Cummings denied he had broken any rules in a press conference a few days later. Durham Constabulary investigated the trip, concluding there may have been a minor breach, but did not take any further action. The scandal led to criticism from Members of Parliament (MPs) within and outside the ruling Conservative Party, backlash in the media and from the public, and calls for Cummings to be sacked or resign. Prominent politicians in the government, including Johnson, rejected these and expressed support for Cummings. Polling suggested that support for the Conservative Party and confidence in the British government's pandemic response fell as a result of the scandal.

The museum is regarded as the birthplace of the modern co-operative movement. It is located in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England.

31 Toad Lane was originally an 18th-century warehouse, on a busy road which then extended to the centre of the town. In 1844 the Co-operative Society rented the ground floor, the upper floors being used by the Methodist society. A counter was made with a plank on barrels, and the shop began. From 1849 the Co-op rented the whole building and developed a library, meeting room, and boot and shoe department. In the 1860s other buildings were rented and in 1867 the society moved out to new purpose-built premises. The building became a pet shop
The Rochdale Pioneers quickly became an inspiration for a wide part of the society, and the co-operative movement started to be known nationally and internationally. As a result, the Co-operative Union purchased the building at 31 Toad Lane in 1925, expressly to create a museum that enhanced the birthplace of co-operation. The museum opened for the first time in 1931.
In the 1970s, the museum was closed for some years because structural problems were found in the building
but it was successfully restored. Rochdale Council redeveloped the remaining section of Toad Lane outside of the building, which had been a cul-de-sac since the 1960s. The new characteristics of the area were cobbled streets, flanked by 19th-century gas lamps and a unique Victorian post-box.

One of city's oldest and most popular pubs never goes by its real name
Taking up a huge chunk of the corner of Lime Street and Copperas Hill, ?The Big House' is one of the city's most recognisable boozers.
The Vines - to use its official name - is the sister pub of the Philharmonic and is on CAMRA's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors.
The pub was built a whopping 150 years ago by Albert B Vines. In 1907, Walkers took over and rebuilt the pub into an ornate style.
Nowadays, it is known for good beer, live music and karaoke.
But why is it referred to as The Big House?
Echo readers James Parr said: I think it's because it used to be a jail. I remember one of my dad's mates telling me that.
It's been a gin palace and an old billiards room - could it have once been a prison, too?
We spoke to one of the managers at the Vines, Ron Taylor. He said: I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I think it's just called the Big House because it's... big.

The Georgian frontage was added in 1753 although the size of the building was reduced in the 1890s when a decline in trade resulted in part of the front being turned into a shop. It wasn't until 1936 that the Kings left private ownership and was bought by the Friary Brewery of Guildford which later became part of Allied Breweries.
We've had a few famous guests over the years including Tsar Peter the Great (who left without paying his bill!) as well as some European royalty who met here in 1814 to discuss post war Europe after the Battle of Trafalgar. Tsar Peter the Great's visit is commemorated by a plaque on the front of the building which was unveiled in 1998 by the Russian Ambassador to commemorate the tricentenary of the visit.

THE HISTORY OF MEW, LANGTON AND COMPANY by Nick Redman, Whitbread's Company Archivist
In 1643 a Mr. Mewes held five plots of land in the Isle of Wight's capital. Although no document has been found that actually links him with the Mew family, there may well have been a connection. We do know that towards the end of the 18th century Benjamin Mew and his brother formed a partnership called Mew & Co. Brewers, with a brewery in Newport and another in Lymington. They also owned a number of pubs.
In 1850 the company was granted a royal warrant to supply Queen Victoria when she was in residence at Osborne House on the island. Soon afterwards the Newport plant was renamed the Royal Brewery. The firm continued to supply the Royal Household until George V's death in 1936. A 1911 price list includes Osborne Pale Ale and XXXS Nutritious Stout.
By 1965, the company had decided to accept a ?1.5m merger offer from Strong & Co Ltd of Romsey. In 1969, bottling and brewing ceased at Newport, and the Royal Brewery became a distribution centre. By the end of the year Strong's had become part of the Whitbread group, and the 144 Mew houses on the island were soon being supplied with both company's products.
In 1973 the newly-established Whitbread Wessex built extensions to the bottled and draught beer storage area, and sited a new tobacco, wine and spirit warehouse in the old Mew Langton mineral water factory.
Five years ago, Whitbread began examining the future of its pubs on the island, which then numbered 112. Many were sold or closed. The Newport depot continued to operate until February this year

