Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E93490 - A brightly coloured Soul Man ice cream van is parked at Crosby Beach, north of Liverpool, bringing music, seaside treats and mobile refreshments to the Merseyside coast. The pink, blue and white van advertises freshly made ice cream, lollies, cones and Flannels, with visible social media icons and playful beachside branding. The sandy beach, sea wall, open water and pale coastal light place the scene firmly on Crosby seafront, a popular day-trip destination in the borough of Sefton. Crosby Beach is best known internationally for Antony Gormley's Another Place, the installation of 100 cast-iron figures spread along three kilometres of foreshore, but the everyday visitor experience also includes walking, photography, families, dog walkers, cyclists, promenade users and seasonal food traders. This image is useful for editorial coverage of British seaside culture, ice cream vans, mobile catering, small independent businesses, coastal tourism, family days out, Liverpool day trips, beach refreshments and the continuing appeal of simple seaside treats. The Soul Ice Cream Van has a local social media presence connected with Crosby Beach, while Liverpool visitor coverage describes it as a well-known beach ice cream van associated with classic 99s and lollies. The photograph also works for stories about the economics of seasonal trading, outdoor leisure, post-industrial coastlines, Merseyside tourism, independent food vendors and the way colourful vans become part of the character of a promenade. The dramatic sky, pale sand and parked van create a slightly nostalgic British coastal mood, with the vehicle's modern social media signs contrasting with the old-fashioned pleasure of buying ice cream by the sea. It is a strong documentary stock image for travel guides, local news, lifestyle features, food retail, tourism marketing, family holiday articles, small business profiles and coverage of Crosby Beach as both an art destination and an ordinary working seaside space.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E93491 - Blue King Charles III England Coast Path directional signs for walkers and cyclists at Mariners Road, Crosby, Merseyside, close to Crosby Beach and the Liverpool coastline. The photograph shows paired blue coastal path waymarkers against a pale blue sky, with pedestrian, shell and cycle symbols indicating a shared coastal route for walking, cycling, leisure and access to the seafront. The sign sits near Crosby Leisure Centre, where Sefton Council lists Mariners Road L23 6SX as one of the visitor access points for Crosby Beach and Antony Gormley's Another Place. The image is useful for editorial coverage of the King Charles III England Coast Path, public access to the coast, National Trails, active travel, outdoor recreation, walking tourism, cycling infrastructure, wayfinding signage, public rights of way and sustainable seaside tourism. Government information published in March 2026 said around 2,100 miles of the path were then open with full access rights in place, while National Trails describes the completed route as around 2,700 miles long around the coast of England. Crosby is a strong location for this subject because its seafront links everyday local walking, beach visits, public transport, family recreation, dog walking, cycling and tourism connected with the Iron Men sculptures of Another Place. The sign's simple graphic design, blue colour and clear symbols make it suitable for articles about coastal access policy, route infrastructure, health and wellbeing, car-free days out, seaside public realm and the growing expectation that beaches and waterfronts should be easy to reach and navigate. The photograph also has value for wider debates about access to nature, right-to-roam reform, government investment in trails and how local coastal paths connect into national walking networks. It is a clean, uncluttered stock image for guidebooks, outdoor magazines, council publications, transport features, walking route explainers and news about the continuing rollout

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD23RR - Filey is a seaside town and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It is located between Scarborough and Bridlington on Filey Bay. Although it was a fishing village, it has a large beach and became a popular tourist resort. According to the 2011 UK census, Filey parish had a population of 6,981, in comparison to the 2001 UK census population figure of 6,819, and a population of 6,870 in 1991.
Filey was historically mainly within the East Riding of Yorkshire, although until 1888 a small part of the town, including its parish church, was in the North Riding of Yorkshire. In 1974 the town was transferred to the new county of North Yorkshire.
Filey is at the eastern end of the Cleveland Way, a long-distance footpath
it starts at Helmsley and skirts the North York Moors. It was the second National Trail to be opened (1969). The town is at the northern end of the Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail which starts at Hessle and crosses the Yorkshire Wolds. Filey is the finishing point for Great Yorkshire Bike Ride. The 70-mile (110 km) ride begins at Wetherby Racecourse.
Filey has a railway station on the Yorkshire Coast Line. A second station at Filey Holiday Camp railway station to the south of the town served the former Butlins holiday camp. The camp has since been re-developed into a 600-home holiday housing development, The Bay Filey. It is one of the largest coastal developments of this kind in the UK and the first homes were completed in 2007.
In July 2007 Filey was hit by flash floods which caused major problems

