Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R0DWW2 - As Masham celebrated the King's Coronation, people in the small market town have spoken of hopes a buyer can be found for the Black Sheep Brewery.
Last week, Black Sheep announced administrators had been appointed after being hit very hard by the pandemic and a rise in costs.
The company, which employs around 50 members of staff, was founded in 1992 and has become a tourist hotspot bringing a significant amount of footfall to the town.
One local business owner told the Stray Ferret people are worried about a potential loss of income for their own businesses if the brewery doesn't survive.
Tim Ledbetter, owner of Bentley's of Masham, said:
With it being such a big employer, there is then a big knock-on effect.
We get a lot of trade from visitors of Black Sheep it could be detrimental.
The brewery reported turnover of £14.3 million as of March 31, 2022, according to its most recent accounts. However, it also stated a pre-tax loss of £1.18 million, compared to £862,871 profit in the previous year

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJ29R8 - Bacharach (pronunciation (help·info), also known as Bacharach am Rhein) is a town in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde of Rhein-Nahe, whose seat is in Bingen am Rhein, although that town is not within its bounds.
The original name Baccaracus suggests a Celtic origin. Above the town stands Stahleck Castle (Burg Stahleck), now a youth hostel.
Geography
Location
The town lies in the Rhine Gorge, 48 km south of Koblenz.
Constituent communities
Bacharach is divided into several Ortsteile. The outlying centre of Steeg lies in the Steeg Valley (Steeger Tal) off to the side, away from the Rhine. This glen lies between Medenscheid and Neurath to the south and Henschhausen to the north on the heights.
History
In the early 11th century, Bacharach had its first documentary mention. It may have been that as early as the 7th century, the kingly domain passed into Archbishop of Cologne Kunibert's ownership
pointing to this is a Kunibertskapelle (chapel) on the spot where now stands the Wernerkapelle. The Vögte of the Cologne estate were the Elector of the Palatinate, who over time pushed back Cologne's influence.
Caring for and maintaining Bacharach's building monuments, spurred on in the early 20th century by the Rhenish Association for Monument Care and Landscape Preservation (Rheinischer Verein für Denkmalpflege und Landschaftsschutz) which took on the then highly endangered town wall and Stahleck Castle ruin jobs, and the great dedication of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate to the Wernerkapelle have seen to it that Bacharach is still a jewel of the Rheinromantik and a multifaceted documentary site of mediaeval architecture on the Middle Rhine. The Wernerkapelle ruin is under monumental protection and before it a plaque has been placed recalling the inhuman crimes against Jewish residents and also containing a quotation from a prayer by Pope John XXIII for a change in Christians' thinking in their relationship