In 1824, Thomas Usher and his wife Hannah acquired a small brewery in Back Street, Trowbridge, renaming it Usher's Wiltshire Brewery. In 1844, the couple's three sons joined the partnership, allowing the parents to retire in 1869. After this, the beers and brand developed a loyal following, facilitating a quick expansion of the company through the 19th century. In 1887, the partnership took over Fanshaw & Palmer of Donnington, Berkshire. This resulted in the registration in 1889 of Usher's Wiltshire Brewery Ltd to combine the two organisations. From its date of formation until the Second World War, the company acquired some fifteen independent breweries and their associated public house premises.
After 1945, the company acquired Conigre House and gardens in Trowbridge, then the home of the local Liberal Club, enabling it to double the scale of its brewery and bottling plant.
Having dropped the apostrophe from its registered name in 1951, in 1960 the company agreed to a takeover bid from the acquisitive Watney Mann. The joint assets included the brewery sites in both London (soon closed) and Trowbridge, together with 900 pubs. In 1964, the company changed its registered name to Ushers Brewers Ltd. Watney Mann merged with Grand Metropolitan Hotels in 1972.
In 1991 Roger North, the MD of Grand Met Brewing led a management buyout creating a reconstituted Ushers Brewers Ltd, with an estate of smaller pubs deemed by Grand Metropolitan to be too small or not capable of redevelopment. The new company began acquiring pubs to provide a distribution network, under a holding company called Innspired Pubs. By March 1997 the company owned 541 pubs and floated on the London Stock Exchange after a previous float had been aborted in 1995
Following a profit warning, North took the company private again in December 1998 with the backing of Alchemy Partners.

Brewery
Originally a steam brewery, with the engines now being powered by electricity, Arkell's is a tower brewery which works on the principle that raw materials are fed into the top of the building and beer comes out in casks at the bottom.
The brewery building is a Grade II listed building and the site has been designated an Urban Conservation Area by Swindon Borough Council.
Distribution
The brewery owns 92 pubs in the Swindon area and surrounds, including locations in Oxford, Newbury, Reading, Cheltenham, Gloucester and Ascot
and sells its products to free houses in the Thames Valley and London.
In 2005, the brewery entered into a contract with rail company First Great Western to have its beer stocked in their buffet cars

Life
Edward Stone was born in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire, England, in 1702. His parents were Edward Stone, a gentleman farmer, and his first wife Elizabeth Reynolds. His mother having died, his father took a second wife, Elizabeth Grubb, in 1707
the Grubb family was to play a major role in Stone's life.
Stone went to Wadham College, Oxford, in 1720, where in 1730 he became a Fellow. In 1728 or 1729 he was ordained deacon and priest, and served as curate at Charlton-on-Otmoor.
Stone at one time lived on the site of the Hitchman Brewery in West Street, Chipping Norton, where a blue plaque has now been erected. He was buried in Horsenden in 1768
He experimented by drying a pound of willow bark and creating a powder which he gave to about fifty persons: it was consistently found to be a powerful astringent and very efficacious in curing agues and intermitting disorders.' He had discovered salicylic acid, the principal metabolite of aspirin. On 25 April 1763, he sent a letter announcing his discovery to George Parker, 2nd Earl of Macclesfield, President of the Royal Society.
A less corrosive compound of salicylic acid, acetylsalicylic acid, produced by reacting sodium salicylate with acetyl chloride, was developed from 1897 by Felix Hoffmann and Arthur Eichengr?n. It was marketed by Bayer under the name Aspirin which was registered as a trade name on 23 January 1899. There is little evidence that Stone's idea was taken up by the medical profession. Jeffreys could only find one doctor in Hertfordshire and one pharmacist in Bath who tried using willow bark as a cure for the ague. The latter described it as cheaper than quinine, but never published any findings about its efficacy

