Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ER9NFR - Electronic ticket barriers line the bright passenger concourse at Haymarket railway station in Edinburgh, Scotland. The wide interior is covered by a curved glazed roof, allowing daylight into the modern entrance hall, while the older stone station building remains visible beyond the gateline. Travellers approach and pass through the automated barriers using paper tickets, smartcards or compatible digital tickets, with yellow readers mounted on each gate. Several barrier panels carry colourful artwork, adding visual interest to the functional transport setting.
Haymarket is Edinburgh's second major railway station after Waverley and serves commuter, regional and long-distance services. It is particularly important for journeys west and north from the capital, including routes towards Glasgow, Stirling, Perth, Dundee, Aberdeen and the West Coast Main Line. The station is managed by ScotRail and has the National Rail code HYM. Its central location also provides connections with Edinburgh Trams, local buses, taxis and airport services, making it an important interchange for commuters, tourists and event crowds.
The original Haymarket station opened in 1842 as the Edinburgh terminus of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway. Its historic entrance and office block are protected as a listed building. A £25 million Network Rail redevelopment created a larger concourse, improved circulation, new lifts and step-free access, with the new main building officially opened in December 2013. The project retained the historic station frontage while adding the spacious glass-and-steel structure shown here.
This editorial image illustrates railway ticket control, fare collection, public transport infrastructure, passenger movement, station accessibility and investment in Scotland's rail network. It is also relevant to ticketless travel, contactless payment, transport security, urban mobility, sustainable travel and the modernisation of historic railway stations

The image includes branded locker banks for InPost, Evri, Amazon and other parcel services, lined up beside a local convenience store and community shop. It is a strong editorial image for stories about online shopping, mail order returns, courier networks, last-mile delivery, ecommerce logistics, parcel lockers, contact-free collection and the changing role of local shops as service hubs. The visible InPost slogan Collect it. Return it. Send it. directly reflects the way lockers are now used for returns, deliveries and sending parcels without needing a staffed counter. The green, red, grey and blue locker units add useful visual variety and clearly show how multiple delivery brands can cluster at one neighbourhood location, giving customers choice and extending parcel access beyond traditional post offices. The photograph is commercially useful for articles on Amazon returns, Evri drop-offs, InPost lockers, consumer convenience, 24-hour collection, failed home deliveries, sustainable logistics, reduced delivery miles, high street change and the pressure created by growing online retail. It can also illustrate local planning, parking, pavement space, shop footfall and the increasing use of corner shops as parcel collection points. The Thelwall and Warrington setting gives the image a grounded suburban context rather than a generic distribution-centre view. As a documentary stock image, it captures the practical point where digital shopping, courier networks and ordinary neighbourhood life meet, with automated lockers becoming part of the visible street furniture of modern British retail and delivery infrastructure.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RX17PT - A car wash, or auto wash is a facility used to clean the exterior, and in some cases the interior, of cars. Car washes can be self-service, full-service (with attendants who wash the vehicle), or fully automated (possibly connected to a filling station). Car washes may also be events where people pay to have their cars washed by volunteers, often using less specialized equipment, as a fundraiser
By the mid-1960s, Hanna Enterprises established itself as the main manufacturer of car washing equipment and materials. This includes the Wrap-Around Brush, Roller-on-demand Conveyor belt, soft cloth friction washing, several ways to wash the tires, and a recirculating water system.
The 1970s introduced the automatic wheel cleaner and the polish'n'wax
Conveyor-driven/tunnel car wash
The first conveyor-driven automatic car wash appeared in Hollywood, California in 1940. Conveyor-driven automatic car washes consist of tunnel-like buildings into which customers (or attendants) drive
A vehicle exiting the friction zone of the wash. Visible are side brushes, wrap-around brushes, the conveyor, and a high-pressure rinse arch.
The car wash will typically start cleaning with chemicals called presoaks applied through special arches. CTAs, or chemical tire applicators, apply specialized formulations, which remove brake dust and build-up from the surface of the wheels and tires.
At the end of a car wash's presoak a high-pressure arch may be used to direct water at the vehicle's surface.