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K5J0DY - An elegant town-centre pub, built in 1886 on the site of its predecessor, the Noah's Ark
the notable faience frontage dates from a remodelling of 1900 by local architect Fred T. Beck. On the wall of the smoke room are the plans showing the changes made in 1983 (Architects: David Horne Associates) when Allied Breweries converted the pub into one of the earliest of their Holt, Plant & Deakin' pubs these did include making an archway through the rear wall to give access to the smoke room and creating a third room at the rear.
It has an excellent ceramic exterior including the wording 'The Posada' on three tiled panels one on the fascia and two in vertical lettering on pilasters in each of the external recessed porches which have mosaic floors. Below the small-paned bowed window is a dado of golden yellow glazed brick and tiles. Both porches have a glazed brick and tiled dado in golden yellow with cream glazed brick above up to ceiling height with a dark yellow tiled frieze at the top and mosaic floors. Of the five main lower front windows the central three are now plain, which is not likely to have been the case when the pub was built. The leaded window in the right hand door is a modern replacement.
The public bar is a very special room with its tiled walls in orange-brown on the dado and cream above, original bar fittings including rare snob screens and is little altered since 1900. The left hand door leads into a vestibule that looks modern as does the panelling so it has been added later, possibly in 1983. The bar counter looks like the original 1900 one with panelled frontage the only changes being a 1960s/70s slanting piece of timber piece on the left for the present hatch
also, there is a cut right at the front right-hand end where the quadrant becomes straight, facing to the window which is where the hatch was originally.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1Y84T - A Royal Warrant of Appointment is granted as a mark of recognition to people or companies who have regularly supplied goods or services to HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh or HRH The Prince of Wales or their Households
The Monarch decides who may grant Royal Warrants. These are known as the Grantors. Today HM The Queen and HRH The Prince of Wales grant Royal Warrants. Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh were also grantors of Warrants.
There are currently over 800 Royal Warrant holders. They represent a huge cross-section of trade and industry, from individual craftspeople to global multi-nationals, ranging from dry cleaners to fishmongers, and from agricultural machinery to computer software. There is no requirement for the company concerned to be British owned or UK-based. Warrant-holding firms do not provide their goods or services for free to the Royal Households, and all transactions are conducted on a strictly commercial basis.
A Royal Warrant is initially granted for up to five years to a named individual at a company, known as the Grantee. An official Royal Warrant Display Document is sent to the Grantee which provides evidence of the authority to use the Royal Arms.
The grant of a Royal Warrant gives a Warrant Holder nothing more than a right to display the Royal Arms and they are not entitled to claim or imply any exclusivity of supply. When a company displays the Royal Arms in relation to their business, the Coat of Arms must always be accompanied by the Legend. This Legend provides the details of which Member of the Royal Family has granted the Royal Warrant, the company name, the nature of the goods or services provided to them and the head office address of the company.
The Lord Chamberlain's Rules govern how the Royal Warrant may be displayed on a company's products, stationery, advertisements and other printed material, in their premises and on delivery vehicles.

As with most fish oils, it contains the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and also vitamin A and vitamin D. Historically, it was given to children because vitamin D had been shown to prevent rickets, a consequence of vitamin D deficiency.
Cod liver oil has traditionally come in many grades. Cod liver oil for human consumption is pale and straw colored, with a mild flavor. Scandinavian Vikings produced cod liver oil by laying birch tree branches over a kettle of water, and fresh livers were laid over the branches. The water was brought to a boil and as the steam rose, the oil from the liver dripped into the water and was skimmed off. There was also a method for producing fresh raw cod liver oil.
In the Industrial Revolution, cod liver oil became popular for industrial purposes. Livers placed in barrels to rot, with the oil skimmed off over the season, was the main method for producing this oil. The resulting oil was brown and foul tasting. In the 1800s cod liver oil became popular as a medicine and both pale and brown oils were used. Brown oils were common because they were cheaper to produce. Some doctors believed in only using the fresh pale oil, while others believed the brown oil was better. The rancid brown oils tended to cause intestinal upset.
The Möller Process was invented by Peter Möller in 1850. The livers are ground with water into a slurry, then this is gently simmered until the oil rises to the top. The oil is skimmed off and purified. Other methods used in modern times include the Cold Flotation Process, pressure extraction, and pressure cooking. These all require further purification steps to get a pure oil.
Though similar in fatty acid composition to other fish oils, cod liver oil has higher concentrations of vitamins A and D

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPDJB2 - Bulmers cider is one of a number of brands owned by British cider maker H. P. Bulmer of Hereford. It is one of the biggest selling British bottled cider brands in the UK because it has the highest concentration of apples, with a number of variants including Bulmers Original & Pear. It should not be confused with Bulmers Irish Cider, sold outside the Republic of Ireland as Magners.
History
Fred and Percy Bulmer grew the apples at their family orchard at Credenhill in Herefordshire which would be later used to make the cider for which they became known. Production was initially at Ryelands Street in Hereford, the original buildings, including cider cellars survives today as the Cider Museum and King Offa Distillery. Production moved to the current Plough Lane site in the late 1970s. Today HP Bulmer makes 65% of the UK's five hundred million litres of cider sold annually, and the bulk of the UK's cider exports. From 1937 to 1949, Bulmers operated with Wm. Magners of Clonmel, expanding into Irish distribution markets. From 1949 Magners withdrew from this partnership but retained rights to trade under the name HP Bulmer Ltd in Ireland.
In 2003, the Hereford-based firm was bought for £278 million by Scottish & Newcastle (S&N) with the loss of some 200 jobs initially. In 2008, S&N were bought for £7.8 billion by the Carlsberg and Heineken groups. Bulmers now only survives as a brand name and subsidiary of the Dutch Heineken group, with operations in Hereford scaled back to focus mainly on the production of cider.
During spring 2006, the company relaunched Bulmers Original in the UK, aimed at the served over ice market, which had grown in popularity over the past few years. Bulmers Original is a 4.5% ABV cider, primarily sold in pint bottles (568 ml). In November 2007, Bulmers pear cider was launched

