Ludlow Castle was probably founded by Walter de Lacy around 1075 as the principal residence, military base and administrative centre of his estates. The earliest enclosure castle was transformed during the twelfth century, when its original gatehouse was enlarged into the Great Tower. The former entrance through the tower was blocked and a new gateway created beside it, producing the keep and approach visible today. The castle later developed into an important aristocratic and royal residence, combining defensive architecture with halls, chambers, service buildings and the unusual circular Chapel of St Mary Magdalene.
Its strategic position near the border with Wales made Ludlow a powerful centre for governing the Marches. During the Wars of the Roses it became associated with the Yorkist dynasty, and from 1473 it was the home of Prince Edward, later Edward V and one of the Princes in the Tower. In the Tudor period the castle served as the headquarters of the Council of the Marches, bringing judges, officials and noble households to Ludlow.
Now preserved as a Grade I listed building and scheduled monument, the ruins illustrate architectural development from the late eleventh to the sixteenth century. For hundreds of years the cathedral held one of the four remaining copies of the original Magna Carta, now securely displayed in Lincoln Castle. The cathedral is the fourth largest in the UK (in floor area) at around 5,000 square metres (54,000 sq ft), after Liverpool, St Paul's and York Minster. Following the Battle of Wakefield, a battle during the Wars of the Roses, the heads of Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York (father of Edward IV and Richard III), Edmund, Earl of Rutland (another son of Richard) and Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury were displayed on Micklegate Bar.
Micklegate Bar once had a barbican or outer gateway in front of it, which became ruinous and was demolished in 1826. The two doorways to the top of the barbican can be seen in the photo above right.
The City Walls Experience at Micklegate Bar (formerly known as the Henry VII Experience), is located in the southern gatehouse.
Micklegate Bar is also referenced in the York Dungeon tourist attraction on Clifford Street, in the Executioner portion of the Dungeon

Queen of Mercia
This sculpture sits by the side of the Manchester Ship Canal at Runcorn. It depicts Aethelfleda, the Mercian princess, as the prow head of a vessel. She is looking in the direction of where the fortification, which she erected at Runcorn c. 914 A.D. to defend Mercia from Vikings, would have been, i.e. in the direction of the railway bridge.
Designed and made by sculptor Phil Bewes who now works with his partner Diane Gorvin. They did other work in the Runcorn area in the 1980's, especially at Norton Priory Museum and Gardens. They are now based in the Forest of Dean area. They have a lovely website at www.bewsgorvin.co.uk

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DD8H4K - Conwy Castle (Welsh: Castell Conwy) is a fortification in Conwy, located in North Wales. It was built by Edward I, during his conquest of Wales, between 1283 and 1289. Constructed as part of a wider project to create the walled town of Conwy, the combined defences cost around £15,000, a huge sum for the period. Over the next few centuries, the castle played an important part in several wars. It withstood the siege of Madog ap Llywelyn in the winter of 1294“95, acted as a temporary haven for Richard II in 1399 and was held for several months by forces loyal to Owain Glyndŵr in 1401.
Following the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642, the castle was held by forces loyal to Charles I, holding out until 1646 when it surrendered to the Parliamentary armies. In the aftermath, the castle was partially slighted by Parliament to prevent it being used in any further revolt, and was finally completely ruined in 1665 when its remaining iron and lead was stripped and sold off. Conwy Castle became an attractive destination for painters in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Visitor numbers grew and initial restoration work was carried out in the second half of the 19th century. In the 21st century, the ruined castle is managed by Cadw as a UNESCO world heritage site tourist attraction.

The distingtive castle or tower design was first used by the Cheltenham Brewery. After the Second World War it acquired the Hereford and Tredegarbreweries becoming the Cheltenham and Herefordbrewery.The original design read Cheltenham & Hereford where it now reads West Country Ales.