Cider has a lengthy history in the UK dating back to around the 12th Century and possibly even earlier. In terms of Gwatkin Cidery's history, Denis says our orchards are first marked on our 1830 map, so cider making has a long tradition on our farm, which started out as a grange for the nearby abbey in 1147.
Gwatkin Cidery is a uniquely family-owned and operated farm, business, and home. We are one of the largest if not the largest traditional cider makers in Britain. By traditional we mean that we only allow natural fermentation to occur, we don't use sulphites to kill off the natural yeast and substitute them with a wine yeast, says Denis. They make and sell about 35 ciders and perrys (fermented pear) including seasonal rotations and a few local beer selections.
All of the cider produced at Gwatkin is packaged and sold in bottles as most traditional-style cideries do. While there is no inherent difference to taste of ciders sold in cans versus bottles, caning and caning lines are a rather modern technology. A few of the ciders Gwatkin Cidery makes include Kingstone Black, Golden Valley Scrumpy, award winning Yarlington Mill Cider, and Stoke Red Cider.
For Denis, his favorite thing about cider making is tasting the end product after months of slow fermentation in our wooden barrels. He emphasized that cider is naturally fermented by wild yeasts, a taste of the past before Louis Pasteur started advising other cider makers in the late nineteenth century.

In October 2016, Vic Charlesworth, Curator of the Warrington Masonic Museum, became aware of the existence of a Mason's grave in the cemetery at St Thomas Church, Stockton Heath, Warrington. Vic visited the grave and discovered that the memorial and gravestones were in a very poor condition
Vic asked Caroline Crook, Archivist at Warrington Masonic Museum, to research the history of William Brittain Roberts, the Mason buried in that grave, and she discovered that William was born in London, worked in Liverpool for a time, where his son was born, and then became head brewer for Greenall Whitley, living in Stockton Heath at Wilderspool House.
At the time of his death in 1909, William lived at Bleak House in Lymm, a village neighbouring Warrington. His only son, Victor George, a medical student, married May Houghton in 1914. Victor was killed in action, in the First World War, in 1918. They had no children and therefore no direct descendants. William's wife, Hilda Marian Roberts, passed away in 1936.
William was initiated into Royal Victoria Lodge No 1013 in Liverpool, on 6 February 1884, resigning in 1890. He later joined Merchants' Lodge No 241, Liverpool, (1886-92 and 1905-07), Lodge of Lights No 148, Warrington, (1887-1909) and Lathom Lodge No 2229, Southport, (1904-1909). In 1903 William was a founder member and the first senior warden of Lodge of Friendship No 2963.
Vic applied to the West Lancashire Freemasons' Charity Communities Grants Committee requesting funding to enable William's memorial and gravestone to be renovated and a grant was made earlier this year. The restoration work has now been completed and is, once again, a fitting tribute to a loyal Mason.
William's memorial is very close to the main entrance to St Thomas's Church

Ground was broke at the new site in 2002 and bucked the common trend of modern stadia by including terracing areas rather than being an all-seater stadium, with the South and West stands both containing terracing It also has enormous pitch dimensions of 120 m x 74 m, as requested by Warrington's head coach of the time, Paul Cullen, due to his desire to play expansive rugby. On 3 March 2011, the club announced that the corners of the East Stand at the stadium would be filled in to create a further 2,000 spaces made up of seating and terracing for the 2012 season. The stadium capacity, set at 15,000 for the first sell-out home match against St. Helens in 2012, was increased to 15,200 and can grow to 15,693 as the club proves it can handle the bigger crowds and get extra safety certificates. The club has also announced plans to increase the stadium's capacity to around 22,000 should the need arise.

The brewery was founded by Adrian Slater, a skilled brewer, and Roger Langford, a farmer with space in a barn and a love for proper beer. Roger's farm is in Weetwood Common, near Tarporley in Cheshire and the brewery took the name.
From day one, the brewery combined in-depth knowledge of a very large brewery with the passion, dedication, service and humility of a small business. Weetwood's enduring reputation for consistency and quality developed and a large, loyal following resulted.
Word spread, awards were won and output increased. A talented team of skilled people was built up and a new, bigger brewery was built. In 2014, Adrian and Roger took a well-deserved step back and new owners Phil McLaughlin and Laura Humby arrived. Phil and Laura are a brother-and-sister team who bring passion, experience and enthusiasm to continue to produce and supply great beers.
The founders remain involved along with most, if not all, of the original customers, still serving Weetwood Ales for beer lovers who come back for another.