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD23XA - This image shows a crazy golf course on Filey seafront, set alongside the promenade with the wide sandy beach and the North Sea stretching into the distance. The colourful mini golf obstacles sit on the paved promenade area, contrasting with the natural tones of the beach and sea beyond.
People walk along the seafront and pause to look out across Filey Bay, reflecting the area's role as a traditional British seaside resort offering simple outdoor leisure activities. The beach appears at low tide, revealing a broad expanse of sand typical of this stretch of the North Yorkshire coast.
The photograph was taken in daylight under lightly overcast conditions, giving soft, even light across the scene. Crazy golf courses like this are a familiar feature of UK seaside towns, appealing to families and visitors seeking relaxed, nostalgic entertainment close to the beach.
The image captures the blend of leisure, tourism, and open coastal landscape that defines Filey's seafront, illustrating the enduring appeal of traditional seaside attractions alongside the dramatic scale of the North Sea coastline.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JR3MND - Tory government has launched a defensive social media campaign after MPs faced anger from their constituents over last week's sewage vote, in which an amendment to the environment bill that would have placed a legal duty on water companies not to pump waste into rivers was voted down.
Many Conservative MPs posted almost identical statements on Monday morning after a weekend of anger over the vote. Government sources confirmed to the Guardian that the information in these posts had been supplied by No 10.
MPs including Steve Brine, Ben Everitt, Michael Fabricant, Anne Marie Morris and Sally-Ann Hart published similar explainers about the vote on their websites.
Only 22 Conservatives rebelled against the government last week, after the environment secretary, George Eustice, recommended that MPs vote against the amendment.
Martin Salter, the chief policy adviser of the Angling Trust, said: We know from the unconvincing, identikit replies received by our members that government MPs had been instructed to issue with a standard response to constituents which avoided the question of taking action to combat sewage pollution in favour of yet more endless monitoring.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JC40WD - Climbing Wall, Barry Island Eastern Promenade
If you were to fly into Cardiff Airport these days on a clear day and look towards Barry Island, you would see the words YNYS Y BARRI BARRY ISLAND writ large on the wall along the Eastern Promenade. The large scale letters have been formed from colourful, quirky climbing holds and other acrylic shapes of buckets, trains, flip flops, ice cream cones, anchors, fish
The 2014 Celfwaith commission to create a climbing wall was part of a major refurbishment scheme on Barry Island, including structural works to the Eastern end of the Promenade
Early in 2014 Celfwaith appointed Becky Adams to collaborate on consultation meetings and workshops with youth groups at Area 41 and Barry Island, pupils at Barry Island Primary School, and the Barry Island Historical Society.
Gordon Young was appointed to create the climbing wall and had previous experience of creating climbing and bouldering structures in Blackpool. However, his proposal for Barry Island was completely different and captured the fun, colourful and tongue-in-cheek character of the place popularised by Gavin & Stacey.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3T3CD - Viola Beach were an English indie rock group, formed in Warrington, Cheshire, in 2013. The band's final line-up consisted of Kris Leonard (guitar and vocals), River Reeves (guitar), Tomas Lowe (bass guitar), and Jack Dakin (drums). All four, along with their manager Craig Tarry, were killed when their car fell from a bridge in Södertälje, Sweden, on 13 February 2016. Founding members Frankie Coulson and Jonny Gibson are the last surviving members of the band as of 2023.
In the week following the crash, their single Boys That Sing entered the UK Singles Chart at number 80 and their previous single Swings & Waterslides entered at number 11, following a public campaign to boost sales. In the same week, Swings & Waterslides also entered at number three on the sales-only chart (which excludes streaming data) and Boys That Sing entered at number 27 on the same chart. On 29 July 2016, the self-titled album was posthumously released. It reached number one on the UK Albums Chart on 5 August 2016

