Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EGG899 - Photograph showing the black painted entrance door and decorative glass sign of Whitelock's First City Luncheon Bar in Turk's Head Yard, just off Briggate in Leeds city centre, West Yorkshire. The visible lettering reads Whitelock's First City Luncheon Bar , with good food and always in splendid condition also picked out on the historic window, giving the image strong editorial value for Leeds pubs, heritage hospitality, real ale, traditional lunch rooms and Victorian bar culture. Whitelock's is widely promoted as the oldest public house in Leeds, with the site first opened in 1715 as the Turk's Head, a history still reflected in the name of the narrow yard where the pub sits. The building is Grade II* listed and Historic England records it as a public house with late seventeenth or early eighteenth century origins, later altered and remodelled, with an important late nineteenth century interior. The dark doorway, painted signwriting, reflective glass, black woodwork and whitewashed wall make this a strong close-up documentary image of a hidden Leeds landmark rather than a broad street scene. It is useful for stock searches around Leeds city centre, Briggate, Turk's Head Yard, historic pubs, CAMRA, real ale culture, traditional English bars, Yorkshire tourism, city heritage, listed buildings, food and drink, pub architecture, lettering, signwriting and hospitality history. The tight composition and subdued light suggest a covered or narrow alley setting, typical of Whitelock's tucked-away location. The image can illustrate articles about the survival of independent pubs, historic interiors, the evening economy, visitor attractions, traditional city-centre drinking culture and the continuing appeal of long-established pubs amid modern retail streets.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8PTY5 - A red neon Birmingham Hop Club sign glows behind a protective mesh inside BrewDog Birmingham on John Bright Street, using a skull, crossed hop cones and biker-style lettering to create a bold craft beer bar image. The photograph is useful for editorial stories about BrewDog, craft beer culture, punk branding, city centre bars, hospitality, beer marketing, nightlife and the changing fortunes of UK licensed premises. BrewDog Birmingham is listed by the company at 81 John Bright Street, Birmingham, B1 1BL, close to New Street station and the city centre leisure circuit. The image has extra news value because BrewDog's UK and Irish operations went through administration in 2026, with the business and selected bars bought by Tilray Brands in a rescue deal while many other bars closed and hundreds of jobs were lost. The Birmingham venue still appears on BrewDog's own bar listing, so the image should be captioned carefully as a BrewDog Birmingham interior sign rather than as proof that this individual bar was closed. The red neon, skull motif and Hop Club wording fit BrewDog's long-standing rebellious beer identity and make the picture commercially useful for stories about brand reinvention, craft beer expansion, private equity, failed crowdfunding expectations, bar closures, debt, hospitality costs and the pressure on city centre drinking venues. It can also illustrate wider themes including pub and bar culture in Birmingham, independent-style beer marketing, corporate craft beer, nightlife economy, consumer habits, beer enthusiasts and the tension between edgy branding and mainstream business reality. The dark background and intense red light give the image strong atmosphere, suitable for news, business, food and drink, leisure, hospitality and urban culture features.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAWR2 - A vivid red neon sign displaying the phrase Twenty First Century's Yesterday mounted on an exposed brick wall inside Bruxelles, a long-established bar on Harry Street in Dublin city centre. The sign glows under warm artificial lighting, creating a distinctive evening atmosphere typical of Dublin's nightlife and pub culture.
The image is taken indoors, with no natural daylight visible, suggesting night-time or late-evening trading hours. The saturated red neon contrasts strongly with the dark brick background, giving the scene a retro, slightly underground aesthetic associated with music, arts and alternative culture in the city.
