Step into The Lower Angel, and immediately you know you're in a real' pub. This charming and unspoilt building on Buttermarket Street is as traditional as it gets. The curious name stems from the now-demolished Higher Angel that stood next door.
It's an often-heard complaint that real pubs are no longer. In a world where the big chains dominate, it's a joy to find a gem like this. It's got it all: a friendly bunch of regulars, excellent bar staff, and a fine selection of beers.
For a real ale drinker like myself, this is the ideal place to enjoy a few pints on a Friday afternoon. The layout is a welcome and familiar vault and lounge set-up, which hasn't changed in decades. A bar in the middle complete with bar stools, a rarity in the major chains is exactly as I imagine it would have been when built.
Comfortable and Welcoming
The clientele is regular, local people enjoying a chat and a pint, yet the atmosphere is friendly, and I feel welcome. This isn't always the case in pubs of this type, but The Lower Angel is somewhere I could happily return to regularly.
I took a seat at the bar and was immediately acknowledged by the man on the next stool and the attentive barman. Liverpool Brewing Company supplies most of the real ales on offer here, so I tried the Cascade,' which proved to be a good choice. A pale ale of 3.8%, it's a perfect afternoon session ale.
Dogs are welcome in the bar, and there were a couple lying asleep under one of the tables, and there is a sheltered beer garden. Pleasing for me was the low level of background music. Too often, it's at a higher volume, and it's difficult to initiate a conversation.
The friendly local on my left broke the ice with the usual not seen you in here before' comment. We chatted for a while, as you do in a genuine pub setting, and he told me about the history of the memorabilia that is part of the décor. You don't get that in your bigger, city centre chain pubs.

A product of the last generation of cotton mill building, Leigh Spinners was designed by Bolton architects Bradshaw, Gass & Hope for the Horrocks Company, and built in two phases. The east section comprising the six-storey mill, boiler house and chimney stack was built in 1913 and the matching west section was completed ten years later. One of the few double mills to be completed, it is one of the most complete still standing in Greater Manchester. Part of the factory is occupied by Leigh Spinners Ltd who have manufactured carpets since 1969 and since 2012, synthetic turf products for landscaping and sport.
The building is in poor condition and considered to be at risk by Historic England. A charity, the Leigh Building Preservation Trust was formed to restore the steam engine and engine house. In September 2013 the charity was awarded a £75,000 grant to restore the steam engine and repair the engine house by Waste Recycling Environmental Limited, a heritage fund that protects buildings of historical importance. The charity was able to turn the engine in 2018 for the first time in many years.
As at January 2019, the younger of the two mill buildings has had extensive roof repairs, allowing the Charity to advance the restoration of several floors. Sport England funding enabled the conversion of one floor to accommodate a Table Tennis Club,

four bays. Two C20 shop fronts, not of special interest, and panelled door on left (to No 76A). Ground and first floors each have moulded brick cornice, with tile weathering, above a band of raised, brick, ovals and lozenges, first floor cornice rising at centre into segmental pediment (broken by rainwater pipe).
Windows have flat brick arches and are of three lights to first floor, two lights to attic, all with mid-C19 decorative square- and polygonal-paned glazing. First floor has strapwork panels between windows, pendant finials to ends, and more elaborate central panel with oval datestone. Attic originally had four gables, with strapwork, these joined up in C19 to form coped parapet ramping down at each end

The new building, which was designed by Clifford Culpin & Partners in the Postmodern style and built by Taylor Woodrow Construction, was completed in 1978. It was officially opened by the Prime Minister James Callaghan on 24 February 1979.The design, which involved a stepped profile for the building and located it on a large piazza, has similarities with the Panch Mahal in Fatehpur Sikri. It was chosen as the location of an overspill estate, built by Manchester City Council. This was in order to rehouse people from decaying inner city areas of Manchester. These housing areas were also built in other towns surrounding Manchester, such as nearby Hattersley on the outskirts of Hyde.
The Gamesley estate was built in 2 half's. The first houses were built by contractors Finnegans which were constructed with
flat felted roofs, pebble dash cladding ground floors and tile cladded first floors. Finnegans houses were equipped with warm air central heating which used gas as an energy source. The Finnegan side of the estate was known locally as the gas side'. In the late 1980s the local authority renovated the Finnegan system built houses, the works included re-enveloping the external building with traditional bricks and mortar. The works also added apex roofing complete with roofing tiles.
The second half of the Gamesley estate was built a couple of years later by George Wimpey using the Wimpey no-fines house building method. The houses were constructed with full pebble dash finish and tiled apex roofing. The houses built by George Wimpey had a solid concrete ground floor which had electrical underfloor heating installed, the first floors of these houses were built with no heating. Due to electricity being the main energy source for heating, the George Wimpey side of Gamesley became known locally as the electric side'.