Real Cyder has been made in the traditional way from our East Devon orchards at Clyst St Lawrence for at least the past 100 years that we know of. Looking at old maps of the local area it's probably much longer than that and the documented history of Devon Cyder extends to more like 300 - 400 years.
Whiteways Orchard Heritage
The famous Whiteways Devon Cyder Company were based 2 miles from us and for nearly a century, the orchards surrounding us were nurtured and used to make their Devon Cyder. Famously Whiteways exported thousands of gallons of Cyder to America during the post-prohibition era. In it's heyday the orchards at Whimple were known to be the most extensive in the world. Whiteway's closed in 1985 due to the decline in popularity and the factory land was sold of for housing. The orchards, including our own became redundant for many years but have now, thankfully found a new lease of life due to the renewed interest in Real Cyder.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M108AF - The Viaduct Tavern is a Grade II listed public house at 126 Newgate Street, Holborn, London. It was built in 1865 and the interior was remodeled in 18981900 by Arthur Dixon. It is on the Campaign for Real Ale's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors.
The tavern is also known for reportedly being haunted, and has been the subject of several investigation shows, including BuzzFeed Unsolved
The pub has a large curved frontage, but the interior is surprisingly small. Many of the original features have survived. On one wall, three paintings of wistful maidens represent agriculture, banking and the arts. The arts' was attacked (some say shot, others bayoneted) by a drunken First World War soldier, and she still bears the scar.
There are gilded and silvered mirrors and decorated glass. At the back of the bar is a manager's stall, a sort of office booth, made from beautifully carved hardwood and intricately engraved glass panels. The ornate ceiling is made from beaten copper and is supported by cast iron pillars.
The Viaduct Tavern and the Old Bailey opposite, were NOT built on the site of Newgate Prison, which continued until 1868. The cellars of the Viaduct are therefore NOT the former cells of the prison and despite the tours of them that can be arranged by appointment (they're authentically skanky) they're not cells. Still evocative and stinkily Victorian, though.

It was founded in 1882 by Samuel Arthur Brain.[1] At its peak, the company controlled more than 250 pubs in South Wales (particularly in Cardiff), Mid Wales and the West Country but the brewer sold most of its pub estate in 2022.[2] The company took over Crown Buckley Brewery in Llanelli in 1997 and Hancock's Brewery in 1999. In 2000, Brains moved to the former Hancock's Brewery just south of Cardiff Central railway station. The Old Brewery, in Cardiff city centre, has been developed into a modern bar and restaurant complex.
The company produces a range of beers under the Brains, Buckley's and Hancock's names. As part of their marketing strategy, Brains use shirt sponsorship for the Wales national rugby union team and the Crusaders Rugby League team

He married Jessie Roberta Rita Cowan, the daughter of a Glasgow doctor, and returned with her to Japan in 1920. In 1923 he joined Kotobukiya (currently Suntory) and helped to establish a distillery before starting Nikka in 1934.
After their deaths, the company was run by their adoptive son, Takeshi Taketsuru, who expanded its business substantially.
Products
Nikka produces a wide variety of Japanese whiskies, ranging from ¥900 (per 700 ml bottle) Black Nikka sold in Japanese convenience stores, to the ¥15,750 (per 750 ml bottle) Nikka Single Cask. In 2008, Yoichi 20 Year Old was voted best single malt at the World Whiskies Awards.
Black Nikka is a 37% alcoholic whisky, available at corner stores throughout Japan in 180, 300, 700, 1800, 1920, 2700, and 4000 mL bottles. Individual servings, pre-mixed with soda or water, are also available.
Nikka has been owned by Asahi Group Holdings since 1954

