Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8PTY0 - A bronze statue of Long Boi stands beside the lake near Derwent College at the University of York, commemorating the unusually tall campus duck who became a student mascot, local celebrity and internet favourite. Long Boi was widely described as a mallard and Indian runner duck cross, known for his extraordinary height, long neck, friendly presence and regular appearances around the university's lakes and green spaces. The sculpture was created after a crowdfunding campaign led by the students' union, with the University of York saying £5,300 was raised and that the statue was unveiled by BBC Radio 1 presenter Greg James on 26 September 2024. University publicity says the life-sized bronze was hand carved in clay by award-winning wildlife sculptor Neil Mason before being cast in bronze, and that it stands near the lake at Derwent College, one of Long Boi's favourite haunts. The image is commercially useful for stories about university life, campus culture, student humour, memorial sculpture, public art, crowdfunding, social media fame, animal mascots, British eccentricity and the emotional role of wildlife in shared places. It can also illustrate the University of York's distinctive lakeside campus, where ducks, geese and other waterfowl form part of the everyday student experience. The statue's plinth, plaque, bronze finish, lawns, college buildings and live geese in the background give the photograph strong documentary value as a real memorial rather than a generic animal sculpture. Long Boi's story is useful for features on internet culture, community affection, grief, silliness, public memory and how a much-loved animal can become part of an institution's identity. As a stock image, it records a quirky but meaningful piece of contemporary campus heritage, showing how humour, affection and student folklore can be given permanent form in bronze.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RECE3M - The Garrard Engineering and Manufacturing Company of Swindon, Wiltshire, was a British company that was famous for producing high-quality gramophone turntables. It was formed by the jewellers Garrard & Co in 1915. The company was sold to Plessey, an electronics conglomerate, in 1960. During the period 1976-1978, Garrard developed demonstrators of the novel video disc technology. Although the team recognised the future potential of this data storage technology, Plessey chose not to invest. After several years in decline, Garrard was sold by Plessey to Gradiente Electronics of Brazil in 1979 and series production was moved to Brazil (Manaus). The remaining Garrard research and development operation in Swindon was reduced to a skeleton operation until completely shut down in 1992. Then, Gradiente licensed the Garrard name to Terence O'Sullivan, who operated as Loricraft Audio, in 1997.
Between 1992 and 1997, the Garrard brand name was licensed to other companies in the US, which imported electronic items built by different, unrelated Far Eastern manufacturers. These included Garrard branded cassette decks, CD players, stereo receivers, portable radio/cassette players, portable Walkman type cassette players, serial-port printer cables, universal TV/audio remote controls, and other miscellany, including turntables that had no connection with any original Garrard design.
In 2018, Cadence Audio SA, who also own the British turntable and tonearm manufacturer SME Limited, took ownership of the Garrard brand and registered trademarks when they purchased Loricraft Audio Ltd. The business was restructured to run under the name of Garrard Turntables UK Ltd.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K23M5K - The 405-line monochrome analogue television broadcasting system was the first fully electronic television system to be used in regular broadcasting. The number of television lines influences the image resolution, or quality of the picture.
It was introduced with the BBC Television Service in 1936, suspended for the duration of World War II, and remained in operation in the UK until 1985. It was also used between 1961 and 1982 in Ireland, as well as from 1957 to 1973 for the Rediffusion Television cable service in Hong Kong.
Sometimes called the Marconi-EMI system, it was developed in 1934 by the EMI Research Team led by Isaac Shoenberg. The figure of 405 lines had been chosen following discussions over Sunday lunch at the home of Alan Blumlein. The system used interlacing
EMI had been experimenting with a 243-line all-electronic interlaced system since 1933. In the 405 system the scanning lines were broadcast in two complementary fields, 50 times per second, creating 25 frames per second. The actual image was 376 lines high and interlaced, with additional unused lines making the frame up to 405 lines to give the slow circuitry time to prepare for the next frame
in modern terms it would be described as 376i.
At the time of its introduction the 405-line system was referred to as high definition “ which it was, compared to earlier systems, although of lower definition than 625-line and later standards.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTJ9BW - Bush is a British consumer electronics brand owned by J Sainsbury plc (Sainsbury's), the parent company of the retailer Argos. The former Bush company is one of the most famous manufacturers of early British radios. The company is now defunct, but the Bush brand name survives as a private label brand for budget electronics. Today, all Bush are sold exclusively at Argos and Sainsbury's, with Argos having a wider selection
The Bush DAC90a radio was introduced in 1950. This model superseded the DAC90 and uses smaller valves and a completely redesigned chassis.
