Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCA2EG - The Rochdale Pioneers Museum is housed in the building where the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society started trading on 21 December 1844. The museum is regarded as the birthplace of the modern co-operative movement. It is located in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England.
The museum includes a recreation of the original shop, containing its rudimentary furniture, scales, items that were sold at the store, etc. Moreover, the museum transmits the influence of the co-operative movement on issues such as women's rights, poverty, education, fair trade and social reform. The museum is owned by the Co-operative Heritage Trust and managed by the Co-operative College
31 Toad Lane was originally an 18th-century warehouse, on a busy road which then extended to the centre of the town. In 1844 the Co-operative Society rented the ground floor, the upper floors being used by the Methodist society. A counter was made with a plank on barrels, and the shop began. From 1849 the Co-op rented the whole building and developed a library, meeting room, and boot and shoe department. In the 1860s other buildings were rented and in 1867 the society moved out to new purpose-built premises. The building became a pet shop
The Rochdale Pioneers quickly became an inspiration for a wide part of the society, and the co-operative movement started to be known nationally and internationally. As a result, the Co-operative Union purchased the building at 31 Toad Lane in 1925, expressly to create a museum that enhanced the birthplace of co-operation. The museum opened for the first time in 1931.
In the 1970s, the museum was closed for some years because structural problems were found in the building
but it was successfully restored. Rochdale Council redeveloped the remaining section of Toad Lane outside of the building, which had been a cul-de-sac since the 1960s. The new characteristics of the area were cobbled streets, flanked by 19th-century gas lamps and a unique Victorian post-box.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNYK - This image shows a barley field in early summer, with green ears of barley beginning to form as the crop develops toward maturity. The photograph was taken in Cheshire, England, a county known for its mix of arable farming and pastoral agriculture.
Barley is a key UK cereal crop, widely grown for food production, animal feed, and brewing, and its distinctive awns create a textured, wind-swept appearance during late spring and early summer. The soft light and shallow depth of field emphasise the density and vitality of the crop, conveying themes of seasonality, growth, and rural productivity.
The image is suitable for editorial and commercial use illustrating British agriculture, farming cycles, food supply, rural landscapes, sustainability, and countryside environments, as well as conceptual uses related to nature, harvest, and seasonal change.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EFEG21 - Close-up documentary stock photograph of a hand-pump badge for Piccadilly Star, a 6.8% ABV strong cask old ale collaboration between Manchester's Cloudwater Brew Co and family brewer J.W. Lees. The round blue pump clip, mounted on a polished brass beer engine, shows the J.W. Lees cloud logo, the large Piccadilly Star name, Cloudwater and J.W. Lees branding, and the wording a delicious strong ale . A small blackboard price sign in front advertises the beer at £4.00 a pint, making the image useful for illustrating real ale value, pub pricing, beer inflation, cost of living pressures, and changing customer expectations in British pubs. The scene appears to be inside a bar or taproom, with the beer pump on a wooden plinth, bar equipment around it, and a member of staff partly visible behind the counter. The 6.8% strength, old ale style and cask presentation give the photograph extra relevance for stories about traditional draught beer, craft brewery collaborations, high-strength winter ales, CAMRA real ale culture, pub cellarmanship, regional brewing heritage and the continued market for hand-pulled beer in an era of keg craft beer and supermarket cans. J.W. Lees has brewed in Middleton, Greater Manchester since 1828, while Cloudwater is closely associated with Manchester's modern craft beer scene, so the image brings together established family brewing and contemporary independent craft brewing. The visible £4 price also adds strong editorial value because a pint of 6.8% cask ale at that price would be seen by many drinkers as unusually good value. With readable text, clear branding and a strong price cue, the image can work for editorial features on pub affordability, beer strength, northern brewing, premium cask ale and beer tourism. The photograph has strong commercial search potential for beer menus, pub economics, brewery collaborations, Manchester drinking culture, strong ale, pump clip collecting, beer festivals and British real ale photography.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NAWGJT - The Black Country is a loosely defined area of southern Staffordshire and northern Worcestershire which lies to the north and west of Birmingham, and to the south and east of Wolverhampton. The town of Dudley (Worcestershire) is sometimes referred to as being the Black Country's unofficial capital.
The Black Country is divided between the counties of Stafford and Worcester, the greater part belonging to Staffordshire. Dudley is a detached part of Worcestershire surrounded by Staffordshire, separated from the main body of its own shire by a narrow strip.
By the late 19th century, the Black Country had become one of the most intensely industrialised in the nation. The South Staffordshire coal mines, the coal coking operations, and the iron foundries and steel mills that used the local coal to fire their furnaces, produced a level of air pollution that had few equals anywhere in the world at the time.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M1MG94 - Yorkshire Tea is a black tea blend produced by the Bettys & Taylors Group since 1977. It is the most popular traditional black tea brand sold in the UK. In 1886 Charles Edward Taylor Founded CE Taylor & Co., later shortened to Taylors, the company was purchased by 'Betty's Tea Rooms' which today forms Bettys & Taylors Group. Taylors of Harrogate is still based in Harrogate, Yorkshire, in the first 'Betty's' tea room.
The group is still owned by the family of Bettys' founder, Fredrick Belmont and is currently chaired by Lesley Wild. The company is one of the few remaining family tea and coffee merchants in the country, whilst competing with the British-owned PG Tips (Ekaterra) and Tetley (Tata), where Yorkshire Tea is now the most purchased tea brand in the UK, overtaking Twinings (a division of Associated British Foods) and Typhoo
Yorkshire Tea uses varieties of tea grown in India, Sri Lanka, and Kenya, blended to form eight blends: Yorkshire Tea, Yorkshire Decaf, Yorkshire Hardwater (available in the United Kingdom), Yorkshire Gold, Breakfast Brew, Bedtime Brew, Biscuit Brew, and Toast and Jam Brew.
In 2016 the brand launched Breakfast Brew, Breaktime Brew and the decaffeinated Bedtime Brew. Yorkshire Tea introduced Biscuit Brew, a malty flavoured tea, to its range in 2018 and Toast and Jam Brew in 2020.
The Yorkshire Tea brand is being extended to include a range of cakes, biscuits, and fruit loaves, sold as being complementary to drinking tea by its parent company The Bettys & Taylors Group, which owns cookery schools and tea rooms