Bruxelles is widely recognised as a cultural meeting place in Dublin, frequented by musicians, artists and writers over many decades. Interior details such as this neon sign contribute to the venue's character and are often used editorially to illustrate stories about Dublin nightlife, urban culture, hospitality, music scenes and creative spaces in Ireland's capital.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8E1GF - The Mancunian railway-style nameplate displayed on the wall inside Stalybridge Buffet Bar on platform 4 of Stalybridge railway station, Tameside, Greater Manchester. The image shows a red curved decorative nameboard with white lettering mounted above a traditional pub interior wall, reflecting the bar's strong railway heritage and Mancunian identity. Stalybridge Buffet Bar is widely known as a surviving Victorian station buffet bar, dating from 1885, with original features, railway memorabilia, real ale and a reputation as one of the best-known stops on the Transpennine Real Ale Trail. The photograph is useful for editorial and commercial subjects including real ale pubs, historic railway stations, station bars, preserved pub interiors, railway memorabilia, Greater Manchester heritage, Tameside tourism, beer tourism, cask ale culture and the social history of British railway refreshment rooms. The word Mancunian links the scene to Manchester identity, local railway history, northern humour, regional pride and the long tradition of named locomotives, nameplates and railway signage used as decoration in pubs and heritage venues. The setting has indoor bar lighting and a warm, nostalgic feel, with the red sign standing out against a teal wall. This image may also suit stories about the Transpennine route, ale trails, railway pub crawls, heritage hospitality, Victorian architecture, Stalybridge station, platform pubs and the continued appeal of traditional real ale bars in an age of modernised railway travel. The photograph should be described carefully as a decorative railway-style sign or nameplate on display, unless the original locomotive provenance is independently confirmed. It captures a small but distinctive detail of a much-loved station pub, combining beer culture, rail enthusiasm, local identity and Greater Manchester pub heritage.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EE4M5B - Real ale drinkers crowd the historic Station Buffet Bar on Platform 4 at Stalybridge railway station in Tameside, Greater Manchester. The lively interior is packed with customers standing around the original marble-topped bar, where traditional handpumps dispense changing cask ales, locally brewed beers and real cider. Railway signs, locomotive nameplates, destination boards, clocks, photographs and other memorabilia cover the deep red walls, creating the atmosphere of a working railway museum combined with a popular public house.
The buffet occupies buildings created during the station's reconstruction in 1885 and is one of the few surviving licensed Victorian railway refreshment rooms in England to retain much of its historic character. CAMRA recognises the interior as being of very special national historic interest. Its surviving features include the marble counter, period back fittings, decorative details and adjoining former first-class ladies' waiting room, which was incorporated during an expansion while preserving its ornate ceiling and railway heritage.
The photograph captures the social appeal of real ale culture, with friends, rail passengers, local regulars and visiting beer enthusiasts gathering in a compact and convivial space. Stalybridge is a recognised stop on the TransPennine Real Ale Trail, and the buffet has become a destination in its own right rather than simply somewhere to wait for a train. Its continued popularity shows how historic station pubs can support tourism, local brewing, railway heritage and community life.
Bright brass beer engines, pump clips and polished wood contrast with the crowded bar and densely displayed railway artefacts. This editorial image is suitable for themes involving British pub culture, CAMRA heritage interiors, cask beer, railway tourism, historic station architecture, community pubs, social drinking, industrial history and the preservation of distinctive independent hospitality venues.

The image combines Scottish beer branding, pub interior detail, bar counter culture and local civic identity, making it useful for stories about Tennent's lager, Scottish pubs, Dundee nightlife, draught beer, pub design, branded fonts and the way national beer brands adapt their marketing to local places. The Pillars Bar and Salty Dog Lounge is listed by the Food Standards Agency at 9 Crichton Street, Dundee, DD1 3AP, and CAMRA describes The Pillars as dating back to 1864, believed to be the oldest pub in Dundee, with a loyal regular trade and a handpull for real ale. The image is commercially useful for coverage of Dundee hospitality, historic pubs, city-centre drinking, bar interiors, Scottish beer culture, cask ale, CAMRA pubs, local tourism, pub heritage and the survival of traditional bars in changing high streets. The nearby Schehallion Craft Lager pump, back bar bottles, fridges, warm lighting and polished brass handpulls add documentary value, showing a working pub environment rather than a staged product shot. The tall red Tennent's T-shaped font gives the scene strong visual impact and would suit features on beer marketing, lager sales, branded draught equipment, Scottish brewing, pub chains, independent pubs, local identity and the night-time economy. As a stock image, it records a small but distinctive piece of pub culture, where beer branding, local landmarks, regular customers, tourism and Dundee's long drinking history meet at the bar.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RKGHJY - Taken on 21 Feb 2023, this photograph shows Timetable for Fastnacht 2023 in Mainz city, Germany, 16th February to Wednesday 22nd 2023. The location is Mainz city centre, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains public house signs, frontage, street activity or drinking culture details useful for hospitality and heritage features. Mainz Fastnacht is one of Germany's major carnival traditions, combining political humour, costumes, parades, pub events and local identity in the Rhineland-Palatinate capital. It could support features on pubs, beer, leisure, nightlife, tourism, heritage streets, local economies, independent hospitality and the pressures facing town-centre venues. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include Mainz, centre, Rosenmontagszug, Rose Monday, Marinas, Worm-AB, building, February, 2023, carnival, city, Germany, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. This makes the image useful for comparison pieces, then-and-now features, local news, regeneration stories and plain-English explainers aimed at a general audience. Further SEO-friendly usage could include local services, town-centre change, heritage branding, British social history, public infrastructure, consumer

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M69C9T - Sitting sweetly on the bank of the River Medlock, just up the road from Oxford Road, the Lass O' Gowrie is an ancient and venerable Irish (but originally Scottish) pub and Manchester landmark, appearing on maps as early as 1844, back when it stood next to the Garratt Cotton Mill. Back then it was surrounded by hardcore slums which are now modern housing for a modern Manchester.
