Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3C4CXN4 - A gigantic mechanical bull rages over unsuspecting passengers at Birmingham's central station. In 2022, Birmingham hosted the quadrennial Commonwealth Games, introducing a massive mechanical bull during the opening ceremony. Standing 33 feet tall and weighing 2.5 tonnes, the gargantuan creature amazed many viewers before seemingly fading into oblivion.
That is, until he made a triumphant return to Birmingham in July 2023. Though the bull was to be dismantled after the games, people on social media campaigned for its preservation, helping it find a new permanent home in the city.
The raging bull was officially given the name of Ozzy, after none other than the former lead singer of Black Sabbath, who grew up in Birmingham. Unveiled by Ozzy Osbourne's wife Sharon and sister Jean, Ozzy the Bull stands towering above passengers at Birmingham New Street Station, a new beloved icon of the city.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T20EG8 - Coprinus comatus, commonly known as the shaggy ink cap, lawyer's wig, or shaggy mane, is a common fungus often seen growing on lawns, along gravel roads and waste areas. The young fruit bodies first appear as white cylinders emerging from the ground, then the bell-shaped caps open out. The caps are white, and covered with scales?this is the origin of the common names of the fungus. The gills beneath the cap are white, then pink, then turn black and deliquesce ('melt') into a black liquid filled with spores (hence the ink cap name).[2] This mushroom is unusual because it will turn black and dissolve itself in a matter of hours after being picked or depositing spores.
When young it is an excellent edible mushroom provided that it is eaten soon after being collected (it keeps very badly because of the autodigestion of its gills and cap). If long-term storage is desired, microwaving, sauteing or simmering until limp will allow the mushrooms to be stored in a refrigerator for several days or frozen. Also, placing the mushrooms in a glass of ice water will delay the decomposition for a day or two so that one has time to incorporate them into a meal. Processing or icing must be done whether for eating or storage within four to six hours of harvest to prevent undesirable changes to the mushroom. The species is cultivated in China as food.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP38P - The White Bear public house, located on Canute Place in Knutsford, Cheshire, is shown here in daylight with its distinctive black-and-white half-timbered facade and thatched roof. The building is a long-established local landmark in this historic Cheshire market town, reflecting traditional English inn architecture and pub culture.
Flower baskets and planted borders add seasonal colour to the frontage, reinforcing the pub's role as a welcoming focal point within the town centre. Knutsford is well known for its historic streetscape, independent businesses, and proximity to rural Cheshire countryside, and the White Bear remains a recognisable symbol of British hospitality and heritage pub design.
This image is suitable for editorial use covering UK pubs, traditional architecture, market towns, tourism, food and drink culture, and historic buildings in England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K546YG - Wolverhampton railway station in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, England is on the Birmingham Loop of the West Coast Main Line. It is served by Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, Transport for Wales and West Midlands Trains services, and was historically known as Wolverhampton High Level.
History
The first station named Wolverhampton had opened on the edge of the town centre in 1837 on the Grand Junction Railway, this station was renamed Wednesfield Heath in 1855, shortly after the present station was opened, and then was closed in 1873.
On 12 November 1849, the Shrewsbury and Birmingham Railway opened a temporary terminus to its line, at a location very close to the present station.
The present station was opened on 1 July 1852 by the Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Stour Valley Railway, a subsidiary of the London and North Western Railway (LNWR)
it was named Wolverhampton Queen Street. The only visible remnant of the original station is the Queen's Building, the gateway to Railway Drive which was the approach road to the station. The building was originally the carriage entrance to the station and was completed three years before the main station building. Today, it forms part of Wolverhampton bus station.
Two years later, on 1 July 1854, the Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway (OWWR) opened a second station, located behind the older station on lower ground, which became known as the Wolverhampton Low Level station from April 1856, the other becoming known as Wolverhampton High Level from 1 June 1885
The station was remodelled after 2020

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PM62KD - Black Mountain is a large hill which overlooks the city of Belfast, Northern Ireland. With a height of 1,275 ft (389 m), it towers over most of west Belfast and is part of the Belfast Hills. Its name is probably derived from the adjoining mountain called Divis (from Irish Dubhais 'black ridge'), and they may have been seen as one mountain in the past. Black Mountain transmitting station is on the summit.
Black Mountain is composed of basalt with limestone underneath, as is Cavehill further north. There have been flint finds in the area, which also contains raths, deserted farms and overgrown paths joining the fields and homesteads and trails scattered over the mountain.
For many years people have lobbied for the preservation of the Belfast Hills, hoping to bring an end to many years of quarrying. The quarry is steep and deeply excavated and the basalt from it is used mostly for road stone. The hill is under National Trust guardianship

