Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3BKDJFF - Former brewery site: Stanhope Street, Liverpool, Merseyside, L8, England, UK
Higsons was a major Liverpool brewery founded in 1780, historically based on Stanhope Street in the Baltic Triangle area of the city. Brewing ceased in the 1990s, but the brand remains strongly associated with Liverpool brewing heritage. A close-up photograph of a Higsons Pale Ale cask ale beer clip mounted on a traditional handpull inside a Liverpool pub, England. The blue circular badge displays the Higsons branding, including the founding date of 1780 and the wording Liverpool's Original Beer, reinforcing the brand's deep association with the city's brewing history.
Higsons was one of Liverpool's most prominent historic breweries, operating for over two centuries from its main site on Stanhope Street before closing in the late twentieth century. The brewery played a significant role in Liverpool's pub culture, supplying beers to tied houses across the city and wider Merseyside.
Beer clips such as this are a defining feature of British cask ale service, used to identify the beer being served from hand-pulled pumps on pub bars. Their continued presence reflects the enduring popularity of traditional real ale and the influence of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) in preserving British beer heritage.
This image is suitable for editorial use illustrating British pub culture, real ale traditions, historic breweries, Liverpool's brewing heritage, cask ale service, alcohol branding, and the cultural significance of traditional pubs in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T19PFG - Yates is an English pub chain. It was founded as Yates's Wine Lodge in Oldham, Lancashire by Peter and Simon Yates in 1884
Yates is Britain's oldest pub chain. Its motto was moderation is true temperance. The founders, brothers Peter and Simon Yates, were from Preston. Peter (who lived from April 22, 1854?1944) was sent to Spain to learn about wine. Simon went to the US to learn about business methods.
The first Yates Wine Lodge opened in Oldham in 1884
On July 23, 1994, Yates became a public company owned by the Yates Group PLC (Yates Brothers Wine Lodges PLC). The Yates Group also owned Ha! Ha! Bar & Canteen and operated pubs under the Blob Shop and Addison's name. In the late 1990s, its share price rose to reach a high of 550p in 1998.
In June 2001, the Yates Group entered takeover talks with Luminar Group. In July 2001, it withdrew from takeover talks and saying it would instead sell off 25 of its pubs, later putting 18 of them up for sale. On November 1, 2001, the Yates Group sold eight pubs to Morrells for ?4 million, with four being in Grantham, Slough, Solihull and Tunbridge Wells.
In October 2003, Yates sold its Aussie White fortified brand to Halewood International for ?1 million

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG8YA4 - A rather artificial attempt at the recreation of a lively coffee house scene was made by the temperance movement in the 1880's. Modelled after the spacious, light, mahogany-trimmed taverns being promoted by the beer industry, the late Victorian coffee house was a conscious attempt by naive social workers to lure the working men from their pubs and the perils of demon drink. Coffee taverns, one pamphlet stated, must show there are beverages as comforting as beer, that there are beverages to be bought as cheap as beer. And they must provide advantages not provided by such a formidable enemy and by this manoeuvre make victory certain. Accordingly, working-men were encouraged to bring their own food to be cooked free of charge in the tavern's kitchen. Newspapers and games were laid out - also gratis - and customers were encouraged to remain as long as they wanted. Needless to say, none of these coffee taverns survived long on their own.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RECE3K - Newcastle Brown Ale is a brown ale, originally brewed in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Launched in 1927 by Colonel Jim Porter after three years of development, the 1960 merger of Newcastle Breweries with Scottish Brewers afforded the beer national distribution and sales peaked in the United Kingdom in the early 1970s. The beer underwent a resurgence in the late 1980s and early 1990s with student unions selling it. By the late 1990s, the beer was the most widely distributed alcoholic product in the UK. By the 2000s, the majority of sales were in the United States, although it still sells 100 million bottles annually in the UK. Brewing moved in 2005 from Newcastle to Dunston, Tyne and Wear, and in 2010 to Tadcaster. In 2017, the Heineken Brewery in Zoeterwoude, the Netherlands, also began production. As of 2019, it is brewed as well by Lagunitas Brewing Company in Petaluma, California, and Chicago, Illinois, for the American market.
Newcastle Brown Ale is perceived in the UK as a working-man's beer, with a long association with heavy industry, the traditional economic staple of the North East of England. In export markets, it is seen as a trendy, premium import and is predominantly drunk by the young. It was one of the first beers to be distributed in a clear glass bottle and is most readily associated with this form of dispense in the UK.
The blue star logo was introduced to the Newcastle Brown Ale bottle in 1928, the year after the beer was launched. The five points of the star represent the five founding breweries of Newcastle.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5RC - This photograph shows spectators queuing at an entrance to Silverstone Circuit during the Formula One British Grand Prix, waiting to pass through security screening on a clear and sunny morning. Long lines of fans are guided by temporary metal barriers towards controlled access points, reflecting the scale and organisation required to manage one of the UK's largest annual sporting events.
Security checks at major Formula One events typically include bag inspections and restrictions on items such as alcohol containers and prohibited objects, forming part of wider crowd safety and risk management arrangements. The visible queuing system and open terrain underline the logistical challenges of processing large volumes of people efficiently while maintaining public safety and a positive visitor experience.
The image captures the anticipation and atmosphere of race day, with spectators dressed for warm weather and moving steadily towards the circuit interior. Parked vehicles, fencing, and temporary infrastructure in the background illustrate the extensive operational footprint that surrounds a modern international motorsport event.
Well suited for editorial use, this photograph documents crowd behaviour, event security, and spectator management at a major UK sporting venue, highlighting the behind-the-scenes realities that support safe access to large-scale Formula One events.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP34D - A closed and shuttered shopfront of the former Waterside Off Licence in Coleraine, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The traditional painted sign reading Waterside Off Licence remains clearly visible above the frontage, while the wooden shutters and door below are firmly shut, indicating the premises is no longer trading.
The building features a weathered red-painted exterior typical of small independent retail units found in towns across Northern Ireland and the wider United Kingdom. Signs of age, wear, and exposure to the elements are visible across the frontage, reinforcing the sense of a long-established local business that has ceased operation.
Photographed in natural daylight, the image provides a documentary record of changing high street and neighbourhood retail landscapes, reflecting wider economic pressures on small independent shops. It captures a familiar streetscene in Coleraine, illustrating themes of retail decline, local commerce, and the transformation of everyday urban environments in Northern Irish towns.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RGHXBD - Right at the foot of Waterloo Street stands Michael Tracy's Bar, formerly known as The Electric Bar.
Dating back to 1874, it took its more Promethean title from the first electricity-operating generating station which was set across the street in the Diamond.
Later it became the property of Michael Tracy and his more prosaic letters replaced the dramatic Electric legend.
This pub has always been the favourite of Merchant Navy men and it is mentioned in the famous best-selling novel The Cruel Sea by Nicholas Montserrat, which was made into a very successful film starring Jack Hawkins, because during the Second World War, it was a popular haunt for seamen of all nationalities.
There are a number of interesting large framed photos of old Derry around the walls of the bar, and an unusual attraction in this friendly city is that the publican is a woman and an attractive one at that!