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAEJ43 - Wellpark Brewery is a brewery in Duke Street in the East End of Glasgow, Scotland.
It was founded in 1740 on the bank of the Molendinar Burn by Hugh and Robert Tennent. It is owned by C&C Group plc, which purchased the Tennent Caledonian Breweries subsidiary in late August 2009 from Belgian brewing company Anheuser-Busch InBev (formerly known as InBev).
The company produces Tennent's Lager, Scotland's market leading brand of pale lager since it was first produced at the Wellpark Brewery in 1885.
Wellpark Brewery was originally known as the Drygate Brewery. It was founded as H & R Tennent in 1740 at Drygate Bridge, near Glasgow Cathedral, by Hugh and Robert Tennent, although brewing had taken place at the same site on the banks of the Molendinar Burn by their ancestor, Robert Tennent, since 1556, making it the oldest continuous commercial concern in Glasgow.
Hugh Tennent's sons, John and Robert, continued the family business, trading as J & R Tennent from 1769. The business expanded in the 1790s when the Tennent family purchased the neighbouring brewery of William McLehose, and renamed the 5-acre (20,000 m2) site Wellpark Brewery.
The firm originally brewed stout and strong export ales. By the mid-19th century J&R Tennent was the world's largest bottled beer exporter. Robert Tennent died in 1826 and John Tennent in 1827. Hugh Tennent (the eldest son of Robert) then assumed control of the business. Hugh Tennent retired in 1855 with his fifth son, Charles Tennent, taking over, but he died in 1864, some months before his father. The brewery was subsequently operated by trustees on behalf of Charles Tennent's sons, Archibald and Hugh.
In 1884 Hugh Tennent took control of the company and first brewed Tennent's lager in 1885. He later built a new lager brewery on the Wellpark site, which was begun in 1889 and completed in 1891. J&R Tennent produced the first draught lager in 1924, the first canned lager in 1935 and the first keg lager in 1963.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHBJYB - What is cask-conditioned beer?
For the first thirty years of CAMRA's story, most of the better flavoured beer in the UK were the type of ˜real ale' that is served from a type of barrel called a cask . While stored in a pub's cellar, the beer inside these casks develops its character, or condition , for up to a week, thanks to the presence of live yeast in the beer. It is then served without the injection of carbon dioxide gas.
This additional maturation should add elegance to the beer's character, while the absence of gas injection makes its carbonation gentler.
Major efforts by CAMRA, including publicising the best outlets for such cask-conditioned beers and running hundreds of beer festivals each year that served them, promoted them ahead of the industrial brands that had come to dominate the UK beer trade in the late 20th century.
The term real ale became associated with beer served from a pub's cellar via tall, hand-pulled pumps mounted on the bar, with the make of beer named on a clip attached around the narrowest part of the handle. A few would be served directly from the cask, through a simple tap.
Like any artisan product, a cask-conditioned beer requires special handling and storage to be consumed at its best. The cellar temperature needs to be fairly consistent and neither too hot or too cold
the cask should lie undisturbed and its keeping time respected
and the pipes through which it flows to the bar must be kept thoroughly clean. A cask-conditioned beer served in a British pub remains an essential part of British culture

