Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EW7CF6 - Tesco Express store frontage in Grappenhall, Warrington, Cheshire, showing a large Come On England! banner fixed along the outside fencing beneath the main Tesco Express fascia sign. The banner uses a green football pitch background with red and white football graphics based on the Cross of St George, creating a clear England football supporter display for a major international tournament or match period. The national flag design, bright supermarket branding and everyday neighbourhood retail setting combine sport, patriotism and consumer marketing in a familiar UK high street context.
The scene shows how large grocery and convenience retailers often use national sporting moments to decorate stores and connect with local customers, particularly during England football fixtures. The St George cross design is widely used by supporters across England and is strongly associated with men's and women's national team competitions, pubs, supermarkets, homes, cars and street displays. Here it appears as part of a commercial shopfront promotion rather than a standalone flag, making the image useful for editorial themes around football fever, retail marketing, British consumer culture, national identity and local community response to sport.
Grappenhall is a suburban village area of Warrington in Cheshire, close to Stockton Heath and the Bridgewater Canal corridor. Tesco Express stores operate as smaller convenience branches of the wider Tesco supermarket chain, typically serving local shoppers with food, household basics and quick top-up purchases. This image also records visible retail signage, branded shopfront design and a sunny outdoor street scene with blue sky, hard shadows and a practical neighbourhood shopping environment. Visible wording includes TESCO express and Come On England! .

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EW4G1R - Tennent's-style beer advertising and football bunting inside a Scottish pub during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with a large blue banner reading No Scotland, Still Party! and smaller yellow Time to Dream flags hanging below. The display uses Scotland's national colours, the red T beer branding and pub-wall presentation to link lager marketing with football fandom, Tartan Army culture and summer tournament drinking. The wording is a playful twist on the supporter chant and unofficial anthem No Scotland, No Party, shifting the message after Scotland's World Cup involvement into a humorous call to keep socialising, watching matches and buying beer even when the national team is no longer playing. Scotland returned to the men's World Cup in 2026 after a long absence from the finals since France 1998, creating a major commercial opportunity for breweries, pubs, supermarkets and hospitality venues across Scotland. The image captures how drinks brands use major sporting events to sell lager, promote pub gatherings and attach themselves to national identity, hope, disappointment and celebration. Visible stonework, wall lamps, bunting and branded banners give the scene a traditional pub feel, suitable for editorial use around alcohol promotion, sports sponsorship, pub trade, football culture, Scottish supporters, World Cup fever, advertising regulation, hospitality sales and consumer behaviour. The phrase Time to Dream reflects the optimism around qualification and the emotional pull of tournament football, while Still Party underlines the commercial reality that pubs and beer companies continue to market the event beyond a team's exit. The photograph is relevant to stories about Scotland at World Cup 2026, beer advertising in pubs, Tennent's lager branding, national football campaigns, summer drinking, fan rituals, pub screens, tournament merchandising and the wider business of sport-led alcohol marketing in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EME6K6 - Taken in June 2026, this editorial photograph shows a large Restore Britain election placard displayed outside a brick-built home on a council estate in Hindley during the Makerfield by-election in Greater Manchester. The purple and blue sign reads We're Voting Restore Britain , with a smaller matching poster visible on the front door behind it. The image documents the visible street-level campaigning of Restore Britain, the far right-wing anti-immigration party associated with Rupert Lowe, during a by-election that attracted national political attention because Labour selected Andy Burnham as its candidate and Reform UK also contested the seat strongly. The photograph is useful for editorial coverage of British electoral politics, populist campaigning, right-wing and hard-right political messaging, voter disillusionment, working-class communities, housing estates, post-industrial towns and the contest for support in former Labour heartland areas. The setting gives the image added documentary value: instead of a staged press conference or party rally, the scene shows political branding embedded in an everyday residential environment, with the campaign message positioned directly against a home frontage. It can illustrate stories about local political identity, doorstep campaigning, class politics, protest voting, social housing communities, estate-level canvassing, culture-war messaging and the fragmentation of the right in UK politics. The combination of readable campaign text, residential setting, by-election context and named constituency makes it relevant for news, politics, sociology, local democracy, election analysis and features on how national political movements try to present themselves as rooted in ordinary neighbourhoods. The image should be used with clear editorial context, as Restore Britain and similar movements are controversial and have been widely discussed in relation to anti-immigration and hard-right politics.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EME6K8 - June 2026, this landscape documentary photograph shows a household displaying both a Reform UK campaign flag and a Union flag outside a brick-built home on a council estate in Hindley, within the Makerfield constituency in Greater Manchester, England. The light blue Reform UK flag stands prominently in the foreground beside the front garden and footpath, while a Union flag can be seen further back near neighbouring housing, creating a layered visual record of visible political allegiance and national symbolism in an everyday residential setting. The image is useful for editorial coverage of the Makerfield by-election, local campaigning, doorstep politics, electoral behaviour, populist and right-wing political messaging, and the ways national political identities are expressed in working-class communities and post-industrial towns in North West England. Its strength lies in the ordinary street context: semi-detached housing, wheelie bins, front gardens and estate railings make the politics feel rooted in lived neighbourhood space rather than in a party conference hall or media photo call. The scene can illustrate stories about Reform UK support on housing estates, the use of flags as political signals, the growing visibility of nationalist and protest-vote sentiment, and the contest for former Labour-leaning areas during a closely watched parliamentary by-election. It also has wider relevance for features on British identity, local democracy, constituency politics, social change, class realignment and the visual language of modern campaigning. For picture buyers, the combination of readable party branding, a recognisable national flag, domestic architecture and clear geographical context makes the image suitable for news, political analysis, sociology, current affairs and commentary on the shifting electoral landscape in Greater Manchester.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EME6MX - Reform UK flag and arrow sign in a Hindley Green garden showing support for Rob Kenyon in the Makerfield by-election.. Residential garden in Hindley Green, Wigan, Greater Manchester, openly displaying Reform UK campaign material during the Makerfield by-election campaign. A pale blue Reform flag flies from a wooden pole above a circular Reform UK sign with a bold right-pointing arrow. The user-supplied wording identifies the display as support for Rob Kenyon, the Reform UK candidate in the Makerfield by-election. The political material is placed in an ordinary domestic setting, with red brick houses, garden fencing, shrubs, roses, a pavement and a quiet residential street visible behind it. The image is useful for editorial coverage of Reform UK, Rob Kenyon, the Makerfield by-election, political support in residential neighbourhoods, garden campaign displays, local democracy, doorstep politics, voter identity and street-level election campaigning. The blue flag and arrow sign provide clear campaign branding and create a strong visual message of direction, allegiance and public support. Unlike formal campaign rallies or party press events, the scene shows politics embedded in everyday household surroundings, where gardens, fences and frontages become part of the public campaign landscape. It could support articles about the visibility of Reform UK in northern communities, voter mood in Hindley Green, political competition in Wigan borough, the use of simple bold symbols in election communication, and the way residents signal party support during a contested by-election. The combination of flag, arrow sign, ordinary homes and garden planting gives the photograph strong stock-photo value for features on British elections, public opinion, populist politics, local campaign publicity, neighbourhood political expression, working-class residential areas

