Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EE4M53 - Editorial photograph of a colourful Hello Wigan community mural painted on a brick gable end beside an outdoor bar seating area in Wigan town centre, Greater Manchester. The image shows local street art, red café chairs, a fenced terrace, painted flowers and the large word WIGAN, making it useful for stories about northern towns, civic identity, hospitality, nightlife, independent bars, urban regeneration, public art and changing high streets. The picture also has strong current-affairs relevance after the May 2026 Wigan Council local elections, when Reform UK made major gains across the borough while Labour suffered heavy losses in the seats being contested. Available reporting and election summaries indicate that Labour was badly hit, but also that Labour still retained overall control of Wigan Council after the vote, so the image should be captioned cautiously rather than saying Reform UK became the council's new leadership. The scene can illustrate a former Labour heartland reacting to a sharp local political shift, voter disillusionment, the decline of long-established party loyalties, right-wing populism, anti-establishment voting, and national pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer following poor Labour local election results. The mural's welcoming wording creates a striking contrast with the harder political story of a borough where Reform UK support surged in May 2026. It is suitable for editorial use on Wigan, Leigh, Greater Manchester politics, the 2026 local elections, Labour losses, Reform UK gains, town-centre culture, community art, northern identity, civic pride, working-class towns, post-industrial communities, social change, pubs, bars, beer gardens and the relationship between local place branding and national political mood. The visible fresh green leaves suggest spring or early summer, with bright daylight and a changeable northern sky.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8E1HD - A bright pink Gumdrop chewing gum recycling bin is fixed to a post in Warrington town centre as part of efforts to tackle discarded gum, pavement staining and street litter. The sign invites people to dispose of used chewing gum in a dedicated Gumdrop container rather than leaving it on paving, walls, benches or public spaces. Warrington Borough Council's street cleaning guidance tells residents and visitors to put litter and chewing gum in the bin and reminds people that littering is a criminal offence. Gumdrop says its distinctive pink bins are designed specifically for waste chewing gum and that full Gumdrop bins are recycled together with their contents to make new Gumdrop bins, creating a closed-loop approach to a sticky and costly litter problem. The image is commercially useful for stories about town centre cleanliness, local authority environmental campaigns, anti-litter measures, street cleaning costs, recycling innovation, behavioural change, public realm management and the everyday challenge of keeping shopping streets, pavements and pedestrian areas clean. The vivid pink colour, recycling symbol, QR code, Gumdrop web address and clear GUM HERE message make the photograph instantly readable as a public information and waste prevention image. It can also illustrate wider debate about chewing gum litter, council budgets, civic pride, urban maintenance, high street decline, public behaviour, environmental education and the use of small, targeted design interventions to reduce nuisance waste. The Warrington setting gives the scene local editorial value, while the generic street background makes it suitable for broader UK stories about gum removal, litter enforcement, plastic alternatives, circular economy ideas and the visible infrastructure used to encourage better habits in busy town centres.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJ3YRG - Buxton Town Hall was opened in 1889 on the Market Place in Buxton, Derbyshire, England. It lies in the town's central Conservation Area overlooking The Slopes. It is a Grade-II-listed building.
The building was designed in the style of a French château (with a mansard roof crested with iron railings, Venetian windows and a clocktower with a cupola) by Manchester architect William Pollard (who also designed Buxton College's Gothic-style 'new building' in 1880). After the Market Hall (designed by Henry Currey) was destroyed by a fire in September 1885, the site was selected for the new town hall. The fire brigade with the town's new fire engine was unable to control the fire started by a paraffin lamp in one of the shops in the Market Hall. A competition was held in 1886 for the design of the new town hall. William Pollard's design won the £50 prize and James Salt's local firm was selected to build it at a tender of £8,900 (Salt also built the Entertainment Stage theatre, which is now the Pavilion Arts Centre). The chairman of the governing Local Board, Edward Milligan, laid the foundation stone in June 1887 (the year of the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria). The Marquess of Hartington conducted the official opening of the town hall on 26 June 1889.
The clock on the clock tower was a gift from the Duke of Devonshire's tenants in 1889, in honour of Lord Frederick Cavendish, who was stabbed to death aged 45 in the Phoenix Park Murders in Dublin in May 1882 (shortly after arriving to take up his new post as Chief Secretary for Ireland). There is a bust of Lord Cavendish (son of the 7th Duke of Devonshire) on display inside the town hall
Current use - High Peak Borough Council, formed in 1974, presently has administrative centres at Buxton Town Hall and Glossop Town Hall. Full Council meetings are usually held in Buxton or at Chapel-en-le-Frith Town Hall

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAJ317 - Birkenhead Town Hall is a civic building and former town hall in Birkenhead on the Wirral Peninsula in Merseyside, England. The building was the former administrative headquarters of the County Borough of Birkenhead, and more recently, council offices for the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral. Birkenhead Town Hall remains the location of the town's register office. However, since the closure of the Wirral Museum in 2010, there is uncertainty over the future purpose of the Grade II* listed building.
History
When Hamilton Square was designed in the early 19th century, a plot of land was made available for the siting of a town hall between Hamilton Street and Chester Street. Designed by local architect Christopher Ellison, the building was constructed using Scottish granite and sandstone from the now filled-in local quarry at Storeton. It was officially opened in 1887
The building consisted of a council chamber, offices, with a concert hall and function rooms known as the Assembly Rooms. Birkenhead's magistrates' court chambers are located in a separate building of the same design to the rear. The clock tower is 200 feet in height and displays four faces
the clock and five bells within were manufactured and fitted by Gillett & Co. (at a total cost of £900). After a fire in 1901, the upper part of the clock tower was rebuilt to a design by Henry Hartley. The rebuilding included a stained glass window by Gilbert P. Gamon representing Edward I's visit to Birkenhead Priory in 1277