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GGWH7J - A fingerpost (sometimes referred to as a guide post) is a traditional type of sign post primarily used in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, consisting of a post with one or more arms, known as fingers, pointing in the direction of travel to places named on the fingers. The posts have traditionally been made from cast iron or wood, with poles painted in black, white or grey and fingers with black letters on a white background, often including distance information in miles. In most cases, they are used to give guidance for road users, but examples also exist on the canal network, for instance. They are also used to mark the beginning of a footpath, bridleway, or similar public path.
Legislation was enacted in England in 1697 which enabled magistrates to place direction posts at cross-highways. However, the oldest fingerpost still extant is thought to be that close to Chipping Campden in Gloucestershire, dated 1669 and pointing to Oxford, Warwick, Gloucester and Worcester (abbreviated to 'Gloster' and 'Woster'). The Highways Act 1766 and Turnpike Roads Act 1773 made use of fingerposts on turnpike roads compulsory.
The Motor Car Act 1903 passed road sign responsibilities to the relevant highway authority within the then United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, although no specifications were set. Guidance was given in a 1921 circular that road direction signs should have 2 1?2-or-3-inch-high (64 or 76 mm) upper case lettering on a white background and white supporting poles. It also recommended that the name of the highway authority be included somewhere in the design.
Mandatory standards (The Traffic Signs (Size, Colour and Type) Provisional Regulations) were passed for Great Britain in 1933 which required poles to painted with black and white bands and lettering to be of a different typeface. Signposts were removed across much of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland during World War II, lest enemy forces use them for navigation

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EDR5R5 - Postage stamps and postal history of Australia
The six self-governing Australian colonies that formed the Commonwealth of Australia on 1 January 1901 operated their own postal service and issued their own stamps ? see articles on the systems on New South Wales (first stamps issued 1850), Victoria (1850), Tasmania (1853), Western Australia (1854), South Australia (1855) and Queensland (1860). Under section 51(v) of the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution 1900, postal, telegraphic, telephonic, and other like services became a Commonwealth responsibility.
The Commonwealth's Postmaster-General's Department became effective on 1 March 1901 (this agency would be disaggregated on 1 July 1975 in part into the Australian Postal Commission trading as Australia Post). All then-current colony stamps which continued on sale became de facto Commonwealth stamps. Some of these stamps continued to be used for some time following the introduction in 1913 of the Commonwealth's uniform postage stamp series. These stamps continued to be valid for postage until 14 February 1966 when the introduction of decimal currency made all stamps bearing the earlier currency invalid for use.
There have been many special issues. The first Christmas stamp appeared on 6 November 1957. In recent years, designs for the Christmas issue have alternated each year between the religious and the secular. From 1993, in October of every year, Australia Post has commemorated Stamp Collecting month with special issues, typically featuring topics that are of interest to children such as pets, native fauna and space. Commencing with the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, during the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, stamps featuring Australians who have won an Olympic gold medal are issued on the next postal business day after the achievement.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED4KYM - Around ten Walsall College students and apprentices will be offered the unique chance to put their stamp on the new Walsall Business and Sports Hub (WBSH) scheme. It follows an agreement made between the College and Interserve Construction (part of the international support services and construction group Interserve), which is leading on the development. There is also an opportunity for at least 20 students to get involved in work placements in the wider Interserve operation including business administration and project-based work experience.
Students will start their placements with Interserve by January and they will see both traditional and modern construction techniques whilst working closely alongside project and support staff as well as learning valuable employability skills.
Construction work, which started at the end of August, remains on schedule ahead of the official opening in September 2015. Heavy goods vehicles are expected to make the first delivery of steelwork this week as the new build begins to take shape.
The state-of-the-art development, adjacent to Walsall College's main ?64 million Wisemore Campus on Littleton Street West, will include a business incubation centre for start-up businesses, sports hall with badminton courts to Sport England standards, dance and fitness studios, sports training and injury clinic and a fine dining restaurant. It forms part of Walsall Council's long-term ?400 million Gigaport initiative, which is creating business and office development along the ring road corridor.

