Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWMENT - Covent Garden is a district in London, on the eastern fringes of the West End, between St Martin's Lane and Drury Lane. It is associated with the former fruit-and-vegetable market in the central square, now a popular shopping and tourist site, and with the Royal Opera House, itself known as Covent Garden. The district is divided by the main thoroughfare of Long Acre, north of which is given over to independent shops centred on Neal's Yard and Seven Dials, while the south contains the central square with its street performers and most of the historical buildings, theatres and entertainment facilities, including the London Transport Museum and the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.
Covent Garden falls within the London boroughs of Westminster and Camden and the parliamentary constituencies of Cities of London and Westminster and Holborn and St Pancras. The area has been served by the Piccadilly line at Covent Garden tube station since 1907
the 300-yard journey from Leicester Square tube station is the shortest in London

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RMMPBY - Following the UK's Spring Budget announcement on 15th March 2023, the drinks and hospitality industry are preparing for the upcoming changes to alcohol duty ? which will take effect on 1st August 2023. Draught products will receive additional relief, while duty on other alcohol products is set to rise in line with inflation.
According to WSTA, the forecast inflation rate of 10.1% is being used as the measure for increasing duty rates on all non-draught products, but will be adjusted according to alcohol content. In simple terms, the higher the alcohol per volume (ABV), the higher the new duty rate will be.
Duty changes in line with ABV
While some products have previously been measured on volume only ? such as still wine and cider ? from 1st August all alcohol products will be measured by alcohol volume or ABV.
What does this mean for beer?
Draught beer and cider products are protected by a 9.2% discount offered on items in 20ltr containers that are less than 8.5% and use a dispense system, meaning that, for example, the duty on a 50ltr 4% lager will not change.
However, the standard rate of duty on packaged beer that is 3.5% ABV and above will rise by 10.1%. This will increase the price of a 24 pack of 330ml 4.5% lager by ?0.69p per case.
What does this mean for wine?
Most wine will see an increase of ?0.44 per 75cl bottle, or a 20% increase in the duty paid (?2.67 vs the current ?2.23). This increase will apply to wines with an ABV between 11.5% and 14.5%.
Wines with an ABV above 15% will see a duty increase of ?0.97 (+44%) per 75cl bottle, and this increase gets bigger the higher the alcohol percentage ? duty on fortified wines of +20% ABV will go up by ?1.30 to ?4.28 per 75cl bottle.
On the other hand, wine under 11.5% ABV will be treated more favourably. Duty on wine at 10% ABV, for example, will be ?0.09 less than the current rate (at ?2.14 per 75cl bottle).
Further abolishment of separate duty rates for sparkling and still wine