Brewery
Joseph Holt have brewed on their site in the Cheetham area, to the north of Manchester city centre, since 1860.[2] Ale and lager malts are now delivered in bulk loads and stored in silos while speciality malts continue to be delivered in sacks. Between 15 and 500 barrels (4,500 150,000 pints) can be brewed per day, and a hopback is still in use, along with traditional whole leaf hops, to collect and clarify wort after boiling. All ales are top fermented in enclosed square fermenters using the historic Joseph Holt yeast strain, while lagers are fermented and conditioned in modern cylindroconical vessels. Joseph Holt have their own borehole on the brewery site to abstract brewing liquor (water) and are one of only a handful of brewers in the UK still to rack into 36 gallon casks, as well as hogsheads, the largest barrel size, carrying 432 pints (54 imperial gallons, 250 L) and weighing roughly 660 pounds (300 kg) when full.
History
Joseph Holt, the son of a weaver, was born in 1813 in Unsworth, a textile village near Bury. He worked as a carter at Harrison's Strangeways Brewery. In 1849 he married Catherine Parry, who helped finance a small brewery behind a pub on Oak Street, Manchester.
In 1860, he purchased the brewery site on Empire Street, Cheetham. His reputation in Manchester endures
in 2007, readers of the Manchester Evening News voted him People's Champion in the Greatest ever Business Leaders awards. In 1882, by which time he had established a chain of 20 public houses, Joseph passed control of the brewery to his son Edward. Edward Holt was later knighted, served as Lord Mayor of Manchester from 1907 to 1909 and was made a baronet in 1916.

Charitable soup kitchens proliferated in nineteenth-century Europe and North America. Three soup kitchens operating in England between 1870 and 1910 are compared
two were Jewish soup kitchens, the other was an English (non-Jewish) charity. Institutional buildings are often analyzed using Foucault-derived models of control based on surveillance and punishment. Such models may not explain fully charities, their buildings, or their method of reform. Historical archaeology can show how charity that coerces or dehumanizes the poor is less likely to create lasting improvements in the behaviors it is seeking to reform than charity that adopts a more positive approach.
The Manchester Jewish Soup Kitchen
Documentary History
The Jewish soup kitchen in Manchester had its first meeting in November 1895 (Manchester Jewish Soup Kitchen 1912). The committee was formed by local rabbis
the women present formed a sub-committee to organize fund-raising. By 1904, half of the main committee was made up of women. The kitchen opened three times a week from Chanukah (i.e., in early 1896) until Passover. The committee adopted the name The Soup Kitchen for the Jewish Poor Manchester, after the London soup kitchen. In 1908 the name was changed to The Manchester Jewish Soup Kitchen.
The committee located a site on the corner of Exchange Street (now Empire Street) and Southall Street, opposite the northeast corner of Strangeways Prison, on the western side of the Jewish community. Plans were drawn up by architect Thomas Bushell. Fundraising for the new building included a penny-brick fund by which less well-off donors could sponsor a brick for the cost of one penny.
Michael Marks, the co-founder of department store Marks & Spencer and an active committee member, made a substantial donation in 1905 for funding tickets

