Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAWX0 - A close view of a traditional blue Garda lamp displaying the crest of An Garda S??och?na, Ireland's national police service. Mounted on a decorative metal bracket, the illuminated lantern is a long-established visual marker used to identify Garda stations and police premises throughout Ireland.
The Garda lamp is an instantly recognisable element of Irish civic streetscapes, symbolising state authority, public order and community policing. Its use dates back to the early twentieth century and continues today as both a functional and symbolic feature, particularly in urban centres such as Dublin.
Photographed against a backdrop of city architecture, the image captures a small but culturally significant detail of Ireland's public realm. Such visual markers are often used editorially to illustrate news stories, policing issues, governance, Irish institutions, or urban life in Dublin and other Irish cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RX180B - This image shows the iconic three-pointed star badge of Mercedes-Benz mounted on the bonnet of a car. The polished chrome emblem stands upright against the reflective surface of the vehicle's bodywork, highlighting the precision engineering and design associated with one of the world's most recognisable luxury automotive brands. The close-up composition emphasises the sculptural quality of the badge and its role as a symbol of prestige.
The Mercedes-Benz star represents the company's historic ambition to dominate land, sea, and air transport, a concept dating back to the early twentieth century. Bonnet-mounted badges such as this were once a common feature of luxury and executive cars, serving as both a brand identifier and a statement of status. While many modern vehicles now use flat grille-mounted logos, the standing bonnet emblem remains closely associated with classic and high-end Mercedes models.
The image conveys themes of luxury, craftsmanship, automotive heritage, and brand identity. It is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to premium vehicles, automotive design, motoring culture, German engineering, transport branding, and concepts of quality, success, and prestige.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP38K - Tatton is a constituency in Cheshire represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2017 by Esther McVey, a Conservative.
Constituency profile
Tatton comprises the north-western part of the Cheshire East unitary authority, including the towns of Knutsford and Wilmslow, and a number of villages such as Alderley Edge, Chelford, Handforth and Mobberley, in Cheshire. It also covers a small, north-east, part of the Cheshire West and Chester unitary authority, including some of the outskirts of Northwich.
The seat largely comprises prosperous villages and small towns, many of which have high property prices, set amidst Cheshire countryside, featuring country parks, hills, recreation grounds and golf courses. The area was previously dominated by countryside
however, since the 1950s, it has developed a largely built-up, suburban character, being located on the fringes of Greater Manchester. The largest centres of population are Alderley Edge, Wilmslow and Knutsford. Its proximity to Manchester means Tatton forms part of the commuter belt to the city.
The constituency was created for the 1983 general election following the major reorganisation of local authorities under the Local Government Act 1972, which came into effect on 1 April 1974. It was formed from parts of the seats of Runcorn, Cheadle, Northwich and Knutsford. The constituency is named after Tatton Park, a stately home in this area.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD738X - Derry Girls is a British teen sitcom, created and written by Lisa McGee, that premiered on 4 January 2018 on Channel 4 and ran for three series. The channel's most successful comedy since Father Ted, the series was inspired by McGee's own experiences growing up in Derry, Northern Ireland, in the 1990s, during the final years of the Troubles. It stars Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Louisa Harland, Nicola Coughlan, Jamie-Lee O'Donnell, and Dylan Llewellyn as five teenagers living in mid-1990s Derry while attending Our Lady Immaculate College, a fictional girls' Catholic secondary school based on the real-life Thornhill College, where McGee herself studied. Produced by British production company Hat Trick Productions, Derry Girls is filmed in Northern Ireland, with most scenes shot on location in Derry and some in Belfast.
Although the plot lines of Derry Girls are fictional, the series frequently references actual events of the Troubles and the Northern Ireland peace process, including the 1994 IRA ceasefire announcement, the 1995 visit to Northern Ireland of President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton, and the Good Friday referendum of 1998. Archival
Derry Girls has inspired a mural of its main characters painted on the side of Badgers Bar and Restaurant at 18 Orchard Street, Derry, which has become a popular tourist attraction.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PG92W3 - Pump clips are badges that are attached to handpumps in pubs to show which cask ales are available. In addition to the name of the beer served through the pump, they may give other details such as the brewer's name and alcoholic strength of the beer and serve as advertising.
Pump clips can be made of various materials. For beers that are brewed regularly by the big breweries, high quality plastic, metal or ceramic pump clips are used. Smaller breweries would use a printed plastic pump clip and for one-off beers laminated paper is used. There are variations on the material used, and the gaudiness or tastefulness of the decoration depending on how much the brewery wants to market their beers at the point of sale. Novelty pump clips have also been made of wood, slate and compact discs. Some even incorporate electronic flashing lights. Older pump clips were made of enamel.
The term pump clip originates from the clip that attaches it to the pump handle. These consist of a two-piece plastic ring which clamps to the handle with two screws. Plastic and laminated paper pump clips usually have a white plastic clip fixed with a sticky double-sided pad that pushes onto the handle.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NK27W5 - Travelex is a foreign exchange company founded by Lloyd Dorfman and headquartered in Peterborough. Its main businesses are foreign currency exchange, issuing prepaid credit cards for use by travellers, supplying central banks with foreign currency and global remittance. Travelex operates more than 1,100 stores and 900 ATMs in over 20 countries.