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJHNRH - Lidl's slowdown of store openings is set to last until 2026, according to a construction graduate affected by recent property job cuts at the discounter.
The slowdown has also extended to recruitment, with Lidl taking on few new starters other than in areas essential to continued operation such as in stores and logistics.
Lidl, which previously opened about 50 stores a year, in February cut its official projection for 2023 to 25. The discounter has stuck to the figure, though a range of sources have said the number of stores it plans to open this year is closer to 10.
The slowdown led to the redundancy of about 12 construction graduates who were taken on in September last year, only to learn of the construction slowdown in November and job cuts in January.
They went from about 50 sites year to 12 for the financial year 2022-23, said the source. They said it was going to be seven in 2023-24 and that it wouldn't resume until 2026.
The source said Lidl had also basically stopped recruitment other than for stores and logistics roles.
Of 298 job opportunities listed on Lidl's careers page on 16 March, 281 were either in stores or as warehouse operatives. Lidl was also advertising a warehouse recruitment open day at its Exeter RDC on 20 March.
Seven vacancies were listed based at Lidl's head office in Surbiton, London. The number of head office-based roles had fluctuated during the week, having been four on 14 March, when The Grocer first approached Lidl for a comment on the numbers.
In contrast, Aldi is currently recruiting for about 100 job opportunities at its head office in Atherstone, Warwickshire, not including warehouse roles.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K56CWT - GDPR to be scrapped in favour of UK data privacy regime
The UK will scrap the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the European Union's data privacy regime, and replace it with an alternative system in the UK, the digital and culture secretary Michelle Donelan has told the Conservative Party conference.
Donelan said the proposed new system, details of which have not yet been revealed, will be simpler and clearer for businesses to navigate.
No longer will our businesses be shackled by lots of unnecessary red tape, said Donelan. We will be replacing GDPR with our own business and consumer-friendly British data protection system.
Our plan will protect consumer privacy and keep their data safe, whilst retaining our data adequacy so businesses can trade freely.
The GDPR, which aims to enhance individuals' rights to their own personal data, took effect across the UK, the EU and the European Economic Area (EEA) in May 2018. It applies to all businesses that process data held by anyone in these regions, regardless of where the business is based.
The Data Reform Bill introduced in the summer is on hold while ministers review their approach. Nadine Norris, the former digital and culture secretary, said in June that measures in the bill would increase financial penalties for those pestering people with nuisance calls and minimise the number of cookie pop-ups people see on the internet.
Donelan's speech in Birmingham came after the prime minister announced the exemption of tens of thousands of employers from reporting obligations such as gender pay gap reporting as part of a sweeping package of reforms to cut red tape.
Small and medium-sized businesses with fewer than 250 employees are currently exempt from regulatory requirements such as gender pay gap and executive pay ratio reporting.
The government yesterday increased this threshold to 500 employees for all new regulations under development and said that it would apply this to retained EU law

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K56D35 - GDPR to be scrapped in favour of UK data privacy regime
The government yesterday increased this threshold to 500 employees for all new regulations under development and said that it would apply this to retained EU law

the other and since suspended British calling points used to be Ebbsfleet International and Ashford International in Kent. Intermediate calling points in France are Calais-Fr??thun and Lille-Europe. Trains to Paris terminate at Paris-Nord. Trains to Belgium and the Netherlands serve Brussels-South and Rotterdam Centraal, before terminating at Amsterdam Centraal. Additionally, in France there are direct services from London to Marne-la-Vall??e?Chessy (Disneyland Paris) until June 2023 and seasonal direct services to the French Alps in winter.
The service is operated by 11 Class 373/1 trainsets, each with 18 coaches, and 17 Class 374 trainsets, each with 16 coaches. The trains run at up to 320 kilometres per hour (200 mph) on high-speed lines
In December 2021, Eurostar said it intended to move its administrative activities from London to Brussels as part of a forthcoming merger with Thalys which was approved in March 2022, citing problems with doing business in the UK, post Brexit, and stating that being based in an EU country would make expansion and development easier.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PP7B - Linguaphone is a global language training provider based in London that has provided self-study language courses since 1901.
Methodology
Linguaphone's self-study courses follow Linguaphone's in-house methodology of Listen, Understand, Speak. Students are encouraged to listen to the language from the beginning, to begin to read as they listen, and only to speak once they have learned to understand the language presented.
Linguaphone was established in 1901 by Jacques Roston, a translator and language teacher, born in Poland, (Ko?o), and they were the first language training company to recognise the potential of combining the traditional written course with the wax cylinder and later with records.
At the height of their popularity, Linguaphone was not only a large, international publishing house with many prestigious representative offices (for books, records, tapes and cassettes) but they also ran fashionable language schools in a number of major cities across the world, such as London, Paris, New York and Tokyo. This chain of Linguaphone Institutes could claim to be the second oldest among the international language teaching establishments (the oldest being Berlitz, founded in 1878 and known today as Berlitz International, with the controversial[why?] Berlitz method) and, as such, Linguaphone had, at one time, the privilege of being an almost automatic first choice among the famous of the day, including royalty.

