Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8E1CN - Promotional display for the Gran Cabalgata de Reyes Magos, or Three Kings Parade, photographed in Los Cristianos, Arona, Tenerife, in early January. The colourful banner shows the Three Wise Men riding camels and includes Spanish and English wording, reflecting the importance of the event for both local families and international visitors staying in the south Tenerife resorts. In Spain and the Canary Islands, the arrival of Los Reyes Magos, Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar, is one of the major Christmas season traditions, with parades usually held on the evening of 5 January before Epiphany and gift-giving on 6 January. The image is useful for editorial coverage of Tenerife tourism, Spanish Christmas customs, Canary Islands festivals, family events, winter sun holidays, cultural tourism, local council celebrations and the blending of religious tradition, civic festivity and visitor marketing in resort towns. Los Cristianos is part of the municipality of Arona and is a major holiday destination near Playa de las Americas and Costa Adeje, so bilingual event advertising helps present local customs to tourists as well as residents. Guide listings for recent years describe the Los Cristianos parade as the Grand Parade of Their Majesties the Three Wise Men from the East, travelling from Juan Carlos I Avenue towards the exterior of the Los Cristianos Cultural Centre. The photograph also works for stories about how Spanish Christmas continues beyond 25 December, with the Reyes Magos celebrations marking the emotional high point for many children. The illustrated camels, royal figures, stars and warm colours give the display a festive, family-friendly feel, while the white building and bright daylight place it clearly in a subtropical Canarian resort setting rather than mainland winter Spain. It is a strong stock image for travel guides, holiday features, event previews, education about Spanish traditions, family tourism, municipal celebrations, January travel, Christmas abroad

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RC6H65 - The Annual Traditional Orange Lodge Parades are returning to Liverpool and Southport this week to commemorate the 333rd anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne which took place in 1690. This year, nearly 70 lodges will be taking part on Wednesday, July 12.
They will be joined by some Orange bands - accordion and concertina bands, and some juniors. Many of the children will be dressed as King William and Queen Mary while the Provincial King, Queen and Bible Carrier are made up of young children from No 5 Enniskillen District who have been preparing for the event for over 12 months.
For the first time in many years, the parade will be led by a traditional pipe band with members from the Everton and District Pipe Band in full highland dress. Minibuses will be driving within the ranks of the parade to allow elderly members, some of whom have over 60 years of service to the institution in Liverpool, or members unable to walk to a full and active part in the proceedings.
This year's parade is the first in 71 years to take place with a king as the monarch. Special badges have been commissioned to celebrate the King's Coronation which took place in May.
Orange parades will take place in Liverpool, Dingle and Southport. The main parades will move off from Netherfield Road and Corn Street in the Dingle around 9am on Wednesday morning.
The parades will make their way to the city centre and meet around the vicinity of Lime Street to board buses to Southport before forming up on London Street, Southport at approximately 11.15am. As per previous years, upon arriving in Southport, Liverpool parade members will be joined by others from all over England including Bootle, Manchester, Sunderland, London, Corby, Birmingham, Sussex and many more locations.
Senior officers from Scotland and Northern Ireland will also join the parade to celebrate the day which will see approximately 3,000 to 4,000 people on the streets of Southport. There is always a carnival atmosphere at the event.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RX1858 - This image shows the former marketplace area in Warrington town centre decorated with large rainbow-coloured canopy panels in preparation for a Pride event. The bright fabric strips are suspended above communal seating and tables, transforming the covered public space into a visually striking symbol of LGBTQ inclusion, diversity, and celebration. Members of the public can be seen using the space beneath the colourful installation, reinforcing its role as an everyday civic environment adapted for a community event.
Warrington, a large town in Cheshire, has in recent years invested in town-centre regeneration and the reimagining of public spaces to support events, social activity, and local identity. Pride celebrations form part of a wider programme of cultural events across towns and cities in the UK, promoting visibility, equality, and support for LGBTQ communities while drawing people into shared urban spaces.
The image captures themes of Pride, inclusivity, community life, and the evolving use of traditional market areas within British town centres. It is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to LGBTQ Pride events, diversity and inclusion, civic space, urban regeneration, community gatherings, and contemporary social culture in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64N03 - East Midlands Railway's special Rainbow Train celebrates Belper and Derby Pride
A special livery has been created by the East Midlands Railway's LGBTQIA+ Employee Network to celebrate Pride and support diversity in the workplace.