History
Travelex was founded as Express Exchange by Dorfman and opened its first branch in central London in 1976. By 1978 the company had four central London stores.
The company experienced growth in the 1980s, opening its first international store in 1984 in Rotterdam, and its first store at Heathrow Terminal 4 in 1986. Express Exchange subsequently became Travellers Exchange Corporation ? or Travelex ? when abbreviated
On 31 December 2019, Travelex took its UK and international websites and mobile apps offline following a reported cyber incident an action that also affected a number of large corporate third parties to whom Travelex provided a white-labelled travel money service including the online travel money services of supermarket chains such as ASDA, Tesco and Sainsbury's.
On 7 January 2020, it was claimed that the company was being held to ransom by hackers. The cyber criminals reportedly demanded ?4.6 million ($6 million) in ransom from Travelex after infecting its network with Sodinokibi ransomware, having claimed to have copied more than 5GB of customer personal data

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MKF7H1 - The Wigan Casino was a nightclub in Wigan, England. Operating between 1973 and 1981, it became known as a primary venue for Northern soul music. It carried forward the legacy created by clubs such as the Twisted Wheel in Manchester, the Chateau Impney (Droitwich), the Catacombs (Wolverhampton) and the Golden Torch (Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent). It remains one of the most famous clubs in Northern England. In 1978, allegedly the American music magazine Billboard voted Wigan Casino The Best Disco in the World, ahead of New York City's Studio 54. Although there is no tangible evidence of this award ever being publicised.
This England, a TV documentary about the Wigan Casino, was filmed in 1977. Russ Winstanley and Dave Nowell wrote a history of the club, Soul Survivors, The Wigan Casino Story, which was published in 1996.
Wigan Casino was the name of the last incarnation of a Wigan ballroom called the Empress. Local DJs Brian Rigby and Alan Cain approached lease owner Gerry Marshall to run all-nighters. Venue manager Mike Walker brought in Russ Winstanley, who had a DJ set at the local rugby club, to the Casino. At 2 am on Sunday 23 September 1973, Wigan Casino started its first-ever Northern soul all-nighter, with Winstanley as the DJ. After Winstanley and his helper Ian Fishwick, Kev Roberts was the third DJ at Casino all-nighters, who was quickly joined by Richard Searling Soul performers that performed there include Jackie Wilson, Edwin Starr and Junior Walker.
Young people from all over the UK regularly attended Wigan Casino to hear the latest northern soul artists and to dance. There were long queues to get in. The second dance floor, Mr M's, stayed open until 6 am and played oldies songs from a variety of DJs including Dave Evison and Steve Whittle. All-nighters generally ended with three songs that became known as the '3 before 8': Time Will Pass You By by Tobi Legend, Long After Tonight Is All Over by Jimmy Radcliffe, and I'm on My Way by Dean Parrish.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K7NBJX - A vape shop is a retail outlet specializing in the selling of electronic cigarette products. There are also online vape shops. A vape shop offers a range of e-cigarette products. The majority of vape shops do not sell e-cigarette products that are from Big Tobacco companies. In 2013, online search engine searches on vape shops surpassed searches on e-cigarettes. Around a third of all sales of e-cigarette products take place in vape shops. Big Tobacco believes the independent e-cigarette market is a threat to their interests.
Effective August 8, 2016, under the Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) rules, a vape shop that mixes or prepares e-liquids, or makes or modifies any kind of e-cigarettes, is regulated as a tobacco product manufacturer. The US FDA acknowledged that many vape shops will go out of business, but they also state many will stay open, despite hefty costs. Vape shop owner Joe Baba in the US believes a ban on public vaping might put several vape shops out of business because taste-testing would be prohibited. The revised EU Tobacco Products Directive came into effect May 2016 which regulates the sale and marketing of e-cigarettes. Small business owners are concerned that the regulations will make e-cigarettes less interesting to consumers and that this means a downturn of their business
By 2014 all the major multinational tobacco companies had entered the e-cigarette market. They did so either by buying existing e-cigarette companies (including Ruyan, the original Chinese e-cigarette company, which was bought by Imperial Tobacco) or by developing their own products. Although there continue to be independently owned vape shops, from economic and political perspectives the e-cigarette business is now part of the traditional tobacco industry. The smaller operators, who are independent sellers of e-cigarettes (so-called vape shops), are losing market share to the large tobacco companies

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K6C9BG - Hackney could be called the chicken shop capital of London, the love of spicy wings or thighs a common service
Greasy chicken bones litter the streets like cigarette butts in a borough caught by Kentucky fried fever. Abdal Khan, of ?Chicken and Pizza' on Amhurst Road, dubbed Hackney the chicken capital of the world and it's hard to see otherwise.
The growing abundance of fried food shops is underlined by the fact that there are now more than two for each secondary school in the borough.
The shops centre on Stoke Newington and other districts with the right demographics. These are targeted operations not just random start ups.
Residents should be careful though when ordering their wings, many chicken shops have a poor food rating. ?Dixy Chicken' in Hackney Central, one of the 20 takeaways listed on the database, has a paltry one out of five star rating, indicating that the establishment is failing to comply fully with Britain's food hygiene laws.
