Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CJDPMY - This photograph shows the bronze statue of Victoria Wood, located in Kay Gardens in Bury town centre, Greater Manchester. The sculpture commemorates one of Britain's most respected and influential comedians, writers, and performers, who was born in Bury in 1953 and remained closely associated with northern English culture throughout her career.
Victoria Wood was widely celebrated for her sharply observed humour, original songs, and television work, including sketch shows and plays that portrayed everyday British life with warmth, intelligence, and social insight. Her comedy often drew on working class experiences, particularly those of women, and she became a defining voice in British television and stage comedy from the late 1970s onwards.
The statue depicts Wood in a relaxed, approachable pose, dressed in a long coat and smiling, with hands slightly raised as if mid-conversation. This informal stance reflects her reputation for observational humour and her ability to connect directly with audiences. Cast in bronze, the sculpture blends traditional public memorial form with a contemporary, accessible style, reinforcing her status as both a cultural figure and a local icon.
Set within a small landscaped garden space, with trees and surrounding buildings visible in the background, the statue forms part of Bury's civic landscape and serves as a point of pride for the town. Taken in natural daylight, the image documents a permanent tribute to Victoria Wood's lasting contribution to British comedy, northern cultural identity, and the wider performing arts.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CJDPN3 - A freestanding sign promoting Chadwick's Original Bury Black Puddings at Bury Market Hall in Greater Manchester. The sign advertises both hot and cold black pudding, reflecting the everyday, practical nature of market food retail and the enduring popularity of this traditional Lancashire product.
Bury is nationally synonymous with black pudding, a food deeply rooted in northern English working-class food culture and historic meat-processing traditions. Chadwick's is one of the best-known traders at Bury Market, with a reputation built over decades among local shoppers and visitors alike. The straightforward, functional signage reinforces the stall's emphasis on tradition, familiarity and quality rather than novelty.
The image was taken indoors under artificial market-hall lighting, typical of year-round trading conditions, and captures a small but culturally significant detail of British food heritage. It is well suited for editorial use illustrating regional identity, traditional British cuisine, historic markets, local economies and the persistence of everyday food traditions in modern England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RGPN8C - Quality Save is a chain of discount stores operating in northern England. The head office/store for Quality Save was located in Swinton.
History
Quality Save was founded in 1974 by Bob Rudkin. He started off with an indoor market stall in Walkden, and a small shop in Farnworth. The company opened more outlets over time.
In 2010, stores began playing a clip every fifteen minutes reminding customers of their Star Buy deals, their cheap prices in comparison to pound stores, and the company's alcohol policy. These clips end with the company's name and their slogan: Quality Save. Quality Brands Quality Prices. In 2012, Quality Save closed an outlet in Barnsley to open a much bigger one a few feet down the road. They also closed a temporary unit in Urmston, and opened a new one in the Eden Square Shopping Centre.
In 2015, the Middleton branch of Quality Save was closed, and a superstore was launched in the ex Tesco unit next door. It was then confirmed that their biggest ever superstore would open in the beginning of 2017 in Walkden, the town where the company was first founded on a market stall. In February 2017, the biggest ever Quality Save store was opened in Walkden Town Retail Park. This store was 22,000 cubic feet. On the 26th January 2023, Quality Save was sold to TJ Morris, owner of Home Bargains.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PG60W3 - The Borough of Waverley is a local government district with borough status in Surrey, England. The borough's headquarters are in the town of Godalming
other notable settlements are the towns of Farnham and Haslemere and the large village of Cranleigh. At the 2021 Census, the population of the borough was 128,200.
Waverley borders the borough of Guildford to the north, the Mole Valley district to the east, the Horsham and Chichester districts of West Sussex to the south, and the East Hampshire and Hart districts and the borough of Rushmoor in Hampshire to the west and northwest. The borough is named after Waverley Abbey, near Farnham, the earliest Cistercian monastery in Britain. Blackheath Common, in the north of the borough, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Waverley is a Wealden borough, bounded to the north by the Hog's Back section of the North Downs and by the Greensand Ridge. It has the most green space in absolute terms in Surrey at 293.1 km2 (113 sq. mi.) according to the central government-compiled Generalised Land Use database of January 2005, approximately half of which is woodland.
Much of the west of the borough echoes former ownership by the abbey, such as Waverley Cricket Club and the Waverley Arms pubs in Farnham and elsewhere. Equally echoed are the tens of square miles held under Farnham holding of the Bishop of Winchester which took in the western parishes of Frensham and Churt as well as much of Farnham parish since the early 12th century when one such Bishop, Henry of Winchester and of Blois established Farnham Castle as the See's episcopal home but which is today the borough's main surviving castle and a museum to the period.

This impressive mural of the mercurial frontman of The Fall was painted by graffiti artist Akse P19 as part of the Prestwich Art Festival in 2018.
The mural was painted 9 months after the underground rock icon died aged 60 after a battle with lung and kidney cancer, and features Smith smoking a cigarette in typically nonchalant fashion, alongside the quote Fear is something I try not to absorb', from an interview he gave to the Guardian newspaper in 2011.
