Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E26XHG - Street scene showing customers queuing outside a Cooplands bakery in Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The photograph captures a busy moment on a pedestrianised high street with shoppers waiting at the entrance to the well-known northern bakery chain, while other passers-by move through the town centre. Visible details include the traditional Cooplands shopfront, food posters in the windows, a mobility scooter, families, casual shoppers and a small dog, all helping to create an authentic picture of everyday life in a prosperous Yorkshire market town. The image is useful for themes such as bakery retail, high street footfall, queueing, convenience food, takeaway snacks, affordable treats, lunchtime shopping, community life, local commerce and the continuing popularity of established British bakery brands.
Beverley is a historic market town in the East Riding of Yorkshire with an attractive commercial centre, steady visitor numbers and a strong mix of national chains and independent shops. This scene works well for editorial and commercial use around consumer habits, cost of living, value food shopping, changing high streets, retail resilience, pedestrian town centres, street life, social interaction and daily routines in England. The queue outside the bakery suggests demand, popularity and regular custom, making the image relevant to stories about food-to-go culture, bakery chains, working town centres, weekday shopping patterns, local services, community visibility, accessible shopping streets and the role of familiar retail brands in British town life. It can also support themes around older shoppers, inclusive public spaces, mobility, Yorkshire identity, northern England, traditional baking, savouries, sandwiches, bread, cakes, pies and pastries, with strong documentary value for articles about retail, towns, everyday economics and modern urban life.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T10DPJ - H.M.Pasties was set up by Lee Wakeham, an ex-offender with the aim to bring out the good inside' by employing ex-offenders to make and sell delicious handmade Cornish-style pasties.
Inspired by the success of Bad Boys Bakery, The Barker Baker and the Clink Charity
who now boast a 41% reduction in reoffending for people involved in the bakery, H.M.Pasties was born in 2018 with support from the Big Lottery Fund, Forward Trust and the Santander Foundation.
With over 10.5 million people in the UK holding a criminal record many face huge difficulties in gaining employment post sentence due to the stigma that surrounds it.
H.M.Pasties wants to stop talent and lives from being wasted. They are passionate about helping those who feel left behind to find fulfilling work in order to enhance their wellbeing and help them feel part of a thriving local community. By offering a transitional employment programme which provides training and support ex-offenders can become ready for the world of work, making long term employment a reality.
H.M.Pasties was created to supply high quality, handmade traditional pasties and other baked goods to customers across Greater Manchester and add real social benefit.
This is achieved by not only sourcing ingredients from the Prison Estate but also by employing people with convictions in the manufacture, sales and distribution of the pasties whilst simultaneously offering peer mentoring support to enable them to build new careers and live a life free of crime.
In order to become a truly independent, self sustaining business, HM Pasties is now a stand alone limited company looking to build on our now established brand to create even more social impact.
Dignity, self-respect and a stable income are crucial to preventing reoffending, and securing employment is the key to achieving those goals.

In 1976, Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam bought offices at 11 Neal's Yard, and alternative activist and entrepreneur Nicholas Saunders established the bulk Whole Food Warehouse
he had bought 2 Neal's Yard, a derelict warehouse previously used by the former Covent Garden fruit and vegetable market, for £7,000 a few years earlier. From this success, grew other enterprises in other buildings such as Neal's Yard Apothecary (now known as Neal's Yard Remedies), Neal's Yard Bakery, Monmouth Coffee Company and Neal's Yard Dairy,
The area now contains several other health-food cafes and retailers

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RA23AH - This image shows a close-up view of a cast iron street plate marking the location of a fire hydrant in London. The embossed text reads Ham Baker & Co Ltd MWB Fire Hydrant 5635 ND Makers Westminster SW, identifying both the manufacturer and the hydrant reference number used by water and fire authorities.
Such plates form part of London's long-established municipal infrastructure, providing essential information for emergency services by indicating the position of underground water mains and hydrants. The initials MWB refer to the Metropolitan Water Board, which managed London's water supply for much of the twentieth century, placing the plate firmly within the capital's historic public utilities system.
The textured metal surface, worn edges, and oxidised colouring reflect decades of exposure to traffic, weather, and footfall, giving the plate a distinctive patina. Foundry-made street furniture like this is a characteristic but often overlooked element of London's streetscape, combining functional engineering with durable industrial design.
