Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MKF8NX - Gerard Winstanley House which was formerly the towns magistrates court and police station but is now the home of a multi-arts thriving creative community.
It is a Grade II listed building dating back to around 1887 and of course, the first thing that hits you is the brickwork. The official records describe it as red brick in Flemish bond with sandstone dressings and a slate roof.
The buildings stand on Crawford Street opposite the small little garden that belongs to the Parish Church of All Saints and it really does cut a very imposing figure from a seat in that garden.
But the dramatic architecture doesn't stop there - not only do we have the amazing red brickwork and intricate dressings, but we have towers and turrets too! The spiked tower at the bottom end of Crawford Street rises high above the brickwork pointing right up to the often dark skies above.
This is where the main entrance to the courts was, its large welcoming doorway still a big feature of the facade. The symmetry and absolute craftsmanship of the building never fail to impress
These days the courts and police station have long gone, updated and replaced elsewhere in the town and everyone wondered what might happen to this magnificent building.
Would it go to rack and ruin like so many other buildings in the town, or would there be new life breathed into it, would it get a second chance?
The answer was firmly YES as the building was purchased and occupied by The Old Courts who have transformed the place and have refurbished the interior (still an ongoing project) to provide Art Galleries, a Theatre, a Live Music venue, a Cafe, a Record store, Band rehearsal rooms, Conference and Events space and even a bar.
Bailiff Bar is at the very bottom of the building around the corner from Crawford Street and on to King Street West.

It was laid out for residences around 1780 and named after Jonas Bold, a noted sugar trader and banker. In 1802 Bold became Mayor of Liverpool.
Merchants that worked on the docks needed houses close by. Therefore, houses were constructed in Hanover Street first, followed by Duke Street and then Bold Street. The fields that were in the area earlier were also developed quickly into houses. Although there had been port-related industrial activity in the area, with roperies occupying the site of what is now Bold Street to supply the sailing ships, this intensified along with a demand for residential properties so that the merchants could be located close to their business interests.

Markets have been continually evolving for centuries, and the early 2000's saw the rise of online shopping, supermarkets and discount stores creating challenges for Crewe's General Market.
The Market Hall building needed investment to make it suitable for 21st-century shopping habits, in order to support a wide community of small businesses.
Crewe market has recently undergone major redevelopment works to breathe fresh life into this historic building. The historic Shambles units have been sympathetically restored, using heritage colours and materials to celebrate the market's history, while making it fit for an exciting future.
In May 2021, Crewe Market reopened, home to an exciting selection of independent businesses offering street food, fresh food and retail goods.

Situated to the north of the city centre on Hunts Bank, close to Manchester Cathedral, it adjoins Manchester Arena which was constructed on part of the former station site in the 1990s. Opened in 1844 and part of the Manchester station group, Victoria is Manchester's third busiest railway station after Piccadilly and Oxford Road and the second busiest station managed by Northern after Oxford Road.
The station hosts local and regional services to destinations in Northern England, such as Blackburn, Rochdale, Bradford, Leeds, Newcastle, Huddersfield, Halifax, Wigan, Southport, Blackpool (Sundays only) and Liverpool using the original Liverpool to Manchester line. Most trains calling at Victoria are operated by Northern. TransPennine Express services call at the station from Liverpool to Newcastle/Scarborough and services towards Manchester Airport (via the Ordsall Chord) from Middlesbrough/Redcar/Newcastle.
Manchester Victoria is a major interchange for the Metrolink light rail system. Two former railway lines into the station have been converted to tram operation: the line to Bury was converted in the early 1990s, in the first phase of Metrolink construction, and the line through Oldham to Rochdale was converted during 2009?2014. In the other direction, trams switch to on-street running when they emerge from Victoria Station and continue southwards through the city centre to Piccadilly or Deansgate-Castlefield.

the original lights and pull-down awnings (still working).
The square, Art Deco, rendered panel (?1931') is as it was originally. The signage (Soap &
Suds, etc) is modern but in a font in keeping with the age of the building.
Unit 6, originally the butcher's department of the Co-op and now a tattoo parlour ? has a
set-back doorway (the others in the block flush) but no awning like the others. At the back
of the shop are the original butcher's rails. The plate glass is the original Co-op shop
glass.
In Unit 4, originally the cooked meats department with uphill neighbour Hong Kong
takeaway and now R&R books, the central black and white tiled flooring is original.