The Pride train features a stunning rainbow swoosh' livery also features the tagline Lets Roll with Pride' and is now emblazoned to a Class 158 train.
The rail operator has set up six employee network groups, one of which is Stronger Together' with an aim of improving the representation of its LGBTQIA+ employees alongside the promotion of diversity and inclusion within their workplace.
Jacob Lane, Duty Depot Delivery Manager and EMR LGBQTIA+ Network Lead said: The idea for a Pride train came about after a discussion in one of our network meetings. We thought this would be an awesome way of showcasing our commitment as a network to set EMR on the right path to promoting Diversity and Inclusion. It's also a great way to show our support to the Pride events taking place on our network, two of which we are sponsoring.
Alongside the Pride train, we have created pronoun badges for any employees who would like to wear one and our Organisation Development & Culture Manager Amanda Elkin, has created a video on the importance of getting pronouns right.
The Pride train will be out and about on East Midlands Railway Regional routes from the 6th of August and will operate the Derwent Valley Line between Derby and Matlock in support of Belper Pride on Saturday the 6th of August and also Derby Pride which is taking place on Saturday the 10th of September. The route has recently been part of a £500,000 track upgrade project, creating a more reliable railway for passengers.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NJ6RXA - The Mainz Carnival (Mainzer Fastnacht, Määnzer Fassenacht or Meenzer Fassenacht) is a months-long citywide carnival celebration in Mainz, Germany that traditionally begins on 11 November but culminates in the days before Ash Wednesday in the spring.
It is one of the largest carnival events in Germany and, along with the Cologne and Düsseldorfer carnivals, Mainz is one of the three cities prominent in the rhenish carnival tradition. Aside from the celebrations, parades, and jollity which are typical of carnival traditions in many countries, the Mainz carnival has an unusual emphasis on political and literary humor and commentary.
The tradition of carnival can be traced back to the Christian moveable feasts, where Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and occurs forty-six days (forty days not counting Sundays) before Easter. The first written records of the tradition date from the 13th and 14th century. By that time, regulations against excessive gluttony and debauchery during the days before carnival had been established.
In the beginning, the Mainz carnival was non-political. The activities of the carnivalistic organizations (MCV, Ranzengarde, Rosenmontagszug, sessions) had been watched closely by the grand ducal authorities, but generally allowed to continue
Traditionally, carnival season in Mainz begins on November 11 at 11:11, and continues through Ash Wednesday. However, the event peaks in February or March in the days leading up to Ash Wednesday.
Political commentary and caricature have become a notable part of the Mainz carnival, and especially of its parades. For example, floats during one parade in the late 1980s showed Uncle Sam and a Russian soldier climbing out of suits of armor, and portrayed Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev in a bathtub.
The battle cry of the Mainz carnival, Helau, originates from Düsseldorf and was introduced in 1938 in Mainz

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NJ6RXG - The Mainz Carnival (Mainzer Fastnacht, Määnzer Fassenacht or Meenzer Fassenacht) is a months-long citywide carnival celebration in Mainz, Germany that traditionally begins on 11 November but culminates in the days before Ash Wednesday in the spring.

Mahsa Amini's death could be the spark that ignites Iran around women's rights
Weronika Strzyżyńska
On the day that news of Mahsa Amini's death spread throughout Iran, a young woman with a shaved head joined protesters who had gathered outside Kasra hospital, where Amini had lain in a coma since her violent arrest by Iran's morality police days earlier.
In her hand she carried a plastic bag full of her long hair, shorn off in a gesture of solidarity with Amini and in defiance of the increasing crackdown on women by the regime.
A week later, and protests sparked by Amini's death are raging in the province of Kurdistan and Tehran as well as cities such as Rasht, Isfahan and Qom, one of Iran's most religiously conservative cities.
The rage across Iran at the brutal pointlessness of Amini's death has lit the fires of protest and the increasing desperation of the authorities to extinguish it are, some believe, a sign of the growing strength and momentum of Iran's women's rights movement.
Women's issues have long been a catalyst for broader political action in Iran, said Annabelle Sreberny, professor emeritus at the Iranian Studies Centre at Soas University of London. This could be it. It could be the moment when people motivated by all the problems facing Iran today, like rising inflation, ecological crisis and lack of democratic participation, coalesce around these women's issues to challenge the regime.
