Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1NRJP - In January 2023, government asked Greater Manchester for additional evidence to support our case for a¯non-charging¯Clean Air Plan.
We have submitted some of the evidence requested and will submit further evidence, which requires detailed modelling, at the end of June 2023.
Our investment-led, non-charging Clean Air Plan aims to tackle air pollution in a way that protects jobs, livelihoods and businesses.
Greater Manchester leaders believe that this is possible without the need for a charging Clean Air Zone.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JP9HTJ - The Whispering Knights is a 'portal dolmen' burial chamber that consists of four upright stones and a large fallen capstone. The so-called ˜portal' facade is formed by three stones that look like a giant doorway facing down the hill and it was probably intended to be seen from that side. Originally there were two or three more uprights to support the capstone which would have been placed on top, possibly at a rakish angle, to form a table-like 'dolmen' structure. At one time it was believed to be part of a long barrow, but excavations in the 1980s suggested that it is more likely to have been free-standing and intended to impress. The very large pillar-like stone on the left of the portal is the largest of all the Rollright Stones, and with the capstone in place on top (as it was until the 18th century) the chamber would have been even more striking. It is estimated that using rollers, levers and sledges it may have taken over 60 people to move and erect the stones. It is thought that there would have been a low platform of small stones round the sides and back.
By analogy with other such monuments, the Whispering Knights was probably one the earliest funerary monuments in Britain, perhaps built around 3,800 BC and the c.2m square chamber would have contained the disarticulated bones of several individuals. Early Neolithic, Beaker and early Bronze Age pottery found in the immediate vicinity suggests that the tomb was venerated over many centuries and a piece of human bone washed out from the chamber was radiocarbon dated to c.1700BC.
The monument got its name as part of the legend about the king and his army who were outwitted by a witch and turned to stone: because of the conspiratorial way in which the portal stones lean towards each other, the stones are said to be the treacherous knights conniving against the king, though others think they are praying. Intriguingly, although it looks as if the central slab of the portal should be supporting the pillars

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy JH6749 - Brexit: What is the Northern Ireland Protocol?
Northern Ireland Protocol - agreed with the European Union (EU) in 2019 - has been a source of tension since it came into force at the start of 2021.
Special trading arrangements were needed for Northern Ireland after the UK voted for Brexit in 2016. This is because it's the only part of the UK with a land border with an EU country - the Republic of Ireland.
Before Brexit, it was easy to transport goods across this border because both sides had the same EU trade rules. No checks or paperwork were necessary.
After Brexit, a new system was needed because the EU has strict food rules and requires border checks when certain goods - such as milk and eggs - arrive from non-EU countries.
UK and the EU agreed that protecting the 1998 Northern Ireland peace deal - the Good Friday Agreement - was an absolute priority. So, both sides signed the Northern Ireland Protocol as part of the Brexit withdrawal agreement, which is now part of international law.
Foreign Secretary Liz Truss says the Protocol has caused problems which had not been expected when the agreement was signed.
The government now wants to ditch parts of the deal.
It wants to create red lanes and green lanes for goods imported from Britain into Northern Ireland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY3KP6 - Francis Close (11 July 1797 “ 18 December 1882) was the Anglican rector of Cheltenham (1826“1856) and Dean of Carlisle (1856“1881).
Close was born on 11 July 1797 in Frome, Somerset, the youngest son of the Rev. Henry Jackson Close, who was at one time Rector of Bentworth, near Alton, in Hampshire. Enrolling at St. John's College, Cambridge in 1816 he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1820, and was elevated to MA in 1825. During the same time period, he was ordained a deacon in 1820, and as a priest the following year. In 1822 he was assigned as curate of Willesden and Kingsbury in the London area. Two years later, in 1824, he was assigned to Cheltenham and the parish church of St Mary's, and when the rector died in 1826, he was elevated to that office.
Close served as rector for thirty years, where he was a popular preacher and a noted evangelical. He was a vociferous opponent of the Oxford Movement. He advocated for the creation of a training college for schoolteachers and opposed alcohol, tobacco, horse racing and theatrical amusements. He was involved in the provision of new churches in Cheltenham. On 24 November 1856, he was nominated to be Dean of Carlisle Cathedral by the Prime Minister, Lord Palmerston, and the appointment was approved by the Queen. That same year, the Archbishop of Canterbury conferred a Lambeth Doctorate of Divinity upon Close. He remained as Dean of Carlisle until 1881, when failing health forced him to resign. At the time of his resignation, he was the oldest of all deans in the Church of England He died in Penzance the following year, on 12 December 1882, and was buried in Carlisle Cathedral