A freshly poured pint of golden ale sits on the polished wooden bar, with the distinctive pump clips arranged behind it, representing a mix of independent and historic London breweries.
The scene captures the traditional presentation of cask-conditioned beer in an English pub, with hand-pulled pumps, branded clips, and a well-stocked back bar visible in the background. These beers reflect the diversity of London's brewing scene, combining long-established names such as Young's with newer independent breweries that have contributed to the city's modern craft-beer revival.
Photographed indoors under warm ambient lighting, the image documents everyday pub culture in England, illustrating themes of social life, hospitality, and British brewing heritage. It is suitable for use in editorial coverage relating to pubs, beer, London food and drink culture, and the contemporary UK brewing industry. Five Points Pale ? Five Points Brewing Company

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3JRC4 - This image shows a clear drinking glass placed on a pub bar counter, repurposed as a tip jar with a handwritten label reading Tips for my new boobs. The deliberately cheeky message uses humour and provocation to encourage customers to leave gratuities, reflecting the informal and often playful culture found in many bars and pubs.
Behind the glass, shelves stocked with spirits and bottles create a familiar hospitality backdrop, while the worn wooden bar surface suggests a well-used, lived-in drinking space. The message is written in marker pen on paper inside the glass, emphasising its improvised, personal nature rather than corporate branding.
The image speaks to wider themes around tipping culture, service industry pay, workplace humour, and body-positive or self-deprecating jokes commonly used by bar staff to engage customers. It also reflects contemporary attitudes to openness, banter, and informal fundraising within hospitality settings.
Photographed indoors under low bar lighting, the image is suitable for editorial use covering nightlife, pubs, hospitality work, tipping culture, humour in the workplace, and social interaction in bars.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RMMPBT - Sch??fferhofer brew wheat beer that is known for its refreshing and fruity taste. The history of Sch??fferhofer dates back to 1806, when the brewery was founded by Georg Sch??ffler in Mainz, Germany. The brewery was later acquired by Binding-Brauerei AG in 1921, and then by Radeberger Gruppe in 2001.
Sch??fferhofer is a brand of German wheat beer named for the former house of Peter Sch??ffer (the house was called the Mainzer Sch??fferhof) in which a brewery was founded. This brand of beer sports a portrait of Peter Sch??ffer as its trademark. The Sch??fferhofer brand originates from this brewery in Mainz, which is also known as the Brauerei Dreik??nigshof.
According to the New York Times, in her 2014 novel Gutenberg's Apprentice, Alix Christie addresses the issues of intellectual property theft relating to Sch??ffer and Gutenberg in the invention of printing

