In 1997, some residents living on the Isle of Dogs launched a lawsuit against Canary Wharf Ltd for private nuisance because the tower interfered with TV signals. The residents lost the case.

The ECHO teamed up with Virgin Trains to help celebrate the firm's 20th birthday and invited people to come up with a name for one of their iconic Pendolinos, used on the West Coast mainline between Lime Street and Euston.
Other shortlisted suggestions for the new name included Mighty Mersey, Pride of Liverpool, Merseyside Express and Liver Bird.
Arif Mahmood, Virgin Trains station manager for Liverpool Lime Street said the response to the competition had been overwhelming.

The National Provincial Bank played a unique role in the development of commercial banking. Prior to the Act of 1826, English banks were permitted to have no more than six partners ? hence the expression private banks. The only banks allowed to be joint stock were the Bank of England and the Scottish banks (which operated under a different legal system). The leading campaigner for change was Thomas Joplin a Newcastle timber merchant with local experience of banking disasters and an observer of the greater stability of the nearby Scottish banks. The Act of 1826 permitted the establishment of joint stock banks but note issue was only allowed outside a radius of 65 miles of London.[3] The 1826 Act was followed by the creation of new provincial joint stock banks and conversions from existing private banks. Because of the prohibition on note issue in the London area, it was incorrectly assumed that the Act also prohibited joint stock banks themselves, an ambiguity that was removed by the Bank Charter Act 1833

Grey herons are prevalent throughout Europe, Africa and also in Asia. They typically breed in woodland areas that are close to the water and can be spotted around lakes, estuaries, ponds, rivers and even coastal marshes. Herons are adaptable birds and will feed in any water, be it fresh, salt, clear or muddy, so long as it will yield a catch.
Herons can stand for several minutes with their necks tensed, waiting for an unsuspecting fish to swim into reach. Alternatively, they will stalk the shallows searching for food. Then, quick as a flash, they will dart down and spear the prey with their long dagger-like bill.
The grey heron is the only member of the heron family to be commonly found in Britain. You will be lucky to catch a glimpse of the bittern, which is very scarce, or the egret, which is a rare visitor. Thankfully, the grey heron population is doing well in the UK and is more abundant now than ever before, despite the ever-present danger of starvation over the cold winter months.

History
The name Lymm, of Celtic origins, means a place of running water and is likely derived from an ancient stream that ran through the village centre. The village appears as Limme in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Lymm was an agricultural village until the Industrial Revolution, which brought the Bridgewater Canal and the Warrington and Altrincham Junction Railway to the village. The village played a prominent role within the salt extraction industry, gold beating industry and cotton industry (many of its inhabitants were fustian cutters).
Lymm Heritage Centre, which opened in June 2017, is in the centre of the village on Legh Street. It hosts exhibitions related to local history as well as activities for schools and visitors.
Morris dancing was taking place in Lymm as early as 1817, often appearing in the village at Rushbearing time throughout the Victorian era. Morris dancing[7] continues to feature within the village with Lymm Morris dancers frequently performing during Rushbearing and at the various annual village festivals including the Lymm May Queen Festival, Lymm Festival and Lymm Dickensian Festival.
In 2017, Lymm was voted as one of the 'Best Places to Live' according to The Times and The Sunday Times list. In 2023, the village was voted as one of Britains 'Most Desirable Towns' according to The Daily Telegraph

Avanti West Coast initially operates the same services as Virgin Trains on the West Coast Main Line. When High Speed 2 opens, it will also operate these services.

It was formed on 19 June 2007 by the merger of Thomas Cook AG (itself the successor to Thomas Cook & Son) and MyTravel Group.[9] The group operated in two separate segments: a tour operator and an airline. It also operated travel agencies in Europe. On 23 September 2019 Thomas Cook Group and all UK entities went into compulsory liquidation.
Thomas Cook was listed on both the London Stock Exchange and the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. The Thomas Cook Group ceased trading on 23 September 2019. Approximately 21,000 worldwide employees were left without jobs (including 9,000 UK staff) and 600,000 customers (150,000 from the UK) were left abroad, triggering the UK's largest peacetime repatriation.
After the collapse, segments of the company were purchased by others, including the travel stores in the UK, the airlines, the Thomas Cook name and logo, the hotel brands and the tour operators.
In February 2019, the Financial Times newspaper said that the Thomas Cook Group had received bids for its airline business, which includes Condor, and also the company as a whole. In March 2019, Thomas Cook UK announced 21 travel office closures and the redundancy of 300 staff, justifying the decision with the fact that 64% of bookings had been made online in 2018
On 9 October 2019, independent travel agent Hays Travel announced that it had acquired all 555 former Thomas Cook travel stores in the UK, and planned to re-employ a significant number of former employees. Hays, which already operated 190 of their own stores, expected to retain over 25% of the retail staff, saving roughly 2,500 jobs

