Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X2CG3J - This image shows a striking illuminated neon sign displaying the words Come and Worship, rendered in bright blue neon tubing and framed by a contrasting green neon border. The sign is located on Oldham Street in Manchester city centre, an area strongly associated with nightlife, independent music venues, bars, and alternative culture within the Northern Quarter.
The message presents a deliberate and thought-provoking contrast between religious language and its urban surroundings. Oldham Street is better known for live music, late-night venues, record shops, and street culture than overt expressions of faith, making the presence of a Christian worship message visually and culturally arresting. The glowing neon typography echoes commercial signage styles more commonly associated with entertainment or retail, blending religious invitation with the visual language of the night-time city.
Photographed at night, the sign's illumination stands out sharply against a dark background, emphasising the clarity of the text and the symbolic impact of faith displayed openly in a secular urban environment. The image reflects wider themes in contemporary British cities, including the coexistence of belief systems, the visibility of religion in public spaces, and the use of modern visual forms to communicate traditional spiritual messages.
This photograph has strong editorial relevance for themes of religion, belief, spirituality, urban culture, modern Britain, social commentary, and the interaction between faith and nightlife in city centres.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1NRJP - In January 2023, government asked Greater Manchester for additional evidence to support our case for a?non-charging?Clean Air Plan.
We have submitted some of the evidence requested and will submit further evidence, which requires detailed modelling, at the end of June 2023.
Our investment-led, non-charging Clean Air Plan aims to tackle air pollution in a way that protects jobs, livelihoods and businesses.
Greater Manchester leaders believe that this is possible without the need for a charging Clean Air Zone.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JP9HTJ - The Whispering Knights is a 'portal dolmen' burial chamber that consists of four upright stones and a large fallen capstone. The so-called ?portal' facade is formed by three stones that look like a giant doorway facing down the hill and it was probably intended to be seen from that side. Originally there were two or three more uprights to support the capstone which would have been placed on top, possibly at a rakish angle, to form a table-like 'dolmen' structure. At one time it was believed to be part of a long barrow, but excavations in the 1980s suggested that it is more likely to have been free-standing and intended to impress. The very large pillar-like stone on the left of the portal is the largest of all the Rollright Stones, and with the capstone in place on top (as it was until the 18th century) the chamber would have been even more striking. It is estimated that using rollers, levers and sledges it may have taken over 60 people to move and erect the stones. It is thought that there would have been a low platform of small stones round the sides and back.
By analogy with other such monuments, the Whispering Knights was probably one the earliest funerary monuments in Britain, perhaps built around 3,800 BC and the c.2m square chamber would have contained the disarticulated bones of several individuals. Early Neolithic, Beaker and early Bronze Age pottery found in the immediate vicinity suggests that the tomb was venerated over many centuries and a piece of human bone washed out from the chamber was radiocarbon dated to c.1700BC.
The monument got its name as part of the legend about the king and his army who were outwitted by a witch and turned to stone: because of the conspiratorial way in which the portal stones lean towards each other, the stones are said to be the treacherous knights conniving against the king, though others think they are praying. Intriguingly, although it looks as if the central slab of the portal should be supporting the pillars

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A4PJMR - Get ready for Brexit' advertising campaign launches
An information campaign urging the public to get ready for Brexit has been launched by the government.
The campaign began on Sunday with the launch of a website, gov.uk/brexit.
Billboards and social media adverts will appear in the coming days and TV adverts will air later this month.
Michael Gove, who is in charge of no-deal plans, said the adverts encourage shared responsibility for preparing to leave the EU on 31 October.
It has been reported that the campaign could cost as much as ?100m as ministers seek to inform people what they might need to do, if anything, ahead of the deadline.
Meanwhile, it has emerged the EU is considering classifying no deal as a major disaster, like an earthquake, in order to free up funds for countries affected.
Benedict Pringle, author of the politicaladvertising.co.uk blog, said that, if true, the ?100m budget would be roughly double what the National Lottery spends on advertising each year.
So if you think about how often you see a lottery advert and double it, that's how much we could be seeing the campaign over the next two months, he told the BBC.
At football grounds, in advert breaks for Coronation Street and The Great British Bake Off, this is where you'll get the biggest reach with the public.
Media captionMichael Gove: 'Everyone will have the food they need'
What does the campaign involve?
An image showing one of the campaign's billboards was issued by the Cabinet Office ahead of their rollout this week.
Leaflets, online seminars, and information stands at events will also be used.
British citizens who are intending to travel to Europe and businesses which export to the EU are among the specific groups targeted by the campaign.
The campaign encourages people and businesses to visit the government website to answer questions and receive advice on preparing for Brexit.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M84J72 - Saoradh
Saoradh are a Revolutionary Republican Party, organised across Ireland. Founded on the 24th September 2016 following a significant collective of Irish Republican activists, who for a number of years acted autonomously, after a number of years of debate, consultation and organisation, constituted and launched a Revolutionary Irish Republican Party.
Saoradh seek the establishment of a 32 County Socialist Republic free from British rule.
Saoradh aim to build campaigns to fight back against imperialism and capitalism to empower the Irish people in the ongoing struggle to regain our national sovereignty, end partition and build a new fair society.
Saoradh believes that Ireland should be governed by the Irish People with the wealth and wealth producing mechanisms in the ownership of the Irish people. This can not happen while British imperialism undemocratically retains control of Irish destinies and partitions our nation. This cannot happen while a neo-colonial elite in a subservient supposed indigenous administration sells the nations labour and natural resources to international capital.
Saoradh does not believe that British imperialism or capitalist exploitation can be confronted in the structures they have created to consolidate their undemocratic control of the Irish nation. As such Saoradh believe any assembly claiming to speak for the Irish people without being elected by the united people of the Irish nation to be illegal.
Saoradh will seek to organise and work with the Irish people rather than be consumed and usurped by the structures of Ireland's enemies, standing on a long and proud revolutionary Irish Republican history of resistance
inspired by the actions and words of Tone of Connolly, of Mellows, of Costello and of Sands .