During November 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced the InterCity West Coast franchise would be replaced by the West Coast Partnership (WCP). In August 2019, the DfT awarded the WCP franchise to the First Trenitalia consortium. On 8 December 2019, Avanti West Coast took over operations from the prior operating company Virgin Trains, which had run the franchise since 1997. Originally, the franchise was initially scheduled to run until March 2030, and had also been set to operate the initial High Speed 2 services from 2026. However, during December 2020, it was announced that First Trenitalia and the DfT had agreed to terminate the WCP franchise at the earlier date of 31 March 2026 as part of the abolition of the franchise system. Since then a number of contract changes have taken place due to COVID-19 and then poor performance by the company. As of March 2023, the company's contract will expire in October 2023.
Between 14 August and 18 September 2022, Avanti West Coast reduced its timetable, citing unofficial strike action from its employees. However, this allegation was disputed by Aslef, which accused the company of lying and blamed their lack of recruitment, especially of train drivers, for the problems. Trains were running at one service per hour on the majority of routes, as opposed to the three which would typically occur on the London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly route. History
The name Lymm, of Celtic origins, means a place of running water and is likely derived from an ancient stream that ran through the village centre. The village appears as Limme in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Lymm was an agricultural village until the Industrial Revolution, which brought the Bridgewater Canal and the Warrington and Altrincham Junction Railway to the village. The village played a prominent role within the salt extraction industry, gold beating industry and cotton industry (many of its inhabitants were fustian cutters).
Lymm Heritage Centre, which opened in June 2017, is in the centre of the village on Legh Street. It hosts exhibitions related to local history as well as activities for schools and visitors.
Morris dancing was taking place in Lymm as early as 1817, often appearing in the village at Rushbearing time throughout the Victorian era. Morris dancing[7] continues to feature within the village with Lymm Morris dancers frequently performing during Rushbearing and at the various annual village festivals including the Lymm May Queen Festival, Lymm Festival and Lymm Dickensian Festival.
In 2017, Lymm was voted as one of the 'Best Places to Live' according to The Times and The Sunday Times list. In 2023, the village was voted as one of Britains 'Most Desirable Towns' according to The Daily Telegraph

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2CB00B3 - By the middle of the 15th century the population of the town had increased to about 1,300 people and, even though travelling was hard, Warrington's markets and fairs were known far and near. The lanes around the market became so crowded with stalls and animals that an open space had to be made in the north west corner of the crossroads. On early maps this was called the ?forum', and later the ?corn market'.
The rights to collect tolls on these markets and fairs remained with the barons of Warrington, and later with the lords of the manor, until 1856 when the new corporation bought them from John Ireland Blackburne, the then Lord of the Manor.
The Victorian market
Three years later the Warrington Improvement and Market Act said the corporation could hold and maintain a market, and could also to build on any land purchased under the powers of the Act, or on any land forming part of any street. The buildings were market houses and places for the sale of cattle, hay and other articles.
After much debate a new market hall for meat traders was built in 1856, which was an impressive brick and stone building.
It was extended in 1873, adding a cast iron-framed fish market hall. Later, a glass-roofed general market hall was built on land behind the Barley Mow Inn.
The market in the 1960s-1970s
By the late 1960s, the Victorian market halls had become outdated and they couldn't meet the modern standards of health and hygiene. It was impossible to build a new market around the old without stopping trading for a long time.
When Warrington became a New Town, the town centre was redeveloped and the market was moved to Bank Street, where it would provide a counterbalance to the new Golden Square shopping centre.
The new market was designed on three levels, based on the natural fall of the ground, meaning that each floor came out at ground level. It gave service access to the back of shops on Bridge Street via a tunnel from the basement.

The huge image of 22 Manchester worker bees has been emblazoned on a wall on the side of the Koffee Pot building in the heart of the Northern Quarter.
Each bee, pictured swarming around a honey heart, represents one of the innocent people killed in the horrific attack.
It has been completed over last weekend by graffiti artist Russell Meeham , also know as ?Qubek'. As word spread about the work of art taking shape people came past to see what he was doing. When the last bee was competed it drew a round of applause.

Two days after the attack, Russ painted the old toilet block in Stevenson Square with bees and two hands joined together in a heart.
It prompted the M.E.N to commission him to create the mural.
Working from atop a cherry picker armed with dozens of cans of spray paint and some music, Russ spent two days creating his masterpiece.
Cafe bosses have previously turned down all requests for it to be used for a mural but kindly agreed to this one.
Speaking as he worked on his mammoth tribute Russ said: It's simple but effective, without being too morbid. Everyone will know why we've painted it and it's nice to have been involved in the project.

I did a piece following the bombing to put a positive message out there to represent the community in Manchester and a tribute to those who lost their lives that wasn't too morbid.
It got people talking and, from what I saw, brightened a lot of people's days.