The Group's roots are traced back to the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers, established in 1844. The Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers was based on the Rochdale Principles which notably introduced the idea of distributing a share of profits according to purchases through a scheme which became known as the dividend or Divi.
Although the Co-operative Group incorporates the original Rochdale Society, the business's core for much of its history were its wholesale operations. This began in 1863 when the North of England Co-operative Wholesale Industrial and Provident Society Limited was launched in Manchester by 300 individual co-operatives in Yorkshire and Lancashire. By 1872, it was known as the 'Co-operative Wholesale Society' (CWS) and it was wholly owned by the co-operatives which traded with it. The CWS grew rapidly and supplied produce to co-operative stores across England, though many co-ops only sourced around a third of their produce through the CWS. It was this continued and fierce competition with other non-co-operative wholesalers which led to the CWS becoming highly innovative. By 1890 the CWS had established significant branches in Leeds, Blackburn, Bristol, Nottingham and Huddersfield alongside a number of factories which produced biscuits (Manchester), boots (Leicester), soap (Durham) and textiles (Batley). In an attempt to drive down the significant cost of transportation for produce the CWS even began its own shipping line which initially sailed from Goole docks to parts of continental Europe. One of the CWS' steamships, the Pioneer, was the first commercial vessel to use the Manchester Ship Canal.

This is a very early use of cast iron in a church and may reflect Roe's innovative and entrepreneurial character.
The east window glass was given in memory of Charles Roe's son, daughter-in-law and grandson, and Roe's ornate monument, in marble, is on the south wall. It lists a detailed description of his achievements and shows in relief his silk mill (with waterwheel), his copper works in Liverpool, and Christ Church itself.
The interior resembles a modern concert hall designed so that the congregation could all see and hear the preacher. The original pulpit was more than 3.5 metres high, allowing the preacher to command the attention of his congregation throughout this large church. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism preached from this pulpit at least 12 times. Though now somewhat altered, the pulpit still survives. The outspoken preacher David Simpson, a radical socialist who championed the cause of the poor and helped found the Sunday School Movement was the much-loved first minister of Christ Church. A window depicting the Good Samaritan, commemorates him.
The church has a fine ring of 10 bells, which are still used regularly.

The name Golden Square' is believed to originate from Gelding Close which referred to land being used for horse grazing. The area gained fame in the 1700s as the home of many foreign diplomatic envoys from countries as Poland, Portugal, Genoa, and Russia. Indeed, Bavarian minister Count Haslang was resident at numbers 23 & 24 when he served as envoy to England between 1739 and 1783. These houses were later attacked during the anti-Catholic Gordon Riots in 1780. These properties later purchased by the Roman Catholic Bishop for the London District in 1788 to build the current Warwick Street Chapel behind these houses.
In 1750, residents were empowered to elect thirteen trustees to beautify the square and a statue, believed to represent Charles II was erected in 1753. The statue design has been attributed to Flemish-born sculptor John van Nost. Golden Square has also had many famous residents, both real and fictional. Angelica Kauffman, the first female member of the Royal Academy and painter Martin Archer Shee both called this fantastic square home. In addition, Golden Square was also the setting for Ralph Nickelby's dingy house in Charles Dicken's 1839 novel Nicholas Nickelby.
By the end of the Nineteenth Century, the area was home to the wool and worsted yarn trade. The first company moved in in 1868, and by 1900 there were at least 70 firms connected with the yarn trade based in Golden Square. Many houses were later demolished to make way for offices and warehouses and the only properties with surviving 18th Century elements are Nos. 11, 21, 23, and 24. An air raid shelter was dug under Golden Square during the Second World War and the iron fence was taken for salvage. After the war restoration work was carried out and the new paved garden reopened to the public in November 1952.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JDJ4J2 - The parish of Christ Church started with the building of an infant's school when the population of Latchford grew large enough to warrant such a school. This building still exists and it is now known as Wash Lane Schoolroom. However, after the death of Thomas Greenall, and following his wishes, his family decided to build a small sandstone church of Gothic design. The church consisted of a nave and chancel with an ornamental spire and its first priest was the Reverend Richard Greenall. On Tuesday, 16th July 1861 the Bishop of Chester, the Right Rev. Dr. John Graham, consecrated the church under the name of Christ Church. One can still find a brass plate in the chancel of the church commemorating the event: To the glory of God, and in affectionate memory of the late Thomas Greenall of Wilderspool and Grappenhall this church was erected Anno Domini 1861.
Christ Church was originally a chapel of ease to the mother church of St. Wilfrid at Grappenhall and was made a parish by Order of Council on 12th March 1866 with a population of 1,031 people. The parish priest at that time was the Reverend W.R. Burgess. The Vicarage was built in 1867 on land adjoining the church bought by Thomas Greenall's sons.
In 1875-76 a gallery at the west end of the nave was removed along with the organ. A transept, organ chamber and a vestry were added on the north side of the church. An organ which originally belonged to St. Wilfrid's church was installed as well as the west tracery window and a sedilia was placed in the
Sanctuary. Stained glass windows were placed at the south side of the chancel and at the southwest end of the nave. At the beginning of September 1882 an alabaster reredos and chancel arch were added.

