Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X5K8B6 - An open trench showing replacement gas pipes during utility renewal works in Thelwall, Warrington, Cheshire, England. The image shows newly installed yellow gas pipes laid within an excavated trench, surrounded by orange safety barriers used to protect pedestrians and vehicles during roadworks.
The works form part of a gas main renewal programme historically associated with Transco, the former gas transportation business of National Grid, now operating under Cadent Gas following industry restructuring. Such programmes are designed to replace ageing iron gas mains with modern polyethylene piping to improve safety, reliability, and long-term resilience of the gas distribution network.
Thelwall is a residential village area south of Warrington, where infrastructure upgrades are typically carried out on local roads serving housing estates and village centres. Utility works of this type are a common feature of UK streets, often requiring temporary traffic management and causing short-term disruption in exchange for long-term improvements to essential services.
This image is suitable for editorial use illustrating gas infrastructure renewal, utility maintenance, civil engineering works, public safety measures, local roadworks, and the ongoing investment required to maintain underground energy networks in towns and villages across England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5RC - This photograph shows spectators queuing at an entrance to Silverstone Circuit during the Formula One British Grand Prix, waiting to pass through security screening on a clear and sunny morning. Long lines of fans are guided by temporary metal barriers towards controlled access points, reflecting the scale and organisation required to manage one of the UK's largest annual sporting events.
Security checks at major Formula One events typically include bag inspections and restrictions on items such as alcohol containers and prohibited objects, forming part of wider crowd safety and risk management arrangements. The visible queuing system and open terrain underline the logistical challenges of processing large volumes of people efficiently while maintaining public safety and a positive visitor experience.
The image captures the anticipation and atmosphere of race day, with spectators dressed for warm weather and moving steadily towards the circuit interior. Parked vehicles, fencing, and temporary infrastructure in the background illustrate the extensive operational footprint that surrounds a modern international motorsport event.
Well suited for editorial use, this photograph documents crowd behaviour, event security, and spectator management at a major UK sporting venue, highlighting the behind-the-scenes realities that support safe access to large-scale Formula One events.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP36X - This image shows the Coleraine signal box, a traditional brick-built railway control structure located on Railway Road, Coleraine, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Positioned next to the station and adjacent to the bus and rail interchange, the signal box plays a key role in managing train movements, signalling, and level crossings on this important section of the Northern Ireland rail network.
The structure features classic railway architecture, with an elevated glazed operating room providing clear sightlines over the tracks, along with visible barrier mechanisms and signalling equipment. A British railway crossing arm and associated safety infrastructure are prominent, illustrating the continued operational importance of the site.
Coleraine is a strategic rail junction, linking services between Belfast, Derry~Londonderry, and the north coast, and the signal box represents both the heritage and ongoing functionality of the region's rail system. The image is suitable for editorial use relating to rail transport, signalling systems, infrastructure management, public transport history, and Northern Ireland rail operations.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PYTG0H - The Elections Act 2022 is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, introduced to the House of Commons in July 2021, and receiving Royal Assent on 28 April 2022. The Act makes photo identification compulsory for in-person voting in Great Britain for the first time. Until then, Northern Ireland had been the only part of the UK to require voter identification. The Act will also give government new powers over the independent elections regulator
the Electoral Commission has said it is concerned about its independence from political influence in the future. According to academic research presented to the House of Commons, these changes may result in 1.1 million fewer voters at the next general election due to the photo ID requirement.
Key elements of the Act were opposed by parliamentary committees, the House of Lords, the Electoral Commission, devolved governments, and academics. Changes proposed by the House of Lords were rejected by Boris Johnson's government. Some opponents said it would hinder certain groups of people from voting, because they were less likely to have photo IDs. William Wallace, Baron Wallace of Saltaire, described it as a nefarious piece of legislation that is shabby and illiberal. Toby James, a professor of politics and public policy, has said the inclusiveness of elections has been undermined by the act and it weakens the UK's claim to be a beacon of democracy. The Labour Party said the Conservatives are trying to rig the rules of the game to help themselves. A free voter ID card was introduced for those who did not have other forms of identification.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG1TWA - A public electric vehicle street charger manufactured by EBGO, photographed in the village of Heptonstall, Calderdale, West Yorkshire. The charger is mounted on a pavement edge and protected by metal bollards, designed to prevent accidental vehicle impact and ensure safe public use.