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMPF - This image shows a street name sign for Vinegar Alley in Walthamstow, East London, clearly displaying the E17 postcode. The sign is mounted on a metal pole and set against a backdrop of leafy green trees, giving a strong sense of place within a residential urban neighbourhood.
Street signs such as this are widely used in editorial, travel and lifestyle imagery to represent location, navigation and local identity. The distinctive street name adds character and curiosity, making the image suitable for illustrating themes of London neighbourhoods, wayfinding, urban exploration and everyday street detail.
Photographed in daylight during the warmer months, the surrounding foliage suggests a calm, well-established residential area. The simple composition focuses attention on the typography and wording of the sign, allowing it to be used as a contextual image for stories about place, community, property, local history or urban living in East London.
Vinegar Alley forms part of the wider streetscape of Walthamstow, an area that has become increasingly popular for its village atmosphere, green spaces and strong sense of local character within the capital.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RA23BK - A close-up view of a cast iron street grid bearing the raised lettering Borough of Hornsey and the manufacturer's mark J Gibb & Co, London. The surface shows extensive weathering and rust, with traces of blue paint remaining within the diamond-patterned ironwork, highlighting the long service life of traditional municipal infrastructure.
The Borough of Hornsey existed as a local authority until its abolition in 1965, when it was merged into the London Borough of Haringey. Street furniture marked with its name represents a surviving fragment of pre-Greater London administrative history. J Gibb & Co was among the manufacturers supplying cast iron covers and grids to London boroughs during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when local authorities commonly specified their own branded infrastructure.
Photographed tightly to emphasise texture, colour, and typography, the image functions both as documentary evidence of historic local government and as an abstract study of industrial materials. It is suitable for illustrating themes of London's municipal past, industrial manufacturing, urban archaeology, and the physical traces of former borough identities embedded in everyday streetscapes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PH9KWA - Warrington's Own Buses is a municipal bus company which operates a network of services within the Borough of Warrington and the surrounding area, including Altrincham, Leigh, Earlestown, Wigan, Halton, Bolton and Northwich.
The company previously traded as Warrington Borough Transport up until 2006 and as Network Warrington between 2006 and 2018. With the launch of the 'Cheshire Cats' brand in 2018 the company rebranded as Warrington's Own Buses.
History
Warrington Corporation Tramways started operating a network of five radial tramways from the town centre in 1902, with the first motor bus service starting in 1913. Buses replaced trams on routes starting in 1931, with the infrastructure starting to require major renewal which could not be justified economically. The last tram operated in 1935
Warrington was designated as a new town in 1968, which led to new housing estates planned in the Birchwood and Westbrook areas of town. As such, Warrington Borough Council Transport Department started operating new services to these new developments as they started to grow in the 1970s and beyond. The department also began operating new services jointly with Crosville upon the split of the old Stockport based North Western Road Car Company in 1972.
To comply with the Transport Act 1985, Warrington Borough Transport was incorporated in 1986. The company's mission was that if money could be made by operating services deemed uneconomic by other operators, then it should assume operation. This policy led to an increase in services operated as other bus companies who ran into the area decided to concentrate on their own core areas
In April 2018, the company was rebranded as Warrington's Own Buses
Warrington's Own Buses operate 96 routes across the Warrington borough, Cheshire and Greater Manchester. With 50 of them being school/college contract routes

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PG60W3 - The Borough of Waverley is a local government district with borough status in Surrey, England. The borough's headquarters are in the town of Godalming
other notable settlements are the towns of Farnham and Haslemere and the large village of Cranleigh. At the 2021 Census, the population of the borough was 128,200.
Waverley borders the borough of Guildford to the north, the Mole Valley district to the east, the Horsham and Chichester districts of West Sussex to the south, and the East Hampshire and Hart districts and the borough of Rushmoor in Hampshire to the west and northwest. The borough is named after Waverley Abbey, near Farnham, the earliest Cistercian monastery in Britain. Blackheath Common, in the north of the borough, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Waverley is a Wealden borough, bounded to the north by the Hog's Back section of the North Downs and by the Greensand Ridge. It has the most green space in absolute terms in Surrey at 293.1 km2 (113 sq. mi.) according to the central government-compiled Generalised Land Use database of January 2005, approximately half of which is woodland.
Much of the west of the borough echoes former ownership by the abbey, such as Waverley Cricket Club and the Waverley Arms pubs in Farnham and elsewhere. Equally echoed are the tens of square miles held under Farnham holding of the Bishop of Winchester which took in the western parishes of Frensham and Churt as well as much of Farnham parish since the early 12th century when one such Bishop, Henry of Winchester and of Blois established Farnham Castle as the See's episcopal home but which is today the borough's main surviving castle and a museum to the period.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PG60WM - The Lammas Lands is an area of grassy floodplain meadows running alongside the River Wey in the centre of Godalming managed by the ranger service of Waverley Borough Council. The site is an important flood relief plain, open space and local amenity for the town of Godalming
The history of the site as flood meadows goes back to Norman times although over the years the area has been reduced in size by adjoining development and is now about 32ha. The hydrology of the site was changed by the construction of Hell Ditch as a relief channel during the fifteenth century, the Wey navigation channel in the eighteenth century and the construction of the railway in the nineteenth century. The site is a locally designated Site of Nature Conservation Importance for its plant communities and grassland flora, including Meadow Saxifrage, Black Knapweed and Meadow Barley. It is also important for its wetland invertebrates and birds. Part of the area is also categorised as an Area of High Archaeological Potential and designated as an Area of Strategic Visual Importance by Waverley Borough Council and the whole area is registered common land with public rights of access.
It is important that the meadows continue to be managed both as an uninterrupted
flood plain and for its landscape, amenity and wildlife. The Council are producing a management plan for the site to guide management over the next ten years.
Although not nationally designated the area has high local importance as a flood plain (reducing the risk of flooding to adjoining parts of the town) and for its biological and archaeological interest and landscape. It is also valuable amenity land, heavily used and much loved by the local community as an open space for walking, dog walking and nature study
For all the above interests, it is important that the site be retained as open grassland, as without management, it would speedily revert to scrub and woodland. The most sustainable and traditional management is by grazing