Its present incarnation is the work of the team behind nearby Spitalfields gastropub The Culpeper, of gigantic rooftop-gherkin fame. Architect Gareth Roberts and business partner Nico Treguer have revamped the building by adding two extra floors, a rooftop terrace and a stonking street-level restaurant/bar, a much-needed addition to the kebab shops that more commonly characterise this end of Brick Lane.
Interiors avoid the traps of steampunk junk and Edison bulb-lit bareness, instead balancing whitewashed walls and potted plants with cleverly sourced vintage elements such as a Rosso Levanto marble counter, sapphire velvet chairs in the hallways and a 50s terrazzo-patterned floor. While the rooms are compact to say the least, for a flat rate of ?100 (including a welcome drink and breakfast) it's a seductive option for staycationers, solo travellers and loved-up duos who fancy travelling no further than a few flights of stairs when going from dinner to duvet.

It was founded in 1740 on the bank of the Molendinar Burn by Hugh and Robert Tennent. It is owned by C&C Group plc, which purchased the Tennent Caledonian Breweries subsidiary in late August 2009 from Belgian brewing company Anheuser-Busch InBev (formerly known as InBev).
The company produces Tennent's Lager, Scotland's market leading brand of pale lager since it was first produced at the Wellpark Brewery in 1885.
Wellpark Brewery was originally known as the Drygate Brewery. It was founded as H & R Tennent in 1740 at Drygate Bridge, near Glasgow Cathedral, by Hugh and Robert Tennent, although brewing had taken place at the same site on the banks of the Molendinar Burn by their ancestor, Robert Tennent, since 1556, making it the oldest continuous commercial concern in Glasgow.
Hugh Tennent's sons, John and Robert, continued the family business, trading as J & R Tennent from 1769. The business expanded in the 1790s when the Tennent family purchased the neighbouring brewery of William McLehose, and renamed the 5-acre (20,000 m2) site Wellpark Brewery.
The firm originally brewed stout and strong export ales. By the mid-19th century J&R Tennent was the world's largest bottled beer exporter. Robert Tennent died in 1826 and John Tennent in 1827. Hugh Tennent (the eldest son of Robert) then assumed control of the business. Hugh Tennent retired in 1855 with his fifth son, Charles Tennent, taking over, but he died in 1864, some months before his father. The brewery was subsequently operated by trustees on behalf of Charles Tennent's sons, Archibald and Hugh.
In 1884 Hugh Tennent took control of the company and first brewed Tennent's lager in 1885. He later built a new lager brewery on the Wellpark site, which was begun in 1889 and completed in 1891. J&R Tennent produced the first draught lager in 1924, the first canned lager in 1935 and the first keg lager in 1963.

In 1859, Frederic Robinson took over from George and bought a warehouse to the rear of the inn to expand brewing capacity. As a result, Robinsons ale became available at pubs around the Stockport area. To control the quality of ale sold, Frederic began to purchase public houses. From 1878 until his death in 1890, Frederic established twelve pubs which exclusively served his ale. This was the beginning of what was to become an estate of over 300 pubs across the North West of England and North Wales.
The Unicorn Brewery still rests on the foundations of the public house on Lower Hillgate in Stockport.
The brewery continues to be run by the fifth and sixth generations of the Robinson family. The company took over Hartley's Brewery in Ulverston in 1982, closing it and transferring the brewing of Hartley's beers to Stockport in 1991. Robinsons have acquired a number of other breweries over the years, including John Heginbotham, Stalybridge (1915)
T. Schofield & Son, Ashton under Lyne (1926)

The firm still operates from its original town centre site, although the original brewery was demolished in 2011, and part of its beer business was sold to Marston's in March 2015. Today, Thwaites still produces beer but it in much smaller quantities as it only sells to its own estate of pubs, inns and hotels. In 1999, the Mitchell brewery in Lancaster closed down, and was bought in part by Thwaites. Lancaster Bomber has since been available from Thwaites public houses after being acquired in the takeover. Lancaster Bomber is now brewed by Marston's, as is Wainwright, the other top-selling Thwaite's beer.

His son Stanley Thatcher, born in 1910, began selling draught cider to pubs in Somerset and the company's presence in the area grew. The company is still family owned and employs around 200 people. In 1992 Martin took over from his father, John Thatcher, as managing director.
It has 500 acres of its own orchard, as well as using apples from other growers in the area. Alongside its bush orchards, Thatchers has pioneered a method of growing its apple trees in a hedgerow style. Trained on wires, this enables easier harvesting and also helps to ensure the fruit has the optimum combination of sunlight and rain. It has also led to the development of a new bespoke harvester. At the height of season, Thatchers can press 500 tonnes of apples per day. Thatchers also maintains an exhibition orchard in which over 458 different varieties of apple tree are grown. Many of the traditional ciders produced at Myrtle Farm are matured in 100-year-old oak vats, which gives the cider a distinctive taste.
In addition to its cider production, Myrtle Farm is the UK's biggest processor of blackcurrants, dealing with 90 per cent of the UK's total crop, which it processes on behalf of Ribena.
Thatchers Cider is available in many sports clubs and events across the South West. They are involved with teams including Winscombe R.F.C., Bath Rugby, Somerset County Cricket Club, Bristol Rugby, Bristol City, Yeovil Town, Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, Bristol Rovers, Plymouth Argyle F.C, Exeter City and Torquay United.