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY3KNR - The Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity, otherwise called Carlisle Cathedral, is the seat of the Anglican Bishop of Carlisle. It is located in Carlisle, in Cumbria, North West England. It was founded as an Augustinian priory and became a cathedral in 1133.
Carlisle, because of heavy losses to its fabric, is the second smallest (after Oxford), of England's ancient cathedrals. Its notable features include some fine figurative stone carving, a set of medieval choir stalls and the largest window in the Flowing Decorated Gothic style in England

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY3KP6 - Francis Close (11 July 1797 ? 18 December 1882) was the Anglican rector of Cheltenham (1826?1856) and Dean of Carlisle (1856?1881).
Close was born on 11 July 1797 in Frome, Somerset, the youngest son of the Rev. Henry Jackson Close, who was at one time Rector of Bentworth, near Alton, in Hampshire. Enrolling at St. John's College, Cambridge in 1816 he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1820, and was elevated to MA in 1825. During the same time period, he was ordained a deacon in 1820, and as a priest the following year. In 1822 he was assigned as curate of Willesden and Kingsbury in the London area. Two years later, in 1824, he was assigned to Cheltenham and the parish church of St Mary's, and when the rector died in 1826, he was elevated to that office.
Close served as rector for thirty years, where he was a popular preacher and a noted evangelical. He was a vociferous opponent of the Oxford Movement. He advocated for the creation of a training college for schoolteachers and opposed alcohol, tobacco, horse racing and theatrical amusements. He was involved in the provision of new churches in Cheltenham. On 24 November 1856, he was nominated to be Dean of Carlisle Cathedral by the Prime Minister, Lord Palmerston, and the appointment was approved by the Queen. That same year, the Archbishop of Canterbury conferred a Lambeth Doctorate of Divinity upon Close. He remained as Dean of Carlisle until 1881, when failing health forced him to resign. At the time of his resignation, he was the oldest of all deans in the Church of England He died in Penzance the following year, on 12 December 1882, and was buried in Carlisle Cathedral

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY3KPA - Old Town Hall History and Information
A prominent two storey Grade I Listed Building of Medieval origin, the Old Town Hall mostly dates from the 17th and 18th centuries.
1345 is the earliest reference to the predecessor of the building, variously termed the ?Toll booth', 'Common Hall' and ?Motehall' or ?Moot Hall' in later medieval sources. In 1668 the medieval hall was demolished to make way for a new one on the same site. It is this building, finished in 1669, with numerous subsequent alterations and extensions which survives today.
Over the years, the ground floor of the building has consistently remained in commercial and retail use whilst the grander public rooms at first floor level have accommodated a number of important civic functions including, most notably the Courts of Assize until 1881, the City's Magistrates Court until 1941, and Council Chamber and offices of the City of Carlisle Corporation until 1964.
The first floor accommodates the Tourist Information Centre and Assembly Room.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYF19 - Eastgate and Eastgate Clock in Chester, Cheshire, England, stand on the site of the original entrance to the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix. It is a prominent landmark in the city of Chester and is said to be the most photographed clock in England after Big Ben.
The original gate was guarded by a timber tower which was replaced by a stone tower in the 2nd century, and this in turn was replaced probably in the 14th century. The present gateway dates from 1768 and is a three-arched sandstone structure which carries the walkway forming part of Chester city walls. In 1899 a clock was added to the top of the gateway to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria two years earlier. It is carried on openwork iron pylons, has a clock face on all four sides, and a copper ogee cupola. The clock was designed by the Chester architect John Douglas. The whole structure, gateway and clock, was listed by English Heritage on 28 July 1955 as a Grade I listed building