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EME6N4 - Large Reform UK campaign placard & St George flag, for Rob Kenyon displayed above a residential garden in Hindley, an area within the Makerfield parliamentary constituency in Greater Manchester, England. The bright blue sign carries the wording I'm voting Rob Kenyon and 18th June , alongside a candidate photograph and Reform UK branding, partly framed by garden trees and the roofline of a nearby house. The image records the street-level visibility of Reform UK during a closely watched by-election in a former Labour stronghold, where the party promoted Kenyon as a local candidate and tradesman rather than a career politician. Reform UK and several media reports described Kenyon as a plumber, and that framing was central to the party's attempt to present him as a simpleton local working-class challenger to Andy Burnham. The photograph is useful for editorial coverage of by-election campaigning, voter allegiance, right-wing populism, northern English politics, constituency-level political identity and the contest for support in post-industrial towns around Wigan. Its value is in the domestic setting: the placard is not shown at a rally, but in a garden above ordinary housing, making the campaign message part of the visual language of a neighbourhood. The scene can illustrate stories about Reform UK's appeal on housing estates, political branding in local streets, anti-establishment messaging, voter disillusionment, party competition on the right and the challenge to Labour in areas that historically returned Labour MPs. It also works as a broader image of contemporary British politics, where candidate posters, simple slogans and claims of local authenticity are used to build trust with residents. The picture should be used with clear editorial context, as Reform UK's campaign, like much hard-right and populist politics in Britain, has generated controversy over immigration rhetoric, online comments and culture-war positioning