During the past week women have been at the forefront of many of the demonstrations, shaving their heads and burning their headscarves in defiance of the strict hijab law and its brutal enforcement that led to 22-year-old Amini's arrest and allegedly her death.
The women's movement in Iran started in the first month of the Islamic Republic and has been simmering for at least the last 20 years, said Sreberny.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KG3W4D - With over 220 stalls across nine sites throughout the city centre, this year's Christmas Markets are set to bring some much-needed festive cheer to the city's streets and squares in the run-up to Christmas.
24 years on from the first ever Manchester Christmas Markets in 1998, the markets continue to attract Mancunians and visitors alike to the city in their thousands to fill up on the fantastic festive treats on offer.
This year will see the iconic ski chalet market stalls take over Piccadilly Gardens - once again set to be transformed into the Winter Gardens - Market Street, Cathedral Gardens, Exchange Street, New Cathedral Street, St Ann's Square, Exchange Square, The Corn Exchange, and King Street.
Making sure the city looks its sparkly best in the run-up to Christmas is of course just as important and this year sees the return of the magical Manchester Christmas lights trail, illuminating the city centre throughout the festive season with its walk-through giant baubles, a Manchester bee, and of course Santa Claus himself - who will be keeping an eye on all things Christmas in Manchester from his perch on high in front of Central Library on St Peter's Square.
For those who look forward to a seasonal skate, Skate Manchester's family-friendly covered ice rink will once again take up its usual spot in Cathedral Gardens where skaters can skate around a beautiful Christmas tree and enjoy twinkling lights, the smell of gingerbread, and Christmas songs on repeat.
New for 2022, Festive Sundays will see the city's streets and squares filled with some extra special not-to-be-missed Manchester Christmas magic as roaming puppets, supersized penguins and illuminated bands take to the city's main shopping streets, every Sunday from 13 November - 18 December.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M3JBMF - Shortly before midday on Saturday, 20 March 1993, The Samaritans in Liverpool received a bomb warning by telephone. According to police, the caller said only that a bomb had been planted outside a Boots shop. Merseyside Police sent officers to branches of Boots in Liverpool and warned the Cheshire Constabulary, who patrolled nearby Warrington. About 30 minutes later, at about 12:25, two bombs exploded on Bridge Street in Warrington, about 100 yards (90 m) apart. The blasts happened within a minute of each other. One exploded outside Boots and McDonald's, and one outside the Argos catalogue store. The area was crowded with shoppers. Witnesses said that shoppers fled from the first explosion into the path of the second. It was later found that the bombs had been placed inside cast-iron litter bins, causing large amounts of shrapnel. Buses were organised to ferry people away from the scene and 20 paramedics and crews from 17 ambulances were sent to deal with the aftermath.
Three-year-old Johnathan Ball died at the scene. He had been in town with his babysitter, shopping for a Mother's Day card. The second victim, 12-year-old Tim Parry, was gravely wounded. He died on 25 March 1993 when his life support machine was switched off, after tests had found only minimal brain activity. Another 54 people were injured, four of them seriously. One of the survivors, 32-year-old Bronwen Vickers, the mother of two young daughters, had to have a leg amputated, and died just over a year later from cancer.
The Provisional IRA issued a statement the day after the bombing, acknowledging its involvement but saying:
Responsibility for the tragic and deeply regrettable death and injuries caused in Warrington yesterday lies squarely at the door of those in the British authorities who deliberately failed to act on precise and adequate warnings
A day later, an IRA spokesman said that two precise warnings had been given in adequate time, one to the Samaritans and one to Merseyside Police

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M6YFFF - Wild Drawing 3D street art adorns Cheltenham Midland hotel wall.
An Indonesian street artist has completed a huge painting on the side of a Cheltenham hotel.
The mural depicts the French cartoonist and writer Moebeus, and was painted by the artist Wild Drawing, otherwise known as WD.
Originally from Bali, he hides his true identity and paints all over the world, specialising in 3D designs.
His work on the side of the Midland Hotel is believed to be the first artwork he has created in the UK.
The new artwork took 10 days to create and was produced by the Athens-based artist as part of the Cheltenham Paint Festival, which takes place every September.
It was due to have been finished earlier, but was finally completed last week after delays due to bad weather.