Complete with original tilework and fittings, the Lass sees a cheerful and diverse crowd on Fridays and Saturdays. It's very popular for post-work drinks or as a staging post on your way to Canal Street or the Northern Quarter.
One of the Lass O' Gowrie's unique features is its balcony-based smoking area, built out over the river below (and well-secured with high walls, so don't worry about stumbling). There's something very special about this particular slice of the city, with the Kimpton Clocktower Hotel off to the north, the opposite balcony of Joshua Brooks just to your east, and the pleasant sounds of the River Medlock filling the evening.
What's on the tap? Well, first and foremost the answer is Guinness, and that's what we recommend to be in keeping with the theme. But you should also check out the various craft beers on the list, like Tollgate Brewery's Belmorado pale ale. Guest beers circulate through the tap month by month, so there's always something new to try. The Lass O' Gowrie can also offer a selection of jolly bar snacks for all you pork scratching aficionados out there.
Listing NGR: SJ8431397523 - As it's surrounded by exciting developments like Circle Square, the Lass O' Gowrie caters to a diverse crowd of students, professionals, and tourists, so whoever you are, you're bound to find a warm welcome in the pub's surprisingly large interior.

Opened in 1878, it is a Grade II* listed building, operated by Blackpool Entertainment Company Limited on behalf of Blackpool Council, which purchased the property from Leisure Parcs Ltd as part of a £40 million deal in 2010.
The Winter Gardens has hosted the annual Trades Union Congress, the Conservative Party Conference, Labour Party Conference, and the twice-annual Liberal Democrat Conference. The venue's owners claim that every Prime Minister since World War II has addressed an audience at the venue.
It has also hosted the Blackpool Dance Festival since its inception in 1920, and the World Matchplay darts tournament since 1994. The annual dance competitions Miss Dance of Great Britain and Dance Master UK are hosted there annually.
The Winter Gardens is in Blackpool's town centre, about 250 metres from the sea front. The complex occupies most of its block, a roughly square footprint with sides about 200 metres in length. The two north-facing corners of the block are not taken up by the Gardens buildings themselves, however, but by shops and restaurants. The northwest corner is completely separated by a road serving the stage door of the theatres. The west face also accommodates a few small shops with the same architectural styling as the main building. The complex is bounded by roads on all sides Church Street, Leopold Grove, Adelaide Street and Coronation Street

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JN1FP3 - Albion, translated to present-day terms, means white' and is often associated with all things English. The present day ambience of the Albion's interior reflects this translation and has firm connections with the Great War going far beyond the modern concept' pub of today.
Mike Mercer has run the Albion Inn for over 37 years and has created and captured the essence of the Great War 1914-18 in this last remaining classic Victorian corner street pub within the City Walls of Chester.
Albion Street, and the adjoining Volunteer Street both lead to the former Drill Hall, which was a recruiting centre during the First World War.
Many a young lad would have spent his King's Shilling in the bar of the Albion before going to face the horrors of the Western Front.
The Albion Inn dates from the late 1880's and Mike and Christina have managed to retain the traditional three room layout covering Vault, Snug and Lounge, containing Great War artefacts and pictures, which give a distinct period feel, together with posters and enamelled advertising signs.