A 25-year-old Hackney fried chicken shop worker of five years, spoke of the industry's bad practice.
After cooking a piece of battered chicken, you can only serve it within an hour, but staff leave it on a low heat all day, creating a breeding ground for bacteria, he said.
They do it to cut costs and get the most out of their stock.
It should be noted that the problem is not limited to chicken shops. There are around 160 fried food takeaways in the area, which equals eight per square kilometre. With this concentration, residents are never more than a 10 minute walk away from a deep-fried treat. A chicken and chips meal will set you back ?1, making it a clucking good deal.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K7NBJ7 - Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the striking clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London, England, and the name is frequently extended to refer also to the clock and the clock tower. The official name of the tower in which Big Ben is located was originally the Clock Tower, but it was renamed Elizabeth Tower in 2012 to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II.
The tower was designed by Augustus Pugin in a neo-Gothic style. When completed in 1859, its clock was the largest and most accurate four-faced striking and chiming clock in the world. The tower stands 316 feet (96 m) tall, and the climb from ground level to the belfry is 334 steps. Its base is square, measuring 40 feet (12 m) on each side. Dials of the clock are 22.5 feet (6.9 m) in diameter. All four nations of the UK are represented on the tower on shields featuring a rose for England, thistle for Scotland, shamrock for Ireland, and leek for Wales. On 31 May 2009, celebrations were held to mark the tower's 150th anniversary.
Big Ben is the largest of the tower's five bells and weighs 13.5 long tons (13.7 tonnes
15.1 short tons). It was the largest bell in the United Kingdom for 23 years. The origin of the bell's nickname is open to question
it may be named after Sir Benjamin Hall, who oversaw its installation, or heavyweight boxing champion Benjamin Caunt. Four quarter bells chime at 15, 30 and 45 minutes past the hour and just before Big Ben tolls on the hour. The clock uses its original Victorian mechanism, but an electric motor can be used as a backup.
The tower is a British cultural icon recognised all over the world. It is one of the most prominent symbols of the United Kingdom and parliamentary democracy, and it is often used in the establishing shot of films set in London. It measures 3 inches diameter. The following is an extract from the Great Western Railway General Appendix to the Rule Book dated 1936: BADGES FOR PLACING OVER LEVERS IN LOCKING FRAMES Reversible metal badges with the words Disconnected and Workman respectively are provided in Signal-boxes for attaching to any lever when disconnected to act as a reminder to the Signalman and thus prevent possible injury to himself by his pulling it over in the usual way, or to indicate to the Signalman that workmen are engaged at the point or signal operated by that lever. Before moving this lever the Signalman must inform the workmen, when in close proximity to the box, that he is about to do so, but when they are engaged beyond speaking distance the Signalman must, before moving the lever right over, give two or three small movements to indicate to the workmen that the lever is about to be reversed. The Signal Department man will be responsible for placing the badges on the levers

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JRM413 - A cigarette is a narrow cylinder containing burnable material, typically tobacco, that is rolled into thin paper for smoking. The cigarette is ignited at one end, causing it to smolder
the resulting smoke is orally inhaled via the opposite end. Cigarette smoking is the most common method of tobacco consumption. The term cigarette, as commonly used, refers to a tobacco cigarette, but the word is sometimes used to refer to other substances, such as a cannabis cigarette or an herbal cigarette. A cigarette is distinguished from a cigar by its usually smaller size, use of processed leaf, and paper wrapping, which is typically white.
Since the 1920s, scientists and doctors have been able to link smoking with respiratory illness. Researchers have identified negative health effects from smoking cigarettes such as cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart disease, and other health problems relating to nearly every organ of the body. Nicotine, the psychoactive drug in tobacco, makes cigarettes highly addictive. About half of cigarette smokers die of tobacco-related disease and lose on average 14 years of life. Every year, tobacco cigarettes kill more than 8 million people worldwide
with 1.2 million of those being non-smokers dying as the result of exposure to second-hand smoke. Second-hand smoke from cigarettes causes many of the same health problems as smoking, including cancer, which has led to legislation and policy that has prohibited smoking in many workplaces and public areas. Cigarette smoke contains over 7,000 chemical compounds, including arsenic, formaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide, lead, carbon monoxide, acrolein, and other poisonous substances. Over 70 of these are carcinogenic

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNBY6G - The Silver Jubilee Bridge (originally the Runcorn?Widnes Bridge or informally the Runcorn Bridge) crosses the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal at Runcorn Gap between Runcorn and Widnes in Halton, England. It is a through arch bridge with a main arch span of 361 yards (330 m). It was opened in 1961 as a replacement for the Widnes-Runcorn Transporter Bridge. In 1975?77 the carriageway was widened, after which the bridge was given its official name in honour of the Queen's Silver Jubilee. It carries the A533 road and a cantilevered footway. The bridge is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. The bridge was closed to vehicles for refurbishment upon the opening of the new Mersey Gateway Bridge, but reopened as a toll bridge in February 2021
In 1977 the carriageway was widened by incorporating the footpaths, giving it four lanes, and a cantilevered foot-way was built on the east side of the bridge. This work was completed in 1977 and in that year the bridge was renamed from Runcorn Bridge to the Silver Jubilee Bridge to commemorate the Queen's Silver Jubilee.