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJ29RD - Bacharach (pronunciation (help?info), also known as Bacharach am Rhein) is a town in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde of Rhein-Nahe, whose seat is in Bingen am Rhein, although that town is not within its bounds.
The original name Baccaracus suggests a Celtic origin. Above the town stands Stahleck Castle (Burg Stahleck), now a youth hostel.
Geography
Location
The town lies in the Rhine Gorge, 48 km south of Koblenz.
Constituent communities
Bacharach is divided into several Ortsteile. The outlying centre of Steeg lies in the Steeg Valley (Steeger Tal) off to the side, away from the Rhine. This glen lies between Medenscheid and Neurath to the south and Henschhausen to the north on the heights.
History
In the early 11th century, Bacharach had its first documentary mention. It may have been that as early as the 7th century, the kingly domain passed into Archbishop of Cologne Kunibert's ownership
pointing to this is a Kunibertskapelle (chapel) on the spot where now stands the Wernerkapelle. The V??gte of the Cologne estate were the Elector of the Palatinate, who over time pushed back Cologne's influence.
Caring for and maintaining Bacharach's building monuments, spurred on in the early 20th century by the Rhenish Association for Monument Care and Landscape Preservation (Rheinischer Verein f?r Denkmalpflege und Landschaftsschutz) which took on the then highly endangered town wall and Stahleck Castle ruin jobs, and the great dedication of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate to the Wernerkapelle have seen to it that Bacharach is still a jewel of the Rheinromantik and a multifaceted documentary site of mediaeval architecture on the Middle Rhine. The Wernerkapelle ruin is under monumental protection and before it a plaque has been placed recalling the inhuman crimes against Jewish residents and also containing a quotation from a prayer by Pope John XXIII for a change in Christians' thinking in their relationship

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R15NEA - Retsina (Greek: ?????????) is a Greek white (or ros??) resinated wine, which has been made for at least 2,000 years. Its unique flavor is said to have originated from the practice of sealing wine vessels, particularly amphorae, with Aleppo pine resin in ancient times. Before the invention of impermeable glass bottles, oxygen caused many wines to spoil within the year. Pine resin helped keep air out, while infusing the wine with resin aroma. The Romans began to use barrels in the 3rd century AD, removing any oenological necessity for resin, but the flavor itself was so popular that the style is still widespread today.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M69C9G - Simple tips for cutting down
Make a plan
Before you start drinking, set a limit on how much you're going to drink.
Set a budget
Only take a fixed amount of money to spend on alcohol.
Let them know
If you let your friends and family know you're cutting down and it's important to you, you could get support from them.
Take it a day at a time
Cut back a little each day. That way, every day you do is a success.
Make it a smaller one
You can still enjoy a drink, but go for smaller sizes. Try bottled beer instead of pints, or a small glass of wine instead of a large one.
Have a lower-strength drink
Cut down the alcohol by swapping strong beers or wines for ones with a lower strength (ABV in %). You'll find this information on the bottle.
Stay hydrated
Have a glass of water before you have alcohol and alternate alcoholic drinks with water or other non-alcoholic drinks.
Take a break
Have several drink-free days each week.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M69C9X - Liquor (or a spirit) is an alcoholic drink produced by distillation of grains, fruits, vegetables, or sugar, that have already gone through alcoholic fermentation. Other terms for liquor include: spirit drink, distilled beverage, spirituous liquor or hard liquor. The distillation process concentrates the liquid to increase its alcohol by volume. As liquors contain significantly more alcohol (ethanol) than other alcoholic drinks, they are considered 'harder'
in North America, the term hard liquor is sometimes used to distinguish distilled alcoholic drinks from non-distilled ones, whereas the term spirits is more common in the UK. Some examples of liquors include vodka, rum, gin, and tequila. Liquors are often aged in barrels, such as for the production of brandy and whiskey, or are infused with flavorings to form a flavored liquor such as absinthe.
While the word liquor ordinarily refers to distilled alcoholic spirits rather than beverages produced by fermentation alone, it can sometimes be used more broadly to refer to any alcoholic beverage (or even non-alcoholic products of distillation or various other liquids).
Like other alcoholic drinks, liquor is typically consumed for the psychoactive effects of alcohol. Liquor may be consumed on its own ('neat'), typically in amounts of around 50 millilitres (1.7 US fluid ounces) per served drink. In an undiluted form, distilled beverages are often slightly sweet, and bitter, and typically impart a burning mouthfeel, with an odor derived from the alcohol and the production and aging processes
the exact flavor varies between different varieties of liquor and the different impurities they impart. Liquor is also frequently mixed with other ingredients to form a cocktail.
Rapid consumption of a large amount of liquor can cause severe alcohol intoxication or alcohol poisoning, which can be fatal. Consistent consumption of liquor over time correlates with higher mortality and other harmful health effects

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPDJAT - Bulmers cider is one of a number of brands owned by British cider maker H. P. Bulmer of Hereford. It is one of the biggest selling British bottled cider brands in the UK because it has the highest concentration of apples, with a number of variants including Bulmers Original & Pear. It should not be confused with Bulmers Irish Cider, sold outside the Republic of Ireland as Magners.
History
Fred and Percy Bulmer grew the apples at their family orchard at Credenhill in Herefordshire which would be later used to make the cider for which they became known. Production was initially at Ryelands Street in Hereford, the original buildings, including cider cellars survives today as the Cider Museum and King Offa Distillery. Production moved to the current Plough Lane site in the late 1970s. Today HP Bulmer makes 65% of the UK's five hundred million litres of cider sold annually, and the bulk of the UK's cider exports. From 1937 to 1949, Bulmers operated with Wm. Magners of Clonmel, expanding into Irish distribution markets. From 1949 Magners withdrew from this partnership but retained rights to trade under the name HP Bulmer Ltd in Ireland.
In 2003, the Hereford-based firm was bought for ?278 million by Scottish & Newcastle (S&N) with the loss of some 200 jobs initially. In 2008, S&N were bought for ?7.8 billion by the Carlsberg and Heineken groups. Bulmers now only survives as a brand name and subsidiary of the Dutch Heineken group, with operations in Hereford scaled back to focus mainly on the production of cider.
During spring 2006, the company relaunched Bulmers Original in the UK, aimed at the served over ice market, which had grown in popularity over the past few years. Bulmers Original is a 4.5% ABV cider, primarily sold in pint bottles (568 ml). In November 2007, Bulmers pear cider was launched