Street-level EV charging points such as this form an increasingly important part of the UK's transition towards low-emission transport. Installed in residential and village locations, they support drivers without access to private driveways, enabling overnight and short-stay charging for electric cars and vans.
Heptonstall is a small Pennine village above the Calder Valley, and the presence of modern EV infrastructure reflects the spread of sustainable transport technology beyond major towns and cities into rural communities. The charger's compact, upright design and digital interface demonstrate the integration of smart technology into everyday streetscapes.
Photographed in daylight with surrounding greenery and pavement visible, the image documents the practical reality of electric vehicle infrastructure at a local level. It is suitable for editorial use relating to climate policy, electric vehicles, rural sustainability, public infrastructure investment, and the decarbonisation of transport in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M4W2KT - The Elizabeth line is a high-frequency hybrid urban?suburban rail service in London and its suburbs. It runs services on dedicated infrastructure in central London from the Great Western Main Line west of Paddington to Abbey Wood and via Whitechapel to the Great Eastern Main Line near Stratford
along the Great Western Main Line from London Paddington to Reading and Heathrow Airport in the west
and along the Great Eastern Main Line between Stratford and Shenfield in the east. The service is named after Queen Elizabeth II, who officially opened the line on 17 May 2022 during her Platinum Jubilee year
passenger services started on 24 May 2022.
Under the project name of Crossrail, the system was approved in 2007, and construction began in 2009. Originally planned to open in 2018, the project was repeatedly delayed, including for several months as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In May 2015, existing commuter services on a section of one of the eastern branches, between Liverpool Street and Shenfield, were transferred to TfL Rail
this precursor service also took control of Heathrow Connect in May 2018, and some local services on the Paddington to Reading line in December 2019. These services were augmented by a new central section in May 2022, and rebranded as the Elizabeth line. The outer services were connected to the central section in November 2022. By May 2023, the central section will have up to 24 nine-carriage Class 345 trains per hour in each direction.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M6GB41 - Eight months of diversions in Wolverhampton city centre as pedestrian area expands
One of Wolverhampton city centre's best-known roads has permanently closed to cars and other nearby roads have temporarily shut as work to transform the area continues.
Cars have driven down Victoria Street for the final time as the road becomes forever traffic-free under a ?15.7 million council project.
The road, which runs from the Beatties building past the Mander Centre down to Cleveland Street, was pedestrianised to help social distancing when coronavirus arrived in spring 2020 but is now being permanently changed.
Drivers are also facing eight months of diversions, with roads at either end of Victoria Street closed while the bulk of the work takes place this year.
North Street and Mitre Fold, next to the Civic Halls, will not reopen until the end of September while Salop Street is closed from School Street to Victoria Street until the end of July
The first phase of the project will see a new pedestrianised square created where Victoria Street meets Bell Street and Skinner Street just down from the city's major shopping centres.

According to a report by the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) ? appropriately titled Taking the P*** ? a fifth of Britons don't leave their home as often as they'd like because they know they'll struggle to find facilities, a phenomenon known as loo leash. For those with medical conditions, this affects more than four in 10. Ever found yourself deliberately not drinking in case you get caught short? Over half the public intentionally dehydrate themselves for fear of not finding a loo, according to the report.
By next year, 60% of government funding for local authority services will have vanished compared with 2010
The people must take to the urinals, conveniences and the cubicles, or what remains of them, because the right to pee is under threat. The decline of the public toilet ? leaving us creeping into pubs and hoping to avoid the disapproving glare of the bartender ? is just one symptom of the assault on the public realm. By next year, 60% of government funding for local authority services will have vanished compared with 2010. Toilets are not statutory services ? that is, councils are not legally obliged to provide them ? and so hundreds have been axed. The British Toilet Association tells me that up to half of public loos may have been closed over the last decade. In Cornwall, the council has stopped maintaining 94% of its toilets. Three in four Britons polled think there are not enough facilities within their communities. But why should we be resigned to this, legs firmly crossed, as a fact of life? Why is removing waste from our doorsteps regarded as an essential, universal service, but allowing us to remove waste from our bodies is not?