The car is rinsed with fresh water immediately followed by a series of extra services if required. In many car washes, the first of these services is a polish wax. After the polish wax application is typically a retractable mitter or top brush and, in some cases, side brushes or wrap-around brushes. Next is a protectant, which creates a thin protective film over a vehicle's surface

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ABY91C - The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) is an automated light metro system primarily serving the redeveloped Docklands area of London and providing a direct connection between London's two major financial districts, Canary Wharf and the City of London. First opened on 31 August 1987, the DLR has been extended multiple times, giving a total route length of 38 km (24 miles). Lines now reach north to Stratford, south to Lewisham, west to Tower Gateway and Bank in the City of London financial district, and east to Beckton, London City Airport and Woolwich Arsenal. Further extensions are being considered.
Normal operations are automated, so there is minimal staffing on the 149 trains (which have no driving cabs) and at major interchange stations
the four below-ground stations are staffed, to comply with underground station health and safety regulations.
The DLR is currently operated by franchisee KeolisAmey Docklands for Transport for London (TfL). Passenger numbers have increased as the network has expanded since its launch. In the financial year 2019/20, there were 116.8 million passenger journeys.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BGHB36 - A robot is a machine”especially one programmable by a computer” capable of carrying out a complex series of actions automatically. Robots can be guided by an external control device or the control may be embedded within. Robots may be constructed on the lines of human form, but most robots are machines designed to perform a task with no regard to their aesthetics.
Robots can be autonomous or semi-autonomous and range from humanoids such as Honda's Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility (ASIMO) and TOSY's TOSY Ping Pong Playing Robot (TOPIO) to industrial robots, medical operating robots, patient assist robots, dog therapy robots, collectively programmed swarm robots, UAV drones such as General Atomics MQ-1 Predator, and even microscopic nano robots. By mimicking a lifelike appearance or automating movements, a robot may convey a sense of intelligence or thought of its own. Autonomous things are expected to proliferate in the coming decade, with home robotics and the autonomous car as some of the main drivers.
The branch of technology that deals with the design, construction, operation, and application of robots, as well as computer systems for their control, sensory feedback, and information processing is robotics. These technologies deal with automated machines that can take the place of humans in dangerous environments or manufacturing processes, or resemble humans in appearance, behavior, or cognition. Many of today's robots are inspired by nature contributing to the field of bio-inspired robotics. These robots have also created a newer branch of robotics: soft robotics.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DANJMR - Passenger help point at Slateford ScotRail railway station near Edinburgh, Scotland, photographed beside a white picket fence and leafy platform boundary in bright daylight. The image shows a yellow circular Help Point sign, a red and white assistance symbol, an orange and grey intercom unit, speaker grille and push button, with clear wording telling passengers to press the button and speak clearly for train information or emergency contact. The notice also warns that CCTV control is connected to the system and that misuse may result in prosecution. This is a strong editorial stock image for unstaffed railway stations, passenger safety, rail accessibility, help points, emergency communication, suburban transport, public information systems and the everyday infrastructure behind Scotland's railway network. Slateford is a suburban station in the west of Edinburgh, served by ScotRail trains on routes linking the city with Glasgow, Shotts, Carstairs and other parts of central Scotland. The help point is particularly relevant because smaller stations may not have staffed ticket offices or a visible member of staff on site, so passengers rely on signs, public address systems, CCTV, intercoms, live information displays and mobile travel apps to get assistance. The photograph can illustrate stories about public transport access, passenger confidence, lone travel, station security, disability support, service disruption, railway modernisation, transport funding and the tension between cost-saving staffing models and the need for reassurance at quieter stops. Visible details include the bold yellow sign, warning text, ScotRail reference, tactile height position, metal post, trees, gravel, fencing and clean platform-side setting. The image is useful for railway, safety, infrastructure, accessibility, customer service and Scottish transport themes, especially where a generic visual is needed for station assistance rather than trains themselves.