Unilever North West plant where Persil and Surf are made could close after 'irreversible decline in demand'
The household products giant said the plant is 'running at less than half its capacity'
Global household products giant Unilever is set to close an historic North West plant where Persil and Surf laundry detergents are made, after what it called an irreversible decline in demand for washing powder.
The British-Dutch firm said it was launching a strategic review into the 136-year-old factory in Warrington that employs more than 100 people but is currently running at less than half its capacity.
The statement from the firm, whose brands include Dove and Lynx, said one potential outcome would be to close the entire plant, and that it would be challenging to find a commercially sustainable alternative.
Unilever said: [We] appreciate that this is difficult and unsettling news for the 123 employees at Warrington and will support them through this review.
Jon Strachan, vice president of supply chain, added: This decision has not been taken lightly.
Whatever the outcome, the review is likely to require difficult decisions. We understand this will cause considerable concern for our Warrington employees, suppliers and the local community and that the outcome may have significant implications for them.
We are committed to treating our employees fairly throughout and providing support during this period of uncertainty.
Following the announcement, GMB, the union for Unilever workers, together with Warrington North MP Charlotte Nichols, have called on the company to save the historic factory.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNYF - This image shows an off-peak day return railway ticket and collection receipt laid over a printed York to Liverpool timetable, illustrating everyday UK rail travel and fare systems. The ticket details include journey validity, fare value, class of travel, and date, reflecting the complexity of British rail ticketing and pricing structures.
Printed timetables and paper tickets remain part of the passenger experience despite the growth of mobile and digital ticketing. The combination of timetable pages and ticket documentation highlights themes of public transport usage, travel planning, and intercity rail connections across northern England, including routes via Warrington.
The image is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to UK transport, rail policy, commuting, travel costs, public services, and mobility, as well as conceptual illustrations of journeys, schedules, and everyday travel administration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J42 - This image shows Transport for Wales CAF Class 197 unit 197018 standing at Warrington Bank Quay railway station in Cheshire. The train is operating a northbound service toward Holyhead, linking North West England with North Wales and the Isle of Anglesey.
The Class 197 fleet, built by CAF as part of the Civity family, represents a modernisation of diesel regional services in Wales and the border counties. Designed to replace older rolling stock, the trains offer improved accessibility, passenger comfort, and operational efficiency on long regional routes that are not fully electrified.
The photograph focuses on the cab end and coupling area of the unit, highlighting contemporary train design, lighting, and livery. Platform features such as the yellow safety line and tactile paving are visible, situating the scene within a busy mainline station environment that handles both long-distance and regional services.
Taken in daylight under the station canopy, the image is well suited to editorial use covering UK rail transport, modern rolling stock, regional connectivity, Welsh transport policy, and everyday passenger rail operations on routes linking England and Wales.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J49 - This image shows painted safety markings on a sloping railway platform at Warrington Bank Quay railway station in Cheshire, a key stop on the West Coast Main Line. The clear yellow text reads Sloping Platform ? Apply Brakes and is accompanied by universally recognised pictograms indicating luggage trolleys, pushchairs, and wheelchairs.
Sloping platforms are a known safety consideration on parts of the UK rail network, where gradients can cause wheeled items to roll toward the platform edge if not secured. Ground-level warnings such as this are designed to be immediately visible to passengers, supplementing tactile paving and yellow safety lines near the edge of the platform.
Warrington Bank Quay serves long-distance intercity services as well as regional trains, meaning platforms must accommodate high passenger volumes, heavy luggage, and accessibility needs. The presence of inclusive symbols highlights the importance of designing safety messaging that addresses all users, including those with mobility aids.
Photographed from above in daylight, the image emphasises the functional design of railway safety infrastructure and is well suited to editorial use covering rail safety, station design, accessibility, transport policy, and everyday passenger experience on the UK rail network.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNG8 - This image shows a painted Cheshire Cat artwork displayed on a bus stop shelter on Wilderspool Causeway in Warrington, Cheshire (postcode WA4 1AD), close to the Causeway Hotel. The illustration forms part of local visual identity and public art initiatives that bring character and humour to everyday urban infrastructure.
The Cheshire Cat is a well-known fictional character from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, written by Lewis Carroll, who was born in nearby Daresbury, Cheshire. Its use in public artwork across the county has become a recognisable symbol of regional identity, often appearing in murals, sculptures, and street art installations.
In this scene, the smiling cat is painted directly onto the blue bus shelter panel beneath official transport signage indicating services toward Warrington Bank Quay Station interchange. The contrast between functional transport information and playful artwork highlights efforts to humanise public spaces and improve the everyday experience of commuters.
Photographed in daylight with surrounding brick buildings and railings visible, the image is well suited to editorial use covering public art, local identity, community placemaking, transport environments, and the integration of cultural references into ordinary street scenes in towns such as Warrington