The cathedral is dedicated to St Chad and Saint Mary. Its internal length is 113 metres (370 feet), and the breadth of the nave is 21m (68'). The central spire is 77m (252') high and the western spires are about 58m (190').
The stone is sandstone and came from a quarry on the south side of Lichfield. The walls of the nave lean outwards slightly, due to the weight of stone used in the ceiling vaulting
some 200?300 tons of which was removed during renovation work to prevent the walls leaning further.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64TPW - The Victorian Arcade, in Walsall, West Midlands, is a shopping arcade in the town centre, built in the 1890s. It is a Grade II listed building
The site, formerly the Shambles, a meat market dating from the medieval period, was redeveloped as a shopping arcade in 1895?7. The architect was Jonathon Ellis. Originally named Digbeth Arcade, it has been restored in recent years, and renamed Victorian Arcade. The T shaped plan is unchanged from the original design.
Inside the arcade there are entrances on Bradford Street on the north-west, Digbeth Street on the north-east and Lower Hall Lane on the south-east. The frontage on Bradford Street has a first-floor balcony of five bays: there are iron ballustrades, with shops and office chambers behind. There are timber oriel windows on the floor above. There was originally a five-bay upper floor on the Digbeth Street frontage, replaced during the 20th century.
Inside, the arms of the arcade have a barrel-vaulted glass roof
they meet at an octagonal space under a glazed dome. Some of the shop fronts in the arcade are original

Innovative Midlands housing provider whg will make a bold design statement of dated Austin House while cutting residents' fuel bills and carbon footprint. Carbon savings for the project over 25 years are estimated at 2,340 tonnes while customers can expect to save around a third on energy bills.
The leading landlord is working in partnership with British Gas on the landmark project, which is part funded by the national Community Energy Savings Programme (CESP). A series of internal and external work will take place as part of the radical retrofit.
Chameleon boards that change colour depending on the time of day, view point and exposure to sunlight will be fitted down two aspects of the high rise block, which looms large on a hill in the Butts. As well as introducing colour and interest to the building, the boards will provide 406 square metres of insulation.
248 photo voltaic panels will be fixed to a south facing external wall to harness solar power and generate electricity for the communal lighting and lifts. Heat will be extracted from the ground and pumped into Austin House to power a new heating and hot water system. This will replace the inefficient electric storage heaters to give residents more control over the temperature of their flat and the water they use.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNM1 - These images show a historic sundial sculpture depicting a Moor figure at Dunham Massey, near Altrincham in Greater Manchester (postcode WA14 4SJ). The sculpture forms part of the estate's historic garden landscape and is accompanied by an interpretive plaque explaining its origins and symbolism.
According to the plaque, the sundial is in the style of one commissioned during the reign of King William III and represents Africa as one of the four continents recognised in European thought at the time. The figure is described as a Moor rather than an enslaved person and is believed to have been positioned at the site since before 1750.
Such figures, often referred to historically as Blackamoor sculptures, were common decorative elements in European gardens and interiors during the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, they are understood within a broader historical and cultural context, prompting discussion about representation, colonial perspectives, and the values embedded in historic art and landscape design.
The sculpture is shown holding a metal sundial aloft, set against the backdrop of the red-brick mansion and formal grounds of Dunham Massey. The inclusion of the explanatory plaque reflects the National Trust's approach to interpreting historic objects transparently and responsibly.
Photographed in daylight, these images are well suited to editorial use covering historic estates, garden sculpture, heritage interpretation, National Trust properties, art history, and contemporary engagement with complex historical narratives.

The old style greasy spoon and working mans cafe is under threat. As our town centres and working (wo)men are being decimated, this old institution is disapearing.
Classic formica tables, breakfast for £2, posters to take you to far away places while you mop up your beans with a potato cake. Priceless!
The typical greasy spoon serves mainly fried or grilled food from a more or less invariable repertoire: bacon, sausages, fried eggs, fried or tinned tomatoes, fried mushrooms, baked beans, chips, and sometimes black or white pudding, bubble and squeak (a fried mixture of cabbage and mashed potato), and fried bread.
These are served in a variety of combinations and usually it is possibly to order any combination. This part of the menu is generally referred to as breakfast even if it is available all day. Real greasy spoons do not have a continental coffee machine capable of capuchino, so dont embarass yourself by asking. Expect coffee to be instant, teabags rule here.
Who knows, the less than rigourous attitude to hygiene and dishwashing may well one day be proved to be good for us. Well its natural to be exposed to a few germs n'est pas?

