Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DX14P2 - A Reform UK campaign sign staked into a front garden outside a red brick suburban house in Denton, Greater Manchester, promoting the candidate Matt Goodwin and urging support in the Gorton and Denton parliamentary by-election, dated 26th February. The turquoise sign carries the Reform UK branding and the slogan I'm voting Matt Goodwin, with a smaller matching poster visible in the window behind. In the background, two flags fly above the garden hedge, a Union Jack and an England flag, adding a distinctly British, patriotic visual cue to the scene. Shot in late winter, the garden planting looks subdued and evergreen, with bare branches overhead and low seasonal colour, while the sky shows patches of blue with broken cloud in cold daylight. The image captures the everyday, street level nature of UK electioneering, where campaign messaging is planted literally at the boundary between private homes and public streets. It works as an editorial illustration of modern British politics, local campaigning, voter persuasion, and how parties use domestic spaces, signage, and national symbols to signal identity, affiliation, and intent in the run-up to polling day. The photograph also documents the visual language of a contemporary UK by-election, including typography, slogans, and date specific political advertising in a residential neighbourhood.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8PTT9 - Editorial concept image showing the words Hope and Glory in bright neon lighting set against a large Union Jack flag within an ornate gold frame. The composition turns a familiar patriotic phrase into a loaded political symbol, inviting interpretations linked to Brexit, British nationalism, imperial nostalgia, sovereignty politics and the continuing argument about Britain's place in Europe and the wider world. The red, white and blue neon text has the feel of a bold public statement, but the image can also be read ironically, as a commentary on older myths of British greatness, post-imperial identity and the clash between nostalgic patriotism and modern multicultural reality. This makes it especially useful for editorial themes around Reform UK style politics, populism, anti EU sentiment, culture war rhetoric, anti immigration narratives, English nationalism, flag politics and debates about whether appeals to national pride are harmless symbolism or part of something darker and more exclusionary. The visual impact is strong, with the glowing neon letters creating a sense of theatricality and confrontation, while the Union Jack backdrop anchors the subject firmly in British political and cultural discourse. Suitable uses include news features, opinion pieces, magazine essays, blogs and commentary about Brexit Britain, reactionary politics, national identity, patriotic branding, empire memory, right-wing campaigning, xenophobia debate and the tension between civic pride and exclusionary ideas of belonging. The image also works more broadly as a symbol of contested Britishness, where slogans such as Hope and Glory can be understood either as celebration or as critique, depending on the context in which they are used. A visually striking current affairs illustration for stories about political symbolism, national myth-making, contested patriotism and the ongoing reshaping of British identity after Brexit.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T19PG5 - Warrington Oktoberfest is back, and it will be held once again at Warrington's Parr Hall later this year. More info at www.warringtonoktoberfest.org.uk
The event is organised by Rotary Warrington, with all profits from the festival going to good causes.
A must-visit for beer aficionados, the festival will include dozens of speciality brews, imported ales, and drinks of varying strengths and tastes.
There will also be a gin and fizz bar, a cider bar, and a driver's bar available during the event, too.
Warrington Oktoberfest will be held at Parr Hall between October 12-14.
There will be traditional Oktoberfest-style food available throughout the event, which is set to be supplied by Warrington's 'best for burgers 2023' Cafe at the End of the Universe.
Speaking to the Warrington Guardian, one of the event's organisers - Samantha Bridger - said that the whole group has been 'blown away' by the support provided by sponsors of the event.
She said: All our sponsors are amazing, and they help with everything from the set up, to equipment, money, and even the racking used for beer kegs.
In terms of ticket costs, Samantha said: We are delighted to say that tickets are £10, which we think is phenomenally cheap, and we're selling them in advance - which includes a small booking fee.
Tickets will be available on the door, too, if we have any left.
There will be live music performed across the event, with the following bands playing across the festival:
The Pink Pumps
Fairchild Robinson
The Red River Band
It has also been announced that drinks can be purchased via a token system.
For any cask ale that is marked at less than five per cent alcohol content, it costs one green token per half pint.
Ales marked as stronger than five per cent cost one yellow token per half pint.
No-alcohol drinks, plus prosecco and gins are marked at costing one yellow token.