Lidl Stiftung & Co. KG is a German international discount supermarket chain that operates over 10,000 stores across Europe and the United States. Headquartered in Neckarsulm, Baden-W?rttemberg, the company belongs to the Schwarz Group, which also operates the hypermarket chain Kaufland.
Lidl opened its first UK store in 1994. Since then, Lidl UK has grown consistently, and today has over 800 stores. While it is still a small player in the United Kingdom, with a grocery market share of less than 5%, its importance, along with that of continental, no-frills competitor Aldi is growing, with half of the shoppers in the United Kingdom visiting Aldi or Lidl over Christmas 2014.
The Lidl operation in the United Kingdom took a different approach than in Germany, with a focus on marketing and public relations, and providing employee benefits not required by law, including paying the independently verified living wage and offering a staff discount. Upmarket products were introduced, especially in the lead-up to Christmas. This required significant investment in marketing to produce sales growth but had an effect on Lidl's logistical operation and pressure on profits. Ronny Gottschlich, who had run Lidl UK for the six years to 2016, was responsible for this approach, which led to friction with head office, due to the cost involved. In September 2016, Gottschlich unexpectedly left and was replaced by the Austrian sales and operations director, German-national Christian H??rtnagel. Lidl continued to have ambitious investment plans in the United Kingdom, ultimately doubling the number of stores to 1,500. In the financial year of 2015, Lidl Great Britain's revenue from its over 630 stores throughout Britain was ?4.7 billion

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DTMKPY - Brains (S. A. Brain & Company Ltd.) is a regional brewery based in Cardiff, Wales. It was founded in 1882 by Samuel Arthur Brain.[1] At its peak, the company controlled more than 250 pubs in South Wales (particularly in Cardiff), Mid Wales and the West Country but the brewer sold most of its pub estate in 2022.[2] The company took over Crown Buckley Brewery in Llanelli in 1997 and Hancock's Brewery in 1999. In 2000, Brains moved to the former Hancock's Brewery just south of Cardiff Central railway station. The Old Brewery, in Cardiff city centre, has been developed into a modern bar and restaurant complex.
The company produces a range of beers under the Brains, Buckley's and Hancock's names. As part of their marketing strategy, Brains use shirt sponsorship for the Wales national rugby union team and the Crusaders Rugby League team

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DD8H50 - Lobster trap or lobster pot is a portable trap that traps lobsters or crayfish and is used in lobster fishing. In Scotland (chiefly in the north), the word creel is used to refer to a device used to catch lobsters and other crustaceans. A lobster trap can hold several lobsters. Lobster traps can be constructed of wire and wood, or metal and netting or rigid plastic. An opening permits the lobster to enter a tunnel of netting or other one-way device. Pots are sometimes constructed in two parts, called the chamber or kitchen, where there is bait, and exits into the parlour, which prevents escape. Lobster pots are usually dropped to the sea floor, one or more at a time, sometimes up to 40 or more, and are marked by a buoy so they can be picked up later.
The lobster trap was invented in 1808 by Ebenezer Thorndike of Swampscott, Massachusetts
Crayfish is a Freshwater (related) lobster
The Lobster Liberation Front (LLF) is an animal rights campaign which first appeared on the coast of Dorset, England in 2004, later spreading to Wales and Scotland. Their methods include releasing lobsters in live storage and sabotaging lobster pots or fishing boats.
The LLF consider boiling lobsters alive (the traditional method for cooking them) unacceptable and use direct action to prevent it. Their claim that lobsters, which possess a rudimentary nervous system, can feel pain, is the subject of ongoing scientific debate