The public realm has been subordinated to the whims of the market and profit for over a generation, and toilets are no exception. You'll often need to spend considerably more than a penny to have a pee.

PLANS have been submitted to carry out necessary repair work to a piece of Warrington's railway heritage.
Network Rail is seeking listed building consent to refurbish Monks Siding Signal Box in Sankey Bridges and give it the loving attention that it rightly deserves.
The Grade II-listed building sits on Quay Fold next to the railway line which connects Warrington Bank Quay and Liverpool South Parkway train stations.
It was built in 1875 and still retains its original 20-lever LNWR tumbler frame.
The signal box is a two-storey timber framed structure. The ground floor houses signalling equipment which is operated by a signaller from the first floor.
The application submitted to Warrington Borough Council proposes all external work, including the repair of timber and guttering.
The timber will then be prepared for painting, before being painted in a colour which matches the existing colour scheme.
Surrounding vegetation and debris to perimeter of signal box will be removed as required, with wrought iron repairs being carried out as required.
Documents submitted as part of the application state: The proposed development is considered necessary to improve and extend the safe operation of the station.
This in turn preserves the building's character and use.
The proposal will not be to the detriment of the building's historic character.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFFP2N - The Environment Agency (EA) is a non-departmental public body, established in 1995 and sponsored by the United Kingdom government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), with responsibilities relating to the protection and enhancement of the environment in England (and until 2013 also Wales).
Purpose
The Environment Agency's stated purpose is, to protect or enhance the environment, taken as a whole so as to promote the objective of achieving sustainable development (taken from the Environment Act 1995, section 4). Protection of the environment relates to threats such as flood and pollution. The vision of the Agency is of a rich, healthy and diverse environment for present and future generations.
Scope
The Environment Agency's remit covers almost the whole of England, about 13 million hectares of land, 22,000 miles (35,000 km) of river and 3,100 miles (5,000 km) of coastline seawards to the three-mile limit which includes 2 million hectares of coastal waters.[2] In a sharing arrangement with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), it also exercises some of its functions over parts of the catchments of the River Tweed and the Border Esk which are, for the most part, in Scotland. Similarly, in an arrangement with NRW, political and operational areas are not coterminus. NRW staff exercise responsibility for parts of the River Dee (Wales) in England and EA staff exercise operational responsibility for those parts of the River Severn catchment in Wales.
Structure
The Environment Agency employs around 11,200 staff. It is organised into eight directorates that report to the chief executive.
There are two policy and process directorates. One deals with Flood and Coastal Risk Management and the other with Environment and Business. These are backed up by the Evidence directorate. The fourth directorate is a single Operations delivery unit, responsible for national services, and line management of all the Regional and Area staff.

The proposed city centre ?30M hotel, has been designed with the environment in mind and boasts a contemporary fa??ade sympathetic to the surrounding buildings and has low carbon emissions and low energy demands.
The steel frame structure includes the provision of basement parking, whilst using a simple and refined pallet of materials that are warm and tactile in texture. The fa??ade features large format/deep reveal openings that are sympathetic to the surrounding warehouses and will ensure the project is a striking addition to the Manchester skyline.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDM156 - The peace lines or peace walls are a series of border barriers in Northern Ireland that separate Catholic and Protestant neighbourhoods. They have been built at urban interface areas in Belfast, Derry, Portadown and elsewhere. The stated purpose of the peace lines is to minimise inter-communal violence between Catholics (most of whom are nationalists who self-identify as Irish) and Protestants (most of whom are unionists who self-identify as British).
The peace lines range in length from a few hundred yards to over three miles (5 km). They may be made of iron, brick, and/or steel and are up to 25 feet (7.6 m) high. Some have gates in them (sometimes staffed by police) that allow passage during daylight but are closed at night.
The most prominent peace lines in the past few years separate the nationalist Falls Road and unionist Shankill Road areas of West Belfast
the Catholic Short Strand from the Protestant Cluan Place areas of East Belfast
and the Protestant Fountain estate and Catholic Bishop Street area of Derry.