The Irish name for Dublin is Baile Atha Cliath “ (pronounced: Ball-ya-Awha-Clia) which means The Town of the Ford of the Reed Hurdles .
Beside the pub is the Father Matthew Bridge crosses the river Liffey. It was at this very spot that the original crossing of the river was located. Here reed matting was positioned on the river bed which enabled travellers to cross safely at low tide.
The Brazen Head is Ireland's oldest pub. In fact there has been a hostelry here since 1198. The present building was built in 1754 as a coaching inn. However The Brazen Head appears in documents as far back as 1653.
An advertisement from the 1750's reads Christopher Quinn of The Brazen Head in Bridge Street has fitted said house with neat accommodations and commodious cellars for said business .

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2C9E2T7 - The Museum of Somerset is located in the 12th-century great hall of Taunton Castle, in Taunton in the county of Somerset, England. The museum is run by South West Heritage Trust, an independent charity and includes objects initially collected by the Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society who own the castle.
Until 2008 the museum was known as the Somerset County Museum. Heritage Lottery Fund support was obtained to improve the museum, and the new museum reopened at the end of September 2011.
Exhibits include the Frome Hoard, the Low Ham Roman Mosaic, the bronze-age South Cadbury shield and a range of other objects relating to the history of the county.
In 1874 the castle was bought by the Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society and between 1899 and 1900 the Great Hall was repaired and refitted as their chief museum space. In 1908-9 the Adam Library was created to house the society's growing collection of books. The society now leases it to Somerset County Council to house the Museum of Somerset. A substantial proportion of the items held by the Museum were originally collected by the Society.
In October 2007, plans for a £6.5 million improvement to the museum and the castle were submitted by Somerset County Council to the Heritage Lottery Fund. It closed to the public on 18 April 2008 for a two-year refit, and reopened as the Museum of Somerset on 29 September 2011. Central to the new museum is the Tree of Somerset, a sculpture carved from oak from the Quantock Hills, which depicts events from Somerset's history

The structures were removed 150 years after this to expose the building from this position.

Few of the present buildings pre-date the Lang Siege of the 16th century, when the medieval defences were largely destroyed by artillery bombardment. The most notable exceptions are St Margaret's Chapel from the early 12th century, which is regarded as the oldest building in Edinburgh,[3] the Royal Palace and the early-16th-century Great Hall, although the interiors have been much altered from the mid-Victorian period onwards. The castle also houses the Scottish regalia, known as the Honours of Scotland and is the site of the Scottish National War Memorial and the National War Museum of Scotland. The British Army is still responsible for some parts of the castle, although its presence is now largely ceremonial.

Robert Louis Stevenson, whose father owned furniture made by Brodie, wrote a play (with W. E. Henley) entitled Deacon Brodie, or The Double Life, which was unsuccessful. However, Stevenson remained fascinated by the dichotomy between Brodie's respectable façade, and his real nature and was inspired to write The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886).[1]
Deacon Brodie is commemorated by a pub of that name on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, on the corner of the Lawnmarket and Bank Street which leads down to The Mound, and a close off the Royal Mile, which contained his family residence and workshops, still bears the name Brodie's Close. A pub in New York City carrying his name sits on the south side of the famous west side 46th Street Restaurant Row between 8th Avenue and 9th Avenue.
In 1997 a TV movie of the same name starring Billy Connolly was made in Edinburgh

Well I saw Joy Division a couple of times, the same number of times I have been to see the memoral to Ian Curtis in Macclesfield. You can be forgiven for expecting a lot.
I have got to say, Hooky and The Light made a good job of it. The Castle reminded me of the Russell Club in Hulme, it just needed lower ceilings. Down to about 7'.
Rowetta was here too. The EP containing unreleased Joy Division track \u2018Pictures In My Mind\u2019, \u2018Atmosphere\u2019 plus Rowetta\u2019s versions of \u2018New Dawn Fades\u2019 and \u2018Insight\u2019 are worth a download, see www.fac51thehacienda.com/node/2088
Everything sounded raw, stripped down. Particularly the Closer album tracks, the young folks will only know them with the Hannett gloss of polished production.
Hooky's voice is slightly rough and Mancunian too. He needed some pages of his lyric book. Theres no robotic dancing either, and not so much bass playing. He leaves much to Jack, although rips into it as an axe-man when he gets in the mood. Breaks a string too on the Eccleshall Viking 1 (in Red with Cream Binding), so then it becomes more of a prop.
Rowetta's 'Atmosphere' was a highlight for me. Maybe all along that track needed female vocals.
Overall Hooky did good. He wrote this stuff, its in his soul. Thats why he wants to tour and share it, he is certainly not doing for the cash!