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PG60X6 - Godalming Borough Hall is a municipal building in Bridge Street in Godalming, England. The building is the meeting place of Godalming Town Council.
Following significant population growth, especially after the London and South Western Railway reached the town in 1849, the area became a municipal borough with the Pepper Pot as its town hall in 1875. In May 1907 tenders were invited from contractors to extend the public hall in Bridge Street to the west to create new municipal buildings for the borough. The extension was built in red brick with stone dressings and the work was completed in 1908. The design of the enlarged structure involved an asymmetrical main frontage with ten bays facing onto Bridge Street
the central section of three bays, which slightly projected forward, featured arcading on the ground floor, three sash windows with stone surrounds on the first floor and a pediment above with an oculus in the tympanum. The left hand section featured, in the central bay, a doorway with a canopy on the ground floor and a panel containing the borough coat of arms on the first floor. The right hand section featured, in the end bay which slightly projected forward, a round headed doorway on the ground floor and a tri-part sash window on the first floor with a pediment above.
The building continued to serve as the meeting place of Godalming Borough Council for much of the 20th century, but ceased to be the local seat of government when Waverley Borough Council was formed with its headquarters in Guildford in 1974. Waverley Council moved to new council offices in The Burys just behind the borough hall in 1980. The borough hall subsequently became the meeting place for Godalming Town Council.
Works of art in the borough hall include a portrait by Godfrey Kneller of the locally-born sailor, Admiral Sir John Balchen, who became governor of the Greenwich Naval Hospital in March 1743

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KG46KA - Lymm voters set to be removed from Warrington election map
Voters in Lymm will no longer elect an MP for Warrington should a new scheme be approved.
But revised proposals for new electoral boundaries will mean residents of Thelwall will still be in the Warrington South constituency.
The Boundary Commission is currently reviewing all boundaries across the country.
Its initial suggestion was that Lymm and Thelwall move to the Tatton ward covering Knutsford and other parts of Cheshire.
However following a long consultation period, a final plan has been revealed. It means Lymm will still be moved from Warrington South to Tatton on the electoral map.
Thelwall will stay in Warrington South, where Conservative Andy Carter is currently MP.
With an electorate of 86,422, the number of voters in Warrington South is considerably above the permitted electorate range.
A new month-look consultation will now take place before a final report is sent to Parliament to consider in the summer.
Tim Bowden, Secretary to the Boundary Commission for England, said: Today's publication is the culmination of months of analysis and we have revised nearly half of our initial proposals based on what people have told us. We now believe we are close to the best map of constituencies that can be achieved under the rules we are working to.
However, we still want people to tell us what they think of this latest map before we submit our final recommendations to Parliament next year. This is our final consultation and I encourage you to participate in the 2023 Boundary Review.
Objections were received about Lymm no longer being included in a Warrington constituency but also 'appreciable support' for the proposals.
Andy Carter provided evidence that 'Thelwall is an integral part of central Warrington, and has limited connections or community ties with Lymm, despite parts being in the same ward'.
He proposed that the Lymm North & Thelwall ward be split in order to retain more electors

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M3JBM0 - There are various modes of transport available in Warrington.
Warrington has seven railway stations within its boundaries. The town has two main railway stations, Bank Quay on the London to Glasgow and Chester Warrington Newton-le-Willows Manchester lines, and Central on the Liverpool Widnes Manchester line and the Transpennine route. Bank Quay is much altered, but Central (built 1873) is of some architectural merit, featuring polychromatic brickwork. However, both main railway stations have suffered from years of under investment. A new entrance and concourse has been built at Bank Quay, and similar work started in July 2010 at Central station. There are also stations in the suburbs at Warrington West, Sankey, Glazebrook, Padgate and Birchwood.
The town and its districts are fairly well served by bus services. Warrington's Own Buses is the main provider of services, operating most of the day time bus routes. Arriva North West, First Greater Manchester. National Express also operate their long-distance services through Warrington. Most services that serve Warrington depart from and arrive at Warrington Interchange. However services can be caught from various points around the town centre, principally Rylands Street (for South and Eastbound routes), Academy Way (Inbound and Eastbound routes), Warrington Central for Northbound services, Sankey Street for Westbound, Eastbound and Southbound buses.

