Leppard to America and broke them on the Emotions tour, in conjunction with the release of their 'Pyromania' LP.
Queens Park is a suburb of Chester. It is in the south of the city, just east of Handbridge. It includes a secondary school, Queens Park High School and also has a pedestrian suspension bridge link with the main city.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K43PN6 - St Thomas' Church is in Stockton Heath, to the south of Warrington, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building, and is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth
John the Baptist, Bollington supplemented with two new trebles cast by John Taylor & Co. A campaign to keep a tolling bell dating from 1883 dedicated to the wife of John Crosfield (son of Joseph Crosfield) took place in an attempt to retain the bell locally
The churchyard contains the war graves of 31 service personnel, 17 from World War I and 14 from World War II

A great track that for me brings so many (bad) memories of my young Christmas's. Those cool kids who had a Scalextric, 15 billion hours to set the track up and with that dodgy transformer, the thing never seemed to work.
The fall-back was the Subutteo (generally stored in newspaper in the loft). Somebody would cop for the headless center-forward, or the goal-keeper with no arms. the 'rich' kid of this song ends up in the DHSS (a proper job) handing out Giro's.
Half Man Half Biscuit, (HMHB), are an indie band from Birkenhead, Merseyside. Their stock in trade since the mid-1980s has been satirical, sardonic, and sometimes surreal songs. They are Nigel Blackwell on vox &
guitar, Neil Crossley on bass, Ken Hancock on lead guitar and Carl Henry on drums. They have stayed signed to 'Probe Plus records', spurning fame and fortune.
This track is included on the CD re-issue of their debut album, 1985's 'Back in the DHSS', which topped the UK Indie Chart. In April 2010, the band's 2005 song 'Joy Division Oven Gloves' from the 'Achtung Bono' album was the subject of a Facebook campaign to get it to no 6 on the chart for 12 April 2010, in response to the rumoured closure of indie station BBC 6 Music. The song reached no 56 on 11 April 2010.

The Parr Arms in Grappenhall is one of my locals and should start a Subutteo or Scalextric night to prop up trade.

What a nice feelgood effect this track has on me, even when its minus something outside on the cobbles!
British Sea Power's Yan and Hamilton Wilkinson are brothers and were school friends with Matthew Wood in Kendal, Cumbria England. They are based in Brighton where BSP amassed a large following their own club night called 'Club Sea Power'. Its numerous support acts and occasional fashion show went down well in Brighton.
'The Decline of British Sea Power', the band's first album, was released in June 2003 to critical acclaim. Their tours often include unusual venues such as the Scillonian Club on the Isles of Scilly, Grasmere Village Hall, the St. John Boste Social Club in Kendal and Carnglaze Caverns in Cornwall. They have been compared with The Cure and Joy Division.
This track is taken from 'Open Season', the second album. Well worth a listen.

Grappenhall is a village in Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is situated along the Bridgewater Canal, and forms one of the principal settlements of Grappenhall and Thelwall civil parish. According to the 2001 UK census, the population of the entire civil parish was 9,377.
Grappenhall is mentioned in the Domesday Book under the name Gropenhale, ('the Groping Place') which states it to be worth five shillings.
St Wilfrid's Church has a carving of a cat on the west face of the tower. This is believed to be Lewis Carroll's inspiration for the grinning Cheshire Cat in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The church itself was first constructed in 1120, though was rebuilt 400 years later. The church was also, at a time, in the possession of the Boidelle (Boydell) family.
Along with the church, the centre of the village contains two pubs (The Parr Arms and The Ram's Head), Grappenhall Hall residential School and St. Wilfrids Primary School. Bradshaw Community Primary School is also found north of the centre of the village.
Parts of the Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes were filmed in the Victorian cobbled centre of Grappenhall. It is also the birthplace of actor Tim Curry. Here Church lane is pictured from the west.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AA0RPY - A polling place or polling station is where voters cast their ballots in elections.
The phrase polling station is also used in American English and in British English, although polling place is the building and polling station is the specific room (or part of a room) where voters cast their votes. A polling place can contain one or more polling stations.
Since elections generally take place over a one- or two-day span on a periodic basis, often annual or longer, polling places are usually located in facilities used for other purposes, such as schools, churches, sports halls, local government offices, or even private homes, and may each serve a similar number of people. The area may be known as a ward, precinct, polling district or constituency. The polling place is staffed by officials (who may be called election judges, returning officers or other titles) who monitor the voting procedures and assist voters with the election process. Scrutineers (or poll-watchers) are independent or partisan observers who attend the poll to ensure the impartiality of the process.
The word poll means scalp or head. When votes were taken by gathering people together and counting heads, the place where this was done (sometimes an open field) was called the polls