Appleton appeared in the Domesday survey as Epeltune, meaning 'the tun where the apples grew'.
Each June, the village hosts the ceremony of 'Bawming the Thorn'. The current form of the ceremony dates from the 19th century, when it was part of the village's 'walking day'. It involved children from Appleton Thorn Primary School walking through the village and holding sports and games at the school. This now takes place at the village hall. The ceremony stopped in the 1930s, but was revived by the then headmaster, Mr Bob Jones in the early 1970s. 'Bawming the Thorn' occurs on the Saturday nearest to Midsummer's Day.
Thorn Cross (HM Prison) is in Appleton Thorn, on the site formerly occupied by Royal Naval Air Station HMS Blackcap, a wartime aircrew training and aircraft repair airfield. There are a number of graves of aircrew who died at HMS Blackcap, mainly in flying accidents, in St Cross churchyard, known locally as 'the war graves'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy R9GTDP - The Jewellery Quarter is an area of central Birmingham, UK. Situated in the north western area of the Birmingham City Centre, there is a population of around 19,000 people in a 1.07-square-kilometre (264-acre) area.
The Jewellery Quarter is Europe's largest concentration of businesses involved in the jewellery trade, which produces 40% of all the jewellery made in the UK. It is also home to the world's largest Assay Office, which hallmarks around 12 million items a year. Historically the Jewellery Quarter has been the birthplace of many pioneering advancements in industrial technology.
At its peak in the early 1900s the Jewellery Quarter employed over 30,000 people, however due to foreign competition and lack of demand, the industry declined throughout the 20th century. The area is now being transformed into an urban village and hub for creative businesses, whilst maintaining its urban fabric. Its historical importance has led to numerous conservation schemes and it is an Anchor Point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
A survey of 1553 named one of the first goldsmiths of Birmingham, Roger Pemberton. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Birmingham prospered from the Industrial Revolution and developed into a large industrial town, manufacturing a vast range of products, often from various metals. Many large foundries and glassworks attracted workers from all areas of Britain. A considerable trade developed in the manufacture of gilt buttons, cap badges, pins and small metal toys.
According to the Birmingham Directory of 1780, there were 26 jewellers at the time. Because the definition of a jeweller was not explained in the directory, it is thought that it may contain many irregularities and the number of actual jewellers may be lower. It is thought that by the start of the 19th century, there were around 12 jewellery manufacturing companies, employing approximately 400 people.

Peveril of the Peak (1823) is the longest novel by Sir Walter Scott. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D9466N - Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem is a Grade II listed public house in Nottingham which claims to have been established in 1189, although there is no documentation to verify this date. The building rests against Castle Rock, upon which Nottingham Castle is built, and is attached to several caves, carved out of the soft sandstone. These were reputedly originally used as a brewhouse for the castle, dating from the medieval period.
The earliest known reference to the name Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem was in 1799. Before being known by its current name, it is believed that the pub was named The Pilgrim and references to this name date back to 1751. The current name is believed to come from the belief that pilgrims or crusaders would stop at the inn on their journey to Jerusalem. Some elements of the pub's name are misunderstood in the modern day: Ye Olde is properly pronounced the old and trip refers to a stop on a journey, rather than the journey itself.
Locals often use a shortened version of the name, the Trip.
Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem is one of several pubs claiming to be the oldest in England ? others that claim to be the oldest include Ye Olde Salutation Inn and The Bell Inn, also in Nottingham
The pub claims that it was established in 1189 AD ? the year that Richard the Lionheart became king and Pope Gregory VIII called for a Third Crusade to the Holy Land
however, there is no documentation to verify this date. Evidence suggests that caves in the rock against which the pub is built were used as a brewhouse for Nottingham Castle, and may date from around the time the castle was built in 1067.
The oldest parts of the current building were likely constructed between 1650 and 1660, though a map by John Speed shows a previous building in existence in 1610. By 1751 the building was being used as an inn with the name The Pilgrim, and was shortly after that date purchased by William Standford