The Union Bank was an early joint stock bank in the industrial heartland of Lancashire, established in 1836 with a capital of ?6 million divided into 24,000 shares of ?25 each. Although the original intention of the Union Bank was to confine itself to Manchester, after twenty years this policy was changed, and its first branch opened at Knutsford in 1856. The bank flourished with the growth of industry and acquired several smaller banks in Lancashire, Cheshire and Yorkshire. It became an affiliated bank within the Barclays Group in 1919, when 99% of its capital was acquired under an arrangement whereby Union Bank shareholders were given shares in Barclays to replace their Union Bank shares. It is unknown what will become of it when Debenhams closes but, in a recent interview, Golden Square director Ian Cox said there was interest in the unit.
After scraping through previous years, the pandemic saw Debenhams finally fall into administration.
In January, online fashion retailer Boohoo bought the Debenhams brand and website in a ?55million rescue deal that will see the company operate as an online-only retailer from next year.
Debenhams in Golden Square reopened on April 12 for a final closing down sale when non-essential retailers were given the green light to reopen.
The number of jobs lost in Warrington and altogether as a result is still unknown, but with stores closing across the 242-year-old brand, it is unlikely many of the remaining 12,000 jobs will be saved.
A Debenhams spokesman said: We are now heading into the final days of our closing down sale and this is the very last chance for our customers to take advantage of some incredible deals.
With up to 80 per cent off across our remaining stores, customers are urged to shop now while stocks last.
Over the next 10 days, Debenhams will close its doors on the high street for the final time in its 242-year history.

The bank was established on 1 May 1859 by Colonel Edward Akroyd of Halifax. Based in Leeds in the West Riding of Yorkshire it was known as the West Riding Penny Savings Bank. It had originally been planned as a provident society but the status of savings bank was eventually chosen.
In its centenary year of 1959, the bank's name changed to Yorkshire Bank Limited. During the 1970s the bank became one of the first to offer fee free banking whilst in credit, a move that took bigger rivals a decade to follow. In 1982, it adopted public limited company status.
During the Miners' Strike from 1984 to 1985, the bank offered miners who were mortgage holders a deferment, allowing them to postpone payments for the duration of the dispute. The strike took place in the bank's heartland and many miners were customers, having been encouraged by the National Coal Board to have their pay mandated to a bank account.
In 1990, the National Australia Bank Group acquired the bank from the consortium of owning banks which, after mergers and acquisitions, were the National Westminster Bank, (holders of 40%), Barclays Bank (32%), Lloyds Bank (20%), and Royal Bank of Scotland (8%). The price paid was ?1 billion and the bank joined National Australia Bank's other European businesses, Clydesdale Bank (Scotland) and Northern Bank (which operated in both jurisdictions in Ireland).

It shows two cornucopia (horns of plenty) spilling money (or maybe gold) into two vessels, around the motto Thrift is Blessing. This choice of words might suggest to customers that by depositing their money in the bank they will be rewarded with rich returns. However, it is actually a quotation from Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice - Shylock says it as part of a defence of his profession of money lending.
The mosaic is made of glass smalti. The cornucopia and motto appear over a pleated cloth, with a blue background. Notice how several shades of green have been used to give the effect of the folds in the fabric.