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JDJ43F - Joseph Crosfield (5 October 1792 ? 16 February 1844) was a businessman who established a soap and chemical manufacturing business in Warrington, which was in the historic county of Lancashire and is now in the ceremonial county of Cheshire. This business was to become the firm of Joseph Crosfield and Sons.
Early life
Joseph Crosfield was born in Warrington, the fourth son of George Crosfield and his wife Ann n??e Key. The Crosfield family had been Quakers since the time of George Fox and this tradition was maintained by George and subsequently by Joseph. George Crosfield was a wholesale grocer in Warrington who also had interests in a sugar-refining business in Liverpool. The family moved to Lancaster in 1799 for George to develop a sugar-refining business there, while still keeping an interest in his grocery business in Warrington under the care of his assistant, Joseph Fell. Nothing is known of Joseph's early life in Lancaster. From September 1807, a time close to his 15th birthday, he was apprenticed for 6 years to Anthony Clapham, a druggist and chemist in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. By 1811 Anthony Clapham was also a soap manufacturer.
In 1814, Joseph's apprenticeship having finished, at the age of 21 he decided to establish his own soap making business in Warrington. At this time soap manufacturing was growing rapidly in the Mersey bad recently developed canals and river navigations in the area which allowed for easier transport of the raw materials into the factories and for the distribution of the finished products. A number of new large soaperies had recently been established in the nearby towns of St Helens, Runcorn and Liverpool.
Joseph Crosfield's soapery was established on the north bank of a loop of the river Mersey in an area known as Bank Quay, near to urban Warrington but at that time separated from it by a stretch of fields. Other industrial premises were nearby. The premises occupied that of a failed wire mill were sourced

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AJRRKF - Avanti West Coast is a train operating company in the United Kingdom owned by FirstGroup (70%) and Trenitalia (30%) that began operating the West Coast Partnership franchise on 8 December 2019. It replaced Virgin Trains, which had operated the franchise since 1997.
In November 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced that the InterCity West Coast franchise would be superseded by the West Coast Partnership (WCP), which would include operating High Speed 2 (HS2) services from 2026.
The DfT required that bidders have experience in high-speed trains and infrastructure, hence all partnered with an existing high-speed operator. In June 2017, the DfT announced that three consortia had been shortlisted to bid for the franchise:
FirstGroup (70%) / Trenitalia (30%)
MTR Corporation (75%) / Guangshen Railway Company (25%)
Stagecoach (50%) / SNCF (30%) / Virgin Group (20%)
In August 2019 the DfT awarded the franchise to the First Trenitalia consortium with Avanti West Coast to commence operations on 8 December 2019. Some uncertainty remains as the Competition and Markets Authority launched a merger inquiry into the award of the franchise following a referral from the European Commission
Avanti West Coast initially operates the same services as Virgin Trains on the West Coast Main Line. When High Speed 2 opens, it will also operate these services.