Festival director Andrew Davies said WD used a mini-roller on the end of a 4m (13ft)-long pole to sketch out the painting.
He learned to do this in his native Bali when starting out as he didn't have the money available for lifts etc, and has carried on ever since, he said.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHB70F - A hot cross bun is a spiced sweet bun usually made with fruit, marked with a cross on the top, and has been traditionally eaten on Good Friday in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, India, Pakistan and the United States. They are available all year round in some places, including the UK
The bun marks the end of the Christian season of Lent and different parts of the hot cross bun have a certain meaning, including the cross representing the crucifixion of Jesus, and the spices inside signifying the spices used to embalm him at his burial and may also include orange peel to reflect the bitterness of his time on the Cross
One theory is that the contemporary hot cross bun originates from St Albans, in England, where, in 1361, Brother Thomas Rodcliffe, a 14th-century monk at St Albans Abbey, developed a similar recipe called an 'Alban Bun' and distributed the bun to the local poor on Good Friday.
In 1592, during the reign of Elizabeth I of England, the London Clerk of Markets issued a decree forbidding the sale of hot cross buns and other spiced breads, except at burials, on Good Friday, or at Christmas. The punishment for transgressing the decree was forfeiture of all the forbidden product to the poor. As a result of this decree, hot cross buns at the time were primarily made in domestic kitchens. Further attempts to suppress the sale of these items took place during the reign of James I of England (16031625)
The traditional method for making the cross on top of the bun is to use shortcrust pastry, though some 21st century recipes recommended a paste of flour and water

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JB87DB - A close-up editorial photograph of a traditional British cask ale handpump clip advertising Platinum Jubilee, a 4.5% ABV beer from Facer's Brewery, displayed on a polished brass beer engine inside a pub bar. The design features a cartoon-style portrait of Queen Elizabeth II against a bold Union Jack background, linking the beer branding directly to the national celebrations for the Platinum Jubilee marking seventy years of the late Queen's reign. This image captures several highly marketable themes at once: real ale culture, British brewing, royal memorabilia, monarchy, patriotic branding, pub interiors, hand-pulled cask beer, and commemorative products created for major state occasions. The composition also conveys the atmosphere of a working bar, with bottles, shelving and soft interior lighting fading into the background, helping place the viewer firmly inside an authentic UK licensed premises rather than a studio setting. Useful editorial, commercial and cultural search terms connected with this scene include British pub, pump clip, beer badge, ale branding, cask-conditioned beer, draught ale, hospitality trade, licensed bar, traditional pub culture, celebratory beer, souvenir design, royal celebration, United Kingdom identity, national occasion, beverage marketing, local brewery promotion, and consumer nostalgia. The image would suit stories or features about the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, themed products, the drinks industry, independent breweries, pub merchandising, British tourism, and the enduring link between monarchy, patriotism and the pub trade in Britain. It also works as a documentary illustration of how breweries and pubs responded to major public events with limited-edition beers, special branding and eye-catching point-of-sale artwork designed to attract drinkers at the bar. The strong red, white and blue palette against the warm brass handpump reinforces classic pub aesthetics and instantly signals Britishness.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JBXJJJ - The national flag of the United Kingdom is the Union Jack, also known as the Union Flag.
The design of the Union Jack dates back to the Act of Union 1801 which united the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland (previously in personal union) to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The flag consists of the red cross of Saint George (patron saint of England (which also represents Wales)), edged in white, superimposed on the saltire of St Patrick (patron saint of Ireland), also edged in white, which are superimposed on the saltire of Saint Andrew (patron saint of Scotland). Wales is not represented in the Union Flag by Wales's patron saint, Saint David, because the flag was designed whilst Wales was part of the Kingdom of England.
The Union Flag can be flown by any individual or organisation in Great Britain on any day of their choice. Legal regulations restrict the use of the Union Flag on Government buildings in Northern Ireland. Long-standing restrictions on Government use of the flag elsewhere were abolished in July 2007
The Union Flag is flown from Government buildings at half-mast in the following situations:
from the announcement of the death of the Sovereign (an exception is made for Proclamation Day the day the new Sovereign is proclaimed, when the Flag is flown at full mast from 11 am to sunset)
the day of the funeral of a member of the British Royal Family
the funeral of a foreign Head of State
the funeral of a former British Prime Minister

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2J92PEJ - River of Life, opened officially 14th November 1996 by her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent with Warrington Borough Council
The River of Life project was developed in the aftermath of the 1993 IRA bomb in Warrington, which killed two boys - Tim Parry and Jonathan Ball - and injured dozens of people in Warrington City Centre.