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AGMNX8 - The Leyland National is an integrally-constructed British step-floor single-decker bus manufactured in large quantities between 1972 and 1985. It was developed as a joint project between two UK nationalised industries ? the National Bus Company and British Leyland. Buses were constructed at a specially built factory at the Lillyhall Industrial Estate, Workington. Styling was carried out by the Italian vehicle stylist Giovanni Michelotti, previously commissioned by both Triumph (Herald, TR4, GT6, 2000/2500, 1300, Dolomite and Stag) and Scammell lorries (Routeman GRP cab).
It was intended to replace all the rear-engined single-decker buses offered by British Leyland, including the AEC Swift, Bristol RE, single-deck Daimler Fleetline, Daimler Roadliner and Leyland Panther.
The Leyland National was built with integral, modular construction and a rear engine. All components were designed for ease of construction and replacement. Until 1978, it was always built with a roof mounted pod at the rear, housing the heating equipment, which consequently blew warm air out at roof level. At first the pod was almost the length of a bay and appeared designed to give a Trans-Atlantic feel. In 1976 a new shorter version of the roof pod was introduced along with the battery being relocated to the front under the cab. The Leyland National was available in three lengths, the majority being 10.3m and 11.3m. It was easy to spot the longer ones as its main side windows were all the same length, on the shorter models the windows were shorter except for one in the middle (where the exit doors were on dual door variants) which was the same length as on the longer models. The third length was 10.9m, specially produced for Australian operators due to stringent axle weight limits. This used the front section of the 11.3 metre bus and the rear action of the 10.3 metre bus. One 10.9 metre bus (the prototype) was sold to a Scottish operator (Rennies of Dunfirmline)

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFFP2R - J Sainsbury plc trading as Sainsbury's is the second largest chain of supermarkets in the United Kingdom, with a 16.0% share of the supermarket sector. Founded in 1869, by John James Sainsbury with a shop in Drury Lane, London, the company became the largest retailer of groceries in 1922. In 1995, Tesco overtook Sainsbury's to become the market leader, and Asda became the second largest in 2003, demoting Sainsbury's to third place for most of the subsequent period until January 2014, when Sainsbury's regained second place. In April 2019, whilst awaiting to merge with Asda, Sainsbury's was again demoted into third place as their rival placed second
The holding company, J Sainsbury plc, is split into three divisions: Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd (including convenience shops), Sainsbury's Bank and Sainsbury's Argos. The group's head office is in Sainsbury's Support Centre in Holborn Circus, City of London.
As of February 2018, the largest overall shareholder is the sovereign wealth fund of Qatar, the Qatar Investment Authority, which holds 21.99% of the company. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.
In April 2018, Sainsbury's and Asda were in talks of merging. On 25 April 2019, the Competition and Markets Authority announced it would not allow the merger due to an increase in price for consumers