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EMY4D5 - Campaign placard We're voting Restore Britain , mounted on a wooden stake outside a brick-built home in the Makerfield constituency, Wigan, Greater Manchester, during the June 2026 by-election campaign. The sign's original patriotic red, white and blue design is reduced to stark monochrome, making the large capital lettering, party logo and domestic brick-wall background feel more severe and confrontational. The image is useful for editorial coverage of Restore Britain, Rupert Lowe, hard-right politics, far-right campaigning, nationalist political branding, anti-establishment messaging, protest voting, working-class estates, and the fragmentation of the British right during a high-profile parliamentary contest. Restore Britain is listed by the Electoral Commission as an authorised party registered in Great Britain, while its own material frames the party around themes such as low tax, small government, secure borders, national pride, traditional Christian principles, free speech and direct democracy. Political reporting has described Restore Britain as right-wing to far-right and as a rival force competing with Reform UK for voters on the nationalist and populist right. In the context of Makerfield, the placard has wider editorial value because the contest attracted national attention around Labour's Andy Burnham, Reform UK's Robert Kenyon, and the possibility that Restore Britain could split or reshape the right-wing vote. The close crop, visible screw, wooden post, house doorway edge and brickwork give the picture a local, doorstep-democracy quality, showing how national political movements appear in ordinary residential streets. It could illustrate articles on election messaging, public displays of party support, culture-war politics, voter disillusionment, political identity, devolution, former Labour heartlands, and the visual language of UK by-elections in 2026.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJYKFP - Editorial photograph shows two Reform UK campaign signs in a garden off Bolton Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, Greater Manchester, during the June 2026 Makerfield by-election campaign. The main teal poster reads ˜MAKERFIELD NEEDS REFORM' in large white lettering, while a smaller round Reform UK sign is visible to the left, partly tucked behind the hedge. The scene was photographed in daylight under a bright but slightly overcast sky, with shrubs, trees, a low wall and nearby homes giving the image a stock-photo/gotonysmith-Residential.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>residential doorstep politics feel rather than a formal rally setting. The by-election was due on 18 June 2026 after Josh Simons resigned as Labour MP, with ITV reporting that he stood down so Andy Burnham could seek a return to Westminster. Reform UK selected Robert Kenyon, listed by WhoCanIVoteFor as its 2026 parliamentary by-election candidate and as an elected Wigan councillor in Bryn with Ashton-in-Makerfield North. The contest attracted national attention because Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, was attempting to move from regional leadership back into Parliament, while Reform UK under Nigel Farage said it would put major effort into the seat. The House of Commons Library also noted that Burnham could stand while mayor, but would be disqualified from the mayoralty if elected as an MP. This image can illustrate Reform UK campaigning, Nigel Farage's party strategy, Labour versus Reform, red wall politics, voter disillusionment, populist messaging, immigration-focused politics, local democracy, tactical voting, garden signs and the changing political map in post-industrial northern constituencies. For stock buyers, the value lies in the double Reform UK signage, the clear Makerfield wording, the Bolton Road location and the ordinary residential backdrop, a compact shorthand for the challenge facing Labour where local identity, national party pressure and anti-establishment campaigning met on the streets of Ashton-in-Makerfield.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJYKGC - Documentary editorial photograph shows a blue Reform UK roundel sign mounted on a wooden post in a large garden off Bolton Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, Greater Manchester, during the 2026 Makerfield by-election campaign. The sign uses Reform UK's simple white arrow logo and black lettering against a bright blue background, standing above a green hedge with trees, sky and a glimpse of suburban housing behind it. The image was taken in daylight under a bright, lightly clouded sky, giving the scene a calm residential feel while still carrying a sharp political message. Reform UK grew out of the Brexit Party associated with Nigel Farage, and the party's modern campaign themes have focused heavily on anti-establishment politics, immigration, borders, public services and voter anger with the main parties. In Makerfield, the by-election was due on 18 June 2026 after stock-photo/gotonysmith-Labour.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>Labour MP Josh Simons stood down, opening the way for Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, to contest the seat for Labour. Reform UK selected Robert Kenyon, reported as a local plumber and army reservist, creating a high-profile Labour versus Reform contest in a long-standing Labour heartland. This close-up image is useful for illustrating Reform UK campaigning, right-wing populism, red wall politics, northern voter disillusionment, Labour heartlands, by-elections, political realignment, tactical voting, doorstep politics and the visibility of party support in private gardens. For stock buyers, the value lies in the uncluttered Reform UK branding, the ordinary garden setting and the precise connection to a nationally watched parliamentary contest. It works as a simple but powerful visual shorthand for the attempt by Nigel Farage's party to turn local dissatisfaction in post-industrial Greater Manchester into votes, and for the pressure facing Labour in places where political loyalty can no longer be taken for granted.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJYKH0 - Tall vertical version of editorial photograph shows two rival political signs in a front garden setting in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, Greater Manchester, during the June 2026 Makerfield by-election campaign. In the foreground, a red Labour ˜VOTE ANDY FOR US' poster shows a cartoon likeness of Andy Burnham in his familiar black top and glasses, while a blue Reform UK roundel sign is visible just behind the hedge. The two signs create a compact visual contest between Burnham, the high-profile Mayor of Greater Manchester, and Reform UK candidate Robert Kenyon, reported as a local plumber and army reservist. The image was taken in daylight under a cloudy North West England sky, with terraced and semi-detached houses, a brick wall, hedges and a quiet suburban road giving the scene a strongly local, doorstep politics feel. Burnham is often nicknamed the ˜King of the North' in political and media commentary, reflecting his regional profile since becoming Mayor of Greater Manchester in 2017 and winning further mayoral terms in 2021 and 2024. The Makerfield by-election was due on 18 June 2026 and drew national attention because Burnham's possible return to Westminster was linked with Labour's future direction and speculation about Sir Keir Starmer's leadership. Reform UK's challenge added anstock-photo/gotonysmith-Other.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>other layer, with Kenyon's candidacy attracting scrutiny over past social media posts and debate about the party's appeal in Labour heartlands. This image is useful for stories about Labour campaigning, Reform UK pressure, red wall politics, northern identity, voter choice, by-elections, populism, political branding, tactical voting and the everyday visibility of party loyalty in residential streets. For stock buyers, its strength is the juxtaposition of two competing signs: one personalised around Burnham's recognisable cartoon image, the other using Reform UK's simple directional branding, both bidding for attention before a closely watched parliamentary contest in Makerfield.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJYKJC - Documentary editorial photograph shows a teal Reform UK campaign poster on Bolton Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, Greater Manchester, during the June 2026 Makerfield by-election campaign. The sign reads ˜MAKERFIELD NEEDS REFORM' in large white lettering, with Reform UK's circular arrow logo forming part of the word ˜REFORM'. It is mounted on a wooden post above a hedge, with off licence, convenience store and takeaway signs visible along the street behind it. The picture was taken in daylight under mixed sun and cloud, with dappled shadow across the poster and a local shopping parade giving the scene a direct, everyday campaign feel. The image places Reform UK's national message into a recognisable high street setting, where retail decline, cost of living, immigration, public services and community identity can become part of doorstep political debate. The Makerfield by-election, due on 18 June 2026, drew national attention because stock-photo/gotonysmith-Labour.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>Labour selected Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, while Reform UK selected Robert Kenyon, reported as a local plumber and army reservist. Coverage described Kenyon as a prominent challenger and reported controversy over earlier online posts attributed to him, including comments on Brexit, Covid and women. Those claims should be treated as reported allegations unless directly verified from primary material. Burnham's mayoral record is often associated with Greater Manchester's Bee Network, including bus franchising and integrated transport. Reform UK's national politics under Nigel Farage has strongly emphasised immigration and ˜stop the boats' messaging. For stock buyers, this image provides a clear visual shorthand for Reform UK campaigning in a Labour heartland, the contest between local and national political narratives, and the way a by-election can turn an ordinary Ashton-in-Makerfield street into a stage for wider arguments about populism, transport, public services, borders, leadership and voter trust.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJYKKP - Documentary editorial photograph shows a small Reform UK ˜VOTE REFORM UK 18TH JUNE' leaflet displayed discreetly in the front window of a suburban red-brick house in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, Greater Manchester. The white-framed window, domestic ornaments, reflections, brickwork and overhanging leaves give the image an intimate residential setting, quite different from the larger roadside banners and garden placards seen elsewhere in the Makerfield by-election campaign. The image was taken in daylight under a bright but cloudy sky, and the small blue leaflet is a subtle but clear sign of Reform UK support inside an ordinary home. The Makerfield by-election was confirmed for 18 June 2026 after Labour MP Josh Simons stood down, with Politico and ITV reporting that the move allowed Andy Burnham to seek a return to stock-photo/gotonysmith-Westminster.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>Westminster. Burnham is the Mayor of Greater Manchester, first elected in 2017 and re-elected in 2021 and 2024, and is often nicknamed the ˜King of the North' because of his strong regional profile. Reform UK's candidate Robert Kenyon was reported by the Guardian as a local plumber and army reservist, while Nigel Farage said Reform would put major effort into the contest. This image can illustrate Reform UK campaigning, window posters, private voter support, Labour versus Reform, red wall politics, political realignment, populist messaging, local democracy, parliamentary by-elections, tactical voting and the contest for working-class support in a traditional Labour area. It also speaks to the quieter side of election campaigning, where political allegiance is shown not at a rally or hustings but through a modest sign placed behind glass. For stock buyers, the value lies in the small scale of the leaflet, the domestic setting and the link to a nationally watched contest in which Burnham's Westminster ambitions, Kenyon's anti-establishment appeal and Farage's Reform UK strategy all met on Ashton-in-Makerfield streets.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJYKM2 - Editorial photograph shows a blue Reform UK roundel sign fixed in a front garden on an ordinary red-brick stock-photo/gotonysmith-Residential.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>residential street in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, Greater Manchester, during the 2026 Makerfield by-election campaign. The sign uses Reform UK's simple white arrow branding, pointing forward against a blue background, with traditional terraced houses, brick walls, railings, chimney stacks, overhead wires and a cloudy North West England sky behind it. The image has strong street-level political value because it places a national right-wing populist party message into a local working-class housing setting. Reform UK grew out of the Brexit Party, the vehicle associated with Nigel Farage, and Britannica describes Farage as having launched the Brexit Party in 2019 before rebranding it as Reform UK in 2021. The Makerfield by-election was scheduled for 18 June 2026 after Labour MP Josh Simons stood down, creating a nationally watched contest between Andy Burnham for Labour and Robert Kenyon for Reform UK. Kenyon was reported as a local plumber and army reservist, while Burnham is the high-profile Mayor of Greater Manchester. Reform UK's campaign sought to mobilise voters around anti-establishment themes, immigration, borders and public dissatisfaction, while Labour presented Burnham as a recognised regional figure with a record linked to growth, devolution and the Bee Network transport programme. This image can illustrate Reform UK campaigning, Brexit legacy politics, Labour heartlands, red wall constituencies, working-class voter identity, political realignment, populism, immigration messaging, tactical voting, local democracy and public trust in northern England. For stock buyers, the strength lies in the contrast between the crisp campaign roundel and the everyday terrace backdrop, a compact visual shorthand for how the Makerfield contest turned ordinary residential streets into visible markers of national political change.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJYKNR - Documentary editorial photograph shows a red Labour ˜Vote Andy For Us' campaign poster in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, Greater Manchester, during the June 2026 Makerfield by-election campaign. The sign uses bold red, white and yellow colours associated with Labour campaign branding and asks local voters to back Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester. Burnham has often been described in media and political commentary as the ˜King of the North', a nickname reflecting his high public profile across Greater Manchester and the wider North of England. Official Greater Manchester sources state that he was first elected mayor in 2017 and then re-elected in 2021 and 2024. The by-election became a nationally watched contest because Burnham's route back to Westminster was linked in reporting with wider speculation about Labour's future direction under Sir Keir Starmer. The Makerfield race was not simply Labour against one challenger. The Green Party selected Sarah Wakefield, raising questions in coverage about whether the progressive or left-leaning vote could be split, while Reform UK selected Robert Kenyon, reported as a local plumber and army reservist, whose campaign attracted scrutiny over past social media posts. Current polling and reporting should be treated cautiously, as by-election campaigns can move quickly, but Survation placed Burnham and Kenyon close at the start of the campaign, with smaller parties also competing for attention. This photograph can illustrate Labour campaigning, Green Party pressure, Reform UK challenge, tactical voting, red wall politics, northern identity, candidate branding, local democracy, parliamentary by-elections and Westminster leadership speculation. For stock buyers, the value is the readable slogan and clear local political context: an ordinary Ashton-in-Makerfield street carrying a high-profile election message at the point where local voter concerns, national party tensions and mayoral politics all meet.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJYKP0 - This documentary editorial photograph shows a large yellow Labour campaign centre banner tied to green metal railings at Stubshaw Cross Community and Sports Club, off Bolton Road in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, Greater Manchester. The bold red wording reads LABOUR CAMPAIGN CENTRE , making the image a clear record of Labour's visible organisation during Andy Burnham's Makerfield by-election campaign. The picture was taken in daylight under a bright but cloudy sky, with grass, trees and roadside railings placing the banner in an everyday community setting rather than a polished national press backdrop. Burnham is the Mayor of Greater Manchester and Labour's candidate for Makerfield, a constituency that includes Ashton-in-Makerfield and parts of Wigan. The by-election has attracted national attention because it follows Josh Simons standing aside and because Burnham's possible return to Westminster has been linked in reporting with wider debate about Labour's future direction under Sir Keir Starmer. Reform UK is also central to the contest, with Robert Kenyon, reported as a local plumber and army reservist, standing as its candidate. Several outlets have reported controversy over past social media posts linked to Kenyon, including alleged sexist, crude and anti-abortion comments, making the race useful for illustrating scrutiny of candidate conduct as well as the rise of Reform UK in former Labour heartlands. This image can support features on by-elections, Labour campaigning, campaign headquarters, party machines, Reform UK pressure, northern politics, political realignment, working-class voters, local democracy, red wall seats, mayoral politics and Westminster leadership speculation. For stock image buyers, the value lies in the readable sign, precise Wigan location and strong visual connection between an ordinary community club and a nationally watched contest where local voters, party loyalty, populist challenge and Labour's internal tensions all meet.