The name comes from prohibition-era Ireland when bootleggers of illegal Poit??n would leave a sod of peat, painted white, outside their door so people knew where to find their booze.
The Sods family has grown considerably in recent years and has refused to sacrifice on quality. founded in 1876 by leading Victorian industrialists, statesmen and professionals for the sole purpose of providing a venue where members could meet on a regular basis in comfortable surroundings to enjoy each others company and meaningful conversation.
The Club offered an excellent opportunity for business ideas, suggestions and deals to be discussed considering that in those early days there was no other means of communication except for a rather hit and miss postal service. In the modern idiom the Club provided what is now known as ?net working'.
The building occupied by the Warrington Club in Bold Street was purpose built using monies raised by the original 76 founder members. Those familiar with Warrington will no doubt recognise the names of some of the founder members.
Arthur Bennett (1862- 1931) a chartered accountant, was a remarkable character. He served as a Councellor and Alderman for many years and had hopes of making Warrington a ?Garden City'. Sadly, the Great War shattered the dream but the quality of the one completed terrace of houses in Sankey gives some evidence of his vision. The foundation stone was laid by the great pioneer of garden cities, Ebenezer Howard. Bennett was a prolific writer. His ?Dream of a Warringtonian', if romanticised, is still a very readable history of our 1,000 year old town, and his collection of poems ?Songs of a Chartered Accountant' posesses both warmth and charm. John, Earnest Crosfield of Joseph Crosfield & Sons Ltd. Finally, Sir Gilbert Greenall MP, Lieut Col. Greenall and Captain Grenall of the Greenall Whitley Brewery. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DJ7BA3 - The original business was renamed Peter Walker & Son. Andrew further expanded the business south, building new brewing facilities in both Warrington (Walkers of Warrington, founded in 1864), and Burton.
In 1879, on the death of his father, Andrew gained control of the business, and in 1890 converted the private company into the publicly listed Peter Walker & Son Warrington & Burton Ltd. The later Sir Andrew pioneered many of the innovations in brewing production, beer distribution and pub management that we take for granted today, including patenting the Burton Union System. The group had a chain of pubs in the Liverpool and the north west of England, many of which today still carry the slogan Walkers Warrington Ale in their frosted glass.
After his death in 1893, with his son William now chairman, the company merged with Cains Brewery in 1921, and then Tetley's Brewery of Leeds in 1960, to form Tetley Walker. This company was one of the founding partners of Allied Breweries.

In 1918 the brewery was bought by J. Sykes & Company. The combined company began to expand further, acquiring several public houses in the Wirral area and the Spraggs Brewery in 1919. In 1923, the company bought the newly merged Walker Cains' Brewery in Liverpool's Stanhope Street following that company's decision to focus production at its Warrington brewery. There was one last push for expansion in 1927, when the firm acquired Joseph Jones & Co. in Knotty Ash. A further 70 public houses were added as a result.
In 1962, Higsons purchased a new head office in North Street, Liverpool. 1974 saw the brewery merge with James Mellor & Sons. In 1978, Higsons acquired the Bent's Brewery, which was based next to its North Street head office. The vendor was the Bass Brewery. Boddingtons of Manchester acquired Higsons in 1985 but decided to abandon brewing in 1989 to focus on its pubs. Boddingtons' brewing arm was sold to Whitbread in 1990 which then subsequently closed the Higsons Stanhope brewery.

Marlborough is a beautiful, ancient town bristling with fine buildings - and they don't come much better than The Bear Hotel.
Arkell's bought the pub in 1987 and these days there is no mistaking a place that is enthusiatically listed in The Good Pub Guide.
With its front in the High Street, facing the old Town Hall, and its side in The Parade, The Bear Hotel is a magnificent sight. It is late 19th century Jacobean and Georgian in style and has looked this way since 1889 after it was luxuriously re-built, but there had been an inn here at least by 1757.
A directory of 1914 was emphatic in its praise of The Bear Hotel. The house is fitted with all the latest and best appliances, it said. Wines, spirits and cigars of the finest quality and good stabling. It was then called The Bear and Castle and at some point was rechristened - possibly to avoid confusion with other Marlborough pubs with similar names.