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPF7HP - Venton's Devon Cyder History
Real Cyder has been made in the traditional way from our East Devon orchards at Clyst St Lawrence for at least the past 100 years that we know of. Looking at old maps of the local area it's probably much longer than that and the documented history of Devon Cyder extends to more like 300 - 400 years.
Whiteways Orchard Heritage
The famous Whiteways Devon Cyder Company were based 2 miles from us and for nearly a century, the orchards surrounding us were nurtured and used to make their Devon Cyder. Famously Whiteways exported thousands of gallons of Cyder to America during the post-prohibition era. In it's heyday the orchards at Whimple were known to be the most extensive in the world. Whiteway's closed in 1985 due to the decline in popularity and the factory land was sold of for housing. The orchards, including our own became redundant for many years but have now, thankfully found a new lease of life due to the renewed interest in Real Cyder.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPH6R4 - Gwatkins Cidery and cider maker Denis Gwatkin from Herefordshire UK. Cider has a lengthy history in the UK dating back to around the 12th Century and possibly even earlier. In terms of Gwatkin Cidery's history, Denis says our orchards are first marked on our 1830 map, so cider making has a long tradition on our farm, which started out as a grange for the nearby abbey in 1147.
Gwatkin Cidery is a uniquely family-owned and operated farm, business, and home. We are one of the largest if not the largest traditional cider makers in Britain. By traditional we mean that we only allow natural fermentation to occur, we don't use sulphites to kill off the natural yeast and substitute them with a wine yeast, says Denis. They make and sell about 35 ciders and perrys (fermented pear) including seasonal rotations and a few local beer selections.
All of the cider produced at Gwatkin is packaged and sold in bottles as most traditional-style cideries do. While there is no inherent difference to taste of ciders sold in cans versus bottles, caning and caning lines are a rather modern technology. A few of the ciders Gwatkin Cidery makes include Kingstone Black, Golden Valley Scrumpy, award winning Yarlington Mill Cider, and Stoke Red Cider.
For Denis, his favorite thing about cider making is tasting the end product after months of slow fermentation in our wooden barrels. He emphasized that cider is naturally fermented by wild yeasts, a taste of the past before Louis Pasteur started advising other cider makers in the late nineteenth century.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M107P1 - Built in 1546 for the servants of the Bishops of Ely, The Ye Olde Mitre is famous for having a cherry tree, (now supporting the front) that Queen Elizabeth once danced around with Sir Christopher Hatton. The pub was actually a part of Cambridge (Ely being in Cambridge) and the licencees used to have to go there for their licence. Set in a part of London steeped in history, it's near where William Wallace was hung, drawn and quartered at Smithfield, along with martyrs and traitors who were also killed nearby.
Voted by the society SPBW, London pub of the year 2013 and 2019,
Included in Camra's National inventory of Historic Heritage