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4576383706 - 'The suggestion is that after the May 2010 election, Britain will have lots of spare cash for all those things we aspire to spend on, such as new cancer drugs and such. With all the main parties hiding the details on what will be cut to tackle the current deficit, it is unlikely whoever gets in, there will be much left over for essential stuff like this. Most people realise it is charities, university research labs and big pharma who actuallly find these drugs, not central government. Maybe in the big Tory idea of 'everyone doing it for themselves', we should all be looking for these drugs ourselves? I read one satirical piece that suggested in this mode if we could not find a satisfactory hospital consultant the inferrence was that we should get a mirror and our own scalpal &
have a go.
It will be interesting to see what the reality is when the votes are counted and the job of dealing with that deficit starts. That could be like the colour shift in this image, a different kind of drug, a bad acid trip!

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4443599673 - 'I cycled on my bike the 50 minute journey to this excellent grade II listed country pub many times. The George and Dragon in the Cheshire Village of Great Budworth was originally under control of the Arley Hall estate. Its original origins are thought to go back to 1722, according to a stone inside inscribed in latin. Its picturesque look is mainly down to vanity in victorian times when Rowland Egerton-Warburton (lord of the manor) decided a makeover (a'la changing rooms) was in order. The village and pub were not picturesque enough apparently. The architect John Douglas was dispatched from the city of Chester to add elaborate tall chimneys, a turret and fancy mullioned windows.
The pub sign is very interesting, similar in make up to those seen on inns on the Rhine, south of Cologne, Germany. The cut-out pictorial sign itself came from Nuremberg. The hefty bracket it hangs from was a product of a local smithy. Above the inner door can be seen a stone containing a verse written by Rowland Egerton-Warburton.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4352626358 - 'Going back not too many years I used to work in Stockport, on the south of the Manchester conurbation (or Stokeport as the doomsday book apparently has it) and grew to know it quite well. More the old bits rather than the brutal Merseyway built over the top of the old Stockport Grammer School etc. I would often frequent the market place, Queens head, Bakers and Arden Arms, with St Marys Church at the top.
In my day the old Emersons wall advert was still covered up in Park Street (by an advertisment hoarding I think). It now adds a feeling of time to the marketplace, particularly when all the stalls have gone and only the church bells at the top of the road can be heard. It is partularly eary at dusk or early night time in this place when its deserted by traders, the council have tidied away all the cardboard and only victorian ghosts fill the streets.
Stockport Market is a collection of small traditional shops. Charlie on the Cheese Stall, the lady who does the alterations and of course the little cafe. It dates back to the 16th century as does the centre of town by 1884 it was the hub of the country's hatting industry. By which it was exporting more than six million hats a year. (Mental Note: One day I must make time to visit the the 'Museum of Hatting').
I once did a photoshoot for the short lived Stockport Ghost Tour.
This is the end of town where you would expect ghosts to be active. a place where victorian carriages would have drawn up, or maybe where public hangings would have taken place.
For sure, an interesting little bit of Englands North West.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4339376202 - 'Maybe a mantra for our current troubled times?
Perhaps we should worry about our carbon footprint, walk a bit more rather than drive as much? Possibly eat less supermarket food, consume in season and cut down on our food air miles ? Think more about our neighbours, come to think of it, do you even know your neighbours? Some of our prejudges should maybe be put aside, the world\u2019s more interesting when it\u2019s diverse.
I must have passed this on Orford road coming into Padgate, Warrington Cheshire a few dozen times. To stop at the traffic lights makes you consider these four words a little more deeply. Next time you wait there to follow the A50 or to go to Birchwood following the A574, consider these words.
If you have had any thoughts when passing this, please leave a comment.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4300506529 - 'With ten minutes to spare before my no 7 in the interchange turned up, I thought I would keep myself busy.
The new modern, light and spacious Warrington bus interchange was built after 13 months of construction and opened August 21st 2006. The old unloved concrete bus station dated from the late 70's. Services from here serve most of Warrington and there are some other express services to Liverpool, London, Edinburgh, Bristol, Southend-on-sea and local airports.
A centrelink bus connects this part of town with Bank Quay the mainline north/south (west coast mainline for Virgin services) railway station. See www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3709536244/
Closure of the old bus station was marked back in 2005 by a 40-year-old bus which was the last to leave the station since it opened in 1979. Some 50 special guests with commemorative tickets were taken on a final tour by driver David Leigh.
Escalators and a coffee shop link it with the new expanded and spacious Golden Square shopping complex.
Warrington Central Railway Station is close by and this is a modern welcome to Warrington visitors from west and east bound local and trans-pennine express trains.