The first partnership was with Joseph Parr, a sugar boiler, his brother-in-law Matthew Lyon, and Walter Kerfoot, a solicitor. more colloquially it was known as The Warrington Bank.
Parr's remained essentially a local bank with offices in Warrington, Runcorn and St Helens until 1865 when the it became a joint stock bank under the name Parr's Banking Company. Helped by a series of acquisitions, including the National Bank of Liverpool, Parr's built up its presence in Cheshire, Lancashire and Staffordshire
by 1890 there were 22 branches and 21 sub-branches.
The Bank's most important strategic move came in 1891 when it purchased the small London bank of Fuller, Banbury, Nix & Co.. This gave Parr's a seat on the London Clearing House and, in contrast to the nearby Bank of Liverpool it immediately moved the head office down to London. With Fuller giving the Bank an initial London presence, the substance was provided by the acquisition of the Alliance Bank in 1892.
The Alliance had emerged from the financial reconstruction which had seen it lose its Liverpool and Manchester offices and now had 12 branches in London
in recognition of Alliance's importance the name of the Bank was changed to Parr's Banking Company and the Alliance Bank. Other smaller London banks were acquired and in 1896 it bought the Consolidated Bank, only slightly smaller than the Alliance, but this time a London bank with branches in Manchester. At that point, the name was returned to Parr's Bank.
By the outbreak of war in 1914 Parr's had almost 400 branches and sub-branches. In 1918 Parr's agreed to amalgamate with the London County and Westminster Bank. The Chairman of Parr's made the case: We gain access to a very large area in the Home Counties. They gain a first-class introduction to Lancashire & beyond.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H542X8 - Starting with a small grocery business begun by his father, William Lever and his brother James entered the soap business in 1885 by buying a small soap works in Warrington.
The brothers teamed up with a Bolton chemist, William Hough Watson, who became an early business partner. Watson invented the process which resulted in a new soap, using glycerin and vegetable oils such as palm oil, rather than tallow.
The resulting soap was a good, free-lathering soap, at first named Honey Soap then later named Sunlight Soap. Production reached 450 tons per week by 1888. Larger premises were built on marshes at Bromborough Pool on the Wirral Peninsula at what became Port Sunlight.
Though the company was named Lever Brothers, William Lever's brother and co-director James never took a major part in running the business. He fell ill in 1895, probably as a result of diabetes, and resigned his directorship two years later

It is known locally as The Golden Boys after its colour, or The Carpet Salesmen after the partially rolled-up plan of a steam engine which they are examining. They were most famous for improving and developing the steam engine.
Sponsored by an ?8,000 bequest from Richard Wheatley in 1939, and ?7,500 from the City Council, it was unveiled in 1956, from preliminary designs drawn up in 1938.
The statue was restored and re-gilded, and replaced in its old position in September 2006.
It will be moved across the road into Centenary Square by late 2018. The statue was moved into storage on 23 August 2017

It prefers moist soils but will grow pretty much anywhere. Plants can grow up to 3m tall, making this the tallest annual species growing wild in the UK.
A native of the Western Himalaya, it was introduced in 1839 to Kew Gardens as a greenhouse exotic. It escaped into the wild and is now recorded throughout the UK, particularly along the banks of watercourses. It is locally common in Wales and England. It is less frequent in the Highlands of Scotland and western parts of Northern Ireland, but it is rapidly increasing its range. It grows quickly, spreads easily, readily colonises new areas and out-competes other vegetation. The line used to continue to Manchester but due to structural damage on a bridge over the Ship Canal, it was truncated at Latchford Sidings in the 1980s, just past Arpley Junction to the east.
The main freight passing beneath Warrington station are coal trains to Fiddlers Ferry Power Station. These follow a complex route from Liverpool Docks. Most workings reverse at Edge Hill, before proceeding via Rainhill and Earlestown and through Bank Quay station. They then run round in Arpley Yards, before passing Arpley Junction to Latchford Sidings. They then run round again to pass Arpley once more to head to Fiddlers Ferry. Occasionally they can be routed via Widnes to Liverpool instead of via the reverse of the above route, which will entail them exiting Fiddlers Ferry, passing Arpley Junction to Latchford, running round and heading back past Arpley and Fiddlers Ferry to Speke. Generally a train will take 30-40 minutes between passing through Bank Quay on the main line to heading under the station to Fiddlers Ferry. They will take about 90-120 minutes then to return. There are usually about 3 trains operating this circuit, but are dependant on a ship arriving at Liverpool Bulk Terminal.
Other freight trains also use Latchford Sidings to reverse when Arpley Yard is busy.

The Royal Exchange was heavily damaged in the Manchester Blitz and in the 1996 Manchester bombing. The current building is the last of several buildings on the site used for commodities exchange, primarily but not exclusively of cotton and textiles.
The cotton industry in Lancashire was served by the Manchester Royal Exchange which traded in spun yarn and finished goods throughout the world including Africa while the Liverpool Cotton Exchange traded in imported raw cotton. In the 18th century the trade was part of part the slave trade in which African slaves were transported to America where the cotton was grown and then exported to Liverpool where the raw cotton was sold.[2]
The first exchange opened in 1729 but closed by the end of the century. As the cotton industry boomed, the need for a new exchange was recognized. Thomas Harrison designed the new exchange of 1809 at the junction of Market Street and Exchange Street.[2] The expanding cotton industry required a larger building and its extension was completed in 1849. The second exchange was replaced, by a third exchange by Mills & Murgatroyd, constructed between 1867 and 1874. It was extended and modified by Bradshaw Gass & Hope between 1914 and 1931 to form the largest trading hall in England.
The trading hall had three domes and was double the size of the current hall. The colonnade parallel to Cross Street marked the its centre. On trading days merchants and brokers struck deals which supported the jobs of tens of thousands of textile workers in Manchester and the surrounding towns. Manchester's cotton dealers and manufactureres trading from the Royal Exchange earned the city the name, Cottonopolis