The desire was to bring hope, freshness and new life to Bridge Street and the community. A streetscape concept emerged, incorporating every aspect of the urban landscape and its elements including paving, seating units and lighting columns.
Central to the design is a tear shaped water feature. Water emerges from a broken glacial boulder, flows along a bronze channel, whose sides tell the story of creation, in low relief detail, and cascades onto a bronze dome, which bears the imprints of the hands of local school children. The dome is circled by a disk of etched copper that pictures the faces of several children, including Tim and Jonathan.
Inspiration for the River of Life came from the powerful description of waters and the leaves of the trees - for the healing of the nations - described in the biblical book of Revelation. Symbols of brokeness, healing, new life and the passage of time can be seen and discovered throughout this unique artwork.
A symbolic water source is re-created over the full length of the pedestrianised section of Bridge Street. Using natural stone and granite sets, the floor design detail accurately mirrors the meandering course of the River Mersey as it passes through the borough of Warrington. Set into this meandering path are 12 bronze discs, that are part of the Leaves of the Trees project and involved twelve primary schools from the Borough

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XN3D - A pig roast or hog roast is an event or gathering which involves the barbecuing of a whole pig.
Pig roasts, under a variety of names, are a common traditional celebration event in many places including the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Cuba. It is also popular in the United States, especially in the state of Hawaii (a luau) and in the Southern United States (pig pickin'). In Southeast Asia, a pig roast is a staple among the Buddhist, and Christian communities, notably among Catholic Filipinos and Hindu Balinese people, or Buddhist Chinese people.
The tradition of the hog roast goes back millennia and is found in many cultures. There are numerous ways to roast pork, including open fire rotisserie style roasting, and caja china style box grilling. Many families traditionally have a pig roast for Thanksgiving or Christmas.
In the UK, the tradition of pig roasting, more commonly known in the UK as a hog roast, is popular on many occasions, particularly parties and celebrations. It is usually an outdoor event, and a staple meal at many show events. The tradition is to roast either on a spit, turning the pig under a flame, or in a large oven in a roasting pan
roasting pigs around 130 lbs (60 kg) in weight are common in the UK. The pig is normally roasted in a propane gas machine. The pig's skin is scored with a sharp blade and covered in water and salt to make the crackling. In ancient times, going all the way back to the Saxons, roasting a wild boar was often the centerpiece of a meal at Yuletide, with Yule being Freya's feast. The head was often the greatest delicacy, as evidenced by the survival of the Boar's Head Carol.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PYX9BA - Halloween or Hallowe'en (a contraction of Hallows' Even or Hallows' Evening), also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows' Eve, or All Saints' Eve, is a celebration observed in a number of countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows' Day. It begins the three-day observance of Allhallowtide, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed.
It is widely believed that many Halloween traditions originated from ancient Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain
that such festivals may have had pagan roots
and that Samhain itself was Christianized as Halloween by the early Church. Some believe, however, that Halloween began solely as a Christian holiday, separate from ancient festivals like Samhain.
Halloween activities include trick-or-treating (or the related guising), attending Halloween costume parties, carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, divination games, playing pranks, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories, and watching horror films. In many parts of the world, the Christian religious observances of All Hallows' Eve, including attending church services and lighting candles on the graves of the dead, remain popular, although elsewhere it is a more commercial and secular celebration. Some Christians historically abstained from meat on All Hallows' Eve, a tradition reflected in the eating of certain vegetarian foods on this vigil day, including apples, potato pancakes, and soul cakes.

The fountain is vitally important to all real Meenzer (people from Mainz): Every year on 11/11, all people celebrating Carnival in Mainz (fools) gather here when the clock on the balcony of the facing Osteiner Hof (Court of Ostein) strikes 11:11 p.m., which marks the fifth season of Carnival. The carnival is traditionally opened with the announcement of the 11 carnival laws.