The most recent example of local enterprise is to be seen in the extension of the works of G.W. Bonson in Stamford New Road where an elaborate installation of machinery has been erected for the purposes of carpet beating. The appliances are the most perfect of their kind, and in a district where carpet beating, common and prosaic a business as it may seem, is an important industry during times of spring cleaning, the new facilities are bound to be largely used. Detailed analysis and recording ahead of conversion into flats. Four phases identfied: Phase 1 (1849) - rectangular building fronting Wolverhampton Road and adjoining terrace of Georgian houses
Phase 2 (later 19th century) - Phase 1 building extended to north, acquisition of warehouse building to W (which had a purpose built integral canal arm)
Phase 3 (later 19th century) - original mill and adjacent warehouse joined at 2nd and 3rd floor levels
Phase 4 (20th century) various concrete and steel frame and corrugated steel clad structures built to the north of the historic mill buildings. The Albion Flour Mill in Wolverhampton Street was built in 1849, probably for Thomas Caloe, miller there from at least 1851 until the 1890s. By 1900 Smith Bros. (Walsall) Ltd. had taken it over, and the firm was still milling there in 1973.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AEDHXN - Hit the North is a 1987 song by British post-punk band the Fall. The lyrics were composed by band leader Mark E. Smith with the music written by Simon Rogers and Brix Smith. It was released as a single in October 1987 and reached number 57 on the UK singles chart. According to Tom Doyle of Sound on Sound, the song is a rousing groovebased anthem which is now regarded by many as both their ultimate statement and best single.
The record was part of a conscious approach by Brix Smith and Simon Rogers, both of whom had recently joined the band, in increasing the Fall's popularity and accessibility. Brix Smith said: It was definitely a conscious thing on my part because they were so, so underground and so unappreciated and unknown. I just thought they were such an important band and it needed to be broadcast all over the world. Her husband at the time, Mark E. Smith, disagreed: ..it wasn't a conscious effort. It was just trying to get it a bit more punchy. I always like it very clean and simple. A lot of groups are swamped with sound.
The music was written by Rogers and Brix Smith, and recorded by Rogers on his newly-acquired Sequential Circuits Studio 440 sequencer-sampler. Rogers said literally the first thing I put into it was a bass and a snare just on two pads, a little tiny Indian bell... and a sax note and a bass note from a Gentle Giant record. When Rogers demonstrated the instrument to Mark E. Smith, Smith said: What's that music? I'll have that, just do me a tape. Smith recorded a demo, with the original programmed drums removed
on the final recording they are replaced by samples of Simon Wolstencroft's drumming. The song was recorded in Abbey Road Studios in July 1987, during the sessions for the band's album The Frenz Experiment, with Rogers as producer and Ian Grimble as recording engineer. Guitar and vocal distortions and other effects were added in the studio.

Housed in a former Victorian pub, The Buxton is a big-hearted homage to Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton, a 19th-century MP and previously the owner of the nearby Truman Brewery (itself now a hub for creative businesses and a weekly street-food market). In his day Sir Thomas was committed to abolishing slavery, founding the RSPCA and raising money for the local weaving community - acts of generosity that The Buxton nods to through its work with neighbourhood charity Cardboard Citizens, which uses theatre to tackle the issue of homelessness. Its present incarnation is the work of the team behind nearby Spitalfields gastropub The Culpeper, of gigantic rooftop-gherkin fame. Architect Gareth Roberts and business partner Nico Treguer have revamped the building by adding two extra floors, a rooftop terrace and a stonking street-level restaurant/bar, a much-needed addition to the kebab shops that more commonly characterise this end of Brick Lane.
Interiors avoid the traps of steampunk junk and Edison bulb-lit bareness, instead balancing whitewashed walls and potted plants with cleverly sourced vintage elements such as a Rosso Levanto marble counter, sapphire velvet chairs in the hallways and a 50s terrazzo-patterned floor. While the rooms are compact to say the least, for a flat rate of £100 (including a welcome drink and breakfast) it's a seductive option for staycationers, solo travellers and loved-up duos who fancy travelling no further than a few flights of stairs when going from dinner to duvet.