For £10, attendees will receive five green tokens, or 11 tokens for £20.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RW3WYA - The Greek Revival façade facing Great Russell Street is a characteristic building of Sir Robert Smirke, with 44 columns in the Ionic order 45 ft (14 m) high, closely based on those of the temple of Athena Polias at Priene in Asia Minor. The pediment over the main entrance is decorated by sculptures by Sir Richard Westmacott depicting The Progress of Civilisation, consisting of fifteen allegorical figures, installed in 1852.
The construction commenced around the courtyard with the East Wing (The King's Library) in 18231828, followed by the North Wing in 18331838, which originally housed among other galleries a reading room, now the Wellcome Gallery. Work was also progressing on the northern half of the West Wing (The Egyptian Sculpture Gallery) 18261831, with Montagu House demolished in 1842 to make room for the final part of the West Wing, completed in 1846, and the South Wing with its great colonnade, initiated in 1843 and completed in 1847, when the Front Hall and Great Staircase were opened to the public. The museum is faced with Portland stone, but the perimeter walls and other parts of the building were built using Haytor granite from Dartmoor in South Devon, transported via the unique Haytor Granite Tramway.
In 1846 Robert Smirke was replaced as the museum's architect by his brother Sydney Smirke, whose major addition was the Round Reading Room 18541857
at 140 feet (43 m) in diameter it was then the second widest dome in the world, the Pantheon in Rome being slightly wider.
The next major addition was the White Wing 18821884 added behind the eastern end of the South Front, the architect being Sir John Taylor.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39XY7 - This is the end of a second decade making street art for Dr.D ( aka @Subvertiser ) and the second solo show. There won't be another one for ten years. 'Panicky in the UK' is a collection of the past 20 years of Dr.D's work.
About
'Panicky in the UK' BSMT presents a subversion art exhibition by Dr.D (aka Subvertiser) with Benjamin Irritant and Lazy Edwin.
This is the end of a second decade making street art for Dr.D ( aka @Subvertiser ) and the second solo show. There won't be another one for ten years. 'Panicky in the UK' is a collection of the past 20 years of Dr.D's work that takes like a sampler from the signage of the street and remixes it with the misheard and repurposed phrases of everyday conversations.
Dr. D aka Subvertiserhas been like the window wiper to the rain of advertising we suffer daily. His bus stop and billboard interventions have forced us to stop, recalibrate and question what we have seen and believed for twenty years! Dr. D will be showing alongside two contemporaries, Benjamin Irritant and Edwin who also work with humorous word play and anti-establishment rhetoric while having a keen eye on the climate emergency. Benjamin Irritant stabs at capitalism with surreal collage and Edwin turns street art on it's head, refusing to beautify thereby pushing against the commercial machine that Public Art has become.
This isn't just decoration chasing likes and pound notes. This is genuine street art. To make the show have some worth beyond just pictures on walls, part of the show will be fund raising for a food bank in the 'Panic Buy'.
BSMT has already raised funds for Extinction Rebellion and continuing in this environmentally sound consciousness, work in the show has been produced using repurposed and upcycled consumer goods and advertising detournement.
'Panicky in the UK' opens at BSMT Urban Art gallery with a private view April 2nd and will run until April 19th.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J7R - This image shows the Palace of Westminster, home to the UK Parliament, viewed from the River Thames in central London. The Gothic Revival complex dominates the skyline, with the Elizabeth Tower and the Victoria Tower rising above the riverside trees.
In the foreground, Lambeth Bridge spans the Thames, providing a strong visual lead-in across the river toward Westminster. The bridge connects the City of Westminster with Lambeth on the south bank and is a key transport crossing in this part of London.
The Palace of Westminster is one of the most recognisable symbols of British democracy and governance. Originally rebuilt in the 19th century after a catastrophic fire, it now serves as the meeting place for the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Its riverside setting reinforces the historic relationship between the Thames and the development of London as a political and administrative centre.
Photographed in daylight under a blue sky with scattered clouds, the image combines heritage architecture, river transport, and urban infrastructure. It is well suited to editorial use covering British politics, government institutions, London landmarks, heritage tourism, constitutional history, and the River Thames as a defining feature of the capital.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1Y84F - The basic verb phrase carry on means to continue doing something, but here, it specifically means to persevere and is often associated a British stiff upper lip.
According the UK's official History of Government blog, the British Ministry of Information developed a series of three posters in 1939 to rally and reassure its populace as World War II ramped up. The third, and now iconic, poster flashed Keep Calm and Carry On in white, capital letters underneath an image of a crown on a bright, grabbingly red background. Who, exactly, coined the slogan is unclear. The other two posters featured equally comforting slogans: Your Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution
Will Bring Us Victory and Freedom is in Peril
Defend it with all Your Might.