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M108AJ - The Viaduct Tavern is a Grade II listed public house at 126 Newgate Street, Holborn, London. It was built in 1865 and the interior was remodeled in 1898?1900 by Arthur Dixon. It is on the Campaign for Real Ale's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors.
The tavern is also known for reportedly being haunted, and has been the subject of several investigation shows, including BuzzFeed Unsolved
The pub has a large curved frontage, but the interior is surprisingly small. Many of the original features have survived. On one wall, three paintings of wistful maidens represent agriculture, banking and the arts. The ?arts' was attacked (some say shot, others bayoneted) by a drunken First World War soldier, and she still bears the scar.
There are gilded and silvered mirrors and decorated glass. At the back of the bar is a manager's stall, a sort of office booth, made from beautifully carved hardwood and intricately engraved glass panels. The ornate ceiling is made from beaten copper and is supported by cast iron pillars.
The Viaduct Tavern and the Old Bailey opposite, were NOT built on the site of Newgate Prison, which continued until 1868. The cellars of the Viaduct are therefore NOT the former cells of the prison and despite the tours of them that can be arranged by appointment (they're authentically skanky) they're not cells. Still evocative and stinkily Victorian, though.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNTC - This image shows a row of traditional cask ale hand pumps from Joseph Holt, one of Manchester's best-known historic breweries, displayed on a pub bar in Manchester city centre. The pump clips include well-established Holt beers such as Holt Mild, Holt Bitter, and Two Hoots, reflecting the brewery's long association with north-west England pub culture.
Founded in 1849, Joseph Holt Brewery remains an important part of Manchester's brewing heritage, with its beers commonly found in tied and free houses across the region. The wooden pump handles, branded badges, and polished bar setting evoke the classic British public house interior, closely associated with cask-conditioned real ale and CAMRA-style drinking traditions.
The image is suitable for editorial and commercial use illustrating British pubs, real ale culture, brewing heritage, hospitality interiors, and Manchester social life, and would work well in features on UK beer, traditional pubs, or regional identity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2CB00AE - Yorkshire Cheapest Pint To Rise By A Quid Now Lockdown Is Over
We've all enjoyed the pubs reopening this month. Whether you went out, or you stayed at home and decided to see what happens, it's nice to see a little bit of normality getting back into society ? although, it does seem like this is the calm before the storm.
The biggest question now? Whether our beloved locals can survive through this turbulent time, which is expected to see people spending much less now that jobs are being axed and workers continue to live off the furlough scheme.
One brewery that has felt the pull is Yorkshire's oldest, Sam Smith. Founded in 1758, Sam Smith's pubs are the most traditional pubs you'll find in England. They like to stick to traditions such as no phone, swearing and a big push on a social and fun time that pubs have always been focused on.
One of their biggest pushes, and one that Yorkshire folk have always enjoyed, is the fact that they've managed to keep the price of a pint as one of the cheapest in the country ? without skimping on quality.
But even they've struggled post-lockdown, and have announced that they'll be hiking up the prices of some of their favourite beers by as much as ?1. Taddy Lager will rise from ?2.30 to ?3.40 and their Soveriegn Bitter price will go from ?2.04 to ?3.04. You can hear the Yorkshireman's cry already ?Hooow muuchh?'.
Reports from The Sun show a Sam Smith's landlord saying: It's a heck of a price hike ? I don't know how I'm going to explain it to the customers. It's not going to make reopening after the lockdown any easier. The report also shows that Sam Smith pubs won't be the only ones implementing price changes, with Wetherspoons pubs set to be making the change too.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ABJGFB - A taverna is a small Greek restaurant that serves Greek cuisine. The taverna is an integral part of Greek culture and has become familiar to people from other countries who visit Greece, as well as through the establishment of tavernes (???????????, plural) in countries such as the United States and Australia by expatriate Greeks.
The earliest evidence of a Greek restaurant, or taverna, was discovered at the Ancient Agora of Athens (or Athenian Agora) during archaeological excavations conducted by the American School of Classical Studies in the early 1970s. Large quantities of classical Greek cooking and eating utensils were found at the taverna such as plates, mixing bowls, lidded casseroles, spits for broiling meat, mortars for chopping and grinding, as well as a cooking bell and a variety of jugs. Furthermore, large amounts of fish bones and shellfish remains were discovered revealing the menu specialties of the classical Greek taverna such as oysters, mussels, murex shells, and large fish. A nearby wine shop in the Athenian Agora, possibly in association with the taverna, served local Attic wine, as well as a wide variety of wines imported from Chios, Mende, Corinth, Samos and Lesbos.[1] In the 10th century AD, taverns in the Byzantine Empire that served pure wine were subject to a curfew in order to prevent alcohol-induced violence and rioting, as documented in the Book of the Eparch 19

Alcohol abuse was a psychiatric diagnosis in the DSM-IV, and has been merged with alcohol dependence into alcohol use disorder in the DSM-5
Globally, alcohol consumption is the seventh leading risk factor for both death and the burden of disease and injury. In short, except for tobacco, alcohol accounts for a higher burden of disease than any other drug. Alcohol use is a major cause of preventable liver disease worldwide, and alcoholic liver disease is the main alcohol-related chronic medical illness. Millions of men and women of all ages, from adolescents to the elderly, engage in unhealthy drinking in the United States. Alcohol use disorder (AUD) reportedly most often affects young men (aged 18?24 years) of lower socioeconomic status.

Joe & The Juice was founded in 2002 by Kaspar Basse, at the time in his late 20s. The company is based in Copenhagen, Denmark. It sells coffee, tea, sandwiches, fresh juices, smoothies, and veggie shots made with organic ingredients.
In 2013, Valedo Partners bought the company for $48 million, though Basse retained a 10 percent stake. General Atlantic invested in October, 2016, to help fund expansion into the United States.
Although Joe & The Juice competes with both coffee shops like Starbucks and stores like Jamba Juice, Basse has tried to develop a different atmosphere at the restaurants, opting instead for what has been described as an edgier vibe. Managers are generally given autonomy over their stores. In Denmark in 2017, the company was accused of discriminating against a female applicant.
In addition to locations throughout Scandinavia, Joe & The Juice has locations in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Minneapolis-St Paul International AirportWashington, D.C., New York City, Reykjavik, London, Birmingham, Nice, Lucerne, Zurich, Amsterdam, Amstelveen, Hamburg, Hong Kong, Seattle, Singapore, Seoul, Sydney, Liverpool, Burlingame, Redwood City, Corte Madera, Palo Alto and Antwerp