The term barra is Glaswegian dialect for barrow, relating to the market's early years, where traders sold their wares from handcarts. Barrowland is sometimes used to describe the district itself where the market is located, which is actually officially known as Calton.
Because of its location on Gallowgate the main thoroughfare from the city centre to Parkhead and Celtic Park, Barrowlands is also notable for its large concentration of public houses and shops devoted to fans of Celtic Football Club. Baird's Bar was one of the best known Celtic-oriented pubs next door to the Barrowland Ballroom building, the bar has since closed down due to violent incidents that have occurred in the premises. The bar is to be reopened as a furniture store.

Historically, most of the town was in Cheshire, but the area to the north of the Mersey was in Lancashire. Stockport in the 16th century was a small town entirely on the south bank of the Mersey, and known for the cultivation of hemp and manufacture of rope. In the 18th century the town had one of the first mechanised silk factories in the British Isles. At night time, and in daytime in the warmer months, the street is filled with visitors, often including gay and lesbian tourists from all over the world. The northern end of the street meets Minshull Street and the southern meets Princess Street
part of the street looks across the Rochdale Canal into Sackville Park.
90's Focus led to several of the pubs on or near Canal Street acquiring a predominantly gay clientele. In 1991, Manto (Manchester Tomorrow) bar opened at no. 46. It was built in 1989 by Benedict Smith Architects. Unlike the other gay bars at that time, Manto had large glass windows, allowing the casual passer-by to view what was going on inside. Previously, many establishments catering for the gay community were often keen to conceal activities from the general public, but the architectural design of Manto was seen as a queer visual statement of we're here, we're queer get used to it, and a brick-and-mortar refusal to hide any more, or to remain underground and invisible.
Over the next decade, more numerous and larger bars opened along the canal side, turning Canal Street into the centre of the most successful gay village in Europe. Because of this, the Canal Street street signs are regularly defaced to read Anal Treet or Anal Street. The success was further enhanced by the use of Canal Street and its bars in several television series, including Bob and Rose and Queer as Folk, both written by Russell T Davies.

Despite their name, the mints are not truly spherical but oblate spheroids. The ingredients of Uncle Joe's Mint Balls are: pure cane sugar, oil of peppermint and cream of tartar and are described on the tin as suitable for vegans. The words Gluten Free are also on the tin lid.
The early mint balls were made by William Santus' wife, Ellen, before production moved to a factory near Wigan Wallgate railway station in 1919.
The packaging, usually a sealed can, describes its contents as pure and good, and They keep you all aglow and carries a picture of the mascot, a smiling man in a top hat.
British singer/songwriter and humorist Mike Harding has a song called Uncle Joe's Mint Balls on his 1975 album Mrs. 'Ardin's Kid. It also appeared as the B side to his 1975 single My Brother Sylveste. Wigan Warriors have a version of the song celebrating some of its legendary rugby players of the 1950s and 60s such as Billy Boston, Brian McTigue and Eric Ashton that plays before some of its home games at the DW Stadium
On 16 February 2011, Wm Santus' Dorning Street factory produced the two-billionth Uncle Joe's Mint Ball, which was encased in resin and placed on display at the Museum of Wigan Life until 17 March.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK5MA - The Gladstone Pottery Museum is a working museum of a medium-sized coal-fired pottery, typical of those once common in the North Staffordshire area of England from the time of the industrial revolution in the 18th century to the mid 20th century. It is a grade II* listed building.[1]
The museum is located in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. It is also included in one of the regional routes of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.[2] Despite the name of the museum, it is a complex of buildings from two works, the Gladstone and the Roslyn.[3] The protected features include the kilns. As there are less than 50 surviving bottle ovens in Stoke-on-Trent (and only a scattering elsewhere in the UK), the museum's kilns along with others in the Longton conservation area represent a significant proportion of the national stock of the structures.
The museum is centred on the Roslyn pottery. It contains two biscuit ovens and two larger glost ovens. In addition are two enamel kilns. A tandem compound steam engine by Marshall & Sons, of Gainsborough, Lincolnshire is in place but it is turned by an electric motor. The two muffle kilns came from elsewhere.
The museum allows the visitor to explore the bottle kilns and exhibits the principal ancillary rooms: the engine house, the slip room, saggar making workshop. It shows aspects of working with clay- including hands on displays of throwing, moulding and decorating. Colour and gilding is presented as interpretive panels.
There is a gallery explaining the history of the tile: how it was pressed glazed and decorated. In one tableau the Gladstone Vase by Frederick Alfred Rhead is displayed.
There is also a gallery charting the history of sanitary ware, privies, earth closets and water closets