Architecture scholar Nicholas Pevsner described the splendid Hackney Empire, with its ornate terracotta exterior and sumptuous seventy-seven galleried auditorium as a key example of Victorian and Edwardian architecture. There is a statue of Thalia, the Greek muse of comedy, on the roof of the theatre: this was removed in 1979, but later reinstalled.
Charlie Chaplin, W. C. Fields, Stanley Holloway, Stan Laurel, Marie Lloyd, and Julie Andrews all performed there, when the Hackney Empire was a music hall.
Hackney Empire was a leading centre in the alternative comedy boom of the 1980s, and remains a venue for comedy.
Comedians who have performed at the venue include Frankie Boyle, Jack Whitehall, Jo Brand, Russell Brand, John Cleese, Jackie Clune, Greg Davies, Felix Dexter, Ben Elton, Harry Enfield, Craig Ferguson, Dawn French, Jeremy Hardy, Lily Savage, Lenny Henry, Bill Hicks, Harry Hill, Mark Linn-Baker, Martha Lewis and Eve Polycarpo, Paul Merton, Jennifer Saunders, Arthur Smith, Mark Steel, and Tim Vine.

A visionary young artist has created a buzz around Warrington with a jaw-dropping display created to celebrate the relationship between the town and its people.
Warrington artist Cameron Brown has transformed Warrington Bus Interchange with a powerfully poignant collection of portraits.
As you are now so once were we is a thought-provoking display of 48 portraits painted onto the glass of the bus station as a touching tribute to the people of Warrington, the impact they have had on their town, and the role our town played in their lives.
Cameron explained: The aim behind the piece was to celebrate the impact that the people of Warrington can have on the town, often without realising, and to recognise the impact that the town can have on us as a collective.
It was an attempt to try and remember the people that came before, appreciate the people that are presently having an effect on the town, and to be aware of the impact we can have on what is still to come.
Taking its name from James Joyce's novel Ullyses, Cameron's work attempts to add a sense of context and belonging to our own individual lives, to encourage people to look back at what has gone before and how they have arrived in the position they find themselves in today.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTJYMB - Open letter on LTNs, from Leader of the Council, Cllr Russ Bowden
The creation of Low Traffic Neighbourhoods is supported, promoted and actively funded by the current government and they are something that we have given a lot of detailed thought to over recent years.
Since 2018, when we undertook one of the largest listening exercises we've ever done to help form the Central 6 Regeneration Masterplan, we have been considering ways to address a key issue that has been consistently raised to us there is too much traffic, going too quickly, along residential streets
Health benefits of walking and cycling are well-known and widely acknowledged. They include better physical and mental health, lower rates of cancer, heart disease and stroke, and, ultimately, less overall pressure on health services. In some areas of the UK, local NHS Trusts are in fact paying for LTNs to be installed, as they are such a powerful tool for improving public health. Improving health is a major challenge for us in Warrington
Broad consultation on the Central 6 Regeneration Masterplan saw concerns being raised from Westy,Orford & Latchford, including a petition - read more at https://www.warrington.gov.uk/news/low-traffic-neighbourhoods

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M107FJ - Edward Williams, better known by his bardic name Iolo Morganwg 10 March 1747 18 December 1826), was a Welsh antiquarian, poet and collector. He was seen as an expert collector of Medieval Welsh literature, but it emerged after his death that he had forged several manuscripts, notably some of the Third Series of Welsh Triads. Even so, he had a lasting impact on Welsh culture, notably in founding the secret society known as the Gorsedd, through which Iolo Morganwg successfully coopted the 18th-century Eisteddfod revival. The philosophy he spread in his forgeries has had an enormous impact upon neo-Druidism. His bardic name is Welsh for Iolo of Glamorgan
Edward Williams was born at Pen Onn, near Llancarfan in Glamorgan, Wales, and raised in the village of Flemingston (or Flimston
Trefflemin in Welsh). He followed his father as a stonemason. In Glamorgan he took an interest in manuscript collection, and learnt to compose Welsh poetry from poets such as Lewis Hopkin, Rhys Morgan, and especially Siôn Bradford. In 1773 he moved to London, where the antiquary Owen Jones introduced him to the city's Welsh literary community, and where he became a member of the Gwyneddigion Society: he would later also be active in the Cymreigyddion Society. In 1777 he returned to Wales, where he married and tried farming, but without success. During this time he produced his first forgeries.
Williams's son, Taliesin (bardic name, Taliesin ab Iolo), whom he had named after the early medieval bard Taliesin, later went on to collect his manuscripts in 26 volumes, a selection being published as the Iolo Manuscripts by the Welsh Manuscripts Society in 1848
From an early date Williams was concerned with preserving and maintaining the literary and cultural traditions of Wales. He produced a large number of manuscripts as evidence for his claims that ancient Druidic tradition had survived the Roman conquest, the conversion of the populace to Christianity, the persecution of bards under King