The banner reads ˜VOTE ANDY FOR US' in bold white and yellow lettering and includes a cartoon-style portrait of Andy Burnham, making the image instantly recognisable as a piece of personalised Labour election branding. The picture was taken in daylight under a bright but slightly overcast sky, with the fence, roadway, parked vehicles and background buildings giving it the practical feel of a local campaign base rather than a polished studio setting. Burnham is the Mayor of Greater Manchester, not the mayor of Manchester city, and official sources note that he was first elected in 2017 and then re-elected in 2021 and 2024, making him one of the best-known regional political figures in England. The Makerfield by-election, due on 18 June 2026, attracted national attention because Burnham's attempted return to Westminster was widely seen as politically significant for Labour, while Reform UK also mounted a strong challenge through candidate Robert Kenyon. This image is useful for illustrating stories about Labour campaigning, by-elections, party branding, northern politics, local democracy, red wall seats, Reform UK pressure, political realignment and the public profile of metro mayors. For stock image buyers, the value lies in the readable slogan, the strong red colour palette, the recognisable cartoon likeness with spectacles, and the clear connection to a specific and newsworthy contest in Ashton-in-Makerfield. It works well as a visual shorthand for Burnham's local support operation, Labour's effort to mobilise voters in a traditional stronghold, and the way modern campaign imagery blends personal branding with constituency-level street politics.

The image was taken in daylight under a cloudy, changeable sky, giving the scene a realistic North West England by-election feel rather than a staged press image. The banner uses bold white and yellow lettering beside a cartoon-style portrait of Andy Burnham in his familiar spectacles, making the sign immediately recognisable as personalised campaign branding. Burnham is the Mayor of Greater Manchester, first elected in 2017 and re-elected in 2021 and 2024, and his attempt to win the Makerfield seat in 2026 turned a local parliamentary by-election into a contest with wider national political interest. The House of Commons Library noted that he could stand for Parliament while still mayor, but would be disqualified from the mayoralty if elected as an MP. The image can illustrate Labour campaigning, campaign headquarters, doorstep politics, local party organisation, by-election publicity, northern politics, red wall seats, mayoral politics, political branding and Westminster leadership speculation. It is also useful for coverage of Reform UK pressure on Labour in traditional heartland areas, voter mobilisation in Wigan, and the changing relationship between local constituency campaigns and national political narratives. For stock buyers, the strength is the readable slogan, precise Ashton-in-Makerfield location, visible campaign office context, strong red Labour colour scheme and recognisable cartoon likeness, all combining to show how a national political story was fought through ordinary street-level campaign activity in Greater Manchester.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EKDAJ1 - A blue Makerfield Needs Reform campaign board mounted in a hedge beside a local convenience store and off-licence in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Greater Manchester. The shop signs in the background advertise an off-licence open from 6am to 2am, giving the picture a strong everyday high-street and neighbourhood retail setting rather than a staged Westminster political scene. The image is useful for editorial coverage of Reform UK campaigning, the Makerfield by-election, Rob Kenyon or Robert Kenyon, Brexit politics, immigration messaging, stop the boats rhetoric, right-wing populism, anti-establishment campaigning and the way national political arguments appear in ordinary northern communities. Robert Francis Kenyon is listed by Wigan Council as a Reform UK councillor for Bryn with Ashton-in-Makerfield North, and election records also show him as Reform UK's candidate for the Makerfield parliamentary by-election. Makerfield has been a historically Labour-held constituency, but recent reporting has described voter frustration, local disillusionment and Reform UK pressure in the area. The visible mix of hedge, campaign board, off-licence, convenience retail and residential-edge townscape makes the photograph suitable for articles about local democracy, working-class voters, Red Wall politics, post-Brexit realignment, high-street decline, community change, party branding, opposition politics and Britain's polarised debate on migration and borders. Care is needed with captioning: the image records Reform UK campaign material in a public street setting, but it does not by itself prove the views of any named shopkeeper, resident or passer-by. The sunny daylight, shallow depth of field and readable signage make the placard stand out as a clear editorial visual for UK politics, northern by-elections, populist campaigning, convenience-store neighbourhoods and the practical reality of electioneering away from national media stages.

The image is useful for editorial coverage of Labour Party campaigning, local by-elections, constituency organisation, political volunteers, doorstep canvassing, Red Wall politics, northern voter mobilisation and the continuing battle for working-class support in towns across Greater Manchester and the wider North West of England. Ashton-in-Makerfield sits within the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan and the Makerfield parliamentary constituency, an area long associated with Labour politics, industrial heritage, former mining communities, terraced streets, commuter links and changing electoral pressures. The banner's bold typography, high-visibility colours and temporary outdoor placement make the image a strong visual shorthand for campaign headquarters, local party infrastructure, election day operations, canvassing bases and party efforts to project organisation and momentum. Keir Starmer is Labour leader and Prime Minister, while Andy Burnham is the Mayor of Greater Manchester, giving the image broader relevance for stories about the Labour government, Greater Manchester politics, mayoral influence, party strategy, northern devolution, local campaigning and political change up north. It could also support features on public trust, voter fatigue, left-of-centre politics, party branding, community venues used for campaigns, civic participation and the sometimes grim, practical reality of electioneering away from Westminster. The scene includes shoppers and pedestrians moving past the covered arcade entrance, wet paving, historic red-brick architecture and the distinctive glass and metal canopy of the Victoria Quarter, one of the best-known shopping destinations in Leeds. The image captures the contrast between heritage retail architecture and modern event branding, suggesting the city's role as a regional centre for shopping, leisure, commercial property and regeneration. Victoria Quarter is part of Victoria Leeds and is known for its restored arcades, premium shops, restaurants and covered pedestrian spaces. The visible UKREiiF message connects the location with the UK Real Estate Investment and Infrastructure Forum, a major property, regeneration and infrastructure gathering held in Leeds, while the Redical branding reflects the retail property ownership and destination marketing context. The overcast light, damp street surface and coats on pedestrians suggest a cool spring or autumn day, typical of a busy Northern city centre. Strong concepts include Leeds shopping, Victoria Quarter, Victoria Leeds, retail economy, property investment, business tourism, city branding, urban development, high street recovery, destination retail, pedestrianised streets, commercial property, regeneration, architecture, shoppers, tourism and Yorkshire city life. The image is commercially useful for editorial coverage of childcare, nursery staffing, early years education, recruitment shortages, working parents and the cost of childcare in England. Kids Planet Appleton Thorn is listed by Ofsted at Thorn House, Green Lane, Appleton, Warrington, WA4 5NS, and the operator describes the nursery as set in the heart of Appleton Thorn with traditional building features and outdoor space. The photograph links a local Cheshire nursery setting with wider national debates about funded childcare places, Tax-Free Childcare, nursery capacity, childcare affordability and the pressure on providers to recruit and retain qualified early years staff. In England, eligible working parents may be able to receive funded childcare support, including 30 hours a week for children aged 9 months to 4 years, while Tax-Free Childcare can help eligible families pay approved providers. The word free is often used politically and in media coverage, but funded childcare is more precise because eligibility rules, provider charges, consumables, hours and local availability can all affect what parents actually pay. The overcast daylight, damp-looking paving and green roadside setting give the image an everyday suburban feel, making it suitable for news, policy, education, family finance and labour market stories. It can illustrate nursery recruitment campaigns, childcare benefits, government support, parental employment, local jobs, early years workforce pressures, private nursery provision and the practical reality behind childcare promises.