The Bush DAC90A is probably the most sought after and collected vintage valve radio of our time. This is because it's easy to use, it's compact, it doesn't need an external aerial, and it looks good and works well. Once restored, these radios are also extremely reliable and can be used every day without problems. It's a four valve plus rectifier superhet with a well laid out chassis housed in a beautiful Bakelite cabinet. Unlike some radios, there's nothing complex about the design. This is a well designed and well built radio, two attributes which result in reliability.
The Bush DAC90A Radio “ Variants & Versions
There were several versions of the famous Bush DAC90A radio. The radios were basically the same but the dial glasses and knobs differed. The cabinets also varied from ivory to brown or black Bakelite.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JWB54K - Teletubbies is a British children's television series created by Anne Wood and Andrew Davenport for the BBC. The programme focuses on four differently coloured characters known as the Teletubbies, named after the television screens on their bellies. Recognised throughout popular culture for the uniquely shaped antenna protruding from the head of each character, the Teletubbies communicate through gibberish and were designed to bear resemblance to toddlers
Tinky Winky (played by Dave Thompson and Simon Shelton in the original series and by Jeremiah Krage in the revival series) is the first Teletubby, as well as the largest and oldest of the group. He is covered in purple terrycloth and has a triangular antenna on his head. He often carries a red bag.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JC40WD - Climbing Wall, Barry Island Eastern Promenade
If you were to fly into Cardiff Airport these days on a clear day and look towards Barry Island, you would see the words YNYS Y BARRI BARRY ISLAND writ large on the wall along the Eastern Promenade. The large scale letters have been formed from colourful, quirky climbing holds and other acrylic shapes of buckets, trains, flip flops, ice cream cones, anchors, fish
The 2014 Celfwaith commission to create a climbing wall was part of a major refurbishment scheme on Barry Island, including structural works to the Eastern end of the Promenade
Early in 2014 Celfwaith appointed Becky Adams to collaborate on consultation meetings and workshops with youth groups at Area 41 and Barry Island, pupils at Barry Island Primary School, and the Barry Island Historical Society.
Gordon Young was appointed to create the climbing wall and had previous experience of creating climbing and bouldering structures in Blackpool. However, his proposal for Barry Island was completely different and captured the fun, colourful and tongue-in-cheek character of the place popularised by Gavin & Stacey.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59XA5 - Salford Quays is an area of Salford, Greater Manchester, England, near the end of the Manchester Ship Canal. Previously the site of Manchester Docks, it faces Trafford across the canal.
History
Aerial photograph showing Salford Quays with Manchester (top) and Trafford (bottom)
Built by the Manchester Ship Canal Company, Salford Docks was the larger of two that made up Manchester Docks, the other being Pomona Docks to the east, which opened in 1903.[1] They were opened in 1894 by Queen Victoria and spanned 120 acres (49 ha) of water and 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land. At their height, the Manchester Docks was the third-busiest port in Britain, but after containerisation and the limit placed on vessel size on the Manchester Ship Canal, the docks declined in the 1970s. They closed in 1982, resulting in the loss of 3,000 jobs.
In 1983, Salford City Council acquired parts of the docks covering 220 acres (90 ha) from the Manchester Ship Canal Company with the aid of a derelict land grant. The area was rebranded as Salford Quays and redevelopment by Urban Waterside began in 1985 under the Salford Quays Development Plan.
Early in the planning stages for redevelopment of Salford Quays in 1988, potential was recognised for a landmark arts venue, the Salford Quays Centre for the Performing Arts, which became known as the Lowry Project in 1994. It had secured £64 million in funding by 22 February 1996.
The Lowry stands at the end of Pier 8, largely surrounded by the waters of the Manchester Ship Canal. Designed by James Stirling and Michael Wilford, it opened on 28 April 2000 and houses the 1,730 seat Lyric theatre, the 466 seat Quays theatre, studio spaces and 17,330 sq ft (1,610 m2) of gallery space. There are cafes, bars and a restaurant at the south-western end of the building. The centre is associated with L. S. Lowry, and houses a collection of his work

For contacts outside the UK, the Shipping Forecast is a four-times-daily BBC Radio broadcast of weather reports and forecasts for the seas around the coasts of the British Isles. It is produced by the Met Office.