Stornoway has been settled since at least Viking times although there is archaeological evidence of Neolithic activity in the near vicinity of the town.
King James VI granted ownership of Lewis to the Mackenzies of Kintail in 1610. By about 1680, Lord Seaforth had established his estate house, Seaforth Lodge, on the Gearraidh Chruaidh, an area of rough sheiling ground on the west side of Stornoway harbour. Parts of this original building can still be seen within the stripped out walls of the mezzanine at the rear of the present Castle.
The castle was built in the years 1847-57 as a country house for Sir James Matheson who had bought the whole island a few years previously with his fortune from the Chinese Opium trade. It was designed by the Glasgow architect Charles Wilson.
In 1918, the Lewis estate including the castle was bought by soap industrialist Lord Leverhulme from the Matheson family. He gifted the castle to the people of Stornoway parish in 1923.
During World War II the Castle was taken over as accommodation for air and ground crew of 700 Naval Air Squadron, who operated a detachment of six Supermarine Walrus aircraft from a slipway at Cuddy Point in the Grounds. The base was referred to as HMS Mentor. It was also used for accommodation for students of Lews Castle College in the 1950s.
Today the building is owned by the local council, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (CNES) and is category A listed building.
The rather spooky wicker woman in the grounds of the castle (castle green) was created in July 2010 at the time of the Hebridean Celtic Festival.

The Wicker Woman of Lews Castle looks extra spooky in infra-red. She has now blown down and been recently damaged after many months of gliding through the grounds.
It is a clever nod to the cult classic film 'The Wicker Man' (or the Wickerman) which was set on a fictional Summerisle, a remote Hebridean island famed for its popular and unusually abundant fruit produce. The film stars Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Diane Cilento, Ingrid Pitt, and Britt Ekland. Paul Giovanni composed the soundtrack.
The story centres on the visit of Police Sergeant Howie to the isolated island of Summerisle, in search of a missing girl the locals claim never existed. Howie, a devout Christian, is appalled to find that the inhabitants of the island practise a form of Celtic paganism.
The film was shot almost entirely in the small Scottish towns of Gatehouse of Fleet, Newton Stewart, Kirkcudbright and a few scenes in the village of Creetown in Dumfries and Galloway, as well as Plockton in Ross-shire.
The Wicker Man had moderate success and won first prize in the 1974 Festival of Fantastic Films in Paris, but largely slipped into obscurity. In 1977 the American film magazine Cinefantastique devoted a commemorative issue to the film, asserting that the film is 'the Citizen Kane of horror movies' \u2013 an oft-quoted phrase attributed to this issue

For anyone who has not experienced the many pleasures of Edinburgh city, Calton Hill is just to the east of the New Town in what North americans might call 'downtown'. There are several iconic monuments and buildings on the hill. The National Monument, Nelson's Monument, the Dugald Stewart Monument, the New Parliament House (the Royal High School), the Robert Burns Monument, the Political Martyrs' Monument and the Edinburgh City Observatory. Originally the Royal High School was earmarked for the site of the future Scottish Assembly. The new modern building is now at the foot of the hill at Holyrood.
The hill was owned by hill from Lord Balmerino until 1724 and what a view he must have had!