Originally, the defective harbour, with a shallow sand and gravel bar at its entrance, retarded the trade of Aberdeen, but under various acts since 1773 it was greatly deepened.
By the Harbour Act of 1868, the river Dee near the harbour was diverted from the south at a cost of £80,000, and 90 acres (364,000 m²) of new ground, in addition to 25 acres (101,000 m²) formerly made up, were provided on the north side of the river for the Albert Basin (with a graving dock), quays and warehouses. A 1050 ft (320 m) long concrete breakwater was constructed on the south side of the stream as a protection against south-easterly gales. On Girdleness, the southern point of the bay, a lighthouse was built in 1833.
The North Pier, built partly by John Smeaton 1775-81, and partly by Thomas Telford 1810-15, extends nearly 3,000 ft (1000 m) into the North Sea and raised the bar.
Victoria Dock, named in honour of the queen's visit to the city in that year, is a wet dock of 29 acres (117,000 m²) and with 6000 ft (1800 m) of quay, was completed in 1848

A chantry chapel was added by the Boydell family in 1334 in a position where the south aisle now stands. From 1529 the church was largely rebuilt in local sandstone. The old church was demolished and a new nave, chancel, north aisle and a west tower were built. In 1539 the south aisle was added, which incorporated the Boydell chapel.
The south porch was added in 1641 and at this time the west wall was strengthened. In 1833 the roof of the nave was raised to form a clerestory and in the 1850s the south aisle was further extended, and a vestry was built. There was a more substantial restoration in 187374 by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin, which included the provision of new floors and roofs, at a cost of about £4,000

founded in 1876 by leading Victorian industrialists, statesmen and professionals for the sole purpose of providing a venue where members could meet on a regular basis in comfortable surroundings to enjoy each others company and meaningful conversation.
The Club offered an excellent opportunity for business ideas, suggestions and deals to be discussed considering that in those early days there was no other means of communication except for a rather hit and miss postal service. In the modern idiom the Club provided what is now known as net working'.
The building occupied by the Warrington Club in Bold Street was purpose built using monies raised by the original 76 founder members. Those familiar with Warrington will no doubt recognise the names of some of the founder members.
Arthur Bennett (1862- 1931) a chartered accountant, was a remarkable character. He served as a Councellor and Alderman for many years and had hopes of making Warrington a Garden City'. Sadly, the Great War shattered the dream but the quality of the one completed terrace of houses in Sankey gives some evidence of his vision. The foundation stone was laid by the great pioneer of garden cities, Ebenezer Howard. Bennett was a prolific writer. His Dream of a Warringtonian', if romanticised, is still a very readable history of our 1,000 year old town, and his collection of poems Songs of a Chartered Accountant' posesses both warmth and charm. John, Earnest Crosfield of Joseph Crosfield & Sons Ltd. Finally, Sir Gilbert Greenall MP, Lieut Col. Greenall and Captain Grenall of the Greenall Whitley Brewery. Paul, Harry and George Rylands founders of the world famous Rylands Brothers Ltd, Wire & Nails manufacturers hence the obvious connection with the local Rugby League team known as The Wires'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY5KET - The first public baths in the town opened on Church Street on 1 May 1851 The foundation stone for Legh Street Baths was laid in 1865 and they opened in 1866. They were originally privately owned by the Warrington Baths Company who went bankrupt. The council purchased them in 1873 and added two extra pools in 1912. This was commemorated in a foundation stone on Legh Street
The baths closed forever on 31 July 2003 and stood empty until the demolition company Anthony O'Connor & Sons Ltd from Salford moved in on Saturday 16 April 2011. They had a contract to clear the site in preparation for the construction of a new health centre. The baths consisted of four swimming pools, a steam room, laundry, and slipper baths for both ladies and men. The early boilers were typical ships' boilers (there were two of those) running on heavy oil. Phil recalls spending many a happy hour warming the oil line with a blowlamp in order to get the oil thin and warm enough before the boilers would fire up.