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEEF91 - Sandy Row is a street in south Belfast, Northern Ireland. It lends its name to the surrounding residential community, which is predominantly Protestant working-class. The Sandy Row area had a population of 2,153 in 2001. It is a staunchly loyalist area of Belfast, being a traditional heartland for affiliation with the paramilitary Ulster Defence Association (UDA) and the Orange Order.
Sandy Row is situated in south Belfast, beginning at the edge of the city centre, close to the Europa Hotel. The road runs south from the Boyne Bridge (formerly the Saltwater Bridge) over the old Dublin railway line beside Great Victoria Street station, then crosses the Donegall Road and ends at the bottom of the Lisburn Road. At the north end of the road was the famous Murray's tobacco factory, which was first opened in 1810, while at the other is a large Orange hall.

New Young Pony Club are a five-piece rock band from London, UK. They consist of now London-based vocalist Tahita Bulmer and producer Andy Spence. They shared a love of punk rock and dance music. The founding pair began writing together, originally only for Bulmer to perform.
Spence later assumed a larger role when they decided to form a proper band, so the duo recruited the single-monikered Lou on keyboards, Igor Volk on bass, and Sarah Jones on percussion. The band formed in 2005, and released two limited edition 7' singles ('The Get Go' and this track 'Ice Cream') on indie label Tirk Recordings. Later that year they were discovered by more established Australian label Modular Recordings, and signing a worldwide deal.
The band's name came from lead singer Bulmer's desire to be a part of a club or team at school. Her original idea for the band name was the more concise 'Pony Club', which she describes as 'quirky and kinky and fun'. A pre-existing Irish band had already claimed the name, and the prefix 'New Young' was added to reflect that the band are 'a newer, younger and kinkier Pony Club'. So now we know.

The Pier Head in Liverpool has gone through some transformations over the years. When back in the mid 1980's when I worked in the city centre it was part bus station and ferry terminal. The latter are mostly now for tourists, most locals taking the subway. Its now got a nice water feature and the concrete beefeater is now a swish Chinese eatery. A change for the better. On a sunny day, a nice place to enjoy an ice cream.....

Cast are an English rock band from Liverpool, formed in 1992 by John Power (vocals, guitar) and Peter Wilkinson (backing vocals, bass) after Power left The La's and Wilkinson's former band Shack had split. Following early line-ups with different guitarists and drummers, Liam 'Skin' Tyson (guitar) and Keith O'Neill (drums) joined Cast in 1993.
Emerging from the Britpop movement of the mid-1990s, Cast signed to Polydor Records and their debut album All Change (1995) became the highest selling album for the label. Further commercial success continued with the albums Mother Nature Calls (1997) and Magic Hour (1999), however the band's fourth album Beetroot (2001) was far less successful which led to the band's split soon after.
Cast are set to reunite for a UK tour in November 2010, although I haven't got a ticket yet. The last time I saw them was at a V festival in warrington on a bill with Pulp and the excellent Elastica.
The 1995 album 'All Change' is probably the one to track down if you fancy hearing some more of this stuff.

Melrose Abbey is a Gothic-style abbey in Melrose, Scotland. It was founded in 1136 by Cistercian monks, on the request of King David I of Scotland. It was headed by the Abbot or Commendator of Melrose. Today the abbey is maintained by Historic Scotland (open all year
entrance charge). The ruins of Melrose are widely considered among the most beautiful of religious houses in the United Kingdom, being especially notable for a wealth of well-preserved figure-sculpture, and its architecture is considered to be some of the finest in Scotland.
The east end of the abbey was completed in 1146. Other buildings in the complex were added over the next 50 years. The abbey was built in the form of a St. John's cross. A considerable portion of the abbey is now in ruins, though a structure dating from 1590 is maintained as a museum open to the public.
Alexander II and other Scottish kings and nobles are buried at the abbey. The embalmed heart of Robert the Bruce is also said to rest on the abbey's grounds, while the rest of his body is buried in Dunfermline Abbey. In 1812, a stone coffin that some speculated was that of Michael Scot the philosopher and 'wizard', was found in an aisle in the abbey's south chancel.

There is a cake/desert called a 'Lamington'. Lamingtons are named after Charles Cochrane-Baillie, 2nd Baron Lamington, who served as Governor of Queensland from 1896 to 1901. According to legend Lamingtons were first served in Toowoomba when Lord Lamington took his entourage to Harlaxton House to escape the steamy heat of Brisbane. Lord Lamington was believed to have hated the dessert that had been named in his honour, referring to them as 'those bloody poofy woolly biscuits'.

