Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6ET - A blue directional road sign in Dundee, Scotland, indicating a route towards the Tay Bridge for walkers and cyclists. The sign features internationally recognised pedestrian and bicycle symbols, highlighting the bridge's role not only as a major road crossing but also as part of Dundee's wider active travel network.
The Tay Road Bridge spans the Firth of Tay, linking Dundee with Fife and forming one of the most important transport connections in eastern Scotland. While primarily designed for vehicular traffic, the bridge also provides segregated or designated routes for non-motorised users, making it a significant piece of infrastructure for commuters, leisure cyclists and long-distance walkers.
Such signage reflects broader policy priorities in Scotland and the UK aimed at encouraging walking and cycling as alternatives to car travel, supporting objectives around carbon reduction, public health and urban sustainability. Clear wayfinding signs are a key element of this approach, helping users navigate complex urban transport systems and promoting confidence in active travel routes.
Photographed in daylight against a clear sky, the image isolates the sign and its symbols, making it suitable for editorial use relating to transport planning, sustainable mobility, urban design and public infrastructure. The photograph documents how large-scale transport structures such as the Tay Bridge are increasingly framed within debates about inclusive access, environmental responsibility and the future of everyday urban movement.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP34A - A blue-painted National Cycle Network route sign located in Coleraine, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The distinctive cast-metal waymarker displays the route number National Cycle Network 93 and provides cycling distances to nearby destinations including Castlerock, Limavady, Portstewart, and Bushmills, reflecting Coleraine's position as a hub for cycle routes along the Causeway Coast region.
The sign forms part of Northern Ireland's cycling infrastructure, designed to support recreational cycling, commuting, and sustainable transport. Its traditional fingerpost-style design and durable painted metal construction are characteristic of National Cycle Network signage found throughout the UK and Ireland.
Photographed in natural daylight, the image documents everyday public transport infrastructure and wayfinding systems that encourage active travel and tourism. It highlights the growing emphasis on cycling networks, low-carbon transport, and accessible outdoor recreation within towns and rural areas across Northern Ireland. Visible Text :-

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCA2K2 - Barnsley British Co-operative Society (BBCS) was founded in August 1861 as a result of being heavily influenced by the philosophy of a founding member named George Adcroft. Adcroft had moved from Lancashire to work at the Oaks Colliery in Barnsley. He had previously been a member of the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers which was established in 1844. The Rochdale society was one of the first co-operatives to pay a dividend ?divi' to its members and many of its objectives around trading were used as a basis for new co-operatives across the country. The first store in Barnsley was opened in March 1862 at 16 Market Street and the first district store opened in Dodworth in 1863. By the end of the century the majority of outlying districts had a grocery branch and the society's principle for being self-sufficient meant that a number of production plants had opened, including a flour mill, bakery, abattoir and tin can factory. In 1950 the society opened its first self-service grocery store at New Lodge, which paved the way for a number of other store conversions over the next two decades. By the 1960s other departments of the society included butchery, restaurant, clothing, jewellery, optical, travel agency and decorating. However, by the early 1970s the society began to contract
it started to close smaller grocery stores which weren't profitable or suitable for self-service and in 1971 merged with another society, Co-operative Retail Services (CRS). The name ?Barnsley British Co-operative Society' subsequently disappeared from the high street