Straddling Edinburgh's Old and New Towns, the site posed grave challenges for the builders. Firstly, there was a steep drop of 16 metres from front to back. A more serious issue was instability: the 'earthen Mound' (as it was known) was a man-made hill, created from the earth excavated for the New Town. The site had also been a rubbish dump in the past, and contained vast quantities of household waste!
Consequently, there was a serious risk of slippage. To overcome this, a substantial retaining wall was constructed on the north side of the building.
By the 1850s, the building was proving unsatisfactory. It was now too small for the Bank's growing business. There had also been complaints that it looked stark and ugly when viewed from Princes Street. Indeed, the famous judge Lord Cockburn described it as a 'prominent deformity'. Seeking to resolve these issues, several architects were invited to submit plans for extending and improving the building.
The directors eventually selected David Bryce. His solution was to add full-height wings to the east and west, tied back to the original building.

Myosotis sylvatica (wood forget-me-not)
Forget-me-nots may be annual or perennial plants. Their root systems are generally diffuse. Their seeds are found in small, tulip-shaped pods along the stem to the flower. The pods attach to clothing when brushed against and eventually fall off, leaving the small seed within the pod to germinate elsewhere. Seeds can be collected by putting a piece of paper under the stems and shaking the seed pods and some seeds will fall out.
It is possible that the genus originated in the Northern Hemisphere although it is equally possible that evolution occurred in New Zealand. One or two European species, especially the wood forget-me-not, Myosotis sylvatica have been introduced into most of the temperate regions of Europe, Asia and the Americas.
Forget-me-nots are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including the setaceous Hebrew character.
The Chatham Islands forget-me-not belongs to a related genus, Myosotidium.

Yes, those 'Jacks In The Green' (yep they are plural !) have been busy during that long unusually cold winter. The results of their quiet labour seem to have all burst out into bloom around us.
The Pussy willow (Salix Caprea) is native to our corner of Europe and bits of Asia. The flowers seen here along an old railway line, are soft silky, silvery 3-7 cm long catkins, produced in early spring before the new leaves appear. Its dioecious in that there are male and female catkins on different plants.
Before the male catkins of these species come into full flower they are covered in fine, greyish fur, leading to a fancied likeness to tiny cats, also known as 'pussies'. The catkins appear long before the leaves, and are one of the earliest signs of spring.
The male catkins mature yellow at pollen release, the female catkins pale green. The fruit is a small capsule 5-10 mm long containing numerous minute seeds embedded in fine cottony hairs. The seeds are very small (about 0.2 mm) with the fine hairs aiding dispersal. To germinate they require bare soil.
This plant was historically widely used as a browse for goats and that might be the origin of the other name for this shrub.

It consists of a house, originally called Bank Hall, flanked by two detached service wings at right angles to the house, one on each side. The house and the service wings are each designated by English Heritage as Grade I listed buildings.
At the time the house was built Warrington was in the historic county of Lancashire. The architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner declared it to be the finest house of its date in south Lancashire
Bank Hall was built in 1750 for Thomas Patten. The architect was James Gibbs and it is likely that it was the last important building of his design to be completed in his lifetime. When it was built it stood in open countryside to the north of the town of Warrington.
The Patten family were important merchants in the town. Thomas' father had made the lower River Mersey navigable from Runcorn to Bank Quay, Warrington, and had established a copper smelting factory at Bank Quay. In 1870 John Wilson-Patten, 1st Baron Winmarleigh, sold the hall to Warrington Borough Council for ?9000 (?640,000 as of 2013), and 13 acres (5.3 ha) of surrounding land for a further ?15,000 (?1,060,000 as of 2013).
Almost all of the land was opened as Warrington's first public park in 1873. When the house was built, it was surrounded by a high wall. In 1895 this was replaced by iron railings and a fine set of gates.

Last week, Black Sheep announced administrators had been appointed after being hit very hard by the pandemic and a rise in costs.