During the 1990s 'Madchester Summer of Love' period, when local bands like the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and Inspiral Carpets were at the height of their popularity

On 31 March 2008, Affleck's Palace ceased trading. It re-opened on 1 April 2008 as Afflecks under new management. Afflecks is now managed by Mancunian property developer Bruntwood after the expiry of a 25-year lease in 2007. It had been previously suggested that Bruntwood would redevelop the building, possibly leading to its closure as a market, with many traders having feared that closure would be likely and that notice could have been given as soon as the end of January

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PM626A - St George's Market is the last surviving Victorian covered market in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It is located on May Street, close to the River Lagan and the Waterfront Hall. Belfast Corporation (now Belfast City Council) commissioned the building of St George's Market, which was built in three phases between 1890 and 1896. Before 1890 St George's Market was an open market and most likely contained a slaughterhouse and a meat market. Today it is a thriving market with 300 traders, crafters, musicians, and food vendors.
By the 1980s, St George's Market had developed into a general market and it became the last of Belfast's thriving Victorian markets. The market was pressured with increased maintenance costs and changes to hygiene regulations, among other issues, and Belfast City Council decided to source other uses for the listed building. A campaign backed by the city council, traders and the general public resulted in a Heritage Lottery Fund-backed ?3.5 million refurbishment programme assisted by the Environment and Heritage Agency. Brick and stonework that had badly deteriorated was returned to good condition, and special bricks were produced in England to match the original unusually sized bricks. The fully renovated St George's Market reopened its doors on 14 May 1999.
St George's Market is primarily used as a market, however a number of other events are held at the site. These range from food festivals, art initiatives, exhibitions, charity launches, fashion shoots and live music events. Local software company Northbrook Technology hold their annual Staff Christmas Party at the venue.
The market has won a number of recent awards, including being voted Best Large Indoor Market 2014 and as one of the UK's top five markets by the National Association of British Market Authorities in 2006, and winning third place in the best markets category of the Observer Food Monthly/Waitrose Awards in 2004

Consisting of an 11-storey office tower, and an In-Shops indoor market on the ground and first floors. Full of tacky clothes shops, greasy spoon cafes, amusement arcades and stalls where you can get a new drive belt for your vacuum cleaner. You get the picture.
Amazingly it is part of a grand scheme to gut the building completely, extend the office tower to a whopping 32-storeys, add a smaller 16-storey one for good measure and repackage it as a state of the art multi-use complex. This was all reported in the Evening Times in 2009, but sadly you can still buy a processed burger in the Savoy Centre.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG39NX - Early in his career, in 1896, Mackintosh met Catherine Cranston (widely known as Kate Cranston or simply Miss Cranston), an entrepreneurial local business woman who was the daughter of a Glasgow tea merchant and a strong believer in temperance.
The temperance movement was becoming increasingly popular in Glasgow at the turn of the century and Miss Cranston had conceived the idea of a series of art tearooms, venues where people could meet to relax and enjoy non-alcoholic refreshments in a variety of different rooms within the same building. This proved to be the start of a long working relationship between Miss Cranston and Mackintosh. Between 1896 and 1917 he designed and re-styled interiors in all four of her Glasgow tearooms, often in collaboration with his wife Margaret MacDonald.
Mackintosh's redesigned external facade was a carefully considered asymmetric, abstractly modelled composition with shallow curves on some areas of the surface, and varying depths of recesses to windows and the main entrance. The composition respected the urban context of the neighbouring buildings, matching the major cornice lines and heights of adjoining buildings, whilst still exploring emerging ideas of Art Nouveau and the modern movement.
The ground floor entrance door is placed far to the left of a wide band of fenestration, both of which are recessed below the first-floor level, the location of the Room de Luxe. To emphasise the importance of this room, Mackintosh designed a full width bay window, projecting the facade outwards with a gentle curve. The two storeys above this featured a more regular pattern of fenestration with three individual windows per floor, recessed to different degrees. The asymmetry of the composition was continued by widening the left side windows and creating another gentle curve in this part of the facade, extending through both storeys. This repeated the curved form of the first floor and emphasised the heavily recessed entrance to the building