Lymm Cross is in the village of Lymm, Cheshire, England. It has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building.
The cross dates from the early to the middle 17th century and it was restored in 1897. It is constructed of sandstone and stands on an artificially stepped natural outcrop of red sandstone. Its shaft stands in a square pavilion of red sandstone with square corner pillars. It has a stone roof with a pedimented gable to each face and ball finials.

It's crypt is the oldest room in Warrington, its spire at 281ft is the 7th highest in England. (only wide lenses need apply..).
The earliest known record of a place of worship around the site is in the year AD860.
The church has links to the Patten family who built a vault to bury family members. The last being Lord Winmarleigh in 1892.
The Lady Chapel was founded and endowed by Sir John Boteler in 1290. He and other family members were buried in the chapel.
In 1943 it became the chapel of the South Lancashire Regiment and in 1976 the chapel of The Queen's Lancashire Regiment.

Still reassuringly serving nice food and ale at the bottom of Bell lane. Or it was today anyway.
Thelwall is plagued with many stories of ghosts www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/4103283717/ , as many of the old buildings remain in the area. Many stories of ghost's are found in the older area of Thelwall. Many of the sightings are usually from the Local Pub: 'the Little Manor'. However there has been stories of witches at the old white house with the well on the outskirts of Thelwall.
The church of England All Saints Church is just further north of the pub www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3691489296/
A fortified city was established at Thelwall in 923 during the reign of King Edward the Elder, which is mentioned in two very early sources, including the Anglo Saxon Chronicle:
Kynge Edwarde made a cite at Thelewall in [th]e northe parte of [th]e Marches, nye the water of Mersee, where he put a certeyne knyghtes.
A.D. 923. This year went King Edward with an army, late in the harvest, to Thelwall
and ordered the borough to be repaired, and inhabited, and manned. And he ordered another army also from the population of Mercia, the while he sat there to go to Manchester in Northumbria, to repair and to man it. This year died Archbishop Plegmund
and King Reynold won York.
Earthwork remains of a embankment, possibly part of these fortifications, has been found on the grounds of Chaigeley School. These remains are an English Heritage National Monument.