Many people find the well-known repetition of the names of the sea areas almost hypnotic, particularly during the bedtime (for Britain) broadcast at 00:48 UK time. It is regarded with affection by many listeners, and in the United Kingdom often pops up in pub quizzes.
The zones start near the isle of Mull in Scotland and progress clockwise around Shetland, Tyne, Dover, Portland and through Shannon and the Irish sea. The General Synopsis is read, giving the position, pressure (in millibars) and track of pressure areas (e.g. Low, Viking, 981, deepening rapidly, expected North Utsire 964 by 0700 tomorrow).
BBC Radio 4 is the choice for the Shipping Forecast as it is a speech-based channel and broadcasts via longwave on 198 kHz as well as FM, and the longwave signal can be received clearly at sea all around the British Isles regardless of time of day or radio conditions. DAB radio is unlikely to cut the mustard for this one.
The Shipping Forecast is intended to be read at dictation speed to aid those who wish to write down the information. After all for many mariners, your life and that of your crew may well depend on it.
many musicians have name checked it. Notably one of my faves, (Yorkshire Anachists) Chumbawamba on the 'The Good Ship Lifestyle', on the album Tubthumper. It starts out with a listing of the sea areas in the wrong order. How anarchist(!). Beck includes a 27-second sample five minutes into the track 'The Horrible Fanfare, Landslide, Exoskeleton' on the album The Information too. Jethro Tull pn the album Stormwatch also predictably samples it.
All but two of the characters in the UK ITV cartoon 'The Adventures of Portland Bill' were named after the shipping areas or coastal weather stations. If you do the odd pub quiz, leave me a comment and I will let you know by Flickr mail if you are correct!

Apparently these were not originally a London thing.
First public police telephones of this type, although red in Britain were introduced in Glasgow in 1891. Gas lanterns were attached to the roof so to signal for instructions. The Metropolitan Police (Met) introduced police boxes throughout London between 1928 and 1937. These boxes were not made of wood as would first seem. The original MacKenzie Trench blueprints indicate that the material for the shell of the box is 'concrete' with only the door being made of teak hardwood.
A little heater was supplied as the boxes would have been notoriously cold. By 1953 there were 685 police boxes on the streets of London. In the late 1960's they were killed by the advent of the walkie-talkie. Some still survive and have been converted into High Street coffee bars. When I am up in Edinburgh I see quite a few, though quite a few are in various states of disrepair. Edinburgh's boxes are often ornate with faux neoclassical decoration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HDB6 - A police box is a British telephone kiosk or callbox located in a public place for the use of members of the police, or for members of the public to contact the police. Unlike an ordinary callbox, its telephone is located behind a hinged door so it can be used from the outside, and the interior of the box is, in effect, a miniature police station for use by police officers.
Police boxes predate the era of mobile telecommunications
now British police officers carry two-way radios and/or mobile phones rather than relying on fixed kiosks. Most boxes are now disused or have been withdrawn from service.
The typical police box contained a telephone linked directly to the local police station, allowing patrolling officers to keep in contact with the station, reporting anything unusual or requesting help if necessary. A light on top of the box would flash to alert an officer that he/she was requested to contact the station.[2]:2 Members of the public could also use the phone to contact a police station in an emergency.
British police boxes were usually blue, except in Glasgow, where they were red until the late 1960s.:13 In addition to a telephone, they contained equipment such as an incident book and a first aid kit.:14 Today the image of the blue police box is widely associated with the science fiction television programme Doctor Who, in which the protagonist's time machine, a TARDIS, is in the shape of a 1960s British police box. In the context of a TARDIS, the image of the blue police box is a trademark of the BBC.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEXEH8 - Lowry Salford Quays Millennium Lift Footbridge at dusk, early evening.
The Salford Quays lift bridge or Salford Quays Millennium footbridge is a 91.2-metre long vertical lift bridge bridge spanning the Manchester Ship Canal in Salford, Greater Manchester, England. The bridge, which was completed in 2000, is near the terminus of the ship canal at the old Manchester Docks. It links Salford Quays to MediaCityUK and has a lift of 18 metres, allowing large watercraft to pass beneath.
The bridge features prominently on the backdrop for the BBC North West Tonight television news programme, which also shows The Lowry and MediaCityUK.