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JH070G - The Lilford Hotel in Bradshawgate was built in 1876 at a cost of 3,000 pounds. The Lilford Hotel originally included four cellars, nine ground floor rooms, 12 bedrooms, stabling and a coach house and could cater for 70 diners but only offered four beds and stabled six horses in 1890. Bed spaces were limited by the large billiards and reception rooms. It was also a popular venue with cyclists in Leigh including the Buffaloes cycling club. The original landlord was ejected in 1877 for licensing irregularities and paying 120 pounds rent per annum - five times the normal rents in those days, then in 1880 Joseph Jackson was landlord and in 1895 he built a brewery to the rear.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MN7RAM - Warrington Corporation Tramways was the owner and operator of an electric tramway system in the early 20th century serving the town of Warrington until 1931, at the time a county borough of Lancashire, England
After construction of a power generating station at Howley in 1900 that the Corporation was encouraged to apply to Parliament for powers to lay down and operate an electric tramway system along the five main arterial roads within the town boundary. This was granted as the Tramways Orders Confirmation (No. 4) Act 1900 (63 & 64 Vic. cap. cci) and construction began in 1901, with responsibility for the operation assumed by the Corporation's Electricity and Tramways Committee under the name of Warrington Corporation Tramways
The official Board of Trade inspection of the Latchford and Sankey Bridges branches was made by Lt. Col. P.G. von Donop R.E. on 17 April 1902. Despite a minor hiccup involving a broken trolley pole, permission was given for operations on the two lines to begin. The first tram left Rylands Street for Latchford at 7.40 a.m. on 21 April. Operation of the Sankey Bridges route did not start for another two days until enough trams were available for service, thus a through service between the two lines commenced on 23 April. Eight open-top double-deck trams built by G.F. Milnes & Co. of Birkenhead were purchased for the opening, with a further 13 arriving later in the year
The line south along Wilderspool Causeway initially operated to a terminus at Stafford Road just north of the Manchester Ship Canal, being at the time the boundary between Lancashire and Cheshire. On the Cheshire side of the canal was the village of Stockton Heath, which may have been expected to provide a more suitable terminus. However, strong opposition from Stockton Heath Parish Council was encountered
Warrington Corporation applied for a Light Railway Order to cover the sections north of Stockton Heath.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P53BT5 - Vivary Park is a public open space in Taunton, Somerset, England.
The Sherford Stream, a tributary of the River Tone, flows through the 7.5 hectares (19 acres) park, which is located near the centre of the town. It contains two main wide open spaces, as well as a war memorial dating from 1922, a miniature golf course, tennis courts, two children's playgrounds, a model railway track which was added in 1979, and an 18-hole, 4,620-yard (4,220 m), par-63 golf course. The park includes trees, rose beds and herbaceous borders, with around 56,000 spring and summer bedding plants being used each year. The rose garden includes the Royal National Rose Society Provincial Trial Ground.
The park is a garden of the European Garden Heritage Network.
The park stands on land that was formerly a medieval fish farm, or vivarium, for Taunton Priory and Taunton Castle. Although nothing remains above ground of these lakes, they are the origin of the name Vivary. Entries in pipe rolls of the 13th and 14th centuries show that bream, pike, and eels were supplied from the vivarium to the Castle and sometimes to the royal household. These sources identify two ponds, the magnum vivarium, or great pond, which probably occupied the low-lying area of the present-day golf-course, and the parvum vivarium or little pond, within what is now the park proper. When a trench for a new sewer was cut through the park and its golf course during the 1970s, archaeologists were able to identify the deposits of silt left behind by the medieval fish ponds.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H4EGBY - Warrington Bus Interchange
The building opened on 21 August 2006, next to the site of a temporary terminus that had been in use for the past thirteen months. The new interchange was built in conjunction with the extension and upgrade of the adjoining Golden Square shopping centre, and replaced the previous bus station which dated from 1979.
The interchange consists of 19 departure stands, numbered from 1 to 19, all of which employ a drive-in reverse-out layout. Each stand has a computerised information screen which also ties into the real-time information system. All stands are served from the main concourse building, which contains toilets, two coffee shops, and a combined travel and tourist information office. There is access to the shopping centre via escalators and lifts. The exits on the eastern side of the building lead onto Winwick Street, on which can be found a taxi rank and Warrington Central railway station within around 100 metres.
The bus station is the terminus for all local bus services within Warrington. Regional services operate to neighbouring cities Liverpool, Manchester and Chester, as well as to Wigan, Leigh, The Trafford Centre, Altrincham, Northwich, Runcorn, Widnes and St Helens. A small number of National Express long distance coach services operate to destinations including London, Edinburgh, Bristol, Southend-on-Sea and Southport . The majority of bus services are operated by Network Warrington, who have their own information office within the main concourse selling season tickets. Other services are provided by Arriva North West, Halton Transport, and First Greater Manchester
Centrelink
Stand 1 is the departure point for the Centrelink bus service, which operates on a circular route around the town centre via the Town Hall, Bank Quay station, Centre Park business park, the market and Central station. The service runs every 20 minutes during Monday to Friday daytimes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H4HKRM - The former site of Grappenhall Hall School could be developed into a boutique hotel or new homes if the land goes up for sale later this year.
Residents are being asked what they think the old school grounds should be used for as part of a consultation by Warrington Borough Council.
The school for pupils with special educational needs moved from its site on Church Lane to Green Lane in Padgate in September 2015.
Since then, the council has asked the Department of Education for permission to dispose of the land, either by selling it or developing it for another use.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H8FK7G - The Mersey Gateway is a new road bridge across the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal in north-west England, which began construction in May 2014. The bridge will be located approximately 1.5 km (0.93 mi) to the east of the existing Silver Jubilee Bridge that connects the towns of Widnes and Runcorn. It will connect the Central Expressway in Runcorn with the Eastern Bypass and Speke Road in Widnes.
It is envisaged that the new bridge will be a toll bridge, with three lanes in each direction. The Halton Borough Council has also stated that the current bridge will also become a toll bridge, making Halton the only borough in England separated by only toll bridges, although Halton residents will be exempt from charges. It was also put forward that the current bridge may be reduced to one lane in each direction for vehicles, with the other two lanes being converted into cycle lanes and/or pedestrian lanes.
The draft design is for a cable-stayed bridge with three towers across the river, and a second bridge across the canal. The total length of the crossing will be 1,000 m (3,300 ft).
The scheme was put on hold in June 2010 awaiting the outcome of the Treasury's Spending Review, but on 17 October 2010 it was confirmed by Chancellor George Osborne that the £431m plan would go ahead. During the 2014 Budget, Osborne announced a £270m guarantee for the project.
After extensive site preparation, construction work began on 7 May 2014, with the bridge due to be finished by late 2017.
In addition to their role as designer, Knight Architects led the design through CABE Design Review, prior to successfully achieving planning consent, and later coordinated the production of a detailed guide governing visual and landscape aspects of the entire 9km corridor. The practice is part of the Client Procurement Team