Gatso speed cameras use radar technology to measure speed, a photo of the back of the vehicle is taken.
Gatso is the brand that Gatsometer BV use on their traffic enforcement cameras, most notably their speed cameras and red light cameras. The most commonly encountered Gatso speed cameras emit radar beams to measure the speed of the vehicle. If it is travelling above the preset trigger speed, one or two photographs are taken (depending on the device's setting, which generally depends on the requirements of the local jurisdiction).
These use a powerful flash, to show the rear of the vehicle, its registration plate, and calibration lines on the road (in many jurisdictions). Newer installations used digital cameras which have limited exposure latitude compared to wet film, these installations use an auxiliary flash placed close to the position where a speeding vehicle would exit the radar beam and the first photograph would be taken

The different lighting temperatures have unintentionally given me the colours of the Wires, blue and yellow.
This beautiful building is grade I listed and is said to have had an entry in the Doomsday book. The north arcade is from the 13th century and is thought to be the oldest surviving part of the building.
Oliver Cromwell stationed his troops in the church after the nearby Battle of Red Bank. Some damage invariably resulted. The lovely Legh Chapel has a 16th century panelled roof. In there is a brass plaque to Sir Peter Legh dated 1527. Also in the chapel are monuments to other members of the prominent Legh family, including one to Mrs Ellen Legh who died in 1831.
The tower contains of six bells (although I have yet to get into the tower). Five of these were cast (from the 4 existing bells) in 1711 by Richard Sanders and the sixth in 1882 is by John Taylor &
Co. If you have chance to have a good look around inside it is well worth it.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4354921372 - 'A night shot of the new instalations at the head of Warrington Bridge Street and Horse market near the entrance to Golden Square shopping centre. The wet evening has brought out some nice reflections in the pavement.
Warrington has been a major crossing point on the River Mersey since ancient times and there was a Roman settlement at Wilderspool. In medieval times Warrington's importance was as a bridging point of the River Mersey, and it was a fulcrum in the English Civil War.
The armies of Oliver Cromwell and the Earl of Derby both stayed near the old town centre (the parish church area). Popular legend has it that Cromwell lodged near the building which survives on Church Street as The Cottage Restaurant. The Marquis of Granby public house bears a plaque stating that the Earl of Derby 'had his quarters near this site'. Dents in the walls of the parish church are rumoured to have been caused by the cannons from the time of the Civil War. On the 13 August 1651 Warrington was the scene of the last Royalist victory of the Civil War when Scots troops under Charles II and David Leslie, Lord Newark, fought Parliamentarians under John Lambert at The Battle of Warrington Bridge.
The expansion and urbanisation of Warrington largely coincided with the Industrial Revolution, particularly after the Mersey was made navigable in the 18th Century. As Britain became industrialised, Warrington embraced the industrial revolution becoming a manufacturing town and a centre of steel (particularly wire, given its name to the local Rugby team 'Wires'), textiles, brewing, tanning and chemical industries.
The navigational properties of the river Mersey were improved, canals were built, and the town grew yet more prosperous and popular. When the age of steam came, Warrington naturally welcomed it, both as a means of transport and as a source of power for its mills.
Heavy industry declined in the 1970s and 1980s but the growth of the new town around Warrington led to a great increase in employment in light industry, distribution and technology.

Maybe a mantra for our current troubled times?
Perhaps we should worry about our carbon footprint, walk a bit more rather than drive as much? Possibly eat less supermarket food, consume in season and cut down on our food air miles ? Think more about our neighbours, come to think of it, do you even know your neighbours? Some of our prejudges should maybe be put aside, the world's more interesting when it's diverse.