Since 1994 the bridge has been illuminated at night by floodlights. Repairs to chloride corrosion of the bridge's deck were carried out in the early 21st century using an innovative electrolytic method
they were shortlisted for the Prime Minister's Award for Better Public Building of 2010
Traffic on the bridge continued to grow to over 80,000 vehicles a day, and there was frequent congestion. In order to alleviate this, a further crossing was built, known as the Mersey Gateway Bridge. This is a six-lane toll bridge to the east of the Silver Jubilee Bridge that opened on 14 October 2017

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JMD5NK - HISTORY: The police station, formerly Willow House, was built in Badbrook, on the rural edge of Stroud, probably in the early C18. Willow House was converted to a police station in 1858 to the designs of James Medland of Gloucester (the County Surveyor between 1857 and 1889). Medland designed most of the county's eleven purpose-built courts and police stations constructed between the 1860s and 1880s. Extensions to Stroud police station, designed by Medland, were carried out in 1885-6 when a cell block, stables and an office block to the north-west of the station were built. The office block was converted to a Petty Sessional Court in 1908 by Robert Phillips, architect to the Gloucestershire Education Committee. Other extensions and alterations were also carried out in the C20. The police station (now called Willow Court) and the stabling behind (now called Willow House) were converted to business use in the late C20. The court became the Liberal Club, until the early C21.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M108DB - Coal Drops Yard is a shopping complex and privately owned public space that forms part of the King's Cross Central development scheme in London, England. The development was designed by Thomas Heatherwick and opened in October 2018
The two Victorian coal drops sheds were used to receive coal from South Yorkshire and trans-ship it to narrowboats on the Regents Canal and to horse-drawn carts
coal drops were redundant and fell into decay. They were used as warehouse units
one was gutted by fire in 1985 and another used by Bagley's nightclub, which closed in 2007. The night clubs complemented a vibrant night life of easy drug access, raves and prostitution.
The Regent's Canal was named in 1820 after the Prince Regent, who became George IV the same year. After his demise, the Kings Cross monument was raised at the junction of New Road and Battlebridge Road (Euston Road and York Way)
In 1986 the rave scene started in London. Disused warehouses were used to stage illegal raves, a form of partying fuelled by House music from Chicago and the illicit drug ecstasy. The scene developed and spawned several legal clubs such as The Clink, Shoom and Heaven and by the early-to-mid 1990s became centred on three bars in King's Cross. There was Billy Reilly's bar, 'Fabric' under the arches of the Coal Offices (which inspired a successor club, also called Fabric), 'The Cross' and 'Bagley's', which took over three floors at the southern end of the Eastern Coal Drops
Argent Group, the overall developer for the King's Cross Central site, appointed Thomas Heatherwick as architect for the redevelopment of the Coal Drop Yards as a retail park in 2014. Heatherwick worked in conjunction with engineers Arup, and the plans were approved in December 2015. BAM Nuttall undertook the construction work, which started in February 2016, following a two-year pre-construction phase to survey the condition of the Victorian era buildings and carry out demolition work as necessary.

Plans continue to develop for the full refurbishment of Stockton Heath swing bridge, with works targeted to take place next year.
The works will involve Peel Ports investing around ?6million in undertaking a complete structural, mechanical, electrical refurbishment and repainting programme to improve the longevity of this key asset.
The swing bridge, across the Manchester Ship Canal, links Stockton Heath village to the town centre and the north.
Peel Ports and Warrington Borough Council are in advanced discussions for the major refurbishment works to begin in April 2023. This date has been chosen in order to ensure that there is sufficient time for preparations to be made for these works, to ensure that their impact can be mitigated as much as possible.
However, it is clear that these essential works will cause considerable disruption, and both Peel Ports and the council feel it is vital to give as much warning time as possible of the planned works.
The chosen start date will also ensure that the majority of the works are undertaken during more favourable weather conditions. In addition, the inclusion of the summer holidays in the works period (where traffic flows and associated disruption will also be reduced), aims to minimise disruption to children travelling to and from school.
Peel Ports estimate that the works will take approximately nine months to complete and have ensured 12 months' notice to communicate this so bridge users can make alternative arrangements during this time.
Their appointed contractor has looked at all options to undertake these works while maintaining some access for people to cross the bridge. However, due to the extent of the refurbishment, the works can only be carried out safely with the bridge being completely closed to all users, including pedestrians, cyclists

The famed mosaic artworks that once adorned Manchester's alternative shopping emporium Afflecks are to return ? with acclaimed Manc artist Mark Kennedy to create a host of new works piece by piece
Mark's mosaic masterpieces of city icons like music impressario Tony Wilson, footballer George Best and Smiths frontman Morrissey became a much-loved city landmark hung on the exterior of Afflecks ? but when the site was taken over by developer Bruntwood in 2008 they were kept by the previous manager.
But now Mark tells The Diary he has been commissioned to create a raft of new mosaics that will once again decorate the arches of the old building that corners a huge site off Oldham Street, Tib Street and Dale Street in the Northern Quarter.
He says: I suppose my artwork is Afflecks, that's what I do, it's what I'm known for. It has been my gallery for the past 12 years or so, so obviously I'm happy to be asked back.
