Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJPXWN - Phrenology is a pseudoscience that involves the measurement of bumps on the skull to predict mental traits. It is based on the concept that the brain is the organ of the mind, and that certain brain areas have localized, specific functions or modules. It was said that the brain was composed of different muscles, so those that were used more often were bigger, resulting in the different skull shapes. This led to the reasoning behind why everyone had bumps on the skull in different locations. The brain muscles not being used as frequently remained small and were therefore not present on the exterior of the skull. Although both of those ideas have a basis in reality, phrenology generalized beyond empirical knowledge in a way that departed from science. The central phrenological notion that measuring the contour of the skull can predict personality traits is discredited by empirical research. Developed by German physician Franz Joseph Gall in 1796, the discipline was influential in the 19th century, especially from about 1810 until 1840. The principal British centre for phrenology was Edinburgh, where the Edinburgh Phrenological Society was established in 1820.
Phrenological skull, European, 19th century. Wellcome Collection, London
Phrenology is today recognized as pseudoscience. The methodological rigor of phrenology was doubtful even for the standards of its time, since many authors already regarded phrenology as pseudoscience in the 19th century. There have been various studies conducted that discredited phrenology, most of which were done with ablation techniques. Marie-Jean-Pierre Flourens demonstrated through ablation that the cerebrum and cerebellum accomplish different functions. He found that the impacted areas never carried out the functions that were proposed through the pseudoscience, phrenology

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJ2A3M - Bacharach (pronunciation (help?info), also known as Bacharach am Rhein) is a town in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde of Rhein-Nahe, whose seat is in Bingen am Rhein, although that town is not within its bounds.
The original name Baccaracus suggests a Celtic origin. Above the town stands Stahleck Castle (Burg Stahleck), now a youth hostel.
Geography
Location
The town lies in the Rhine Gorge, 48 km south of Koblenz.
Constituent communities
Bacharach is divided into several Ortsteile. The outlying centre of Steeg lies in the Steeg Valley (Steeger Tal) off to the side, away from the Rhine. This glen lies between Medenscheid and Neurath to the south and Henschhausen to the north on the heights.
History
In the early 11th century, Bacharach had its first documentary mention. It may have been that as early as the 7th century, the kingly domain passed into Archbishop of Cologne Kunibert's ownership
pointing to this is a Kunibertskapelle (chapel) on the spot where now stands the Wernerkapelle. The V??gte of the Cologne estate were the Elector of the Palatinate, who over time pushed back Cologne's influence.
Caring for and maintaining Bacharach's building monuments, spurred on in the early 20th century by the Rhenish Association for Monument Care and Landscape Preservation (Rheinischer Verein f?r Denkmalpflege und Landschaftsschutz) which took on the then highly endangered town wall and Stahleck Castle ruin jobs, and the great dedication of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate to the Wernerkapelle have seen to it that Bacharach is still a jewel of the Rheinromantik and a multifaceted documentary site of mediaeval architecture on the Middle Rhine. The Wernerkapelle ruin is under monumental protection and before it a plaque has been placed recalling the inhuman crimes against Jewish residents and also containing a quotation from a prayer by Pope John XXIII for a change in Christians' thinking in their relationship