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY5KD4 - Fred Wood (1876-1934) In honour of a forgotten hero, who on this day in 1907 undoubtedly prevented the deaths of hundreds of local workers when the couplings broke on a heavily laden goods train as it approached this station. Over 50 laden wagons sped back down the line heading towards Dukinfield Station and an occupied 'workers' train. Turning the points, he forced the runaway train onto a track towards Dukinfield goods yard, narrowly averting a major disaster.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DN6NHM - Spike Island is an island in the estuary of the River Mersey, in North West England, flanked by the Sankey Canal. It is a reclaimed toxic waste site, considered a birthplace of the British chemical industry, and forms a part of Widnes in the Halton borough of Cheshire.
Its maze of abandoned chemical factories, rail lines, canal and industrial dockage, and industrial pollution, which had declined into a rust belt toxic wilderness, was reclaimed as woodland, wetlands and green space between 1975 and 1982. A surviving warehouse is now the home of the Catalyst Museum, the only science museum in the UK solely devoted to chemistry.
Spike Island was the site of a famous outdoor concert by The Stone Roses in May 1990. A film about the concert was released in 2013, and is called Spike Island.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DHGYWM - The Metropolitan Borough of Walsall is a local government district in the West Midlands, England, with the status of a metropolitan borough. It is named after its largest settlement, Walsall, but covers a larger area which also includes the towns of Aldridge, Bloxwich, Brownhills, Darlaston and Willenhall. For Eurostat purposes Walsall and Wolverhampton is a NUTS 3 region (code UKG35) and is one of five boroughs or unitary districts that comprise the West Midlands NUTS 2 region. The borough had an estimated population of 254,500 in 2007.
The current boundaries were set as part of the provisions of the Local Government Act 1972, with a change to the north of the borough in 1994. It is bounded on the west by the City of Wolverhampton, the south by the Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell, to the south east by the City of Birmingham, and by the Staffordshire districts of Lichfield, Cannock Chase and South Staffordshire to the east, north and northwest respectively. Most of the borough is highly industrialised and densely populated, but areas around the north and east of the borough are open space.
In 1986 the borough became an effective unitary authority when the West Midlands County Council was abolished. However it remains part of the West Midlands for ceremonial purposes, and for functions such as policing, fire and public transport.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXKGB - LGBT Warrington is organised by LGBT members who are all volunteers. The group has built great relationships with partners, which include the Council, police, health and local businesses.
They are here to help and welcome anyone who would like to join us to stamp out the stigma people may have on the LGBT community.
The group offers support to those who need it on a 1-2-1 basis and is treated with great confidentiality, and point people in the right direction of the services they require.
They meet throughout the year mainly to have a brew and chat about life in general, to meet and make new friends, and for those who require extra support, to help by signposting to relevant services in Warrington. We also at times hold activities such as bowling, theatre trips, quizzes and games.
They also have nights out in the town centre at Cotton Mill or Show Bar and take part with events they are holding, or even have the odd night out to Manchester to Canal Street or to the theatre.
During the year they are also visited by guest speakers.
They welcome visitors and potential new members whatever their sexuality, though is open to 18+ only.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXXWJ - LGBT Warrington is organised by LGBT members who are all volunteers.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D91FA9 - Three Wheelie bins for different uses in a street, Warrington, Cheshire, England WA4 2PL
The wheelie bin is a waste container on wheels designed to make it easier for users to transport heavy loads of refuse to the curb or other pick-up point. More recently it has application for transporting stolen goods on bin day in residential suburbs. George Dempster invented the Dempster-Dumpster system in the 1930s for automatically loading the contents of standardized mobile steel containers onto the dustcart.
This led to the classic Dempster Dumpmaster waste collection vehicle of the 1950s, but wheelie bins did not become commonplace until the 1970s. The term dumpster is frequently used as a generic term for a large MGB or the non-mobile variety (known as a skip in the UK or Australia) in the United States. In the US residential wheelie bins are also generically called Herbie Curbies.
The modern bin is a German invention of the 1970s in a patent held by Schneider, and licensed to other companies outside Germany. The smaller wheelie bins, for domestic or light commercial use, typically hold 120 to 360 litres (26 to 79 imp gal
32 to 95 US gal), with 240 litres (53 imp gal
63 US gal) being the most common. They have a hinged flap lid and two wheels on the bottom on the same side as the lid hinge. There is a bar behind the hinge on the top of the bin which is used to move it, or to hoist it up onto a garbage truck for emptying.
The 240 litre bin is usually considered to have the same capacity as three traditional waste containers. In the UK, wheelie bins for non-recyclable domestic waste are currently collected either weekly or once a fortnight, depending on the local Council's waste management policies.