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P4HWKX - ROBINSONS RELEASE NEW SEASONAL BEER ˜FROM THE LIGHT SIDE': HOPPY WAN KENOBI
THIS IS THE BEER YOU'RE LOOKING FOR!
180 year old family-run-brewers, Robinsons, have unveiled a new seasonal beer designed to get drinkers to come out in force: Hoppy Wan Kenobi
a golden ale inspired by the world-famous movie: Star Wars.
Available for just two months throughout June and July, this noble brew is crisp, tart and packing a punch. The pump clip has been carefully designed to capture the legendary Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, proudly presenting his iconic blue plasma blade lightsaber. ˜Search your feelings' and you'll find the hop is strong with this one. Loaded with cascade and sovereign hops, and interlaced with light citrus aromas, this 4% ABV limited-edition golden ale is dangerously drinkable.
Hoppy Wan Kenobi is part of Robinsons' series of seasonal movie-themed ales that have been specially brewed for 2018.
Gill Yates, Brands Manager for Robinsons Brewery, explains: For our latest seasonal beer, Hoppy Wan Kenobi, we decided to continue to play on our popular TV and film series theme, as from our customer's response we're aware of how well it works. In 2017, we sold 770,688 pints of our seasonal beers altogether. This was a great result and we're pleased to be able to provide drinkers with fun, relatable ales which look fantastic alongside our other beers on the bar. We hope that everybody gets a chance to taste this golden delight.
Hoppy Wan Kenobi is available throughout June and July regionally via select Robinsons' pubs and free trade across the North West, Cumbria and North Wales, and nationally via listings with Heineken, Enterprise Inns Carlsberg, Punch, Admiral Taverns, Stonegate,

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy JND0CM - Boddingtons Brewery was a regional brewery in Manchester, England, which owned pubs throughout the North West. Boddingtons was best known for Boddingtons Bitter (Boddies), a straw-golden, hoppy bitter which was one of the first beers to be packaged in cans containing a widget, giving it a creamy draught-style head.
In the 1990s, the beer was promoted as The Cream of Manchester in a popular advertising campaign credited with raising Manchester's profile. Boddingtons became one of the city's most famous products after Manchester United and Coronation Street.
Whitbread bought Boddingtons Brewery in 1989 and Boddingtons Bitter received an increased marketing budget and nationwide distribution. Boddingtons achieved its peak market share in 1997 and at the time was exported to over forty countries.
Boddingtons beer brands are now owned by the global brewer Anheuser“Busch InBev, which acquired the Whitbread Beer Company in 2000. Strangeways Brewery closed in 2004 and production of pasteurised (keg and can) Boddingtons was moved to Samlesbury in Lancashire. Production of the cask-conditioned beer moved to Hydes Brewery in Moss Side, Manchester, until it was discontinued in 2012, ending the beer's association with the city.