The 8.50 metre-high carnival fountain, unveiled in 1967, designed by Blasius Spreng, is a comparatively young monument in Mainz. Nevertheless, you can't imagine it not being in the cityscape. With over 200 figures from carnival and mythology, it is a symbol of typical Mainz joie de vivre

Father Rhine, the monk and the man with the blockhead, the cat, Till Eulenspiegel and the city goddess, Mogontia, the purse scrubber and the paragraph rider. They are all examples of the variety of fantasy motifs that populate the Carnival fountain.
During the 19th century celebrants began using the carnival as an opportunity to mock the military forces occupying the city's fortress. The uniforms of the carnival guards are still reminders of the uniforms of the Austrian, Prussian, and French troops which were present in the town between 1792 and 1866.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DED1KM - The Scottish National Gallery is one of Scotland's top free visitor attractions. It is made up of three interconnected buildings, right in the heart of Edinburgh. The Gallery is home to a major part of Scotland's sensational national collection of fine art
the Academy is one of Europe's premier venues for international exhibitions
and the Gardens Entrance, which lies beneath the two buildings, connects them together with areas for shopping, learning, eating and drinking.
The National Collection
The Gallery houses the national collection of fine art from the early Renaissance to the end of the nineteenth century. Spend an hour strolling around this peaceful setting and you'll find masterpieces from Raphael, El Greco, Velázquez and Rubens to Van Gogh, Monet, Cézanne, Degas and Gauguin. For a nation of Scotland's size, the collection is rightfully regarded as one of the very best in the world. The most comprehensive part of the collection covers the history of Scottish painting. All the major names, including Ramsay, Raeburn, Wilkie and McTaggart, are represented in depth. Works on show include Raeburn's much-loved The Reverend Robert Walker Skating on Duddingston Loch or, as it has become known, the Skating Minister'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8DYKF - The Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II was a multinational celebration throughout 2012 marking the 60th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II to the thrones of seven countries upon the death of her father, King George VI, on 6 February 1952.
She is today queen regnant of 16 sovereign states, 12 of which were British colonies or Dominions at the start of her reign. Queen Victoria, Elizabeth's great-great-grandmother, is the only other monarch in the histories of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and a few other Commonwealth realms to have celebrated a Diamond Jubilee, which she did in 1897.
Many parks and spaces were renamed to celebrate this event, across the UK and the Commonwealth.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 6357454651 - 'A cold evening in Oldham, with the town centre being dug up, a classic back catalog from the early JD &
Warsaw days. What more could you ask for? A special warm up for a unique tour.
Well I saw Joy Division a couple of times, the same number of times I have been to see the memoral to Ian Curtis in Macclesfield. You can be forgiven for expecting a lot.
I have got to say, Hooky and The Light made a good job of it. The Castle reminded me of the Russell Club in Hulme, it just needed lower ceilings. Down to about 7'.
Rowetta was here too. The EP containing unreleased Joy Division track ‘Pictures In My Mind’, ‘Atmosphere’ plus Rowetta’s versions of ‘New Dawn Fades’ and ‘Insight’ are worth a download, see www.fac51thehacienda.com/node/2088
Everything sounded raw, stripped down. Particularly the Closer album tracks, the young folks will only know them with the Hannett gloss of polished production.
Hooky's voice is slightly rough and Mancunian too. He needed some pages of his lyric book. Theres no robotic dancing either, and not so much bass playing. He leaves much to Jack, although rips into it as an axe-man when he gets in the mood. Breaks a string too on the Eccleshall Viking 1 (in Red with Cream Binding), so then it becomes more of a prop.
Rowetta's 'Atmosphere' was a highlight for me. Maybe all along that track needed female vocals.
Overall Hooky did good. He wrote this stuff, its in his soul. Thats why he wants to tour and share it, he is certainly not doing for the cash!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEEG4K - Murals in Northern Ireland have become symbols of Northern Ireland, depicting the region's past and present political and religious divisions.
Belfast and Derry contain arguably the most famous political murals in Europe. It is believed that almost 2,000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. In 2014, the book, The Belfast Mural Guide estimated that, in Belfast, there were approximately 300 quality murals on display, with many more in varying degrees of age and decay. Murals commemorate, communicate and display aspects of culture and history. The themes of murals often reflect what is important to a particular community. A mural therefore exists to express an idea or message and could generally be seen as reflecting values held dear to that community.