The last night of the club was 28 June 1997, a club night called 'Freak' featuring DJs Elliot Eastwick and Dave Haslam (the final live performance was by Spiritualized on 15 June 1997). The club remained open for a short period as an art gallery before finally going bankrupt and closing for good. After the Haçienda officially closed, it was used as a venue for two free parties organised by the Manchester free party scene. One of the parties ended in a police siege of the building while the party continued inside. These parties resulted in considerable damage and painted graffiti to the Ben Kelly designed interior.
Following a number of years standing empty, The Whitworth Street West site was purchased from the receivers by Crosby Homes. They chose to demolish the nightclub, and reuse the site for the construction of domestic flats. The iconic name was kept for the new development, with the Haçienda name licensed from Peter Hook, who owns the name and trademark. The nightclub was demolished in 2002 - Crosby Homes had acquired the property some time before that and, on Saturday 25 November 2000, held a charity auction of the various fixtures and fittings from the nightclub. Clubgoers and enthusiasts from across the country attended to snap up memorabilia ranging from the DJ booth box and radiators to emergency exit lights. The DJ booth was bought by Bobby Langley, ex Haçienda DJ and Head of Merchandise for Sony Music London for an undisclosed fee.
Crosby Homes were widely criticised for using the Hacienda brand name - and featuring the strapline Now the party's over...you can come home in the promotional material. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DHGYW0 - The jewel in the crown' of Walsall town is, perhaps, its famous Victorian park, The Arboretum, and the setting of that jewel is entered through the historic gateways of a fine old Victorian building the main Arboretum Lodge, with its distinctive clock tower.
Once home of the legendary Walsall Illuminations festival of lights enjoyed annually by millions since its inauguration in 1952, Walsall Arboretum itself has its origins in another much more ancient activity in the town limestone mining.
The area now occupied by the Arboretum was originally part of Rushall until 1876. Limestone had been quarried in the vicinity since at least the late 18th century, with the Persehouse family demolishing Reynolds Hall so that the very profitable quarrying could continue. However, operations had ceased by the 1840's, leaving two great pits to fill up with water, both from the nearby stream and from springs and general drainage. The larger of the two pits, now lakes, was named Hatherton Lake by 1845, and the fine old row of houses now known as Victoria Terrace just to the north was in fact built as Hatherton Lake Villas by the early 1850's.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXKRH - The Albert Dock is a complex of dock buildings and warehouses in Liverpool, England. Designed by Jesse Hartley and Philip Hardwick, it was opened in 1846, and was the first structure in Britain to be built from cast iron, brick and stone, with no structural wood. As a result, it was the first non-combustible warehouse system in the world.
At the time of its construction the Albert Dock was considered a revolutionary docking system because ships were loaded and unloaded directly from/to the warehouses. Two years after it opened it was modified to feature the world's first hydraulic cranes. Due to its open yet secure design, the Albert Dock became a popular store for valuable cargoes such as brandy, cotton, tea, silk, tobacco, ivory and sugar. However, despite the Albert Dock's advanced design, the rapid development of shipping technology meant that within 50 years, larger, more open docks were required, although it remained a valuable store for cargo.
During the Second World War, the Albert Dock was requisitioned by the Admiralty serving as a base for boats of the British Atlantic Fleet. The complex was damaged during air raids on Liverpool, notably during the May Blitz of 1941. In the aftermath of the war, the financial problems of the owners and the general decline of docking in the city meant that the future of the Albert Dock was uncertain. Numerous plans were developed for the re-use of the buildings but none came to fruition and in 1972 the dock was finally closed. Having lain derelict for nearly ten years, the redevelopment of the dock began in 1981, when the Merseyside Development Corporation was set up, with the Albert Dock being officially re-opened in 1984.