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A4PJMR - Get ready for Brexit' advertising campaign launches
An information campaign urging the public to get ready for Brexit has been launched by the government.
The campaign began on Sunday with the launch of a website, gov.uk/brexit.
Billboards and social media adverts will appear in the coming days and TV adverts will air later this month.
Michael Gove, who is in charge of no-deal plans, said the adverts encourage shared responsibility for preparing to leave the EU on 31 October.
It has been reported that the campaign could cost as much as ?100m as ministers seek to inform people what they might need to do, if anything, ahead of the deadline.
Meanwhile, it has emerged the EU is considering classifying no deal as a major disaster, like an earthquake, in order to free up funds for countries affected.
Benedict Pringle, author of the politicaladvertising.co.uk blog, said that, if true, the ?100m budget would be roughly double what the National Lottery spends on advertising each year.
So if you think about how often you see a lottery advert and double it, that's how much we could be seeing the campaign over the next two months, he told the BBC.
At football grounds, in advert breaks for Coronation Street and The Great British Bake Off, this is where you'll get the biggest reach with the public.
Media captionMichael Gove: 'Everyone will have the food they need'
What does the campaign involve?
An image showing one of the campaign's billboards was issued by the Cabinet Office ahead of their rollout this week.
Leaflets, online seminars, and information stands at events will also be used.
British citizens who are intending to travel to Europe and businesses which export to the EU are among the specific groups targeted by the campaign.
The campaign encourages people and businesses to visit the government website to answer questions and receive advice on preparing for Brexit.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK5M5 - The Gladstone Pottery Museum is a working museum of a medium-sized coal-fired pottery, typical of those once common in the North Staffordshire area of England from the time of the industrial revolution in the 18th century to the mid 20th century. It is a grade II* listed building.[1]
The museum is located in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. It is also included in one of the regional routes of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.[2] Despite the name of the museum, it is a complex of buildings from two works, the Gladstone and the Roslyn.[3] The protected features include the kilns. As there are less than 50 surviving bottle ovens in Stoke-on-Trent (and only a scattering elsewhere in the UK), the museum's kilns along with others in the Longton conservation area represent a significant proportion of the national stock of the structures.
The museum is centred on the Roslyn pottery. It contains two biscuit ovens and two larger glost ovens. In addition are two enamel kilns. A tandem compound steam engine by Marshall & Sons, of Gainsborough, Lincolnshire is in place but it is turned by an electric motor. The two muffle kilns came from elsewhere.
The museum allows the visitor to explore the bottle kilns and exhibits the principal ancillary rooms: the engine house, the slip room, saggar making workshop. It shows aspects of working with clay- including hands on displays of throwing, moulding and decorating. Colour and gilding is presented as interpretive panels.
There is a gallery explaining the history of the tile: how it was pressed glazed and decorated. In one tableau the Gladstone Vase by Frederick Alfred Rhead is displayed.
There is also a gallery charting the history of sanitary ware, privies, earth closets and water closets

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PEHFHM - Flags at Half-mast
Half-mast means the flag is flown two-thirds of the way up the flagpole, with at least the height of the flag between the top of the flag and the top of the flagpole. Flags cannot be flown at half-mast on poles that are more than 45? from the vertical, but a mourning cravat can be used instead (see below).
When a flag is to be flown at half-mast, it should first be raised all the way to the top of the mast, allowed to remain there for a second and then be lowered to the half-mast position. When it is being lowered from half-mast, it should again be raised to the top of the mast for a second before being fully lowered.
When a British national flag is at half-mast, other flags on the same stand of poles should also be at half-mast or should not be flown at all. Flags of foreign nations should not be flown, unless their country is also observing mourning.
The Royal Standard never flies at half-mast. It represents the Monarchy, which is continuous, and it would therefore be inappropriate for it to fly at half-mast.
Flags should be flown at half-mast on the following occasions:
From the announcement of the death until the funeral of the Sovereign, except on Proclamation Day when flags are flown at full-mast following the proclamation.
From the announcement of the death until the funeral of a member of the Royal Family styled ?Royal Highness', subject to special commands from the Sovereign in each case.
On the day of the announcement of the death and on the day of the funeral of other members of the Royal Family, subject to special commands from the Sovereign in each case.
The funerals of foreign Rulers, subject to special commands from the Sovereign in each case.
The funerals of Prime Ministers and ex-Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom, subject to special commands from the Sovereign in each case.
The funerals of First Ministers and ex-First Ministers of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, subject to special commands f

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D9H19X - The modern combine harvester, or simply combine, is a versatile machine designed to efficiently harvest a variety of grain crops. The name derives from its combining three separate harvesting operations?reaping, threshing, and winnowing?into a single process. Among the crops harvested with a combine are wheat, oats, rye, barley, corn (maize), sorghum, soybeans, flax (linseed), sunflowers and canola. The separated straw, left lying on the field, comprises the stems and any remaining leaves of the crop with limited nutrients left in it: the straw is then either chopped, spread on the field and ploughed back in or baled for bedding and limited-feed for livestock.
Combine harvesters are one of the most economically important labour saving inventions, significantly reducing the fraction of the population engaged in agriculture
John Deere is the brand name of Deere & Company, an American corporation that manufactures agricultural, construction, and forestry machinery, diesel engines, drivetrains (axles, transmissions, gearboxes) used in heavy equipment, and lawn care equipment