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DD8H4T - Conwy previously known in English as Conway, is a walled market town, community and the administrative centre of Conwy County Borough in North Wales. The walled town and castle stand on the west bank of the River Conwy, facing Deganwy on the east bank. The town formerly lay in Gwynedd and prior to that in Caernarfonshire. The community, which also includes Deganwy and Llandudno Junction, had a population of 14,753 at the 2011 census.
Although the community of Conwy straddles the River Conwy, for postal purposes the areas on the east bank form part of the post town of Llandudno Junction, with the Conwy post town being confined to west bank of the river. The ward on the west bank of the river had a population of 4,065 at the 2011 census.
The resident population of the wider Conwy County Borough was estimated to be 116,200 in an ONS-estimate.
The name 'Conwy' derives from the old Welsh words cyn (chief) and gwy (water), the river being originally called the 'Cynwy

Coney Island was formerly the westernmost of the Outer Barrier islands on Long Island's southern shore, but in the early 20th century it became connected to the rest of Long Island by land fill. The residential portion of the peninsula is a community of 60,000 people in its western part, with Sea Gate to its west, Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach to its east, the Lower Bay to the south, and Gravesend to the north.
Coney Island was originally part of the colonial town of Gravesend. By the mid-19th century, it became a seaside resort, and by the late 19th century, amusement parks were also built at the location. The attractions reached a historical peak during the first half of the 20th century, declining in popularity after World War II and following years of neglect. The area was revitalized with the opening of the MCU Park in 2001 and several amusement rides in the 2010s.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K5J0D2 - St Ives is on the western shore of St Ives Bay, its harbour sheltered by St Ives Island (a headland) and Smeaton's pier. Close to the harbour, in the old part of the town, the streets are narrow and uneven while its wider streets are in the newer parts of the town on rising ground. The town has four beaches: Porthmeor a surfing beach, Porthgwidden a small sandy cove, Harbour by the working port and Porthminster which has almost half a mile of sand
St Ives (Cornish: Porth Ia, meaning St Ia's cove) is a seaside town, civil parish and port in Cornwall, England. The town lies north of Penzance and west of Camborne on the coast of the Celtic Sea. In former times it was commercially dependent on fishing. The decline in fishing, however, caused a shift in commercial emphasis, and the town is now primarily a popular seaside resort, notably achieving the title of Best UK Seaside Town from the British Travel Awards in both 2010 and 2011. St Ives was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1639. St Ives has become renowned for its number of artists. It was named best seaside town of 2007 by The Guardian newspaper
From medieval times fishing was important at St Ives
it was one of the most important fishing ports on the north Cornish coast. The original pier's construction date is unknown but the first reference to St Ives having a pier was in 1478 in William Worcester's 'Itinerary'.[28] The pier was re-built by John Smeaton between 1766 and 1770 after falling into disrepair. It was lengthened at a later date. The octagonal lookout with a cupola belongs to Smeaton's design.
A. K. Hamilton Jenkin describes how the St Ives fisherman strictly observed Sunday as a day of rest. St Ives was a very busy fishing port and seining was the usual method of fishing. Seining was carried out by a set of three boats of different sizes, the largest two carrying seine nets of different sizes. The total number of crew was seventeen or eighteen. Forty-nine is the square of seven and is therefore the fourth squared prime number. The sum of the digits of the square of 49 (2401) is the square root of 49. Its the first square where the digits are squares. In this case 4 and 9 are squares. It appears in the Padovan sequence, preceded by the terms 21, 28, 37 (it is the sum of the first two of these).
During the Manhattan Project, plutonium was also often referred to, simply, as '49'. Number 4 was for the last digit in 94 (atomic number of plutonium) and 9 for the last digit in Pu-239, the weapon-grade fissile isotope used in nuclear bombs.
49 is the number of days and night Siddhartha Gautama spent meditating as a holy man. 49ers was the moniker of one who participated in the 1849 California Gold Rush, as well as the USA NFL's San Francisco 49ers. Bob Dylan sang about the 'Days of '49'.