The British government printed nearly 2.5 million copies, reserving them to boost morale in case of a particularly bad German bombing. It never did display the posters, and most were recycled in 1940 during a wartime paper shortage.
The Keep Calm and Carry On poster languished in number and obscurity until Stuart Manley discovered a copy in 2000 tucked away in a box of old books for his bookshop, Barter Books, in Alnwick, England. His wife and co-owner, Mary, framed and displayed the poster. Patrons fell in love with it, and the booksellers printed tens of thousands of copies over the decade.
The poster skyrocketed in popularity after the 2008 recession, explained Foreign Affairs Correspondent Jon Henley in 2009 for The Guardian. Social psychologist Alain Samson observed for Henley that [t]he words are also particularly positive, reassuring, in a period of uncertainty, anxiety, even perhaps of cynicism.
Since then, keep calm and carry on exploded as a meme. Everyone from crafters to tweeters have riffed on the slogan. Variations typically follow the template Keep Calm and X: Keep Calm and Drink Tea or Drink Beer, swapping out the crown icon for a teacup or pint glass

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1NK60 - St Michael and All Angels Church stands on Warhill overlooking the village of Mottram in Longdendale, Greater Manchester, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Macclesfield and the deanery of Mottram
The earliest evidence of a church on the site is in 1225 when clergy attached to the church were witnesses to local documents. There is a further reference to the church in a taxation document dated 1291. The present church dates from the end of the 15th century. A major restoration took place in 185455 by E. H. Shellard, during which the nave roof was raised
The church is built from local stone quarried from Tinsell-Norr in Perpendicular style. The plan consists of a west tower, a five-bay nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a two-bay chancel and a south porch. At the east end of each aisle is a chapel. The north chapel is known as the Hollingworth Chapel and the south chapel is the Staley Chapel. The tower is in four stages with angled buttresses, a three-light west window above which is a clock face and two-light belfry openings. In one corner is a stair turret. At the top is a castellated parapet with crocketed corner finials.
In the churchyard is a sundial with a dial dated 1811. It consists of a stone shaft with a copper dial and a gnomon. It is listed at Grade II. Also listed at Grade II are the gatepiers, railings, steps and walls of the churchyard. Near the church is a medieval cross which was restored in 1760 and again in 1897, the latter restoration being to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria. The octagonal shaft stands on a stepped circular ashlar plinth. On its top is a cubical sundial with three copper faces. It is listed at Grade II*

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M07A92 - Whitehall is a road and area in the City of Westminster, Central London. The road forms the first part of the A3212 road from Trafalgar Square to Chelsea. It is the main thoroughfare running south from Trafalgar Square towards Parliament Square. The street is recognised as the centre of the Government of the United Kingdom and is lined with numerous departments and ministries, including the Ministry of Defence, Horse Guards and the Cabinet Office. Consequently, the name Whitehall is used as a metonym for the British civil service and government, and as the geographic name for the surrounding area.
The name was taken from the Palace of Whitehall that was the residence of Kings Henry VIII through to William III, before its destruction by fire in 1698
only the Banqueting House has survived. Whitehall was originally a wide road that led to the front of the palace
the route to the south was widened in the 18th century following the destruction of the palace.
As well as government buildings, the street is known for its memorial statues and monuments, including the UK's primary war memorial, the Cenotaph. South of the Cenotaph the thoroughfare becomes Parliament Street.
The name Whitehall was used for several buildings in the Tudor period. It either referred to a building made of light stone, or as a general term for any festival building. This included the Royal Palace of Whitehall, which in turn gave its name to the street
Numerous London bus routes run along Whitehall, including 12, 24, 88, 159 and 453
Downing Street leads off the south-west end of Whitehall, just above Parliament Street. It was named after Sir George Downing, who built a row of houses along the street around 1680 leading west from Whitehall.
Richmond House, at No. 79, has held the Department of Health since 1987. The building is scheduled to be a temporary debating chamber from 2025, while the Houses of Parliament undergo a refurbishment and modernisation programme

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M0MBAT - This image shows the Elizabeth Tower at the Palace of Westminster in London, England, featuring the iconic clock faces often referred to collectively as Big Ben. Strictly, Big Ben is the nickname of the Great Bell housed within the tower, while the structure itself has officially been known as the Elizabeth Tower since 2012, renamed in honour of Queen Elizabeth II. The close-up view highlights the ornate Gothic Revival detailing and the distinctive clock face that has become one of the most recognisable symbols of the United Kingdom.