Boddingtons was best known for Boddingtons Bitter (Boddies), a straw-golden, hoppy bitter which was one of the first beers to be packaged in cans containing a widget, giving it a creamy draught-style head. In the 1990s, the beer was promoted as The Cream of Manchester in a popular advertising campaign credited with raising Manchester's profile. Boddingtons became one of the city's most famous products after Manchester United and Coronation Street.
Whitbread bought Boddingtons Brewery in 1989 and Boddingtons Bitter received an increased marketing budget and nationwide distribution. Boddingtons achieved its peak market share in 1997 and at the time was exported to over forty countries. Boddingtons beer brands are now owned by the global brewer Anheuser?Busch InBev which acquired the Whitbread Beer Company in 2000. Strangeways Brewery closed in 2004 and production of pasteurised (keg and can) Boddingtons was moved to Samlesbury in Lancashire. Production of the cask conditioned beer moved to Hydes Brewery in Moss Side, Manchester, until it was discontinued in 2012, ending the beer's association with the city.
The Boddingtons two bees logo was introduced in 1900. The bees are a symbol of Manchester, from a time when it was a hive of industry, but the two bees also represent a pun on the company name of Boddingtons Breweries.
Boddingtons largely eschewed above the line advertising until 1987, when it was first advertised on Granada television in the North West of England. The tagline from 1987 until 1991 was If you don't get Boddies, you'll just get bitter. Under Whitbread's custodianship the comedian Frankie Howerd fronted the campaign in a series of six television advertisements which mainly aired in the North West in 1990?1991. Lowe Howard-Spink was the advertising agency responsible for the Howerd advertisements.

'Life Begins at the Hop' is a single by XTC released in 1979. Their fifth single, it was the first indication of a change in their late-seventies sound from urgent post-punk to power pop. As their sound changed, so too did their line-up as keyboardist Barry Andrews was replaced by second guitarist Dave Gregory prior to its recording. The song title references the 1950s' rock 'n' roll classic 'At The Hop'
indeed, the song itself carries a strong early rock 'n' roll influence.
The song is a celebration of 'youth club culture'. 'The hop' of the title refers to popular gatherings sanctioned by local youth clubs as attempts to maintain some measure of control over the types of influences underage attendees would be exposed to in a supervised social environment.
It is also significant for being bassist Colin Moulding's first A-side composition for the group. Though the single just missed the Top Fifty, it established his prominence within the group.
'Homo Safari', the B-side, was the first in Partridge's 'Homo Safari Series', a six-part series of ambient, impressionistic instrumentals.

When I think of hops I think of warm British beer and George Orwell in his novel 'A Clergymans Daughter'.
George Orwell tried his hand at hop-picking at Blest's Farm, somewhere near West Malling, in September 1931, travelling down from London disguised as a tramp. He spent his time living in a Hopper Hut made of tin (corrugated iron), thus discovering that fruit and hop picking was not quite the idyllic life described by many scholars and writers of the time. Orwell earned 9/- in a week, and observed that a family of gypsies who had picked every year since birth earned 14/- each. His account was published in A Clergyman's Daughter in 1935.
Hops are the female flower clusters (commonly called seed cones or strobiles), of a hop species, Humulus lupulus. They are used primarily as a flavoring and stability agent in beer, to which they impart a bitter, tangy flavor, though hops are also used for various purposes in other beverages and herbal medicine.
Hops were cultivated continuously around the 8th or 9th century AD in Bohemian gardens in the Hallertau district of Bavaria and other parts of Europe. However, the first documented use of hops in beer as a bittering agent is from the eleventh century. Before this period, brewers used a wide variety of bitter herbs and flowers, including dandelion, burdock root, marigold, horehound (the German name for horehound means 'mountain hops'), ground ivy, and heather.
Hops are used extensively in brewing for their many purported benefits, including balancing the sweetness of the malt with bitterness, contributing a variety of desirable flavors and aromas, and having an antibiotic effect that favors the activity of brewer's yeast over less desirable microorganisms. Historically, it is believed that traditional herb combinations for ales were abandoned when it was noticed that ales made with hops were less prone to spoilage.

