Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWDK0A - Bettys and Taylors of Harrogate, also known as Bettys and Taylors Group Limited, is a family company based in Yorkshire, England. The company's brands are Bettys (with no apostrophe), Taylors of Harrogate (also with no possessive apostrophe), and Yorkshire Tea. Bettys Café Tea Rooms are traditional tea rooms serving traditional meals with influences from both Switzerland and Yorkshire. the owners of Bettys acquired Taylors in 1962. The chairman of the company is Clare Morrow, a former journalist.
In 1986 Bettys by Post was developed, initially a mail-order company, but later moving online. In 2001 Bettys opened a cookery school on the same site as their craft bakery, at Plumpton Park near Harrogate.
Bettys marked their 90th anniversary in July 2009 with afternoon tea of patisseries, fancies and cakes from the past served by waitresses dressed in period costumes

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD243H - This image shows the exterior window display and signage of Sandgate Coffee, an independent takeaway coffee shop located on Sandgate in the historic seaside town of Whitby, North Yorkshire. The hand-painted sign describes the café as the Home of the Whitby Fatties, a local variation of the traditional Yorkshire Fat Rascals cake, a rich baked treat associated with the region.
The shop window features a colourful and decorative cake display in shades of pink, designed to attract passing visitors and highlight the café's baking theme. A clear notice indicates that the business operates on a takeaway-only basis, reflecting the small footprint typical of many independent food outlets in Whitby's busy tourist streets.
Whitby is well known for its strong food heritage, including jet jewellery, seafood, and regional baking traditions. Small cafés such as Sandgate Coffee contribute to the town's appeal as a destination for food tourism, offering locally themed specialities alongside everyday refreshments.
The photograph documents a detail of Whitby's independent retail and food culture, capturing how local identity and traditional recipes are used to create distinctive offerings within a popular tourist town.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BCTGXG - Stockport Town Hall is a building in Stockport, England, that houses government and administrative functions. It was designed by architect Sir Alfred Brumwell Thomas who had previously designed Belfast City Hall. Stockport Town Hall was designated a Grade II listed building in 1975,[1] upgraded to Grade II* in September 2007.[2]
It was opened by the then Prince and Princess of Wales in July 1908. To commemorate the Royal visit, part of Heaton Lane, a main shopping street in the town, was renamed Prince's Street.[3][4][5]
Council and committee meetings take place during the evening in three oak-panelled committee rooms and in a traditional Council Chamber. The chamber has elaborate plasterwork, brass chandeliers and decorative carvings on oak benches. The civic collection of silver, some of which dates from the 15th century, lines the wall of the corridor outside the chamber. Stockport Town Hall is a licensed Wedding venue. Weddings and receptions are a frequent occurrence at the Town Hall.
An imposing Italian marble entrance leads to the Edwardian Ballroom, which former poet laureate Sir John Betjeman described as magnificent. This contains a Wurlitzer organ formerly installed in Manchester's Paramount Theatre and moved to Manchester's Free Trade Hall in 1977 subsequently being moved to Stockport Town Hall and being opened at Stockport in late 1999. The Wurlitzer, a 'Publix 1' was one of only sixteen of its kind in the world and was designed by the American Theatre Organist Jesse Crawford for the accompaniment of silent films. The Manchester Paramount instrument was unique in being the only one to be exported to a theatre outside the United States. The organ has been fully overhauled and the old relays have been replaced with digital technology. Various changes to the organ's original specification have been carried out throughout its life both in the theatre and its subsequent homes. The organ was installed and is owned by the Lancastrian Theatre Organ Trust