The tower was completed in 1859 as part of Charles Barry's redesign of the Palace of Westminster, with architectural detailing by Augustus Pugin. Rising over 96 metres above the Thames, the Elizabeth Tower has played a central role in British public life, with its clock and chimes marking time for Parliament and the nation. The clock mechanism is renowned for its accuracy and durability, remaining operational through wars, political change, and extensive restoration.
The image conveys themes of British heritage, governance, architecture, and national identity. It is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to London landmarks, political institutions, historic architecture, travel and tourism, timekeeping, and the visual identity of the United Kingdom.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JBXJJF - The national flag of the United Kingdom is the Union Jack, also known as the Union Flag.
The design of the Union Jack dates back to the Act of Union 1801 which united the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland (previously in personal union) to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The flag consists of the red cross of Saint George (patron saint of England (which also represents Wales)), edged in white, superimposed on the saltire of St Patrick (patron saint of Ireland), also edged in white, which are superimposed on the saltire of Saint Andrew (patron saint of Scotland). Wales is not represented in the Union Flag by Wales's patron saint, Saint David, because the flag was designed whilst Wales was part of the Kingdom of England.
The Union Flag can be flown by any individual or organisation in Great Britain on any day of their choice. Legal regulations restrict the use of the Union Flag on Government buildings in Northern Ireland. Long-standing restrictions on Government use of the flag elsewhere were abolished in July 2007
The Union Flag is flown from Government buildings at half-mast in the following situations:

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DTMKPY - Brains (S. A. Brain & Company Ltd.) is a regional brewery based in Cardiff, Wales. It was founded in 1882 by Samuel Arthur Brain.[1] At its peak, the company controlled more than 250 pubs in South Wales (particularly in Cardiff), Mid Wales and the West Country but the brewer sold most of its pub estate in 2022.[2] The company took over Crown Buckley Brewery in Llanelli in 1997 and Hancock's Brewery in 1999. In 2000, Brains moved to the former Hancock's Brewery just south of Cardiff Central railway station. The Old Brewery, in Cardiff city centre, has been developed into a modern bar and restaurant complex.
The company produces a range of beers under the Brains, Buckley's and Hancock's names. As part of their marketing strategy, Brains use shirt sponsorship for the Wales national rugby union team and the Crusaders Rugby League team

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy W42N8R - Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton MBE (born 7 January 1985) is a British racing driver who races in Formula One for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport. A five-time Formula One World Champion, he is often considered the best driver of his generation and widely regarded as one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport. He won his first World Championship title with McLaren in 2008, then moved to Mercedes where he won back-to-back titles in 2014 and 2015 before winning back-to-back titles again in 2017 and 2018. The most successful British driver in the history of the sport, Hamilton has more World Championship titles (5) and more race victories (80) than any other British driver in Formula One. He also holds records for the all-time most career points (3,241), the most wins at different circuits, the all-time most pole positions (86) and the most grand slams in a season (3).
Born and raised in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, Hamilton's interest in racing started when his father bought him a radio-controlled car when he was six. He was signed to McLaren's young driver support programme in 1998, after he approached McLaren team principal Ron Dennis at an awards ceremony three years earlier and said one day I want to be racing your cars. After winning the British Formula Renault, Formula 3 Euro Series, and GP2 championships on his way up the racing career ladder, he made his Formula One debut twelve years after his initial encounter with Dennis, driving for McLaren in 2007. Coming from a mixed background, with a black father and white mother, Hamilton is the first and only black driver to race in Formula One

born 17 October 1979), nicknamed Iceman, is a Finnish racing driver currently driving in Formula One for Alfa Romeo Racing. He won the 2007 Formula One World Championship in his first season at Scuderia Ferrari. After nine seasons racing in Formula One he left the sport to compete in the World Rally Championship in 2010 and 2011, returning to Formula One from 2012. In addition to this title, Räikkönen also finished second overall in 2003 and 2005, and third in 2008, 2012 and 2018. Räikkönen has won 21 Grands Prix, making him the most successful Finnish driver in terms of Formula One race wins. He is the only driver to take a race win in the V10, V8 and the hybrid V6 engine eras.