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ABJGCB - Drygate Brewing Co, 85 Drygate, Glasgow G4 0UT
Established in 2014 in a converted box factory, adjacent to Tennent's brewery. The building dates from 1964. Drygate Brewing Co have been making beer in the historic heart of Glasgow since 2014. We brew with open doors and open minds
we believe good beer can come from anywhere, and anyone.
Collaboration with our community is at our core
we love showcasing creators of beer, food, art, design, music, comedy, poetry, and more.
Operating across our state of the art bespoke 26.5HL main brewhouse + 250L Studio kit, our brewing team share a passion for great beer. Housed in a converted box factory under the seven peaks of the roof, our building reflects on Glasgow's industrial past while the experiential brewery inside invites visitors on a journey of brewing and discovery.
85 Drygate was built in 1964, originally as a box assembly and screenprinting factory, using brick, steel and concrete. The design concentrates on existing eccentricities of the building, bearing traces of all its previous incarnations: box factory, print works, bottling plant and storage unit.
The original structure and details of the building have been preserved including the restoration of the original seven peaks of the sawtooth roof, exposed brick walls displayed behind newly installed panes of glass and the preservation of paint marks on the concrete floor, celebrating traces of the building's functional heritage.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P4HWP0 - Niagara-on-the-Lake is a town in Ontario, Canada. It is located on the Niagara Peninsula at the point where the Niagara River meets Lake Ontario, across the river from New York, United States. Niagara-on-the-Lake is in the Niagara Region of Ontario and is the only town in Canada that has a lord mayor. It has a population of 17,511 (2016).
Niagara-on-the-Lake is important in the history of Canada: it served as the first capital of the province of Upper Canada, the predecessor of Ontario, and was called Newark from 1792 to 1797. During the War of 1812, the town, the two former villages of St. David's and Queenston, and Fort George were the sites of numerous battles following the American invasion of Upper Canada, and the town was razed. Niagara-on-the-Lake is home to the oldest Catholic church and the second-oldest Anglican church in Ontario and the oldest surviving golf course in North America.
Today, Niagara-on-the-Lake draws tourists with its colonial-style buildings, the Shaw Festival, Fort George, wineries, an outlet mall on the highway, and its proximity to Niagara Falls. The Niagara Region has the second-highest percentage of seniors in Ontario