Photographed tightly to emphasise lettering, texture, and material detail, the image works well as editorial illustration of urban infrastructure, historic utilities, emergency services support systems, and the layered history embedded in everyday London street surfaces. It is particularly suited to features on British industrial heritage, public works, and the hidden systems that support city life.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RA23DB - A Transport for London digital service information display inside Hampstead Underground Station in north London. The screen provides real-time updates on network conditions, listing reduced service on the London Overground, minor delays on the Bakerloo and Jubilee lines, and a general message indicating good service on all other lines.
Such information displays are a key feature of the modern London Underground, designed to keep passengers informed of disruptions, delays, and operational changes across the network. Positioned within station interiors, they form part of TfL's wider passenger-information system, supporting daily commuter travel and visitor navigation.
Photographed under station lighting, the image documents everyday public-transport communication in London, illustrating how real-time digital signage is integrated into historic Underground environments. It is suitable for editorial use relating to urban transport, commuting, infrastructure management, and contemporary life on the London Underground.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PGAYND - Cherwell Valley services is a Moto motorway service station on the M40 motorway at Stoke Lyne, near Bicester, in Oxfordshire, England. In August 2011 it was rated as 3 stars by quality assessors at Visit England
however, it is unknown whether this was a rating of the new or temporary building.
Location
The services are located at junction 10 of the M40, and are accessed from a roundabout on the junction.
Despite its name, it is neither in the valley nor the drainage basin of the Cherwell, but rather beside a small east-flowing stream that becomes part of the Padbury Brook before joining the Great Ouse at Buckingham.
History
The former main building
It was opened in the spring of 1994 and gave the 89-mile motorway its first service station, more than three years after its completion. The site was previously occupied by a toilet facility, which had been there since the motorway's opening.

Fry is most famous for Fry's Chocolate Cream, the first mass-produced chocolate bar, which was launched in 1866, and Fry's Turkish Delight, launched in 1914.
Fry, alongside Cadbury and Rowntree's, was one of the big three British confectionery manufacturers throughout much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and all three companies were founded by Quakers. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD243H - This image shows the exterior window display and signage of Sandgate Coffee, an independent takeaway coffee shop located on Sandgate in the historic seaside town of Whitby, North Yorkshire. The hand-painted sign describes the café as the Home of the Whitby Fatties, a local variation of the traditional Yorkshire Fat Rascals cake, a rich baked treat associated with the region.
The shop window features a colourful and decorative cake display in shades of pink, designed to attract passing visitors and highlight the café's baking theme. A clear notice indicates that the business operates on a takeaway-only basis, reflecting the small footprint typical of many independent food outlets in Whitby's busy tourist streets.
Whitby is well known for its strong food heritage, including jet jewellery, seafood, and regional baking traditions. Small cafés such as Sandgate Coffee contribute to the town's appeal as a destination for food tourism, offering locally themed specialities alongside everyday refreshments.
The photograph documents a detail of Whitby's independent retail and food culture, capturing how local identity and traditional recipes are used to create distinctive offerings within a popular tourist town.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JR3MNW - A square plinth supporting a cast iron lampstand with four feet shaped like lion paws and three sets of four fluted columns. At the top, the lamp rises from a Corinthian capital. Richard Baker Bellyse came from a prosperous and well-known family of doctors who practised successfully in the area. New lamps were installed in 1975.
St James' Church is in the village of Audlem in south Cheshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building.
The church dates from the late 13th century with additions in the 19th century. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Macclesfield and the deanery of Nantwich. Its benefice is combined with those of St John, Doddington, and St Chad, Wybunbury. The church stands in an elevated position in the centre of the village.
The church is not recorded in the Domesday Book and it is thought that the first building on the site was given by Thomas de Aldelim to the priory of St Thomas at Stafford in the reign of Edward I. After the dissolution of the monasteries the advowson was granted to the Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield. The church dates from the late 13th and early 14th centuries. In 185556 there were additions and alterations by Lynam and Rickman
The church stands on a small mound in the centre of the village. It is built of red sandstone ashlar with a lead roof. Its plan consists of a six-bay nave with an embattled clerestory, a tower at the northwest corner of the nave, a north aisle with a chapel at its east end, a narrower south aisle, a chancel and a south porch.
The church is approached through the south porch by 26 steps arranged in a semicircle. The south wall contains a former priest's doorway which has been walled up and its steps removed. The tower has on its west face a two-light window, above which is a pair of windows and above these is a circular clock. The belfry windows have two lights and are louvred.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A4PJNY - Wanting to increase their presence and market share, Greggs opened their first Moto-operated franchised bakery at Lymm truckstop in early 2012, with high hopes. Following good sales a second store was opened at Birch eastbound the following June, and it was then confirmed that most Moto services would get one. Moto have also been opening franchises at some Extra services.