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PEHFP3 - Tanqueray is a brand of gin produced by Diageo plc and marketed worldwide. Although originated in London, it is now produced in Scotland. It does not command a sizeable market share in its native market, but its largest market is in the United States, where it is the highest selling gin import, followed by southern Europe.[1]
Tanqueray is a London dry gin
it is so called because of its distillation process, as well as originating in Bloomsbury, London. London dry gin is made by means of double distillation of grain. Botanicals are added during the second distillation. While the recipe is a closely guarded trade secret, it is known to contain four botanicals: juniper, coriander, angelica root, and liquorice.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P4HWP0 - Niagara-on-the-Lake is a town in Ontario, Canada. It is located on the Niagara Peninsula at the point where the Niagara River meets Lake Ontario, across the river from New York, United States. Niagara-on-the-Lake is in the Niagara Region of Ontario and is the only town in Canada that has a lord mayor. It has a population of 17,511 (2016).
Niagara-on-the-Lake is important in the history of Canada: it served as the first capital of the province of Upper Canada, the predecessor of Ontario, and was called Newark from 1792 to 1797. During the War of 1812, the town, the two former villages of St. David's and Queenston, and Fort George were the sites of numerous battles following the American invasion of Upper Canada, and the town was razed. Niagara-on-the-Lake is home to the oldest Catholic church and the second-oldest Anglican church in Ontario and the oldest surviving golf course in North America.
Today, Niagara-on-the-Lake draws tourists with its colonial-style buildings, the Shaw Festival, Fort George, wineries, an outlet mall on the highway, and its proximity to Niagara Falls. The Niagara Region has the second-highest percentage of seniors in Ontario

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P110KN - Drinking alcohol alone is an activity that can herald the presence of a dependence and increasing tolerance to the drink. Some people enjoy the freedom associated with going out by themselves and socializing over a drink or two. Others enjoy drinking at home by themselves and find that alcohol helps them to relax and sleep. These kinds of behaviors can indicate that a person is self-medicating problems or issues that they do not want to face. They may be having problems with family members, friends or at work, and need alcohol to help them forget what is going on. A person could also suffer from a mental illness or social anxiety and need alcohol to help them to socialize without realizing that they are becoming dependent.
A person may also begin to drink by themselves because they do not want people to question the amount or frequency of alcohol that they are drinking. A person who hides their drinking from others should be questioning why they are doing it ? are they ashamed or feeling guilty of their drinking? Do friends and family tell them that they drink too much? Why do they want to be drunk alone? A person who drinks alone is putting themselves at risk of developing a substance abuse problem and of increasing the problems they are facing. They are isolating themselves from others, magnifying problems with friends and family and denying that they have a problem.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HE7MF1 - Buckfast Tonic Wine, commonly known as Buckfast or Buckie, is a fortified wine with caffeine, licensed from Buckfast Abbey in Devon and distributed by J. Chandler & Company in the United Kingdom and Grants of Ireland in Ireland.
The drink has become a subject of controversy in Scotland due to its links with ned culture
a senior politician labelled it as a badge of pride amongst those who are involved in antisocial behaviour.
Buckfast is very popular in Scotland, the sales of the product were monitored in 2014 by the Scottish government to see if the Buckfast Triangle still stood. The test showed that the towns and cities where Buckfast was sold highest per capita were, in order, Glasgow and the surrounding areas, East Kilbride, Hamilton, Cambuslang, and Coatbridge, all of which are in the northern areas of Lanarkshire, excepting Glasgow.
Several Scottish politicians and social activists have singled out Buckfast Tonic Wine as being particularly responsible for crime, disorder, and general social deprivation in these communities. Although Buckfast accounts for only 0.5% of alcohol sales in Scotland, the figure is markedly higher in Lanarkshire. Helen Liddell, former Secretary of State for Scotland, called for the wine to be banned. In 2005, Scottish Justice Minister Cathy Jamieson suggested that retailers should stop selling the wine. On a subsequent visit to Auchinleck within her constituency, she was greeted by teenagers chanting, Don't ban Buckie. Jamieson then received correspondence from lawyers acting for Buckfast distributors, J. Chandler & Company, in Andover. A further consequence was that Buckfast sales increased substantially in the months following Jamieson's comments

The purpose is to protect the surface of a table or any other surface where the user might place their beverage.
Public houses usually will have beermats spread out across the tables. They are used not just to protect the surface of the table, but, as they are usually made of paper, they can also be used to absorb condensation dripping along the glass or serve as an ad-hoc notepad. Beermats are often branded with trademarks or alcohol advertising. Beermats are not to be confused with bar mats, rectangular pieces of rubber or absorbent material used to protect the counter top and soak up spilled drinks in a bar or pub.