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P4HWP5 - Barney the owner started by making Eau De Vie when he came out of his career as a nature photographer, he delicately picks the fruit for each flavour, washing, peeling and preparing each by hand.
After a number of seasons making the different Eau De Vies he then ventured into gin. Barney would soak hundreds of botanicals in a neutral spirit to discover which gave the best flavours, then with each botanical would go through the different species to see which would go the best with the other botanicals.
The final product is created like this: Hard spices, berries and herbs are soaked in our neutral British wheat spirit for 40 hours. We then suspend fresh blood orange zest and a rich mix of flowers and fragrant leaves above the liquid, their aroma gently extracted by the rising steam. 34 ingredients in all come together in a slow 7-hour, carefully guided distillation. It creates a sum much greater than its parts.
The dry flavour is matched with a lovely spearmint flavour which stays with you long after you drink it.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DBHRB5 - Jiggering and jolleying: These operations are carried out on the potter's wheel and allow the time taken to bring wares to a standardized form to be reduced. Jiggering is the operation of bringing a shaped tool into contact with the plastic clay of a piece under construction, the piece itself being set on a rotating plaster mould on the wheel.
The jigger tool shapes one face while the mould shapes the other. Jiggering is used only in the production of flat wares, such as plates, but a similar operation, jolleying, is used in the production of hollow-wares such as cups.
Jiggering and jolleying have been used in the production of pottery since at least the 18th century. In large-scale factory production, jiggering and jolleying are usually automated, which allows the operations to be carried out by semi-skilled labour.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DBHRCT - A George Jennings Closet of the Century water closet on display at Gladstone Pottery Museum in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, showing the overlap between Victorian sanitary engineering, ceramic manufacturing and everyday social history. The white glazed ceramic toilet bowl carries red lettering reading The Closet of the Century and George Jennings Patent, Stangate, London, with pipework and a flush handle visible beside the museum exhibit. Jennings was an important nineteenth century sanitary ware supplier and innovator, associated with public lavatories, improved water closet design and the wider Victorian movement towards cleaner towns, better drainage and public health reform. The Science Museum notes that models of Jennings' patent water closets were made from earthenware, metal and mahogany and may have been used as sales models during the International Health Exhibitions of the 1890s. This photograph has strong editorial and commercial value for stories about toilet history, public health, sanitation, Victorian invention, bathroom design, plumbing heritage, museum collections, ceramics, industrial archaeology and Stoke-on-Trent's Potteries heritage. Gladstone Pottery Museum, based in the historic pottery district of Longton, preserves bottle ovens, workshops and displays linked to the city's ceramic industry, making it a fitting location for an object that connects ceramic production with the history of domestic and public hygiene. The image can illustrate articles on spending a penny, public conveniences, 19th century urban reform, antique sanitary ware, porcelain toilets, historic bathroom fittings, design history and the humour as well as seriousness of lavatory culture. The close-up composition, visible maker's mark, museum context and unusual subject make it especially useful for heritage features, educational publishing, quirky travel articles, social history blogs and museum guide material.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DBHRN5 - Interior view of the historic colour room at Gladstone Pottery Museum in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, showing shelves filled with old labelled jars and containers used for ceramic colours, stains, pigments and glaze materials. The black, grey, cream and brown storage pots, worn paper labels and utilitarian wooden shelving give the image a strong documentary feel, recording the practical back-room materials behind Staffordshire pottery decoration. Visible labels appear to include colour names and coded recipes, suggesting the careful organisation needed by decorators, paintresses, gilders and colour room workers in a busy potbank. Gladstone Pottery Museum is a preserved Victorian pottery factory on Uttoxeter Road, Longton, and its displays interpret the industrial processes that made Stoke-on-Trent internationally known as The Potteries. The site is associated with bottle ovens, kilns, workshops, decorating rooms and the everyday labour of ceramic production, from clay preparation and firing to glazing, colour, enamel and gilding. This image is useful for editorial and commercial themes around British ceramics, Staffordshire industry, museum collections, craft skills, heritage conservation, industrial archaeology, social history, factory interiors, material culture, pottery design, ceramic chemistry and traditional trades. The colour room shows that the success of tableware and decorative pottery depended not only on kilns and clay, but on specialist knowledge of colours, oxides, recipes and finishes. The muted indoor light, dusty shelves and ageing jars create an atmospheric visual for articles about Longton heritage, Stoke tourism, manufacturing history, education, preservation and the fragile survival of workshop objects. It can also support features on hand decoration, pottery painting, women's work in ceramics, archives of industrial knowledge and the wider story of how North Staffordshire became a global centre for ceramic manufacture.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DBHRPN - Close-up detail of an aged paper label on a dark glazed ceramic colour jar in the historic colour room at Gladstone Pottery Museum, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. The worn label appears to read Water Green 1025, with the word PASTE partly visible below, suggesting a stored ceramic colour, stain, glaze ingredient or decorating material used in pottery production. The cracked paper, faded stencilled lettering, dark reflective jar surface and subdued indoor light give the image a strong documentary quality, concentrating attention on the everyday workshop records and materials behind Staffordshire ceramics. Gladstone Pottery Museum is a preserved Victorian pottery factory on Uttoxeter Road in Longton, part of the historic Potteries district of Stoke-on-Trent. Its displays interpret the labour, craft and industrial processes behind pottery manufacture, including clay preparation, throwing, moulding, firing, decorating, colour and gilding. This image is commercially useful for editorial features on British ceramics, ceramic pigments, pottery colour chemistry, glaze recipes, industrial heritage, museum collections, craft skills, material culture, factory interiors, conservation, local history and traditional trades. The jar label is a small but telling object, showing how colours and recipes were identified, stored and controlled within a working potbank. It can support stories about ceramic design, hand decoration, pottery painting, paintresses, colour room workers, Clarice Cliff context, Stoke tourism, Longton heritage and the preservation of specialist industrial knowledge. The close crop removes wider context and makes the image suitable as an atmospheric background or detail shot for articles about pigments, historic workshops, archive materials, industrial archaeology and the way North Staffordshire became internationally known for pottery and ceramic manufacture.