The first, that depicts the famous On The Sixth Day God Created Man...Chester quote, will return this week on the Afflecks Arcade.
And Mark, pictured here in his studio, is now hard at work on the second, an image of labrador Bruce, who the Black Dog Ballroom bar in the basement of Afflecks is named after.
Mark then has plans to create new mosaics of Manc icons, including a special Factory Records piece, to commemorate the label's late, great Tony Wilson, New Order manager Rob Gretton and legendary music producer Martin Hannett, among others

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A0TWPC - A polling place is where voters cast their ballots in elections.
The phrase polling station is also used in American English and in British English, although polling place is the building and polling station is the specific room (or part of a room) where voters cast their votes. A polling place can contain one or more polling stations.
Since elections generally take place over a one- or two-day span on a periodic basis, often annual or longer, polling places are usually located in facilities used for other purposes, such as schools, churches, sports halls, local government offices, or even private homes, and may each serve a similar number of people. The area may be known as a ward, precinct, polling district or constituency. The polling place is staffed by officials (who may be called election judges, returning officers or other titles) who monitor the voting procedures and assist voters with the election process. Scrutineers (or poll-watchers) are independent or partisan observers who attend the poll to ensure the impartiality of the process.
The facility will be open between specified hours depending on the type of election, and political activity by or on behalf of those standing in the ballot is usually prohibited within the venue and immediately surrounding area.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55HW0 - Everton Football Club is an English professional association football club based in Liverpool that competes in the Premier League, the top tier of English football. The club was a founder member of the Football League in 1888, and has, as of May 2023, competed in the top division for a record 120 seasons, having missed only four top-flight seasons (1930?31, 1951?52, 1952?53, and 1953?54). Everton is the club with the second-longest continuous presence in English top-flight football, and ranks third in the all-time points rankings. The club has won nine league titles, five FA Cups, one European Cup Winners' Cup and nine Charity Shields.
Formed in 1878, Everton won their first League Championship during the 1890?91 season. After winning four more League championships and two FA Cups, the club experienced a post-Second World War lull until a revival in the 1960s. A period of sustained success came in the mid-1980s, when Everton won a further two League championships, one FA Cup, and the 1985 European Cup Winners' Cup. The club's most recent major trophy was the 1995 FA Cup.
The club's supporters are colloquially known as Evertonians or Blues. Everton's main rivals are Liverpool, whose home stadium at Anfield is just under one mile away from Everton's home at Goodison Park
the two clubs contest the Merseyside derby. Everton have been based at Goodison Park since 1892, having moved from their original home at Anfield following a disagreement over its rent. The club's home colours are royal blue shirts with white shorts and socks.
Goodison Park is a football stadium in the Walton area of Liverpool, England, 2 miles (3 km) north of the city centre. It has been the home of Premier League club Everton since 1892 and has an all-seated capacity of 39,414.
Goodison Park has hosted more top-flight games than any other stadium in England. It has also been the venue for an FA Cup Final and numerous international fixtures, including a semi-final match in the 1966 World Cup

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BCTGHP - The 6th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment, was a Territorial Force (TF) unit of the British Army. Formed in 1908 from Volunteer units recruited in Cheshire since 1859, it was one of the first TF units to go to the Western Front in World War I. It had a wandering existence, moving frequently from one command to another, seeing a considerable amount of combat at the Somme, Ypres, during the German Spring Offensive and in the final Allied Hundred Days Offensive. After the war it was amalgamated into a local artillery regiment.
An invasion scare in 1859 led to the emergence of the Volunteer Movement, and Rifle Volunteer Corps (RVCs) began to be organised throughout Great Britain to supplement the Regular Army and Militia. A large number of small RVCs were formed in Cheshire and formed into five administrative battalions. The 4th Administrative Battalion, based at Stockport, comprised the following units:
9th (Mottram) Cheshire RVC, raised at Mottram in Longendale 10 February 1860 under Captain Alfred K. Sidebottom, disbanded February 1861
13th (Dukinfield) Cheshire RVC, 20 February 1860 under Capt Francis Dukinfield Palmer Astley, was raised by the Astley family who owned the coalmines at Dukinfield, and known unofficially as the 'Astley Rifles'
a 2nd Company was formed on 15 November 1860 and a 3rd in March 1869
headquarters moved to Newton Moor, near Hyde, in 1863, then to Stalybridge in 1873
17th (Stockport) Cheshire RVC, 20 August 1860 under Capt Henry Coppock
18th (Stockport) Cheshire RVC, 12 March 1860 under Capt John Thomas Emmerson
19th (Stockport) Cheshire RVC, 15 March 1860 under Capt Samuel W. Wilkinson

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BCTGPE - Britain's ugliest building: Winner of the Carbuncle Cup 2018 revealed
Redrock Stockport, a leisure complex which cost a whopping ?45 million, has been named Britain's ugliest building of 2018.
The structure, just south of Manchester includes a ten-screen cinema, restaurants, bars, retail and a 340 space multi-storey car park across 75,000 ft? of space.
The complex faced some fierce eyesore competition from various building structures.
The original nominator slated it as one of the most horrendous architectural responses ever conceived for Greater Manchester.
