Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNYF - This image shows an off-peak day return railway ticket and collection receipt laid over a printed York to Liverpool timetable, illustrating everyday UK rail travel and fare systems. The ticket details include journey validity, fare value, class of travel, and date, reflecting the complexity of British rail ticketing and pricing structures.
Printed timetables and paper tickets remain part of the passenger experience despite the growth of mobile and digital ticketing. The combination of timetable pages and ticket documentation highlights themes of public transport usage, travel planning, and intercity rail connections across northern England, including routes via Warrington.
The image is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to UK transport, rail policy, commuting, travel costs, public services, and mobility, as well as conceptual illustrations of journeys, schedules, and everyday travel administration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAJ31B - HMS Birkenhead, also referred to as HM Troopship Birkenhead or Steam Frigate Birkenhead, was one of the first iron-hulled ships built for the Royal Navy. She was designed as a steam frigate, but was converted to a troopship before being commissioned. She was wrecked on 26 February 1852, while transporting troops to Algoa Bay at Danger Point near Gansbaai, 87 miles (140 kilometres) from Cape Town in the Cape Colony. There were not enough serviceable lifeboats for all the passengers, and the soldiers famously stood firm on board, thereby allowing the women and children to board the boats safely and escape the sinking. Only 193 of the estimated 643 people on board survived, and the soldiers' chivalry gave rise to the unofficial women and children first protocol when abandoning ship, while the Birkenhead drill of Rudyard Kipling's poem came to describe courage in face of hopeless circumstances. This mural was painted in appalilng weather conditions in January 2020 by Liverpool artist, Paul Curtis. It is located on the side of Gallagher's Traditional Pub, located in Birkenhead, overlooking the River Mersey.

Motto: 'UBI FIDES IBI LUX ET ROBUR' - Where there is faith there is light and strength
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on August 28, 1878.
The borough of Birkenhead was founded in 1877 after the merger of Birkenhead, Claughton-cum-Grange, Oxton and Tranmere. The new borough received its arms on August 28, 1878, and the symbols in the new arms were taken from the seals of the former towns.
The crosier and the lion were taken from the old Birkenhead seal and represent the Benedictine monastery in Birkenhead. The monastery was founded by Hamon de Massey in 1150 and the lion is taken from the arms of the Massey family. The oak is taken from Tranmere. The two lions are taken from Oxton.
The meaning of the crescents is not known. The crest shows the lion and crosier again as well as an anchor symbolising that Birkenhead depends on sailing and shipping.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTA9J - Merseyrail is both a train operating company (TOC) and a commuter rail network in and around Liverpool City Region, England. It is a part of Serco-Abellio, and is formed of two electrified lines of the National Rail network known as the Northern Line and the Wirral Line which run underground in central Liverpool. A third line, separate from the electrified network, is named the City Line, which is a term used by the governing body Merseytravel referring to local services it sponsors on the Liverpool to Manchester Lines and Liverpool to Wigan Line operated by Northern.
The Merseyrail network has 68 stations and 75 miles of route, of which 6.5 miles are underground. Carrying approximately 110,000 passengers each weekday,[6] or 34 million passengers per year, it forms the most heavily used urban railway network in the UK outside London. The network is operated by a joint venture between franchise holder Serco and Abellio, who superseded Arriva Trains Merseyside in 2003. The contract is for 25 years expiring in 2028. Serco-Abellio operate a fleet of 59 trains and as of 2015, employ 1,200 people.
The large comprehensive urban network was formed in 1977 by merging separate rail lines by the construction of new tunnels under Liverpool city centre and Birkenhead. Although financial constraints have prevented some of the 1970s plans for the network being realised, the network has been extended, with additional extensions proposed.
The Merseyrail name became the official brand for the network in the days of British Rail, surviving several franchise holders, although the name was not used by Arriva when holding the franchise. Despite this, Merseytravel continued the Merseyrail branding at stations, allowing the name to be adopted colloquially. Merseyrail is referred to as Merseyrail Electrics by National Rail Enquiries, and as Serco/Abellio Merseyrail by Merseytravel.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXM1K - The area around the Pier Head and Albert Dock is iconic for tourists / travelers and even more beautiful by night or at dusk.
The Pier Head is a riverside location in the city centre of Liverpool, England. It is part of the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was inscribed in 2004.
The site encompasses a trio of landmarks, built on the site of the former George's Dock and referred to since at least 2000 as The Three Graces:
Royal Liver Building, built between 1908 and 1911 and designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas. It is a grade I listed building consisting of two clock towers, both crowned by mythical Liver Birds. The building is the headquarters of the Royal Liver Friendly Society.
Cunard Building, constructed between 1914 and 1916 and a grade II* listed building. It is the former headquarters of the Cunard Line shipping company.
Port of Liverpool Building, built from 1903 to 1907 and also grade II* listed. It is the former home of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board.
Also on the site is the grade II listed Mersey Tunnel building, to the east of the Port of Liverpool building. It was built in the 1930s and contains offices and ventilator equipment for the Queensway Tunnel.