Caf?? Rouge was founded by Roger Myers and Karen Jones, in Richmond, London as a small restaurant chain in 1989. As the brand grew, Myers and Jones incorporated the chain into a larger restaurant group: the Pelican Group. In July 1996, Whitbread purchased Pelican Group - comprising 110 restaurants under the D??me, Mamma Amalfi and, primarily, Caf?? Rouge brands - for ?133m
The restaurant chain gained much exposure after frequently being mentioned in the 1996 novel Bridget Jones's Diary, with the main character Bridget Jones (and her friends) visiting her local branch of the restaurant regularly throughout the novel.[4]
In May 2002, Whitbread sold Pelican to Tragus Group in a management buy-in for ?25m.[5]
In 2009, Caf?? Rouge began a partnership with the Gourmet Society, offering their members discounts on production of a Gourmet Society restaurant discount card.
In February 2011, Caf?? Rouge introduced a new fast-service format to the brand. Caf?? Rouge Express at London Euston railway station and Southampton's WestQuay shopping centre, aims to reduce customer waiting time and the reduced menu range is available to eat in or take away.
In 2012, it was reported that Caf?? Rouge intended investing in excess of ?20m refurbishing its restaurants over the next few years, starting with the Hampstead branch. Created by Afroditi Krassa, the new design is inspired by classic but urban Parisian bistros, whilst remaining sensitive to the essence of the original Caf?? Rouge. The design will be rolled out across 125 restaurants within three years, with interiors tailored to each site.
In September 2012, Caf?? Rouge joined the Nectar loyalty card reward scheme as a redemption partner.

Bentley Motors Limited is a British manufacturer of automobiles founded on my birthday, 18th January 1919 by Walter Owen Bentley (known as W.O. Bentley or just 'W.O.').
Bentley had been previously known for his range of rotary aero-engines in World War I, the most famous being the Bentley BR1 as used in later versions of the Sopwith Camel. Since 1998, the company has been owned by the Volkswagen Group of Germany and is located in Crewe, south Cheshire.
Before World War I, W.O. Bentley had been in partnership with his brother H.M. Bentley selling French DFP cars, but he had always wanted to design and build his own range of cars bearing his name. In August 1919, Bentley Motors Ltd. was registered, and a chassis with dummy engine was exhibited at the London Motor Show in October of that year.
It was on a visit to the DFP factory in 1913 that W.O. noticed an aluminium paperweight, and had the inspired idea of using the lightweight metal instead of cast iron to make engine pistons. The first Bentley aluminium pistons went into service in aero engines for the Sopwith Camel during the Great War.
A group of wealthy British motorists known as the 'Bentley Boys' (Woolf Barnato, Sir Henry Birkin, steeplechaser George Duller, aviator Glen Kidston, automotive journalist S.C.H. 'Sammy' Davis, and Dr. Dudley Benjafield among them) kept the marque's reputation for high performance alive. Thanks to the dedication to serious racing of this group, the company, located at Cricklewood, north London, was noted for its four consecutive victories at the 24 hours of Le Mans from 1927 to 1930. Their greatest competitor at the time, Bugatti\u2014whose lightweight, elegant, but fragile creations contrasted with the Bentley's rugged reliability and durability\u2014referred to them as 'the world's fastest lorries'.
The one pictured here looks like a 1929 model, possibly 3-6 litre engine.

She does a really comprehensive breakfast selection including my favourite black (blood) pudding. The \u00a33.30 belly buster (thats barely 3 Euros 60, what are you waiting for, get over to Roman Northwich, in that damn chunnel, swap those croisants and churros for some proper breakfast!!!). A large batch filled with two bacon, one sausage, egg, tomatoes, mushroom, black pudding and cheese. Theres also version for the Atkins (low carb) generation and our vegetarian bretheren.
You can choose your own bread (thankfully not the identikit bread at the Subway franchise further into town), but your choice from a whole raft of types. Fillings cover all tastes from plain turkey salad to Feta &
Pesto, Brie and Cranberry, roasted vegatables, smoked and cream cheese.
When drooling at the menu I realised there was only one ingredient missing, chilli pepper. If you are craving it they do a mean baked potato with chilli. What are you waiting for, if you are within a 3 mile radius of the shop in Condate, get your 'belly buster' ordered - 01606-42777 / 07770-452708

It has its origins across the road from where it now stands back in 1826. It was known then for its Oysters, one of the rare foods I have given up trying to enjoy, they are just not for me. Local architect Robert Paterson is responsible for its parisian style and its a great step back to victorian gin palace times, a bit like the Phil in Liverpool ( www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3804831303/ ).
On the menu today was a lovely tomato based fish soup, Moules (Mussels to you), mixed starters to share, pork in cider, although the homemade sandwiches and burgers in there are also really nice. i had the fish soup followed by a really good Cranachan (a local Scots desert with double cream, oats and raspberries), try it if you get the chance, naughty but nice!