The Carbuncle Cup was established by Building Design (BD) in 2006 as a light-hearted way of drawing attention to a serious problem - the bad architecture blighting the country's town and cities.
The Carbuncle Cup: Britain's ugliest buildings decided
The judges, chaired by BD's editor Thomas Lane, took readers' comments into account during the judging process.
These included: Absolute monstrosity. I've seen better-looking prisons.
The building was designed by BDP for the local council and is part of a wider ?1 billion regeneration project for the community - but judges said the shed-like building ridiculed the town centre.
One judge even went as far in saying: You feel sorry for the people of Stockport.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy R9GTAY - Badgers and the law
If you're concerned that someone has done something illegal to a wild animal, please call RSPCA 24-hour Cruelty line on 0300 1234 999 - or contact the police.
Badgers are protected and so are the setts (burrows) they live in. Under the Protection of Badgers Act 1992, in England and Wales (the law is different in Scotland) it is an offence to:
Wilfully kill, injure or take a badger (or attempt to do so).
Cruelly ill-treat a badger.
Dig for a badger.
Intentionally or recklessly damage or destroy a badger sett, or obstruct access to it.
Cause a dog to enter a badger sett.
Disturb a badger when it is occupying a sett.
But there are exceptions. Licences to undertake some actions can be issued if it is justified, for example where a badger sett is found on a proposed site for a road or housing development.
Bulldozing a sett in the way of a new road would risk killing or injuring the badgers, so Natural England or Natural Resources Wales may grant a licence allowing the badgers to be carefully excluded, making them move elsewhere in their territory.
For information about the badger cull visit our Bovine tuberculosis page. Defra's policy on reducing bovine tuberculosis can be found on their website.
THE RSPCA 'Living with badgers' factsheet provides more information and detailed advice is available in Natural England's advisory leaflets.
Protecting badgers
Badgers were given some limited protection in 1973 but weaknesses in the law meant that badger setts were still being dug, bulldozed, blocked or the animals cruelly killed.
The RSPCA successfully campaigned for better protection and help enforce the law by assisting with police investigations or prosecuting people involved in wildlife crime such as badger digging and baiting.
Undercover RSPCA inspectors have helped bring a number of successful badger digging cases before the courts.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HE7MF1 - Buckfast Tonic Wine, commonly known as Buckfast or Buckie, is a fortified wine with caffeine, licensed from Buckfast Abbey in Devon and distributed by J. Chandler & Company in the United Kingdom and Grants of Ireland in Ireland.
The drink has become a subject of controversy in Scotland due to its links with ned culture
a senior politician labelled it as a badge of pride amongst those who are involved in antisocial behaviour.
Buckfast is very popular in Scotland, the sales of the product were monitored in 2014 by the Scottish government to see if the Buckfast Triangle still stood. The test showed that the towns and cities where Buckfast was sold highest per capita were, in order, Glasgow and the surrounding areas, East Kilbride, Hamilton, Cambuslang, and Coatbridge, all of which are in the northern areas of Lanarkshire, excepting Glasgow.
Several Scottish politicians and social activists have singled out Buckfast Tonic Wine as being particularly responsible for crime, disorder, and general social deprivation in these communities. Although Buckfast accounts for only 0.5% of alcohol sales in Scotland, the figure is markedly higher in Lanarkshire. Helen Liddell, former Secretary of State for Scotland, called for the wine to be banned. In 2005, Scottish Justice Minister Cathy Jamieson suggested that retailers should stop selling the wine. On a subsequent visit to Auchinleck within her constituency, she was greeted by teenagers chanting, Don't ban Buckie. Jamieson then received correspondence from lawyers acting for Buckfast distributors, J. Chandler & Company, in Andover. A further consequence was that Buckfast sales increased substantially in the months following Jamieson's comments

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GJ79A2 - From the Ben Robinson interview,Afflecks Palace In Pieces Once More
SELF-made Manchester mosaicist Mark Kennedy has had seven mosaic art pieces installed on Tib Street along the wall of Affleck's Palace. The colourful and cracked pieces feature the likes of Eric Cantona, Colin Bell, Karl Marx, Morrissey, Ian Brown, Emmeline Pankhurst, Bet Lynch and many other 'legends' associated with Manchester.
In total Kennedy has spent almost 20 years crafting the two sets of mosaics amongst other on-going work. The theme on Affleck's is Manchester heroes, with a nod given the shopping bazaar's rock'n'roll past. Thus among the great figures of Manchester depicted there are musicians, actors, media and radical politicians.
He also couldn't help including something from his own Manchester memories of Tib Street.
When I was a little kid I used to go to Tib Street all the time to get my ferrets and buy mice from a little pet shop and that's where we all used to go. Next door was Tib Street Joke Shop that used to sell masks and stink bombs so there's one piece that represents all that.