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WDXM - This image shows the north entrance of the Greenwich Foot Tunnel on the Isle of Dogs in East London. A cyclist is seen emerging from the red brick and stone entrance building, highlighting the tunnel's continued use as a key non-motorised crossing beneath the River Thames.
Opened in 1902, the Greenwich Foot Tunnel was constructed to provide free access for pedestrians between Greenwich and what is now the Canary Wharf area, supporting workers travelling to docks and industrial sites on both sides of the river. Today it remains an important route for commuters, residents, and visitors, particularly for walking and cycling, although cyclists are required to dismount within the tunnel itself.
The entrance building features characteristic Edwardian civic architecture, with solid brickwork, stone detailing, and recessed doorways that convey durability and public purpose. The scene is photographed in daylight, with trees and greenery visible nearby, situating the structure within its riverside urban setting.
This image is well suited to editorial use covering London transport infrastructure, historic engineering, sustainable travel, cycling culture, urban mobility, and everyday life along the River Thames.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NWK02Y - Fritz-kola (stylized as fritz-kola) is a soft drink made in north Germany and shipped to many nations in the European Union. It has a relatively high caffeine content and is sold in glass bottles with labels which were originally black and white, using the faces of the two founders in the logo.
History
Two students from Hamburg, Lorenz Hampl and Mirco Wiegert, started selling Fritz-kola in 2003. They had a brewery help them develop a cola recipe, choosing to use less sugar and more caffeine (25mg of caffeine per 100ml) than Coke or Pepsi, and adding lemon flavour.[2] They polled people outside a shopping centre to choose the company name. To save money, they used black and white labels and a photoshopped version of pictures of their heads as a logo
they sold the first crates to bars on a returnable basis, and did not establish an office for three years.
Hampl left the business in 2016. As of August 2020, Wiegert heads the company and owns two-thirds of it. The company employs 280 people. Five bottling plants produce the cola, which is sold in a number of European countries
in 2019 its 330ml bottles outsold all brands except Coke, and its other major markets are the Netherlands, Poland, Belgium, and Austria. Sales in 2015 were ?7.4 million

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AE02H2 - Santander Cycles (formerly Barclays Cycle Hire) is a public bicycle hire scheme in London, Swansea, Milton Keynes and Brunel University in the United Kingdom. The scheme's bicycles are popularly known as Boris Bikes, after Boris Johnson who was Mayor of London when the scheme began operating.
The operation of the scheme is contracted by Transport for London to Serco. Bikes and docking stations are provided by 8D Technologies. The scheme is sponsored, with Santander UK being the main sponsor from April 2015. Barclays Bank was the first sponsor, from 2010 to March 2015.
Credit for developing and enacting the scheme has been a source of debate. Johnson has taken credit for the plan, although the initial concept was announced by his predecessor Ken Livingstone, during the latter's term in office. Livingstone said that the programme would herald a cycling and walking transformation in London and Johnson said that he hoped the bikes would become as common as black cabs and red buses in the capital.
A study showed cyclists using the scheme are three times less likely to be injured per trip than cyclists in London as a whole, possibly due to motorists giving cycle hire users more road space than they do other cyclists. Moreover, recent customer research showed that 49 per cent of Cycle Hire members say that the scheme has prompted them to start cycling in London

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT2NR - Cycling to work is a great way of fitting more activity into your busy daily routine, and what better way is there to enjoy the beginning and end of the work day.
It's also good for the environment as you won't be burning any fossil fuels on your commute - the only fuel you'll need is your breakfast.
But how to start cycling to work? You don't need a complicated programme or a detailed plan to start cycling, just a bike and the willingness to give it a go.
If you haven't tried it before you've probably got some questions about how to begin, but with a little preparation and our bike commuting tips below you can enjoy a healthy, cheap start to the day.
Can I cycle that far?
A rough rule of thumb is that most people can cover about five miles in half an hour. It might take some time to build up to the distance you need to cover but in the meantime you're fitting physical activity into your daily routine instead of trying to find time to exercise after work.
If you've got a long way to travel why not put your bike in the car and just cycle the last bit? Chances are this will be the bit that involves traffic jams, frustration and idling engines. You might be surprised by how quickly you're ready to increase the distance too.
I don't feel confident cycling on busy roads
Get some cycle training if you think you need it, especially if you haven't cycled for a long time.
Look into routes that avoid busy roads. A common mistake is to assume that the only route to work is on the main road with all the rush-hour cars.
If anyone from your workplace already cycles your way ask them about the routes they take or even ask them to bike buddy with you.
My bike isn't in great condition
If you're not sure whether your bike is safe, find time to check it over. Take it to a local bike mechanic if you're still not certain.
If it's safe to ride, just give it a go. You can think about whether a better bike might make it even more enjoyable once you've decided to continue cycling