Ten is the base of the decimal numeral system, by far the most common system of denoting numbers in both spoken and written language. The reason for the choice of ten is assumed to be that humans have ten fingers (digits).
Ten is a composite number, its proper divisors being 1, 2 and 5. Ten is the smallest noncototient, a number that cannot be expressed as the difference between any integer and the total number of coprimes below it.
Ten is the second discrete semiprime (2.5) and the second member of the (2.q) discrete semiprime family. Ten has an aliquot sum \u03c3(n) of 8 and is accordingly the first discrete semiprime to be in deficit. All subsequent discrete semiprimes are in deficit. The aliquot sequence for 10 comprises five members (10,8,7,1,0) with this number being the second composite member of the 7-aliquot tree.
It is the aliquot sum of only one number the discrete semiprime 14.
Ten is a semi-meandric number.
The Roman numeral for ten is X (which looks like two V's [the Roman numeral for 5] put together)
it is thought that the V for five is derived from an open hand (five digits displayed). Incidentally, the Chinese word numeral for ten, is a cross, too: \u5341.
There are said to be Ten Lost Tribes of Israel (those other than Judah and Benjamin). There are Ten Sephirot in the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. The Bible records 10 generations between Adam and Noah, and 10 generations between Noah and Abraham.

\u00bfWhats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
'First I want a kiss, then I want it all......'
Well its been a few weeks in arriving, but seminal Scousers Echo and the Bunnymen have finally arrived on my iPod.
Echo was the name given to the bands original drum machine (in legend, although maybe not in fact), that backed up Ian McCulloch (vox), Will Sergeant (guitar) and Les Pattinson (Bass). By 1980 a permanent drummer, Pete de Freitas was installed. He was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1989.
Ian McCulloch back in 1977 was one third of the 'Crucial Three', a bedroom band which also featured Julian Cope (Teardrop Explodes) and Pete Wylie (Wah Heat).
I have the first single (from Bill Drummond and David Balfe's Zoo label) 'The Pictures On My Wall' (b-sided with 'Read It In Books') with 'The Revenge Of Voodoo Billy' scratched in the run out groove, up in my loft. Its pretty much played to death. I think I bought it at 'Probe' the original record shop that was up in what is now known as Cavern walks in Liverpool. It stocked all the indie vinyl and sold tickets to Erics, the local punk band venue. Echo &
the Bunnymen made their debut at Liverpool's Eric's Club in November 1978.
The band were influenced by the same artists as their other North West contemporaries Joy Division, The Doors and Velvet underground. Like them, they often play Doors covers live.
For the ultimate resource on the band, checkout www.villiersterrace.com , to get a feel for the band, checkout the live album 'Never Stop: Live in Liverpool'.

The RAF Search and Rescue Force (SARF or SAR Force) is the Royal Air Force organization which provides around-the-clock aeronautical search and rescue cover in the United Kingdom, Cyprus and the Falkland Islands.
Although established with a primary role of military search and rescue, most of SARF's operational missions are spent in its secondary role, conducting civil search and rescue. This entails the rescue of civilians from the sea, on mountains, from flooded regions or other locations on land.
The aeronautical search and rescue roles are complemented by the related Royal Air Force Mountain Rescue Service whose trained mountaineers also conduct search and rescue in hilly terrain. SARF helicopters and RAF mountaineers often work together on mountain rescue incidents.
The SAR Force headquarters is situated at RAF Valley on Anglesey, North Wales and this helicopter is probably from 'C Flight' based there.

Birkenhead had the first street tramway in Europe. Opened on 29 August 1860 the first line ran from Woodside (adjoining the terminal of the Mersey Ferry) to Birkenhead Park. This early system was horse-drawn and was the brainchild of flamboyant American, George Francis Train. A preserved tram was on display in the Woodside ferry terminal booking hall.
The system was later electrified and operated from 1901 as Birkenhead Corporation Tramways. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HCN8 - Hadlow Road railway station was a station on the single track Hooton to West Kirby branch of the Birkenhead Railway, on the Wirral Peninsula, Cheshire, England.
The station served the village of Willaston. It may be presumed that it was named Hadlow Road to distinguish it from the pre-existing Cheshire station at the other Cheshire village of Willaston, and so named, on the GWR/LNWR joint line between Crewe and Nantwich.
Hadlow Road railway station closed to passengers on 17 September 1956. The track continued to be used for freight transportation and driver training for another six years, closing on 7 May 1962. The tracks were lifted two years later.
The route became the Wirral Way footpath and part of Wirral Country Park in 1973, which was the first such designated site in Britain. All of the station (excluding the westbound platform) has been preserved to give an authentic 1950s look and a short section of track has been relaid in front of the eastbound platform.
The station is designated by English Heritage as a Grade II listed building. It is one of two visitor centres on the Wirral Way, with the other at Thurstaston where the platforms remain in situ, but the station has not been restored.