You have to have a closer look at some of the new mosaics to fully appreciate them with some of them holding a few hidden surprises. Kennedy's take on Joy Division's classic Unknown Pleasures album cover features several tiny coloured tile fragments to set it apart from the now iconic original.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY5KDM - Pork rind is the skin (rind) of a pig. Pork rind is a common ingredient of sausages, which helps to improve their consistency. Fried or roasted pork rind and fat is also a snack. The frying renders much of the fat that is attached to the uncooked rind, causing the cooked product to reduce considerably in size. The product may be known by alternative names, such as pork scratchings or pork crackling in the UK, although the term crackling may also refer to the rind atop a roasted pork joint

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED4KYM - Around ten Walsall College students and apprentices will be offered the unique chance to put their stamp on the new Walsall Business and Sports Hub (WBSH) scheme. It follows an agreement made between the College and Interserve Construction (part of the international support services and construction group Interserve), which is leading on the development. There is also an opportunity for at least 20 students to get involved in work placements in the wider Interserve operation including business administration and project-based work experience.
Students will start their placements with Interserve by January and they will see both traditional and modern construction techniques whilst working closely alongside project and support staff as well as learning valuable employability skills.
Construction work, which started at the end of August, remains on schedule ahead of the official opening in September 2015. Heavy goods vehicles are expected to make the first delivery of steelwork this week as the new build begins to take shape.
The state-of-the-art development, adjacent to Walsall College's main ?64 million Wisemore Campus on Littleton Street West, will include a business incubation centre for start-up businesses, sports hall with badminton courts to Sport England standards, dance and fitness studios, sports training and injury clinic and a fine dining restaurant. It forms part of Walsall Council's long-term ?400 million Gigaport initiative, which is creating business and office development along the ring road corridor.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy E6HY4W - Being healthy is also about what you eat - choosing the right food. It is important to enjoy the food you eat - and eating in a healthier way may even be cheaper!
Our food is filled with colours, salt, hidden sugar and other elements.
There is a direct relationship between your level of physical activity and how much energy you use up from the food you eat. If you eat more than you use the surplus energy is stored as body fat
this means you will become overweight which in itself increases your risk of disease and disability.
The risks to you: Coronary Heart Disease, high blood pressure, non-insulin dependent diabetes, constipation, joint pain, being out of breath. Your risks multiply if you eat too much animal fat, smoke, drink alcohol and take very little exercise

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4980395604 - 'Tenement Funster - 'Queen' - Play this track here.
\u00bfWhats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
A cracking track that took me back to my schooldays, turned up in todays shuffle on my iPod.
'Tenement Funster' is Roger Taylor's song on the Sheer Heart Attack album. He sang the lead vocals. Backing track consisted of Taylor's drums, Mercury's piano, Deacon's bass and May's Red Special guitar. It's a typical Taylor track about youth and rebellion. It also includes echo effects with May's guitar, like in 'Brighton Rock'. The last couple of guitar notes overlap into 'Flick Of The Wrist'. The original working title for the song was 'Tin Dreams'.
Sheer Heart Attack is the third album by British rock group Queen, released November 1974. It was produced by Queen and Roy Thomas Baker for EMI in the United Kingdom, and Elektra in the US.
The album launched the band to mainstream popularity both in the UK and internationally and at a time when I was at secondary school. My school bag had a big 'Queen' and 'Led Zep' logo scrawled on it. Due to a lack of cash (or bigger brothers) in my house, my school friends and older brothers often supplied the vinyl in a gatefold sleeve, on loan.
The first single, 'Killer Queen' reached #2 in the British charts and provided Queen with their first US Top 20 hit. Sheer Heart Attack was also the first Queen album to hit the US Top 20, peaking at #12 in 1975. Digressing from the progressive themes featured on their first two albums, Sheer Heart Attack featured more conventional rock tracks and marked a step towards the classic Queen sound.
In recent years, it has been listed by multiple publications as one of the band's best works and I would recommend it as a starting point to listen to some of the legacy of early queen.
------------------------
Many tower blocks were built in the UK after the Second World War. The first residential tower block, 'The Lawn' was constructed in Harlow, Essex in 1951
it is now a Grade II listed building. In many cases Tower Blocks were seen as a 'quick-fix' to cure problems caused by crumbling and unsanitary 19th century dwellings or to replace buildings destroyed by German aerial bombing. Initially, they were welcomed, and their excellent views made them popular living places.
Later, as the buildings themselves deteriorated, they grew a reputation for being undesirable low cost housing, and many tower blocks saw rising crime levels, increasing their unpopularity. One response to this was the great increase in the number of housing estates built, which in turn brings its own problems. In the UK, tower blocks particularly lost popularity after the partial collapse of Ronan Point in 1968.
Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland, is believed to contain the highest concentration of tower blocks in the UK - examples include the Hutchensontown C blocks in the Gorbals, the 20-storey blocks in Sighthill, and the 31-storey Red Road flats in the city's north east. However, on the whole, London has the largest number of high-rise residential buildings in the UK
Greater Manchester had more than its fair share of tower blocks, one of the worst examples being in Hulme. In Hulme, a new and (at the time) innovative design for deck access and tower living was attempted. This consisted of curved rows of low-rise flats with deck access far above the streets was created, known as the 'Crescents' (which were, with unintentional irony, architecturally based on terraced housing in Bath).
In this arrangement, motor vehicles remained on ground level with pedestrians on concrete walkways overhead, above the smoke and fumes of the street. People living in these new flats were rehoused from decaying Victorian slums which lacked electricity, running water, bathrooms or indoor toilets, and were mostly overcrowded.