Räikkönen entered Formula One as a regular driver for Sauber-Petronas in 2001, having competed in only 23 car races previously. He joined McLaren Mercedes in 2002, and became a title contender by finishing runner-up in the championship to Michael Schumacher in 2003, and Fernando Alonso in 2005. Räikkönen's 2002, 2004 and 2006 seasons were plagued by severe unreliability from his McLaren cars, prompting a move to Ferrari in 2007. This change saw him crowned Formula One World Drivers' Champion that season, pipping both McLaren driversLewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonsoto the title by just one point. In 2008 he equalled the record for the greatest number of fastest laps in a season for the second time.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BCTGR8 - Stockport is a large, major town in Greater Manchester, England, 7 miles (11 km) south-east of Manchester city centre, where the River Goyt and Tame merge to create the River Mersey, and the largest in the metropolitan borough of the same name.
Historically, most of the town was in Cheshire, but the area to the north of the Mersey was in Lancashire. Stockport in the 16th century was a small town entirely on the south bank of the Mersey, and known for the cultivation of hemp and manufacture of rope. In the 18th century the town had one of the first mechanised silk factories in the British Isles. However, Stockport's predominant industries of the 19th century were the cotton and allied industries. Stockport was also at the centre of the country's hatting industry, which by 1884 was exporting more than six million hats a year
the last hat works in Stockport closed in 1997.
Dominating the western approaches to the town is the Stockport Viaduct. Built in 1840, the viaduct's 27 brick arches carry the mainline railways from Manchester to Birmingham and London over the River Mersey. This structure featured as the background in many paintings by L. S. Lowry.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEW1A7 - Murals in Northern Ireland have become symbols of Northern Ireland, depicting the region's past and present political and religious divisions.
Belfast and Derry contain arguably the most famous political murals in Europe. It is believed that almost 2,000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. In 2014, the book, The Belfast Mural Guide estimated that, in Belfast, there were approximately 300 quality murals on display, with many more in varying degrees of age and decay. Murals commemorate, communicate and display aspects of culture and history. The themes of murals often reflect what is important to a particular community. A mural therefore exists to express an idea or message and could generally be seen as reflecting values held dear to that community.
In Irish republican areas the themes of murals can range from the 1981 Irish hunger strike, with particular emphasis on strike leader Bobby Sands
murals of international solidarity with revolutionary groups are equally common, as are those which highlight a particular issue, for example the Ballymurphy Massacre or the McGurk's Bar bombing. In working class unionist communities, murals are used to promote Ulster loyalist paramilitary groups such as the Ulster Defence Association and Ulster Volunteer Force and commemorate their deceased members. However traditional themes such as William III of England and the Battle of the Boyne, the Battle of the Somme and the 36th Ulster Division are equally common

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDEYMN - Since the onset of the Troubles in 1971, Nationalist and Loyalist communities throughout Northern Ireland have been divided by Peace Walls. These large stone and steel constructions were designed to protect neighbourhoods from sporadic attacks and retain a sense of peace and protection.
Of the city's 17 walls, West Belfast's sections are the most visited. Once in the area it's easy to determine which side of the divide you're on: red, white and blue kerbstones, Loyalist murals and Union Jacks indicate you're on the Shankill. If the kerbs are green, white and gold, the flag is Irish and the murals are Republican, you're on the Falls.
You can cross from one side to the other via access roads at Lanark Way and Northumberland Street. These roads close in times of heightened tension, which may well be the case during the marching season (see The Twelfth). GoTonySmith

The proportions of the flag are 1:2 (that is to say that, as flown horizontally, the flag is half as high as it is wide). The Irish government has described the symbolism behind each colour as being that green represents the older Gaelic tradition while the orange represents the supporters of William of Orange. The white in the centre signifies a lasting truce between the 'Orange' and the 'Green'

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXKGB - LGBT Warrington is organised by LGBT members who are all volunteers. The group has built great relationships with partners, which include the Council, police, health and local businesses.
They are here to help and welcome anyone who would like to join us to stamp out the stigma people may have on the LGBT community.
The group offers support to those who need it on a 1-2-1 basis and is treated with great confidentiality, and point people in the right direction of the services they require.
They meet throughout the year mainly to have a brew and chat about life in general, to meet and make new friends, and for those who require extra support, to help by signposting to relevant services in Warrington. We also at times hold activities such as bowling, theatre trips, quizzes and games.