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DBHRRJ - Close-up detail of a worn paper label reading Pink 1375 on a ceramic colour jar in the historic colour room at Gladstone Pottery Museum, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. The cracked, aged label, black stencilled lettering and dark glazed storage vessel give the photograph a strong documentary feel, showing the practical materials behind pottery decoration rather than the finished ware. The image is useful for editorial and commercial themes around Staffordshire ceramics, The Potteries, colour mixing, ceramic stains, pigments, oxides, glaze ingredients, craft skills, industrial heritage, museum collections, factory interiors and the working culture of a traditional potbank. Gladstone Pottery Museum is a preserved Victorian pottery factory on Uttoxeter Road in Longton, part of Stoke-on-Trent's internationally known ceramics landscape. The museum's displays interpret the processes and supporting rooms that helped make pottery production possible, including throwing, moulding, decorating, firing, colour and gilding. This image concentrates on a small but important object: a labelled colour container, probably once used to identify or store a particular pink ceramic decorating colour or pigment. The torn paper, creases, stains and utilitarian typography suggest repeated workshop use, careful storage and the everyday knowledge of decorators, painters and colour room workers. It can support articles on British manufacturing history, pottery design, ceramic chemistry, women's work in ceramics, Clarice Cliff context, museum conservation, material culture, education, heritage tourism and North Staffordshire industrial archaeology. The close crop, muted indoor light and absence of people make it flexible as an atmospheric background image for stories about colour recipes, factory records, historic craft processes, traditional trades, local identity and the preservation of workshop objects that explain how the Potteries became a global centre for ceramics.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DBHRT7 - Interior detail of the historic colour room at Gladstone Pottery Museum in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, showing rows of labelled ceramic colour jars stored on wooden shelving. The black, grey, cream and brown containers, worn paper labels and dusty setting evoke the working world of a Staffordshire potbank, where colours, stains, oxides and decorating materials were part of making and finishing pottery. Visible labels appear to include colour names such as celeste, cobalt blue and pink, linking the image with ceramic decoration, glaze preparation and the specialist materials used by decorators and painters. Gladstone Pottery Museum is a preserved Victorian pottery factory on Uttoxeter Road, Longton, and its displays explain the jobs and rooms that supported production, from clay preparation and throwing to firing, decorating, colour and gilding. This image is useful for editorial and commercial themes around Stoke-on-Trent ceramics, The Potteries, industrial heritage, museum collections, craft skills, British manufacturing, pigment storage, colour chemistry, pottery design, ceramic art, factory interiors, heritage conservation and educational interpretation. The shelves suggest the careful organisation and practical knowledge behind mass-produced tableware, sanitary ware and decorative ceramics, where colour recipes and materials could be vital to a factory's identity and output. The subdued indoor light, utilitarian shelving and aged containers give the photograph a strong documentary feel, suitable for features about Victorian industry, social history, craft labour, museum learning, traditional trades and the cultural legacy of North Staffordshire. It can also support stories about Clarice Cliff, ceramic decoration, colour in design, pottery painting, artisan skills, industrial archaeology, tourism in Stoke-on-Trent and the preservation of workshop objects that help explain how the Potteries became internationally known for ceramics.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DBHTGN - Portrait view of the historic bottle kilns at Gladstone Pottery Museum in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, a preserved Victorian pottery works in the heart of the Potteries. The photograph shows the distinctive cone-shaped brick bottle ovens rising above a cobbled yard, with warm red brick walls, green painted doors, wooden railings, chimney stacks, saggar containers and pottery yard details creating a strong sense of industrial heritage. The sky is dark and overcast, with dramatic cloud and subdued light giving the scene a moody atmosphere suited to heritage, tourism and history features. Gladstone Pottery Museum is housed in a former coal-fired pottery factory and is known for its surviving bottle ovens, which are among the most powerful visual symbols of Stoke-on-Trent's ceramics industry. The museum explains the skills and working conditions behind pottery production, including clay preparation, throwing, moulding, decorating, firing and the use of saggars to protect ware inside kilns. This image is highly relevant for editorial and commercial use on Stoke-on-Trent, Longton, Staffordshire tourism, ceramic manufacturing, industrial archaeology, Victorian factories, working museums, craft skills, heritage conservation, regeneration, local identity and the story of the Six Towns. Bottle kilns once dominated the skyline of North Staffordshire, but surviving examples are now important listed heritage structures. Gladstone is listed by Stoke museums at Uttoxeter Road, Longton, and specialist bottle oven records identify the site as having four updraught bottle ovens and a muffle kiln within the Longton Conservation Area. The vertical composition, strong architectural forms and textured brickwork make the image useful for travel guides, educational publishing, museum promotion, British industrial history, ceramics features, pottery design, kiln technology, craft tourism and stories about preserving the built legacy of the Staffordshire Potteries.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HD49 - Minimum alcohol pricing in Scotland.
Five European wine-producing nations are trying to block Scotland's plans for minimum alcohol pricing.
France, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Bulgaria have said the policy is illegal, unfair and ineffective and could have a devastating impact on the wine and spirits industry.
They argue that it breaches European free trade law by discriminating against imported alcohol products.
The Scottish government insisted minimum pricing was perfectly legal.
The European Commission (EC) is currently considering the Scottish government's request to be granted an exemption from trade regulations to enact the minimum price law which was approved by the Scottish Parliament last year.