'A House' were a very witty Irish band from the 1980s to the 1990s, recognized for the clever, 'often bitter or irony laden lyrics of frontman Dave Couse. This single, 'Endless Art' is one of their best known charting successes. It was produced by Edwyn Collins.
The song lyrics begin with the line 'All art is quite useless according to Oscar Wilde' and for their remainder are mostly a list of the names and birth and death dates of artists from various fields, with the chorus remark: 'all dead but still alive, in endless time and endless art'. This 'list' style of song is characteristic of many of Dave Couse's songs. Melodically, the song features a quotation from Beethoven's Fifth Symphony at the chorus.
For the first appearance of the song on Bingo, the band received some criticism for the fact that the artists listed in the song are all male, so they recorded a second version where all the artists are female. This is the version called 'More Endless Art'. In 'More Endless Art', the melodic quoatation from Beethoven is substituted with one from Carl Orff, who, it might be quibbled, is not a woman, while the substitution of 'Walt Disney's Minnie Mouse' for his Mickey Mouse may not quite right the gender balance either. Still, 'More Endless Art' was better than a defence Dave Couse had offered in interviews, that the band had thought that Joan Mir\u00f3 was a woman.
Dave Couse has subsequently performed a live version of 'Endless Art' with a new list of artists, those deceased since the original release of the song. This is available as 'Endless Art 06' on the B-Side of his single 'A Celebration' (2006).

I am not sure what the pub was named after. A 'Rams Head' in canal terms is the wooden rudder post on a butty usually decorated with rope work and sometimes with a horse's tail. Maybe this is the source as the Bridgewater canal is only a short stones throw away.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PG60Y2 - There has been a building on our site since the 1300s although the first mention of the Kings itself is not until 1639. The Georgian frontage was added in 1753 although the size of the building was reduced in the 1890s when a decline in trade resulted in part of the front being turned into a shop. It wasn't until 1936 that the Kings left private ownership and was bought by the Friary Brewery of Guildford which later became part of Allied Breweries.
We've had a few famous guests over the years including Tsar Peter the Great (who left without paying his bill!) as well as some European royalty who met here in 1814 to discuss post war Europe after the Battle of Trafalgar. Tsar Peter the Great's visit is commemorated by a plaque on the front of the building which was unveiled in 1998 by the Russian Ambassador to commemorate the tricentenary of the visit.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K96BJB - Greenall's Brewery was founded by Thomas Greenall in 1762. Initially based in St Helens, the company established a second brewery at Wilderspool, south of Warrington in 1787.
It bought the Groves & Whitnall Brewery in Salford in 1961, Shipstone's Brewery in Nottingham in 1978[4] and Davenport's Brewery in Birmingham in 1986. For much of the 20th century, the company traded as Greenall Whitley & Co Limited. The St Helens brewery was demolished in the 1970s to make way for a new shopping centre. The Warrington brewery on the edge of Stockton Heath was bought by Bruntwood, renamed Wilderspool Business Park and is now let to office occupiers.
The company ceased brewing in 1991 to concentrate on running pubs and hotels.
In 1999, the tenanted wing of the Greenall's operation was sold to the Japanese bank, Nomura for ?370 million and the main Greenall's operation, involving 770 pubs and 69 budget lodges, was sold to Scottish and Newcastle for ?1.1billion. Greenalls started to focus its resources on its De Vere and Village Leisure hotel branding at that time.
In February 2005, Greenalls sold The Belfry to The Quinn Group for ?186 million.
The Greenall family connection remained as Lord Daresbury, the descendant of the original founder, remained the non-executive chairman. This tie was severed in 2006 when Daresbury stepped down from the post and much of the family's interest was sold
Greenall's ales are distributed by Carlsberg and brewed for them by Molson Coors in Burtonwood, near Warrington. Greenall's ales can still be bought in some pubs in the North West of England, although they are gradually disappearing (thank God!). Often, only Greenall's Mild can be found. Greenall's Bitter is 3.6% ABV. Greenall's Mild is 3.1%

Peveril of the Peak (1823) is the longest novel by Sir Walter Scott. Along with Ivanhoe, Kenilworth, and Woodstock this is one of the English novels in the Waverley novels series, with the main action taking place around 1678 in the Peak District, the Isle of Man, and London, and centring on the Popish Plot.
Plot introduction
Julian Peveril, a Cavalier, is in love with Alice Bridgenorth, a Roundhead's daughter, but both he and his father are accused of involvement with the Popish Plot of 1678.
Most of the story takes place in Derbyshire, London, and on the Isle of Man. The title refers to Peveril Castle in Castleton, Derbyshire.