Smith who was born in Broughton, Salford in 1957 founded The Fall were founded in Prestwich in 1976, and lived in the area for most of his life.
The Fall were one of the most prolific and acclaimed post-punk bands to emerge in the UK, and retained a large cult following right until Smith's death. He was the only constant member of the group that notoriously had a high turnover of members. Smith once wittily remarked if it's me and yer granny on bongos, it's the Fall.
The mural is on the side of the fish and chip shop Chips @ No.8 on Clifton Road.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy E6HY59 - Metrolink is a light rail system in Greater Manchester, England. The network consists of six lines which radiate from Manchester city centre and terminate at Altrincham, Ashton-under-Lyne, Bury, Didsbury, Eccles, and Rochdale. The system is owned by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and operated and maintained under contract by RATP In 2013/14, 29.2 million passenger journeys were made on the system, also known as Manchester Metrolink.
A light rail system for Greater Manchester was borne of Greater Manchester County Council's obligations to provide an integrated and efficient system of public transport under its structure plan and the Transport Act 1968. Greater Manchester's public transport network suffered from poor northsouth connections, exacerbated by the location of Manchester's main railway stations, Piccadilly and Victoria, which were unconnected and lay at opposite edges of central Manchester. Abandoning the monorail and underground options conceived in the 1960s and 1970s, light rail was proposed in 1982 as the best and most economical public transport solution for Manchester city centre and the surrounding Greater Manchester metropolitan area, and gathered support throughout the 1980s as an appropriate integrated commuter service.
Government approval was granted in 1988 and the network began operating services between Bury Interchange and Victoria on 6 April 1992. This founded the United Kingdom's first modern street-running rail system and its second operational public tram system, the 1885-built Blackpool tramway being the only heritage tram system in the UK that had endured up to Metrolink's creation.
Metrolink has 77 stops along 48.5 miles (78.1 km) of standard-gauge track routed through seven of the ten boroughs of Greater Manchester. The system has a mix of designated light railway (segregated from other traffic) and on-street tramway.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BN3853 - The Transport Act of 1968 allowed double-deck buses to be operated by one-person (up until then only single-deck buses had been permitted to be one-person-operated). This effectively sounded the death knell for the conductor and the two-man crew, as local authorities sought to put their transport undertakings on a firmer financial footing. It also brought about the rapid demise of the front-engined rear-entrance vehicle from our roads.
The last buses to be put into service by Bury Corporation were delivered in 1969. Three Leyland PDR1/1 Atlanteans (Nos. 1-3
KEN231-233G) with dual-entrance 72-seat East Lancs bodywork, six Daimler CRG/6LX Fleetlines (Nos. 92-97
KEN292-297G) with single-deck 41-seat dual-entrance East Lancs bodywork, and a Bedford J25Z10 (No. 81
KEN381G) with Duple 21-seat body (christened the 'breadvan' by crews). The Bedford was purchased specifically for the Chesham route, since the roads were deemed unsuitable for the heavier vehicles.
The idea of setting up a co-ordinated bus service in the larger cities of the country lay simmering for some years until the 1960's when it was revived. In December 1967 a white paper was published under the title 'Public Transport and Traffic'. This was later made the 1968 Transport Act, receiving the Royal Assent on October 25th 1968.
This Act created the Passenger Transport Authorities in Merseyside, Manchester, Tyneside and West Midlands. The PTA's were made up of members of local councils who drew upon the policies of each undertaking. Under their control were the Passenger Transport Executives (PTE's) who were professionals that would directly run the local services. There were to be no payments of compensation for the vehicles or premises as they were handed over to another joint local authority.
On the 1st Apr 1969 the PTA's were officially created and on the 1st November 1969 the PTE's took over the operations. At midnight on the 31st October 1969, Bury Corporation Transport Department ceased to exist

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BNKK4R - 80080 was built at Brighton in March 1954. It was based on the Eastern Region working on the London, Tilbury and Southend Line (LT&S) working commuter services out of London until that route was electrified in 1962.
It was withdrawn from service in July 1965 whilst based at Croes Newydd which by this time was a London Midland Region after being transferred from the Western Region in September 1963.
80080 was then sold for scrap to Woodham Brothers at Barry. It arrived at Barry in January 1966 and it remained there for the next fourteen years during which time it suffered the ravages weather, metal thieves, and later preservationists removing parts. When the locomotive was purchased in the autumn of 1980 all non-ferrous and motion parts were missing and it was no more than a skeletal hulk.
80080 was purchased for restoration in 1980 and moved to Matlock in November of that year but was moved to the Midland Railway at Butterley thee years later for restoration.
80080 also became the first steam engine to work a normal stopping passenger service on the mainline for over a quarter of a century back in March 1993, it worked for over a week on the Settle and Carlisle line working from Carlisle to Kirkby Stephen and back. It also returned to the famous Cambrian network in 1992.
80080 returned to steam following an overhaul in November 2010 and shortly afterwards was hired to the East Lancs Railway. In December 2016 the locomotive returned to the West Shed of the Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust where it will undergo some engineering work after failing its annual boiler inspection. It is understood that three of its superheater flue tubes failed.