In appearance it is similar to smooth gloss paint when applied but it remains slippery indefinitely thereby preventing any intruder from gaining a foothold.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM9AW6 - Pie and mash is a traditional working-class food, originating in the East End of London. Pie, mash and eel shops have been in London since the 19th century, and are still common in East and South London and in many parts of Kent and Essex. The shops may serve stewed or jellied eels.
During the Victorian era, industrial air pollution tended to be worse in the east and south east of London because of the prevailing westerly wind, with the result that the East End was settled more by the working classes, while the western part of the city was home to higher social classes. The working class were poor and favoured foodstuffs that were cheap, in plentiful supply and easy to prepare.
The savoury pie had long been a traditional food, and its small handsized form also made it a transportable meal, protected from dirt by its cold pastry crust, and filled with cheap minced meat, usually mutton. Adding cheap mashed potatoes, together with a sauce made with fish stock and parsley, made it a plate-based sit-down meal.
Jellied eels are often associated with pie and mash, as European eels cooked in gelatine also became a common worker's meal since eels were one of the few forms of fish that could survive in the heavily polluted River Thames and London's other rivers at that time. Supply was plentiful through the late 1800s, particularly from the Dutch fishing boats landing catches at Billingsgate Fish Market.
Since 2010, as revealed in a joint study by the Zoological Society of London and the Environment Agency, the number of eels captured in research traps in the River Thames fell from 1,500 in 2005 to 50 in 2010, meaning most eels used in pie and mash shops are now from the Netherlands and Northern Ireland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM9AWB - Pie and mash is a traditional working-class food, originating in the East End of London.

14 is the 3rd discrete semiprime ( 2 . 7 ) and the 3rd member of the (2.q) discrete semiprime family. The number following 14\u201415 is itself a discrete semiprime and this is the first such pair of discrete semiprimes. The next example is the pair commencing 21.
The aliquot sum \u03c3(n) of 14 is 10, also a discrete semiprime and this is again the first example of a discrete semiprime having an aliquot sum in the same form. 14 has an aliquot sequence of 6 members ( 14,10,8,7,1,0) 14 is the third composite number in the 7-aliquot tree.
Fourteen is itself the Aliquot sum of two numbers
the discrete semiprime 22, and the square number 196.
It is the base of the tetradecimal notation.
In base fifteen and higher bases (such as hexadecimal), fourteen is represented as E.
14 is the atomic number of silicon, its also the number of Stations of the Cross and number of Infalliables (Masoomeen) in Shia Ithna-Asheri Islam.
Its the minimum age limit to drive a 50cc motorbike in Italy.

The bands best known track, B-Sided with 'Take My Temperature', it documents a rowdy night out in their native Leeds, Yorkshire with members from the former band Black Wire. Professional Yorkshiremen, the track uses words like 'thee' to press the point home. Mention of chip fat (not oil) is also significant. A vegan friend of mine living in Yorkshire was always bemused to see chip shops proudly displaying signs like 'Everything fried in lard', or similar.
A friday or saturday night in Leeds can indeed become lairy when shell-suited folk ask for a pound for the buz or a condom. You are well advised to spot them at 50 paces and make good your escape! In fairness, not an experience exclusive to Yorkhire.
The track mentions John Smeaton ('an old Leodiensian'). He was a Civil Engineer, born in Austhorpe, Leeds 1724. Boris Johnson described the Kaisers as 'the weeds from Leeds' and compared the lyrics with that of 'White Riot' by The Clash.