The specific selected yeast gives this Weissbier the unmistakable taste of diverse fruity beer flavors. A special brewing process with traditional bottle fermentation results in a particular bubbly, naturally cloudy Hefeweissbier.
Select ingredients, a special brewing process, perfected quality control and bottle fermentation guarantee the bubbly, fresh taste of this royal Bavarian Weissbier . HRH Luitpold, Prince of Bavaria pays personal attention to the high quality of this beer and the exclusive resources from southern Germany.
König Ludwig Weissbier was honored with the World Beer Award for the world's best wheat beer in 2008. The jury of the international journal Beers of the World praised König Ludwig Weissbier as the prototype of a Bavarian wheat beer .

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7N816 - Close detail of the word München carved into a dark wooden beer barrel or decorative cask, photographed as a textured symbol of Munich, Oktoberfest and Bavarian beer tradition. The umlaut over the U, the deep carved lettering, oak leaf decoration and curved barrel form make the image useful for stock photography on German brewing, Munich tourism, Oktoberfest history, cooperage, beer halls, beer tents, Bavarian culture, festival branding, hospitality and regional identity. The warm brown timber, worn grain, hand carved look and shadowed surface give the scene a heritage feeling, linking modern festival tourism with older craft traditions around wooden barrels, brewery storage, cask beer and ceremonial tapping. Oktoberfest takes place on the Theresienwiese in Munich, while the official Oktoberfest site highlights the long-standing custom of the first beer barrel being tapped at the Schottenhamel tent to open the festival. Wooden beer barrels also remain part of Oktoberfest imagery, with Augustiner Festhalle noted by the official site for serving beer from traditional wooden barrels known as Hirsche. This image can illustrate travel guides, editorial articles, brewery features, food and drink publishing, beer culture, Bavarian heritage, Munich city branding, German language, carved signage, pub and bar features, hospitality marketing and historical explainers about the craft of coopering. The close-up format avoids crowds and recognisable people, making it flexible for commercial and editorial use where a neutral but instantly recognisable Oktoberfest or Munich visual is needed. The lighting appears direct and bright, revealing the wood texture and carved details without showing weather or season beyond the wider Oktoberfest and beer festival association. It suits themes such as Bavarian tradition, German beer tourism, wooden casks, brewery decoration, Oktoberfest symbols and Munich as a global destination for beer, food, culture and seasonal celebrations.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY5KDM - Pork rind is the skin (rind) of a pig. Pork rind is a common ingredient of sausages, which helps to improve their consistency. Fried or roasted pork rind and fat is also a snack. The frying renders much of the fat that is attached to the uncooked rind, causing the cooked product to reduce considerably in size. The product may be known by alternative names, such as pork scratchings or pork crackling in the UK, although the term crackling may also refer to the rind atop a roasted pork joint

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H366N4 - This documentary stock photograph shows Pulling a handpull pint in a Yorkshire pub, with empty glasses, England, UK. The subject is rooted in Shipley, Yorkshire and is useful for editorial stories about Yorkshire pub culture, real ale, hand-pulled beer, traditional games and the social life of local pubs. The visible detail and caption make it more valuable than a generic bar or drink image, because it shows a real venue, real pub behaviour or a specific building connected with local social life. British pubs remain important as places to meet, eat, drink, watch sport, play traditional games and maintain informal community networks, while at the same time facing pressure from energy costs, staffing, changing drinking habits, business rates, rent, supermarket alcohol and the shift towards food-led trade. This image can support articles about real ale, hand pumps, cellar-to-bar service, drinkers, pub games such as dominoes, historic pub interiors, public house survival, tourism, hospitality employment, licensing, town-centre economies and the role of pubs in working-class and city life. It can also work for features on CAMRA, beer heritage, cask ale quality, independent pubs, after-work drinkers, railway-station pubs, local economies and nostalgia for sociable, unpretentious public houses. Search-friendly composite terms include traditional British pub culture, real ale handpull pint, Yorkshire pub games, London historic pub, pub hospitality industry, community local, cask beer service, licensed premises and UK evening economy. The documentary approach gives editors a credible image for news, magazine, web, tourism, food and drink, business, leisure, heritage and social commentary use. Where people or hands are visible, the photograph can also suggest the tactile, social side of pubs, including ordering, serving, chatting, playing and lingering rather than simply consuming a product.