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY3KPA - Old Town Hall History and Information
A prominent two storey Grade I Listed Building of Medieval origin, the Old Town Hall mostly dates from the 17th and 18th centuries.
1345 is the earliest reference to the predecessor of the building, variously termed the ˜Toll booth', 'Common Hall' and ˜Motehall' or ˜Moot Hall' in later medieval sources. In 1668 the medieval hall was demolished to make way for a new one on the same site. It is this building, finished in 1669, with numerous subsequent alterations and extensions which survives today.
Over the years, the ground floor of the building has consistently remained in commercial and retail use whilst the grander public rooms at first floor level have accommodated a number of important civic functions including, most notably the Courts of Assize until 1881, the City's Magistrates Court until 1941, and Council Chamber and offices of the City of Carlisle Corporation until 1964.
The first floor accommodates the Tourist Information Centre and Assembly Room.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEEF91 - Sandy Row is a street in south Belfast, Northern Ireland. It lends its name to the surrounding residential community, which is predominantly Protestant working-class. The Sandy Row area had a population of 2,153 in 2001. It is a staunchly loyalist area of Belfast, being a traditional heartland for affiliation with the paramilitary Ulster Defence Association (UDA) and the Orange Order.
Sandy Row is situated in south Belfast, beginning at the edge of the city centre, close to the Europa Hotel. The road runs south from the Boyne Bridge (formerly the Saltwater Bridge) over the old Dublin railway line beside Great Victoria Street station, then crosses the Donegall Road and ends at the bottom of the Lisburn Road. At the north end of the road was the famous Murray's tobacco factory, which was first opened in 1810, while at the other is a large Orange hall.

\u00bfWhats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
New Young Pony Club are a five-piece rock band from London, UK. They consist of now London-based vocalist Tahita Bulmer and producer Andy Spence. They shared a love of punk rock and dance music. The founding pair began writing together, originally only for Bulmer to perform.
Spence later assumed a larger role when they decided to form a proper band, so the duo recruited the single-monikered Lou on keyboards, Igor Volk on bass, and Sarah Jones on percussion. The band formed in 2005, and released two limited edition 7' singles ('The Get Go' and this track 'Ice Cream') on indie label Tirk Recordings. Later that year they were discovered by more established Australian label Modular Recordings, and signing a worldwide deal.
The band's name came from lead singer Bulmer's desire to be a part of a club or team at school. Her original idea for the band name was the more concise 'Pony Club', which she describes as 'quirky and kinky and fun'. A pre-existing Irish band had already claimed the name, and the prefix 'New Young' was added to reflect that the band are 'a newer, younger and kinkier Pony Club'. So now we know.

The Pier Head in Liverpool has gone through some transformations over the years. When back in the mid 1980's when I worked in the city centre it was part bus station and ferry terminal. The latter are mostly now for tourists, most locals taking the subway. Its now got a nice water feature and the concrete beefeater is now a swish Chinese eatery. A change for the better. On a sunny day, a nice place to enjoy an ice cream.....

Portree (Scottish Gaelic: Port Rìgh, is the largest town on Skye in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. It is the location for the only secondary school on the Island, Portree High school. Public transport services are limited to buses.
Portree has a harbour, fringed by cliffs as can be seen here, with a pier designed by Thomas Telford Attractions in the town include the Àros centre which celebrate the island's Gaelic heritage. The town also serves as a centre for tourists exploring the island.
The Royal Hotel is the site of MacNab's Inn, the last meeting place of Flora MacDonald and Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1746.
The town plays host to the Isle of Skye's shinty club, Skye Camanachd. They play at Pairc nan Laoch above the town on the road to Struan.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEMXA7 - Interior view of St Marys Church Linton, Forest of Dean Micheldean, Gloucester, Glos, England, UK. Shows sandstone stonework.
Linton is a small village in Herefordshire, England, around 5 kilometres (3 mi) east of Ross-on-Wye.
It has a church called St. Mary's, which dates from the 13th century. The spire can be seen when travelling eastwards on the M50 motorway when 2 miles east of junction 4. There is also a village hall, and a post office which opens a few hours each week.
Several activities take place in the village hall: brownies, pilates etc.
Each year, the only pub in the village hosts a charitable event
The festival is organised by a committee responsible for the creation of funds for an increasing number of local charities and good causes. The Landlords of The Alma Inn run the beer tents, providing a range of local and more exotic ales each year. The Alma provides a natural amphitheatre that is the garden to the rear of the pub which is an intimate environment for the notable Blues acts the committee books each year.