They also have nights out in the town centre at Cotton Mill or Show Bar and take part with events they are holding, or even have the odd night out to Manchester to Canal Street or to the theatre.
During the year they are also visited by guest speakers.
They welcome visitors and potential new members whatever their sexuality, though is open to 18+ only.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXXWJ - LGBT Warrington is organised by LGBT members who are all volunteers.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DE9AP0 - The Bridgewater Canal connects Runcorn, Manchester and Leigh, in North West England. It was commissioned by Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, to transport coal from his mines in Worsley to Manchester. It was opened in 1761 from Worsley to Manchester, and later extended from Manchester to Runcorn, and then from Worsley to Leigh.
The canal is connected to the Manchester Ship Canal via a lock at Cornbrook
to the Rochdale Canal in Manchester
to the Trent and Mersey Canal at Preston Brook, southeast of Runcorn
and to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Leigh. It once connected with the River Mersey at Runcorn but has since been cut off by a slip road to the Silver Jubilee Bridge.
Often considered to be the first true canal in England, it required the construction of an aqueduct to cross the River Irwell, one of the first of its kind. Its success helped inspire a period of intense canal building in Britain, known as canal mania. It later faced intense competition from the Liverpool and Manchester Railway and the Macclesfield Canal. Navigable throughout its history, it is one of the few canals in Britain not to have been nationalised, and remains privately owned. Pleasure craft now use the canal which forms part of the Cheshire Ring network of canals.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H3FKJ9 - Robins Pie and Mash shop closes after more than 30 years serving Ilford.
Robins Pie and Mash, Chapel Road, Ilford, which is being run by the fifth generation of a family, closed on Saturday.
Owner June Robins said: There is still demand for pie and mash but unfortunately this is not the case in Ilford any more. Customers seem to want a different type of food.
It was a very sad day when we closed. We first opened the branch over 30 years ago but things have become a lot more expensive, especially as we get all our meat from Scotland.
The company, which has recently started supplying frozen meals to the Asda supermarket chain, also has a number of other branches including one in High Street, Wanstead.
Ms Robins added: When we informed our customers we would be shutting they just kept asking why.
I don't think pie and mash is dying out as we have a lot of demand in other areas including at weddings and football games, including West Ham United.
But times are changing and people seem to want universal food such as pizza and burgers. Pie and mash has a limited regional appeal.
Traditionally pie and mash dates back to the 19th century, when Dutch ships delivered live eels, which were used in pies, to Billingsgate Market.
Customer, Paul Scott, of Sandhurst Drive, Goodmayes, added: This is a great shame and customers aren't happy about it especially as there will now be no more pie and mash shops in Ilford.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HTNE - Olympic Torch arrives in Warrington.
The Flame arrived in Warrington from Halton via Liverpool Road at around 12.30pm. It will travel the length of Sankey Street, past the Golden Gates and Bank Park, where 300 primary school children took part in a mini-Olympics.
It was then carried to Market Gate where the 70-strong Warrington Male Voice Choir performed, and then turn down Buttermarket Street and on to Winwick Street. The Torch then called into Tesco for a 15-minute stop.
The route was announced by Warrington Borough Council and the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG).
Members of the public are invited to line the streets throughout the town centre or to visit Orford Park to celebrate the achievements of the eight inspirational Torchbearers who will be carrying the Flame in Warrington.
Torchbearers included Great Sankey resident Stephen Deakin MBE. He is the manager of the Royal Liverpool Hospital transplant sports team and an enthusiastic campaigner for organ donation.
Stephen aged 50, said: When I first heard I had been nominated I was absolutely made up but to be chosen to carry the torch. I am really honoured and humbled.
Other torch bearers from Warrington include Emily Woodward age 12, Helen Lea, age 42, Ian Livingston and Jason El-kaleh age 17.
Cllr Terry O'Neill, leader of the council, said: I would encourage everyone to come out and see the Flame as it comes through the town, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity and a chance to get the countdown to London 2012 officially started in Warrington.