At the same time, The Albion provides high standards of food, drink and accommodation, worthy of its entry in many National and International Guides and Publications.

A very fine pub in central Liverpool which is one to compare with other excellent Heritage pubs on Merseyside - the Stork
in Birkenhead, the Prince Arthur
in Liverpool and the Edinburgh
in Crosby
Like them it is a Victorian building (in this case of c.1865) re-modelled about in the early 20th century. They all share corner sites with the public bar occupying the angle and surrounded by an L-shaped corridor. All too have beautiful tiled dados in their corridors dating from Edwardian re-modelling schemes (as seen in our picture). A further similarity is the way the corridor works to provide a drinking area.
Discovery of the documents submitted to the licensing justices enabled former licensee, John O'Dowd, to trace the evolution of the pub to its present form. Back in 1903 a plan shows the public bar laid out as it is now. There was a snug behind it in the heart of the building and left of this, and on the site of the present toilets, a public room labelled parlour'. Then in 1915 the Lion expanded by taking in the building next door at 28 Tithebarn Street also a licensed premises. This enabled the L-shaped corridor to be created round the public bar and the formation of two rooms behind this - a news room in the newly acquired area (the name still survives in the window glass) and a lounge where the skylight is today. Then in 1967, when pubs everywhere were being opened up, plans were drawn up to remove the walls to the corridor from these rooms. These were duly implemented and the corner entrance was blocked. (hence the pub does not merit entry in the Part One of the National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors. In 1979 they added glazed partitions, one outside the gents and one on the right as you enter the news room.
The porch on Moorfields side has mosaic floor and one tiled wall from floor to ceiling.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P4HWF0 - The Bartons Arms is a public house in the High Street (part of the A34) in the Newtown area of Aston, Birmingham, England.
Built in 1900-1901 by noted pub architects partnership James and Lister Lea for Mitchells & Butlers, it is a grade II* listed building, and is on the Campaign for Real Ale's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors.
The pub is known for its wall-to-wall Minton-Hollins tiles and its snob screens, which allowed middle class drinkers to see working class drinkers in an adjacent bar, but not to be seen by them.[1] The current public bar was originally divided into three. There are function rooms upstairs, originally for billiards and club use.
Laurel and Hardy once stayed there, after appearing at the adjacent Aston Hippodrome (now demolished, replaced by The Drum Arts Centre), and were photographed serving beer from behind the bar.
The pub features in the 1999 Atom Egoyan Birmingham-set film Felicia's Journey. It also features in the 2006 novel by Ron Dawson, The Last Viking: The Untold Story of the World's Greatest Heist
as the gang of robbers meet in the pub.
It was purchased in 2002 by Oakham Ales who restored the building to its former greatness before reopening it in 2003, after three years out-of-use. On 28 July 2006, the pub was damaged by fire, reportedly caused by an electrical fault.
During the 2011 England riots, the pub was looted, windows were smashed, and fires started, albeit quickly doused by the manager, Wichai Thumjaron. Up to eight shots were fired at police who attended the incident.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEJ6M8 - The Black Friar Pub. Post-1903 work by Herbert Fuller-Clark (b.1869, d. after 1912). Original building 1875. Remodelled in several stages beginning 1903, 1914, and 1925. 174 Queen Victoria Street, London EC4. Individual sculptures by Nathaniel Hitch, Frederick Callcott, Henry Poole, and Farmer and Brindley. According to Philip Ward-Jackson,
Hitch was responsible for the stonework grotesques on the exterior, and for a considerable amount of similar work in wood in the interior. Callcott created the pattern for the larger copper relief scenes, representing the day to day activities of the friars. . . . It seems probable that Callcott went on working on those reliefs until shortly before his death in 1925, when the rather more prestigious Henry Poole took over, to produce the relief work in the Small Saloon Bar. One of Callcott's frieze-like panels, entitled Saturday Afternoon, was to be repeated on the screen wall, separating the Luncheon Bar from the Small Saloon Bar, although it looks quite different in its new form, because the figures are much more widely spaced out, and the coloured marbles in the second rendering give it more depth.