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy T3RF4A - Sturmey-Archer is a manufacturing company originally from Nottingham, England. It primarily produces bicycle hub gears, brakes and a great many other sundry bicycle components, most prominently during their heyday as a subsidiary of the Raleigh Bicycle Company. In the past, it also manufactured motorcycle hubs, gearboxes and engines.
The company was founded in 1902 by Henry Sturmey and James Archer under the guidance of Frank Bowden, the primary owner of Raleigh. In 2000, the assets and trademarks of Sturmey-Archer were sold to Sun Race of Taiwan which was renamed Sun Race Sturmey-Archer Inc and production moved to Taiwan.
All Sturmey Archer gear hubs use epicyclic (planetary) geartrains of varying complexity. The AW is the simplest, using one set of planetary gears with four planets. The AM uses three compound planets with differently sized cogs machined from a common shaft to engage the gear ring and sun gear separately, while the close-ratio three-speeds, and hubs with four or more speeds, use multiple planetary geartrains. Depending on the specific hub these may be in series with each other, or with one or the other set being selectable at any given time by locking a particular sun gear to the axle.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GJBME0 - Warrington has a widespread network of cycle routes with new routes being added all the time. Improvements are also being made to our roads to make them safer and easier for cyclists to use.
Our cycle map has been updated for 2017 and now includes a plan of all the signed routes around town to help you plan your journeys.
Because Warrington is relatively flat and compact, most places are within easy cycling distance to each other.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY7XF8 - Leeds Dock (formerly New Dock and also known as Clarence Dock between 2001 and 2012) is a mixed development with retail, office and leisure presence in central Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It has large residential population in waterside apartments.
New Dock was built in 1843 and was in service until 1990. The Royal Armouries Museum opened in 1996. New Dock was redeveloped as Clarence Dock, a ?250 million mixed-use development between 2001 and 2007. The retail and leisure sector was launched on Saturday 11 October 2008 with fashion shows from celebrity fashion consultant and TV presenter Gok Wan. Leeds Dock now attracts around 1.5 million visitors a year although most of these are due to the proximity of the Royal Armouries Museum. Clarence Dock experienced a turbulent time since launch and is largely viewed as a failure in terms of achieving its initial vision.
It is located by the River Aire next to the Royal Armouries Museum, which faces onto Armouries Square. Leeds Dock's main shopping street, 'The Boulevard' radiates southbound from Armouries Square. Another focal point is 'The Anchorage' at the top of the dock. Clarence House is a 218-foot (66 m) tower containing 227 apartments and six retail units. On completion in April 2007, it became the eighth tallest building in Leeds but is now the twelfth tallest building.
Leeds Dock plays host to an annual Waterfront Festival each June with Dragon Boat Racing centred on Armouries Square.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DBHR4H - Etruria is a suburb of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England.
Etruria was the fourth and penultimate site for the Wedgwood pottery business. Josiah Wedgwood, who was previously based in Burslem, opened his new works in 1769. It was named after the Italian district of Etruria, home of the Etruscan people who were renowned for their artistic products. The site covered 350 acres (140 ha) and was next to the Trent and Mersey Canal. As well as Wedgwood's home, Etruria Hall, it included the Etruria Works which remained in use by the Wedgwood enterprise until 1950. The Wedgwood factory is now in Barlaston, a village about six miles to the south of the Etruria site.
Etruria Hall was the site of the substantial invention of photography by Thomas Wedgwood in the 1790s.
After Wedgwood
Much of Etruria became derelict with the move of Wedgwood after the Second World War and the subsequent closure of the nearby Shelton Bar steelworks. Large-scale regeneration began in the 1980s with the Stoke-on-Trent Garden Festival.
Etruria is home to the Etruria Industrial Museum, a scheduled ancient monument, which includes a working steam engine called Princess. The museum buildings were originally a bone and flint mill built in 1857 to grind materials for the pottery industry. Inside visitors can see displays on the history of the site and original machinery. On the first weekend of each month the museum's 1903 coal-fired boiler provides steam to operate Princess which then turns the grinding machinery.