The Patten Arms facing Warrington Bank Quay Station. In the early 16th century the Patten family purchased the entire Winmarleigh estate. The family was noted for their contribution to the development of Warrington and also for making the River Mersey more navigable, Thomas Patten did this in order to ship copper ore to his works at Bank Quay and for establishing vital transport connections to promote other trade in the area. It was Patten's son, also called Thomas, who built nearby Bank Hall (now the Town Hall) in 1750.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K43P0P - A 17 year old has been jailed for life after he battered another teenager to death.
Victim Stuart Lowe, 18, was killed in Warrington, in October, when Sibongiseni Majola struck him about the head with a screwdriver and kicked him while on the ground.
Stuart had suffered a massive brain injury and although he clung to life for seven days, he died a week later without regaining conciousness.
Yesterday, Majola, from Warrington, was sentenced to life behind bars, with a recommendation he serve at least 12 years before he can be considered for parole.
He had admitted murder last month at Chester crown court.
The court heard that joinery apprentice Stuart had gone to a party at The Bank Quay Social Club on October 17, last year.
It finished at 11pm and led to up to 100 young people, mostly students, milling around on the streets outside.
The mood began to change when football songs were chanted and witnesses report seeing fighting breaking out.
Majola and his friend were hit, and later claimed they had been subjected to racist comments.
The defendant left the scene in a friend's car and was dropped off at his home nearby.
But instead of staying there, he armed himself with a screwdriver, and headed back to Warrington town centre.
His friend, who had also armed himself with a shovel, joined him.
As they walked along Sankey Street they came across Stuart Lowe with his friends, making their way home.
Although Stuart was not involved in the initial fight, an altercation developed between the two groups, and Majola struck his head with the screwdriver.
Witnesses say Majola kicked Stuart as he lay on the floor before running off.
A 17-year-old, from Warrington, pleaded guilty to the possession of the shovel and affray and was jailed for 18 months.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTA16 - Lever Brothers was a British manufacturing company founded in 1885 by brothers William Hesketh Lever (1851?1925) and James Darcy Lever (1854?1916). They invested in and successfully promoted a new soap-making process invented by chemist William Hough Watson. In 1930, Lever Brothers merged with Margarine Unie to form Unilever.
Starting with a small grocery business begun by his father, William Lever and his brother James entered the soap business in 1885 by buying a small soap works in Warrington. The brothers teamed up with a Bolton chemist, William Hough Watson, who became an early business partner. Watson invented the process which resulted in a new soap, using glycerin and vegetable oils such as palm oil, rather than tallow. The resulting soap was a good, free-lathering soap, at first named Honey Soap then later named Sunlight Soap. Production reached 450 tons per week by 1888. Larger premises were built on marshes at Bromborough Pool on the Wirral Peninsula at what became Port Sunlight. Though the company was named Lever Brothers, William Lever's brother and co-director James never took a major part in running the business. He fell ill in 1895, probably as a result of diabetes, and resigned his directorship two years later.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTACN - The Warrington Transporter Bridge (or Bank Quay Transporter Bridge) across the River Mersey is a structural steel transporter bridge. The bridge has a span of 200 ft (61 m), is 30 ft (9.1 m) wide, 76 ft (23 m) feet above high water level, with an overall length of 339 ft (103 m) feet and a total height of 89 ft (27 m). It was constructed in 1915 and fell into disuse in approximately 1964. It was designed by William Henry Hunter and built by Sir William Arrol & Co.
It was the second of two transporter bridges across the Mersey at Warrington. The first was erected in 1905 slightly to the north of the existing bridge, and was described in The Engineer in 1908. A third transporter bridge over the Mersey was the Widnes-Runcorn Transporter Bridge, built in 1905 and dismantled in 1961.
The Warrington Transporter Bridge was constructed to connect the two parts of the large chemical and soap works of Joseph Crosfield and Sons. It was originally designed to carry rail vehicles up to 18 long tons (18 tonnes) in weight, and was converted for road vehicles in 1940. In 1953 it was further modified to carry loads of up to 30 long tons (30 tonnes).
The bridge is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building, and because of its poor condition it is on the Heritage at Risk Register. The bridge is protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
A local group called 'Friends of Warrington Transporter Bridge' (FoWTB) was formed in April 2015 to act as the independent voice of the bridge. The group is liaising with other interest groups to safeguard the future of the bridge and its industrial heritage status. FoWTB have been featured on the local BBC News programme North West Tonight and have set up a website for the bridge along with Facebook and Twitter pages. In 2016, the bridge was nominated for the Institution of Civil Engineers North West Heritage Award.