In 2008, a public discussion began about how and when the peace lines could be removed. While, on 1 September 2011, Belfast City Council agreed to develop a strategy regarding the removal of peace walls, a study was released in 2012 indicating that 69% of residents believe that the peace walls are still necessary because of potential violence. At the end of 2011, several local community initiatives resulted in the opening of a number of interface structures for a trial period.
In January 2012, the International Fund for Ireland launched a Peace Walls funding programme to support local communities who want to work towards beginning to remove the peace walls. In May 2013, the Northern Ireland Executive committed to the removal of all peace lines by mutual consent by 2023.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP37C - NI Railways, also known as Northern Ireland Railways (NIR) (Irish: Iarnr??d Thuaisceart ??ireann)
and for a brief period Ulster Transport Railways (UTR), is the railway operator in Northern Ireland. NIR is a subsidiary of Translink, whose parent company is the Northern Ireland Transport Holding Company (NITHCo), and is one of seven publicly owned train operators in the United Kingdom, the others being Direct Rail Services, Northern Trains, Transport for Wales Rail, Southeastern, LNER, and ScotRail. It has a common Board of Management with the other two companies in the group, Ulsterbus and Metro (formerly Citybus).
The rail network in Northern Ireland is not part of the National Rail network of Great Britain, nor does it use Standard Gauge, instead using Irish Gauge in common with the Republic of Ireland. Also, NIR is the only commercial non-heritage passenger operator in the United Kingdom to operate a vertical integration model, with responsibility of all aspects of the network including running trains, maintaining rolling stock and infrastructure, and pricing. Since the Single European Railway Directive 2012, the company has allowed open access operations by other rail operators, although no operator has started such a service. In 2019, NI Railways carried over 15 million passengers

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EYPFF9 - Tesla, following the settlement of a long-running legal case, is finally going to bring some Superchargers to the UK's motorways. Seven new Supercharging stations, all located at motorway service stations, are now in the process of being built, with more coming soon.
Heretofore, Tesla's somewhat anaemic Supercharger roll-out in the UK had mostly been located in cities
not exactly the ideal place to charge up your car for a long-distance drive. Some Superchargers were located near a motorway or main road, but not in motorway service stations.
As reported by Engadget, the dearth of motorway Superchargers was apparently due to a legal dispute between Tesla and Ecotricity, a UK-based company that already had a large number of electric vehicle charging points across the country, including exclusivity deals at motorway service stations.
According to a few newspaper and website reports, Tesla approached Ecotricity prior to the launch of right-hand-drive Model S in the UK, to try and strike some kind of deal to get Supercharging stations into motorway service stations. Seemingly, at some point that deal turned sour, with Ecotricity's founder saying back in May 2014 that this is nothing more than an attempted smash and grab raid. Soon after, both companies hunkered down in litigation land, suing and countersuing each other. This week they finally reached an out-of-court settlement.
Yesterday, somewhat suspiciously and/or coincidentally, both Tesla and Ecotricity published very similar blog posts. Neither post referenced the other company, instead focusing on their commitment to grow their UK electric vehicle charging networks. While the details of the settlement are confidential, given that Tesla is now allowed to build Superchargers at motorway service stations, it would appear to have got its way.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JDH95B - Brexit: What is the Northern Ireland Protocol?
Northern Ireland Protocol - agreed with the European Union (EU) in 2019 - has been a source of tension since it came into force at the start of 2021.
Special trading arrangements were needed for Northern Ireland after the UK voted for Brexit in 2016. This is because it's the only part of the UK with a land border with an EU country - the Republic of Ireland.
Before Brexit, it was easy to transport goods across this border because both sides had the same EU trade rules. No checks or paperwork were necessary.
After Brexit, a new system was needed because the EU has strict food rules and requires border checks when certain goods - such as milk and eggs - arrive from non-EU countries.
UK and the EU agreed that protecting the 1998 Northern Ireland peace deal - the Good Friday Agreement - was an absolute priority. So, both sides signed the Northern Ireland Protocol as part of the Brexit withdrawal agreement, which is now part of international law.
Foreign Secretary Liz Truss says the Protocol has caused problems which had not been expected when the agreement was signed.
The government now wants to ditch parts of the deal.
It wants to create red lanes and green lanes for goods imported from Britain into Northern Ireland.