The Duke of York
Nestled along a narrow cobbled alleyway in the historic Half Bap area, the Duke offers a traditional Belfast welcome of craic, music and humour in contrast to the modern fashionable establishments currently blowing into the surrounding streets. Hosting regular traditional sessions there is no better place to sample the real taste of our city “ simply step in and drink an Irish whiskey washed down with a pint of creamy stout.
Imagine Belfast with only five streets. Protected by earth ramparts and the city walls, the area where the Dark Horse now stands was convenient to the old iron foundry, the pottery, the whiskey merchants and the brown linen hall. Appreciate the superb décor and special atmosphere with beautiful antique mirrors, Belfast furniture and artefacts from some of the city's most famous hotels and buildings from bygone times “ providing a rather rare and unique glimpse of Belfast's historical past. Just call in and you will enjoy a huge warm welcome from a truly Belfast institution with a huge heart.

'The Bottle' is a song by American soul artist Gil Scott-Heron and musician Brian Jackson, released in 1974 on Strata-East Records in the United States.
The song was issued as the first and only single for Scott-Heron's and Jackson's album Winter in America (1974). It became an underground and cult hit upon its release, and the single peaked at number 15 on the R&
B Singles Chart. Cited by music critics as the album's best recording, the commercial success of 'The Bottle' helped lead to Jackson's and Scott-Heron's next recording contract with Arista Records. Similar to other compositions by Scott-Heron, the song has been sampled extensively by hip hop artists.

The Liverpool Cains brewery was founded by Irish immigrant Robert Cain in 1858 when he was able to buy an established brewery. Cain had begun his brewing career aged 24 when he purchased a pub and brewed his own ales.
Within 25 years of founding his brewery, Cain had established 200 pubs, including The Philharmonic Dining Rooms, The Vines and the Central Commercial Hotel, which are currently listed as being of architectural merit. His personal mansion had each window arch inscribed with his monogram. In 1887 construction began on a second brewery.
In 1921, 14 years after Cain's death, the Cains brewery merged with Walkers of Warrington becoming Walker Cains. Then in 1923 the original Stanhope Street Brewery was sold to Higsons, who continued to brew Cains ales.
In 1985, Higsons was bought by Boddingtons of Manchester. Five years later Boddingtons opted to concentrate on pub ownership and sold all its breweries to Whitbread, at which point the Stanhope Street site was closed.
Since that time, the site has been re-opened by Danes, rescued by the Asian Dusanj brothers and neared administration again. Today it still brews a nice range of real ales and lager. The Brewery Tap (or The Grapes Inn as was), pictured here is an interesting place for a few pints of Cains or Cains. It is about a 15min walk from Liverpool Lime street.
Cains was the official beer of Liverpool's 2008 European Capital of Culture celebrations. For a full story of the Cains history checkout 'Chris Routledge's fine tome 'The Story of Liverpool in a Pint'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GY1D8N - Photo shows Holding barley in the hand, from a field in summer, Cheshire,England, UK. The image is useful for illustrating British and Irish pub culture, real ale, traditional bars, hospitality, visitor economy stories and the continued importance of pubs as social places. Where a named pub, brewery, beer pump, pint glass or drinking street is visible, it can support articles on licensed premises, cask ale, CAMRA interest, tourism, nightlife, local character and changing high streets. The supplied location evidence places the subject at or near Cheshire, England, UK, which adds value for buyers searching by town, city, region or postcode. Weather and season may be visible outside or through the setting
the subject has clear hospitality and leisure value. It should work for editorial buyers needing authentic, non-staged British or travel imagery for news, magazine, blog, local government, heritage, housing, transport, tourism, retail, public policy or social commentary use. The caption should be checked against the visible photograph before upload so that any readable signs, weather, time of day and people context are accurately reflected without overstating facts not shown in the image. The strongest sales value is the combination of named subject, real location and everyday documentary style, giving picture editors a flexible image that can sit alongside features, opinion pieces, explainers, historical retrospectives and local news. Search relevance is helped by including concise place names, visible brand or wording, functional subject terms, and wider editorial concepts such as public realm, consumer behaviour, heritage, travel, leisure and community life where they genuinely match the picture.