Linton is a small village in Herefordshire, England, around 5 kilometres (3 mi) east of Ross-on-Wye.
It has a church called St. Mary's, which dates from the 13th century. The spire can be seen when travelling eastwards on the M50 motorway when 2 miles east of junction 4. There is also a village hall, and a post office which opens a few hours each week.
Several activities take place in the village hall: brownies, pilates etc.
Each year, the only pub in the village hosts a charitable event
The festival is organised by a committee responsible for the creation of funds for an increasing number of local charities and good causes. The Landlords of The Alma Inn run the beer tents, providing a range of local and more exotic ales each year. The Alma provides a natural amphitheatre that is the garden to the rear of the pub which is an intimate environment for the notable Blues acts the committee books each year.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYHH9 - City of Chester, NW England UK taken at dusk.
Chester is a city in Cheshire, England. Lying on the River Dee, close to the border with Wales, it is home to 120,622 inhabitants, and is the largest and most populous settlement of the wider unitary authority area of Cheshire West and Chester, which had a population of 328,100 according to the 2001 Census. Chester was granted city status in 1541.
Chester was founded as a castrum or Roman fort with the name Deva Victrix in the year 79 by the Roman Legio II Adiutrix during the reign of the Emperor Vespasian. Chester's four main roads, Eastgate, Northgate, Watergate and Bridge, follow routes laid out at this time ? almost 2,000 years ago. One of the three main Roman army bases, Deva later became a major settlement in the Roman province of Britannia. After the Romans left in the 5th century, the Saxons fortified the town against the Danes and gave Chester its name.
Chester was one of the last towns in England to fall to the Normans in the Norman conquest of England. William the Conqueror ordered the construction of a castle, to dominate the town and the nearby Welsh border. In 1071 he made Hugh d'Avranches the first Earl of Chester.
Chester has a number of medieval buildings, but some of the black-and-white buildings within the city centre are actually Victorian restorations. Chester is one of the best preserved walled cities in Britain. Apart from a 100-metre (330 ft) section, the listed Grade I walls are almost complete.
The Industrial Revolution brought railways, canals, and new roads to the city, which saw substantial expansion and development ? Chester Town Hall and the Grosvenor Museum are examples of Victorian architecture from this period.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P2X7YP - The Borders Railway connects the city of Edinburgh with Galashiels and Tweedbank in the Scottish Borders. The railway follows most of the alignment of the northern part of the Waverley Route, a former double-track line in southern Scotland and northern England that ran between Edinburgh and Carlisle. That line was controversially closed in 1969, as part of the Beeching cuts, leaving the Borders region without any access to the National Rail network. Following the closure, a campaign to revive the Waverley Route emerged. Discussion on reopening the northern part of the line came to a head during the early 2000s. Following deliberations in the Scottish Parliament, the Waverley Railway (Scotland) Act 2006 received Royal Assent in June 2006. The project was renamed the Borders Railway in August 2008, and building works began in November 2012. Passenger service on the line began on 6 September 2015, whilst an official opening by Queen Elizabeth II took place on 9 September.
The railway was rebuilt as a non-electrified, largely single-track line. Several surviving Waverley Route structures, including viaducts and tunnels, were rehabilitated and reused for the reopened railway. Passenger services run half-hourly on weekdays until 20:00, and hourly until 23:54 and on Sundays. The timetable also allows charter train promoters to run special excursion services, and for the weeks following the line opening scheduled steam trains were run.

Northern Ireland Protocol - agreed with the European Union (EU) in 2019 - has been a source of tension since it came into force at the start of 2021.
Special trading arrangements were needed for Northern Ireland after the UK voted for Brexit in 2016. This is because it's the only part of the UK with a land border with an EU country - the Republic of Ireland.
Before Brexit, it was easy to transport goods across this border because both sides had the same EU trade rules. No checks or paperwork were necessary.
After Brexit, a new system was needed because the EU has strict food rules and requires border checks when certain goods - such as milk and eggs - arrive from non-EU countries.
UK and the EU agreed that protecting the 1998 Northern Ireland peace deal - the Good Friday Agreement - was an absolute priority. So, both sides signed the Northern Ireland Protocol as part of the Brexit withdrawal agreement, which is now part of international law.
Foreign Secretary Liz Truss says the Protocol has caused problems which had not been expected when the agreement was signed.
The government now wants to ditch parts of the deal.
It wants to create red lanes and green lanes for goods imported from Britain into Northern Ireland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P2X7YN - The Borders Railway connects the city of Edinburgh with Galashiels and Tweedbank in the Scottish Borders.