The poster advertises a planned demonstration at Dáil Éireann and describes the housing situation as an emergency, reflecting widespread public concern over housing supply, affordability, and homelessness in Ireland.
The sign features bold red and yellow typography designed for high visibility in an urban environment and references organised protest activity involving speeches, music, and public participation. Such posters are a common feature of Dublin's streetscape during periods of heightened political debate and social mobilisation.
Ireland has experienced sustained pressure on housing availability in recent years, particularly in major cities such as Dublin, leading to regular protests, policy discussions, and public campaigns focused on housing provision and reform. Temporary street posters like this document how political messaging is communicated at ground level in public spaces.

The image is useful for editorial coverage of Tenerife tourism, Spanish Christmas customs, Canary Islands festivals, family events, winter sun holidays, cultural tourism, local council celebrations and the blending of religious tradition, civic festivity and visitor marketing in resort towns. Los Cristianos is part of the municipality of Arona and is a major holiday destination near Playa de las Americas and Costa Adeje, so bilingual event advertising helps present local customs to tourists as well as residents. Guide listings for recent years describe the Los Cristianos parade as the Grand Parade of Their Majesties the Three Wise Men from the East, travelling from Juan Carlos I Avenue towards the exterior of the Los Cristianos Cultural Centre. The photograph also works for stories about how Spanish Christmas continues beyond 25 December, with the Reyes Magos celebrations marking the emotional high point for many children. The illustrated camels, royal figures, stars and warm colours give the display a festive, family-friendly feel, while the white building and bright daylight place it clearly in a subtropical Canarian resort setting rather than mainland winter Spain. The location is Kirkgate, Leeds, England, LS2 7HN. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains ornate Victorian market architecture, signage, stall fronts and the texture of a working city centre shopping hall. Leeds Kirkgate Market is one of the city's great Victorian retail landmarks and is closely associated with the birth of Marks and Spencer, after Michael Marks began trading his Penny Bazaar in Leeds in 1884. That background gives the scene wider value for stories on independent markets, national chains with local origins, urban heritage, shopping habits and the tension between traditional retail and modern redevelopment. It would suit editorial use on shopping, retail change, independent traders, high-street survival, tourism, local economies, consumer habits and the visual identity of British town and city centres. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T2845F - Taken on 07 Oct 2023, this photograph shows Leeds city Kirkgate markets, Leeds Kirkgate Market, Kirkgate, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, UK, LS2 7HN. Searchable related phrases include Leeds, Leeds Kirkgate Market, Kirkgate, market, Victorian, markets, shopping, stalls, stall, front, Yorkshire, LS2, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EFHRPN - White cloth protest banner reading Rashford 1 Boris 0 , photographed in connection with Manchester United supporter culture at Old Trafford, Manchester, during the Covid lockdown period. The simple hand-painted design, with Rashford sprayed in red and Boris in black, refers to Marcus Rashford's high-profile campaign on child food poverty, free school meal vouchers, holiday hunger and support for families relying on foodbanks. The scoreline format turns a political dispute into football language, presenting the Manchester United and England forward as the clear winner over Boris Johnson's government after pressure led to a policy reversal on free school meals support. The image works strongly as an editorial illustration of footballers using public platforms for social justice, the politics of austerity and poverty, pandemic-era hardship, school meal provision, food insecurity, youth welfare and the wider role of Premier League players beyond sport. It also captures the visual language of fan protest: cheap fabric, spray paint, improvised lettering, terrace humour and a blunt message designed to be seen quickly around a stadium or matchday setting. The banner links Old Trafford, Manchester United, community activism and national politics at a moment when Covid-19 exposed inequality across the UK. The visible words Rashford , Boris and the score 1 0 make the image commercially useful for stories about Marcus Rashford, Boris Johnson, lockdown Britain, free school meals, foodbank use, child poverty, political accountability, football activism, public campaigning, Conservative government policy, Premier League influence, Manchester identity and working-class social conscience. The plain indoor or wall-mounted setting, muted light and soft folds in the fabric give the photograph a raw documentary feel rather than a polished advertising look, making it suitable for news, education, charity, politics, sport, poverty and social history uses.

In 2023 it is the 1100th anniversary of Thelwall being declared a ˜city'. The meeting will take place at the Royal British Legion, doors opening at 7pm for the meeting to start at 7.30. Representatives and individual members of all village organisations will be very welcome.
We've been looking back at the way the village came together to celebrate 1000 years in 1923 and 1050 years in 1973. In 1923, Thelwall's celebrations helped to fund a new war memorial (Bell Lane), dedicated in 1925. So successful was the event that the pub was drunk dry and the caterers ran out of food and drinks. In May 1973, Thelwall Youth and Community Association organised Festival 1050 “ a four day event with a folk festival, a piano recital by Stephen Hough, an arts and crafts exhibition in the school and a procession that saw Miss Thelwall (Carol Moss) brought across the Manchester Ship Canal by the ferry boat where she was met by the Thelwall Rose Queen (Julie Lager) to a fanfare. They then joined a procession of vintage cars round the village.
If you have any memorabilia, photos, films or memories from these events, we would like to hear from you. You can email thelwallhistorygroup@gmail.com