The tipple has been given the rebranding following a competition, which attracted over 450 entries.
The winning entry was from Phil Booth, landlord of the Boltmakers Arms in East Parade, Keighley. He has received ?1,000 ? which he is donating to Manorlands ? and 36 gallons of the newly-named beer.
This is just fantastic ? when I entered I never expected to win, said Phil. What could be better for business than having a beer called Boltmaker on my bar! It will help to spread the name far and wide.
Timothy Taylor sales director Grant Simpson said: Exactly 60 years ago we ran a similar competition to name a beer ? it became Landlord and has grown into an iconic brand.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HD49 - Minimum alcohol pricing in Scotland.
Five European wine-producing nations are trying to block Scotland's plans for minimum alcohol pricing.
France, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Bulgaria have said the policy is illegal, unfair and ineffective and could have a devastating impact on the wine and spirits industry.
They argue that it breaches European free trade law by discriminating against imported alcohol products.
The Scottish government insisted minimum pricing was perfectly legal.
The European Commission (EC) is currently considering the Scottish government's request to be granted an exemption from trade regulations to enact the minimum price law which was approved by the Scottish Parliament last year.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HE7M9E - Guinness is an Irish dry stout produced by Diageo that originated in the brewery of Arthur Guinness (1725?1803) at St. James's Gate, Dublin. Guinness is one of the most successful beer brands worldwide. It is brewed in almost 50 countries and is available in over 120. Annual sales total 850 million litres (1.5 billion Imperial or 1.8 billion US pints).
A feature of the product is the burnt flavour that is derived from roasted unmalted barley, although this is a relatively modern development, not becoming part of the grist until the mid-20th century. For many years a portion of aged brew was blended with freshly brewed beer to give a sharp lactic flavour. Although the Guinness palate still features a characteristic tang, the company has refused to confirm whether this type of blending still occurs. The draught beer's thick, creamy head comes from mixing the beer with nitrogen and carbon dioxide when poured. It is popular with the Irish both in Ireland and abroad, and, in spite of a decline in consumption since 2001, is still the best-selling alcoholic drink in Ireland where Guinness & Co. makes almost ?2 billion annually.
The company moved its headquarters to London at the beginning of the Anglo-Irish Trade War in 1932. In 1997, it merged with Grand Metropolitan to form the multinational alcoholic drinks producer Diageo.

(I am not an alcoholic, I am not a junkie, I am down on my luck, homeless and broke, please help, Thank you &

¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
Black Mountain is a Canadian psychedelic rock-band composed of Stephen McBean, Amber Webber, Matt Camirand, Jeremy Schmidt and Joshua Wells. They have recently really grown on me, particularly this, one of the gentler tracks on the latest album Wilderness Heart.
By day, three members of the band work for Insite, an organization that meets the basic living requirements of the chronically poor, drug addicted and mentally ill in a part of Vancouver.
A BBC review described it thus: 'Black Mountain's third album represents the finest yield so far from the Vancouver band’s relentless harvesting of rock and folk's 70s heyday. Wilderness Heart refuses to dive into unfamiliar territory, instead expertly blending heavy rock, smoky blues and finger-picked acoustic guitars across an album of tantalisingly layered songs. Rather than adhering to type, Black Mountain now have a catalogue of songs that respect and rival their influences.'
I can only agree, having played the album to death now for about 7 weeks. Check it out, tell 'em I sent you :-)
------------------------
Princess St in the city of Edinburgh can be a magnet for the homeless to pick up a few coins and the odd discarded half eaten sandwich, can of Tenants Super or BK whopper. Jenners is one of the top pitches. Its now owned by house of Fraser. Known as the 'Harrods of the North', it has held a Royal Warrant since 1911, and was visited by Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of its 150th anniversary in 1988. In recent years (2004) it changed its vision statement from its goal to 'be the most exciting department store outside of London' to 'Confidently Independent'.
Its probably no coincidence that this chap has choosen the 'Home, thats our department' window to bed down with his canine companion.
Up at the student run Bedlam Theatre there is a bench that is dedicated to the memory of a student who died a few years ago. The concrete bench is raised about two feet on a wall on the front of the theatre. From there you get a beautiful view all the way up North Bridge, the New College dome in the distance.
Tramps know it as 'the bench'. A central point to meet, watch the world go by, share tips and drinks, but not sheltered to sleep at night. As the colder weather draws in and other budget cuts bite its a harder time than ever in town. Although big cities attract the homeless, facilities are thin on the ground. Increasingly the 'Big Society' is being mentioned to replace trimmed initiatives and increasingly volunteers. This city can afford to waste over £600 million on trams solving a problem that did not exist, but little on supporting some of the vulnerable.

It fascinated me and products of the 'Barnsley Beer Company' not being that familiar over here in the 'red rose' portion of the pennines, I thought I would give it a chance.
A very nice dark fruity, cake spiced, gingery on the burp porter style beer, well worth a try. It had flavours not unlike a Scottish clootie dumpling, if you have ever encountered one of those.
I was a frequent traveller to Barnsley when I lived over near Glossop, Derbyshire. Good to see local ale coming out of there once again.
I will comment tomorrow if any aphrodisiac qualities appear evident. Veritable snake oil :-)