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PBRY43 - Barley (Hordeum vulgare), a member of the grass family, is a major cereal grain grown in temperate climates globally. It was one of the first cultivated grains, particularly in Eurasia as early as 10,000 years ago. Barley has been used as animal fodder, as a source of fermentable material for beer and certain distilled beverages, and as a component of various health foods. It is used in soups and stews, and in barley bread of various cultures. Barley grains are commonly made into malt in a traditional and ancient method of preparation.
In 2014, barley was ranked fourth among grains in quantity produced (144 million tonnes) behind maize, rice and wheat.

Poundworld's product range consisted of over 6,000 items including groceries, health and beauty, toiletries, cleaning products and pet care. some of them known brands
At its peak it had 335 stores in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. In 2014, it was planning to open 150 new stores within three years.
Its larger rival in the market was Poundland. A series on BBC One entitled Pound Shop Wars, broadcast between 2012 and 2015, concerned Poundworld and its rivals.
As well as all of its ?1 lines, Poundworld introduced a range of multi-price products across its estate of stores in 2017 to offer customers 'More Choice, More Savings'.
Suffering intense competition from the addition of multi-price products, combined with difficulties arising from the weak pound, Poundworld entered administration in June 2018. Closing sales began in stores late that month. In July 2018, Poundworld confirmed that all stores were to close by 10 August 2018 after rescue talks with original founder Chris Edwards failed

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy MXFF39 - Harris Tweed is a tweed cloth that is handwoven by islanders at their homes in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, finished in the Outer Hebrides, and made from pure virgin wool dyed and spun in the Outer Hebrides. This definition, quality standards and protection of the Harris Tweed name are enshrined in the Harris Tweed Act 1993. For centuries, the islanders of Lewis and Harris, the Uists, Benbecula and Barra have woven cloth by hand, calling it 'cl?-m?r' in the original Gaelic or 'big cloth'.
Originally, this handmade fabric was woven by crofters for familial use, ideal for protection against the colder climate of the North of Scotland. Surplus cloth was often traded or used as barter, eventually becoming a form of currency amongst the islanders. For example, it was not unusual for rents to be paid in blankets or lengths of cloth. By the end of the 18th century, the spinning of wool yarn from local raw materials was a staple industry for crofters. Finished handmade cloth was exported to the Scottish mainland and traded along with other commodities produced by the Islanders, such as dry hides, goat and deer skins.
The original name of the cloth was tweel, Scots for twill, it being woven in a twilled rather than a plain pattern. A traditional story has the name coming about almost by chance. Around 1830, a London merchant received a letter from a Hawick firm about some tweels. The London merchant misinterpreted the handwriting, understanding it to be a trade-name taken from the river Tweed that flows through the Scottish Borders. Subsequently, the goods were advertised as Tweed, and the name has remained ever since

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H542X8 - Starting with a small grocery business begun by his father, William Lever and his brother James entered the soap business in 1885 by buying a small soap works in Warrington.
The brothers teamed up with a Bolton chemist, William Hough Watson, who became an early business partner. Watson invented the process which resulted in a new soap, using glycerin and vegetable oils such as palm oil, rather than tallow.
The resulting soap was a good, free-lathering soap, at first named Honey Soap then later named Sunlight Soap. Production reached 450 tons per week by 1888. Larger premises were built on marshes at Bromborough Pool on the Wirral Peninsula at what became Port Sunlight.
Though the company was named Lever Brothers, William Lever's brother and co-director James never took a major part in running the business. He fell ill in 1895, probably as a result of diabetes, and resigned his directorship two years later