Lizzie and Owen are both Appleton college students, this is part of Bridgewater High School, Warrington, England UK. On this saturday they garnered over 160 signatures, including mine. Lizzie told me that she received some very positive feedback from members of the public who could relate to the situation because they'd either been to university themselves or who had children either currently attending or wanting to in the future. One woman actually told me she went to University when it was free, but said she wouldn't now due to the amount of debt.
Some people who had seen her protesting decided to alert the police, exaggerating the situation, however the police turned out to be really supportive and encouraging! By all accounts the police are currently picking up lots of overtime due to these protests as the cutbacks will not allow deployment of additional officers.
Lizzie was clear where she thought the blame should be. 'I think what frustrates students the most is the role deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has played in the proposals. during his election campaign he made a ridiculous and highly ambitious claim that if his party won, he would make all University education free. considering the current climate, this proposal was never at all realistic, and i do agree that students should contribute some money towards their higher education. however, for Nick Clegg to have voted in favour of the raising of tuition fees shows he has completely gone against his word to the public and future students. what annoys me further is the fact that Vince Cable- a Lib Dem minister- who was responsible for drawing up the plans to increase fees by treble the amount threatened to abstain over the issue
being responsible for it he should have accepted the consequences for his actions'.
'if the legislation is passed as intended in 2012, then students in the UK will be paying more than any others in Europe. what the increase in fees represents is the Tories once again focussing on helping those at the top. it means that only those who can afford it will be able to go, who aren't necessarily always going to be the people who work the hardest and achieve the best results
it will make it a place of elitists once again. this coalition government is being governed solely by one party, with the Lib Dems cowardly giving in to everything asked of them. the strikes and protests led by the students were admirable, and while i don't condone the violence they were clearly provoked at times- members of the royal family being driven right through the centre of the protests. it is reported that Nick Clegg had to get the Tories to agree with some of his policies before he agreed to vote in favour of the increased tuition fees. it was called a compromise. but was it a compromise worth taking?!...... Definitely not!!!'
Interestingly, only English students will be shouldering these cuts, although MP's from right across the UK voted it in. Surely about time some form of devolved English parliament should be looked into....
With us only days before ushering in a new year, I think we might be seeing a bit more of this kind of thing!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HCYE - The Guildhall and jail on St Peter's Hill in Grantham was commissioned in 1866 by Mayor Thomas Winter after criminal Jesse Dale, who was serving 15 years for stealing, twice walked out of the town's original jail in 1864.
This original Guildhall and jail building stood on the corner of Guildhall Street and High Street and dated from 1787. After Jesse's second escape, the governor at the time William Mayer was sacked and a government inspector condemned the building. The inmates had to be sent to Lincoln. The site of the demolished Guildhall was bought by the Stamford, Boston and Spalding Bank (later Barclays) and is now home to the Goose at the Bank pub.
On the current Guildhall site was an old school The Firs housed in a former town house. This and the adjoining land were bought for £2,100. Lincoln architect William Watkins drew up the design for the new building and the work was carried out Mr Wartnaby, of Little Gonerby, for £7,260.

This shot was inspired by an article I stumbled across at WM Magazine. Not one of my usual reads I must admit, but I was intreiged by teh suggestion that women burned their bras to obtain the vote.
I am no expert on Manchester Moss Side historic icon Emmeline Pankhurst, although I know arson was one of the suffragette tactics, I have not read anything suggesting they burnt their support garments. I suspect this is more a mix up with the 1960's. As they say 'If you remember the swinging 60's, you probably wern't there!'.

The new modern, light and spacious Warrington bus interchange was built after 13 months of construction and opened August 21st 2006. The old unloved concrete bus station dated from the late 70's. Services from here serve most of Warrington and there are some other express services to Liverpool, London, Edinburgh, Bristol, Southend-on-sea and local airports.
A centrelink bus connects this part of town with Bank Quay the mainline north/south (west coast mainline for Virgin services) railway station. See www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3709536244/
Closure of the old bus station was marked back in 2005 by a 40-year-old bus which was the last to leave the station since it opened in 1979. Some 50 special guests with commemorative tickets were taken on a final tour by driver David Leigh.
Escalators and a coffee shop link it with the new expanded and spacious Golden Square shopping complex.
Warrington Central Railway Station is close by and this is a modern welcome to Warrington visitors from west and east bound local and trans-pennine express trains.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HDW8 - Warrington Bus Interchange (also known as Warrington Interchange) is a bus station in the town of Warrington, Cheshire, England.
All stands are served from the main concourse building, which contains toilets, access to the adjoining Bhs coffee shop and a combined travel and tourist information office. There is access to the shopping centre via escalators and lifts. The exits on the eastern side of the building lead onto Winwick Street, on which can be found a taxi rank and Warrington Central railway station within around 100 metres.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF0MWX - St Elphins Church Warrington Cheshire in the Borough Council WBC area, England North West UK United Kingdom . Close to Farrell street, College Close, A57, Salisbury St.
It is a Church Of England building . The church is dominated by its spire, 281 feet (86 m) high. It is the seventh highest in the country, the fifth highest parish church in the UK, after the St. Walburge's Church, Preston, St. James Church, Louth, St Mary Redcliffe, and St. Wulfram's Church, Grantham.
A place of worship has been present on the site since about 650 and the presence of a priest in Warrington was recorded in the Domesday Book. The earliest fabric in the church is in the chancel and the crypt, which survive from the church built in 1354 by Sir William Boteler. The church was badly damaged by the Parliamentary forces in the Civil War. Following this the tower was rebuilt in 1696 and the nave in 1770. The south aisle was added in the early 19th century. Most of the fabric of the present church is the result of an extensive restoration between 1859 and 1867 by Frederick and Horace Francis. It was during this restoration that the spire was added. The bells were recast in 1698 and again in 1884. In 1950 they were recast again and the clock was replaced.
Within the church, St Ann's Chapel was founded by Thomas Massey, rector of Warrington from 1448 to 1464. It continued to belong to the Massey family until they died out in 1748. The chapel was then acquired by the Patten family who built a vault to bury members of the family, the last being Lord Winmarleigh in 1892. The Lady Chapel was founded and endowed by Sir John Boteler in 1290. He and other family members were buried in the chapel. Maybe a mantra for our current troubled times?
Perhaps we should worry about our carbon footprint, walk a bit more rather than drive as much? Possibly eat less supermarket food, consume in season and cut down on our food air miles ? Think more about our neighbours, come to think of it, do you even know your neighbours? Some of our prejudges should maybe be put aside, the world's more interesting when it's diverse.
I must have passed this on Orford road coming into Padgate, Warrington Cheshire a few dozen times. To stop at the traffic lights makes you consider these four words a little more deeply. Next time you wait there to follow the A50 or to go to Birchwood following the A574, consider these words.
If you have had any thoughts when passing this, please leave a comment.