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RK9X6K - Patisserie Valerie is a chain of cafés that operates in the United Kingdom. The chain specialises in cakes, and its menu included continental breakfasts, lunches and teas and coffees. The company went into administration in January 2019, prior to a management buyout funded by Causeway Capital Partners.
According to Helene (Leni) Vermeirsch, the niece of the founders, Patisserie Valerie was first opened in 1926 on the corner of Dean Street and Old Compton Street in Soho, London by Esther van Gyseghem, born in Ostende, Belgium on 22 April 1900 and her husband Theophile (Theo) Vermeirsch. There is not known to have been a Valerie in the founders' families, but Esther came to be referred to as Madame Valerie.
The chain has expanded rapidly since 2006, growing from eight shops in 2006 to 192 as of May 2017. It opened its first shop in the Republic of Ireland in 2017, in Debenhams in Blanchardstown Centre.
In April 2014 the company announced plans to raise £33m on the London Alternative Investment Market, using the sum to reduce its debt.
Trading in the shares of Patisserie Holdings, the parent company of Patisserie Valerie, were suspended on 10 October 2018 following the discovery of potentially fraudulent accounting irregularities, which had led to the possibility that there had been a material mis-statement of the company's accounts.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DB6PFF - Ave Maria Missionaries of Charity Office Liverpool
The Missionaries of Charity in Liverpool offer hospitality to the homeless community. Volunteers assist the work of the Missionaries of Charity in giving out food. After the clients finish their food they often have another cup of tea and a cake and then start to disperse. The volunteers then wash up the dishes, sweep and mop the floor and clean the tables. Some volunteers go around the dining-room and pour out tea for people. On occasion a client may be drunk and become somewhat agitated
on these occasions the nuns step in and sort out the situation. Whilst it can be quite daunting going into the Missionaries of Charity soup-kitchen' at first, volunteers often say they become more confident as the weeks go on, and look forward to returning week after week.

thus, Bishnoi translates as Twenty-niners. 29 is also the number of suras in the Qur'an that begin with muqatta'at.

I have been a regular customer of Ron (of Ron Snax, Outside catering available 01827-706191) for some time. The mis-spelt pricelist notwithstanding (Turkcy), he does a cracking job. \u00a32.40 buys you a bagette the size of two fists, packed with fried goodness. My only gripe is that he doesn't do black pudding, but that has never stopped me calling there. His litre of steaming tea or coffee also blows Costa away.
Rons does barms and soft bagettes. It always amazes me how short a distance you need to travel, for bread names to change so dramatically. It could be a bread-cake, teacake (obviously without fruit), a sub, barm, breadbun, cob, stotty, scone, buttery, flour cake or muffin. Using the wrong one can lead to a lot of confusion. Any more bread styles you know from across Britain, please leave a comment and let me know.
The old 'Greasy Spoon' in my opinion gets an unfair press. Wikipedia defines it as:
'Greasy spoon is a colloquial or slang term used in Britain, Ireland and North America for small, especially cheap, archetypal working class restaurants or diners. The name 'greasy spoon' is used to imply a less-than-rigorous approach to hygiene and dishwashing, and appears in use in the early 20th century'.
There have been a few stories, mainly hoaxes based on ficticious EU reports about eating habits of long distance drivers and their health. As any truck driver knows, the greatest hazard is infact 'Truck drivers testicle' caused by vibrations encountered over time from sitting over the tractor unit engine.
Thankfully, Rons position appears safe, although he did tell me that a new rating system is apparently coming in. So look out for his star rating, next time you are on the A46. Tell him HotpixUK sent you!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWDK0D - Batger and Co Confectionery follows along with the theme of rationing, explored previously in the walking tour. The confectionery manufacturer was established in East London in 1748 by Miss Elizabeth Batger. The Batger family were leading sugar refiners in Britain and by the early-twentieth century became the largest jam and confectionery makers. Batger's had multiple factories, but the main factory was located on Broad Street in Stephany, which manufactured jams, bakery assortments, sweets and toffee. However, their most popular products were Chinese figs, Silmos Lollies, Jersey Caramels and John Peel marmalade, which were marketed to the public using imaginative and entertaining advertisements.
During the First World War, Batger's supplied the British army with jam. However, by 1940 the Stephany factory had been destroyed by bombing, forcing the company to move outside London's city core to 44 Clapham, Common South Side. The Clapham factory was known for producing Harlequin Christmas Crackers and cake decorations. In 1970, the company was acquired by Needlers Ltd., a confectionery manufacturer, which led to the closing of the Clapham factory a year later. Needlers Ltd. was later sold to Ashbury Confectionery Ltd. The last original Batger products were discontinued in 2000. For convenience, this tour will visit the Batger factory that was located at 566 Cable Street, which is currently an arts studio.