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEEF91 - Sandy Row is a street in south Belfast, Northern Ireland. It lends its name to the surrounding residential community, which is predominantly Protestant working-class. The Sandy Row area had a population of 2,153 in 2001. It is a staunchly loyalist area of Belfast, being a traditional heartland for affiliation with the paramilitary Ulster Defence Association (UDA) and the Orange Order.
Sandy Row is situated in south Belfast, beginning at the edge of the city centre, close to the Europa Hotel. The road runs south from the Boyne Bridge (formerly the Saltwater Bridge) over the old Dublin railway line beside Great Victoria Street station, then crosses the Donegall Road and ends at the bottom of the Lisburn Road. At the north end of the road was the famous Murray's tobacco factory, which was first opened in 1810, while at the other is a large Orange hall.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEEG4B - Murals in Northern Ireland have become symbols of Northern Ireland, depicting the region's past and present political and religious divisions.
Belfast and Derry contain arguably the most famous political murals in Europe. It is believed that almost 2,000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. In 2014, the book, The Belfast Mural Guide estimated that, in Belfast, there were approximately 300 quality murals on display, with many more in varying degrees of age and decay. Murals commemorate, communicate and display aspects of culture and history. The themes of murals often reflect what is important to a particular community. A mural therefore exists to express an idea or message and could generally be seen as reflecting values held dear to that community.
In Irish republican areas the themes of murals can range from the 1981 Irish hunger strike, with particular emphasis on strike leader Bobby Sands
murals of international solidarity with revolutionary groups are equally common, as are those which highlight a particular issue, for example the Ballymurphy Massacre or the McGurk's Bar bombing. In working class unionist communities, murals are used to promote Ulster loyalist paramilitary groups such as the Ulster Defence Association and Ulster Volunteer Force and commemorate their deceased members. However traditional themes such as William III of England and the Battle of the Boyne, the Battle of the Somme and the 36th Ulster Division are equally common

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBAPTP - Nineteen Eighty-Four, often published as 1984, is a dystopian novel by English writer George Orwell published in June 1949. The novel is set in the year 1984 when most of the world population have become victims of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance and propaganda.
In the novel, Great Britain (Airstrip One) has become a province of a superstate named Oceania. Oceania is ruled by the Party, who employ the Thought Police to persecute individualism and independent thinking. The Party's leader is Big Brother, who enjoys an intense cult of personality but may not even exist. The protagonist of the novel, Winston Smith, is a rank-and-file Party member. Smith is an outwardly diligent and skillful worker, but he secretly hates the Party and dreams of rebellion against Big Brother. Smith rebels by entering a forbidden relationship with fellow employee Julia.
As literary political fiction and dystopian science-fiction, Nineteen Eighty-Four is a classic novel in content, plot, and style. Many of its terms and concepts, such as Big Brother, doublethink, thoughtcrime, Newspeak, Room 101, telescreen, 2 + 2 = 5, and memory hole, have entered into common usage since its publication in 1949. Nineteen Eighty-Four popularised the adjective Orwellian, which connotes official deception, secret surveillance, brazenly misleading terminology and manipulation of recorded history by a totalitarian or authoritarian state. In 2005, the novel was chosen by Time magazine as one of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005. It was awarded a place on both lists of Modern Library 100 Best Novels, reaching number 13 on the editors' list, and 6 on the readers' list. In 2003, the novel was listed at number 8 on the BBC's survey The Big Read