Visable from across the city, Calton Hill is the venue for events at various times in the year. The Beltane Fire Festival every April (30th of the month) each year is popular and generally attracts over 10,000 people.. This is a revival of the ancient Celtic May Day festival of Beltane. The Dussehra Hindu Festival has also been held the last few years in early October.
On the hill are a number of interesting structures. These include Governors House, the original site of Calton Jail, the National Monument, Nelson's Monument, the Dugald Stewart Monument, the New Parliament House (the Royal High School), the Robert Burns Monument, the Political Martyrs' Monument and the City Observatory. It is worth a walk up to it from Princes St. Follow the confusingly named Calton Hill lane up from the shopping centre.

Taken here between Christmas and New Year on the night of Hogmanay, the snow and ice of December give it a nice lightness, even at dusk. This is the calm before the storm as the party starts in Princes St and the gardens as the stage fires up to welcome in the new years celebrations. 2009 2010 2011 2012. Everyone needs a street party ticket and a wristband to enter the city arena area, unlike many years ago when it was a bit more easy going. Now there is a midnight torchlight procession from Parliament Square via the historic Lothian Edinburgh Royal Mile to the Son et Lumi\u00e9re and fireworks finale on Calton Hill. On Edinburg new years day the the loony dook is the place to take a swim at South Queensferry in the river Forth in the shadow of the Forth Railway Bridge over to Fife.
Edinburgh Castle is a castle fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, from its position atop the volcanic Castle Rock. Human habitation of the site is dated back as far as the 9th century BC, although the nature of early settlement is unclear. There has been a royal castle here since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until the Union of the Crowns in 1603.
As one of the most important fortresses in the Kingdom of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle has been involved in many historical conflicts, from the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century, up to the Jacobite Rising of 1745, and has been besieged, both successfully and unsuccessfully, on several occasions. From the later 17th century, the castle became a military base, with a large garrison. Its importance as a historic monument was recognised from the 19th century, and various restoration programmes have been carried out since.
Few of the present buildings pre-date the Lang Siege of the 16th century, when the medieval fortifications were largely destroyed by artillery bombardment. The notable exception is St Margaret's Chapel, the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh, which dates from the early 12th century. Among other significant buildings of the castle are the Royal Palace, and the early-16th-century Great Hall. The castle also houses the Scottish National War Memorial, and National War Museum of Scotland.

Alnwick Castle guards a road crossing the River Aln. Yves de Vescy, Baron of Alnwick, erected the first parts of the castle in about 1096.[5] Beatrix de Vesci, daughter of Yves de Vescy married Eustace Fitz John, Constable of Chestershire and Knaresborough. By his marriage to Beatrix de Vesci he gained the Baronies of Malton and Alnwick. The castle was first mentioned in 1136 when it was captured by King David I of Scotland. At this point it was described as very strong. It was besieged in 1172 and again in 1174 by William the Lion, King of Scotland and William was captured outside the walls during the Battle of Alnwick. It is not an administrative building but a civic suite, Lord Mayor's parlour and Council chamber
local government administration is centred at the nearby Municipal Buildings. The town hall was built between 1749 and 1754 to a design by John Wood the Elder replacing an earlier town hall nearby. An extension to the north designed by James Wyatt was added in 1785. Following a fire in 1795 the hall was largely rebuilt and a dome designed by Wyatt was built. Minor alterations have subsequently been made. The streets surrounding its site have altered since its initiation, notably when viewed from Castle Street, the south-side, it appears as off-centre. This is because Water Street which ran to the junction with Dale Street, the west-east axis, was continuous and built up across the junction so that the Town Hall was not visible originally from that aspect. The structures were removed 150 years after this to expose the building from this position.

The Kirk of the Canongate, or Canongate Kirk, serves the Parish of Canongate in Edinburgh's Old Town, in Scotland. It is a congregation of the Church of Scotland.
The parish includes the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Scottish Parliament. It is also the parish church of Edinburgh Castle, even though the castle is detached from the rest of the parish. The wedding of Zara Phillips, the Queen's granddaughter, and Mike Tindall, took place at the church on 30 July 2011