It all started when it was realised that Victoria Primary School in Newhaven on the northern outskirts of Edinburgh needed to expand and the decision was taken to build a new school.
Now we're almost three years down the line and the dream of converting the site containing the Victorian building into a brand new intergenerational centre for the whole community to enjoy, is nearing completion.
We've consulted with the community to find out what they want.
We've set up a SCIO, The Heart of Newhaven Community SCIO SCO49919 a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation. Constitution is here.
We have a board of trustees. We have members who will take the decisions moving into the future. See your board and consultants here.
We've passed the Community Asset Transfer test with Edinburgh City Council and been given permission to purchase the site. The Scottish Land fund have given us the Funds to buy the building.
NEWHAVEN IS A COMMUNITY WITH A HEART
Pulsating with energy is Victoria Primary School, full of children who in 2022 moved across Lindsay Road to a new site to pursue dreams for the future.
This iconic building and its annexe deserve be an asset for the whole community of Newhaven “young and old, long-time residents and those newly moved here: everybody who wants to have a place to enjoy activities that can't yet find a space in Newhaven.
Newhaven has a distinct identity.
Its rapidly increasing population and range of activities is crying out for a focal point to express our sense of community life, especially to help those in greatest need of care and well-being.
The Heart of Newhaven was chosen as a name for the proposed centre, and the campaign to keep this building for the community, because:
it is in the centre of 'Greater Newhaven' (old and new combined)
because a community space for everyone is what keeps the community heart in Newhaven for the future.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R9J0J1 - A key worker, critical worker or essential worker is a public-sector or private-sector employee who is considered to provide an essential service. The term has been used[when?] in the United Kingdom in the context of workers who may find it difficult to buy property in the area where they work. The term was also used by the UK government during announcements regarding school shutdowns invoked in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to indicate parents whose occupations entitled them to continue sending their children to schools which were otherwise shut down by government policy, as well as teachers and LSAs at those schools.
A key worker is a public sector or private sector employee who is considered to provide an essential service.
Key workers jobs that cannot be done remotely:-
Energy. Many of the jobs in this field, which includes mining and oil extraction, cannot be done remotely.
First responders. These are the people communities depend on in emergencies, such as paramedics, firefighters and police.
Education and child care. Making sure children can grow academically even during a pandemic means vaccinating teachers, their support staff, and daycare employees.
Agriculture and food production. Many of the outbreaks at the onset of the pandemic were in meatpacking facilities and other food-processing plants.
Critical retail. (i.e. grocery stores, hardware stores, auto mechanics etc.). Keeping supermarket employees safe makes it possible for others to stay fed while restaurants are temporarily shut down.
Critical trades. (i.e. construction workers, electricians, plumbers, etc.)
Manufacturing. These jobs (producing goods) cannot be done remotely.
Corrections workers. Prisons are the types of closed facilities where the coronavirus can spread quickly.
Postal Service workers. This group makes sure vital packages get delivered, along with providing other key services.
Public transit workers.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RC3CDJ - Unionist boycott ˜will not alter police reform' - more at https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/arid-30021664.html
Police reform in Northern Ireland will not be altered if unionists boycott the board overseeing the changes, the British Government insisted today.
A Northern Ireland Office spokesman rejected claims from the anti-Good Friday Agreement Democratic Unionists that unionists could secure a better policing plan if they united and opposed the current proposals.
As the Rev Ian Paisley's party met at Stormont to consider its response to the Government's plan, the NIO said the package was ''non-negotiable''.
''The Government's position was spelt out very clearly by the Secretary of State on Tuesday,'' a spokesman said.
''The implementation plan is non-negotiable. No rethink will take place. This is the plan.''
The NIO spokesman was responding to DUP deputy leader Peter Robinson's claim that if David Trimble's Ulster Unionists agreed to join them in withholding support for the plan, the reforms could not go ahead.
Signalling his party would not take its seats on the Policing Board if the UUP did not nominate representatives, he claimed: ˜˜At the meeting we held recently with John Reid, he indicated the Government could not proceed with the plan if he could not get, on the one hand the support of either the SDLP, Sinn Fein or both, and on the other, the UUP, DUP or both.
˜˜That was the criteria operated the last time around. The Government's plans were stopped because neither the SDLP nor Sinn Fein would support it and as a result the reforms were made much more acceptable to nationalists in the SDLP.
˜˜The logical argument, therefore, is if unionists do not support this implementation plan, then it cannot succeed. The Government will have to amend it to make it more acceptable to unionists and go back to negotiations.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64RFH - This image shows a promotional banner advertising Lancaster's seasonal summer markets, strung across a city centre street and framed by rows of colourful triangular bunting. The banner announces a summer market date and opening times, celebrating local traders, seasonal produce, and community activity in the heart of the city.
Seasonal markets play an important role in Lancaster's civic and economic life, supporting independent businesses, encouraging footfall, and creating a festival atmosphere within the historic urban environment. The bunting and signage transform the street into a shared public space, signalling celebration, sociability, and local pride.
Historic stone buildings provide a strong architectural backdrop, reinforcing Lancaster's identity as a traditional English city with a well-preserved townscape. The clear blue sky and bright colours emphasise the summery character of the event and the positive, welcoming tone of the promotion.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited for editorial use covering UK market culture, town-centre regeneration, community events, local economies, and the visual language of civic celebration in English towns and cities.

Warrington Borough Council developed and published their Local Plan in 2014 based on population growth statistics at that time, these figures are now substantially out of date. 55 Councils across the UK have now abandoned their local plans as The Homes & Communities Agency confirmed that housing targets are a guide and not mandatory. Warrington Borough Councils plan includes removing large areas of Greenbelt Land all over the Borough for housing developments and business parks.
All areas will be affected
Appleton, Appleton Thorn, Stretton, Grappenhall, Thelwall, Lymm, Croft and Culcheth for housing developments. New roads will be punched through existing areas to access the new housing estates, for example through Grappenhall Sports Club across the Bridgewater Canal, affecting Stockton Heath and Stockton Lane. Another road is planned across fields at the back of Stretton towards the M56.
These areas are all currently green fields, sports fields and wildlife habitats.
All of these areas have new housing stock built in the last 10 years, surely enough Greenbelt has been lost already. There are enough brownfield sites across Warrington for thousands of houses without having to dig up Greenbelt. The Greenbelt areas are the 'Green Lungs' of Warrington, the trees and plants store carbon and clean the air we breathe. The people of Warrington are now saying 'NO' to losing any more Greenbelt. Our elected representatives need to listen to us. During Covid we all learned how important fresh air and open space is to our survival.

The Whitechapel Centre is Liverpool's leading homeless charity, helping those living without a home. Liverpool Cathedral is a vibrant, active place that helps the people of the city in many ways through schools, family workshops, foodbanks and community markets, volunteering, or just being a safe place to keep warm. Together, we are working really hard to make sure everyone in Liverpool can have a place to call home and live to their full potential. Unfortunately, more and more people need our help each year.