In Irish republican areas the themes of murals can range from the 1981 Irish hunger strike, with particular emphasis on strike leader Bobby Sands
murals of international solidarity with revolutionary groups are equally common, as are those which highlight a particular issue, for example the Ballymurphy Massacre or the McGurk's Bar bombing. In working class unionist communities, murals are used to promote Ulster loyalist paramilitary groups such as the Ulster Defence Association and Ulster Volunteer Force and commemorate their deceased members. However traditional themes such as William III of England and the Battle of the Boyne, the Battle of the Somme and the 36th Ulster Division are equally common

Music was always his life. He taught himself to play the guitar and write songs from an early age. Whilst on the tugs Ronnie Wycherley, as he was known then, formed a skiffle group with workmates just for fun, with the tongue in cheek name, 'The Formby Sniffle Groop'.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4083459935 - 'A carved orange pumpkin (Squash) ready for use at the festival of Halloween as a lantern. Lighting provided by a sparker to produce yellow hair.
Pumpkins are commonly carved into decorative lanterns called jack-o'-lanterns for the Halloween season in North America. Throughout Britain and Ireland, there is a long tradition of carving lanterns from vegetables, particularly the turnip, mangelwurzel, or swede.
Not until 1837, however, does jack-o'-lantern appear as a term for a carved vegetable lantern, and the carved lantern does not become associated specifically with Halloween until 1866.
Although every modern chronicle of the holiday repeats the claim that vegetable lanterns were a time-honored component of Halloween celebrations in the British Isles, none gives any primary documentation. In fact, none of the major nineteenth-century chronicles of British holidays and folk customs makes any mention whatsoever of carved lanterns in connection with Halloween. Neither do any of the standard works of the early twentieth century.
In the US, the carved pumpkin was first associated with the harvest season in general, long before it became an emblem of Halloween

Well what else could you post on 11/11?
The Manic Street Preachers are a Welsh alternative rock band, formed in 1986. They are James Dean Bradfield, Nicky Wire, Richey Edwards and Sean Moore. The band are part of the Cardiff music scene, and were at their most prominent during the 1990s. They are colloquially known as 'The Manics' or 'Manics'.
The band were originally a quartet: main lyricist and guitarist Richey Edwards vanished on 1 February 1995. In November 2008, thirteen years after his disappearance, he was officially declared presumed deceased.
The Manics released their debut album, Generation Terrorists in 1992. Their combination of androgynous glam punk imagery, outspoken invective and songs about 'culture, alienation, boredom and despair' soon gained them a loyal following and cult status. The band's later albums retained a leftist politicisation and intellectual lyrical style, while adopting a broader alternative rock sound.
Enigmatic lyricist Richey Edwards gained early notoriety by cutting the words '4REAL' into his arm with a razor blade (narrowly missing an artery and requiring seventeen stitches) in response to the suggestion that the band were less than authentic. The dark nature of 1994's The Holy Bible reflected the culmination of Edwards' instability.
'If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next' is one of the best known tracks by the Manic Street Preachers, released as the first single from their fifth studio album, This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours, with lyrics written by Nicky Wire (credited as Nick Jones), and music written by James Dean Bradfield and Sean Moore.
It was released on 24 August 1998 and became the first of the band's two number one singles in the United Kingdom to date. The song is in the Guinness World Records as the number one single with the longest title without brackets. The song was voted no 20 on Channel 4's 100 Greatest Number One Singles, is the group's biggest success on the Irish singles chart (where it reached no 3), and is the only Manic Street Preachers track ever to be released as a single in the United States.
Various works on the Spanish Civil War were the inspiration for this song, most notably George Orwell's first-hand account, 'Homage to Catalonia.' (one of my favourite authors). Wire has acknowledged that he was also inspired by a song by The Clash, 'Spanish Bombs', which has a similar subject.
In March 2009, it was discovered that the song was used on the website of the British National Party as the soundtrack of an article describing 'the violence, hatred, fragmentation and despair' wrought on London by the 'great multicultural experiment'. The choice of this song was considered ironic by many, considering the song contains lyrics such as 'So if I can shoot rabbits/Then I can shoot fascists'. Record company Sony were successfully able to have the song removed from the site on the grounds of unauthorised use.
The BNP later released a press statement claiming that 'the song had mistakenly been automatically streamed on to its site and had nothing to do with the official party' and that 'you can interpret the lyrics any way you want'.