Sebastian Coe, chair of LOCOG said: Today we bring the Olymp

Caustic, bleak, no bullshit—not that you’d expect anything less from the plebian punk act that married nihilism with hooliganism. In a gaunt, football-chant chorus, the band declares no future for anybody, be it civilian, paramilitary, or otherwise: “Ulster / There ain’t no winners.” The final lines of “Ulster” are even grimmer, as singer Jimmy Pursey predicts an outcome for those ensnared in the sectarian web of violence: “And now you’re lyin’ in your hospital bed / You can still hear the bullets rushing past your head / No more fun for you ain’t no more / You’ve ended like the rest and now you’re dead.”
Not one of my most fav tracks, but one I think suitable for this violent week in Northern Ireland and Belfast in particular. The battle of the Boyne celebrations split the community in a way that the slightest spark may result in a burning car, watercannon on the street or more injuries being ferried to the Major Trauma Centre at the Royal Hospitals. They are experts in the field so fortunately you would be in good hands (medical, not catholic or protestant).
Many on the streets this week are apparently teenagers who never experienced the original 70's/80's 'troubles'.
Sinn Fein MLA Jennifer McCann was reported to be at Broadway for several hours during the trouble. She believes that those taking part in the rioting were not from the area.
'Mostly what I saw was people who came from other parts of Belfast, who would be known as anti-social elements, who had taken a lot of drink and were attacking the police,' she said.
'I am appealing to young people who may be caught up in this behaviour to stay away from Broadway, Ardoyne or anywhere else there may be a chance of trouble.'
There is a broad desire for peace across the community. Lets all hope normal more peaceful service can resume soon....

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HE7M73 - St Anne's Cathedral, also known as Belfast Cathedral, is a cathedral of the Church of Ireland in Donegall Street, Belfast, Northern Ireland. It is unusual in serving two separate dioceses (Connor and Down and Dromore), yet being the seat of neither (it is geographically in the Diocese of Connor), it is therefore not a cathedral in the truest sense of the word, a cathedral being a church housing the seat of a bishop.[1] It is, however, titled as such. It is the focal point of the Cathedral Quarter, Belfast.
The first architect was Sir Thomas Drew, the foundation stone being laid on 6 September 1899 by the Countess of Shaftesbury. The old parish church of St Anne by Francis Hiorne of 1776 had continued in use, up until 31 December 1903, while the new cathedral was constructed around it
the old church was then demolished. The Good Samaritan window, to be seen in the sanctuary, is the only feature of the old church to be retained in the cathedral. Initially, only the nave of the cathedral was built, and this was consecrated on 2 June 1904.
In 1924 it was decided to build the west front of the cathedral as a memorial to the Ulstermen and women who had served and died in World War I. The foundation stone for this was laid by Governor of Northern Ireland, the Duke of Abercorn on 2 June 1925 and the completed facade, to an amended design by the architect Sir Charles Archibald Nicholson, was dedicated in June 1927.
In the meantime, the central crossing, in which the choir sits, was built between 1922 and 1924. The Baptistery, to plans drawn up by the late W H Lynn, who had assisted Sir Thomas Drew, was dedicated in 1928, and the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, with its beautiful mosaics depicting Saint Patrick, was dedicated on 5 July 1932, the 1500th anniversary of the arrival of St Patrick in Ireland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEEG4K - Murals in Northern Ireland have become symbols of Northern Ireland, depicting the region's past and present political and religious divisions.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CET1GE - Here shown at dusk, Warrington Town Hall is in the town of Warrington, Cheshire, England.
It consists of a house, originally called Bank Hall, flanked by two detached service wings at right angles to the house, one on each side. The house and the service wings are each designated by English Heritage as Grade I listed buildings.
At the time the house was built Warrington was in the historic county of Lancashire. The architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner declared it to be the finest house of its date in south Lancashire
Bank Hall was built in 1750 for Thomas Patten. The architect was James Gibbs and it is likely that it was the last important building of his design to be completed in his lifetime. When it was built it stood in open countryside to the north of the town of Warrington.
The Patten family were important merchants in the town. Thomas' father had made the lower River Mersey navigable from Runcorn to Bank Quay, Warrington, and had established a copper smelting factory at Bank Quay. In 1870 John Wilson-Patten, 1st Baron Winmarleigh, sold the hall to Warrington Borough Council for £9000 (£640,000 as of 2013), and 13 acres (5.3 ha) of surrounding land for a further £15,000 (£1,060,000 as of 2013).
Almost all of the land was opened as Warrington's first public park in 1873. When the house was built, it was surrounded by a high wall. In 1895 this was replaced by iron railings and a fine set of gates.