We know that many people want to help those they see sleeping on the streets or who are struggling but it can be difficult to know the best way to help. By taking part in the Cathedral Sleepout and raising as much money as possible, you'll enable us to give people food, find them a home and teach them new skills.
‹
The Cathedral Sleepout is a very rare opportunity to sleep inside the fantastic Liverpool Cathedral. The Sleepout doesn't compare to sleeping outside on the streets, but we want to help people understand how difficult it might be when you don't have a place to go.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PPDK - Holy Trinity Church is in the centre of the town of Warrington, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Liverpool, the archdeaconry of Warrington and the deanery of Warrington.
History
A chapel of ease known as Trinity Chapel was built on the site in 1708 to relieve pressure on the parish church of St Elphin's. It was built as an oratory by Peter Legh of Lyme Park. By the 1750s the chapel was too small for its congregation and in 1758 subscriptions were raised to build a new church, which was consecrated in 1760. The architecture is in the style of James Gibbs, but he was ill at the time the church was built and it is thought it was designed by one of Gibbs' associates. In 1862 a west clock tower was added which was designed by W. P. Coxon, the Borough Surveyor
the tower belongs to the town rather than to the church. In 1974 the south aisle was re-designed to form the Garven Room, a servery, a vestry and toilets. By the 1970s the roof had been damaged by wet and dry rot, woodworm and death watch beetle and was replaced in 1978“79. By 1990 the pipe organ was beyond repair and it has been replaced by a Makin electronic organ. In 1988 the west end was remodelled, forming a lobby. In 1997 the east end was reordered, adding a room and extending the sanctuary area. In 1999 the clock was refurbished by Warrington Borough Council as a Millennium project.
Architecture
Exterior
The church is built in Georgian style. Its front is constructed in sandstone, and the rear in brick with stone dressings. The stonework at the front is rusticated. The front aspect is in four stages
at the base is a rusticated plinth, above which is a tier of windows with a Doric doorcase at the west of the front. Then comes an upper tier of windows with Ionic pilasters and at the top a cornice and a plain parapet. In the east wall is a Palladian window.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AERR9Y - The St George's Tron Church, in Glasgow, Scotland, is a Church of Scotland church in the city centre, located in Nelson Mandela Place, previously known as St George's Place, fronting Buchanan Street at West George Street, along from Queen Street Station. It should not be confused with the 17th-century Tron Church, which lies to the south-west on Trongate and was redeveloped in the 1980s as the Tron Theatre. Located right on the busiest shopping street in Scotland (Buchanan Street), the building is a significant presence, and the oldest in the area. It stands as a terminating vista for West George Street.
The church opened in 1808, originally as St. George's Parish Church, with the original congregation originating from the Wynd Church in the Merchant City near to the Trongate. In 1815 Thomas Chalmers, later to be the leader of the evangelical party in the disruption of 1843, became minister of the church
The building, which was commissioned by the City Fathers was designed by William Stark, was opened in 1808, originally as St. George's Parish Church

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XNE9 - A credit union is a member-owned nonprofit cooperative financial institution.
Credit unions may offer financial services as commercial banks such as share accounts (savings accounts), share draft accounts (cheque accounts), credit cards, credit, share term certificates (certificates of deposit), and online banking. Normally, only a member of a credit union may deposit or borrow money. In several African countries, credit unions are commonly referred to as SACCOs (Savings and Credit Co-Operatives).
Worldwide, credit union systems vary significantly in their total assets and average institution asset size, ranging from volunteer operations with a handful of members to institutions with hundreds of thousands of members and assets worth billions of US dollars. In 2018, the number of members in credit unions worldwide was 375 million, with over 100 million members having been added since 2016.
Leading up to the financial crisis of 2007“2008, commercial banks engaged in approximately five times more subprime lending relative to credit unions and were two and a half times more likely to fail during the crisis. American credit unions more than doubled lending to small businesses between 2008 and 2016, from $30 billion to $60 billion, while lending to small businesses overall during the same period declined by around $100 billion. In the US, public trust in credit unions stands at 60%, compared to 30% for big banks. Furthermore, small businesses are 80% more likely to be satisfied by a credit union than with a big bank.
Natural-person credit unions (also called retail credit unions or consumer credit unions) serve individuals, as distinguished from corporate credit unions, which serve other credit unions