The Smiths 'Death Of A Disco Dancer ' - Play this track here.
Three tracks that all get 'heavy rotation' on my iPod.
Unfortunately the old 'Mr Smiths' has now seen better days. Closed now in its last incarnation as Halo, most people might remember it as the start point of the TV show 'Hitman and Her'.
It was a British television dance music show hosted by (record producer &
keen keen railway enthusiast) Pete Waterman and (Vegetarian Childrens TV star) Michaela Strachan. It ran almost continuously for over four years and three months September 1988 until December 1992.
Mr Smiths was quite a good club, visible from anyone crossing Bridge St into town. Tuesdays was usually a lively night. It was pound a pint in town and all Chinese takeaways were closed that night, hence in Mr Smiths it was often referred to as 'Triad Night', due to all young Chinese things partying.
If you have a memory of the old Mr Smiths, please leave a comment.
One comment I spotted on a blog was this:

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CET1GE - Here shown at dusk, Warrington Town Hall is in the town of Warrington, Cheshire, England.
It consists of a house, originally called Bank Hall, flanked by two detached service wings at right angles to the house, one on each side. The house and the service wings are each designated by English Heritage as Grade I listed buildings.
At the time the house was built Warrington was in the historic county of Lancashire. The architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner declared it to be the finest house of its date in south Lancashire
Bank Hall was built in 1750 for Thomas Patten. The architect was James Gibbs and it is likely that it was the last important building of his design to be completed in his lifetime. When it was built it stood in open countryside to the north of the town of Warrington.
The Patten family were important merchants in the town. Thomas' father had made the lower River Mersey navigable from Runcorn to Bank Quay, Warrington, and had established a copper smelting factory at Bank Quay. In 1870 John Wilson-Patten, 1st Baron Winmarleigh, sold the hall to Warrington Borough Council for £9000 (£640,000 as of 2013), and 13 acres (5.3 ha) of surrounding land for a further £15,000 (£1,060,000 as of 2013).
Almost all of the land was opened as Warrington's first public park in 1873. When the house was built, it was surrounded by a high wall. In 1895 this was replaced by iron railings and a fine set of gates.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYF8B - Eastgate and Eastgate Clock in Chester, Cheshire, England, stand on the site of the original entrance to the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix. It is a prominent landmark in the city of Chester and is said to be the most photographed clock in England after Big Ben.
The original gate was guarded by a timber tower which was replaced by a stone tower in the 2nd century, and this in turn was replaced probably in the 14th century. The present gateway dates from 1768 and is a three-arched sandstone structure which carries the walkway forming part of Chester city walls. In 1899 a clock was added to the top of the gateway to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria two years earlier. It is carried on openwork iron pylons, has a clock face on all four sides, and a copper ogee cupola. The clock was designed by the Chester architect John Douglas. The whole structure, gateway and clock, was listed by English Heritage on 28 July 1955 as a Grade I listed building

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYHH9 - City of Chester, NW England UK taken at dusk.
Chester is a city in Cheshire, England. Lying on the River Dee, close to the border with Wales, it is home to 120,622 inhabitants, and is the largest and most populous settlement of the wider unitary authority area of Cheshire West and Chester, which had a population of 328,100 according to the 2001 Census. Chester was granted city status in 1541.
Chester was founded as a castrum or Roman fort with the name Deva Victrix in the year 79 by the Roman Legio II Adiutrix during the reign of the Emperor Vespasian. Chester's four main roads, Eastgate, Northgate, Watergate and Bridge, follow routes laid out at this time almost 2,000 years ago. One of the three main Roman army bases, Deva later became a major settlement in the Roman province of Britannia. After the Romans left in the 5th century, the Saxons fortified the town against the Danes and gave Chester its name.
Chester was one of the last towns in England to fall to the Normans in the Norman conquest of England. William the Conqueror ordered the construction of a castle, to dominate the town and the nearby Welsh border. In 1071 he made Hugh d'Avranches the first Earl of Chester.
Chester has a number of medieval buildings, but some of the black-and-white buildings within the city centre are actually Victorian restorations. Chester is one of the best preserved walled cities in Britain. Apart from a 100-metre (330 ft) section, the listed Grade I walls are almost complete.
The Industrial Revolution brought railways, canals, and new roads to the city, which saw substantial expansion and development Chester Town Hall and the Grosvenor Museum are examples of Victorian architecture from this period.