Of these artists, Hitch (1841-1935), deserves to be better known. Following an apprenticeship to Farmer and Brindley, he had a very long and distinguished career as a sculptor: his work can be found at Cardiff Castle, suggesting that he was probably a member of William Burges's workforce there, and also in many churches and cathedrals including Truro Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. He was particularly associated with the architects W. D. Caröe and J. L. Pearson.
It is worth noting that the popular London Encyclopaedia disagrees about the dates and artists involved here, stating simply that the building was erected in 1875, the ground floor being remodelled in 1905 by H. Fuller Clark. The outside is covered with mosaics and carved figures by Henry Poole (1903).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy E6JB5B - There has been a pub called The Red Lion on this site ever since 1788. The one you see today was constructed in 1821 and, thanks to surviving the Blitz completely intact, has become one of London's rare examples of original ornate Victoriana at its finest.
Uniquely, the pub is full of specially commissioned glasswork, with much of it thought to have been created by the renowned Walter Gibb and Sons of Blackfriars, using some of the most advanced engraving and etching techniques available at the time. While nobody is sure why there are so many mirrors, one theory is that they were deliberately commissioned by a local magistrate at the time in order to reduce the privacy of the pub's snugs, and therefore smiting the activity of local women of the night.
Whatever the reason, it has led to The Red Lion being described as 'a perfect example of the small Victorian gin palace at its best' by Architectural Review, and it really is a window into life in the late 19th century.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy E6JB5C - There has been a pub called The Red Lion on this site ever since 1788.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCE73P - Inside The famous Anchor Tap
Situated on the south side of the Thames in the Tower Bridge Conservation Area, this historic Southwark pub offers a truly traditional English experience. From the fish and chip suppers served, to the string of clearly designated separate rooms, upright piano, games room and open fire this pub effortlessly captures old-fashioned England.
Within the dark, oak walls of this late 18th century, former dock-workers pub, one of the most quintessentially English inventions took seed. Dr Samuel Johnson compiled his English dictionary in a special room inside The Anchor Tap. Originally a place for brewery employees to sample the fruits of their labour, a Tap Room was traditionally set up near its parent brewery.
The Anchor Tap was the first such establishment set up by British brewing legends, John Courage, and was located in close proximity to the former Anchor Brewery and the old Hop Exchange on Borough High Street. The Anchor Tap is an unpretentious, wharfside treasure offering a simple taste of a bygone English age.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H366T8 - This documentary stock photograph shows Traditional Pub English Games, dominos with drinkers and pint of Timothy Taylor Landlord bitter, Shipley, Yorkshire, England, UK. The subject is rooted in Shipley, Yorkshire and is useful for editorial stories about Yorkshire pub culture, real ale, hand-pulled beer, traditional games and the social life of local pubs. The visible detail and caption make it more valuable than a generic bar or drink image, because it shows a real venue, real pub behaviour or a specific building connected with local social life. British pubs remain important as places to meet, eat, drink, watch sport, play traditional games and maintain informal community networks, while at the same time facing pressure from energy costs, staffing, changing drinking habits, business rates, rent, supermarket alcohol and the shift towards food-led trade. This image can support articles about real ale, hand pumps, cellar-to-bar service, drinkers, pub games such as dominoes, historic pub interiors, public house survival, tourism, hospitality employment, licensing, town-centre economies and the role of pubs in working-class and city life. It can also work for features on CAMRA, beer heritage, cask ale quality, independent pubs, after-work drinkers, railway-station pubs, local economies and nostalgia for sociable, unpretentious public houses. Search-friendly composite terms include traditional British pub culture, real ale handpull pint, Yorkshire pub games, London historic pub, pub hospitality industry, community local, cask beer service, licensed premises and UK evening economy. The documentary approach gives editors a credible image for news, magazine, web, tourism, food and drink, business, leisure, heritage and social commentary use. Where people or hands are visible, the photograph can also suggest the tactile, social side of pubs, including ordering, serving, chatting, playing and lingering rather than simply consuming a product.

Well, Dewsbury West Yorkshire actually! Its the other end of the ale trail to Stalyvegas, in case you were wondering....
From 1848 to 1968, when British Rail gasped its last puff of steam, Wellington Road Station was a thriving giant on the Trans-Pennine route. The next 25 years saw it decline and most of it closed as it was de-manned.