Salad were a cool, annoying likeable UK pop group formed in London in 1992, that included Dutch vocalist/keyboardist and MTV presenter Marijne van der Vlugt. She is the daughter of Dutch actor Bram van der Vlugt. The first album, Drink Me from which this excellent cut is taken from, was released in 1995. It reached #16 of the UK Albums Chart.
That whole album in in the same vein as this track. If you like this, I urge you to track it down, make yourself a pot of tea or settle down with something stronger, transport yourself to the

Chemistry sets were educational toys allowing the user (typically a bored teenager) to perform simple chemistry experiments.
In the United Kingdom, Thomas Salter Science produced a series of seven chemistry sets in the 1970s. mainstays in these sets were vials of chemicals, exotic labels, test tubes and cork stoppers, an instruction manual, litmus paper, safety goggles and a burner of some description.
Amateur chemistry or home chemistry is the pursuit of chemistry as a private hobby. It should not be confused with clandestine chemistry, which involves the illicit production of controlled drugs.
Throughout much of the 20th century, amateur chemistry was an unexceptional hobby, with high-quality chemistry sets readily available, and laboratory suppliers freely selling to hobbyists. For example, Linus Pauling had no difficulty in procuring potassium cyanide at the age of eleven. However, due to increasing concerns about terrorism, drugs and safety, suppliers became increasingly reluctant to sell to amateurs, and chemistry sets were steadily toned down. This trend has gradually continued, leaving hobbyists (suspected of working with Al-Qaeda or similar) in many parts of the world without access to most reagents.

A very nice dark fruity, cake spiced, gingery on the burp porter style beer, well worth a try. It had flavours not unlike a Scottish clootie dumpling, if you have ever encountered one of those.

Burton upon Trent, also known as Burton-on-Trent or simply Burton, is a large town straddling the River Trent in the east of Staffordshire, England. Its associated adjective is 'Burtonian'.
Burton is best known for its brewing heritage, home to over a dozen breweries in its heyday. It originally grew up around Burton-on-Trent Abbey, the monastery of St. Modwen, and had grown into a busy market town by the early modern period. While Burton's great bridge over the Trent was in poor repair by the early 16th century it served as 'a comen passage to and fro many countries to the grett releff and comfort of travellyng people', according to the abbot. The town, which had an estimated population of 64,449 (2001 Census), lies within the National Forest.