The Flame arrived in Warrington from Halton via Liverpool Road at around 12.30pm. It will travel the length of Sankey Street, past the Golden Gates and Bank Park, where 300 primary school children took part in a mini-Olympics.
It was then carried to Market Gate where the 70-strong Warrington Male Voice Choir performed, and then turn down Buttermarket Street and on to Winwick Street. The Torch then called into Tesco for a 15-minute stop.
The route was announced by Warrington Borough Council and the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG).
Members of the public are invited to line the streets throughout the town centre or to visit Orford Park to celebrate the achievements of the eight inspirational Torchbearers who will be carrying the Flame in Warrington.
Torchbearers included Great Sankey resident Stephen Deakin MBE. He is the manager of the Royal Liverpool Hospital transplant sports team and an enthusiastic campaigner for organ donation.
Stephen aged 50, said: When I first heard I had been nominated I was absolutely made up but to be chosen to carry the torch. I am really honoured and humbled.
Other torch bearers from Warrington include Emily Woodward age 12, Helen Lea, age 42, Ian Livingston and Jason El-kaleh age 17.
Cllr Terry O'Neill, leader of the council, said: I would encourage everyone to come out and see the Flame as it comes through the town, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity and a chance to get the countdown to London 2012 officially started in Warrington.

Chain buckling under coronavirus shutdown just a year after it was rescued & considering filing a formal notice of intention to appoint administrators.
Debenhams is preparing to call in administrators after the struggling department store was forced to close all its outlets under the coronavirus lockdown.
The company, which has 22,000 staff and was rescued by its lenders after collapsing into administration only a year ago, is understood to be considering filing a formal notice of intention to appoint administrators next week. The legal process provides protection from creditors for 10 working days while a company tries to secure a rescue deal.
Potential administrators lined up this time include KPMG, which handled the Debenhams restructure last May.
A Debenhams spokesman said: Like all retailers, we are making contingency plans reflecting the extraordinary current circumstances. Our owners and lenders remain highly supportive and whatever actions we may take will be with a view to protecting the business during the current situation.
They added: While our stores remain closed in line with government guidance, and the majority of our store-facing colleagues have been furloughed, our website continues to trade and we are accepting customer orders, gift cards and returns.
It is understood that the potential insolvency measure would be intended to protect the business so it could continue to trade.
Debenhams was taken over last year by a group of its financial backers, including the US hedge funds Silver Point and GoldenTree, after falling into administration. It then used an insolvency process known as a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) to cull unprofitable sites and cut rents.
The group has closed 22 stores, 19 of which shut in January, resulting in more than 700 job losses. A further 28 of its remaining 141 stores had been lined up for permanent closure next year.

The theft of metal is a big problem for the railway as thieves target signalling cables, overhead power lines and even metal fences to sell for scrap.
Britain's rail network is designed to fail safe, which means that when a cable is cut trains are brought to a standstill. This protects passengers but can lead to lengthy, frustrating delays while the problem is found and fixed safely.
A large proportion of funding comes from the UK Government, so these thefts are, ultimately, costing taxpayers money.

It is located in the city centre on the land bounded by St Ann's Square, Exchange Street, Market Street, Cross Street and Old Bank Street. The complex includes the Royal Exchange Theatre and the Royal Exchange Shopping Centre.
The Royal Exchange was heavily damaged in the Manchester Blitz and in the 1996 Manchester bombing. The current building is the last of several buildings on the site used for commodities exchange, primarily but not exclusively of cotton and textiles.
The cotton industry in Lancashire was served by the Manchester Royal Exchange which traded in spun yarn and finished goods throughout the world including Africa while the Liverpool Cotton Exchange traded in imported raw cotton. In the 18th century the trade was part of part the slave trade in which African slaves were transported to America where the cotton was grown and then exported to Liverpool where the raw cotton was sold.[2]
The first exchange opened in 1729 but closed by the end of the century. As the cotton industry boomed, the need for a new exchange was recognized. Thomas Harrison designed the new exchange of 1809 at the junction of Market Street and Exchange Street.[2] The expanding cotton industry required a larger building and its extension was completed in 1849. The second exchange was replaced, by a third exchange by Mills & Murgatroyd, constructed between 1867 and 1874. It was extended and modified by Bradshaw Gass & Hope between 1914 and 1931 to form the largest trading hall in England.
The trading hall had three domes and was double the size of the current hall. The colonnade parallel to Cross Street marked the its centre. On trading days merchants and brokers struck deals which supported the jobs of tens of thousands of textile workers in Manchester and the surrounding towns.