That all changed in 1994 when the old waiting rooms were renovated and converted into a bar. The high street banks and big breweries did not want to know. But with the help of the Co-op Bank and an independent Lincolnshire brewery, Batemans, of Skegness, Mike Field was able to realise his dream.
The bar is situated in the original railway station building as operated by London and North Western Railways (LNWR). The Italianate/Tudor style is very unusual and is best appreciated from the car park (former Goods Yard). Perhaps most unusual is the use of an Arabic Arch in each doorway and window and in the re-discovered archways which separate each room.
The West Riding does a mean \u00a33 bacon &
sausage bap with brown sauce. Worth a trip to have one even if you are tee-total.
'Last Train to Trancentral (Live from the Lost Continent)', was a successful acid house KLF single from April 1991. It reached no 2 in the UK Singles Chart and achieved international top ten placings.
It was used by Exeter City FC during their promotion season 2007-08 prior to kick-off in order to generate an atmosphere.
With The KLF's profits, Drummond and Cauty established the K Foundation and sought to subvert the art world, staging an alternative art award for the worst artist of the year and burning one million pounds sterling. As we all now know, Exeter City could have done with that cash!

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4546943548 - 'One of my favourite watering holes in the city of Edinburgh. Delightfully tucked away off Princes Street and away from the rowdy bars of Rose Street. My default choice in there is Weihenstephan - '\u00e4lteste Brauerei der Welt' (lierally Dedicating Stefan - oldest brewery of the world), which is a lovely pint, in its own special tall glass. A plaque outside details its history.
The origins of the site was the Guildford Arms Hotel. This was more or less totally rteworked by Robert Macfarlane Cameron in 1898. It was modelled on the then popular victorian gin palace theme echoing the Phil in Liverpool and the Crown in Belfast among others. Most pubs were at the time male dominated and frankly dingy and possibly a little dangerous. The temperance movement is said to have encouraged the design of more luxurious pubs, particularly suitable for the fairer sex rather than just men.
The current configuration dates from 1940. However the centrepoint of the Guildford\u2019s late Victorian opulence is the magnificent Jacobean style ceiling which can be seen in this image. A row of real ale pumps on the bar all have the logo of DM Stewart, owner since victorian days.
A grand old Thorne Brothers Mirror hangs at the end of the bar. Just below the cornice height, wood panelling conceals a hidden room: legend has that this was aparently used to store spirits and other liquor which was pumped to the room from street level. A narrow walkway
leads from this room around the inner walls to the Gallery. This gallery now provides an ideal spot for diners to marvel at the superbly decorated ceiling or gaze down at the punters in the Public Bar. Both lunch and dinner are served in the Gallery Restaurant with lunch and snacks (Chilli Cashews is my weakness when in there) also served in the Lounge &
Public Bar areas. I can vouch for the excellent range of real ales. Usually a wider selection from Scotland (including the islands) than the neighbour to the south too. Readers of The Edinburgh Evening News voted the Guildford Arms Best City Bar in 1999. If you are in town and have a spare hour or so for victorian time travel, pop in!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJCCB1 - Ye Cracke is a pub in Rice Street, just off Hope Street, in Liverpool, Merseyside, England. The name is in Old English: the Y is a thorn and the e on the end of Cracke is silent, thus the name is correctly pronounced The Crack. Despite the name, Ye Cracke is a 19th-century pub. The War Office is a small room in the pub, which is the oldest part of the pub.
It has historical connections with The Beatles because it was frequented by John Lennon and his girlfriend Cynthia when they were at art school, as well as the Dissenters, to whom a plaque hangs in the bar.
Thomas Cecil Gray and John Halton conceived the techniques described in their 1946 book A Milestone in Anaesthesia while in the pub.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEY9JR - The Philharmonic Dining Rooms is the name of a public house at the corner of Hope Street and Hardman Street in Liverpool, Merseyside, England, and stands diagonally opposite the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. It is commonly known as The Phil. The public house has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade II* listed building.
The interior is decorated in musical themes that relate to the nearby concert hall. These decorations are executed on repoussé copper panels designed by Bare and by Thomas Huson, plasterwork by C. J. Allen, mosaics, and items in mahogany and glass. Two of the smaller rooms are entitled Brahms and Liszt. Of particular interest to visitors is the high quality of the gentlemen's urinals, constructed in a particularly attractive roseate marble