What makes Greggs a little bit different to other new brands is that most units have been modified so customers can visit without entering the main amenity building. This helped Moto's tax accounts: by not offering the option of eat-in food, the food was exempt from VAT, although the notorious pasty tax complicated things. As with most service station franchises, prices are inflated and the menu is altered slightly.
Greggs had never agreed to franchised stores before the Moto deal, but following its success they opened franchises with Euro Garages and Applegreen too (in the UK only). Greggs was now being added to petrol stations across the country, and Euro Garages started introducing the country's first Greggs drive thrus.
On the baked goods front, Moto had been using Upper Crust as a bakery brand, although this sold fewer hot goods and began to lose ground to Moto's other stores. In 2011 they also introduced West Cornwall Pasty Co., mostly in stands outside the services. Other operators have responded to Greggs with the likes of The Cornish Bakery, Pret a Manger and The Pasty Shop.
In line with Greggs's rules, service stations in the West Country are not allowed to sell Cornish pasties, for fear of upsetting the locals.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDWT7R - Murals in Northern Ireland have become symbols of Northern Ireland, depicting the region's past and present political and religious divisions.
Belfast and Derry contain arguably the most famous political murals in Europe. It is believed that almost 2,000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. In 2014, the book, The Belfast Mural Guide estimated that, in Belfast, there were approximately 300 quality murals on display, with many more in varying degrees of age and decay. Murals commemorate, communicate and display aspects of culture and history. The themes of murals often reflect what is important to a particular community. A mural therefore exists to express an idea or message and could generally be seen as reflecting values held dear to that community.
In Irish republican areas the themes of murals can range from the 1981 Irish hunger strike, with particular emphasis on strike leader Bobby Sands
murals of international solidarity with revolutionary groups are equally common, as are those which highlight a particular issue, for example the Ballymurphy Massacre or the McGurk's Bar bombing. In working class unionist communities, murals are used to promote Ulster loyalist paramilitary groups such as the Ulster Defence Association and Ulster Volunteer Force and commemorate their deceased members. However traditional themes such as William III of England and the Battle of the Boyne, the Battle of the Somme and the 36th Ulster Division are equally common

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GJBNMN - Chinatown in Manchester, England is an ethnic enclave in the city centre. It is the second largest Chinatown in the United Kingdom and the third largest in Europe. It has an archway on Faulkner Street which was completed in 1987 and contains many Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Nepali, Vietnamese, Singaporean and Malaysian restaurants, shops, bakeries and supermarkets.
The first settlers to arrive in the city came in the early 20th century
according to the BBC, Many arrived alone and were engaged in what was seen as the traditional trade of laundries. Manchester's first Chinese restaurant, Ping Hong, opened on Mosley Street in 1948, on the eve of a Chinese immigration wave that would commence during the 1950s. Manchester did not have a significant Chinese population, reaching only about 2,000. However, after World War II, there were severe labour shortages, and in response, the government passed the British Nationality Act 1948, which allowed easier access into the country. Additionally, Hong Kong's rapid urbanisation meant that many farmers and traditional residents' homes were being destroyed by the urban sprawl, so many decided to migrate.
The area's beginnings are rooted in the restaurant business, as many Chinese restaurants surfaced soon after the immigration boom. By the 1970s other Chinese businesses began to emerge, such as medicine shops, Chinese supermarkets, as well as financial and legal services, all serving the employees of the expanding number of Chinese restaurants in the area. There was even a Hong Kong government office and a branch of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation during the 1970s. In 1989 the Chinese Arts Centre opened in Chinatown. In 2013 the Bank of East Asia opted to open their first Manchester branch in Chinatown, situated on Charlotte Street. The branch officially opened on 25 October 2013, in a ceremony attended by the Lord Mayor of Manchester.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BGRC71 - A pasty is a British baked pastry, a traditional variety of which is particularly associated with Cornwall, South West England, but has spread all over the British Isles. It is made by placing an uncooked filling, typically meat and vegetables, in the middle of a flat shortcrust pastry circle, bringing the edges together in the middle, and crimping over the top to form a seal before baking.
The traditional Cornish pasty, which since 2011 has had Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status in Europe, is filled with beef, sliced or diced potato, swede (also known as yellow turnip or rutabaga referred to in Cornwall and other parts of the West Country as turnip) and onion, seasoned with salt and pepper, and baked. Today, the pasty is the food most associated with Cornwall. It is a traditional dish and accounts for 6% of the Cornish food economy. Pasties with many different fillings are made, and some shops specialise in selling pasties.