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF2205 - A trolley of birthday cakes in a UK Tesco store.
A supermarket, a form of grocery store, is a self-service store offering a wide variety of food and household merchandise, organized into departments. It is larger in size and has a wider selection than a traditional grocery store, also selling items typically found in a convenience store, but is smaller and more limited in the range of merchandise than a hypermarket or big-box store.
The supermarket typically comprises meat, fresh produce, dairy, and baked goods departments, along with shelf space reserved for canned and packaged goods as well as for various non-food items such as household cleaners, pharmacy products and pet supplies. Most supermarkets also sell a variety of other household products that are consumed regularly, such as alcohol (where permitted), medicine, and clothes, and some stores sell a much wider range of non-food products.
The traditional suburban supermarket occupies a large amount of floor space, usually on a single level. It is usually situated near a residential area in order to be convenient to consumers. Its basic appeal is the availability of a broad selection of goods under a single roof, at relatively low prices. Other advantages include ease of parking and frequently the convenience of shopping hours that extend far into the evening or even 24 hours a day. Supermarkets usually allocate large budgets to advertising, typically through newspapers. They also present elaborate in-store displays of products. The stores are usually part of corporate chains that own or control (sometimes by franchise) other supermarkets located nearby?even transnationally?thus increasing opportunities for economies of scale.
Supermarkets typically are supplied by the distribution centres of their parent companies, usually in the largest city in the province.

Burton upon Trent, also known as Burton-on-Trent or simply Burton, is a large town straddling the River Trent in the east of Staffordshire, England. Its associated adjective is 'Burtonian'.
Burton is best known for its brewing heritage, home to over a dozen breweries in its heyday. It originally grew up around Burton-on-Trent Abbey, the monastery of St. Modwen, and had grown into a busy market town by the early modern period. While Burton's great bridge over the Trent was in poor repair by the early 16th century it served as 'a comen passage to and fro many countries to the grett releff and comfort of travellyng people', according to the abbot. The town, which had an estimated population of 64,449 (2001 Census), lies within the National Forest.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3BKDJGT - A traditional illuminated Guinness pub sign hanging from the exterior of an Irish pub in Dublin city centre, Ireland, photographed at dusk. The sign features the instantly recognisable Guinness branding, including a stylised pint of stout with a creamy head, set against a red background.
Guinness is one of Ireland's most iconic global brands and has been closely associated with Dublin since the eighteenth century. Hanging pub signs such as this are a familiar feature of the city's streetscape, particularly in historic areas where traditional pubs continue to play a central role in social and cultural life.
The warm glow of the illuminated sign contrasts with the surrounding brick and stone architecture and the fading evening light, evoking the atmosphere of Dublin's nightlife and hospitality scene. Street lamps and neighbouring buildings help frame the image within a lived-in urban environment.
This photograph is suitable for editorial use illustrating Irish pub culture, Dublin nightlife, iconic beer branding, tourism in Ireland, traditional hospitality, and urban street scenes in European capital cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RMJ3BE - A cocktail is an alcoholic mixed drink, which is either a combination of spirits, or one or more spirits mixed with other ingredients such as fruit juice, lemonade, flavored syrup, or cream. There are various types of cocktails, based on the number and kind of ingredients added. The origins of the cocktail are debated.
The Oxford Dictionaries define cocktail as An alcoholic drink consisting of a spirit or spirits mixed with other ingredients, such as fruit juice or cream. A cocktail can contain alcohol, a sugar, and a bitter/citrus. When a mixed drink contains only a distilled spirit and a mixer, such as soda or fruit juice, it is a highball. Many of the International Bartenders Association Official Cocktails are highballs. When a mixed drink contains only a distilled spirit and a liqueur, it is a duo, and when it adds a mixer, it is a trio. Additional ingredients may be sugar, honey, milk, cream, and various herbs.
Mixed drinks without alcohol that resemble cocktails are known as mocktails or virgin cocktails.
Traditionally cocktails were a mixture of spirits, sugar, water, and bitters. The term highball appears during the 1890s to distinguish a drink composed only of a distilled spirit and a mixer. During Prohibition in the United States (1919?1933), when alcoholic beverages were illegal, cocktails were still consumed illegally in establishments known as speakeasies.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P110KP - Drinking alcohol alone is an activity that can herald the presence of a dependence and increasing tolerance to the drink.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEHRHC - The Crown Liquor Saloon, also known as the Crown Bar, is a pub in Great Victoria Street in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Refurbished in 1885, and at least twice since, it is an outstanding example of a Victorian gin palace, and one of Northern Ireland's best-known pubs. It is owned by the National Trust and is leased to Mitchells & Butlers who run it as a Nicholson's pub
Opened by Felix O'Hanlon as The Railway Tavern, the pub was then bought by Michael Flanagan. Flanagan's son Patrick renamed and renovated it in 1885.
The Crown owes its elaborate tiling, stained glass and woodwork to the Italian craftsmen whom Flanagan persuaded to work on the pub after hours. These craftsmen were brought to Ireland to work on the many new churches being built in Belfast at the time
Guinness is an Irish dry stout that originated in the brewery of Arthur Guinness at St. James's Gate, Dublin, Ireland, in 1759. It is one of the most successful alcohol brands worldwide, brewed in almost 50 countries, and available in over 120. Sales in 2011 amounted to 850,000,000 litres (190,000,000 imp gal
220,000,000 U.S. gal). In spite of declining consumption since 2001, it is the best-selling alcoholic drink in Ireland where Guinness & Co. Brewery makes almost ?2 billion worth of beer annually.