Percutaneous estradiol gel can be prescribed at low doses.
Relief of menopausal symptoms can begin as early as 2 weeks after starting treatment
Treatment with estradiol gel maintains or increases bone mineral density.
No large randomized, controlled trials have explored the effect of estradiol gel on coronary artery disease. It appears to have metabolic effects similar to those of oral estradiol
Because percutaneous estradiol stimulates the endometrium, women with an intact uterus should also take a progestogen
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT), also known as menopausal hormone therapy or postmenopausal hormone therapy, is a form of hormone therapy used to treat symptoms associated with female menopause. These symptoms can include hot flashes, vaginal atrophy, accelerated skin aging, vaginal dryness, decreased muscle mass, sexual dysfunction, and bone loss. They are in large part related to the diminished levels of sex hormones that occur during menopause.
Estrogens and progestogens are the main hormone drugs used in HRT. Progesterone is the main female sex hormone that occurs naturally and is also manufactured into a drug that is used in menopausal hormone therapy. Although both classes of hormones can have symptomatic benefit, progestogen is specifically added to estrogen regimens when the uterus is present to avoid the increased risk of endometrial cancer. Unopposed estrogen therapy promotes endometrial hyperplasia and increases the risk of cancer, while progestogen reduces this risk. Androgens like testosterone are sometimes used as well. HRT is available through a variety of different routes.
The long-term effects of HRT on most organ systems vary by age and time since the last physiological exposure to hormones, and there can be large differences in individual regimens, factors which have made analyzing effects difficult

Snickers bars to be called Marathon again after nearly 30 years
Retro confectionery on sale for next three months in Morrisons.
Chocolate nostalgia fans are in for a treat after it was announced that the much-loved Snickers bars will be sold under their former name, Marathon, for a limited time.
In the United Kingdom and Ireland, Snickers was sold under the brand name Marathon until July 19, 1990.
England had recently lost on penalties to West Germany at the World Cup in Italy, Elton John was at No 1 with one of his lesser known hits, Sacrifice, and Marathon's name changed to what it was branded everywhere else in the world.
But limited edition retro Marathon bars are now on sale in Morrisons supermarkets, where they will be available for the next three months.
Mars brand director Gemma Buggins told the Mail on Sunday: Bringing the Marathon bar branding back for a limited time really was a no-brainer.
It's a great way to celebrate more than 85 years of Mars making chocolate in the UK and we hope this serves as a wonderful treat for fans of Snickers who remember when it was called Marathon.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT2GE - Today we are launching our new public information campaign, ?Get Ready for Brexit', which will run across television, social media, billboards and other platforms.
Government research shows that only 50% of the population think it's likely the UK will leave the EU on 31 October, 42% of small-to-medium sized businesses are unsure of how they can get ready and just 31% of the British public have looked for information on how to prepare for Brexit.
The campaign will tackle this head on by setting out what all members of the public and business owners might need to do, if anything, to get ready to leave the EU on 31 October.
Audiences including UK citizens intending to travel to Europe and all exporters to the EU will be targeted, alongside groups requiring particular information such as the equine industry and legal professions. Some of the key actions audiences need to take include:
Acquiring an Economic Operator Registration and Identification number to export to the EU. Businesses that are VAT registered will automatically issued an EORI number, but micro businesses still need to register themselves.
Obtaining the correct documents to transport goods at the border.
Applying for the vital support packages available for businesses, such as grants.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy JH6749 - Brexit: What is the Northern Ireland Protocol?
Northern Ireland Protocol - agreed with the European Union (EU) in 2019 - has been a source of tension since it came into force at the start of 2021.
Special trading arrangements were needed for Northern Ireland after the UK voted for Brexit in 2016. This is because it's the only part of the UK with a land border with an EU country - the Republic of Ireland.
Before Brexit, it was easy to transport goods across this border because both sides had the same EU trade rules. No checks or paperwork were necessary.
After Brexit, a new system was needed because the EU has strict food rules and requires border checks when certain goods - such as milk and eggs - arrive from non-EU countries.
UK and the EU agreed that protecting the 1998 Northern Ireland peace deal - the Good Friday Agreement - was an absolute priority. So, both sides signed the Northern Ireland Protocol as part of the Brexit withdrawal agreement, which is now part of international law.
Foreign Secretary Liz Truss says the Protocol has caused problems which had not been expected when the agreement was signed.
The government now wants to ditch parts of the deal.
It wants to create red lanes and green lanes for goods imported from Britain into Northern Ireland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBAPTK - Nineteen Eighty-Four, often published as 1984, is a dystopian novel by English writer George Orwell published in June 1949.