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A9D8BG - Solvay Interox is part of the strategic Solvay Peroxides Strategic Business Unit.
The site produces Hydrogen Peroxide in a variety of grades for use in a wide variety of applications including pulp and paper bleaching, disinfection, environmental treatment, chemical synthesis and aquaculture. Paramove??, a special grade of hydrogen peroxide used in the fish farming industry, is produced by a GMP manufacturing facility at Warrington.
The site was first established in 1948 and became fully owned by Solvay in 1992.
Community information
Solvay Warrington works closely with local schools and colleges to promote the benefits which science brings to our communities. We host school visits to our factory, sponsor a local High School to manufacture trophies for the Chemical Industries Association Awards ceremony and support an annual science conference at Priestley College.
Solvay encourage our employees to participate in community and charitable activities and provide financial support when appropriate.
Advice to the public
Solvay's Warrington site is an upper tier COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations 2006) site. In line with the COMAH regulations, we submit a Safety Report to the Health and Safety Executive every five years. The report assesses the hazards and risks associated with our operations and details the controls we employ in order to reduce the risks to As Low as is Reasonably Practicable.
In the unlikely event of a major chemical incident, we will sound our COMAH alarm to alert the local community. If you hear the alarm (a two-tone siren), immediately go inside, close all doors and windows and tune in to a local radio station.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MG40BY - Bile Beans was a laxative and tonic first marketed in the 1890s. The product supposedly contained substances extracted from a hitherto unknown vegetable source by a fictitious chemist known as Charles Forde. In the early years Bile Beans were marketed as Charles Forde's Bile Beans for Biliousness, and sales relied heavily on newspaper advertisements. Among other cure-all claims, Bile Beans promised to disperse unwanted fat and purify and enrich the blood.
Although the manufacturer claimed that the formula for Bile Beans was based on a vegetable source known only to Aboriginal Australians, its actual ingredients, which included cascara, rhubarb, liquorice and menthol, were commonly found in pharmacies of the period. A court case initiated in Scotland in 1905 found that the Bile Bean Manufacturing Company's business was based on a fraud and conducted fraudulently, but Bile Beans continued to be sold until the 1980s nevertheless.
Formulation and manufacture
Charles Edward Fulford (1870?1906) and Ernest Albert Gilbert (1875?1905) first sold Bile Beans in Australia in late 1897, marketed as Gould's Bile Beans. Fulford was a Canadian who had travelled to Australia to sell Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People for his uncle, George Taylor Fulford.
Fulford and Gilbert established the Bile Bean Manufacturing Company in Leeds, England, in 1899. It was claimed that the formula for Bile Beans was created by an Australian scientist Charles Forde in 1898, based on research he had conducted on a vegetable source known only to Aboriginal Australians. In reality, Charles Forde did not exist
the name was used as an alias for Charles Fulford, who had no scientific training

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBF05F - Block Drug Company was a pharmaceutical company based in Jersey City, New Jersey, United States, that specialized in dental care products. Its most popular products included Polident denture cleanser, Poli-Grip denture adhesive, Dentu-Creme denture toothpaste, Nytol sleeping pill, Tegrin medicated shampoo for psoriasis, Lava hand soaps (acquired from Procter & Gamble), Beano and Phazyme anti-gas products, Balmex diaper rash ointments, and Sensodyne desensitizing toothpaste.
GlaxoSmithKline purchased the company for $1.24 billion in 2001.
The company was founded in 1907 by Alexander Block, a Russian immigrant who had a small drugstore on Fulton Street in Brooklyn, New York. He turned the company into a wholesaler in 1915, then became a drug manufacturer in 1925, acquiring a 50 percent interest in Wernet's Dental Manufacturing Company.
Block Drug moved its headquarters to Jersey City, New Jersey in 1938.
Although Alexander Block built the company largely through acquisitions, he developed the Polident brand internally during the 1930s. In 1948, Block Drug rolled out the Ammi-i-Dent tooth powder, and in the early 1950s, the company developed Nytol. After Alexander Block's death in 1953, his son Leonard N. Block (1911?2005) took over, eventually becoming the company's chairman. The last major new product the company introduced was Tegrin, in 1964.
Although Block Drug was a public company from 1971 until 2001, it operated much like a private, family-run firm, with the Block family holding all voting shares plus 54 percent of the non-voting stock. In addition, the company never held annual meetings or issued proxy statements
Leonard N. Block died in 2005 at age 93 after suffering for years from Alzheimer's disease. Block's nephew John P. Roberts was the producer of the Woodstock Festival using money from his Block inheritance.

Chemistry sets were educational toys allowing the user (typically a bored teenager) to perform simple chemistry experiments.
In the United Kingdom, Thomas Salter Science produced a series of seven chemistry sets in the 1970s. mainstays in these sets were vials of chemicals, exotic labels, test tubes and cork stoppers, an instruction manual, litmus paper, safety goggles and a burner of some description.
Amateur chemistry or home chemistry is the pursuit of chemistry as a private hobby. It should not be confused with clandestine chemistry, which involves the illicit production of controlled drugs.
Throughout much of the 20th century, amateur chemistry was an unexceptional hobby, with high-quality chemistry sets readily available, and laboratory suppliers freely selling to hobbyists. For example, Linus Pauling had no difficulty in procuring