Mr Brownstone is a track from the album 'Appetite for Destruction' from 1987. Legend has it that Slash &
Izzy Stradlin wrote the song after lamenting their heroin habits. The line 'I used to do a little, but a little wouldn't do, so the little got more and more. I just keep trying to get a little better, said a little better than before' encapsulates it all.
Mr Brownstone was GnR's first UK double A-side single, but was not released anywhere else in that form. The band was from Hollywood, Los Angeles, California originating in 1985. Led by frontman and co-founder Axl Rose (born William Bruce Rose, Jr.), the band has released six studio albums so far &
an official live album while going through numerous line-up changes. As of 2010, Rose is the only consistent member of Guns N' Roses.
The debut album, 'Appetite for Destruction', has sold in excess of 28 million copies worldwide and even if you hate rock or metal music, in my opinion you should still probably have a copy. There was a long gap between early work and the much hyped 'Chinese Democracy' album.
On March 26, 2008, 'Dr Pepper' announced a plan to give everyone in America – except the band's former guitarists Slash and Buckethead – a free can of Dr Pepper if the band released Chinese Democracy before the end of 2008. Rose added, 'As some of Buckethead's performances are on our album, I'll share my Dr Pepper with him.'
With the announcement from Guns N' Roses regarding a release date in November, Tony Jacobs, Dr Pepper's Vice President of Marketing for Dr. Pepper, announced a free soda coupon campaign for 24 hours on Sunday, November 23, 2008. Due to 'heavy volume' on the server throughout the entire day it was impossible to submit for your free coupon. I cannot say I was gutted, I would rather drink 'Venos' than Dr Pepper myself!

Castlerigg Stone Circle (alt. Keswick Carles, Carles, Carsles or Castle-rig) near Keswick in England is one of the most visually impressive prehistoric monuments in Britain and is the most visited stone circle in Cumbria, England UK.
Every year, thousands of people make the short journey from Keswick to the plateau of Castlerigg Fell and to Chestnut Hill, on which the monument stands. This plateau forms the raised centre of a natural amphitheatre created by the surrounding fells and from within the circle it is possible to see some of the highest peaks in Cumbria: Helvellyn, Skiddaw, Grasmoor and Blencathra.
The stones are of a local metamorphic slate, set in a flattened circle, measuring 32.6 m (107 ft) at its widest and 29.5 m (97 ft) at its narrowest. The heaviest stone has been estimated to weigh around 16 tons and the tallest stone measures approximately 2.3m high. There is a 3.3m wide gap in its northern edge, which may have been an entrance.
Within the circle, abutting its eastern quadrant, is a roughly rectangular setting of a further 10 stones. The circle was probably constructed around 3200 BC (Late Neolithic/Early Bronze-Age), making it one of the earliest stone circles in Britain and possibly in Europe. It is important to archaeoastronomers who have noted that the sunrise during the Autumn equinox appears over the top of Threlkeld Knott, a hill 3.5 km to the east. Some stones in the circle have been aligned with the midwinter sunrise and various lunar positions.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DHGYW0 - The ?jewel in the crown' of Walsall town is, perhaps, its famous Victorian park, The Arboretum, and the setting of that jewel is entered through the historic gateways of a fine old Victorian building ? the main Arboretum Lodge, with its distinctive clock tower.
Once home of the legendary Walsall Illuminations festival of lights enjoyed annually by millions since its inauguration in 1952, Walsall Arboretum itself has its origins in another much more ancient activity in the town ? limestone mining.
The area now occupied by the Arboretum was originally part of Rushall until 1876. Limestone had been quarried in the vicinity since at least the late 18th century, with the Persehouse family demolishing Reynolds Hall so that the very profitable quarrying could continue. However, operations had ceased by the 1840's, leaving two great pits to fill up with water, both from the nearby stream and from springs and general drainage. The larger of the two pits, now lakes, was named Hatherton Lake by 1845, and the fine old row of houses now known as Victoria Terrace just to the north was in fact built as Hatherton Lake Villas by the early 1850's.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DHGYW2 - A prominent tower block on the Walsall skyline is being stylishly transformed through design and technology to the tune of more than ?3million.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DHGYWM - The Metropolitan Borough of Walsall is a local government district in the West Midlands, England, with the status of a metropolitan borough. It is named after its largest settlement, Walsall, but covers a larger area which also includes the towns of Aldridge, Bloxwich, Brownhills, Darlaston and Willenhall. For Eurostat purposes Walsall and Wolverhampton is a NUTS 3 region (code UKG35) and is one of five boroughs or unitary districts that comprise the West Midlands NUTS 2 region. The borough had an estimated population of 254,500 in 2007.
The current boundaries were set as part of the provisions of the Local Government Act 1972, with a change to the north of the borough in 1994. It is bounded on the west by the City of Wolverhampton, the south by the Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell, to the south east by the City of Birmingham, and by the Staffordshire districts of Lichfield, Cannock Chase and South Staffordshire to the east, north and northwest respectively. Most of the borough is highly industrialised and densely populated, but areas around the north and east of the borough are open space.
In 1986 the borough became an effective unitary authority when the West Midlands County Council was abolished. However it remains part of the West Midlands for ceremonial purposes, and for functions such as policing, fire and public transport.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DHGYWH - In 1848, John Eglington, a local surveyor, valued the estate at ?160,000. In the 1860s, E. A. Foden first mooted the idea of turning the estate into a park and in 1871, the Walsall Arboretum and Lake Company was formed and issued a prospectus for shareholders describing the principal features.
In 1873, a lease was drawn up for the creating of a park and the flooding of more land. The Arboretum was officially opened on May 4, 1874 by Lady Hatherton. The park consisted of two lakes, two lodges, a boathouse, bandstand, several summerhouses, a tree lined promenade, space for dancing, a flagpole, croquet lawns and a cricket ground. On May 20, 1875, severe weather caused extensive damage to the lake area.
In 1965, exploration began for underground tunnels connecting the Littleton Street mine workings, however none were found. In 1967, proposals for a new roundabout and flyover scheme that would have demolished the Clock Tower and lodge were rejected due to public pressure. In 1972, a proposal by Featherstone-Dilke to construct housing on the northern edge of the park was rejected following a public enquiry. On April 19, 1989, 31.32ha of land consisting of the original Arboretum and surrounding housing was designated a conservation area.[1]
In 1995, a Charter Mark was awarded to the Arboretum for excellence and diversity in the services it offered. It was re-awarded in 1999 and in the same year, a rare species of white-clawed crayfish was discovered in Hatherton Lake