I first encountered Chaka Khan at a vinyl record fair in the basement of a hotel in Piccadilly gardens Manchester in the early 1980's. There was a strawberry shaped picture disk of the Rufus and Chaka Khan on sale for \u00a325 (Do you love what you feel). I was sure I had seen some in Rumbelows in Hyde a week before. I nipped on the bus, snapped up 7 copies and made a killing. It was some years later when she went solo I actually appreciated her music properly.
What Cha' Gonna Do for Me is the title track of the Gold certified third solo album by American R&
B/funk singer Chaka Khan. Born Yvette Marie Stevens
March 23, 1953, frequently known as the 'Queen of Funk', she is a 10-time Grammy Award winning American singer-songwriter who gained fame in the 1970s as the frontwoman and focal point of the funk band Rufus.
While still a member of the group in 1978, Khan embarked on a successful solo career. Her signature hits, both with Rufus and as a solo performer, include 'Tell Me Something Good', 'Sweet Thing' which she wrote for her then husband Richard Holland, 'Ain't Nobody', 'I'm Every Woman', 'I Feel for You' and 'Through the Fire'.
Hunched over an antique typewriter, tapping out a melodic metallic beat, Kaile Glick brings a literal meaning to \u2018poetry of the streets\u2019. With an air of funky wit, Kaile is a welcome guest on any street. She ventured here from Toronto, Canada to set up The Spontaneous Prose Store in London. Having been turned away from Covent Garden, because she \u2018didn\u2019t have a license to stand still\u2019. Well thats Britain for you!

It was first published as the Belfast Evening Telegraph on 1 September 1870 by brothers William and George Baird. Its first edition cost half a penny and ran to four pages covering the Franco-Prussian war and local news.
The evening edition of the newspaper was originally called the Sixth Late, and Sixth Late Tele was a familiar cry made by vendors in Belfast City Centre in the past.
Its competitors are The News Letter and The Irish News but the local editions of the London-based red tops are also competitors, selling at a cheaper price than the 'Tele'.
The Belfast Telegraph was entirely broadsheet until 19 February 2005, when the Saturday morning edition was introduced and all Saturday editions were converted to compact. The weekday morning Compact Edition, launched on 22 March 2005, struggled to replicate the evening newspaper's success. Its editorial content has been much more tabloid, with a greater entertainment story count than the evening paper. Much prominence is given to English-based sport, and some general features and columns are shared with The Independent and Irish Independent.
The paper now publishes two editions daily, Belfast Telegraph final edition and the North West Telegraph which is distributed in Derry.

The Great Northern Warehouse is the former railway goods warehouse of the Great Northern Railway in Manchester city centre, England. It has been redeveloped as a car park and leisure complex. The building is located at the junction of Deansgate and Peter Street in the city centre. It was granted Grade II* listed building status on 3 October 1974.
The warehouse is a hugely impressive block, of blue brick below (and) red brick with blue brick dressings above. It was built to be fireproof with a steel frame, and built on a rectangular plan, 267 feet long by 217 feet wide and five storeys high, with 27 windows on the east and west sides and 17 windows on the north and south ends. All four sides have friezes lettered in white brick reading Great Northern Railway Company's Goods Warehouse. The warehouse was built above the Manchester and Salford Junction Canal, and a dock beneath was constructed to allow goods to be transferred to and from canal barges via shafts and a complex system of haulage using hydraulic power.[2] It is a unique survival of a three-way railway goods exchange station, serving the railway, canal and road networks of the Manchester region.
The development is owned by Capital & Regional and as of March 2013 comprises an AMC cinema, a casino, a bowling alley, bars, a Lifestyle Fitness gym, and a multi-storey car park operated by National Car Parks.

As his mosiac is made of hundreds of yellow and blue bricks (the colours of The Wires strip) this is a family club and the people named here are the true wires, who invested \u00a335 each. Replica bricks could also be purchased for \u00a325 each up until spring 2004.
Warrington Wolves are a professional rugby league football club and compete in Super League, Europe's top-level rugby league competition. They are yet to win the super league trophy, but its sure to come after lifting the Challenge Cup in August, 2009.
It was one of the original twenty-two rugby clubs in 1895 that formed the Northern Rugby Football Union, so has long roots. The winger Brian Bevan named here made his d\u00e9but for Warrington in 1945 and was one of the teams most iconic players. He is honoured by a statue at the eastern gates end of the North Stand at the entrance to the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