The Sanctuary cafe is between the library and Brookfield Roads' United Reformed Church (Thomas Risley Church) and can be reached from either. Its thankfully christian with a small c, even nicer when you grew up as a card carrying fallen catholic like myself.
They are usually open from about 9.30am where a fresh bacon butty (or Lymm folk may well call them Bacon Sarnies - I dont know) is a good way to start the day. They will toast it too if you ask. There is a corner for kids to play if you have a small one in tow. Lawrence the gaffer does a good job and the volunteers will always go that extra mile for you.

It contains mostly bars and clubs, including a Hard Rock Cafe as well as a leisure centre and a 23-screen Odeon cinema, (formerly the Filmworks), incorporating an IMAX 3D screen. The Printworks was also home to the Hard Rock Casino in Manchester until it closed in 2006.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K69A4H - Gloucester Services are a pair of Motorway Service Areas (MSA) serving the northbound and southbound carriageways of the M5 between Junction 11A and Junction 12, near Whaddon, Gloucester. It specialises in selling artisanal food, and does not offer outlets for popular chain food brands.
Construction of the northbound services began in early 2013, and they officially opened on 7 May 2014. Construction of the southbound services commenced in March 2014 and they opened on 19 May 2015
In September 2009, the independent motorway services operator Westmorland Motorway Services Ltd, jointly with a local charitable trust, Gloucestershire Gateway Trust, submitted plans for a service area at Matson for public consultation. The plans were for a business operated in a similar manner to Tebay Services on the M6 in Cumbria, with much of the food and produce on sale being sourced from local suppliers
The operator promised not to host chain coffee shops, fast-food outlets, or video and gambling machines
The service area supports the Gloucestershire Gateway Trust in assisting the business to provide good jobs for more deprived areas of Gloucester, and to support local social regeneration schemes.
The 2019 Motorway Services User Survey found that Gloucester's southbound side was in the top five motorway services in the UK for customer satisfaction
The District Council was informed at the end of February 2011 that Roadchef and Welcome Break (the operators of Strensham and Michaelwood service stations) had applied to the High Court for a judicial review of the Council's decision to grant planning permission. Joined in the action were CAMSA and the Parish Councils of Brookthorpe-with-Whaddon and Harescombe. The case was heard in the High Court in Birmingham on 17 and 18 January 2012. By 8 February 2012, the High Court had dismissed all challenges to the planning application

The IFI presents film festivals, retrospectives and curated seasons, along with independent, Irish and foreign language films overlooked by commercial multiplexes at its cinemas in the Temple Bar quarter of Dublin. It maintains an archive of Irish films and provides education in film culture.
The IFI increases the range of films available to Irish audiences. New releases, national seasons, directors' retrospectives, thematic programmes, festivals, and special events have been regular features of the programme. Every year, the IFI rewards its audiences by hosting an Open Day, with free cinema screenings and tours. In 2011, the IFI was awarded Dublin's Best Cinema in Dublin Living Awards. In its first two decades the IFI saw over 3.1 million cinema attendances to see 63,000 screenings of over 5,900 different films. The IFI Caf?? The building dates back to around 1862 when a local brewery, the McKenna Brothers, built it as the flagship pub of their operation. It was called the George and Dragon
the first licence on the site was granted to Elizabeth March in 1803. No-one knows when music started to be played at the venue but market pubs were well known for their musical connections, and the nearby Smithfield Markets and textile factories ensured that this was a bustling area with many musicians and buskers. Manchester was then at its height as the first industrial city at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution.
The 'Band on the Wall' was a nickname from the 1930s when the landlord of the time Ernie Tyson placed a stage high on the far wall of the pub on which the musicians played. A regular band of two accordions, piano, drums, a singer and occasionally a saxophone would play.
In 1975 local jazz musician Steve Morris and his business partner Frank Cusick bought the George & Dragon with the idea of turning it into a jazz club
a conversation with Johnny Roadhouse convinced them to name it the Band on the Wall. Jazz musicians from the local area as well as international artist played at the club. The late 1970s saw the emergence of a new sound, punk, and it was at the Band on the Wall that many of the Manchester punk bands played
Band on the Wall is operated by Inner City Music Ltd, a registered charity. The organisation was awarded ?3.2 million in July 2007, in combined awards by Arts Council England and the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of a ?4 million project to transform the venue into a 21st-century centre for music.
The Band on the Wall was refurbished before reopening on 25 September 2009 with a performance by the venue's patrons Julian Joseph and Mica Paris
On 18 June 2018, Inner City Music Ltd announced that Arts Council England had approved ?1.65 million stage two Capital funding