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P8H0WW - A tablet screen shows Viagogo secondary marketplace checkout pages for Eurovision Song Contest 2023 Grand Final tickets at the former M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, with one ticket shown at £4,720 before fees for a live TV show that was one of the most sought-after UK entertainment events of the year. The image is a strong editorial concept for ticket resale, ticket touting, inflated prices, online marketplaces, consumer protection and fan anger over the cost of attending major concerts, festivals, sport and televised arena events. Eurovision 2023 was staged in Liverpool on behalf of Ukraine, with the Grand Final held on 13 May 2023, creating huge demand for tickets to the live shows and rehearsals. Official guidance said tickets were sold through Ticketmaster, while published event terms warned that tickets purchased by other means could be invalid. The visible Viagogo page, countdown timer, order details, £4,720 ticket price, booking fee wording and Eurovision branding make the photograph highly searchable for phrases including Eurovision tickets, Viagogo resale, secondary ticketing, ticket scalping, rip-off ticket prices, online checkout, fan exploitation, consumer rights, CMA enforcement, live event fraud risk and unauthorised resale. The image can illustrate news stories, investigations, policy articles, campaign material and opinion pieces about whether high-demand tickets should be capped at face value, how resale platforms present fees, the role of professional touts, bot buying, scarcity, dynamic pricing, unofficial sellers and the risks faced by fans desperate not to miss a one-off event. It also works for stories about digital marketplaces, booking fees, consumer law, entertainment inflation, the live music economy, culture wars over access to popular events, credit card protection, refund disputes, pressure selling, countdown timers, online harms, trust in ticket sites and public concern that ordinary fans are priced out by speculative resale.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJ0YXD - Cash use has been declining in Ireland in recent years, in particular during the pandemic. Central Bank statistics indicate that Irish ATM withdrawals were €13 billion in 2021, compared to €19.7 billion in 2019, a decline of 34 per cent.
The value of such withdrawals is now at about two-thirds of pre-pandemic levels, albeit they remain relatively stable at €1 billion per month.
Central Bank raises concerns at sale of Republic's ATM network
Regulator says 75% of network will be under control of unregulated entities by end of year as banks sell up
The Central Bank has raised concerns with the Government that three-quarters of Ireland's ATM network will no longer be under the control of retail banks by the end of the year.
The issue of the ATM network and the closure of bricks and mortar bank branches has been a political hot potato for the Government due to concerns around how older and more vulnerable cohorts of society might cope with such changes.
The regulator has outlined concerns on the matter in a submission to the Department of Finance's Retail Banking Review public consultation.
It said retail banks are selling their off-site ATMs to independent ATM deployers which, it noted, are unregulated . Just 25 per cent of Ireland's ATM network will be owned by retail banks by the end of the year compared to 100 per cent in 2015, it said.
In-branch services are also reducing, it said, with the number of bank branches countrywide set to reduce by 32 per cent compared to 2019.
The trend towards the withdrawal of cash and other in-branch services is being driven by commercial decision making, it said. We expect banks to ensure that the impact of their decisions are considered carefully and with a consumer-focused approach. The impact for all consumers, including those who are vulnerable, must be assessed by banks, to ensure changes to branches and in-branch services are undertaken in an orderly manner. We expect that vulnerable customers will be accomodated

Prime minister Rishi Sunak has promised the UK Government will make sure that we're doing everything we can do to tackle ticket touts after Eurovision tickets appeared on re-sale sites for as much as £9,000.
Labour MP Kevin Brennan raised the issue in Prime Minister's Questions today, 8 March. He said a report by BBC Radio 4's You and Yours had exposed queue jumping online touts that had purchased Eurovision tickets and put them on sale for thousands of pounds on dodgy sites like Viagogo .
In this year when we are hosting Eurovision on behalf of war ravaged Ukraine, this latest example of rampant rip-off culture in Tory Britain is particularly despicable. Why isn't his government doing more to support genuine fans over the spivs and ticket touts? asked Brennan.
In response Sunak said, I'm happy to look at the documentary and make sure that we're doing everything we can do, and I'll talk to the Home Secretary about it. But more generally, it is a source of enormous pride for us to host Eurovision. I know it's something that everyone is looking forward to and we should ensure that there is a broad as possible access to seeing that. And we'll do everything we can to make sure that that happens.
The Eurovision Song Contest 2023 is to be staged in Liverpool at the city's 11,000-capacity M&S Bank Arena on 9-13 May.