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F89PHY - The Industrial Revolution changed Walsall from a village of 2,000 people in the 16th century to a town of over 86,000 in approximately 200 years. The town manufactured a wide range of products including saddles, chains, buckles and plated ware. Nearby, limestone quarrying provided the town with much prosperity.
Walsall is usually remembered as the centre of an extensive leatherworking industry, but in reality there was much more. It used to be known as ?The town of a hundred trades', which included all kinds of metalworking, tube making, iron and brass founding, electrical engineering, car and motor scooter making, chain making, lock making, and much more.
Walsall became a wealthy Black Country town because of its many industries that flourished, thanks to the hard-working, and skilled labour force.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEMWPW - A picturesque view of traditional timber framed cottages lining Smithy Lane in the historic village of Great Budworth, Cheshire, England. The row of houses features classic black and white half timbering combined with warm red brickwork, steeply pitched tiled roofs and prominent chimney stacks, all characteristic of vernacular English architecture found in long-established rural settlements. The narrow cobbled lane curves gently through the scene, reinforcing the sense of age and continuity within the village landscape.
Great Budworth is widely regarded as one of Cheshire's best preserved villages, with many buildings dating back several centuries. Smithy Lane retains a strong historic character, shaped by local materials, skilled craftsmanship and incremental development rather than modern planning. The cottages sit close to the roadway, reflecting a period when villages were designed around walking, horses and agricultural life rather than motor traffic. Mature trees, garden planting and soft natural light add to the calm, lived-in quality of the scene.
The image conveys themes of rural tradition, heritage conservation and village life in England. It evokes a slower pace of living and a strong connection between architecture and place, where buildings reflect both social history and the practical needs of earlier rural communities. Such streetscapes are increasingly valued for their cultural significance and as symbols of the English countryside.
This photograph is well suited for editorial use covering rural England, historic villages, heritage architecture, conservation areas and countryside living, as well as commercial applications relating to tourism, travel, housing, heritage publications and representations of traditional English village life.