The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has revealed a significant increase in houses planned for the Green Belt, and yet most of these houses will be unaffordable to those who need them.
Based on local and city-regional planning policies and new data from planning consultants Glenigan, CPRE's annual Green Belt Under Siege report shows that more than 70% of houses proposed for development are not expected to be ˜affordable'. It also demonstrates that just 16% of houses built on Green Belt land since 2009 outside local plans were classed as ˜affordable'.
In total, 425,000 houses are now planned for Green Belt land. This is an increase of 54% on March 2016, and the biggest year-on-year increase in building proposed in the Green Belt for two decades. Green Belt in the North West, West Midlands and South East is under particular pressure.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RKMMAH - Brighton is a seaside resort on the south coast of England that is part of the city of Brighton and Hove, located 47 miles (76 km) south of London.
Brighton's location has made it a popular destination for tourists, renowned for its diverse communities, quirky shopping areas, large cultural, music and arts scene and its large LGBT population, leading to its recognition as the unofficial gay capital of the UK. Brighton attracted 7.5 million day visitors in 2015/16 and 4.9 million overnight visitors, and is the most popular seaside destination in the UK for overseas tourists. Brighton has also been called the UK's hippest city, and the happiest place to live in the UK
In 1985, the Borough Council described three myths about Brighton's economy. Common beliefs were that most of the working population commuted to London every day
that tourism provided most of Brighton's jobs and income
or that the borough's residents were composed entirely of wealthy theatricals and retired businesspeople rather than workers. Brighton has been an important centre for commerce and employment since the 18th century. It is home to several major companies, some of which employ thousands of people locally
as a retail centre it is of regional importance
creative, digital and new media businesses are increasingly significant
and, although Brighton was never a major industrial centre, its railway works contributed to Britain's rail industry in the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly in the manufacture of steam locomotives.
Since the amalgamation of Brighton and Hove, economic and retail data has been produced at a citywide level only. Examples of statistics include: Brighton and Hove's tourism industry contributes £380m to the economy and employs 20,000 people directly or indirectly
the city has 9,600 registered companies
and a 2001 report identified it as one of five supercities for the future. In the past couple of years tourists to Brighton and Hove have fallen.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXR69 - LGBT Warrington is organised by LGBT members who are all volunteers. The group has built great relationships with partners, which include the Council, police, health and local businesses.
They are here to help and welcome anyone who would like to join us to stamp out the stigma people may have on the LGBT community.
The group offers support to those who need it on a 1-2-1 basis and is treated with great confidentiality, and point people in the right direction of the services they require.
They meet throughout the year mainly to have a brew and chat about life in general, to meet and make new friends, and for those who require extra support, to help by signposting to relevant services in Warrington. We also at times hold activities such as bowling, theatre trips, quizzes and games.
They also have nights out in the town centre at Cotton Mill or Show Bar and take part with events they are holding, or even have the odd night out to Manchester to Canal Street or to the theatre.
During the year they are also visited by guest speakers.
They welcome visitors and potential new members whatever their sexuality, though is open to 18+ only.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG38XY - Princes Square is a shopping centre on Buchanan Street in central Glasgow, Scotland. It was developed in 1986 to a design by Edinburgh architects, the Hugh Martin Partnership. The new five-storey, 10,450-square-metre (112,500 sq ft) retail centre occupies a pre-existing cobbled square dating from 1841, which was reconfigured by enclosing the entire space below a new clear glass domed and vaulted roof. An expansion was completed in summer 1999, extending the centre into Springfield Court and providing a further 1,860 square metres (20,000 sq ft) of retail area and a new retail frontage to Queen Street.
The original cellars of the existing buildings were excavated to provide additional space. Inside the square, new galleries and stairs give access to the upper storeys. The original sandstone facades were preserved around the modern interior. The centre is adorned with decorative glass, tiling, lighting, timber and metalwork, designed by artists and craftsmen.
The writer Bill Bryson referred to Princes Square as one of the most intelligent pieces of urban renewal.
The Hugh Martin Partnership earned several design awards for Princes Square, including the RIBA Scottish Regional Award for Architecture (1988), the Edinburgh Architectural Association Centenary Medal (1989), and a Civic Trust Award (1989). The original fabric has been protected as a category B listed building since 1970.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4393219878 - 'This is the Horace and Eva Banner stained glass window in Grappenhall Methodist Church, on the A50 Knutsford Road, Grappenhall, Cheshire.
They were UFM missionaries to the indians of Brazil. Horace lived from 1906 - 1974 and Eva from 1921 - 1998.
The window depicts Smoke Falls, the location of the Kayapo Mission Station, established by Horace Banner. The falls, on the Xingu are 1000 miles up river from its confluence with the Amazon. Eva and Horace were reputed to be the first white couple ever to see Smoke Falls. With children Jessie Mae and James, they lived in a Kayapo village and ministered to the tribe.
The brass inscription at the side of the window names 'Horace Banner as a missionary to the Tembe and Urubu from 1928 and a pioneer missionary to the Kayapo tribe 1936 - 1972. Eva his wife worked with him amongst the Kayapo at Smoke Falls (1947-1972) and undertook further ministry in Brazil 1975 &
1979. May their example inspire us in our witness for Jesus Christ'.
The window is on the south side of the church, which apart from this is in quite a plain style. Wording on the window is 'Go ye therefore and teach all nations. I am with you always even until the end of the world'. (a version of Matthew 28:20 from the bible).
Below is a more elaborate extract from the Grappenhall IM history:
When Horace first arrived in this part of Brazil, he and William Johnson went in search of three missing missionaries who had not been heard of for several months. Those three missionaries are still known to this day as the \u2018Three Freds' : Fred Roberts, Fred Wright and Fred Dawson.
The three Freds had gone to work amongst the Kayapo and had travelled up the Xingo and then it\u2019s tributary, the Rio Zinho. The Kayapo\u2019s only contact with civilisation was through the savage attacks they carried out on the homes of Brazilian settlers often killing the men and carrying off the women back into the rain forest.
It was an 800 mile journey by boat and motor transport before Horace and William reached the edge of hostile Indian territory. They then made two attempts with the assistance of armed guards to follow the route up the Rio Zinho taken by the three Freds. Eventually they penetrated 200 miles into Indian territory to stand below the waterfall known as Smoke Falls to find the sunken motor boat and the clothing remains belonging to the three Freds.
Horace\u2019s party had travelled along the Rio Zinho knowing that they could be ambushed by the Indians at any time. On their return journey to safety, Horace recorded that he had turned to the second chapter of the book of Ezekial and read:-
\u201cand thou, son of man, be not afraid of them\u2026..be not afraid of their words, nor dismayed at their looks\u2026\u2026Thou shalt speak my words unto them.\u201d
Words of scripture that Horace would follow and lead to forty years of ministry to the Kayapo Indians.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EME6N1 - Large Reform UK campaign placard for Rob Kenyon displayed above a residential garden in Hindley Green, an area within the Makerfield parliamentary constituency in Greater Manchester, England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJYKFT - Photograph shows a teal Reform UK ˜MAKERFIELD NEEDS REFORM' poster fixed to a wooden stake in a large garden off Bolton Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, Greater Manchester, during the June 2026 Makerfield by-election campaign. The sign is framed by hedges, trees and daylight, with the pale lettering and Reform UK arrow branding standing out against a green residential backdrop. The image asks a direct political question in visual form: does Makerfield need Reform, or will voters stick with stock-photo/gotonysmith-Labour.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>Labour in a long-standing northern heartland? The key figures in the contest are Andy Burnham for Labour, the high-profile Mayor of Greater Manchester, Robert Kenyon for Reform UK, reported as a plumber and councillor, and Sarah Wakefield for the Green Party, a Manchester city councillor and charity director. The by-election was due on 18 June 2026 after Josh Simons stood down, and Westminster coverage treated it as nationally significant because Burnham's possible return to Parliament was linked with wider debate about Labour's direction under Sir Keir Starmer. Reform UK under Nigel Farage has made immigration and ˜stop the boats' messaging central to its appeal, while Kenyon's campaign attracted scrutiny over reported past social media and online forum posts. The Green campaign added further complexity, with debate about whether a left or progressive vote split could help Reform. This image can illustrate Reform UK campaigning, right-wing populism, Labour versus Reform, red wall politics, northern voter disillusionment, tactical voting, by-election pressure, party branding, immigration politics, local democracy and the contest for working-class support in Greater Manchester. For stock buyers, its value lies in the readable slogan, the garden setting and the clear connection between a local Ashton-in-Makerfield street and a national argument about Labour, Reform UK, the Greens, voter trust and the future direction of British politics.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJYKNW - This documentary editorial photograph shows a large yellow Labour campaign centre banner tied to green metal railings outside the campaign base at 2 Walter Street, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, Greater Manchester. The bold red wording reads LABOUR CAMPAIGN CENTRE , creating a clear, readable image of party organisation during the high-profile Makerfield by-election campaign. The location is associated with Stubshaw Cross Labour Club and the wider Ashton-in-Makerfield area, placing the image firmly in a traditional Labour constituency in the North West of England. The picture was taken in soft daylight under an overcast sky, with the banner, railings and roadside setting giving it the feel of a practical local campaign operation rather than a national media set piece. The by-election was triggered after Labour MP Josh Simons said he would stand down to allow Andy Burnham to contest the seat and seek a return to Westminster. Burnham is the Mayor of Greater Manchester, not Manchester city mayor, and national coverage has framed his Westminster return as potentially significant for Labour's future direction and possible leadership speculation around Sir Keir Starmer, although that should be described carefully as political speculation rather than a proven outcome. The image is useful for stories on by-elections, Labour campaigning, constituency politics, political realignment, northern Labour heartlands, doorstep canvassing, party organisation, campaign headquarters, candidate selection and the pressure on established parties from challengers such as Reform UK. For picture buyers, the value lies in the direct, uncluttered campaign signage, precise Wigan location, and connection to a nationally watched local contest where Westminster ambition, local loyalties and wider Labour Party tensions intersect.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJYKGY - Two tribes editorial photograph shows two rival political signs in a front garden setting in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, Greater Manchester, during the June 2026 Makerfield by-election campaign.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDD6R1 - Calton Hill (archaically spelt Caltoun or Caldoun and also known as the Calton Hill), is a hill in central Edinburgh, Scotland, just to the east of Princes Street and is included in the city's UNESCO World Heritage Site. Views of, and from, the hill are often used in photographs and paintings of the city.
Calton Hill is the headquarters of the Scottish Government, which is based at St Andrew's House, on the steep southern slope of the hill
with the Scottish Parliament Building, and other notable buildings, for example Holyrood Palace, lying near the foot of the hill.
The hill also includes several iconic monuments and buildings: the National Monument, the Nelson Monument, the Dugald Stewart Monument (here on the left), the old Royal High School, the Robert Burns Monument, the Political Martyrs' Monument and the City Observatory.