Is This Desire? is a 1998 (see 1998 in music) album by British singer-songwriter PJ Harvey.
Recorded on and off in Dorset and London between April 1997 and April 1998, it was co-produced by Flood, Head and Harvey herself, and featured instrumental contributions from Rob Ellis, John Parish, Mick Harvey, Eric Drew Feldman, Joe Gore and Jeremy Hogg. It marked a move away from Harvey\u2019s earlier guitar-driven rock style into subtler, quieter, atmospheric soundscapes and mood pieces based around keyboards, bass and electronics.
The album met with a mixed reception from critics and fans upon release, some of whom were disappointed by Harvey\u2019s experimental and less bombastic new style. Reviews were generally positive, however. Q magazine praised the record as 'disturbing and excellent', CMJ called it 'another milestone in her already illustrious career', and Entertainment Weekly said it 'seethes with hypnotic power'
the magazine Dazed &
Confused claimed 'Is This Desire? will be a classic of the next 10 if not 20 years.
It has the impeccable timing of jazz, the arrangement of a classic dance track, the depth of an orchestral symphony and the emotional charge of gospel.' It received a Grammy Award nomination as Best Alternative Music Performance of 1998. Although it did not sell as well as her 1995 commercial breakthrough To Bring You My Love, it did spawn her biggest UK hit with the single 'A Perfect Day Elise'
a second single, 'The Wind', also dented the UK Top 30.
Blackpool Illuminations is an annual Lights Festival, founded in 1879 and first switched on 18 September that year, held each autumn in the English seaside resort of Blackpool on the Fylde Coast in Lancashire.
Also known locally as The Lights or The Illuminations, they run each year for sixty-six days, from late August until early November at a time when most other English seaside resorts' seasons are coming to an end. Dubbed as 'the greatest free light show on earth', they are 6 miles (10 km) long and use over one million bulbs. The display stretches along the Promenade from Starr Gate at the south end of the town to Bispham in the north.
In 2011 the Illuminations will shine from 2 September to 6 November 2011

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4714928394 - 'The Celtic cross is a symbol that combines a cross with a ring surrounding the intersection.
In the Celtic Christian world it was combined with the Christian cross and this design was often used for high crosses. These are free-standing crosses made of stone and often richly decorated.
With the Celtic Revival, the shape, usually decorated with interlace and other motifs from Insular art, became popular for funerary monuments and other uses, and has remained so, spreading well beyond the British Isles.
It is popular in Cornwall where an individual feeling of ancient culture lives on, as can be seen in the Barnoon cemetary here, which overlooks the St Ives surfing beach of Porthmeor.
In Celtic regions of Ireland and later in Great Britain, many free-standing upright crosses or high crosses were erected by Irish monks, beginning at least as early as the 7th century. Some of these 'Celtic' crosses bear inscriptions in runes. There are surviving free-standing crosses in Cornwall (famously St Piran's cross at Perranporth) and Wales, on the island of Iona and in the Hebrides, as well as the many in Ireland. Other stone crosses are found in the former Northumbria and Scotland, and further south in England.
Due to its simplicity as a symboil, in Germany, the Celtic cross was adopted by a prohibited neo-Nazi party (VSBD/PdA) leading to the ban of the symbol.

Infra Red Film from Kodak (HIE) has been used here. This film used to have to be loaded, unloaded and developed in absolute darkness. Results could be rewarding though as this shot on a hot summers day shows. Blue sky becomes inky black, warm skin glows. Foliage comes up like snow.
To get something similar with any summer shot with blue sky and green grass, in Photoshop try the following:

Set Red=-70, Green=+200, Blue=-30

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RDAW24 - Whether you're at home or abroad, you can still enjoy the sunshine with these tips:
use a water-resistant UVA and B sunscreen of at least SPF 30 for best protection. The higher the SPF, the more effective the sun protection
put in on all parts of your skin that are in the sun, and reapply through the day, especially after a swim as it might wash off (even if it's water resistant)
stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm it's at its most dangerous then
don't try to get burnt - a lot of young people think that burning = tanning. You don't need to burn so you can tan
wear a hat or cap to keep the heat off your head, and look stylish with sunglasses

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBJ9W9 - Coney Island is a peninsular residential neighborhood, beach, and leisure/entertainment destination of Long Island on the Coney Island Channel, which is part of the Lower Bay in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn in New York City.