The origins of the pasty are unclear, though there are many references to them throughout historical documents and fiction. The pasty is now popular worldwide because of the spread of Cornish miners and sailors from across Cornwall, and variations can be found in Australia, Mexico, the United States, Ulster and elsewhere.
Pasties resemble turnovers from many other cuisines and cultures, including the bridie in Scotland, empanada in Spanish-speaking countries, pirog in Eastern Europe, samsa in Central Asia, curry puff in Southeast Asia, and shaobing in China

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HD9T - The Menai Suspension Bridge (Welsh: Pont Grog y Borth) is a suspension bridge between the island of Anglesey and the mainland of Wales. Designed by Thomas Telford and completed in 1826, it was the first modern suspension bridge in the world.
Here shown at sunset in winter, with the mountains behind covered in snowfall.
Before the bridge was completed in 1826, the island had no fixed connection to the mainland and all movements to and from Anglesey were by ferry (or, with difficulty, on foot at low tide). The main source of income on Anglesey was from the sale of cattle, and to move them to the markets of the inland counties or London, they had to be driven into the water and swum across the Menai Straits.
The Act of Union 1800 increased the need for transport to Ireland, and with Holyhead as one of the principal terminals to Dublin it was decided to build a bridge.
Thomas Telford was assigned the task of improving the route from London to Holyhead, and one of the key improvements was his design of the suspension bridge over the Menai Strait between a point near Bangor on the mainland and the village of Porthaethwy (which is now also known as Menai Bridge) on Anglesey. The design of the bridge had to allow for Royal Navy sailing ships 100 feet (30 m) tall to pass under the deck at high tide, and no scaffolding was allowed during construction as that would have violated the rule.
Construction of the bridge began in 1819 with the towers on either side of the strait. These were constructed from Penmon limestone and were hollow with internal cross-walls. Then came the sixteen huge chain cables, each made of 935 iron bars that support the 176-metre (577 ft) span. To avoid rusting between manufacture and use, the iron was soaked in linseed oil and later painted. The suspending power of the chains was calculated at 2,016 tons and the total weight of each chain was 121 tons. The bridge was opened to much fanfare on 30 January 1826.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4446610220 - 'I have passed this a good few times and yesterday I stopped and took a snap for a number of those Dr Who nerds I know out there. This is my gift directly from my heart to you....
Apparently these were not originally a London thing.
First public police telephones of this type, although red in Britain were introduced in Glasgow in 1891. Gas lanterns were attached to the roof so to signal for instructions. The Metropolitan Police (Met) introduced police boxes throughout London between 1928 and 1937. These boxes were not made of wood as would first seem. The original MacKenzie Trench blueprints indicate that the material for the shell of the box is 'concrete' with only the door being made of teak hardwood.
A little heater was supplied as the boxes would have been notoriously cold. By 1953 there were 685 police boxes on the streets of London. In the late 1960's they were killed by the advent of the walkie-talkie. Some still survive and have been converted into High Street coffee bars. When I am up in Edinburgh I see quite a few, though quite a few are in various states of disrepair. Edinburgh's boxes are often ornate with faux neoclassical decoration.

The Pastry Case also on the site produces a range of sweet bakery products including gingerbread biscuits, chocolate clusters and ambient puff pastry. they are the UK's largest manufacturer of gingerbread shapes. That might be a useful fact for a local quiz night.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT2Y6 - Hartshead Moor services is a motorway service station on the M62 near Bradford, West Yorkshire. It is the highest service station in the United Kingdom
On 4 February 1974 a bomb was detonated on a coach ferrying British Army and Royal Air Force personnel from and to the bases at Catterick and Darlington during a period of industrial strike action on the trains. The incident occurred between junctions 26 and 27, shortly after midnight while most of those aboard were sleeping. Twelve people died and more than fifty were injured.
A memorial plaque was installed in memory of those who were killed, situated in the entrance hall of the westbound section of the service area, which was used as a first aid station for those wounded in the blast. A memorial service was held at the service area in February 2004. In 2009 a new memorial was created outside the service area at the wishes of the relatives of those killed
In December 2005 the RSPCA, working with the BBC filmed the sale of an African puff adder at the service area, exploiting a legal loophole to sell on the snake. It was discovered in April 2006 that the service area's toilets were frequently being used for homosexual activity.
Alpine Cleaning Services, who successfully pitched for investment on the television show Dragons' Den, opened one of their first truck-washing facilities at the service area in August 2006.
The service station is one of fourteen for which large murals were commissioned from artist David Fisher in the 1990s, designed to reflect the local area and history