Warrington Bank Quay is a north-south oriented mainline station on one side of the main shopping area, with the west-east oriented Warrington Central on the other side to the north west operating a more frequent service to the neighbouring cities of Liverpool and Manchester.
A bus shuttle service operated every 20 minutes from Monday to Friday daytime between the two stations and the Centre Park business park. The station is directly on the West Coast Main Line.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H542X8 - Starting with a small grocery business begun by his father, William Lever and his brother James entered the soap business in 1885 by buying a small soap works in Warrington.
He fell ill in 1895, probably as a result of diabetes, and resigned his directorship two years later

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H550GA - Cable theft costs millions of pounds each year. The total cost to the economy, taking into account the impact of freight delays to power stations, supermarkets etc and on passengers who miss appointments or have their day ruined, is even higher.
The theft of metal is a big problem for the railway as thieves target signalling cables, overhead power lines and even metal fences to sell for scrap.
Britain's rail network is designed to fail safe, which means that when a cable is cut trains are brought to a standstill. This protects passengers but can lead to lengthy, frustrating delays while the problem is found and fixed safely.
A large proportion of funding comes from the UK Government, so these thefts are, ultimately, costing taxpayers money.

The cheap and cheerful manicure has been the success story of the recession. The number of nail bars has increased by 20 per cent in the past year alone.
Earlier this year it was revealed that they are the fastest-growing business on the High Street, constituting 16 per cent of new outlets in the past three years. There are now 30,000 in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CFEFHN - Gold Zone Virgin trains sign, Warrington Bank Quay, Parker St, Warrington, Cheshire , UK
Virgin Trains introduced three sliding classes of travel. Instead of First and Standard, you'd have Gold Zone, Blue Zone and Purple Zone. Gold Zone was full First Class and available to full-fare First Open ticket holders only. This would always take up at least 2 of the First Class vehicles, but in the peaks would take up all of them.
'Purple Zone was Standard Class, available to all Standard ticket holders, and would take up at least 3 of the Standard Class vehicles. The other vehicles would be the Blue Zone, which was where it got controversial. The Blue Zone was available only to holders of full-fare undiscounted Standard Open singles and returns, but also contained Weekend First accommodation on weekends and off-peak. On weekends, it would include both First and Standard accommodation, but in the peaks Standard only.'

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CFEFHW - A close-up view of a yellow railway warning sign mounted on a red-painted column at Warrington Bank Quay railway station in Cheshire, England. The sign reads, High Speed Trains pass this platform. Keep back from the platform edge behind the yellow line, delivering a clear and direct safety message to passengers waiting on the platform. The surface of the sign shows signs of wear, with chipped paint and weathering that reflect prolonged outdoor exposure and constant public use.
Warrington Bank Quay is a major mainline station on the West Coast Main Line, serving high-speed intercity services as well as regional rail traffic. The warning sign highlights the operational reality of fast-moving trains passing through platforms without stopping, underlining the importance of passenger awareness and compliance with safety guidance in busy transport environments. The bold yellow background and black lettering follow long-established British railway signage conventions designed for maximum visibility and instant comprehension.
The image captures everyday transport infrastructure that is often overlooked but plays a critical role in public safety. The red column, industrial canopy structure and blurred station elements in the background provide contextual cues of a working railway environment. The combination of utilitarian design, worn materials and explicit safety instruction conveys themes of risk management, public responsibility and the practical realities of rail travel in the UK.
This photograph is well suited for editorial use covering rail transport, passenger safety, infrastructure, commuting and public services, as well as commercial applications relating to transport systems, health and safety messaging, travel awareness campaigns and representations of everyday British railway environments.