The names of the 'Crescents' harked back to the Georgian era, being named after architects of that time: Robert Adam Crescent, Charles Barry Crescent, William Kent Crescent and John Nash Crescent, together with Hawksmoor Close (a small straight block of similar design attached to Charles Barry Crescent). At the time, the 'Crescents' won several design awards, and introduced technologies such as underfloor heating to the masses.
They were also popular because they were some of the first council homes in Manchester to have central heating. The development even had some notable first occupants, such as Nico and Alain Delon.
This is an old shot of mine, but thankfully a lot of this system built housing has now been replaced or renovated in Manchester. The local city council and its housing associations like City South HA that covers Hulme are on track for a high proportion of dwellings to meet Decent Homes standard by this years target.
This was a three shot panorama shot in infra-red.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55HW2 - Everton Football Club is an English professional association football club based in Liverpool that competes in the Premier League, the top tier of English football.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K0GFA9 - 15% of landlords surveyed have no knowledge of the upcoming changes to EPC rules
Properties risk becoming ?unrentable' if landlords do not make necessary changes
More than a third (36%) of landlords say their rentals were built pre-1940
4 in 10 landlords say their London properties were built pre-1940, similarly in the South West, Scotland and Wales
1 in 7 (15%) landlords surveyed have no knowledge of the upcoming legislative changes to the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), according to new research from Shawbrook Bank.*
From 2025, all newly rented properties will be required to have an EPC rating of C or above. Currently properties only require an EPC rating of ?E' or above. Existing tenancies will have until 2028 to comply with the new rule changes.
As a result, millions of properties risk potentially being declared ?unrentable' and subsequently ?unsellable' or ?unmortgageable' due to landlords being uninformed about what the changes will mean for current and prospective tenancies.
Landlords currently unaware of the level of work needed on their property, or properties, could be risking a loss in income until all necessary work is carried out. In severe cases, where a substantial amount of work needs to be done to improve a property's EPC rating, landlords could find themselves unable to secure appropriate financial support to carry out the works. A quarter (25%) of landlords surveyed said they had little to no knowledge of the forthcoming changes, with long-time landlords ? those who have been renting out properties for over 10 years ? found to be less aware of the changes and what impact this could have on their properties.
With a large proportion (36%) of landlords with properties built pre-1940, Shawbrook's analysis suggests that a significant number of landlords will be required to make changes.
Delving deeper into what this means on a regional level, four in 10 landlords say that their properties in London were built prior to 1940

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ECW4E6 - While a cultural revolution was underway in '60s society, a color revolution was taking place in UK and American bathrooms. Avocado green and other colors were all the rage beginning in the late '60s and lasting through the late '70s for bathroom tubs, sinks and toilets. Over the years, avocado bathroom suites went out of style, but not all of them went away. If your home has a bathroom with avocado fixtures, you have several options for giving it an update.
Retro Avocado Bathroom Suites
If you inherited a bathroom with avocado green fixtures from your home's previous owners, try taking an if-you-can't-beat-them-join-them approach. Embrace your bathroom's retro vibe and decorate it 1970s style. Paint the walls pale green and choose mod-print fabrics for the shower curtain and window treatments. You want the end result to look retro and cool, not dated and dingy, so choose accessories that are authentic, but in good condition.
Search secondhand stores for wall art, vanity mirrors and other period pieces and give them a good cleaning before putting them on display. To complete the look, cover the floor with a fluffy green rug and illuminate the vanity with vintage sconces or pendant lamps.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K7NBKW - The White Rose of York (Latinised as rosa alba, blazoned as a rose argent) is a white heraldic rose which was adopted in the 14th century as a heraldic badge of the royal House of York. In modern times it is used more broadly as a symbol of Yorkshire.
The symbolism of the white rose has religious connotations as (like the white lily) it represents the purity of the Virgin Mary, one of whose many titles in the Roman Catholic faith is the Mystical Rose of Heaven. In Christian liturgical iconography white is the symbol of light, typifying innocence, purity, joy and glory.
The white rose was first adopted as a heraldic badge by Edmund of Langley, 1st Duke of York (1341?1402), the fourth surviving son of King Edward III of England. One of his elder brothers, John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster (1340?1399) adopted a red rose as a heraldic badge, the red rose of Lancaster. Their respective descendants fought for control of the throne of England during several decades of civil warfare, which became known as the Wars of the Roses, after the badges of the two competing cadet royal houses.
The Tudor Rose of England
The Wars of the Roses were ended by King Henry VII of England who, upon marrying Elizabeth of York, symbolically but not politically, united the White and Red Roses to create the Tudor Rose, the symbol of the English Monarchy. In the late 17th century the Jacobites took up the White Rose of York as their emblem, celebrating White Rose Day on 10 June, the anniversary of the birth of The Old Pretender in 1688
In heraldry The Rose of York is blazoned as A rose argent barbed and seeded proper (a white rose with sepals and seeds in their natural colours). According to the College of Heralds, the heraldic rose may be used with either a petal at the top or if slightly rotated with a sepal at the top. Traditionally the rose is displayed with a petal at the top in the North Riding and West Riding but with a sepal at the top in the East Riding of Yorkshire
